The Explosive Destruction System (EDS) has been designed at Sandia National Laboratories for the disposal of chemical munitions (phosgene, mustard gas, sarin etc.), many dating back to World War I. EDS is a portable system that is trailer mounted and consists of a vessel into which a chemical munition can be loaded and opened for neutralization with linear and conical shaped charges. Gases are contained within the sealed chamber. The linear shaped charges split the munition in two and the conical shaped charge (CSC) is aimed at the explosive burster, in each munition, which is detonated by the resulting shaped charge jet, Toxic chemicals remaining in the vessel following detonation are neutralized and disposed of. This paper documents the development of a new CSC needed to reliably detonate explosive bursters in an expanding array of chemical munitions that are beyond what the EDS device was originally designed to eutralize. Design of this new CSC was controlled by the need to deliver energy above the detonation threshold into the explosive after penetrating the outer steel casing, fluid, the burster casing and finally the explosive. Design considerations were driven by jet conditions at the steel/explosive interface inside the burster. Parameters to consider in CSC design include: 1) diameter, 2) liner thickness, 3) liner position in body, 4) explosive weight, and 5) liner shape or interior (apex) angle. The effects of these parameters on final CSC performance are examined in detail. CSC’s that meet the design specifications have been manufactured and tested. The performance of these charges are compared with the original design requirements.

Australia produces approximately 84 million tonnes of coal per annum from 30 longwalls in New South Wales and Queensland, operating at an average depth of around 300m. Industry trends and expectations place increasing emphasis on the reliability of these operations; for example, the current average face width is 245m and this is expected to increase to approximately 270m by 2010. In recent years, Beltana No.1 Mine has consistently been Australia?s highest longwall producer, with ROM output of 7.2Mt in YEJ2007. Strata management has become a key feature of the operation of Australia?s longwall mines, as a tool to manage variances in the geotechnical environment. This involves an understanding of the impacts of the geotechnical environment on ground behaviour and the implications for mine design, stability and associated support, interaction and horizon selection. The anticipated ground control impacts of these factors form the assumptions that drive the format of plans specifying both triggers and actions, with quantified, monitoring-focussed experience used to refine the plan in a continuous improvement (ie ?plan-do-check-act?) process. This paper summarises the Beltana No.1 Mine strata management methodology and experience to-date.

Sonic travel time logging of exploration boreholes is routinely used in Australia to obtain estimates of coal mine roof rock strength. Because sonic velocity logs are relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain during exploration, the technique has provided Australian underground coal mines with an abundance of strength data for use in all aspects of ground control design. However, the technique depends upon reliable correlations between the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and the sonic velocity. This paper describes research recently conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) aimed at developing a correlation for use by the U.S. mining industry. At three coreholes in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and southern West Virginia, sonic velocity logs were compared with point load tests for a broad range of coal measure rock types. For the entire data set, the relationship between UCS and sonic travel time is expressed by the following equation, where UCS is in psi and t is the travel time of the P-wave in microsec/ft. UCS = 468,000 x e-0.054t (1) The r-squared value for this equation is 0.87, indicating that a strong correlation between sonic travel time and UCS can be achieved with this technique. The paper also addresses the steps that are necessary to ensure that high-quality sonic logs are obtained for use in estimating UCS.

The theory of probability with respect to the failure of structures is discussed. It is shown that the probability of safety, probability of failure, and factor of safety are directly related to each other and that as standard deviation approaches zero, the probability curves approach a unit step function which can be interpreted as the conventional factor of safety. The factor of safety is numerically the ratio of the load to the strength of the material at a particular point or plane in an engineering structure. Mathematically, it can be illustrated as a unit step function undefined at the point where the factor of safety is one (Fig. 1). The uncertainty of variation of soil and rock strengths require factors of safety much higher than those used in other engineering structures. The factors of safety used are generally determined from past experiences with similar structures. However, the factors thus determined do not have any theoretical meaning or do not indicate any relationship to actual safety.' It seems, therefore, logical to develop a system with a sound theoretical basis to obtain a more suitable factor of safety for structures. An application of elementary theory of probability indicates that it is possible to relate this number to theoretical and practical engineering facts.

Several common ratios used for determining spontaneous combustion activity rely on comparing the amount of various products of oxidation with the amount of oxygen consumed to produce these products. As coal gets hotter, oxidation reactions become more efficient meaning more products produced for less oxygen consumed. There are many problems associated with accurately determining the true amount of oxygen used. These problems relate to the monitoring technique (and its associated uncertainties) used to generate the results, deficiencies in the established equations utilized in calculations, dilution with other gases and other sources of oxygen depletion. Typically the oxygen deficiency is over estimated, resulting in the under estimation of the indicating ratio. For this reason the use of ?one off? calculations to determine the status of the underground environment is not recommended. Instead trends of these ratios should be used to identify increases which indicate an increase in oxidation intensity. This paper outlines problems associated with the monitoring techniques and equations used to determine the oxygen deficiency.

"The oxidative leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions has been evaluated using electro-analytical techniques. The anodic dissolution process has been established to be a seven-electron transfer process under nitrogen in ammonia–ammonium sulphate solutions and ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. The number of electrons transferred in the carbonate and sulphate salts suggests that the sulphur is oxidised to a thiosulphate intermediate and the copper and iron released as Cu+ and Fe2+. The Cu+ and Fe2+ is subsequently oxidised in solution in non-Faradaic reactions. The deportment of Fe2+ and S2O32- is affected by choice of the ammonium salt used in the leaching process. In the perchlorate salt, only five electrons are transferred, however observations made on the mineral surface after leaching do not support the formation of elemental sulphur. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis of the mineral surface suggest presence of an iron–sulphur surface layer completely free of copper under the ammonia–ammonium sulphate conditions, an iron-rich surface layer under ammonia–ammonium perchlorate solutions and absence of surface layer build up under ammonia–ammonium carbonate solutions. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for copper extraction provide a viable route to recover the metal from mixed and low-grade ores, as well as overcome the environmental challenges faced by the traditional pyrometallurgical processes. Chalcopyrite is not only the most abundant of the copper sulphides, but also the most stable, making it recalcitrant to hydrometallurgical processes. Hence, hydrometallurgical processing of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research due to the vaguely understood surface chemistry of the mineral in different aqueous media. Different approaches to hydrometallurgical treatment of chalcopyrite can be carried out. These include thermal treatment prior to leaching, direct leaching and direct electrochemical leaching (Venkatachalam, 1991). Direct leaching of chalcopyrite can be carried out in various solution systems, as reviewed by Roman and Benner (1973) and Venkatachalam (1991). Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants that form stable amine complexes with some base-metal cations while rejecting iron. Leaching of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of an oxidant is possible due to the stabilisation of copper(I) and copper (II) by ammonia at elevated pH levels. In oxygenated ammonia solutions, it has been suggested that chalcopyrite dissolves according to Equation 1 (Beckstead & Miller, 1977a):"

This chapter deals with the systems of laws by which governments regulate the exploration for and production of the minerals within their jurisdictions. It is a summary, restricted by necessary space limitations, of material assembled by the author for a forthcoming publication of the United States Bureau of Mines, "Summary of Mining and Petroleum Laws of the World." (Information Circular, 1959.) The present study is organized in three parts, dealing with (1) the historical background of these legal systems, (2) laws of the United States, and (3) laws of other countries of the world. The reader's attention is invited to the acknowledgments at the end of the chapter, which inadequately express the appreciation due those who have assisted in the collection of this material. Part I. Historical Development of Major Western Systems of Land Tenancy with Respect to the Ownership and Control of Minerals The use of metals in primitive societies was largely confined to the manufacture of weapons for self-preservation. The ruler's control over copper, then brass, then iron, was essential to maintenance of his own ascendancy at home and his group's position against neighbors who had access to similar metals. Ancient societies were thus characterized by the ruling group's ownership of minerals and metals. The Egyptian civilization, which emerged in the fourth millenium B.C. upon the agricultural subjugation of the lower valley of the Nile, was responsible for extensive development of the upper valley as a source of mineral wealth. The production of gold during the height of that civilization has been estimated at $30,000,000 per year, thus equaling the early placers of California and Australia. The mines of Egypt were the property of the Pharaohs and were controlled at their direction. Greek mining developed a different scheme of land tenancy which more closely resembled modem concepts. The studies herein reported were begun as a part of researches undertaken by the United States Geologü;al Survey looking to the more effcient utilization of the coal in the United States through the reduction of waste in its extnidion, and were continued as part of further researches having regard to the conservation of the fuel resources of this country and to the lessening of injuries and fatalities in coal mining. Among other phases of the general problem to be studied were the origin of the gas whidi escapes into coal mines, its modes of occurrence in the coal and rock strata, and the conditions governing its outflow into the mines. The subject of relative danger from destructive explosions due to gas and coal dust in different mines belonging to different coal fields was to be one of the principal lines of investigation. But this work was barely under way when the series of unusually disastrous explosions in the Naomi, .Monongah, and Darr mines of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, in December, 1907, afforded an exceptional occasion to observe the behavior of explosions on a large scale. Because of the opportunities for study afforded by these terrific explosions, the inquiry originally planned was d ¡verted to the more specific investigation of the conditions in tl10SC mines, and the examinations have been directed toward finding those qualities of gas and dust which were concerned in these explosions. The following discussion, therefore, consists essentially of a report on that subject; but it is far from being exhaustive, and is to be regarded as a preliminary outline of investigations which are still in progress. The first of the three mine explosions mentioned occurred in the Naomi mine of the United Coal Company, near Bellevernon, Pa., on Sunday, December 1, at 7.40 p. m. All the men who were within the mine at the time, fortunately only 34, were killed. Less than a week later there occurred in mines Nos. fì and 8 of the Fairmont Coal Company at Monongah, W. Va., the most disastrous mine explosion yet recorded in the annals of American mining. The mines were comparatively new and well laid out. Mine No.8 had been in operation only about two years and was the pride of the Fairmont Coal Company. Mine No.6 was first opened ahout four years earlier. In order to make it possible, in case of emergency, for either mine to be ventilated by the ventilating system of the other, the two sets of workings were connected underground. The F face heading of mine K o. 6 led direetly into No.2 north heading of No.8 mine. On Friday, Dcccmber 6, at about 10.30 in the morning, an explosion of unusual violcnce swept completely through both mines, pursuing its course throughout the numerous ramifications and bursting out of the two pit mouths, located It miles apart, nearly simultaneously. The slope of mine No.6 was only slightly damaged, but at the mouth of No.8 the destruction was very great. The fan was wrecked, the engine house was demolished, and mine timbers were blown across Monongahela River: As nearly as can be determined, 361 men were killed in the two mines by the explosion. .While the inspection of the Monongah mines was still in progress, on Thursday morning, December 19, at about 11.20, a similar explosion wrecked the Darr mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Company ut Jacobs Creek, Pu.; 238 men lost their lives in this explosion, which in number of casualties is second only to the :Monongah disustcr in the history of American mining. Of ull thc men in the mine at the , time of the explosion, only one mun, who happened to be within 100 feet of the ~iUrface on an old manway in a wet, unexploded portion of the mine, succeeded in escaping alive. The underground investigation of these mines was made in cooperation with Clarence Hall and ""Valter O. Snelling, of the United States Geological Survey, and James ""V. Paul, now of the Survey but at that time chief of the department of mines for vVest Virginia, to all of whom the author is greatly indebted for valuable assistance, suggestions, and advice. Mr. Paul will rcport on the nature of these explosions, the precipitating causes, their destructiveness, and the general cüliditions in these mines following the disasters. The present report is confined essentially to the laboratory examination of some of the explosive materials collected from these mines directly ufter the explosions.

"Industrial use of abrasive stress takes place in the area of fine grinding and in order to clean surface contaminated soil particles. Also, at many mechanical operations abrasion emerge as an unintended side effect. At the Institute for Raw and Waste Material Processing at the Technical University of Berlin systematic investigations are carried out, to further the knowledge regarding the dependence of abrasion process on material properties and stress mechanisms as a basis for design and optimisation of the process or for its avoidance. Aim was the mathematical description of the abrasion process running with a single particle stress. For the purpose of investigations an agitation cell was used. Limestone served as material.In the presented work the influence of particle diameter, particle shape and collision energy on the mass and particle size distribution of abrasion debris was studied. The surface geometry of the particle was characterised by the particle shape factor ?x and the particle diameter dp. The particle shape factor ?x stays in direct relation with the abrasion degree x, and can be substituted by a mathematical function of x.Physically the particle shape factor ?x can be interpreted as a proportion of abrasive stresses splitting up complete crystals and crystal fragments. These two different mechanisms depend on different ratios of curvature of the surface of the stressed particle. The abrasive stress of strongly curved surface areas leads to separation of complete crystals. The abrasive stress of weakly curved surface areas leads to separation of crystals fragments. Accordingly the mass of wear mAb and median diameter of the abrasion debris d50 are different. The derived mathematical relations consider this behaviour by the particle shape factor ?x , which represents the ratio of the mixture of both stress mechanisms. The dependence of the particle shape factor ?x on the abrasion degree x with an exponent approximately to 2/3 points out that the particle shape factor ?x represents a surface area relation."

"A gold has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution and several leaching conditions have been studied. The leached solution has been recovered by solvent extraction and the optimum conditions have been investigated.SUMMARYIn this investigation, a sponge gold sample (99.92% pure) has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution. The effects of CuSO4, (NH4)2S2O3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4OH and retention time on the gold leaching % (extraction %) and thiosulfate oxidation % (consumption %) have been studied. The copper ion acts as a catalyst in gold dissolution. On the other hand, it also accelerates oxidation of thiosulfate (consumption). It was found in this study that the best gold extraction condition was obtained at 43.2 ks with 0.8 – 1.0x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2S2O3, 30 mol/m3 CuSO4, 2.0 – 3.0x103 mol/m3 NH4OH, 0.4 – 0.5x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2SO4, pH 10±0.2 and 150 rpm. The thiosulfate oxidation was about 15% of the initial concentration."

One of the more difficult topics to address concerns the effects of vibration on historic structures. Not only blast induced vibration, but also vibration from other transient and semi-continuous sources like, traffic, human activity, and environment forces. A common question might be, “What level of blast-re l a ted PPV is considered safe?” A review of some of the papers available from the ISEE Explosives Reference Database on CD ROM shows that 0.50 inch per second was often used. It was not clear on what basis this value was selected except that it represents the low frequency limit for plaster developed by the United States Bureau of Mines in RI 8507. In another case, a limit of 0.20 inch per second was mentioned, apparently simply because it was ten times less than 2.00 inches per second.

"The flotation circuit of the Sarcheshmeh copper mine, which processes 40,000 t/d of ore at 0.9% Cu, consists of rougher, cleaning and recleaning stages. Mechanical flotation cells are used in all stages. To investigate the amenability of flotation columns in the plant especially for cleaning and recleaning stages, a column was designed, constructed, and installed at the Sarcheshmeh pilot plant. The pilot plant, which has an identical circuit configuration compared to the plant, can process up to 2 t/h of ore. The overall rate constant of the ore along with the target recovery of 94% were used to size the column. A 26 cm by 550 cm column with two filter cloth spargers and a submerged froth washing system using perforated tubes was constructed. To detect the interface level a 180 cm conductivity probe consisting of 1.5 cm diameter ring electrodes was installed. The tailings flowrate controlled by a variable speed pump was used as the main control variable. The initial testing program revealed that the optimum superficial gas and wash water flowrate were 1.5 and 0.3 cds, respectively. It was observed that the cleaning stage grade when using the column could increase by 2-3% at constant overall copper recovery.IntroductionThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body which may rank as third or fourth largest in the world contains 1 billion tomes averaging 0.90 % copper and 0.03 % molybdenum. It is in located south-east Iran and has been processing 40,000 t/d of ore since 1982. After three stages of crushing, the ore with a F80 of 12.7 mm is fed to 8 parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70% finer than 75 microns. The concentrate of the first stage of flotation is reground and the tailings constitutes the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31% Cu (chalcopyrite and chalcocite) is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages in mechanical cells. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83-87 % depending on ore type and operating conditions."

In 1994 the world's largest underwater tunnel was constructed to link Canada and the U.S.A. This new tunnel was large enough to accommodate double-decker railway cars. The construction of an unplanned Retrieval Shaft was required to allow removal and servicing of the Cutterhead of the Tunnel Boring Machine before it passed under the St. Clair River. This paper, which is a revision of that published in Canadian Tunnelling, has been modified here to emphasize construction considerations and describes the evolution of the design and construction of this "Rescue Shaft" under extreme schedule pressure, and changed ground conditions..

A new hyperbolic model for generating P-Y curves is developed for use in lateral analyses of cemented soils (a ?C-F? soil with both cohesive intercept and friction angle), and includes degradation of the static loading soil response to model the effects of load cycling (repeated loading) with load cycle number. The p-y curves, for both static and cyclic loading, were derived from full-scale lateral test results conducted on a set of six drilled shafts in a loess deposit at the Kansas DOT test site. Values of the model parameters obtained from the load testing at this site are presented, as well as a discussion of the model parameters effect on the results such that the model may be rationally applied to other sites with C-F type soils. A step-by-step procedure is presented to illustrate the application of the model. Correlation of the model to the CPT cone tip resistance (qc) from CPT testing is made, as this was found to be the most reliable; However, the model is applicable to other methods, both in-situ and laboratory, of assessing the soils strength.

Current analytical models can accurately predict the final velocity of explosively driven flyers and can somewhat predict the acceleration profile, but do little to address the deformation of the flyers. Explosive systems such as linear shaped charges and explosively formed projectiles, which can be described as multiple interacting explosively driven flyers, often involve interactions between the flyers that occur much before the flyers reach their predicted final velocity. In this regime, it is important to accurately understand both the acceleration profile and the deformation profile of the flyers, as both significantly affect the functioning of the explosive systems. Previous work proposed an analytical model to meet this need. As the expanding gas cloud of detonation products drives the flyers, rarefactions impinge upon the gas cloud from around the flyer edges, which produces a pressure difference across the back face of the flyer leading to deformation of the flyer. Previous research condensed the effects of the rarefactions into a single term, the pressure release ratio, ?, which was calculated based on hydrocode simulations of a block of explosive only and an assumption of isentropic expansion. This work intends to determine the value of ? for different explosive compounds. The results of this analysis were compared to hydrocode simulations of an open-faced sandwich configuration explosive/flyer system with an average accuracy of 15% across the tested compounds.

"This paper provides a critical review of the development and application of advanced controls in mineral processing at the industrial level. These algorithms can be sub-divided into four broad categories: Kalman filter, self-tuning, extended horizon, and knowledge based or expert systems. Applications from each category are described outlining the benefits derived, the relative advantages of that particular controller, and potential limitations of the controller which may inhibit their more widespread application. The paper will conclude with a description of control algorithms which are currently in the rudimentary design stage, but may hold tremendous potential for mineral processing control systems in the next decade. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian mining industry has a large installed milling base and many plants are run with manual or low level automatic process control. The competitive pressures imposed by the market will not allow these operations to ignore the significant increase in efficiency that can be achieved through the effective application of advanced process control. These improvements will come in the form of better quality, higher productivity and reduced costs.There have been quite a number of reports of successful applications of advanced control in mineral processing applications. As this trend continues, and more of the work is documented, the technology will be more effectively transferred to process and control engineers. It is the authors' opinion that the most difficult problems facing process control are not really technical in nature. Rather, they lie more in process control education. This extends from management, through engineering to the operators.The purpose of this paper is to provide a tutorial type overview of some of the more frequently encountered advanced control algorithms. The assumption is that the reader has a superficial knowledge of this technology. In the discussions which follow, several techniques are explored within the framework of simple process examples. Industrial examples are cited for each and an evaluation of the expected longer term potential is given."

Authorities that regulate environmental issues pertaining to industrial wastes in South Africa regard landfill disposal as the only effective environmental management option for slag and other inorganic by-products from the ferro-alloy industry. Metallurgical slags are widely utilised in civil engineering and construction applications in other countries in the world and in line with the overall philosophy of conserving mineral and other natural resources, these materials should be assessed for the possibility of resource recovery, recycling, reclamation, direct re-use or alternative uses. This presentation describes a risk-based approach for the assessment of by-products from the ferro-alloy industry for alternative use. Once a by-product from an industrial process has been identified for alternative use, its intended use would be defined, but it will not be possible to control its actual use or misuse in society, nor will it be possible to control its fate during the application life cycle. In the interest of protection of human health and the environment, potential risks associated with the handling and uses of a material throughout its life cycle therefore have to be quantified. The assessment has to include both human health and ecological risks and must cover the entire life cycle of a product, from its production up to its end-of-life disposal. The presentation introduces the concept of tiered risk assessment and demonstrates how this applies in the overall assessment of by-products from metallurgical industry sector for safe use in society.

Lower Miocene Maryville Coal Measures at Waitewhena Coalfield, in the Taranaki coal region, include seams of sub-bituminous coal up to 4 m thick. During coalfield exploration Fletcher Challenge Ltd drilled ten cored holes, all of which encountered at least one seam. Coal quality is variable. Ash ranges from six to 12 per cent and sulphur from 0.5 to three per cent. A basal seam, overlying the Lower Mokau Sandstone, appears to extend throughout the area under investigation. A rider seam, of variable thickness, closely overlies the main seam in most drillholes. The rider converges with the main seam to the north and vertical trends in coal properties suggest that the seams are united in some locations. A less extensive seam sometimes occurs at the top of the coal measures beneath the Upper Mokau Sandstone. The lithostratigraphy of the intervening coal measures is complex, and coexistence of fluviodeltaic, lagoonal/lacustrine, and marine depositional environments is provisionally inferred. Lateral variations in coal properties (clastic derived ash, volatile matter, inertinite, hydrogen), thickness of the sedimentary parting between the basal seam and rider, texture of the coal measure sediments, and distribution of the upper seam all indicate persistence of a relatively low lying northeast-trending zone which may have been structurally controlled. Available data indicate that coal measure accumulation was terminated by marine transgression from north to south.

During the initial portion of the contract several alternative designs were considered, as set out step by step in the monthly reports. The conclusions reached during this period were - to use on INTERDATA Model 70 as the system minicomputer - to drop the idea of multiplexing and digitizing the inclinometer outputs downhole due to the greater complexity and cost that that alternative would imply - to use a multitasking software monitor to enable synchronization of the several tasks that the system would have to perform simultaneously - to use a common controller for all I/0 devices except those which were available off the shelf from Interdata - to use a sheave counter to meter off equal increments of probe travel, but to supplement this information with the use of an encoder on the winch drum in order to be able to measure total probe travel unambiguously. - to place all I10 device interfaces in a bin connected to the common controller. During this period considerable attention was dedicated to the design of the mechanical components contemplated it the original contract. Of these, only those required for vertical probe was complete at the time that it was decided to forego the mechanical subsystem and concentrate on developing the necessary electronics and software to interface with the probes being developed by the Bureau of Mines.
