This paper reviews the instrumentation and monitoring of blasthole drills and electric mining shovels at a surface coal mine in western Canada. The drill monitoring component involved the development and implementation of microprocessor-based hardware on Bucyrus-Erie 45R and 60R drills. Over a two year period 3800 metres of blasthole drilling were monitored The drill data was subsequently correlated with core and geophysical logs towards identifying unique and reproducible ranges of performance parameter data for the different rock types penetrated. Using this technique, the geology of the study area benches was characterized in detail. Once these same benches had been blasted, the performance of a P&H 2800XP shovel was monitored as it worked through the blasted ground. In this regard, the influence of different digging conditions on shovel performance were identified in a range of blast and geological environments within the study area. The precise nature of these environments was confirmed by a correlation with the interpreted drill monitored data and muckpile size distributions obtained from a digital photo-analysis study. The excavation of 500 000 bcm of waste was thus monitored and a digging index derived which reflected variations in muckpile diggability. The paper concludes by proposing an integrated monitoring approach which, as a first step, uses interpreted drill data for explosive loading. This capability would permit greater accuracy in explosives loading ie. charge placement within higher strength lithologies, while avoiding weaker units. The performance of an instrumented shovel would then be monitored as it works through the resulting muckpile. Interpretation of the shovel performance data would determine the overall quality of the blast in terms of a digging index (DI), providing an indication of the relative digging effort and the effectiveness of the blast design.

Safety and stability of underground mine openings, coal pillars and water dams in the near vicinity of operating surface mines are endangered from excessive blast induced vibrations. This paper deals with the investigations carried out in four coal mines. Simultaneous measurements at equal distances from the source indicated higher level of vibration on the surface than those produced in the underground workings. The values of peak particle velocity (PPV) measured on coal pillars, body of water dam were lower than those measured on roof and junctions of the roadways. The parting of coal (3-4.5 m) between two sections vibrated with higher PPV compared to the roof of top section and floor of bottom section. In one case the influence of total charge fired in a round was significant in generation of vibration compared to the maximum charge/delay where monitoring was done vertically below the source.

The Sally Malay Project is located 120 km north of Halls Creek in the eastern Kimberley region. Since commissioning, ongoing improvements on the plant have resulted in recoveries now greatly exceeding the initial design targets. The continual optimisation endeavours of the Sally Malay metallurgy department included an automation project that was done in close collaboration with Mintek. In this team effort, several problem areas were addressed and the FloatStar advance control system was successfully commissioned to stabilise and optimise the flotation circuit. The remote location of the Kimberley Nickel Mines operation, fly-in, fly-out roster and the current mining boom makes the acquisition of experienced flotation staff difficult. The implementation of an automated flotation control system reduces this burden and contributes to the training of inexperienced staff. This paper illustrates not only the process control improvements achieved as a result of the installation of the FloatStarÖ advanced control system, but also how it has assisted operational personnel with their understanding of the process.

In this study, a systematic examination of the scale and variety of micro-structures in coal using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been carried out, using coal samples of differing stages of coalification from the Bowen Basin and New Zealand. SEM provides detail of various micro-structural features and shows that a variety of micron-sized fractures and cavities are present in coals. These are differentiated into three pore types: fracture porosity, phyteral porosity and matrix porosity. Fracture porosity is generally associated with bright coals (although it has been shown that micro-fractures are present in maceral fragments from the dull coal layers). Characteristically the macro- and micro- fractures form a continuous structural fabric through the bright coal layers and thus make a significant contribution to overall permeability. The macro- and micro-fractures appear to have been formed during the process of coalification rather than being formed due to shrinkage during methane extraction, as most of them are infilled with secondary minerals. In contrast, phyteral and matrix porosity is associated with the dull coal layers that are composed of plant fragments or a heterogeneous mixture of macerals. Like the macro- and micro-fractures, the continuity of the observed cavities suggest that these too are a significant contribution to overall permeability, and therefore play a major role in the transmissibility of methane at a level between diffusion at the micropore level and laminar flow at the macro-fracture level. Due to different spacing, orientation and persistence of individual fractures and cavities, the rate of methane transmissibility through a coalseam will vary according to coal rank, coal type and the organic precursors from which the coal was derived. This is important as a knowledge of the micro-structure system and its relationship to coal type and coal rank, plays an important consideration in: a) gas drainage modelling, b) enhancing permeability by inducing fractures and c) predicting the occurrence of outbursts.

Choosing a ceramic capillary action filter is often favoured in processes where low energy consumption is important, such as the dewatering of iron ore. In addition, the performance of the filter medium is essential, and the possibility to regenerate the medium is an advantage compared to other types of filter media. Although low, roughly 8 - 9 w-per cent for iron ore concentrate, and even cake moisture is the primary goal of dewatering, the introduction of better filtration processes can result in significant improvements of water economy and material efficiency.As industrial beneficiation processes are often complicated in their chemistry due to impurities originating from the ore itself, from the up-stream processing equipment and from the process water used, the characterisation of the filter media after usage might provide relevant information on what actually takes place during long operating periods. The aim of this study was to obtain new information on the fouling of fi lter media in an iron ore process to enhance and develop the regeneration process of the media in the future.X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterise ceramic filter media used in the dewatering of magnetite. Principal component analysis and discriminant analysis were introduced to identify trends in the data. Two types of media blockages were found to play an important role in an acidic iron ore dewatering process: fouling by slurry particles and by in situ crystallisation of a calcium compound, of which the latter originated from the combination of process water and process chemistry.

The Australian Coal Combustion Testing and Research Facility has been operating commercially for one year and during that period coal product evaluations have been conducted on behalf of four coal companies and one electricity commission. The facility is equipped to assess the behaviour of steaming coal in milling, combustion (including flame stability, burnout and heat transfer), ash deposition and erosion, fly ash collection and gaseous emissions. The relevance of the results of the pilot testing to industrial practice was demonstrated during the calibration of the facility using four coals burnt in Australian power stations. The calibration coals were from the Tarong and Gladstone Power Stations in Queensland, tluja Power Station in Western Australia and Bayswater Power Station in New South Wales. Also an opportunity arose to visit an overseas power station to observe a full scale test burn using one of the early coals tested on a commercial basis in the combustion test facility. The calibration trials showed excellent agreement with industrial coal performance in t:orms of flame stability, turndown, carbon burnout and gaseous emissions. Encouraging correlations were also found in the case of furnace radiation, boiler deposits (slagging and fouling) and electrostatic precipitation. In the case of the last group the only real reservations about the correlations are due to the non-availability or qualitative nature of results collected around the power stations. In all cases there is a high degree of confidence in the facility's ability to predict the relative performance of different coals and in some cases direct numerical predictions can be Made.

Mine planning typically involves designing an operation to uncover coal with the minimum initial costs with reclamation planning and earthworks being done as an "add on" task. The landform is too steep to remain stable, has no drainage and frequently has areas of excessive acidity or alkalinity. Extensive earthworks are required to reduce grades to an acceptable level and create a drainage system. The flexibility available to the mining engineer to alter the post mining landscape clearly depends on the mining methods. Straight dragline stripping provides virtually no flexibility. However most mining operations over the term of current ten year plans have a substantial pre-strip component. It is this pre-strip material which has the potential to reduce the final reshaping earthworks. The reshaping operation itself is subject to some flexibility with various options being available to re-grade and provide drainage. The full utilisation of this flexibility to minimise earthworks cost should be the aim of reclamation design. ACIRL's current thrust in reclamation is aimed at the integration of mine planning and reclamation earthworks. This involves gathering all environment and agricultural criteria and designing the earth works necessary to produce an acceptable final landform. A key component of our work is the use of computer aided design (CADD) for the design of spoil piles, pre-strip dumps and spoil re-shaping. This approach has been applied to a number of mine sites with earthworks operations covering hundreds of hectares and hundreds of millions of cubic metres volume. We are continuing to provide that consultancy service and at the same time are involved in the development of more sophisticated software tools to apply to reclamation design.

The An Shan iron ore deposit is the biggest low-grade oxidised iron deposit in China. Over the past ten years, about 120 SLon verticalring-pulsating high gradient magnetic separators units have been installed in An Shan to process oxidised iron ore. This paper describes how several plants have upgraded their old technologies to new technologies with SLon magnetic separators as the key equipment for controlling tails grades, including using reverse flotation as the key technology for iron concentrate cleaning, These plants have been modernised with beneficial results at low cost.

Three separate and unconfined aquifers occur in the Hilton area, named relative to position in relation to ore horizons: Footwall Aquifer in the east; Ore-Zone Aquifer within the ore-bearing Urquhart Shales; and the Hangingwall Aquifer in the west.It is the on-going strategy it Hilton to drain the Ore-Zone Aquifer which occupies structurally- and sulphide-controlled leached zones in the steeply west dipping strata. The aquifer affects considerable ore reserves to 480 m below the surface. Dewatering began in 1976, and is essentially completed to 4 level (240 m below surface). Dewatering efforts are now based on 8 level (480 m below surface).

Flotation feed density is an operating parameter which is currently not well understood. Most models of flotation only incorporate its effect on particle residence time, but it is likely to have additional effects within both the pulp and froth phases of the machine. Test work was performed in MetsoÆs 3 m3 RCS test rig to investigate the effect of flotation feed density on metallurgical performance. The rig was operated at Rio TintoÆs Northparkes operation using flotation feed and scavenger tail. For each feed, tests were performed at different feed densities, and measurements were performed to estimate the pulp and froth recovery as well as other key flotation parameters (eg bubble size, turbulence and froth stability). Results of this test work have shown that the pulp density does affect key parameters of the flotation process in both the pulp and froth phases. Pulp phase kinetic rates decrease at high density and this is attributed to a reduction in the turbulence within the cell. Froth phase recovery, however, improves presumably because of a stabilising effect due to a greater loading of solids on bubble surfaces.There is a need for more research to be done to better understand these interactions so that metallurgists can determine the optimum flotation feed density to use at a particular operation, or within a section of a flotation circuit.CITATION:Runge, K C, Tabosa, E, Crosbie, R and McMaster, J K, 2012. Characterisation of hydrothermal gold systems across multiple scales is increasingly important for our understanding of ore deposit genesis and for targeting new mineralisation. Published work on multiscale mineral system exploration focuses either on applying a single technique across scales or on incorporating a series of techniques across a limited scale range. Typically, these studiesÆ spatial scales vary from crustal to deposit-scale and have successfully linked the distribution and shape of major orebodies to fault systems or varying lithostratigraphy. But, is this scale small enough to answer fundamental questions about the relative timing, processes interactions and mechanisms involved in the formation of ore deposits? We illustrate the potential of a deposit to microscale study, using the Plutonic Gold Mine in Western Australia as an example, to better understand hydrothermal gold systems. The nation of Fiji is located the South Pacific on the æRim of FireÆ some four hours flying time from the eastern sea board of Australia. It is a tourist destination situated on the main route from Australia to the Americas. Fiji is a developing country that has had a fewsetbacks but the country has able, happy people that are very resilient. Most importantly, the country is a safe destination for tourists and businesspeople as the local people are friendly, have good ethics, and most speak English. Fiji is a very willing nation, hungry for knowledge and advancement. The Fiji geological setting on the æRim of FireÆ, that runs from New Zealand across the Pacific through Fiji and on to Papua NewGuinea, has many large deposits of gold and copper. Fiji is an exciting destination for mineral explorers with discoveries of gold, silver, manganese, bauxite, iron and copper. Gold was first discovered in 1921 and the first two mines opened in 1935; one of which was Emperor Gold Mining Company (EGM) the other being Mt Kasi. EGM mines gold on the margin of the Tavua caldera, some 85 km north of the Nadi international airport. EGM has operated continuously for close to 70 years, producing approximately 6.9 million ounces of gold and has an underground reserve of 847 600 ounces with a total mineral resource of 12 335 600 tonnes at 10 g/t (as given in the Emperor Mines Limited Annual report 2003). The mineralisation in Fiji is very exciting and it is common to discover spectacular intersections and outcrops, which are typical for this type of epithermal narrow vein mineralisation, but be aware that the orebodies are variable and not easy to understand.

Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and heavy mineral ores (Wills, 1992). Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating many minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid such as water or air (Wills, 2006).The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the slurry concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the splitters used to separate the tailings, middlings and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin and Renaud, 2014). Wash water is an important control variable used to wash away entrapped light minerals from the concentrate stream (Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Sadeghi et al concluded the spiral operation to be sensitive to the wash water flow addition and resultant economic trade-off. Increasing the wash water flow rate increases the concentrate grade at the expense of the iron recovery.The paper addresses the effects of dripping wash water onto the concentrate stream of a spiral processing fine iron ore. The dripping wash water system offers a low flow alternative and could possibly provide a good balance between grade and recovery of valuable minerals without using excessive water. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentrations; the wash water rate and the splitter positions were kept constant.The use of wash water at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration improved the Fe grade in the concentrate by about 1.5 per cent, six per cent and eight per cent respectively. The additional SiO2 rejected by the wash water is approximately three per cent, nine per cent, and 11 per cent at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration respectively. Addition of wash water is shown to have minimum effect on grade at 30 per cent solid concentration, and Fe upgrades obtained with and without wash water were found to be similar. Notable upgrades were observed at 35 and 40 per cent solid concentration with wash water. The results obtained suggest that the additional SiO2 rejection by wash water increases with an increase in solid concentration. This suggests that the benefit of using the drip system is notable at higher solid concentration. It is believed that at lower solid concentration SiO2 particles are reasonably free to move around and are possibly less entrapped than at high solid concentration.The Fe grade/recovery and solid concentration relationship with wash water showed a non-linear correlation. The Fe grade increases with an increase in solid concentration up to a somewhat optimum point and then drops as solid concentration increases further. The recovery of Fe on the other hand follows a converse relationship with solid concentration, the recovery decreases from 30 per cent to 35 per cent solid concentration and then increases again at 40 per cent solid concentration. The increase in recovery at higher solid concentration could possibly be explained by the fact that the mass yield to concentrate also increases with solid concentration. Since recovery is a function of both grade and mass yield, the higher recovery at 40 per cent solid concentration is likely due to the high mass yield obtainable at 40 per cent solid concentration.The drip system could therefore possibly offer a safe guarding against grade and solid concentration variations without using excessive water, and possibly ensure that a product within specification is maintained.CITATION:Ramotsabi, C M, Erasmus, W and Bornman, F, 2015. After review of the status of research on optirnisation of retreat longwall faces it is argued that an acceptable optimisation model must be based upon realistic cost data that take into account not only the face costs, but the total panel costs. These include the cost of development, face cost, removal and installation cost. The determined optimum length of a retreat longwall face is based upon a realistic model and actual costs.Parameters that influence the optimum face length have been varied over wide limits to allow determination of the sensitivity of the model and the effect of the parameters on the optimum face length. It is concluded that for medium production rates and medium system availability, the optimum face length of a retreat longwall face under Australian conditions lies between 180 and 220 metres.

Traditionally, the development of a mineral resource project goes through a fairly set pattern of decisions from what commodities to search for; where to look; how to locate; what are the reserves; how can they be exploited with optimum returns for all stakeholders; where are the markets and what will be the price received; what financing arrangments? However, due to the unique nature of most mineral resource properties, the relative significance of individual parameters on the ultimate development decision will vary from project to project. Sensitivity analysis in its formal sense is most frequently related to the economic analysis of a project particularly in conjunction with the ultimate development decision making process, and acknowledges the uncertainty of the actual values with their impact on the corporate decision making yardsticks. In many cases, this analysis merely adds more values to confuse the decision makers who may well opt for some subjective rationale to overcome the numeric confusion. However, sensitivity analysis should be used more frequently to exploit the development dollar to its maximum, THROUGHOUT the phases leading to the development decision. It is essential to identify the critical inputs to the various decision tiers in a project as early as possible and direct the funds to ensure that these parameters are determined as accurately as possible. Examples are used to illustrate the need for an even-handed quantification of the parameters which affect the outcome of decisions en route to the final one while minimising the risk in making an optimum assessment in relation to development funds Available.

Fosterville Gold Mine is an underground operation located approximately 20 km northeast of Bendigo and 170 km north of Melbourne. Fosterville is the most productive gold mine in Victoria, producing over 100 000 ounces of gold annually. Access to the underground is via two portals cut into previously mined open pits. Fosterville is 100 per cent owned and operated by Northgate Minerals, a gold and copper producer with mining operations, development projects and exploration properties in Canada and Australia. (Northgate Minerals Corporation, 2010).Underground operations commenced in 2006 with ore production focused on three orebodies – Phoenix, Ellesmere and Falcon. Primary ventilation to the existing operation is provided by wall mounted exhaust fans located underground. This system provides approximately 220 m3/s of primary ventilation to the operations with intake achieved through the portals. Exploration drilling during recent times has uncovered another lode, the Harrier orebody, located 2.2 km to the south of the existing workings. Due to the location of the new Harrier orebody, vent analysis revealed the requirement for a separate source of primary ventilation to service Harrier. Figure 1 shows a current underground long section and the location of Harrier in relation to the existing workings. A number of options were considered, including a parallel decline from one of the existing two portals, however, a 4 m diameter, 350 m deep surface ventilation shaft was selected as the most suitable and feasible option for the mine.In December 2009, geotechnical drilling commenced to determine the most suitable location for the shaft. Site locations were constrained by a number of factors including interaction with current and planned surface infrastructure as well as proximity to nearby community members at the southern end of the mining lease. Results from the geotechnical drilling indicated that the majority of the proposed shaft would be suitable for a 4 m raise bored shaft. However, the top 40 m of the proposed shaft were deemed unsuitable for raiseboring due to zones of weakness that would likely influence the stability of a 4 m diameter shaft (Robinson, 2010). Following independent geotechnical advice and input from experienced raiseboring contractors, it was decided to construct a 40 m presink prior to raiseboring activities.A crane mounted auger was chosen as the preferred method to construct the presink. This method differs substantially from traditional blind sinking methods which are highly labour intensive. The auger, or drill, is designed and built to be attached to a crane base using engineered pivoting cradles. The auger is suspended from the crane jib by pennant ropes attached to hydraulic rams. The auger applies rotation and axial loads to the drilling tools via a telescopic steel bar (Kelly Bar). Drill tools are attached to the bottom of the Kelly Bar and comprise an assortment of drilling buckets and reaming barrels. Drilling buckets cut in situ material and collect the spoil for removal and are used for the excavation of the ‘pilot hole’. Reaming barrels are used to expand the diameter of the excavation by directing cuttings into the pilot hole which are then removed by the drilling bucket. In June 2010, the presink was constructed utilising a crane mounted auger with support to the shaft walls applied via a remote fibrecrete unit. The excavation method involved cutting a series of smaller diameter holes (2.4 m wide) before reaming out to the final diameter (4.7 m wide) in 4 - 5 m vertical increments. Fibrecreting activities were carried out on the backshifts, to ensure the stability of the excavation and minimise interaction between the two units. The presink was completed on time and offered many advantages compared to traditional blind sinking methods, including safety, costs and timing. This paper will examine the benefits of this method as well as lessons learnt and future applications in the mining industry.

Classical electroslag remelting of consumable electrodes is a drop-by-drop melt feeding through a slag layer into a renewing molten metal bath, slowly solidifying into a homogeneous, dense, defectfree ingot in a copper water-cooled mould. The new look at the additive nature of the electroslag remelting (ESR) process in a protective atmosphere allowed us to formulate the principles of a comprehensive thermodynamic-based model that can predict dynamic changes in slag and metal composition at certain ingot remelting. The model considers drastically different slag-to-metal mass ratios at the beginning and end of remelting and predicts gas, slag and metal composition in a chain of thermodynamic subsystems. Despite consisting of calcium fluoride and stable oxides, the ESR slag can oxidise main and active elements from steel and alloys (primarily aluminium, titanium and silicon) due to chemical reactions between slag and metal. ESR is not an electrochemical process in its nature. However, slags are ionic melts and deviation in their composition causes a change in their properties, affecting both operation mode and ingot quality. Another important understanding derived from the modern metallurgy technological route is that the ability to refine metal from impurities is not a priority for the ESR because consumable electrode has already passed all stages of refining and deep degassing at ladle treatment that changes ESR slags engineering principles. The critical importance became slag’s ability to generate process heat and keep the melting composition in the metal bath unchanged (except for non-metallic inclusions assimilation). Slag engineering for ESR required a compromise between chemical inertness to a metal composition and desired physical properties deriving from technological reasons. The Directed Chemical Bonds Concept (DCBC) in a multicomponent oxide system was used to build predictive models of electric conductivity and the melting temperature of fluoride-oxide slag based on their chemical composition. Both models help to design a customised composition of effective slags for steel and alloy groups or individual grades, and they are significant steps in the development of a comprehensive model of electroslag remelting.

In seeking to improve the economic performance of mines, the management or human aspects are usually seen to be quite seperate from, and more significant than, the technical aspects. There are obvious aspects of industrial relations, man-management, skills training and supervision that are currently the focus of efforts to improve the productivity and quality of the mining process. However technology also has a lot to offer. Analysis of the costs involved suggests that innovations leading to improvement in the productivity of the excavation and transport of overburden and the recovery of coal (both in the mine and preperation plant) can lead to improvements in the economic performance of a mine that may outstrip the obvious non-technical or management opportunities for improvement. While there are some innovations currently being investigated within the industry that relate to the design of mining equipment, the type of machinery being used in open cut mines has not changed dramatically over the last twenty five years. It is also likely that mining equipment will remain essentially of the same form in the forseeable future. If significant improvements to mining performance are to be achieved other than by futher increases in the scale of machinery, then we need to seek ways to operate these same types of machines in a more productive and controlled manner. This paper discusses the identification of mining processes the improvement of which is likely to have a significant effect on mining costs and performance. Some areas of current research are discussed and potentially fruitful areas for future development are identified.

The movements of the major continental cratons and the distribution of the principal tectonostratigraphic terranes are reviewed in the Circum-Pacific region during Phanerozoic time. It is concluded that major periods of orogeny and consolidation of accreted terranes in the Circum-Pacific region is best correlated with periods of advance of cratonic blocks over the Pacific Ocean basin combined with relative convergent to transpressive motions between the cratons and the Pacific Ocean plates. Continental collisions and collision of terranes with continental margins has not been a significant geodynamic process in Circum-Pacific tectonic evolution. The permanency of the Pacific Ocean basin throughout 500 MA is remarkable. It appears no continental block or large continental fragment has ever entered or crossed the Pacific Ocean basin since early Paleozoic time. This area where no continent has entered for 500 MA is almost coincident with the present Pacific Ocean basin and seems associated with the 25 to 100 meter geoid high which dominates the present-day figure of the Earth.

India is well endowed with vast reserves of banded hematite ore, about 12 billion tonnes, estimated by some conventional methods. Various authors have assessed this huge reserve using some advanced geostatistical methods. A Banded Iron Formation (BIF) belt named the `Singhbhum-Keonjhar-Bonai' belt in India has been chosen as a case study. In this paper, the experiences of Chiria iron ore, in particular, have been described. This study will finally create a dynamic mineral inventory after standardising the geostatistical parameters which will help to cater for the needs of the stringent quality requirements of the Indian steel industries.
