The Air Force Weapons Laboratory (AFWL) has been carrying out a series of experiments whose principal purpose is to measure the dynamic response of rock media to large pressure pulses. Coupled with the field experiments have been theoretical calculations simulating this response. These two approaches allow an appraisal of the current ability to measure in-situ rock response under extreme conditions and also give a fair estimate of the current state-of-the-art in the area of computer calculation of the response of "real" geologic media to a large load. The area chosen for the test series is composed of a sequence of sedimentary units (shale, sandstone, and limestone) located in the Estancia Valley 45 miles east of Albuquerque, N.M. (Fig. 1). The units, which dip gently off the uplifted Manzano Mountains to the west, are essentially horizontal at the test site. An extensive geologic and geophysical investigation of the area was carried out in the form of surface mapping and seismic exploration. Numerous holes were cored and material properties were determined from tests of the cores. In-situ geophysical measure¬ments were also carried out. The experiment consisted of loading a 60X40 ft test area with a 4000-psi transient exponentially decaying pressure pulse. The pulse was initiated at one end and traveled the 60-ft length of the test bed. The test area was instrumented with acceleration, velocity, and strain measuring devices placed in drill holes to depths of 30 ft. The corrosion resistance of stainless steels can be strongly affected by surface treatments. Changes in corrosion resistance can relate to surface composition, integrity and stability of the passive film, and to surface profile (roughness). Operations producing oxidation at the surface, such as annealing, heat treating, and welding, can result in a chromium-rich scale and a chromium-depleted metal surface. In order to restore full corrosion resistance, chemical or mechanical clean-up techniques must remove not only the oxide, but also a very thin layer of metal. Laboratory and field test studies show that these factors are particularly significant in less highly alloyed steels. Annealing stainless in a reducing atmosphere (bright annealing) avoids chromium depletion, but as-bright-annealed material does not display optimum corrosion resistance in certain environments. Electro passiva-tion can be applied to improve pitting resistance without significantly changing bright surface appearance. Potentiometric studies show that electropassivated material also displays significantly greater resistance to breakdown of passivity in acid solutions. The application of special surface finishes for appearance purposes can affect corrosion resistance. Roughness is a key factor. Samples of related appearance but with different surface profiles can show significant differences in corrosion resistance. Thus nonreflec-tive stainless with a relatively smooth surface produced by a special rolling process is much superior to material chemically etched to a similar low reflectivity. THE corrosion resistance of a stainless steel is affected by other factors in addition to its bulk composition and metallurgical structure. These other factors include those relating to the specific chemical and physical condition of the steel's surface. This paper will consider certain aspects of surface condition in relation to corrosion resistance. In particular, studies will be described on the effects of oxidation encountered in heat treating or welding operations, of passivation after bright annealing, and of different surface finishes. EFFECTS DUE TO OXIDATION When stainless steels are exposed to high temperature in an oxidizing environment, as in annealing or welding, the oxides formed are relatively rich in chromium. As a consequence of oxidation, the metallic layer directly beneath the scale may be low in chromium to some very thin but finite depth.1"8 Such a change in chromium content could lower the corrosion resistance at the surface, whether or not the oxide layer is removed. Studies were performed relating to the effect of oxidation and chromium depletion produced during annealing and welding on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. The nominal compositions of steels used in this study and others are given in Table I. A) Annealing Studies on 17 pet Cr Steels. 1) Effects of Pickling Treatments. Studies were performed to investigate the corrosion resistance of air annealed type 430 stainless as a function of the amount of electrolytic pickling after annealing. The material used in this study had been air annealed and electrolytically pickled in the mill. All scale had been removed, and yet the material showed unusually poor corrosion resistance. Laboratory electrolytic pickling studies were performed to determine whether additional metal removal from the surface would improve corrosion resistance. Electrolytic pickling was performed in a sulfuric acid bath using various conditions of bath acidity, temperature, time, and current density. The samples were then rated for corrosion resistance in a ferric chloride spot test. For this spot test, a solution was prepared by dissolving 10 g of FeCl3 . 6H2O, 5 g of NaCl, and 2.5 ml of concentrated HC1 in 200 ml of water. An area on a specimen was cleaned and a drop of test solution was placed on the prepared area. After 5 min, the drop was rinsed off and the area wiped dry. The spot was then rated between 1 and 5 by visual comparison with standard spots. The numerical rating of the standard spots can be described as follows: 1—No clouding of surface; 2—very slight clouding of surface; 3—slight clouding of surface; 4—moderate clouding of surface; 5—strong clouding of surface. A rating of 1 or 2 was considered to have passed the test, a rating of 4 or 5 represented failure, and a rating of 3 was considered borderline. The severity of etching in this test has been related to the actual chromium content at the surface.4 Etching (clouding) occurs on type 430 stainless (rating of 4 to 5) when the surface chromium content is 14 pct or less. The effects of current density and retention time when electrolytically repickling this material in 6 pct sulfuric acid are shown in Fig. 1. Increasing the cur-rent density or retention time improved corrosion resistance as measured by the spot test. Similarly, increasing acid concentration of the bath or bath tem-perature was found to improve corrosion resistance. The conditions making for improved spot ratings resulted in increased metal removal, regardless of specific pickling conditions used, Fig. 2.

Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paver.' The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal. Slurries from eight bituminous coal preparation plants in central and western Pennsylvania have been sampled and examined to determine the amount of recoverable coal in each. Examinations of the samples were made to determine the tons per hour of solids and the gallons per minute of water in the slurry; the size, ash, and sulfur analyses of the solids; and the sink-float characteristics of the larger solids. The extreme fines (—325 mesh material) from one of the samples has been examined further to determine the micron size fractions as well as the ash and sulfur content of the micron sizes. Collection of the Samples: Field trips were made to each of the plants where samples were obtained and discussions held with the preparation engineer prior to sampling. The flowsheet of the plant operation was studied and a time-period selected to obtain a representative sample. At least 20 1-gal samples of total plant bleed-off suspensions were collected at each plant in increments over designated periods belived to be typical of the plant flow Three of the samples were obtained from plants in the Pittsburgh area. Each plant supplied information on the capacity, operating time, type of cleaning equipment used, water and material balances, and auxiliary equipment. From the time required to collect given amounts of slurry and from the amount of solids in the slurry, total solids discharges from the plant were calculated and compared with the plant flow. Ash and sulfur analyses of the total solids were also checked, at some plants, with company figures. In all cases where checks could be made there was reasonable agreement between company figures and those reported here. Analysis of the Slurries: Representative fractions of properly agitated samples were examined in the laboratory to determine the specific gravities of the slurries. The solids and water were separated by filtration to check the weight of each so that the percent of solids in the pulp could be determined. From the resulting data, presented in Table I, it may be seen that the percent solids in the slurries ranges from 2.8 to 39.0 and the amount of solids from 2.61 to 45.61 tph. Size Analysis of Solids: Representative fractions of the slurries were permitted to settle and the clear water was removed by siphoning. The solids were then wet-screened at 28, 35, 48, 65, 100, 150, 200 and 325 mesh. Results of the size analyses are presented in Table 11. These results indicate the extreme variation of sizes and in most cases the degree of fineness of the solids. The amount of —325 mesh ranges from 22.5 to 84.5 pct and the amount of+200 mesh from 8.3 to 69.1 pct.

The method of characteristics which reduces the Buckley-Leverett mnlineur, partial differential equation to two first-order, linear differential equations is applied to the solution of a waterffood recovery problem for multiple lines of producing wells and one line of injection wells. The application of the method is described by a numerical example, and a brief theoretical background is given. From the results of this study, it is concluded that the cumulative water injected and oil produced are the same for single and multiple sets of producing wells. INTRODUCTION In this paper, the method of characteristics is applied to the solution of a waterflood recovery problem with multiple lines of producing wells and one line of injection wells. The application of the method to this type of recovery problem considerably simplifies the procedure of obtaining a numerical solution. It differs from the method described by Kern1 because it eliminates the need for integration in obtaining saturation fronts. In addition, the saturation history at any location within the field is obtained from a single diagram (time vs distance with saturation as a parameter)'. The paper includes a brief theory of the method of characteristics and its application to the solution of oil recovery problems. A numerical example is worked out, and the cumulative oil recovery-vs-time curve for a system with multiple sets of producing wells is obtained. This curve is then compared with the recovery curve of a system with only one set of producing wells. From this study, it is concluded that the cumulative water injected and oil produced are the same for single and multiple lines of producing wells. However, the recovery time is considerably longer for multiple sets of producing wells.

Like some other Pt-group metals palladium shows a low but considerable solid solubility of oxygen, which was found already from oxidation studies. The oxygen solid solubility of palladium in equilibrium with gaseous oxygen has been investigated at 900 - 1300 °C in oxygen (665 mbar) and air by gassing and analyzing polycrystalline samples. The 0-concentrations range from 40 to 90 ppm and decrease with rising temperature. The isobaric solubility can be represented by the least-squares fit log c0 = 0.5 log p02- 0.32 + 920/T (c0 in wt. ppm, p02 in mbar, T in K). The thermodynamic data of the exothermic solution reaction are calculated to ?H°= -17.6 kJ?mol-1 and ?S° -76.5 J?mol ? K-1. The behaviour of palladium in an oxygen atmosphere is characterized by the simultaneous reactions of the solution of oxygen in the metal and the formation and evaporation of volatile oxides besides the pure metal evaporation.

The effect of temperature on the physical properties of structural materials has been the subject of many investigations during the past decade. The literature on the effect of elevated temperatures. is voluminous, and during the last four years a great deal of experimental work has been carried out on the effect of low temperatures on the impact properties of steel. For many engineering purposes it is important to know the shock resistance of steels at low atmospheric temperatures, and with the ever-developing field of refrigeration and separation of materials at low temperatures, the normal limits of atmospheric temperature have been exceeded in practice. Iron and its alloys in the unnotched condition have a high impact strength at low temperatures, but in practice variations in type of notches result either from design or accidentally through scratches and surface or internal defects. A study of notched bar impact tests is, therefore, highly important to the engineer. A survey of the literature on low temperature impact testing indicates that chemical composition, heat treatment and method of testing have been the variables which have been considered in most previous work. In only a few instances has any mention of the steel- making method been mentioned and in these the comparison was between steel-making processes and not between steel-making methods on the same process. In view of the wide variations in impact properties at room temperature, in quench and strain ageing and in grain growth of steels of identical chemical composition, (by this is meant the usual five element analysis reported), it was felt

This report describes work on the problem of predicting oil recovery from a reservoir into which water is injected at a temperature higher than the reservoir temperature, taking into account effects of vis cosity-ratio reduction, heat loss and thermal expansion. It includes the derivation of the equations involved, the finite difference equations used to solve the partial differential equation which models the system, and the results obtained using the IBM 1620 and 7090-1401 computers. Figures and tables show present results of this study of recovery as a function of reservoir thickness and injection rate. For a possible reservoir hot water flood in which 1,000 BWPD at 250F are injected, an additional 5 per cent recovery of oil in place in a swept 1,000-ft-radius reservoir is predicted after injection of one pore volume of water. INTRODUCTION The problem of predicting oil recovery from the injection of hot water has been discussed by several researchers. l-6,19 In no case has the problem of predicting heat losses been rigorously incorporated into the recovery and displacement calculation problem. Willman et al. describe an approximate method of such treatment. 1 The calculation of heat losses in a reservoir and the corresponding temperature distribution while injecting a hot fluid has been attempted by several authors.7'8 In this report a method is presented to numerically predict the oil displacement by hot water in a radial system, taking into account the heat losses to adjacent strata, changes in viscosity ratio with temperature and the thermal-expansion effect for both oil and water. DERIVATION OF BASIC EQUATIONS We start with the familiar Buckley-Leverettg equation for a radial system:* This is sometimes referred to as the Lagrangian form of the displacement equation. If the injection water is at some temperature Ti which is above reservoir temperature TR, then lw, the flowing fraction which is water, is a function of both water saturation and fluid temperature at any given time and position in the reservoir. TRANSVERSE rupture tests have been commonly used in mechanical investigations of brittle materials. The specimens are simple, easy to prepare, and loading presents no difficulty. Owing to the complexity of stress distribution in bending1 one can determine stresses rigorously only for the elastic range. The bend-test results, however, are at times converted into tensile-strength data, determined as maximum fiber stress. The assumption is made that for small plastic deformations the linear stress-strain relation applies. This problem was experimentally investigated by Bach3 who tested cast iron in bending and in tension and found that the maximum fiber strength obtained in bending exceeded the experimental tensile strength by a factor depending on the geometry of the tested piece. The factor varied from 1.57 for a rectangular cross section to 2.12 for a circular cross section of the tested beam. Since this work was carried out 60 years ago, the cast iron used could be expected to have been highly brittle, thus the extent of plastic deformation prior to fracture very small. We have therefore carried out a number of tests on magnesium-modified cast iron with an average elongation of -5 pct. It was hoped that the data obtained from the tests would serve as a guideline for comparing data obtained in tension and bending for brittle materials. Mechanical properties were measured at room temperature on an Instron tensile machine at a crosshead speed of 0.05 in. per min. The three-point bend test employed cylindrical bars 0.20 in. in diameter with a 1.0-in. span. For the tensile test, cylindrical tensile specimens with a gage length of 0.85 in. and a diameter of 0.160 in. were used. Results are summarized in Table I.
