The gravimetric integral Knudsen effusion method was used to measure cadmium activity values in binary liquid In-Cd alloys in the range 523 to 573 K. The activity measurements together with other studies from the literature indicate that special bonding conditions exist in the melts near a composition corresponding to InCd3. Sound velocities in In-Cd melts were also measured using a precision pulse-echo over- lap method in the range 404 to 953 K. The frac- tional deviation of experimental and ideal isentropic compressibilities at 623K shows a functional dependence on composition with a pronounced maximum near the composition 75 at.%.

Recent major urban trunk sewer infrastructure projects in Melbourne have involved construction of nearly 10 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels in a range of geological conditions varying from soft alluvial soils to hard volcanic rock. To provide both construction and permanent access to the new trunk sewer network, a total of 17 shafts between 5 m and 13 m in diameter, and up to 64 m in depth have been constructed. This paper describes the design and construction of the temporary shaft support systems for the shafts.The range and variability of geological conditions at each shaft site required the adoption of the following shaft support systems across the projects – jet grouting, sheet piles, diaphragm wall, secant pile, contiguous pile, reinforced shotcrete rings and rock bolts.Groundwater control, settlement, TBM launch and reception chambers at the shaft base, chambers and TBM launches at mid-depth of shafts, connection shafts between new and existing sewers and bypass pumping shafts are among the challenges that have been met.This paper reports on the some of the challenges involved and experience gained in developing design and construction solutions for large diameter shafts that are excavated within varying geology in Melbourne over the past three years.

The detailed mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat was first studied in 1942 (Edwards, 1943).At that time the workings did not extend far below the 750ft. level. Since then development has been extended to the 1,390ft. level, and -at the request of the management of Lake George Mines Ltd., an examination of the ore from the deeper levels has been made as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization.This account is. based on that examination (Mineragraphic Rept. No. ,537, C.S.I.R.O.)GENERAL GEOLOGYThe geology of the Lake George Mines has been described briefly in The Geology of Australian Ore Deposits (1953), and in much greater detail in an unpublished report by K. Glasson (1952). The area consists of fossiliferous Upper Ordovician sediments overlain by volcanics (Kohinoor VoJcanics), and by fossiliferous Silurian sediments. The volcanies comprise a series of· flows ranging in' composition from dacite to rhyolite, with interbedded tuft's and shale lenses.The region has been strongly folded. The regional strike is from 340° to 355°, and dips are from 75°W. to 75°E, A major syncline, pitching 200 N., occupies the centre of the area. The Kohinoor Volcanic'l outcrop as two bands which represent the east and west limbs of this syncline.The Volcanks in the western limb, with whIch the orebodies are associated, are more strongly sheared than those in the eastern limb.

Contour blasting is commonly performed by employing linear charges decoupled from the boreholes. This method is common in surface and underground excavations, either for civil or mining purposes. To achieve the best results in terms of rock breakage and respect of the excavation profile, blasting theory suggests that charges should be inserted coaxial to the holes to grant uniform distribution of the explosive energy, therefore obtaining a uniform radius of damage. Nonetheless, due to readiness of operations or lack of availability of specific products on the market, non-coaxial charges are often employed in blasting practice. Non-coaxial charging methods include the employ of high-power detonating cord (40 to 100 g/m), low-power detonating cord connecting small-diameter cartridges (commonly 10 g/m detonating cord priming 1” cartridges) or string loading (a thin layer of bulk emulsion pumped with controlled flow and controlled extraction of the injecting rod). This research focuses on evaluating the effects of the first two charging methods on the quality of final walls in open pit and underground operations. Different drilling geometries and charging configurations were applied to both quarrying and tunnelling blasts. The half-cast factor, the overbreak and the underbreak were evaluated as control indicators. Rock quality designation and rock mass rating were used to classify the rock mass. The research was aimed to push contour blasts to their limits, observing for which geometry and charge configuration the blast lost its design threshold with respect to the final wall for every given rock mass. Results show the operational limits of non-coaxial charges encountered in the rock masses object of this study. In good-quality rock, smooth blasting with decoupled linear charge of 40 g/m can be extended to a spacing S = 22Øf with little or no detectable drawbacks in terms of final wall quality, in contrast with theoretical formulae for the determination of the radius of damage. On the other hand, when the rock is poor, any quality of the final wall is hardly achieved at all, in spite of any care in the details of execution of smooth blasting. Data is the most valuable commodity in the information age. The use of data enables productivity, opportunity, and safety in various sectors and industries. In the late 1950s, Alan Turing coined the term artificial intelligence (AI) to describe the ability of computing machines to think and behave like humans through simplified reasoning and logic (Turing, 1950). This concept of mimicking human behaviour is the building block of machine learning algorithms used in most AI software. The ‘learning’ aspect in machine learning requires data, that is, information on the environment or the objective, to be modelled or predicted using AI. An AI-enabled system aims to predict the unknown faster and intuitively. Intuition in software algorithms can be described as probabilistic, learned through the data that the AI system is trained on; indeed, the AI software cannot predict the future, but it can provide the likelihood of an event/action occurring, thereby enabling decisions or responses to prevent it or take action. Just as various industries have adopted AI as the tool of choice to seek new opportunities (examples: medical research, self-driving cars, financial modelling), the mining industry, too, has been receptive to embracing AI for problem-solving and maximising the value of its business.

The Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) (WHS Act; DMIRS, 2020) and associated Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 (WA) (WHS Regulations; DMIRS, 2022), supporting guidance materials and other laws, such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (SD Act), have imposed new duties on every person or business conducting an undertaking (PCBU) in Western Australia, including those operating in the mining industry. These laws and associated guidance materials combine to require owners, operators and contractors to discharge positive duties and better report and manage psychosocial hazards in the workplace. For mine operators, there is a positive duty to not only identify and eliminate hazards relating to psychological harm, sexual harassment and gendered violence at work, but to also report incidents to the safety regulator that could result in serious harm, even while internal and police investigations are ongoing. Traditional mines safety teams are navigating the evolving frontier of psychological and gendered safety as the duties relating to psychosocial safety and sexual harassment at work continue to expand. This paper will review the legal obligations on PCBUs to conduct internal investigations into critical psychosocial incidents and gendered violence on mines, whilst balancing the demands and sensitivities of investigations by the safety regulator and police. There are emerging approaches to safety investigations that can aid PCBUs in managing their investigations of psychosocial incidents and gendered violence, including trauma-informed investigation techniques, collaboration with psychological experts and the use of limited legal privilege. Well managed and sensitive investigations can foster trust amongst workers, result in improved incident reporting by workers and lead to enhanced safety outcomes for the resources industry whilst preserving the legal positions of involved PCBUs. Specifically traversing the new duty to consult, cooperate and coordinate, this practical session will arm mine managers, safety professionals and human resources professionals, from mine operators and mining contractors alike, with tools and processes to bring to safety investigations, particularly on residential mine sites.

The Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) was established by mining companies in 2006 to influence manufacturer's equipment design through a process of engagement. 2010 EMESRT member companies include Anglo American, Barrick, BHP Billiton, Centennial Coal, Collahausi, Newcrest, Newmont, Rio Tinto, Vale and Xstrata.Driven by a persistent need for retrofits to new equipment, such as haul trucks, EMESRT initially engaged with Surface Equipment Manufacturers including Caterpillar, Komatsu, Leibherr, Hitachi, Le Tourneau and Terex. These OEMs responded positively to the EMESRT initiative, welcoming the opportunity for dialogue with an aligned industry regarding human factors issues related to equipment design, rather than needing to respond to the disparate range of demands for design modifications previously received from individual customers. This engagement process is about making global sustained changes within the OEM organisations and within the mining companies. It is a very international exercise. For example, over two weeks in September 2010, a total of 21 different miners from ten different companies travelled from Australia, South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Singapore and the United States to engage with OEM counterparts who assembled from the United States, Japan, France, Sweden, Finland and Germany. EMESRT Surface Group representatives completed a whirlwind tour of the major North American manufacturers of mining equipment. Starting in Dallas (Atlas Copco, LeTourneau), this tour passed through Gainesville (Sandvik), Newport News (Liebherr), Guelph - Ontario (Hitachi) and Milwaukee (P&H Mining/Joy Global; Bucyrus), before winding up in Peoria, Illinois (Komatsu, Caterpillar). Over nine meetings, this group engaged with 129 individuals from nine OEMs. The EMESRT group welcomed miners from four non-member companies to come along for the meetings. These companies are Syncrude Canada Ltd, the Kearl Oil Sands Project - Imperial Oil (ESSO), Suncor Energy Ltd and Teck Resources Ltd.Other mining industry sectors have now expanded the EMESRT scope from surface mining to include exploration and underground mining equipment. In 2009, EMESRT was organised into four Technical Groups, consisting of EMESRT member company representatives, to focus on engagement with OEMs of surface, underground coal and soft rock, underground hard rock, and exploration drilling equipment. An advisory group has been formed to coordinate activities between all workgroups and provide strategic direction and cohesion between all activities. The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (UQ-SMI) facilitates and coordinates all EMESRT activities on behalf of member companies. Building on successes with individual Surface Mining OEMs, EMESRT now aims to help OEMs in their transition to a sustainable design process that will incorporate and address specific design philosophies at the concept phase of design, so that significant improvements can be made up front for little cost within the overall budget. EMESRT members plan to educate all stakeholders, internally, within their own companies, and externally, by addressing industry associations, regulators and other end users about new ways of evaluating equipment design based on EMESRT purchasing specifications. This presentation will outline the EMESRT approach and report on progress in 2010.

Even though most major operating companies in the minerals industry have Board-level endorsed sustainability principles and objectives, design engineers typically have no mechanism that allows them to implement those objectives in their work. In addition, the existing project management systems do not readily deliver the innovative solutions needed to address key sustainability issues, such as those related to significantly reduced carbon emissions, minimal environmental impacts, and maintaining the societal ‘licence to operate’. SUSOP® (SUStainable OPerations) is an approach for the integration of sustainable development principles into the design of mineral processes, which has been developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP). Somewhat analogous to the well entrenched HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies, SUSOP® is a holistic, systematic and rigorous mechanism for identifying and assessing sustainability opportunities and risks at each stage of project development - from corporate planning, through design and operation, to decommissioning and rehabilitation – without compromising financial rigour. SUSOP® was developed, tested and enhanced through its application to real case studies in the minerals industry. This development path provided significant insights into the process of identifying and evaluating opportunities for improving an operation’s contribution to sustainability and its long-term business case.This paper will discuss the need for a methodical approach for integrating sustainability principles into mineral processing plant design, present the key elements of SUSOP®, and outline its development path through real case studies. In addition, the reasons why such an approach will have growing importance into the future will be raised.

Project Controls cost and scheduling systems provide the Leaders with timely information on which to base their decisions.The Client (Owner) will invest up to three per cent of the project cost on Project Controls. To ensure that this investment is effective, the Owner or Manager must have a clear understanding of the information required from the Project controls systems. If appointing a single Managing Contractor, the Owner or Manager must stipulate what is and what is not required from the Project Controls Systems. There are numerous computer programs available for scheduling and cost control and it is important to select systems which best serve the Owner's needs.

In the past two and a half years, over 40 000 metalliferous mining and related services personnel have been trained through an Australian Generic Safety Induction system. This is almost half of AustraliaÆs metalliferous mining related workforce. This remarkable industry acceptance and delivery of safety courses is supported by Acacia Resources, Great Central Mines, Homestake, Newcrest Mining and WMC Resources, amongst hundreds of other mining, exploration and major contracting and services companies. MARCSTA; the Mining and Resources Contractors Safety Training Association (a pro-active not-for-profit self-help group of 24 major contracting companies) developed this generic safety induction. MARCSTA set out to find the æcommon groundÆ necessary to help address the evident safety problems and cost of re-training that were plaguing development of an internationally competitive and productive export industry. The incredible expansion of Australian mining during the decade fuelled a need for out-sourcing, resulting in much larger numbers of contractors on-site. At the same time, changes within Australian legislation, community expectations and the development of huge fly-in/fly-out operations and widespread skills shortages led to a rapid labour turnover and a higher paid workforce. Many Australian mining houses also ran international operations, particularly in South East Asia and head hunted people across the world. The skill levels fluctuated and fell at some local operations. Employers could no longer rely on systematic in-house training of permanent employees to improve safety and productivity as workers could and often did move on. Serious discrepancies in both quality and quantity of safety induction training and work practices occurred. Repetitive, boring and ineffective safety training became an embarrassing and costly burden for companies and workers alike. Then a spate of mining deaths sparked highly publicity, workforce concern and a demand for improvement from government, unions and corporate stakeholders. MARCSTA recognised it had to develop a high-quality safety-training program to satisfy the needs of all employers and be acceptable to others within the industry. This induction system had to be flexible enough to meet differences in legislation between states and industry sectors and be portable to enable cost and time savings for the new transient workforce. Changes in the last two years as a result of evaluating and incorporating various Taskforce inquiries into underground mining fatalities later led to the development of the MARCSTA Underground Safety Induction. This logical development added to the run away success of MARCSTAÆs General Safety Induction and was seen to be essential for many surface mines that were planning to develop underground operations. There are many lessons that MARCSTA learnt during its development that Pacific and South East Asian mining operations can benefit from. The most important of these are the support of stakeholders within industry and the recognition of higher safety and health expectations from workers and government. This goes hand-in-hand with the productivity and return on investment expectations of companies and their shareholders.

The influence of feed size and pulp density on the specific rate ofbreakage of quartz was investigated. Plots of log fraction of feedremaining within the feed size interval against grinding time allowed the application of the first order grinding model to be examined. Substantial non-linearities were observed for all feed sizes due to environmental and material factors. For feed sizes above 1.3 mm, the specific rate of quartz breakage was higher with rod milling than ball milling, but below this size the reverse was true. Material that remained in the feed size interval after the initial grinding broke more slowly in subsequent grinding than the original feed material. Grinding media and time as well as feed size influenced the effects of pulp density on grinding. More dilute pulps (eg 50 per cent solids density by weight) were favoured for higher rates of breakage in rod milling but for ball milling, the optimum pulp density appeared to be 60 to 70 per cent solids by weight.

Mineragraphy is a coined term to signify the field of microscopic investigation of ore minerals. The term is not euphonius and is sometimes regarded as superfluous because the subject is no more than an enlargement of the scope of petrology. In the past the practical field of petrology has been largely limited by the instruments which were designed for the study of rocks and' the microscopical properties of the transparent minerals. The addition of mineragraphy has been brought about by the use of the reflecting microscope and a totally different technique.The use of the petrological microscope, as it has been employed in the training oi geologists and mining engineers for nearly half a century, has been justified many times, not only in its application to general geological problems, but also in the more restricted field of the exploration and examination of ore deposits. It provides information of the gangue minerals and rocks associated with an ore body which is of great value in some mining fields. In cases where ore deposits occur selectively in certain favourable types of rock, the recognition and delineation of these rock types is a useful guide in prospecting. The Boulder Belt at Kalgoorlie forms one of the most striking examples in Australia where important significance is attached to different rock types, and the petrological microscope is essential to their elucidation.

Qualitative risk assessment methods are not well suited to considering complex systems and potential interactions of new technology. As part of supporting tier one mining organisations and international industry groups, the author and colleagues have innovated processes to help provide better solutions to sites/companies considering a move to implementing proximity detection and collision avoidance systems. The process identifies required operating states for the system. By applying a combination of research and team-based analyses, a rigorous identification of credible failure modes which could cause these states to be lost, is identified. Finally, required business inputs, expressed in practical terms are distilled from regulator, industry, organisation and site in a way which clearly addresses the failure modes and so retain the required operating states. These business inputs identify improvements for site arrangements (EMESRT levels 1 to 7) before identifying functional requirements for technological collision avoidance solutions (levels 8 for advisory and 9 for autonomous). The paper presents a case study synthesised from multiple sites analyses and will provide guidance on where to find additional resources to assist in making the best possible transition to better equipment and road network solutions.

In this paper it is argued that we are entering a new mining era, based on considerably more challenging orebodies as we rapidly expand minerals production by exploiting previously uneconomic deposits. Rapidly increasing production costs cannot be sustained by continually increasing commodity prices, as illustrated by the recent downturn in the industry.Driven by reduction in grade, requiring the processing of 50 to 100 per cent more ore to recover the same amount of metal, often accompanied by finer grain structure - necessitating a finer product size and more challenging recovery - the productivity of the mining industry is dropping in real terms. The author suggests that tweaking current technologies and relying on economies of scale will not turn the industry around, but rather a switch to considerably more efficient processing is required.It is imperative to utilise the properties of the orebody, especially in terms of variability, in revolutionising our processing techniques. Our new mantra may be æselective mass mining with flexible processingÆ. This paper explores how this may be implemented using current technology and equipment in order to change the cost profile of the new mining industry. Orebody knowledge, based on the underlying process drivers, rather than proxies, is required. These properties and their variability will need to be propagated into the orebody through utilising the geological data rather than smoothing block averages, which destroys information on variability.Novel flexible circuit designs are presented that can respond to a wide variability in ore properties and throughput requirements in order to slash processing costs and energy utilisation, while enhancing overall recovery. The success of these circuits will be based on an ability to predict at both design stage and in everyday processing the variable ore properties, which is dependent upon reliable orebody knowledge that caries variability and underlying processing properties.CITATION:Powell, M S, 2013. Small orogenic gold deposits have the same deposit-scale geological and geochemical features as those that characterise giant orogenic gold systems (>16 Moz Au). Therefore, a broader-scale approach is needed to identify the critical controls on giant deposits and their disproportionate distribution throughout time and space. Ages of giant gold systems cluster around well-defined periods of lithospheric growth at continental margins, and it is orogen-scale processes during these Late Archaean, Early Proterozoic and Phanerozoic times that determine gold endowment of a province.   A critical factor for giant orogenic gold provinces appears to be asthenospheric upwelling at the time of gold mineralisation to most effectively transfer the thermal energy required to initiate and sustain high hydrothermal fluid flux. The extent of this fluid flux should be related to thickness of the lithosphere beneath a province at the time of gold mineralisation, such that giant gold deposits are much more likely to develop in orogens with oceanic or thinned continental lithosphere. A proxy for the latter is likely to be a short premineralisation crustal history such that thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle was not developed. Conversely, orogens with protracted premineralisation crustal histories are more likely to have a thick subcontinental lithospheric mantle, which is difficult to delaminate and, hence, such provinces will normally be poorly endowed. The nature of the lithosphere also influences the intrinsic gold concentrations of potential source rocks, with back-arc basalts, transitional basalts and basanites enriched in gold relative to other rock sequences. Thus, segments of orogens with thin lithosphere may be defined by conjunction of giant-scale fluid flux through gold-enriched sequences.   Although the nature of the lithosphere plays the crucial role in dictating which orogenic gold provinces will contain one or more giant deposits, the precise siting of those giants depends on the critical conjunction of a number of province-scale factors that control fluid conduits, traps, and seals in tectonically and lithospherically suitable terranes within accretionary orogens.

In August, 1975, North Broken Hill Limited announced that an intersection of 37.3 m of high grade lead-silver-zinc mineralisation, assaying 26.2 per cent Pb, 495 g/tonne Ag and 21.2 per cent Zn had been obtained at its Mine at Broken Hill, 520 m north-east of its No. 3 Shaft and slightly below the No. 36 level (1581 m). Subsequent drilling confirmed the presence of the extension of the Broken Hill Orebody on the north-western side of the Globe Vauxhall Retrograde Shear Zone and defined 1.8 million tonnes of high grade mineralisation. The area containing this mineralisation was subsequently named the Fitzpatrick Area in tribute to the late Mr. W.E. Fitzpatrick a former Member of the the Board and Manager of the Ccnpany's Broken Hill operations. This paper describes in brief the exploration programme leading up to the discovery, the general geology of the area and the proposed future exploration progranme for further extensions of the orebody within the mining leases of North Broken Hill Limited.

Following a decline in direct and indirect employment in the minerals industry between 2000 and 2003, the situation reversed in 2004 and employment rose by 12 per cent. Furthermore, there are forecasts of continuing employment growth in the minerals industry in the immediate future. For those of us charged with promoting the virtues of a career in the minerals industry this is encouraging news, as it provides us with the evidence to promote the increasing employment opportunities of a healthy and vibrant industry. However, for many others û particularly the employers in this industry û the news is not so rosy. The jobs are there, and in increasing numbers, but the workers arenÆt! Employers right across the industry are finding it increasingly difficult to fill vacancies with suitably qualified and skilled employees and the competition is becoming fiercer. In the minerals and energy sector, questions are being asked and solutions sought on the industryÆs ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce. From many quarters û industry, government and the education sector, calls for urgent action are becoming louder. The reasons for this are well known û the nature of the work, the remote location, perceptions of the industry, an aging workforce, the gender imbalance, the shrinking demographic of school leavers. It is the latter I wish to focus on û the Generation Y demographic û those who have recently left school, those who are in higher education or have recently entered the workforce, or those who are still at secondary school. These young people are the next cohort of potential employees for the industry. But our need for them appears to be greater that their perceived need for us! How do we engage them so they are informed about the industry? How do we inform and advise them so they are prepared to consider further education and training in disciplines and skill areas relating to our industry? How do we guide and motivate them to give it their best shot and work in it û at least for part of their working life? These are fundamental questions that many within the industry have been grappling with for quite some time. Let me share with you some of the strategies that the Minerals Council is implementing to address this issue.

"Société le Nickel exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, with controls that are extremely complex at all scales, including lithology, oxydo-reduction conditions, mineralogy and multivariate geochemistry. In this context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: support effect – the exploration data set can only warrant the estimation of large panels of 20 × 20 × 3 m3 that are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5 × 5 × 3 m3 information effect – the selection at the production stage uses estimates based on information that is much denser than that available for mine planning.The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for the estimation (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at the mining stage (ie the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria not only involve Ni grades, but also other elements such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO and SiO2.The solution presented in this paper is to construct an SMU multivariate simulation in the saprolitic horizon and construct an efficient post-processing aimed at producing multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model, which had its validity tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process that happens at the mining stage by offering the ability to simulate a composite value located at random within each block.The paper also presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream (reserve optimisation and mine sequencing) phases of the project. The original version of the paper (see Deraisme, Bertoli and Epinoux, 2014) used an early version of the scenario reduction plug-in (named S2RM) built in Isatis® software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set was based on Ni only. The implementation presented here is for the second generation of S2RM, where measuring the distance between the initial and the reduced set of realisations is based on all study variables. The Osborne Mine commenced production from an open pit in December 1994 with the first ore being hauled from underground one year later. Currently all ore is hauled up a decline by trucks until the shaft system is commissioned in early-1998. The mine is hosted within a multiply deformed and complex sequence of metamorphic, igneous and metasomatic rocks of mid Proterozoic age that are concealed beneath 20-40 metres of Mesozoic sedimentary cover. Epigenetic and largely hypogene copper - gold mineralisation occurs in a close spatial relationship with quartz - magnetite ironstones and is an important example of a significant mineralisation style in the Mt Isa inlier. Life of mine concentrator production, to year end 1997, totals 3.2 Mt of ore at 3.40 per cent Cu and 1.13 g/t Au. Total metal produced was 97 000 tonnes of copper and 2900 Kg of gold (95 600 oz) from some 348 000 tonnes of dry concentrates averaging 28.01 per cent Cu and 6.99 g/t Au. At the start of 1998 OsborneÆs total measured and indicated resource was stated at 11.38 Mt at 3.24 per cent Cu and 1.21 g/t Au with an ore reserve of 11.42 Mt at 2.90 per cent Cu and 1.09 g/t Au. Exploration efforts in and around the mine have been increased since 1996 and have resulted in an early success, with a 28 per cent increase in ore reserves since mine start-up, and the establishment of a 1.5 Mt inferred resource open to depth. During 1997 the performance of the concentrator has exceeded expectations with throughput having been increased to 1.45 Mt per annum. The Mining Cycle at Osborne has proceeded from discovery through feasibility and is currently seen to be in the latter part of the development stage and/or the early part of an expansion stage. This paper will describe the role of geology and exploration within these stages and will highlight how a number of key interpretations and decisions based on geology have both favourably and unfavourably affected the project.
