Highly saline process water has a number of implications for the CIP process during the leaching, adsorption and recovery of gold. The reduced oxygen solubility in saline water can seriously reduce the rate of gold leaching, while dissolved oxygen meters do not necessarily reveal actual oxygen concentrations in saline water. High levels of magnesium in the ground water necessitate operation at lower pH (-9), with the potential for greater cyanide loss via HCN stripping. In addition increasing salinity renders viscosity modifiers largely ineffective.The adsorption capacity of aurocyanide onto activated carbon is improved with increasing salinity, but misleading results can be obtained in assessment of gold loading kinetics of plant carbon samples already loaded, or partially loaded, in saline water if subsequently tested in fresh water. Elevated chloride levels in the Zadra elution process can cause severe anode corrosion in the elecuowinning cell. The Anglo elution process is tolerant to only slight increases in water salinity, but elution times can be reduced by ethanol addition. Care is required in carbon regeneration, as salts can catalyse carbon decomposition as well as increase kiln corrosion.

The Pajingo ore bodies consist mainly of auriferous quartz veins hosted by a suite of hydrothermally altered andesitic pyroclastics, volcanics and epiclastic sediments. Scott lode, the main economic deposit in the area, lies in a zone of major structural disruption and contortion. High grade gold and silver mineralisation is selectively mined by open pit methods. Standard grade control techniques and extraction methods were adapted to minimise mining dilution and to maximise metal recovery. Basic blending of grade ranges at the crusher has produced an average 10 gram/tonne gold head grade. The estimation of ore reserves calculated by both standard polygonal and geostatistical methods proved acceptable. Mineable reserves when compared to in pit reserves defined by blast hole drilling, indicate a decrease in tonnes and an increase in the grade resulting in an acceptable comparison of the total ounces of contained gold. The ore reconciliation of mined against milled ounces indicates that both ore reserve and grade control models underestimate the metal content in the orebody. Sampling techniques are being examined in an attempt to reduce this discrepancy.

Vitrinite of humic source (often designated as vitrinite A) is the maceral by which the rank of a coal ought to be determined. Therefore its recognition, and the precise identification of other vitrinites is essential. The majority of Australian petrologists are not differentiating between the vitrinite group macerals in maturation studies, the results of which have led to unexplained phenomena in coal characterisations and evaluation, such as 'reactive inertinites' and inaccurate predictions in petroleum source rock studies. The Callide coal has been chosen as a case study, with examples from other coals. The coal seams from the Callide Coal Measures show variation in the predominance of some macerals, indicating successions of environmental changes. The application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to the study of the Callide coal has enabled a better understanding of the nature and origin of some of the less understood macerals such as micrinite and vitrinite B. Two forms of vitrinite have been observed, each with a distinct reflectance range. The wood-sourced vitrinite A displays an average reflectance of 0.56 per cent, and a range of 05. - 0.7, implying a higher rank than the 0.49 per cent Ro total vitrinite reflectance recorded in previous publications. Vitrinite B is one of the most commonly-occurring macerals in the Callide coal. The lower-reflecting vitrinite B which forms bands, often several hundred microns in thickness, in TEM appears to be electron transparent lipid rich. Vitrinite B is interpreted to represent accumulations of leaves, and is believed to be a major source of hydrocarbons in Australian sedimentary basins. The Callide coal has entered the oil window, and oil has been generated from some exinite, cutinite, and resinite, as evident from the amber to light brown fluorescence of exinite and the presence of exsudatinite in cell cavities and cleats. However vitrinite B, the major potential source of oil, is seen under the microscope to be generating oil, thus placing this coal at the top of the oil window. Micrinite, the origin of which has been much debated, occurs as cell filling or infill of spaces between laminations in vitrinite B.

Industrial processes involving multi-phase flows such as flotation require understanding of the relationships between bubbles, solid particles and the flow. Modern experimental tools are employed in this effort to measure with great accuracy the basic features of the motion of all three phases in turbulent flow. We employed a unique digital particle image velocimeter (DPIV) that can record with great accuracy and kHz temporal resolution, velocity vectors of all three phases, namely the fluid, the solid particles and the air bubbles. The interaction of these three phases was studied in homogeneous isotropic turbulence generated by cylindrical grids. Particles and bubbles were released into the turbulence and the motions of the three phases were monitored. The experimental results obtained in the present work were compared with the predictions of the models published in the literature.

The Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone (ASH) has been developed for the fast and efficient flotation of fine mineral particles in a centrifugal field during the past decade at the University of Utah. Over the years, the air-sparged hydrocyclone unit has shown promising potential for the flotation of copper porphyry ore, low-grade placer gold and auriferous pyrite ores, various industrial minerals, and fine coal cleaning. Many fundamental studies including the X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis have been carried out in order to understand the multiphase fluid flow phenomena associated with ASH flotation. With data available from these studies, it is now possible to construct more accurate ASH flotation models for different applications in order to analyse the behaviour of the system and to optimise design and operating variables. The ASH flotation model developed in this paper is based on the data given in `Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone/Advanced Froth Flotation Fine Coal Cleaning', Final Report, DOE Contract No DE-AC-88PC88853, submitted by Pennsylvania Electric Company (PENELEC), December 1989. Data from several hundred experiments with the two-inch ASH-2C air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity 0.1 - 0.3 tph dry coal) are available from the report and have been used for this analysis. In the past, a preliminary model based on limited data had been developed. The current study, however, emphasises the global behaviour of the ASH system by utilising almost all the data from the report for the purpose of scale-up and industrial application. There are two parts in the current modeling and analysis effort for ASH flotation of fine coal. The first part is the modeling/analysis of dimensionless ratio of overflow opening area to underflow opening area, A*, and the dimensionless ratio of air flowrate to slurry flowrate, Q . The second part involves the modelling/analysis of all other variables in the system and an expert system for operation and control is introduced.

The Martha Mine is an open cut operation situated in the midst of Waihi town which has been operating since 1987. Since then it has produced some 700,000 ounces (oz) of gold and 4,000,000 oz of silver from an epithermal vein system. It was previously worked by underground methods from 1880 to 1952 to a depth of 600 m producing 5 million ounces (Moz) of gold and 30 Moz of silver. The licensed reserves are scheduled to be mined out early in the year 2001. An additional economic resource of over 750,000 oz of gold has been identified which can be accessed by deepening the pit a further 50 m along the main Martha vein. This would extend the mine life to the year 2007. Applications were lodged on 4 July 1997 for the necessary resource consents, discharge permits and variations for the current Mining Licence conditions. The extension project requires approval from the District Council, Regional Council and the Ministry of Commerce. The consent and permitting process is extensive because of the urban setting of the mine. An approach to keep the extension as similar as possible to the current operations was adopted to give the community and authority confidence in the proposed extension. This paper summarises the extension detail and the permitting requirements it has had to address despite the extension being "more of the same". The permitting process has been exhaustive with little recognition of the standards already achieved in protecting the environment which are recognised worldwide.

At the operation of mine winders in deep shafts considerable oscillations of winding ropes may occur due to elasticity of both wind-ing and balance ropes. The amplitudes of longitudinal oscillations may reach + lm at relatively low frequencies, ranging from 0.5 to 2 c/s. These oscillations may be dangereus for the rope and produce several hazards to the winding installation as a whole. They may cause conside-rable instant accelerations on the pulley and dangerous tensions in ro-pe wires. The excessive acceleration may cause the uncontrolled rope slip on the pulley. Several methods of limitation of these accelera-tions were developed, some of them have been already in control system: of electric drive of the winder. The most simple ones are: a/ limita-tion of the rate of change of acceleration and retardation of the win-der /so called "jerk"/ and b/ the proper selection of regulators of the winder control system to get the optimal control. The trouble in solv-ing the problem of rope oscillations is that the dynamic system of the winder is a nonstationaryone owing to changing distance of conveyance from the pulley. Besides, the system is described by the equations with distributed parameters. The brief discussion of the theory and its practical aspects are enclosed as well.

Mining, like most other businesses, is based upon capital assets; and the primary cap- ital of any mining company is its ore reserve. A company's survival and growth is, thus, dep- endent upon its ability to replace, increase, redistribute and to diversify its ore reserves. A Kennecott executive addressing a group of geologists in 1957 stated, "Management expects a geologist to find ore! That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

IncoÆs Clarabelle mill currently processes ores from eight mines in the Sudbury basin area in Ontario, Canada. The ore from the Garson mine contains a much higher concentration of arsenic than the other ores. Adding this ore into the feed to the mill has resulted in an increase in arsenic content of the Cu-Ni bulk concentrate to a level that significantly affects the smelter operation, and more importantly the efficiency of Cu-Ni separation in the Matte separation plant. The arsenic occurs mainly as gersdorffite (NiAsS), with a small amount being in the form of cobaltite (CoAsS). Extensive laboratory tests on depressing arsenic in Garson ore flotation have been conducted and two reagent suites have been identified as effective arsenic depressants. One is the so called MAA depressant which is a mixture of magnesium chloride, ammonium chloride, and ammonium hydroxide. This reagent combination was reported to depress other arsenide minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and enargite (Cu3AsS4). However, in this study for the first time it has been shown to have a depressing effect on gersdorffite. The other reagent suite, a mixture of triethylenetetramine (TETA) and sodium sulfite, that has been reported as an effective pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) depressant in pentlandite ((NiFe)9S8) flotation, has not been reported as gersdorffite depressant before. The effectiveness of both reagent suites is more pronounced when the arsenic minerals are oxidised through pulp aeration or the addition of hydrogen peroxide. With a flow sheet consisting of a magnetic separation, rougher- scavenger flotation, followed by regrinding and cleaning of combined magnetic and scavenger concentrate, the arsenic recovery to the final Cu-Ni bulk concentrate was reduced from 73 per cent in baseline test to less than 30 per cent with either reagent suite at no decrease in nickel recovery. The TETA/sulfite reagent combination has the advantage over the MAA suite in that pyrrhotite is also depressed, rather than being activated, and the copper and nickel concentrate grades are therefore increased.

The mining of iron ore is a high volume low margin business because the value of this commodity is significantly lower than that of base metals. The main metallurgical challenges in most of the iron ore projects proposed for treatment nowadays have been in finding the optimum flowsheet for the treatment of magnetite ores, mixed magnetite-hematite ores and even ores that have banded ironstone formations (BIF). The associated plant designs incorporate very high capacity milling systems to grind the ore down prior to magnetic separation and in being highly capital intensive requires substantial investment in mega processing plants with associated infrastructure to mill down the run-of-mine ore to the desired treatment size for upgrading.To minimise the cost of infrastructure, better beneficiation techniques and technologies are being sought to assist in reducing upfront ROM feed to allow for reduction in overall treatment plant footprint necessary in extracting the desired downstream product. This paper discusses such beneficiation techniques and advancement in technologies for the upgrading of coarse and fine iron ore utilising dense media separation (DMS), jigging, wet magnetic separation, dry magnetic separation, flotation and x-ray processing.Another group of iron ore projects involve the mining of hematite ore below the water table. Often the mined ore is wet and sticky. This combination requires high capacity processing of feed material utilising large scrubbers or attritioning units to effectively remove the slimes component present in the feedstock. The fines removed, usually below 1 mm, are then discarded in large tailings storage facilities. Approaches to recovering the saleable material contained within these fines will also be investigated in this paper. This not only implies possible reduction in slimes discard footprint, but also holds potential benefit in augmenting overall yield and recovery of hematite product.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, 2013. Large Off Highway Trucks operated in this country are generally of Diesel Electric Drive, this system tends to employ the familiar Electric Wheel. A number of fleets now employ the Traction Motor System as an alternative. An investigation is made of the operation of two such fleets. A brief description is given defining the components and their basic functions in each system. Available life history is presented and system reliability, maintainability and operator reaction is examined. Although manufacturers are now offering mechanical or mechanical/hydraulic drives in the larger machines comments will be restricted to examining the Diesel Electric System. Since commencing operations in the mid 1960 period Hamersley Iron has made use of the diesel electric drive system using the familiar Electric Wheel. The reduction of an ilmenite concentrate with coal at 1000, 1050 and 1100¦C was investigated using thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis of the product. The effects of temperature, coal particle size, addition of ferric chloride and preheating of the concentrate in argon on the reduction kinetics and mechanism were determined. The rate of reduction increased significantly with temperature and was enhanced by the addition of the catalyst. The morphology of the iron was primarily determined by the degree of weathering of the particle. Significant coarsening of iron was obtained in the dense particles by the addition of ferric chloride. The sequence of reduction and the enhancement in the rate of reduction by preheating the concentrate in an inert atmosphere are discussed.

Zircon is extensively used as moulding sand in the production of steel and high-duty iron castings. To achieve a satisfactory grade of zircon concentrate, the zircon particles may need ,to have surface coatings removed, as such coatings can hinder electrostatic and magnetic separation of zircon from associated minerals. Xn addition the presence of surface coatings on the zircon. particles can cause sinterins and fusion of the zircon to the east metal resulting in "burnt-on" sand or fritting of the casting. "Burnon" necessitates cleaning of the casting by grinding or chipping, which is expensive and results in loss of definition on the casting face.Hudson (1966) has pointed out ,that some coatings on mineral sands are lightly-adhering clays which can be removed quite readily by agitating the sands in water for a few minutes-thus their removal constitutesno problem. However, the heavy gingery coloured coating which adheres strongly to the surface of the particles in some deposits, and which has generally been considered to be a form of iron oxide (Baker, 1962; Hudson, 1966), cannot be removed effectively by attrition cleaning in water (Hudson, 1966). Such coatings limit the usefulness of these concentrates in the foundry industry.An investigation of strongly-adhering coatings on "ginger zircon" concentrates from the Yoganup deposit of Westralian Sands Ltd has shown that the stain consists of a cemented mixtvre of hydrated iron and aluminium oxides and kaolin minerals, and that it can be removed by a relatively low cost treatment.IDENTIFICATION OF THE STAIN BY XRDX-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns were obtained from small samples of stain scraped, individually, from the surface of hand-picked zircon and ilmenite crystals. These scrapings were mounted on quartz fibres and exposed to CoKa radiation in a 57 mm Debye camera. To avoid heavy fogging of the x-ray films, a substantial amount of the iron oxides was preferentially leached from the scrapings (before mounting) with an ammonium oxalate-oxalic acid solution (Rooksby, 1961). Subaqueous water-rock reactions that occur at the pit wall/lake water interface can affect the pH of pit lakes. Many pit lake water chemistry models neglect subaqueous reactions, which may create inaccurate predictions over time. A mineral quantification method is presented that defines the wall rock mineralogy of active open pit mines, using samples collected from the Martha Mine, a low-sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag deposit in Waihi, New Zealand. The mineral quantification method has five components: field observations and sampling, X-ray diffraction analyses, selection of representative samples, geochemical analyses, and mineral accounting. Predicted mineral concentrations closely match observed mineral concentrations visually estimated using petrographic techniques. Results of the method can be incorporated into a geochemical model of long-range pit lake water quality resulting from subaqueous water-rock reactions.

In 1984 the Board prepared a report that dealt with the Blue Mountains Sewage Effluent Management study. Successive 3ovemments have been concerned about development in the 3lue Mountains and the effect this development is having on the luality of the streams flowing into the Blue Mountains National ?ark (presently up for World Heritage Listing).

Wetherstones gold deposit is located just east of the township of Lawrence, in the Otago District of the South Island, New Zealand. The paper will describe aspects of the mining and exploration history of the Wetherstones gold field, current knowledge of the geology of the deposit, and speculate on possible outcomes of exploration in the modern era.   As at the famed Gabriels Gully situated nearby, most of the Wetherstones gold is/was contained in, or recycled into modern drainages from, the Blue Spur Conglomerate (æBSCÆ). The BSC is the basal member of a wedge of auriferous non-marine sediments of latest Cretaceous age which are tilted against the Tuapeka Fault Zone, a structure of regional dimensions. In particular mineralisation of elevated grade (which cannot yet be reliably estimated) appears to be concentrated in an elongate basement depression (ægutterÆ) of width around 100 m, variable thickness to a few metres, and axial length in excess of 500 m. The gutter plunges from the base of alluvial mining (where it has been partly exploited by underground methods) to depths of more than 100 m, beyond which it remains open and untested.   The prospects for a revival of mining at Wetherstones depend upon confirmation of what is here inferred to exist, and the discovery of additional gold. The economic prospects of the project however are enhanced by what is known or indicated of the geographic location, and anticipated geologic, mining and metallurgical characteristics of the mineralisation, and consequent anticipated environmental management issues.   The recognition of gold contained in pyrite in the BSC represents an upside to project economics which has never previously been evaluated. The Wetherstones Basin covers more than five square kilometres in areal extent. There is no modern exploration record of the majority of this area, leaving open the prospect of the discovery of additional gutters, and primary mineralisation in the underlying schist.   Australasia Gold Ltd has embarked on a program to reassess the potential resources of the Wetherstones gold mineralisation, and to evaluate the feasibility of mining.

X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is used videly for routine quality control of the mining, )lending and agglomeration of iron ores. Most )f the procedures used, cannot tolerate significant changes in matrix composition or be Lpplied to a wide range of elements. Accord- ngly, a graphite briquette technique which is Lpplicable to some fifty elements in widely Tarying iron ore matrices is described. The ignificant advantages are suitability of the ame preparation for both optical emission and -ray spectrometry, a complete elemental overage for the range 5bcg/g to 100%, and the recision and accuracy of the methods are om.parable with the standard chemical.methods hich have been superseded in the authors' boratories. The proposed methods become ore attractive and economical as more prehensive information is sought.

As a result of commissioning No.5 B F, 2670m3 inner volume, in March 1972, the largest B F in Australia; new expertise in maintenance, furnace operating practices and design have been obtained. This experience has also been extended to the other furnaces. A series of operating problems were con- fronted; all parts of the furnace, including the hearth side walls and bottom,were adversely affected. In December 1977, serious hearth wall wear was detected at No.5 B F, and a potential hearth breakout was averted. Hearth wear in No.4 B F was discovered in March 1979, and emer- gency underhearth cooling was installed to reverse an extremely advanced hearth bottom erosion. Hearth behaviour of No.5 B F oampaign 1972-1978 and`No.4 B F campaign commencing 1972, has been studied and discussions on the causes, effects and measures undertaken to protect the hearths are presented in this paper.
