The mining industry faces numerous challenges related to sustainability and circular economy principles, necessitating strategic approaches to innovation and resource management. As demands for mineral resources continue to rise, mining companies are under increasing pressure to address environmental impacts, minimise waste generation, and optimise resource utilisation. These challenges underscore the importance of Research and Development (R&D) roadmaps as strategic tools for guiding innovation and sustainability efforts within the sector (Jochen Berbner, 2022). A design-led methodology offers a structured approach to R&D roadmap development, emphasising stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and alignment with industry objectives. By leveraging design principles, mining companies can ensure that their R&D initiatives are responsive to evolving challenges and opportunities, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Against this backdrop, the project aims to address the pressing challenges associated with sustainability and circular economy in the mining industry. Through the development of R&D roadmaps and the application of a design-led methodology, the project seeks to identify innovative solutions for enhancing resource efficiency, minimising environmental impacts, and promoting sustainable practices within mining operations. This paper highlights the collaborative efforts among Isle, the mining industry, and water utilities, which have yielded tangible benefits. The study demonstrates how the outcomes from the roadmaps outlined below effectively align research with strategic objectives, fostering innovation to address pressing challenges.

With the proliferation of new sensor technologies, acquiring multiple data sets over the same ground is becoming cheaper and easier than ever. This new, higher resolution multivariate data provides a significant resource for exploration and resource geologists but comes with the added complexity of effectively integrating the various data sets in useful and meaningful ways to elucidate new geological understanding. Both geophysical data sets and hyperspectral data are extensively used for exploration targeting, providing different information at different resolutions and crustal scales. One of the biggest challenges comes from trying to effectively integrate data sets that record very different physical properties, across the different scales these data are captured at, in a way which can allow for a data-driven analysis of these combined data sets.

Wiluna Mining Corporation are progressively re-entering the old Wiluna underground mining complex. The existing underground was abandoned in 2013 by previous owners and left to flood with water levels reaching above the East Pit portal and Happy Jack Pit portal and up to 300 m below surface in the Bulletin underground. Re-entering the mine commenced in 2017 with dewatering of the Bulletin decline. The underground development had been previously supported with friction bolts, with weld mesh in places. Until mid-2021 rehabilitation requirements were based on an external visual inspection of the installed ground support scheme. However, several incidents involving falls of ground due to corroded bolts have occurred during this time, showing that this approach was inadequate. The challenge the operation faced was should the entire decline be rehabilitated, the implication being not only a large rehabilitation cost but also the impact of severe delays to the mining schedule. The question was asked can the operation better understand the level of corrosion damage and potentially optimise rehabilitation requirements. A proposal to use a systematic approach to assess corrosion by environmental condition mapping, visual external corrosion assessment, and internal corrosion assessment via borehole camera inspections was provided and accepted by Wiluna Mining Corporation. The objective of this work was to produce a three-dimensional map showing the degree of corrosion on the reinforcement systems in the capital infrastructure, this would then be used to risk assess and prioritise rehabilitation requirements. This paper summarises the approach, methodology and results that provided the Wiluna mine planning team with information to enable planning of resources and budget to justify priorities of rehabilitation.

With staff productivity and retention a crucial factor in the longevity of AustraliaÆs mining industry, some mining companies are increasing their focus on the health and well-being of their people, to minimise the risks of deteriorating health in an ageing workforce. Many of AustraliaÆs mining operations rely heavily on long distance commuter (LDC) rosters, which are argued to have a significant impact upon worker health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices. The potential impact of workforce health on mine safety performance, efficiency and operating practice is an interesting additional line of enquiry. Food choice, exercise and recreation initiatives offer living and working conditions that æempower healthy choicesÆ in the shift worker community, but do not guarantee improved worker wellbeing. This paper explores first-hand the experiences of one individual over two and a half years of employment at different mine sites, under different shift conditions and across different operating crews. "Ventilation risks in an underground mine have essentially remained the same for centuries, yet theevidence suggests that there are many coal mines that have failed to adequately control these risks.The conduit for the knowledge learned by previous generations exists in the mining legislation. In an ideal world, mines would not need legislation to tell them what to do; they would resolve the risks to an acceptable level so as to protect the safety of persons in the mines based on the acquired knowledge. There will be some who have been personally aff ected by a mining disaster but for the majority they will be remembered as a vague recollection of an event from long ago. The mining legislation is the repository for the knowledge and outcomes from inquiries of past disasters. The challenge for the current generation, and the generations to come is to appreciate the legislation that exists, so as to not ælearn the hard wayÆ. In reviewing most disasters there is comment or discussion on the adequacy of the legislation, which ultimately results in some amendment to the law. For each person, there is an increasing responsibility to ensure that the same mistakes are not repeated. Understanding the legislation, its history and its purpose is the fi rst step in ensuring thatventilation risks are eff ectively managed. Failing to do this will be disastrous. This paper discussesthe relevance, importance and potential pitfalls of coal mine ventilation regulation."

The Hazelwood Mine (HM) commenced operations in the 1950s and was originally operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) prior to it becoming privatised. ENGIE, the current owners of the Hazelwood Mine ceased operations in 2017 and have since transitioned the site into the rehabilitation and closure phase, which is to encompass a full pit lake as part of the final landform. A key aspect of HM closure is the maintenance of long-term stability of the pit slopes to deliver a final landform which is safe and sustainable, particularly given its proximity to critical public receptors. The Princes Freeway, which is the primary access route to the Latrobe Valley (LV), and the Morwell Township are both located immediately to the north of the HM. In today’s operating environment many conventional cleaner circuits struggle to produce final grade concentrate with acceptable levels of non-sulfide gangue and/or penalty elements. This is primarily due to poor selectivity and the entrainment of gangue, and is further exacerbated by the processing of lower grade ores with more complex mineralogy that require finer grinding for liberation. In new concentrators, the standard approach to cleaner circuit design is to define the number of stages of mechanical cells required to achieve the desired concentrate grade. Residence time is the primary factor to size cells and to determine the number of cells required to attain target recovery. While it is required for recovery, a bank of mechanical cells is not the ideal solution to maximise concentrate grade. Relatively coarse bubble size means slow flotation of fines, requiring long residence times. The combination of long residence times and no froth washing means higher entrainment as the pulp becomes more barren and froth stability decreases down a bank.In recent years, the Jameson Cell technology has been retrofitted into a number of concentrators around the world to solve both cleaner circuit capacity and concentrate grade issues. Jameson Cells have been installed at the head of conventional cleaner circuits to produce final grade concentrate in a single step of flotation using a single cell (referred to here as ‘cleaner scalping’ duty). The experience gained from these installations has provided the platform for the design of improved and simpler cleaner circuits that will perform better and be more robust to operate. This paper analyses traditional cleaner circuit designs and explains the philosophy behind new hybrid cleaner circuits, which use Jameson Cells to produce final concentrate and mechanical cells for a ‘cleaner scavenger’ duty. The advantages of the new cleaner circuit design are demonstrated by a case study from an operating plant. Engineering studies show that the better metallurgical performance can be achieved with less equipment than conventional cleaning designs, reducing capital cost, operating cost, and with more than 30 per cent energy savings.Finally, the paper describes simple modifications to the standard laboratory flotation test procedures which accurately simulate this new cleaner circuit using routine equipment.CITATION:Huynh, L, Araya, R, Seaman, D R, Harbort, G and Munro, P D, 2014. In underground mines experiencing dynamic events, there is an ever-present challenge to design and maintain a capable ground support system. One key component of ground support systems is surface support, which serves the essential roles of retaining failed rock and transferring forces generated by surface displacement to rock bolts or other support elements. Observations underground show that in many instances, standard mesh panels alone do not provide sufficient dynamic support to retain substantial bulking failures imposing displacement onto mesh, and in such cases Mesh straps and W-straps may be employed. Determining the performance of surface support elements proves to be difficult, with a multitude of variables at play in the underground environment. Quite comprehensive work has been completed on laboratory testing of surface support systems; however, very little work has been conducted on in situ dynamic testing of Mesh straps and W-straps. In 2019 in Western Area’s Flying Fox Mine, in situ dynamic testing was conducted on a series of Mesh straps and W-straps using Sandvik’s in situ Dynamic Test Rig (DTR). The testing regime applied impact energies from 5.1 to 15.3 kJ to Mesh straps and W-straps. The performance of the straps that did not fail was a maximum absorbed energy of 9.3 kJ and 14.2 kJ for the Mesh straps and W-straps respectively. The testing successfully demonstrated the ability of Sandvik’s DTR to test not only rock bolts, but also surface support elements, creating new testing and research possibilities. The testing also provided important design guidance data that is not practicable to obtain using laboratory dynamic testing facilities.

The carbon neutrality continues to require reduction of carbon usage in ironmaking and steelmaking processes. Specially, it is expected that the hot metal ratio (HMR) in the steelmaking process should be reduced essentially. Unfortunately, the reduction of the HMR in converter can bring about poor environment for nitrogen removal from molten Fe. From this situation, nitrogen prediction model has been developed to understand the fundamental of behaviour of nitrogen and quantitatively interpret its content changes in the converter process. Thermodynamic and kinetic approaches were improved based on existing mathematical model and attempted to predict nitrogen content in realtime by combining process data. In present study, heat supply from the oxidation (mainly carbon and silicon) and CO evolution in the converter are considered, and scrap melting due to the heat transfer from the molten Fe to the solid scrap charged in the converter also be considered.

In narrow orebodies the use of ordinary kriging (OK) may pose certain limitations when used for grade control modelling. The smoothing effect of kriging, by its very nature, cannot retain or accurately characterise the dispersion (variability) that is inherent in gold deposits. This dispersion is a critical component of determining the desired level of ore loss and dilution.Fixed block model positions used in OK, and all estimation approaches, within a grade control process may never align with the ‘true’ ore boundary. This may lead to excessive ore loss and dilution, especially within narrow lodes.Using a risk-based approach to ore block design based on the geostatistical method of conditional simulation (CS) can highlight the differences achieved when an alternative method to OK is used for grade control modelling. By using a mesh of nodes and the application of a ‘transfer function’ to the simulation models, the position for ore contacts can be better assessed than when using fixed blocks in OK. Therefore, the value of various ore block boundaries can be better analysed by objective assessment of ore loss and dilution for a given minimum mining selectivity (selective mining unit or SMU), even in narrow lodes.A case study of a narrow vein gold deposit, comparing the results from an OK model and a CS model shows that whilst both models show similar trends – waste, low-grade, and high-grade regions are the same in both cases – the simulation model can provide greater insight for optimal definition of the mineralisation boundary.CITATION:Haylett, M E, Weeks, A, Matthews, G D and Khosrowshahi, S, 2014. As underground mines become more geotechnically challenging with increasing depth and excavation size, the requirement for ground support to be installed as per design becomes more critical. The verification of installation quality for cable bolts and grouted rock bolts is difficult to assess. Current methods to control quality have limitations; pull testing is largely inconclusive with only extremely poor installation being identifiable. Audits during installation can only capture a small percentage of installed bolts. Following large rock mass displacement from either squeezing ground or seismic events, even previously well installed bolts may have yielded and require replacement. A method to provide an improved understanding of the reinforcement installation quality is Non- Destructive Testing (NDT) using acoustic reflection. To validate the accuracy of an NDT system, both plain and bulbed strand cable bolts were grouted in clear plastic tubes. The encapsulation grout quality was deliberately varied from full encapsulation through to partial encapsulation and a range of different size voids. The clear tubes allowed the ground encapsulation to be observed. Cable bolts strands were cut at varying lengths and different water cement grout ratios were used. Acoustic testing of the cable bolt specimens was completed blind; the technicians were not aware of what was being tested. The NDT results correlated well with the grout encapsulation, with differences between full encapsulation, minor voids and major voids being determined. The different water cement ratio and bolt lengths (including when partially cut) were also identifiable but with some discrepancies. Trials of the technology underground have also shown the data collection process to be relatively quick with each bolt taking 1-2 minutes to test, with interpretation of the results able to be completed soon after. The NDT results collected from the underground trial showed a wide variance in cable bolt grout encapsulation quality indicating that there were installation issues.

The west coast of New Zealand’s south island is host to a large number of placer goldfields that stretch from the Westport area in the north to Gillespies Beach in the south and inland to the foothills of the Southern Alps. This area is host to a large number of alluvial, glacial and strand line deposits ageing in range from Recent to Tertiary. In recent years exploration models have been developed for off shore placer deposits on the continental shelf.Gold mining on the west coast has exploited placer gold resources from the 1860s to present, and with the recent surge in the gold price the industry is currently undergoing a resurgence. The current increase in mining is dominated by small-scale mechanical operations usually involving one to two people at each site; a few larger operations also exist such as the Grey River Dredge.Mining methods range from using floating bucket dredges to small diggers. Some of the mining technologies used are similar to those employed during the great gold rushes of the 19th century. Exploration and grade control techniques can be very rudimentary often relying on previous sampling programs or wide spaced bulk sample drill holes. Some bulk sample drilling is used on the larger operations as a form of grade control, most of the small operations tend not to use any ore control sampling prior to mining. Extraction techniques relying on simple gravity based designs with riffle tables or spirals are the most commonly used. Environmental standards are very high within New Zealand and require operators to return mined areas to preagreed to landforms. The high rainfall experienced on the west coast causes challenges to operators in regard to water quality. Technical issues combined with often limited capital provide for challenges to the operations.

Effective domaining is fundamental to geostatistical modelling for grade control. Through analysis of lithological, structural and alteration logging data, effective groupings (domains) can be identified and employed for estimation or simulation purposes.The poor definition of domains can adversely affect the grade control model resulting in a misinterpretation of the optimal ore-waste boundary and ultimately reduces the quality of recovered ore. The implementation of an appropriate domaining strategy is therefore expected to improve recovery and reconciliation.A thorough understanding of the geology of the deposit and adequate sample data is required for selecting domains. For new deposits, a resource drill database and resource model may be the only information available. Where extension to a previous operation is taking place, historic grade control, mapping and exposed geology may be used to improve domain selection. Preconceptions about domains, should they exist, need to be re-evaluated and tested to ensure they are fit for the purposes of grade control.While mining progresses, the domain model is re-evaluated to ensure that the previous interpretation is still suitable for the present configuration and geology. The grade control process, being iterative, lends itself to regular review and continuous improvement as further data is collected during the grade control cycle. Regular updates to the geology model, mapping, geostatistical data analysis and review of variography will provide indications of a changing domaining environment.Narrow vein gold deposits, which may have several factors influencing mineralisation, present considerable domaining challenges. The material properties and hence performance of saturated alluvial sediments slope can be incorrectly forecast if the water content is not preserved, and materials properties not correctly determined. The occurrence of saturated sediments in the Western Australia (WA) Goldfields, while not common, should be a significant investigation focus. Geotechnical engineers new to the area may be unaware of this and hence the importance of correct testing and determination of the material strength. Application of appropriate analysis to determine stable pit slopes to an acceptable level of risk, is not possible unless the appropriate strength and hydrogeological parameters have been established at the outset. A back analysis is presented of a pit that had extensive slope failures in alluvial clay-rich sediments with discussion on the approach adopted by the original design engineers to assess pit wall stability and consequent poor slope performance. Learnings from a full pit 3D back analysis are presented, with an approach to geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and analysis for slopes in similar materials.

An estimation geologist has many tools in their kit and using the correct one for the job is vital for creating a useful model. Reconciliation is a key step to monitor the performance of a resource model and to ensure the correct tools have been selected and appropriate parameters are set. This paper presents an example of refining the estimation methodology for a Channel Iron Deposit (CID), resulting in an improved model. Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) CIDs are unique iron ore deposits located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and contribute a significant volume to the world’s seaborne iron ore market. A problematic feature of these deposits is the irregular dispersion of clay pods that cannot be delineated with confidence within the resolution of the exploration drilling. Resource to grade control reconciliation showed an over-prediction of high-grade material in the resource model. A fresh approach was required to improve grade and tonnage predictions. Historically, clay pods were delineated using traditional wireframing techniques and estimated using ordinary kriging with hard boundaries. The new method utilised indicator kriging to estimate the probability of clay. Probabilities generated from the indicator kriging estimate were used as an additional weighting following the ordinary kriging of grades. Results showed indicator kriging improved global high-grade tonnes reconciliation, however, as expected, it did not improve the spatial prediction of clay. Based on improved reconciliation results indicator kriging has now been adopted as a suitable alternative for analogous CIDs at RTIO. These improvements benefit the mine planning process, but do not replace grade control models.

Photogrammetry-based techniques supported by traditional mapping tools are more frequently used for open pit geotechnical mapping. It fundamentally involves the collection of geological, structural and rock mass data from pit batters when safe to do so. These are essential components for refining and implementing continuous improvements to geotechnical models. The geotechnical model is used to review bench performance, optimise geotechnical design parameters, interpretation and analysis of pit slope stability. This paper is a case study of implementing different pit mapping methods at Mount Carlton gold mine, North Queensland. It critically reviews the tools required, including the Brunton compass, mobile application Clino, geotechnical data mapping software CloudCompare (2015) and Sirovision software. The review compares the image precision, structural measurements and data analysis. The review also underlines mine site management philosophy for safe geotechnical data collection to identify in-pit geotechnical hazards and the mitigation of potential slope instability. Sirovision is a remote sensing system for site geology mapping and interpreting geotechnical characteristics of exposed mining faces. The system utilises off-the-shelf digital SLR cameras to capture stereo photographs of the rock face and uses the latest image processing technology to generate accurate 3D models. These 3D models are digitally analysed using computational geometry to extract unbiased and accurate geological and geotechnical data. CloudCompare processes high accuracy 3D dense cloud rock surfaces reconstructed with photogrammetry software to extract the geological planes using the FACET or Compass plugins. The major discontinuity sets can be observed and the orientation (dip/dip direction) obtained from the algorithm is accurate and reliable for geotechnical assessment, including kinematic and rock slope stability analysis.

"This is a reprise of the paper ‘Back to the Future – Why Change Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Progress’ presented to the Tenth Mill Operators’ Conference in 2009. It was observed that the ‘boom and bust’ cycles of the industry, together with trends in tertiary education and the effects of fly-in fly-out (FIFO) operations raised serious questions about the sustainability of human capital in the mineral processing sector.In 2016 we find ourselves in a ‘bust’ after enjoying a decade of the longest commodity price ‘boom’ in a century. In the ‘boom’ did we:make any technological breakthroughs?put measures in place to improve our human capital, especially in the area of ‘professional formation’?The paper makes observations on the current performance of mineral processing engineers and the organisational milieu in which they operate. "Evolution Mining is the sole owner of the Mt Rawdon open cut operation, located 75 km south-west of Bundaberg in Queensland, Australia (Figure 1). It is a massive, volcanically hosted, low-grade gold deposit that exhibits excellent characteristics conducive to low cost mining and treatment.In 2014, Mt Rawdon began investigating initiatives to deliver higher mill throughputs without any significant capital expenditure or modifications to the existing processing plant. Various studies have shown throughput increases are possible by applying more blast energy, essentially by reducing feed size through blasting and leaving less work for the comminution circuits (Brent et al, 2013; Ziemski, 2011; Workman and Eloranta, 2003).Given that 53 per cent of energy used on a mine site is consumed by the comminution circuit, with only two per cent being consumed by drill and blast (Smith, 2013), it makes logical sense for a mining operation to align their drill and blast with their processing plant. The term commonly used when exploring this relationship is a ‘Mine to Mill’ program.Over nearly 12 months, various blasting options and Mine to Mill methodologies were tested at Mt Rawdon. Throughout the journey, it was abundantly clear that the Mine to Mill initiative is not as simple as making one technical or physical change and expecting an improvement. Rather, true sustainable improvements demand a paradigm shift across both the mining and processing cultures, where all departments are aligned and working towards the one outcome. The aim of the circular economy is to accelerate the transition from a conventional linear take-make-dispose economic model to a circular model. It is restorative and regenerative by design and aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times.
