The Ban Houayxai mine (BHX) is a relatively low-grade, low-cost, open pit gold-silver deposit in Laos operated by Phu Bia Mining, a subsidiary of PanAust. The ore production rate at BHX is 4.5 Mt/a, with direct tipping to a semi-autogenous grinding/ball mill circuit with a carbon-in-leach process plant. Approximately 100 000 oz of gold is produced per annum.The operation is located in mountainous terrain with minimal run-of-mine stockpiling. This results in limited capacity for blending from stockpile, with the mill instead reliant upon direct feed ex-pit. Since commissioning in 2012, the plant has seen significant variation in milling rates due to variability in the feed properties of the oxide, transition and primary ores. As part of an ongoing continuous improvement program, an integrated approach was initiated, focusing on maintaining and enhancing production in the future as the proportion of harder primary ore increases. This will specifically focus on direct blending from the loading face using the ore properties and blast fragmentation to maintain mill throughput.This approach was based on the concept of physical assets management, commencing with improving information and knowledge of the condition of the orebody through modelling the characteristics, variability and performance of the feed for processes relevant to throughput. These models are used to support both mine and process plant production planning.The key ore feed characteristics and parameters modelled for the life-of-mine are blastability index, powder factor, crushability or impact resistance and grindability. These predictive spatial models were based on the data from diamond drill holes used in resource definition and geotechnical drilling programs by integrating geotechnical, geological, geochemical and metallurgical data.At the early stages of implementation, the models are being utilised for ore blending decisions to provide guidance and support for budgeting, long-term mine planning, blast design for mill feed and providing the mill with an expectation of performance.CITATION:Jackson, J, Gaunt, J and Astorga, M, 2014. Mt Kasi in Fiji is a high sulphidation style of gold deposit exposed at a high crustal level. Individual alteration centres are localised at the intersection of cross structures within a through-going structural corridor, the Mt Kasi Fault System. A two stage alteration/ mineralisation model suggests that much of the high sulphidation alteration is derived from the initial rapidly moving gas-rich portion of the hydrothermal fluid. The gradual cooling and neut-ralisation of hot acid fluids by mixing with oxygenated ground waters forms the characteristic zoned alteration assem-blages which grade from cores of residual silica through silica-alunite to peripheral clays. The liquid-dominated phase of the hydrothermal fluid brecciates the competent, altered rocks and deposits sulphide mineralise-ation within the breccia matrix. High gold grades occur in the matrix-rich breccias and decline from the hydro-thermal fluid upflow to outflow zones.CSAMT (controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics) geophysics has been used to define the geometry of the alteration centres while strike slip movement on the major structures accounts for the dilational structural environment in which the ore hosting breccias form.

This paper summarises the lessons learned during a recent carbon reactivation kiln upgrade project at the Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt. The kiln is being replaced to ensure that the plant achieves full value from the current throughput expansion from 5 to 10 Mt/a.The suitability of the original engineering design criteria for kiln selection and the adequacy of the original kiln are reviewed in the light of the carbon chemistry, operating experience and a site inspection of the kiln. Particular aspects of the reactivation facility are discussed including: predrying, preheating, feeding, gas seals, kiln heat transfer, steam injection, counter-current sweep gas flow, carbon cooling, fines minimisation and removal.Design criteria for a carbon predryer, reactivation kiln and cooler combination for carbon heavily fouled by high molecular weight frothers and collectors are discussed and the abridged Ausenco datasheet for the combination is presented.Responses to a request for a budget price sent to most of the worldÆs suppliers of carbon regeneration kilns are summarised.CITATION:Claflin, J K, La Brooy, S R J and Preedy, D, 2013. Among countries afflicted with insLantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, Australia is noteworthy because of lesser disturbances of the seams and of the occurrence of CO2 in the seam gas from place to place. Research sLarted with the 1954 occurrences at Collinsville and Metropolitan Collieries leading to early publications reviewing the problem, describing occurrences and assessing variations in proneness factors in the two affected coal basins.The basic requirements for proneness include coals of high gas sorptive capacity, high ground stress, use of a mining method which provides higher stress concentrations and limits emission of seam gas, including high rates of advance. With CO2 in the seam gas proneness is greater.The mechanism is complex and not fully understood, but involves the coal, the roof, the floor, the gas, the mine opening, the ventilation, the kind of work and the rate of work. Geological disturbances such as faults and dykes increase proneness and tend to localise occurrences. On-occurrence of outbursts in some mines is difficult to explain.Outbursts are seen as a continuing threat to modem deep Australian mining of high rank coal.The simplest contributory factor to reduce is gassiness - despite the low permeability of outbursting coals - and present practices are showing promise. The greatest challenges for the future are partial degasification to below a known threshold figure and confirmation that this reduction is achieved and identification of anomalous geological structures ahead, the most likely locations for instantaneous outbursts to occur. The advances made to date give promise of a future with reducing experiences of uncontrolled instantaneous outbursts. For the Bulli seam particularly, working to achieve prediction and prevention is most urgent.

British Coal's Selby Complex is the newest producing mine in the United Kingdom. The reasons behind its origins, planning and design are explained. Some detail is given of equipment used, with the emphasis being placed on the unique features of its layout. The entire project has been planned and constructed over many years and the design has consequently changed, principally in response to the geology of the coalfield and improving technology. In spite of many totally unexpected difficulties, the mine, which is not yet in full production, has the highest productivity in the United Kingdom.

The article, as written, represents a short account of the treatment of the base bullion from the Broken Hill ores, as carried on at Port Pirie, for the recovery of lead, silver, and gold, and for the treatment of by-products. Appended is a short description of the chief facilities of plant which have been adopted to overcome the main difficulties in the refining of lead the Howard press and stirrer. The article is within the limit prescribed by the regulation for the prize offered by the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, comprising 30 pages, containing an average of about 200 words per page, exclusive of analyses, photographs, and sketches.The writer desires to thank those to whom he is indebted for their- kindness in affording him every facility possible to obtain the information which he required for the success of such a paper-viz., Messrs. Robertson, Leavens, and Gronow, of the Broken Hill Propritary Co. Limited, at Port Pirie, and Mr. Crowther, of the Adelaide School of Mines, to whom he is indebted for photographs. The difficulty of obtaining fair samples of gold drosses, and the inability to obtain particulars of fuel consumptions, prevents the paper from being as complete as one would wish. The limited length precludes detail, except in more important parts.

The eastern third of Australia contains an unrivalled Phanerozoic rock record generated by the regional interaction of Gondwanaland with the Pacific and by the global effect of the 400 m.y. Pangaea - Panthalassa cycle. Between the latest Proterozoic (600 Ma) breakup of Proto-Pangaea and the mid-Carboniferous coalescence of the dispersed continents in Pangaea, the Lachlan and Thomson Foldbelts accreted to the craton by Mariana-type (backarc basin) and Chilean-type (continental margin) subduction from eastward jumps of the Palaeo- Pacific rim. Further jumps of the rim of the Permian and Mesozoic Pacific, now expanded to Panthalassa, accreted the New England Foldbelt to the craton. An Early Permian rift basin was succeeded by a Late Permian to mid-Triassic foreland basin which extended between the craton and the foldbelt behind the 10000 km Panthalassan rim, from the Bowen Basin of Queensland to South America, and was host to the productive coal measures of eastern Australia, as the succeeding Jurassic and Early Cretaceous foreland and epicratonic basins included the coal measures, hydrocarbon reservoirs, and aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin. The magmatic arc on the Australian margin ended after the mid-Cretaceous uplift along the Queensland coast that initiated southwestward drainage from the high Pacific rim. The Chilean-type subduction that had prevailed since the Devonian was superseded shortly afterwards by Mariana-type subduction with the successive generation of the back-arc basins of the Tasman Sea, Coral Sea, and other southwest Pacific basins by the migration of the island arc to its present position 2500 km eastward of Australia.

The Fitzpatrick Orebody is a three and a half million tonne fault bounded portion of the early-middle Proterozoic Broken Hill Orebody.The Fitzpatrick Orebody was discovered in 1975 by diamond drilling from the 36 Level Exploratory Drive. This followed persistent geologically oriented exploration and a courageous decision by mine management to deepen No. 3 Shaft to provide exploratory development across the Globe Vauxhall Shear and allow effective drilling of the target area.The stratiforrn oebody consists of three lenses, the lead rich No. 2 and 3 Lenses and smaller zinc lode. They represent a down plunge extension and boudinaged, fault-bounded portion of the main Broken Hill ore lenses. The surrounding host rocks are extensively faulted and jointed due to complex history of movement on the bounding shears. This results in extremely poor ground conditions during mining. The ore was delineated for mining development using three dimensional fan drilling from exploratory and hanging wall drive drill sites.

Fine feed fractions in the size range from 1 to 40 ¦m of materials with different hardness as limestone and silicon carbide have been stressed in two different devices. A tungsten-carbide-blodc allows a single stressing with a pressure up to 2000 MPa and a 4-piston-block enables a multiple stressing procedure in which the material bed is stressed in alternating directions with a pressure up to 700 MPa. The experiments show energy absorption as the major factor for the interparticle breakage of hard material, like quartz, zircon silicate, silicon carbide and smelted oonindum, pressure, however, does not influence the results within the investigated range from 100 to 700 MPa and even up to 2000 MPa for corundum. But the breakage of the middle-hard limestone depends on the pressure so far as more fineness can be produced if the same energy is introduced at a lower pressure level. The creation of very fine and microfine fragments decreases strongly with increasing hardness of the feed materiaL The energy consumption for producing microfine material with a multiple stressing procedure on a particle bed is much lower than that one of a usual milling process. But this procedure needs a classification with a seperation cut at a couple of microns, which is not easy to accomplish.

Since the discovery of coal of the Southern coalfield (Illawarra 1797, Burragorang 1806) coal mining has grown progressively to the thriving industry of today. Early shallow escarpment mining required no serious access development, but with extension of mining to further and deeper areas, sinking became necess- ary. Now, with 17 major shafts and 7 decline drifts in current use, new mining activities involve several current sinking and drifting projects, with more in prospect. Conventional sinking and drifting, using blasting and mucking techniques proven in recent years are normally in use, with attempts, recent and current to accelerate advances by boring techniques. With export and to less extent local market unpredictability, it is vital to produce mine establishment times to allow advantage to be taken of market upswings and there is great need for research and improvement of mine access construction as the major aspect of establish- ment.

Since the 1950's drilling has been rapidly mechanised. First from hand held drills with air legs to pneumatic jumbos, then to more effective hydraulic jumbos. Development of underground drilling equipment naturally could not have stopped here. Hydraulic drilling saw an improvement in drilling capacity and efficiency after the introduction of second generation drifters in the early 1980's. Also in the early 1980's a few equipment suppliers started to study how to improve the efficiency in operating the rigs. The first computerised rigs for tunnelling were delivered to work sites in mid 1980's. At the same time a few computerised longhole drills started drilling in mines.

Dynamic simulation (discrete event simulation) is the preferred methodology to evaluate the impact of dynamic aspects of processing plants on the overall plant capacity. This tool can be used to: identify bottlenecks in the plant,justify upgrade and expansion projects by evaluating their impact, oroptimise maintenance and operating practices without disrupting the operation. Iron Ore Company of Canada's (IOC) pelletising plant is a complex operation because of multiple products, varying equipment capacity and shifting bottlenecks. Furthermore, with extensive capital requirements for projects and long lead times, a high level of confidence in project outcome is required. Therefore, a model of IOC's pelletising plant in Labrador City was constructed in 2007 by a joint IOC and Hatch team. The model includes both operational and metallurgical aspects in order to better capture the complexity of IOC operation. In this paper, the justification, boundaries, and functionality of the model are described. A comparison of simulation results to historical plant operation is given. It is observed that projects have interactions and that the benefits of combined projects are not equal to the combined benefits of the individual projects. Projects can have synergies that result in greater benefits when combined or can have overlapping benefits that result in lower benefits when combined. The power of the proposed modeling exercise lies in the ability to assess the impact of projects on overall performance.

The sustainable management of surface water associated with coal mining and coal seam gas projects is a considerable factor affecting the global competitiveness of these resource companies operating in Australia. Management of surface water can be costly, but effective water management and hence environmental stewardship enhances corporate social responsibility and the social license to operate. The surface water issues for the two industries are comparable, yet there is currently a lack of alignment between how Queensland, where the majority of AustraliaÆs coal seam gas projects are located, manages and regulates water on coal mine projects and coal seam gas projects.This paper provides a high level comparison of Queensland legislation and highlights the lack of alignment of this legislation regarding surface water management in these two industries. Through a case study, it looks at the surface water management process at a coal mine site based on the current legislation and principals of surface water management. QueenslandÆs lack of alignment in legislation regarding surface water management in these industries is understandable given the different development paths and time scales of the two industries. The coal mining industry has developed over a long period of time and the legislation has progressed in parallel, whereas, the coal seam gas industry is relatively new in Australia and the legislation has had to advance quickly. The lack of alignment between management of surface water for the two industries creates confusion among stakeholders and this adds complexity and additional transaction costs during the exploration, permitting and operational phases of projects, including landowners who may be affected.CITATION:Bennett, C, Coffison, E and Gibbs, M, 2013. The New Zealand Minerals Industry Association was incorporated as the NZ Mineral Exploration Association in 1982, with a membership that consisted of the gold exploration companies then active in New Zealand . As its membership broadened, it changed its name to the Mining and Exploration Association in 1994, and more recently the Minerals Industry Association. It is a non-profit-making incorporated society relying on voluntary membership, and is not funded by industry levies.   It has employed a full time executive director since 1988 when Robyn Ross was appointed, followed by John Pfahlert (1991 - 1996) and now with Doug Gordon managing the Association.   The Association is one of a number of organisations that represent the mining industry in New Zealand. Others include the Coal Association of NZ (CANZ), the Aggregate and Quarry Association (AQA), The West Coast Commercial Gold Miners Association and Minerals West Coast.   NZMIA membership comprises the main exploration and mining companies that account for over 80 per cent of New Zealand Æs mine output, and nearly all of its exploration investment. Its membership has expanded from gold exploration to encompass exploration and mining companies active in coal, gold, aggregates and industrial minerals.   The Association has developed a National Minerals Strategy that determines its priorities, implemented via a Minerals Industry Advisory Committee. This group was established six years ago to advise the Associate Minister of Energy on issues relating to the long term development of the minerals sector in New Zealand.

Ballarat Goldfields Limited is currently re-opening the old workings of the East Ballarat Goldfield which contain an estimated 1800 ML of groundwater. The disposal of this 'minewater' was of concern: the minewater is of moderate salinity; increased salinity levels have interfered with agriculture and water use at a number of locations downstream from Ballarat. Extensive numerical studies indicated that treated minewater could be discharged into the Ballarat Creek system for dilution by sewage effluent and by surface runoff after rainfall events. An automatic real-time salinity management system has been developed to enable the disposal of saline minewater in this fashion. A desk top computer operates the system: discharge and salinity readings are taken automatically each hour and filed away; the maximum allowable rate of discharge of treated minewater is calculated; pumps are switched on and off. The system readily enables daily, weekly and monthly data reports together with floppy disks of 'raw' data to be prepared in formats suitable for direct submission to the Victorian Environmental Protection Authority.

The concept of using specially designed slot blasts to mine through stress abutments that intersect faults, while controlling fault-slip seismicity, has come of age at Mt Charlotte Mine. Due to the high and adverse stress field and the presence of major faults, the mine is vulnerable to significant fault-slip seismicity. As mining proceeded, advancing stress abutments around various mined areas encroached on several major subvertical faults. If the sequence formed a diminishing pillar between stope and fault, the removal or failure of that pillar daylighted the fault, and often resulted in significant fault-slip seismicity. A new strategy called ‘Tight Slot Blasting’ (TSB) was developed to restrain or dampen this style of fault-slip movement. The TSB has geometric similarities to a conventional cut-off slot used to create stress shadows, but its function is different. Its objective is to trigger and control a sudden shift of the stress state on a fault from an initial stable state, through an unstable transition, to a second stable state. A TSB firing advances a long tall narrow slot through a stressed abutment between a stope void and a nearby fault, using a rapid blast with a low swell ratio, so that the slot substantially and rapidly fills with blasted rock fragments. During the blast process, the stressed rock is rapidly removed and transformed into the fragmented rock fill in the slot. The strategy deliberately allows a fault-slip episode to manifest at a chosen time and place. The tight-packed broken rock in the slot performs an essential shock-absorbing function by controlling the slip amount and rate on the fault, while at the same time the fill becomes compacted by the movement. This controls the dissipation of fault-slip energy, and greatly reduces the seismic response in time and space. A small closure across the slot occurs, with consequent relaxation and destressing of the adjacent rock mass. Stress monitoring data shows that slot creation lowers the abutment stress in the nearby rock mass, while the newly placed fragmented rock fill acts as a shock absorber, providing considerable resistance to substantial fault-slip movement that otherwise could deliver a significant seismic event. First used in 2007, the strategy has been refined to become a routine specialised practice for management of seismically hazardous situations at Mt Charlotte, with 12 successful TSBs conducted to date. Despite mining through multiple high stress abutments, seismic reactions have not exceeded ML 2.1 with any TSB firing, all remaining below the site tolerable maximum of ML 2.3. This paper presents an overview of the strategy, and five case examples of the strategy in critical stressed areas in July 2016, Sept 2017, Dec 2017 and two in Oct 2020. The strategy has successfully managed the seismicity and is expected to remain an essential part of the seismic management plan at Mt Charlotte Mine.

A sulfide ion selective electrode was used to control sulfidiser addition in the flotation testing of a synthetic and a naturally occurring ore containing malachite in order to compare the behaviour of sodium sulfide and calcium polysulfide. Both slug and controlled potential sulfidisation methods of addition were used. Under defined optimum CPS conditions, calcium polysulfide was a more effective sulfidising agent than sodium sulfide on the basis of both capital and operating costs. Surface and solution studies were used to compare the mechanism of each sulfidiser. For calcium polysulfide, XPS showed that polysulfide ions are adsorbed, whereas for sodium sulfide it is the hydrosulfide ions that are adsorbed on the mineral surface. For calcium polysulfide, the CuSx layer was believed to form on the malachite surface, which promoted the flotation of the malachite, by xanthate. Studies of surface morphology of the sulfidised malachite showed that a fairly uniform sulfidised layer is formed with both reagents. The use of sodium sulfide resulted in a thinner initial sulfidised layer compared to polysulfide at equivalent initial sulfur concentration.

Traditional method of explicitly defining three-dimensional (3D) ore-waste and geological boundaries relies heavily on a time-consuming process of manual digitisation. This method of modelling can be best described as surface modelling, as complex surface geometry is built up by digitising points that lie on the surface. With the advent of fast 3D interpolation methods, however, construction of geological surfaces using volume functions is now a practical alternative to explicit modelling of surfaces. Unlike explicit modelling, surfaces contained in volume functions are not explicitly defined or digitised. Instead the existence of surfaces in the volume function is implicit, thus the process of modelling surfaces from volume function is called æimplicit modellingÆ. Based on recent advances in fast scattered data interpolation methods, implicit modelling first defines a continuous three-dimensional function that describes the grade or rock distribution. This volumetric function is interrogated for a grade value, or a geological surface, thus allowing the extraction of the 3D object to be automated and eliminating the need to manually digitise surfaces. Since the function is continuous throughout space and does not depend on a mesh or grid for its definition, the extracted geological or grade wireframes can be constructed at any desired resolution in the specific volume of interest. The volume modelling method can work on scattered drillhole data of any data density, including processing combined information from dense grade control data as well as sparse resource drilling. It offers distinct advantages over surface modelling, including: being able to wireframe geological objects that may take days to digitise in tens of minutes; substantial improvement in modelling accuracy; and the ability to generate conditional models rapidly allowing mining risks inherent in geological modelling to be examined.

The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.
