A part of the East Bay Municipal Utility District?s Folsom South Canal Connection Project, 430 feet of raw water pipe was installed using micro tunneling beneath the Mokelumne River. The access shafts for this crossing were constructed 50 and 35 feet deep through very dense sands and soft sandstone and siltstone. High groundwater and the immediate source of recharge from the river required watertight shaft construction methods. The shaft contractor, Drill Tech of Antioch, CA, used a brand new Bauer cutter-soil mixing (CSM) rig to construct the large shafts. The structural concept is similar to secant piles, but instead of creating cylinders of soilcrete, the CSM rig creates interlocking rectangular panels. This technology has been used previously in Europe, Asia, and Canada, but this was the first project to use CSM technology in the United States. Cutter-soil mixing technology has other applications beyond shaft construction, including retaining wall construction and levee reinforcement.

The current laboratory methods for assessing the vibration attenuation performance of seats involve repetitive trials with a number of human occupants, and raise certain ethical concerns. Moreover, the measurements with human subjects yield considerable variability in the data. Alternatively, several anthropodynamic manikins have been developed for effective assessments of the coupled seat occupant system [1]. The effectiveness of a manikin in predicting the response of a coupled seat-occupant system lies in its ability to reproduce the biodynamic response of the seated human body in terms of force-motion relationship at the body-seat interface, such as apparent mass (APMS). A number of prototype manikins have thus been developed on the basis of biodynamic characteristics of vertical vibration-exposed seated occupants of different body masses in the vicinity of 5th, 50th and 95th percentile male population. This study concerns with the analysis of a passive prototype manikin to enhance its ability to reproduce the idealized APMS response characteristics of the vibration-exposed seated human subjects defined in ISO-5982[2] for mean body masses of 55, 75 and 98 kg. Methods The APMS responses of a prototype anthropodynamic passive manikin were thoroughly characterized in the laboratory under different excitations and body mass configurations. The manikin was designed with sufficient flexibility to configure mechanical-equivalent models corresponding to seated body masses of 55, 75 and 98 kg, by adding/removing specified masses and springs (Fig. 1). The manikin, configured for a specific body mass, was positioned on a rigid seat without a backrest, which was fixed to the force platform of a whole-body vertical vibration simulator. The simulator was programmed to synthesize random vertical vibration with flat acceleration power spectrum in the 0.4-20 Hz frequency range with two different magnitudes: 1 and 2 m/s2 overall rms acceleration. The total static and dynamic forces of the manikin to and the seat were measured using the force platform, while a single axis accelerometer was installed on the seat pan to measure acceleration due to vertical excitation. Mining haul trucks comprise the majority of the equipment used in underground limestone mining operations and are known to emit high levels of noise. A previous study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicates that 70-90 percent of all miners have a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) great enough to be classified as a hearing disability by retirement age. These results demonstrate the public health need to protect the hearing of workers in the mining industry, including haul truck drivers. Cab enclosures present an opportunity to isolate the haul truck operator from both truck and other noise in the mining environment. A total of twenty-five haul truck cabs were studied which were divided into three style (treatment) categories determined by soundproofing features and technology for noise reduction: old-, new-, and retrofitted-style. This study examines the contribution of cab acoustics, operator performance, and maintenance to noise reduction for each cab style. Dosimeters were used to measure 8-hr time weighted average sound pressure levels (TWA8 SPLs) inside and outside the cabs to determine if different acoustical treatments affect cab attenuation. Adherence to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 90 dB TWA8 (with a 90 dB threshold) was used as the main indicator of overall noise reduction achieved. Dosimetery results indicate only 2% of the samples exceeded the PEL, but samples could still be reduced much further. Descriptive and comparative statistics indicate that noise levels inside the new-style cabs are significantly lower than the other two cab styles. Also, data suggest that there is no difference in noise exposures when comparing the old-style to retrofitted cab styles. Operator influence (opening doors and windows) was a significant factor for increasing noise exposure. This paper demonstrates that properly designed cabs can achieve major noise reductions, but noise levels could still be reduced much further below the MSHA PEL. New-style cabs, equipped with modern noise-reduction treatments, exhibit much lower noise exposures than the other two cabs styles, and the effectiveness of the current noise-reduction treatments for retrofitted cabs is questionable. Haul truck driver observations indicate that improved noise exposure reduction training is needed. Finally, specific targets for future noise reduction research are suggested that will further contribute to the prevention of hearing loss for haul truck operators.

The increasing depth, mechanisation and distance of working areas from surface connections places an ever greater contaminant burden on ventilation airflows. Some British Coal mines are already experiencing significant problems in providing adequate climatic conditions in the working areas and have had to introduce air conditioning. Previous work has shown that in mines of low to moderate virgin strata temperature the application of controlled district recirculation could serve to improve climatic conditions at the working area.

Keywords: Rheology, Viscoelastic, Oil In this paper we present the results of the rheological property measurements on viscoelastic composite materials used in oil industry. Laboratory experiments were carried out to determine important thermophysical, rheological and mechanical properties of the test materials using both the standard commercial and in-house made equipment. The composites with the paramagnetic particles (?-iron oxide) are exhibited a significant magnetic memory after magnetic treatment. The measured value of the yield stress after the magnetic treatment increased almost twice in comparison with the yield stress value of the magnetically untreated composite. The yield stress of the composite material exponentially decreases with time and reaches its magnetically untreated value after 15 hours. The yield stress also increases with the amount of the paramagnetic powder additive, and it reaches a maximum value at 8 wt-% of this additive. The obtained results provide valuable information for computer modeling of the viscoelastic fluid flow in pipes of complex geometry.

The Government of Canada recently passed a new regulation to control the liquid discharges from metal mines in Canada. The Metal Mining Effluent Regulation of the Federal Fisheries Act will come into force within the next six months. As a result the Ontario Regional Office of Environment Canada has developed a compliance promotion program to accompany the new regulation. How the mines implement the regulation will be key to its success. This paper will briefly outline the components of this regulation, including the reporting structure, the discharge parameters and limits, as well as the requirement for the mines to conduct long-term environmental effects monitoring on their effluent discharge. The presentation will give a brief account of the compliance promotion program, and then focus on the spill trends from Ontario mining operations. The province of Ontario has the largest concentration of metal mining operations in the country with approximately 40 active mines.

In 1999, Eramet bought the ferromanganese plants in Porsgrunn and Sauda (Norway) and Marietta (USA). With an ownership in the Comilog mine, the plants will operate with a high amount of Comilog ore. The properties of Comilog ore are reviewed and compared to a number of industrial operations. Important ore properties are chemical and mineralogical analyses, CO reactivity and mechanical strength. The advantage of Comilog ore is its contribution to lower energy and coke consumption. However, special precautions must be taken regarding the amount of fines and water introduced in the furnace, as Comilog ore is more porous compared to other Mn ores.

Keywords: Multipass grinding, Residual stress, Retained austenite, X-ray diffraction The study investigated residual stresses behaviors and their superposition effect in D2 dies for thread-rolling applications. A nested factorial experiment was applied to test hypotheses that the residual stresses profiles change due to combination of heat treatment and multipass grinding operations, and that certain patterns can be derived due to the memory relationship between pre-existing and final residual stresses distributions. The amount of the retained austenite along with residual stresses in variation with depth was measured using x-ray diffraction technique. Statistical analyses indicate that the proposed hypotheses hold. Residual stresses distributions as well as tensile peak location were found to be significantly influenced by the treatment parameters used. Unique characteristic patterns in the residual stresses profiles were observed due to multipass grinding technique across all experimental conditions. This finding suggested a plausible memory relationship between the cutting passes, and the causes of the foregoing results are further proposed and discussed.

Goldcorp Inc.?s Red Lake Mine (RLM) is situated in the Red Lake Mining District, a history rich North Western Ontario mining community. Red Lake Mine formerly known as the Dickenson Mine has experienced various degree and type of bursting since the 1960?s. During the 1960?s burst were common in shrinkage stope box hole pillars. After discovering the High Grade Zone (HGZ) between its 30th and 39th levels, the mine has changed its mining method to mechanized cut and fill with cemented paste fill. The rock mass at RLM is mainly massive basalt-ultramafic and behaves in a manner consistent with massive brittle rock. This paper presents the use of empirical and numerical design techniques. The use of the Span versus RMR graph to determine critical stope spans at RLM and the use of numerical design techniques to determine the stability of the sills and post pillars. Selecting of a sill pillar dimension is illustrated using four different failure criteria?s. The four failure criteria are m & s failure criteria, the Pillar Stability Graph, deviatoric stress ???-?3), and induced stress level criteria ?1 /UCS, which are calibrated to RLM?s ground conditions. A wide range of case histories has been studied ranging from stable to highly burst prone ground conditions in order to calibrate the failure criteria to observed conditions and quantified to local micro seismic system.

A Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA) was developed in Australia after a series of mine disasters in the 1990’s. A MHRA is used to help prevent major hazards, i.e. fire, explosion, wind-blast, outbursts, spontaneous combustion, roof instability and chemical and hazardous substances, from injuring miners. A MHRA is a structured process that identifies the characteristics of major hazards, assesses and ranks the risk they present, and evaluates engineering and administrative controls to mitigate them. These controls typically consists of a broad spectrum of prevention, monitoring, first response, and emergency response techniques and helps to move an operation from a reactive to a proactive approach towards safety. This paper documents a MHRA performed at an underground mine where strata instabilities and fire hazards may threaten the condition of its escapeways. The objective of this MHRA is to 1) identify what hazards could affect the egress through the mine’s escapeways, 2) determine what unwanted events pose the greatest threat for the mine, and 3) recommend a plan to prevent or recover from the potential disruption of egress through the escapeway. The plan provides information on the key existing controls that should be monitored and audited, and makes recommendation of new potential controls to further reduce related risks. By documenting the use of MHRA to this specific ground control issue, this paper provides a framework for others to judge the merits of this approach and to help design and perform these activities.

This paper utilises 3-D finite-element modeling to study the static and dynamic lateral harmonic response of inclined piles, in a homogenous and a non-homogenous soil, modeled as a linear hysteretic medium. The results of a comprehensive parameter study are presented in the form of dimensionless plots of: (a) static and dynamic swaying and rocking stiffnesses and damping ratios, and (b) distribution of internal forces (bending moment, shear and axial force) with depth. These plots can be readily utilised in practical applications and they offer insight on the role of the inclination in the response of flexible piles.

Natural Gas has been available in New Zealand for twenty years. During that time the gas share of the energy market has grown and now natural gas forms a significant part of New Zealand's energy scene, helping consumers to achieve a higher standard of living, and reducing dependence upon imported oil. Natural gas is now used for petrochemical manufacture and power generation in addition to direct supply to consumers. As concern for the environment continues to build, natural gas will have an increasingly important role to fill in these markets. This paper sets out the background to the development of natural gas in New Zealand and identifies the current markets. It then looks at those matters which are likely to influence the role of natural gas in the 1990s.

This report concerns types, quantities, specifications, and uses of non-metallic minerals as a basis for improving their supply, conservation, and utilization. Supply-demand details concerning mineral fillers, rooting granules, and roofing rock used in asphalt are incorporated in this report, along with highlights on production and sales of rooting, floor tile, and other related asphalt products of California. Comparable data for the United States are included. Although large quantities of commercially prepared mineral fillers are used in asphalt for paving and related applications in other States, addition of commercial fillers for these uses rarely is required in California because of the natural tines available. On the other hand, California manufacturers of asphalt products other than having utilize about 300,000 tons of asbestos, diatomite, limestone, mica, soapstone, and other nonmetallic minerals as filler, mainly for reeling and flooring. Also about 500,000 tons of roofing, granules is produced in California, most of which goes into roofing manufacture in California. In addition. A significantly large and growing tonnage of relatively coarse mineral aggregates Ire used on low-angle, built-up, asphalt roofs to produce in attractive surface and offer protection against the clements. Clearly ill minerals used in asphalt products manufactured in California come from local sources, except asbestos and mica--and there are indications that local deposits of those commodities could be utilized in some use categories.

Having been retained as a legal expert for the fatality at the Canberra, Australia project, it made me aware of how good intended blasters profess to be implosion experts. Owners and contractors can be misled by these representations, seeing a video of Directionalized Structures constructed of reinforced concrete may be impressive to watch, but lack sound evidence of the true mechanics of an actual “implosion”; on steel structures more prevalently. If any well intended blaster comes to a determination that he can implode a structure, it should be not be construed he cannot. It should be well investigated that the specific blaster has verifiable experience. What happened in Australia reflects on all end users of explosives. I have heard a direct quote in our project in Alberta, “We don’t want to have what happened in Canberra”. Such a tragedy could have, and should have been avoided. Simple by using the “Right Tool for the Job”. We should sideline egos and economics. Would any competent blaster compromise his or her reputation, company or insurability? More importantly, have an honest conscience knowing that if the proper explosive is available, use it, don’t shortcut it. If possible expand the schedule. Better, yet, examine all avenues before the project, and last, cancel the project. A human life is our best asset and should not be compromised.

"The Beal Mountain mine near Anaconda, Montana, is an interesting case history of a mine that has continued operations despite several large pit wall failures over a period of approximately 10 years. The largest event involved some 3.9 million tons of rock that has moved steadily at a rate of about 0.05 ft/day since 1992. This paper documents the geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring programs implemented at Beal to provide the company with a comfortable baseline that supported ongoing operations. The success and failure of a variety of stabilization measures will be discussed, along with typical instrumentation responses for several significant events. The success of Beal Mountain serves as a good model for mines faced with serious geotechnical challenges."

Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. The year 2001 coincided with the forty-fifth year of blasting-control specialization by the author. Commencing with the construction of the Saint Lawrence Seaway System in 1956 and continuing until the present time this career has spanned one of the most progressive and exciting periods in the still relatively short history of commercial blasting. The paper touches upon a number of the more interesting projects with which the writer was involved during those early days, including the removal by explosives of “Ripple Rock” the infamous underwater hazard to shipping which at one time inhibited ocean traffic along the Inside Passage between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia, Canada’s most westerly province. Various assignments involving incidents from devastatingly ,tragic to comically absurd are described, along with personalities encountered along the away, most of them readily recognizable as giants in the field of explosives engineering. Various stages in the evolution of state-of-the-art explosive products, initiation systems vibration monitoring equipment and limiting criteria are compared and some of the effects these have had on safety and productivity during the last forty-five years are analyzed.
