This is the second of two interrelated studies of waterborne transportation. The first study discussed transportation of mineral commodities on the inland waterways of the South-Central States.2 Together, the two surveys describe and analyze the flow of foreign and inland waterborne commerce of the gulf coast. All the principal mineral-industry imports and exports of the gulf coast are mentioned in the report, including metals, nonmetals, and mineral fuel products, The gulf coast foreign trade in mineral industry products was determined to be composed of a small number of commodities.

"INTRODUCTIONRio Algom's involvement with the Enviro-Clear thickener began in May 1975, when tests on a laboratory waif were carried out by our Research and Development group. Commencing in June, further tests were carried out using a 3 foot diameter pilot unit. By December, a 30 foot full-scale thickener had been installed. In the near future, 3 more Enviro-Clear thickeners will be commissioned. With in the space of a year, almost $2.5 million had been committed to liquid/ solid separation facilities using the Enviro-Clear thickener. This paper briefly traces the extent and development of this commitment.BRIEF HISTORY OF QUIRKEQuirke Mine started operating in September 1956 at a rated capacity of 3,000 TOD. Because of market conditions, Quirke was shut down in December 1960. The facilities were re-opened at an increased capacity of 4,000 TPD in July 1968, by which time the demand for uranium had returned. Also, a second shaft was sunk, and by 1970, all of the ore treated in the concentrator was coming from the new Quirke II mine. The Quirke I stopes were allowed to fill with natural seepage. As well, acidic barren solution from the concentrator was pumped underground.With increasing demand for uranium, the capacity of Quirke will be further expanded to 7,000 TPD by 1978. Studies of how this expansion could best he carried out led to the consideration of a fairly new piece of equipment, the Enviro-Clear thickener, for certain operations in the concentrator. Spokane Research Center personnel have been investigating the use of seismic tomography to monitor the behavior of a rock mass, detect hazardous ground conditions, and assess the mechanical integrity of a rock mass affected by mining. Seismic tomography can be a valuable tool for determining relative stress in deep ( > 1220 m) underground pillars. If high-stress areas are detected, they can be destressed prior to development or avoided. High-stress areas can be monitored with successive seismic surveys to determine if stress decreases to a level where development can be initiated safely. There are several benefits to using seismic tomography to identify high stress in deep underground pillars. The technique is reliable, cost-effective, efficient, and non-invasive. Also, investigators can monitor large rock masses, as well as monitor pillars during the mining cycle. By identifying areas of high stress, engineers will be able to assure that miners are working in a safer environment.

A simplified non-linear method to predict the behaviour of a single pile and/or pile group under horizontal loads is presented in the paper. The evaluation of the non-linear lateral deflection is based on a procedure taking into account the decrease of the model stiffness with the increasing of the applied load. The solution derived firstly for the single pile, was extended to the case of a pile group introducing the p-multiplier (fm) concept proposed by Brown et al. (1988).

The underwater test method for the determination of energy content of explosives is a very useful method. It’s also the only one which can separate shock and gas heave energies from each other. The total energy can be determined as a sum of these partial energies. Because of this special feature, the test method can be used to develop the energy content of explosives for different purposes; the military high explosives should contain more shock energy whereas the gas heave energy is a very important feature for the blasting explosives. The goal of this study was to find out the effects of aluminium and sodium perchlorate increments to the shock, gas heave and total energy values of an emulsion explosive and detect the particle size effects of two different aluminium powders to the total and partial energies as well. Both partial energies as well as the total energy were observed to increase linearly as a function of aluminium (A-80) concentration. The fine aluminium powder (A-100) (6%) also seemed to increase the shock energy of the explosive slightly whereas the gas heave energy was observed to remain unchanged to compared to the normally aluminazed (A-80) (6%) emulsion explosive. Therefore the fine aluminium powder also increased the total energy, but only very silightly. The fine aluminium powder can probably take apart to the chemical reactions more easily during the detonation. (3%) of sodium perchlorate (NaClO4) mixed with (6%) of (A-80) aluminium powdered emulsion explosive was observed to effect to the gas heave energy content of the explosive, but only very slightly. The shock energy was observed to remain unchanged.

The authors of this paper, in substituting values in a material balance equation associated with a gas reserve and a water drive, cannot find sustainment of what the gas in place should be; therefore, their conclusion is that this type of problem dealing with gas reservoirs is insoluble. They have introduced the word, "cybernetics," based on the work of Norbert Wiener, that further extends this line of reasoning, namely, to the effect that the system is a "black box", and that the gas reservoir and aquifer can take on infinite aspects 'based upon their past performance, to quote the authors. The inference is that this black box is an unknown. which permits in computer programming to subscribe as many variables as possible to observe by adjustment of one to another those combinations of conditions that fit field behavior. This may satisfy those in this discipline whose dedication is to programming, but to the others this is a comparison to the rationalization of the combinational results of the throwing of dice—a probability procedure. In reservoir engineering we are more direct. We learn from the examination of individual we'll and field data exactly what is in this black box. I now come to the impasse that has confronted these authors in their machine calculations. In this I have reproduced from their own production data (Tables 1 and 2 of their paper) pressure vs cumulative gas produced. shown as Figs. D-1 through D-5. A perusal of any of these five plots, for the corresponding fields in the Po Valley, shows the straight-line relation of pressure vs gas produced, evidencing pressure depletion. The point I make is that in their fundamental production data, there is no variance from a straight line that can support a water drive.

Reagents are added to the flotation process of Merensky Reef ores to achieve specific functions that enable the separation of valuable minerals from gangue minerals on the basis of the difference in their surface properties. However, due to the complexity of the process, the various interactions that occur as well as the incomplete liberation of the ore and range of minerals present, it is difficult to quantify the behaviour of each of the reagents. More specifically, changes made to achieve a particular outcome may have secondary effects that can override the desired effect. If all the effects and interactions can be accounted for, it is possible to manipulate reagent suites and obtain better overall metallurgical performance. This paper discusses the effect of the addition of copper sulphate at different operating points of the recovery of the sulphide minerals. Batch flotation tests indicated that the recovery of chalcopyrite was not affected when operating conditions were varied, whereas pentlandite recovery was strongly affected by the point of reagent addition, and pyrrhotite recovery was enhanced by copper sulphate addition, irrespective of the point of addition, with the extent being dependent on the ore source. Floatable gangue was activated by copper sulphate in the presence of the dithiophosphate collector. Froth stability was also affected by copper sulphate addition.

"Adsorption of heavy metal ions specifically, Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Cr(VI) from aqueous solution on synthetic 4A Zeolite was evaluated. The 4A zeolite was synthesized previously by dehydroxylation of low grade Kalabsha Kaolin at 800 °C, and reacted hydrothermally with 2-4 M NaOH solution at 100 °C for 2h. The adsorption capacity of the metal ions were found to be strongly dependent on pH and initial metal ion concentration. At the optimium conditions the adsorption capacity decreased in the order Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Mn(II) > Cr(VI) ions. Almost complete adsorption was achieved for both of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions at pH > 6, while the adsorption capacity for both Mn(II) and Cr(VI) was 96, and 55.3 % at pH 11 and pH 3, respectively. The results also showed that the grain size of the 4A zeolite has a little effect on the adsorption capacity. The experimental data was compared with two adsorption isotherms, Langmuir and Freundlich isotheroms. The results showed a good agreement of the Langmuir plots with the experimental data.1. Heavy metals are considered hazardous pollutants due to their toxicity, even at low concentration, and nonbiodegradability. Increasing level of heavy metals in natural water bodies poses a serious threat to all living species including humans. It is, therefore, essential to reduce the heavy metal concentration in effluents/wastewater before it is discharged into the water bodies [1]."

In this paper some failure phenomena observed in the crossing of brittle rock formations at the Lötschberg base tunnel are presented. A brittle failure criteria, recently developed by Canadian researchers, is applied through finite element calculations together with a semi-empirical failure criterion, to explain these behaviours. Good agreement is found between predicted and observed failures at the tunnel walls. This study also shows some of the limitations of this approach. Dans cet article sont présentés certains phénomènes de rupture observés durant la traversée de zones de roches fragiles lors de l’excavation du tunnel du Lötschberg. Un critère de rupture développé récemment par la recherche canadienne est utilisé à travers des calculs par éléments finis. En parallèle, les résultats sont comparés avec ceux d’un critère semi-empirique. Au niveau des parements, l’ampleur des ruptures observées est assez proche des résultats de calcul. Cette étude a également permis de mettre en avant certaines limites de l’approche choisie. In diesem Artikel werden verschiedene Brucharten dargestellt, die bei der Durchfahrung von sprödem Gestein im Rahmen des Ausbaus des Lötschberg-Basistunnels beobachtet wurden. Zur Erklärung des vorliegenden Verhaltens wurden die erst kürzlich in Kanada entwickelten Theorien zur Beschreibung von Sprödbrüchen herangezogen und bei der Berechnung mittels der Finite-Elemente-Methode und eines semi-empirischen Kriteriums angewendet. Die so vorhergesagten Versagenszonen an den Tunnelwänden stimmen mit den Beobachtungen gut überein. Die Studie hat auch dazu beigetragen, die bei der Anwendung des Lösungsansatzes angetroffenen Schwierigkeiten aufzuzeigen.

Accidental explosions in coal mines are due to various causes, but many of them can be directly attributed to coal dust; others that probably in no way depend on dust as a primary cause are propagated, greatly intensified, and made more disastrous by the presence of coal dust. The fact that coal dust in a bituminous mine will explode as a result of a fire-damp explosion has been generally accepted for many years, but the belief has also been held by many that coal dust is not in itself dangerous when unmixed with an explosive gas. Therefore, in past years little attention was given to dust in mines free from fire damp, and many disastrous explosions have resulted from lack of knowledge of the danger from coal dust. In the explosives gallery and experimental mine of the Bureau of Mines experiment station, Pittsburgh, Pa., it has been proved repeatedly and conclusively that coal dust will explode violently when no inflammable gas is present. PROPAGATION OF DUST EXPLOSIONS A coal-dust explosion is an extremely rapid burning or combustion of the coal particles. Their burning consists essentially of the combination of the hydrocarbons in the coal with the oxygen of the air, a process that generates heat and flame and produces hot gases and water vapor. These gases and vapors have a volume many times that of the original coal particles; thus they exert an outward motion and pressure which constitute the explosive wave. When fine particles of coal are suspended in the air, each particle is surrounded by the oxygen of the air, and thus is well placed to oxidize or burn rapidly whenever the temperature is high enough. If some particles are ignited from any cause they will fire others, and the combustion will extend from particle to particle with extreme rapidity wherever enough coal dust of sufficient purity is present.

When dealing with high velocity projectiles, the ability for researchers to accurately and precisely measure the velocity of the projectile is of great value. This report will analyze three different methods of recording high velocity projectiles for: their ability to record velocity data, pros and cons for each method, and any possible bias or limitations that would result. Method 1 uses a Phantom V10 high-speed video camera and a velocity reference screen to record the projectile’s path and proprietary Phantom software to analyze the data and determine velocity. Method 2 utilizes two break screens. This method, consisting of strung copper wire as the break material, is one that has been used in the past by Missouri University of Science and Technology (MS&T) researchers in assisting in finding velocities of high-speed projectiles. Method 3 is a pair of make screens, similar to Method 2 in that two screens were used for each test but relies on a projectile making a circuit between two sheets of metal separated by an insulation layer, to find a velocity. All three methods will be used simultaneously in each shot to rule out any projectile differences in subsequent shots. Projectiles of three different relative velocities, low, medium, and high, will be fired and analyzed to determine strengths and weaknesses of each method.

THE several studies concerned with the annealing of thin nickel films have largely been restricted to films of a single thickness.1-4 It is well-known, however, that both physical and mechanical properties depend upon film thickness.5, 6 The strength-thickness relations found in vapor-deposited nickel films in the annealed and as-deposited states, as an example, are at least partially due to the density and arrangement of imperfections within the films.7, 8 For these reasons, the annealing characteristics of thin nickel films as a function of thickness were investigated. Electrical resistance was chosen to monitor annealing behavior since resistance changes are partially dependent upon defect structure. In addition, the equations predicting film resistivity as a function of thickness are already available.9, 10 Further advantages afforded by electrical-resistance measurements are its adaption to continuous readings during annealing and its relative simplicity. Nickel films were vapor-deposited, at average rates of 60Å per sec, on Vycor substrates held at room temperature in vacuums of about 10-5 torr. Afterwards, deposition-thickness measurements were made using a multiple-beam interferometric technique. A more detailed description of deposition procedures and the interferometer appear elsewhere.7, 8 The four-probe method was employed in measuring electrical resistance since this technique measures film resistance without contributions from lead wires and contacts. Resistance measurements were made before, during, and after annealing to temperatures of 700°C under vacuums of approximately 10-4 torr. Measurements were made every 25°C or more often when necessitated by unusual resistance changes. Cooling and heating rates were maintained at approximately 5°C per min. "INTRODUCTION There is no doubt about the time and effort companies put in establishing and maintaining their equipment. However, the question about how these companies can map the benefits comes up. Neither do they have the tools to quantify the benefit of their action, nor do they have the tools to know the actual quality of their current maintenance system. The resources used in the process seem futile to observers. It seems impossible to trace improvements and to get information about the impact of actions in retrospect. Improvements in maintenance performance cannot be recognised by management or shareholders. Thus the necessity for measuring the performance of maintenance systems is given. In this paper ConMoto is systematically showing the strengths and weaknesses of many companies' maintenance management and is providing field-tested proven design elements for measuring maintenance systems and implementing Value Oriented Maintenance. Considering only business assets in production facilities and related machinery out of all investment goods in Europe, you reach a value of around 9.7 trillion euros in 2008. In Germany alone the equipment replacement value amounted to about 1.9 trillion euros [8,10,11,13]. If you calculate a cross sector maintenance costs rate of 4.8 % (corresponding to the average value identified in this study), direct maintenance costs in European production locations add up to over 450 billion euros per year [3]. These figures speak for themselves. Yet maintenance is not only of enormous significance for European enterprises. Our experiences show that maintenance and asset management, particularly sustainability issues, are also increasingly moving to the forefront in the BRIC states, in the Middle East and in many emerging countries. First of all, in order to meet the resulting high quality and cost related requirements of maintenance systems, a comprehensive overview of the issue is needed. This overview is provided by a detailed analysis of 83 companies and production plants from various sectors – with amazing results. SIGNIFICANCE OF MAINTENANCE Current studies show the high financial significance of maintenance and asset management. According to the market study in the Asset Manager [9], in industrialised countries about 10 to 15 per cent of the labour force are employed in maintenance and facility management tasks. In Europe about 40 to50 million people are directly and indirectly involved in retaining the value of machinery, plants, buildings, transport systems and infrastructure facilities. A glance at the costs side also demonstrates the great relevance of maintenance. EU-wide annual direct maintenance costs amount to a total of more than 1,500 billion euros. In Germany alone they are about 250 billion euros. This impressive total is considerably exceeded by indirect maintenance costs caused by technical failures. Indirect costs are estimated to be five times higher (Figure 1). [7,12,14]"

Namakwa Sands aims to conserve environmental resources and prevent or minimize environmental impacts from its operations. The challenge faced by Namakwa Sands is the rehabilitation of the arid winter rainfall Strandveld and lowland Succulent Karoo vegetation zones affected by its mining activities. Extensive experimentation with different rehabilitation methods resulted in the development of an effective rehabilitation programme. The use of topsoil as a seed bank and shade-cloth as windbreaks have significantly aided the rehabilitation process. The aim of the programme is to stabilize the soil environment so as to allow the germination and development of the local plant species. The ability to control wind erosion is critical to the success of the rehabilitation effort. A programme of biodiversity audits has been started to measure the recovery of plant species in the rehabilitated area. The principle of continuous improvement, coupled to site-specific rehabilitation studies, is applied to enhance the rehabilitation programme.

The paper presents results of a systematic study of synthesis of titanium oxycarbide and its chlorination. Titanium oxycarbide was produced by carbothermal reduction of titania in hydrogen, argon and helium. Formation of titanium oxycarbide started at 1200°C in all gases. The reduction was the fastest in hydrogen. Formation of titanium oxycarbide in hydrogen was close to completion in 120 min at 1300°C, 60 min at 1400°C and less than 30 min at 1500°C. Reduction in argon and helium progressed at a similar rate and reached 90-95% after 300 min at 1400-1500°C. The chlorination of titanium oxycarbide was ignited at 150-200°C. Chlorine partial pressure and gas flow rate strongly affected the chlorination rate. Chlorination of titanium oxycarbide produced with carbon to titania molar ratio 2.5 at 235-400°C was close to 100% in 30 min.

Fairmount Mineral's Maiden Rock underground sand mine historically delivered air to ventilate diesel-powered equipment at its working faces through high-resistance, 381-mm- (15-in.-) diameter PVC distribution lines. In support of plans for expanded production, three new, low-resistance ventilation design alternatives were analyzed. The study determined that adequate ventilation for expanded production was possible with various commercially available, high-volume/ low-pressure fans combined with a systematic layout of control structures. The recommended redesign was implemented in 2001, resulting in a significant increase in flow volumes and a noticeable improvement in the mine environment.

Due to the rapidly increasing production rates and deepening of mine working areas, there is a drastic rise in the number of thermal issues to be addressed for maintaining a safe mine environment. As high temperatures and humidity in underground mines could affect the health and performance of workers, and ultimately the production rate, it is necessary to provide a properly controlled safe environment. The backfilling of stopes in metal, non-metal mines results in different thermophysical properties for the hanging, side and foot walls, modeling of which is not provided by any existing mine climate simulation software. This paper presents the modeling of such a single stope using the MULTIFLUX (MF) software, developed at University of Nevada, Reno. A special case is presented in this paper, where a case study from the Homestake mine in the US with a drift and ramp connected to a stope with high Virgin Rock Temperature (VRT) and various spot heat sources is modeled in MULTIFLUX and CLIMSIM, and the results are compared against each other. Another case is presented in which the stope of the previous cases is modeled with walls, each having a different set of thermophysical properties. These results are compared with the former results to analyze the effect of anisotropic properties.
