"The Aurora North mine has been operating for more than ten years, and is the source of over half of Syncrude’s bitumen production. In order to minimize front-end rejects, and to allow for high throughput, the ore top size at Aurora has been set at a nominal 125 mm. These relatively large lumps have a significant effect on both pump performance and pipeline pressure gradient. Current design methods underestimate the solids de-rating effect of lumpy slurries in pumps, and do not accurately describe the distribution or magnitude of the lump effect on pipeline pressure gradient. Data from the Aurora hydrotransport systems has been compiled, to quantify the effect of lumps on the pump head ratio and pipeline pressure gradient, and how this effect changes as lump ablation occurs along the length of the pipeline. A model has been built, using a logarithmic curve, which predicts the effect of 125 mm lumps on pipeline pressure gradient as a function of velocity and the distance from the start of a hydrotransport pipeline. This model is applicable only to Aurora hydrotransport operation, but similar models could be developed for other operations using the same methods. Using accurate pipeline pressure gradients and pump head ratios when designing future hydrotransport pipeline systems will help improve their reliability and operability."

"IRON ORE was first smelted in Canada about the year 1736 at Les Forges, Quebec -a most appropriate name for such a historic locale. During these early years of the 18th, 19th, and first quarter of this century, about six million tons of ore were mined and employed in the manufacture of items ranging all the way from kettles, stoves, and cannon for the early settlers to weapons of war for the allied armies of World War I.But this symposium on iron ore is not concerned with this early period. Instead, it is concerned with the iron ore industry of today -an industry which will soon be-come one of the two most valuable mineral industries in Canada.The subject in its broad geographic and economic aspects will be introduced by Mr. Buck; Dr. Harrison will describe the geology and origin of the principal iron ore deposits; Dr. Downes will go into beneficiation as it applies to iron ores; and Mr. Gertsman will discuss primary processing. The symposium will not deal with the steel end of the industry, because that phase itself could well form the subject of a symposium."

Over the past decade the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry?s injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked, injury rate, and days lost. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992?2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. However, the industry-wide data indicates that contractor and operator injury rates have converged since 2005 and are now equivalent.

High Pressure Water Jet Assisted Tunneling The high pressure water jet assisted tunneling project was conducted in a granite quarry near Skykomish, Washington, approximately 90 miles east of Seattle. A 7-ft diam tunnel boring machine was modified and equipped with high pressure water jets. The concept that tunneling rates can be improved by using high pressure water jets was validated, with an average increased advance rate of 50% to 60%. For some tests, the advance rate was more than doubled. A comprehensive economic analysis has shown that very significant savings are possible. At a 50% increase in advance rate, cost savings of 14% and 24% were projected for 10-ft and 20-ft diam tunnels respectively. These benefits were seen to be relatively insensitive to water jet equipment costs.

There is currently a worldwide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow characteristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for determining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0.0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦C - 319¦C. Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physicochemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage. Apparent viscosity increased sharply with increase in solids concentration and suspensions at higher concentration behaved as non Newtonian liquids. Viscosity decreased with increase in temperature; rate of decrease slowed down with increase in temperature.

In attempting the predict coal cleat orientation in the subsurface for effective methane degasification of the coal beds in the Warrior coal field of Alabama, approximately 150 rock joint orientations and 45 coal cleat orientations were measured in each of 37 7 ½ minute quadrangles in Tuscaloosa, Walker, Jefferson, Fayette, Winston, Blount, and Bibb Counties. Data from these surface locations, and coal cleat data from eight underground mines was corrected for magnetic declination and titled beds rotated to the horizontal where necessary and plotted on rose diagrams for comparative analysis. Data collected on each joint and cleat consisted of attitude, quality, type, spacing, persistence, lithology, bedding thickness, surface texture, and filling. File data and published and unpublished reports from the State Survey and the State Mine Inspector's Office were re-viewed. Twenty-seven mining companies, most of which supplied information pertinant to the project were also contacted. The information obtained consisted of crop line information structure, and underground mine outlines, all of which were put on 7 ½ -minute topographic quadrangles. LANDSAT-1 imagery and Skylab photography were compared to dominant joint and cleat trends in the study area. Detailed results can be found in an open-file report entitled "Fracture Analyses in a Selected Area of the Warrior Coal Field, Alabama." A master's thesis entitled "The Relationship Between Surface Joints and Subsurface Structure in a Selected Area of the Warrior Coal Field" is being prepared to illustrate the relation-ship of the fracture system to the structure in the Warrior coal field. A proposal has been submitted for research on a project entitled "Rock Fracture Systems and Their Affects on the Extraction of Fossil Fuels in the Warrior Basin, Alabama"

As part of an effort to establish the extent of the domestic chromium supply that could be exploited in case of adverse changes in international chromium production and trading patterns, a two-part study was conducted for the Bureau of Mines, to assess the domestic availability of critical metals in scrap containing significant amounts of chromium. This report describes the part of the study that deals with wrought stainless steels and heat-resisting alloys. Data were collected on types of scrap, sources, quantities, and ultimate disposition, leading to the conclusion that In 1917 about 62,000 tons of contained chromium was unrecycled. Unrecovered obsolete stainless steel scrap accounts for most of these uncollected chromium values. Error margins in the amount of uncollected scrap are estimated to be 10 to 20 percent.

Long, high capacity, highly tensioned, cable bolts (strand bolts), stiff enough to be installed with resin like a solid bolt, yet flexible enough to be used in any lengths, have been widely used in Australian coal mines since the early 1990?s. A brief history and update on recent developments of this technology is provided. The first major US trial of this Australian technology, has recently taken place at BHP Billiton?s San Juan longwall coal mine in New Mexico. Thirty-five foot long, high capacity, highly tensioned, post-grouted cable bolts are being used to provide active secondary support of intersections in areas where operator safety and life of mine considerations are paramount, and standing support cannot be installed for reasons of equipment access. The cable bolts are resin anchored into overlying sandstone channels, tensioned, and post-grouted. The installation procedure and support results for these highly tensioned cable bolts are given.

Western Australia (WA), alongside Brazil, has remained at the forefront of the global seaborne traded iron ore market for over 40 years. Despite this apparent stability and strong market position, WA continues to face strong external international supply-side competition, mainly from Brazil, but also periodically from often marginal, non-traditional sources of iron ore. Additionally, WA iron ore supply has undergone significant decadal change internally, both of an evolutionary (brownfields expansion) and revolutionary nature (major new greenfields projects). Since 2006, a new generation of WA-focused iron ore explorers, developers and producers have emerged.The majors, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, have expanded mine production to record levels and the Roy Hill project is now approaching nameplate capacity. Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) is, however, the largest new market entrant of the last decade, delivering upon their vision of becoming the ‘new force in iron ore’. Unlike most of the other new WA market entrants, FMG’s operations are substantive. Most of the other smaller, new WA iron ore miners have struggled during the period of falling prices, though it is worth noting that collectively they have made a material supply-side impact during the price boom – typical of marginal supply. Finally there have been some contributions from new magnetite projects, however, the delivery and economics of these projects have not met expectations.In this paper, we touch briefly upon the key global market changes of the last decade, namely China-driven demand growth and the changes to the pricing mechanisms for iron ores – before reviewing the rise in WA iron ore supply in response to these markets. We finish by focusing on the most significant WA-focused supply-side development of the last decade, the rise of FMG as a major new supplier and the strategic situation that facilitated its rise. The unprecedented China-led rise in iron ore prices felled many traditional barriers to market entry into an oligopolistic industry, allowing many new market entrants (in WA and around the world). However, the downturn in iron ore prices resurrected these barriers to entry, with only FMG (thus far) breaking the entry barrier with significant scale. Difficult corporate decisions have been forced upon the smaller WA iron ore miners who, in some cases, will now struggle to further expand, or indeed continue to operate in the longer run.The changes that have taken place over the last decade of WA iron ore production hold insights for other emergent mineral commodity exports from the state. Successful market entry, even when industry barriers are high, does not always require an immediate low-cost production assumption alongside a strong balance sheet. FMG could see a new market, within an established commodity market, target an appropriate and new product at it, overcome temporarily-felled barriers to entry in infrastructure and finance, then innovate and aggressively cut costs ensuring it was behind the barriers to entry when they rose again after the price boom.CITATION:Barrere, L, Trench, A, Sykes, J P and Davies, R S, 2017. To improve communications between mine workings and surface locations during emergency situations and for administrative purposes. The Approach: Development of a device for interconnecting phone systems which permits two-way communication between a public telephone and a mine pagerphone by authorized personnel. How It Works: The system, developed by personnel at the Bureau's Pittsburgh (Pa.) Mining and Safety Research Center, makes connections between the public phone line and mine pagerphone line. As shown in Fig. 1., incoming calls are sensed by the ring detector (4) and the system "answers" the call electronically. To reach the pagerphone system, the caller inserts an audible tone of fixed frequency through the microphone of his telephone. This tone is produced by a miniature, pocket-carried tone generator and is detected by a tone recognition circuit (5). When this hap-pens, relay, switching, and logic circuitry (6) closes the connections between the two phone systems. Simultaneously, a page activator (9) places a DC paging voltage on the mine phone line.

The proliferations of media sources and non-profits organizations in Ghana have put the negative impacts of mining on the ?spot?; this has resulted in public outcry about mining. Although, the gold mining industry has responded by implementing several voluntary measures to ensure sustainable mineral development, these critics label such measures as ?green wash?. In this study, a content analysis of newspaper articles of the Ghana Web Database was carried out after the collection of a total of approximately 900 newspaper articles from it. The data were statistically analyzed to chronologically examine the main media view points and the changing perception of mining issues as reported by private and public media. The results showed government, mining industry (Gold), illegal miners and non-profit & community groups as the main media view points and total of twenty-eight related gold mining sustainability issues. The findings of this study could be used by the gold mining companies to improve upon the communications of their unknown sustainable mineral development measures and to design effective communications and education programs for the public.

"Impala Platinum Limited is the world’s second largest platinum producer, producing more than 1.7 million ounces of the precious metal last year, much of this from the UG-2 reef located in the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. As part of Impala’s ongoing expansion programme, tonnage through their principal UG-2 processing facility, near Rustenburg, was increased 40% in 2001.To accommodate the increased throughput, the role of the existing primary mills was converted from conventional semi-autogenous grinding units, to attrition and selective grinding units, operating in fully autogenous mode. The finer chromite and coarser silicate components in the mill discharge are then separated by screening and processed in dedicated circuits downstream. This way, the need to spend considerable capital to increase primary grinding capacity was averted.In the last year, considerable work has been conducted to evaluate and optimise the two downstream circuits. This has involved an optimisation programme of sampling and diagnostic flotation testing, supported with QemSCAN analysis. This paper will describe the operation of the new circuit. It will also describe some of the more novel aspects and interesting findings from the optimisation programme.INTRODUCTIONThe South African platinum industry is the world’s largest producer of platinum and the world’s second largest producer of palladium. Located in a wide area north of Johannesburg, the industry mines ores from the Bushveld Complex, one of the world’s great mineral treasure chests, containing over 70 percent of the world’s platinum, as well as extensive reserves of the other PGE (platinum group elements), chrome, manganese and vanadium. The industry employs about 180,000 people in, predominantly, underground mines, which together form an almost unbroken circle of mining operations 200 km in diameter."

"A series of tests was carried out on a dry blend of PPAN and LAN prills (LANFO). The objective of thetests was to determine detonation stability and VOD performance compared to ANFO. Heave andfragmentation results in the field were also evaluated visually. A number of factors were behind for.mulating this blend. A lower cost is combined with higher in-hole energies, but at slower reactionrates and lower peak borehole pressures. The resultant effect is improved heave characteristics andlower energy losses caused by inefficient crushing of the rock immediately around the borehole.The test results indicate that IANFO is ideally suited to blasting in softer midburden and overburdenrock types often encountered in coal strip mines."

Filtration is an important solid liquid separation technology employed widely in the mineral processing industries. The effectiveness of the filtration operation can be influenced by numerous variables, related to the particulate phase, the slurry rheology and the equipment. The classical approach for analysis is based on Darcy's law. Knowledge of the cake poremicro structure and its correlation to macroscopic cake properties is required to model the filtration operation from a fundamental point of view. Since cake formation seems to occur randomly, a 3D Monte Carlo method was used to simulate cake formation. The configuration for simulation was a space with width of 500 m, length of 500 m and height of 4000 m. Size distributions of five different industrial products whose particle size distributions follow the Rosin Rammler distribution function were used. The particle shape was assumed to be spherical. The simulated cake structures were described in terms of volume porosity (volume of pore space per unit volume of cake) and surface porosity (area of pore space per unit area of a cross section). The results indicate: 1) it is possible to simulate 3D packing, which mimics cake structure, using the Monte Carlo method,2) segregation phenomena occurs during simulated cake formation, 3) the values of calculated porosity for simulated samples B, C, D, and E were lower than those determined for corresponding industrial products Br, Cr, Dr, and Er, and 4)some structures of simulated samples seem to correlate with laboratory leaf test data obtained for different products from plant operations.

In attempts to correlate mechanical properties with microstructure, it is desirable to determine the effect of ß grain size. Determination of 6 grain size is not a problem where a has precipitated at ß grain boundaries. However, in alloys which have been processed to produce an equiaxed a +ß structure the ß grain size is difficult to determine because ß grain boundaries do not etch. The ß grain size can sometimes be laboriously determined by searching for grains which have some a! outlining the 6 grains. This difficulty of ß grain size determination in equiaxed a + ß alloys can be overcome by heating below the ß transus temperature for a short time and water quenching. Fig. 1 shows the starting equiaxed a + ß structure of the Ti-5.25A1-5.5V-0.9Fe-0.5Cu alloy used in this investigation, and Fig. 2 shows the microstructure of the same sample water-quenched after heating 1 min at 1675"F, which is 25°F below the 0 transus. Reduction of Groote Eylandt (Australia) and Wessels (South Africa) manganese ores using CH4-H2-Ar gas mixture was investigated in a fixed bed laboratory reactor in the temperature range 1000?1200oC. The extent and kinetics of manganese ore reduction as a function of gas composition and temperature were determined by on-line off-gas analysis using mass-spectrometer and dew point sensor. Morphology of ores and its change in the course of reduction was examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Phases of raw materials and reduced samples were analysed by XRD and EPMA. Manganese oxides were reduced to carbide Mn7C3. High extent and rate of reduction by methane-containing gas in comparison with carbothermal reduction were attributed to high carbon activity in the reducing gas, which was in the range 15 - 50 (relative to graphite). The reduction rate of Wessels manganese ore increased with increasing temperature. Reduction rate and extent of Groote Eylandt manganese ore achieved maximum at 1050oC. The decrease in rate and extent of reduction of Groote Eylandt ore at higher temperatures, particularly at 1150-1200oC, was due to sintering and formation of semi-liquid silicate slag. The optimum conditions for the reduction of manganese ores were established as follows: a) temperature: 1150-1200oC for Wessels and 1050-1100oC for Groote Eylandt ores, b) methane concentration: 10-15 vol%, c) hydrogen concentration: above 30 vol%, (d) size: 1-3 mm. An addition of lime (10-15 wt% CaO) to the Groote Eylandt manganese ore increased melting temperature of slag and significantly increased the rate and extent of reduction at elevated temperatures.

Elemental sulfur and volatilization kiln slag(VKS)containing heavy-metal produced by smelter factories were used to produce sulfured building material. The effects of heating mode, material proportion (MSulfur:MVKS), size of waste particles and ratio of aggregate to filler(A/F) on the mechanical properties and leaching toxicities of solidified stuff were investigated. The optimal conditions for the solidification are stepped heating mode, 3:7 ratio of MSulfur to MVKS, particle size less than 150µm and 3/17 ratio of A/F. Under the above optimal conditions, the compressive strength of solidified stuff rises to 35 MPa, and water absorption is down to 4%-6%.Furthermore, when NaOH is applied as an additive in the process of solidification, the 2+concentrations of most heavy metals except Pb have reached the national leaching toxicity standard. The results of X-ray diffraction reveal that sulfured solidification is caused by the physical encapsulation rather than chemical transformation.

Enargite rich copper concentrates can not be treated by conventional smelting/converting technology and thus nonconventional methods such as leaching must be used. Since enargite (Cu3AsS4) is a hard to dissolve mineral in acidic solutions, pyrite, a common impurity in copper concentrates, could be used to increase the enargite dissolution rate. On this matter, we present in this work experimental data on the pressure leaching of a mixed enargite-pyrite concentrate in H2SO4-O2. The results show that the dissolution of enargite from the mixed concentrate is considerably faster than the dissolution of pure enargite mineral. The leaching rate increases significantly with temperature. Over 98% of enargite was dissolved in leaching 64 micron size particles at 200 ºC and 100 psi of partial pressure of oxygen in just 30 minutes. A change in the partial pressure of oxygen from 50 to 150 psi showed also a large influence in the leaching rate.

For some time spirals have been the process equipment chosen to recover metal in the size range 0.15 to 3mm from ferrochrome and silico/ferro manganese slags. Recoveries of metal obtained using spirals are usually about 70%. Spirals are also difficult to control. By combining a novel gate on the Apic pneumatic fines jig with the recently developed Apic classifier, metal recoveries of 76% and grades of over 90% have been obtained for FeCr and SiMn slags in the size range 0.15 to 3 mm. The paper compares classifier operating performance and costs with those spirals for FeCr and SiMn metal recovery from slags. The classifier technology can also be applied to chromite and iron ores and coal fines.

Over the last few decades, water-based explosives and their precursors, despite their apparent insensitivity, have been involved in a number of accidents around the world. A large proportion of these accidents occurred when these emulsions were pumped either for their manufacture, transport, or handling. In Canada, this has led to the development of “Guidelines for the Pumping of Water-Based Explosive”, which state that “using pumping pressures well below the laboratory measured minimum burning pressure (MBP) of the corresponding emulsions or watergels is a good safety practice”. However, in the above document, there is no description on how the MBP should be measured. In the last few years, a research program at the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory (CERL) in collaboration with Orica has been focused on the development of a validated measurement protocol for realistic MBP measurements.
