Recovery of selenium and tellurium at Copper Cliff by the Ontario Refining Co. has been previously described by the writer.l During 1935 a new building was erected to house this operation and description of the new plant and process form the subject of this paper. The building, of modern steel and tile construction, covers an area of 5900 sq. ft. with a volume of approximately 166,000 cu. ft. The large monitored center bay is flanked by two smaller outside bays, one of which is devoted to the tellurium section. All equipment, ceilings and upper walls, are treated with aluminum paint, giving good illumination and facilitating good housekeeping, essential from a health standpoint in handling material of this nature. Equipment Layout and type of equipment conforms to the requirements of the process as described below. In the selenium section, storage tanks, neutralizing tanks and precipitators are of steel construction, lead-lined and arranged for gravity flow (Fig. 1). The neutralizing tanks are equipped with water-cooled lead coils for controlling solution temperature, agitation being accomplished with compressed air. The precipitators are provided with mechanical agitators, and sulphur dioxide is introduced into the solution through 1/2-in. lead pipes leading from a manifold attached to the cover of the precipitator. Each precipitator has internal cooling coils and an air-jet exhauster to carry off fumes. Neutralized solutions are filtered in a 29-plate wooden filter press using heavy cotton duck as a filter medium, forced feed being maintained by a Welmet centrifugal pump. Dilute solutions are concentrated by evaporation in a vacuum evaporator, constructed of cast hard lead. Heat is supplied by an outside steam chest operating under 15 Ib. steam pressure. The solution is circulated through the steam chest by a pump of antimonial lead at a rate approximating 400 cu. ft. per min. The evaporator is evacuated by a water-jet condenser that creates a vacuum of 26 in. of mercury under normal operating conditions. The capacity of the vessel is 60 cu. ft. and the rate of evaporation 25 cu. ft. per hour.

The radial shrinkage during sintering of cylindrical compacts and loose aggregates of copper powder was measured. It was found to be nonuni-form from top to bottom of the samples and to depend upon the method of supporting them. The non-uniformity is due to the effect of gravity forces during sintering. Since gravity has an effect in sintering without externally applied stresses, no sharp dividing line can be drawn between conventional sintering and hot pressing. RECENT investigations of the sintering behavior of compacts1 and of loose powder aggregates2 have indicated that forces, other than those arising from surface tension effects, may play a role in shrinkage. In compacts it was shown that residual stresses from the pressing operation influence shrinkage behavior. In loose powder aggregates gravity forces due to the weight of the powder affect the ratio of shrinkage in the vertical and the horizontal direction. The main effort in the work reported here was to show that gravity plays a role also in the sintering of compacts. A few additional experiments were made confirming the effect of gravity in the sintering of loose powder aggregates. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Compacts and loose powder aggregates were prepared from irregularly shaped, electrolytic copper powder. Prior to use the powders were reduced 30 min at 400°C in dry hydrogen to remove surface oxides. Then the -325 mesh size fraction was separated from the -100 + 325 mesh fraction. The compacts were pressed at a pressure of 10,000 psi from 50 g of powder in a hardened steel die, 1 in. in diam. The height of the compacts was 0.725 i 0.005 in. An effort was made to get as uniform a green density distribution in the compacts as possible. The walls of the die were lubricated with a suspension of 3 pct of zinc stearate in acetone and the compacts were pressed using double action by first pressing the powder at 1200 psi with the die barrel supported, then removing the sup- ports and pressing to final pressure of 10,000 psi with the die barrel floating. The pressure was maintained for 10 sec. The compacts were sintered at a temperature of 925°C, generally for 1 hr. In order to maintain uniform temperature they were sintered in boats made from cylindrical copper blocks. The blocks were 2 in. in diam, either 2 or 2 1/2 in. long and, split to form the body of the boat and a lid. The body of the boat contained a cavity 1 3/8 in. wide, 1 in. deep and either 2 1/8 or 1 3/8 in. long. The longer cavity accomodated two samples, the shorter one only one sample. The uniformity of temperature distribution within the boats was checked with thermocouples welded to the top and bottom of the samples. The maximum variation between top and bottom temperatures was i 1/2°C. The actual sintering temperature was held constant within ±2°C. In order to determine the effect of gravity forces, i.e., the weight of the compacts, upon shrinkage, they were supported in the following ways during sintering: a) Full Bottom Support. The compacts rested either on a flat alundum disk or on alundum powders. b) Partial Bottom Support. The compacts rested on a graphite cylinder, 0.3 in. in diam which formed a projection on a larger graphite disk. It is difficult to balance the compact on the small projection. To avoid having the compact tip, a small hole was drilled through the compact and through the graphite disk and its projection. The graphite disk was then suspended from the lid of the boat by a thin iron wire which passed through the holes in the disk and the compact. c) Top Support, first type. A hole 3/32 in. in diam was drilled diametrically through the green compact 3/16 in. from the top of the compact. The compact was sintered suspended from an alundum rod (thermocouple protection sleeve) inserted into the hole. d) Top Support, second type. A hole was drilled axially through the center of the compact. The upper part of the hole from the top surface of the compact one fourth of the way down was 1/16 in. in diam; the lower part of the hole from the bottom surface three fourth of the way up was 3/32 in. in diam. The compact was suspended from the lid of the boat by an iron wire passing through the upper part of the hole and then tied into a knot. The loose powder aggregates were made by filling l in. deep, l in. diam cylindrical graphite molds with -325 mesh powder. EXPERIENCE has shown how difficult it is to obtain information regarding laboratory-tests in connection with the chlorination-process for the extraction of gold from its ores, and I therefore present the following method, somewhat in detail, for the benefit of those who may desire to pursue research work in this field. The ore chosen was a partly-decomposed porphyry, extremely siliceous and comparatively soft, and of an average value per ton of from $25 to $26 in gold and $0.68 in silver. The chemical analysis gave : Fe2O3, 3.35; FeS, 1.5; MnO2, 0.75; ZnCO3, 4; Al2O3, 3.20; H2O, 0.7; SiO2 and insol., 83.50 per cent. The ore, first crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, was coned and quartered until a 45-lb. sample was obtained. Samples for assay and analysis, taken from this lot by means of riffles, were crushed to pass a 100-mesh screen. The original sample was divided into 10-lb. lots, of which one was crushed to pass a 10-mesh screen; another through a 12-; the third through a 20-, .and the last through a 30-mesh screen. Because of the production of an excessive quantity of fine material it was deemed inexpedient to crush finer than 30-mesh size-a decision the wisdom of which is proved by the data in Table I., showing the increasing ratio of slimes, in proportion as the ore is crushed finer. In order to determine the percentage of fines in the sizes of mesh selected, a weighed sample of ore was taken from each mesh, and a sample from the 10-mesh lot was passed successively through 20-, 40- and 100-mesh screens, and the percentage remaining on each screen determined. This process was repeated with the 12-, 20- and 30-mesh lots, with the results given in Table I.

ALTHOUGH Kennecott's orebody has long been outlined, it is still necessary to define further its limits. This mine, long an advocate of churn drill methods, recently supplemented its practice by using a diamond drill. So far, the diamond drill holes have been along the main canyon floor which traverses the mine area. This zone, highly fractured, is cut by numerous friable quartz veinlets encountered within the porphyry. These veinlets, formed by filling contracted porphyry fractures with hot, siliceous, mineral-bearing solutions, are often more highly mineralized than adjacent porphyry. They pulverize on contact, yielding only slight amounts of core. For this reason neither analysis of core recovered (amounting to 37.5 pct of approximately 10,000 ft of hole drilled) nor sludge analysis considered separately would give correct assays. The following equation has been adopted: actual weight theoretical actual weight core — theoretical weight sludge Drilling is done un.der contract. Collection of core and sludge samples together with double-checked assaying is done by the company. Microscopic, specto-graphic, and X-ray examination of rock specimen saved is carried on at the University of Utah. A fund, set up by Kennecott Copper Corp. at the University, has encouraged cooperation in solution of mining research problems. The drill used is a Longyear hydraulic powered by a Waukesha 26-hp gasoline motor. A pump, Bean Royal type, is powered by a 7-hp Briggs-Stratton gasoline motor. Weight of unit is 4000 lb and is placed under tripod of 35-ft wood poles within a 25-ft sq area. The following results have been attained: Avg depth of hole drilled, ft 1215 Avg drilling depth per 8-hr shift, ft 10.11 Core Size, In. Avg depth of NC casing, ft 21 2 11/16 Avg depth of NX casing and size core, ft 178 2Ye Avg depth of BX casing and size core. ft 427 1% Avg depth of AX casing and size core, ft 585 1 5/32 Through the use of metal sludge collection boxes, 12 ft long, 18 in. wide, and varying from 12 to 24 in. in depth, sludge recovery has been maintained above 95 pct. Samples, both core and sludge, are assembled for each sample interval and averaged in 50-ft bench increments. Determinations for mineral values are made at both the mine and mill. Assay results varying in excess of 0.05 of copper assay values are rerun to determine correct assay. The organization chart for the Kennecott Utah copper mine is shown in Fig. 1. The Utah mine requires approximately four men per shovel shift to drill solid rock, properly slope banks, and trim loose material from the top of bench sections in making them safe for men and equipment working below. During recent years, while the mine has been worked day and night, powder crews have worked day shift only. Series of toe holes drilled back of advancing electric shovels comprise approximately 70 pct of all mine drilling. These holes, spaced about 21 ft apart, have a depth of 24 ft. Of the footage drilled, 25 pct is for vertical holes either 24 or 28 ft deep, spaced about 28 ft centers along the top rim of banks. This combination of toe holes, using an Ingersol-Rand DA 35 drifter mounted on a tripod and the vertical holes using an Ingersol-Rand Type X71 wagon drill is standard practice above the pit elevation. These benches are 68 ft high, with a few exceptions, while benches below the pit elevation are 50 ft high and require very little drilling other than toe holes. Five benches, varying in height from 80 to 100 ft, require a combination of toe holes plus vertical holes and bank holes or electric churn drill holes. Bank holes using the DA 35 drifter and electric churn drill using Bucyrus-Erie Model 29T, account for 5 pct of feet drilled. Until the past year, drilling of fill material on upper levels was accomplished by churn drill method. Wagon drills are now used for fills because they can be set up and drill a hole an hour. It is necessary to run an air drill 7 hr for each 8-hr shovel shift. Average drilling rates during the past year were as follows: DA 35 drifter using 2 and 3-man crews — 4.36 ft per man hr X 71 wagon drill using 2-man crews — 6.45 ft per man hr DA 35 drifter bank holes, 3-man crews — 2.53 ft per man hr Bucyrus-Erie churn drill, 2-man crews —1.9 ft per man hr Total mine avg — 4.57 ft per man hr Mine practice assigns powdermen to job locations where they perform all drilling and blasting work within the area. Almost as much labor is consumed in springing and loading holes as in drilling them. Average powder consumption is approximately as follows: Per Electric Shovel Shift, Lb To spring and chamber holes — 50 Blasting — 500 Trim banks — 50 One fifth of all powder used is Hercules hercomite bag powder while four fifths is Hercules gelamite 65 pct strength in 1 Vi in. x 8 in. sticks. Frozen material, overhanging from top banks, creates a winter hazard to shovel operators and equipment. Experiments are being conducted with a high-speed Hercules powder in an effort to eliminate this condition. Banks are trimmed by powdermen who lodge 8 or 10 bundles of powder, containing 15 or 20 sticks each, across the upper surfaces of each working face. To each bundle of powder is attached a primer with 6-ft fuse which is lighted as the powdermen, who have lowered themselves down the bank on ropes, ascend to safety. Three angle dozers, D8 caterpillars, make grades and move supplies for the average 31 drilling machines working daily. Compressed air is furnished by three Ingersol-Rand compressors, each with rated capacity of 3750 cu ft of air per min at 100 lb reservoir pressure.

MINING geology is a progressive study, so we must look to the future for the solution of many of its most significant problems. These problems, world-wide in scope, offer ample opportunity for the exercise of the utmost skill and intelligence by all that attempt to solve theta, as it is generally recognized that many ore deposits of the future will he found only by months or years of combined intelligent effort by the several engineering groups. Renewed appraisals are continually being made to better understand the relationship of physical-chemical processes to ore deposition and other mineralization and to interpret the findings of the geophysicists and others in terms of economic results. A study of current geologic activi¬ties clearly reflects the growing tendency for cooperation between the different branches of geology in order to appraise their united efforts. In line with these activities arrangements have been made to transfer the geophysical section of the U. S. Bureau of Mines to the Geological Survey.

This paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in conlmercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordaq4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. Analysis of Steeling Silver Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same ana,lysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry I1 in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. The market at present supplied by shipments from the phosphate districts of Quebec, Ontario, and New York State requires high-grade ore, carrying from 75 per cent. to 90 per cent. of phosphate of lime. In sorting out such material by hand, much valuable phosphate is necessarily left in the "culls" or refuse, besides which, much phosphate-rock of low-grade is not now mined at all, because it cannot be made available by the crude method of cobbing and hand-sorting. The utilization of such material, which would, of course, greatly benefit this industry, requires either a mechanical separation or a chemical process which would concentrate the phosphate in a form suitable for agriculture. Considering the rich phosphate now shipped as the first class, we may arrange the lower grades in three classes, as follows: Second Class.—Cull-ore from the first class, and the mass of deposits having, as gangue, pyroxene or hornblende. The following table gives the hardness and specific gravity of the minerals concerned: Hardness Spec. gravity. It may be reduced to fine powder by successive treatment in a rock-breaker and a Sturtevant or Frisbee-Lucop mill, or other suitable apparatus, and in this condition it could be largely used by applying it freely upon exhausted clay soils, such as occur in Quebec and Ontario. DEFENSE Materials Procurement Agency has been moving rapidly to encourage copper industry expansion programs. Although copper production is at a high level, a shortage exists on a world-wide basis as well as on the domestic scene. Projected expansion programs will not ease this current demand for most of them are 2 to 5 years off. Refining facilities are adequate but there is a shortage of ore and scrap, and it is for this reason that the expansion programs are directed at developing more sources of supply. The domestic expansion programmed thus far and understood to have been arranged with price escalation should the domestic price go to 271/20, were summarized by American Metal Markets as follows (dates of announcement are given in parenthesis: .1-Copper Cities Mining Co.'s, $15,000,000 expansion near Miami, Ariz., to be operating about 1954. DMPA will buy 22,500 tons of copper a year up to a given amount on an agreed price of 23¢ per pound, with some exceptions and depending upon salability at a higher price to other purchasers in the U. S. (September 25th). 2-An RFC loan of $60,000 to North Butte Mining Co. to be paid off on the basis of deliveries at a purchase price of 241/20 per pound (September 25th). 3-A $25,000,000 expansion program by Phelps Dodge to provide 38,000 tons per year by late 1954. DMPA would purchase it at a price of 22¢ per pound up to 112,500 tons providing other purchasers in the U. S. will not pay a higher price (September 26th). 4-Anaconda Copper Mining Co. $40,000,000 expansion in Nevada to provide more than 30,000 (might be increased to 45,000) tons per year. DMPA would purchase the copper at 250 per pound for a limited period of time if it is not salable to industrial users at above this price. Production would start around 1953 (November 14th).

BAUXITE is known mainly as the ore from which aluminum is smelted but it has large use also in the manufacture of artificial abrasives and as a basis for certain chemical industries. A small amount is used for refractories and for other purposes. COMPOSITION Dana and others give the mineral formula of bauxite as A1203.2H20 and the composition as A12037 73.9 pct; H2O, 26.1 pct. It has been definitely shown, however, that bauxite does not exist as a specific mineral but rather as a rock. The term is now used synonymously with aluminum ore and it embraces gibbsite (hydrargillite or alpha trihydrate), A1203.3H20 (A12037 65.4 pct; H2O, 34.6 pct); boehmite (alpha mono¬hydrate), A1203.H20(Al203) 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct); diaspore (beta monohydrate), A1203.H2O(A12037 85 pct; H2O, 15 pct), and mixtures in various proportions of any two of them. Bauxite of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic in Europe is predominantly a mixture of gibbsite and boehmite, subordinately a mixture of boehmite and diaspore, or gibbsite and diaspore. The bauxite of North and South America, tropical Africa, Asia, and Australasia consists largely of gibbsite. Corundum (A1203) is not included under bauxite, although gradations from bauxite to emery or corundum exist. All bauxite, irrespective of the aluminum minerals composing it, contains certain impurities, including silica, in the form of clay minerals (kaolinite, halloysite, and others) or quartz, iron oxide (as hematite or goethite), titania (as leucoxene or rutile), iron sulphide (as pyrite or marcasite), iron carbonate (siderite), and calcium carbonate (as calcite); the last three mentioned in minor amount and of local occurrence only. Bauxite belongs to a group of partly consolidated materials called laterites, formed by surface weathering. This group includes also impure siliceous and ferruginous bauxite and siliceous and

DURING the time I was in charge, of this mine, from 1914 to 1915, I had occasion to read the interesting papers by T. T. Read and C. M. Weld about these deposits, to find how far their observations corroborated mine. To quote from the paper on "The Mineral Production and Resources of China" by T. T. Read:' "The iron ores at Tayeh lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark gray syenitic rock. * * * * At one place it is slightly magnetic, apparently having been partly reduced to the magnetic oxide by the action of reducing solutions, which have deposited small amounts of copper and iron sulphides along the foot wall." To quote from the paper on "The Tayeh Iron Ore Deposits"2 by C. M. Weld: "I find the orebodies described as occurring along an approximately E-W contact between horn-blende-granite and limestone. * * * * The granite is a granitoid rock consisting essentially of quartz, potash-feldspar and hornblende." These quotations show the differences of opinion entertained by two observers. My own study of these interesting deposits has been intermittent amid the manifold duties devolving upon a superintendent. General Description of the Deposits The deposits are situated to the west of the Yangtse River, being con¬nected with the river by a standard-gage railroad of 56 li (16.16 miles, 26 km.) in length, as shown in Fig. 1. The general topography of the region is of mature age, showing broad valleys with sluggishly meandering streams. These deposits are worked as two mines, named the Tieh Shan Mining Department and the Teh Tao Wan Mining Department; the former consisting of three orebodies more or less connected, named Tieh Man Kan, Sha Mau Tze and Lung Tung, and the latter consisting of Chang Pei Shan, Sze Tze Shan, Ta Shih Men, Yeh Chih Ping and Tsin Shan, also more or less connected, as shown in Fig. 2.

During the time I was in charge of this mine, from 1914 to 1915, I had occasion to read the interesting papers by T. T. Read and C. M. Weld about these deposits, to find how far their observations corroborated mine. To quote from the paper on "The Mineral Production and Resources of China" by T. T. Read:' "The iron ores at Tayeh * * * * lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark gray syenitic rock. * * * * At one place it is slightly magnetic, apparently having been partly reduced to the magnetic oxide by the action of reducing solutions, which have deposited small amounts of copper and iron sulphides along the foot wall." To quote from the paper on "The Tayeh Iron Ore Deposits"2 by C. M. Weld: "I find the orebodies described as occurring along an approximately E-W contact between hornblende-granite and limestone. * * * * The granite is a granitoid rock consisting essentially of quartz, potash-feldspar and hornblende."' These quotations show the differences of opinion entertained by two observers. My own study of these interesting deposits has been intermittent amid the manifold duties devolving upon a superintendent. The United Eastern Mining Co.'s property is in the Oatman, Gold Roads mining district of Mohave County, Ariz. The mine and mill are 26 mi. (41.8 km.) southwest of Kingman, the nearest railway connection. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz with some andesite. The values, which are mainly gold, alloyed with approximately 34 per cent., by weight, of silver, are extremely fine so that fine grinding is a most important factor in extraction. The milling process, briefly, consists of single-stage, coarse-crushing, two-stage ball milling in cyanide solution, followed by combined mechanical and air agitation, and by straight counter-current decantation. The Merrill zinc-dust precipitation method is used to recover the values, and is preceded by the Crowe vacuum treatment of the solution. The most notable features of the plant are the absence of filters, and the use of short peb mills loaded with steel balls, for fine grinding. As originally designed, the capacity of the mill was to be 200 tons per day, although the grinding end was to be capable of handling double that amount. By adding extra agitators and thickeners and by some alterations to the grinding end, the daily capacity has been raised to 285 tons. This, it is hoped, may be increased to 300 tons during the warm months of the present year. Petroleum production in the Rocky Mountain district during 1929 registered a small decline from that of the previous year, conforming with a gradual decrease in the amount of oil produced during the last few years. A number of causes may be mentioned to account for this result, chiefly overproduction in other regions and the apparent desire of operators in this territory to conform to the policy of proration and retrenchment adopted by special agreement among operators in many of the fields. Unit operation has been adopted to control oil production from the Sundance sands in the Salt Creek field, Wyoming, in line with the general effort to stabilize this phase of the industry and prevent excessive drilling of new wells. Another factor which greatly retarded development in the Rocky Mountain region was the executive order of President Hoover issued in March refusing the award of new prospecting permits to future applicants and threatening cancellation of all existing permits upon which actual drilling had not been done as specified by law. Only four states in the Rocky Mountain region are important oil producers. In 1929 Wyoming led with an average daily output of 52,600 bbl., followed by Montana, with 10,730 bbl.; Colorado, with 6500 bbl., and New Mexico with 2700 bbl. daily average. These states bear the following percentage relation to total production in the Rocky Mountain district: Wyoming, 72; Montana, 15; Colorado, 9; New Mexico, 4., (Table 1.) The total average daily production was approximately 73,000 bbl. and the total production of all four states during the year was 26,534,606 bbl. This is 2.7 per cent. of the total oil production of the United States during this period. Colorado Although Colorado is not a large producer of oil and natural gas, its oil operations are widely distributed over the state. THE Clinton group of the Silurian holds the red or fossiliferous ore; its outcrops have been mapped by the State or U. S. Geological Survey. This group is from 100 to 500 ft. thick in Alabama. There are places where it is entirely missing (doubtless islands in the Silurian Sea). In Etowah County, in part of Greasy Cove and vicinity, the upper seam is a coral reef impregnated with the red ore; in this same county, step, faults bring up the ore in three or four separate ridges practically parallel. In Blount County and on Raccoon Mountain, the ore runs under the carboniferous rocks and outcrops in the valleys. In examining some bore holes made in drilling for oil, the writer found the Clinton group continuing under the Warrior coal field wherever the drill has gone deep enough. It demonstrates the possibility of a source for red ore not seriously thought of until lately. The following bore holes made principally for oil, given in Bulletin No. 22, Geological Survey of Alabama, show the presence of either ore or red rock, and suggest vast resources yet to be outlined and developed for ore in the future. The locations are given by number on the map. Hole No. 1 was drilled 6 miles southeast of Russellville, Franklin County, by the Woodward Oil & Gas Co. It passed through 160 ft. of Clinton, but only a small show of red ore was found at 1280-1400 feet. A test well, No. 2, drilled near Atwood, Franklin County, in section 26, township 8, range 14, penetrated the Clinton at 1608 ft. and found 38 ft. of limy red rock, also 8 ft. of some blood red ending at 1820 ft., making 46 ft. of red rock in all. It is reported that some good ore was cut through but this work was done by a churn drill. The hole was continued by diamond drill from here. At least 400 ft. of the formation was classified as Clinton.

Clement Le Neve Foster was born at Camberwell on March 23, 1841, his father being Peter Le Neve Foster, who was secretary of the Society of Arts for 26 years. As a boy of 12 he was sent to school at Boulogne, receiving a preliminary education there; and in 1857, when only 16 years old, he took his degree of Bachelor of Science from the University of France. In October of the same year he returned to London and entered the Royal School of Mines, which was then in Jermyn Street. He distinguished himself by winning a scholarship and a medal, and by securing his degree as Associate of the Royal School of Mines in the abbreviated period of two years. This was followed by a year at the Bergakademie at Freiberg; subseque1:tly he visited several mining districts in Germany and Hungary. On returning to England, in November, 1860, he received from Sir Roderick Murchison an appointment upon the Geological Survey. During five years he was engaged in field-work, first on the Wealden beds in Kent and Sussex, and then in Derbyshire and Yorkshire. At this time his evenings were largely devoted to reading for a degree from London University. In 1861 he matriculated, obtaining the Bachelor of Science in 1863, with honors in biology and a University scholarship in geology; in 1864 he passed the two examinations entitling him to the Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1865 he received the degree of Doctor of Science. In 1865 he succeeded Mr. Richard Pearce as lecturer to the Miners' Association of Cornwall and Devon. At the same time he became the curator to the museum of the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall at Penzance, a member of the council in 1873, and a life-member in 1874; he made frequent donations to the museum, besides contributing several valuable papers to
