IN general, billet-type or long slender ingots are used when it is desired to produce directly from the ingot in one conversion a product of medium or small cross-sectional area. They are designed to eliminate the blooming and billet-mill stages of the usual procedure. As used at Connors, they constitute a means of keeping a continuous rolling mill busy in the production of high-quality small rods, small angles, hoop stock, baling ties and concrete reinforcing rods without the need for a blooming or billet mill. They represent sound steel with the best surface that is commercially practical to use in the rolling of small continuous mill products.

This report describes the first phase of an investigation aimed at obtaining a wider knowledge of the problems involved in smelting titaniferous magnetites. Liquidus temperature measurements were made on selected slag compositions in the titania-alumina-silica-calcia-magnesia system. Both the melting-holding-quenching method and the hot-stage microscope method were used in the tests. Liquidus temperatures of slags studied ranged from 1,217° to 1,667° C. The lowest liquidus temperature of the slags occurred when the difference between CaO plus MgO and Si02 was less than 12 weight-percent. Liquidus temperatures were also lowered when Si02 was substituted for Ti02 plus Al2O3 when CaO and MgO levels were held constant. Improved methods for the measurement of liquidus temperatures on very small samples are described.

The use of electronic detonators to control blast vibrations has been previously established by many authors. This is performed by determining the optimum delay period between the blast holes for a particular pattern that can accurately control the firing frequency of the blast, which in turn has a direct bearing on the frequency composition of the ground vibrations recorded at a particular location. This was established by Pedgen, Birch, Hosein & Farnfield (2006) whereby like-for-like comparison tests between non-electric and electronic blasts were carried out in a limestone quarry in northern England. They demonstrated that resulting peak particle velocity values recorded at near and mid-field distances were primarily a product of the firing frequency of the electronically initiated blasts.

DURING the course of an investigation on the high-temperature creep behavior of TD Nickel* (Ni + 2) vol pct ThO2), it was observed that the creep fractures were similar in appearance to low-temperature ductile fibrous fractures and creep ruptures by cavitation. Microfractographs of fibrous ruptures are typically characterized by a dimpled appearance, with second-phase particles frequently found near the bottom of the dimples.'-4 These somewhat resemble creep ruptures by cavitation, in that fracture occurs by void formation, with the subsequent growth and final merging of the voids to form a complete fracture.' It is the purpose of this communication to describe the creep fracture of TD nickel and suggest a mechanism for the rupturing process. The discussion is relevant to material crept to fracture in vacuo at a constant stress of 18,000 psi, over the temperature range 900" to ll00°C. The material used in this investigation was 1/2-in.-diam bar stock supplied by Du Pont, contain- ing 2.3 vol pct Tho2. The final fabrication treatment consisted of -95 pct reduction by swaging followed by a 1-hr anneal at 1000°C. Transmission and replica electron microscopy revealed that the material had a fibered structure with a transverse grain size of -1 µ and a longitudinal grain size of 10 to 15 µ. Selected-area diffraction indicated that the fiber axis was parallel to (00l), in agreement with the results of Inman et a1.6 The thoria particle size varied from 80 to 1000Å, with an average size of 400Å, and the mean particle spacing was about 1200Å. The remarkable structural stability7 was confirmed by annealing for 6 hr at 1300°C (about ' 0.9 the absolute melting point). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the only structural change was a slight decrease in dislocation density. Furthermore, recrystallization or grain growth during creep has not been observed. All specimens were annealed in vacuo at 1300°C for 3 hr prior to creep testing. Critical and strategic metals are often present in small quantities in low-grade domestic ores. When these ores are leached, the resulting solution usually contains the metals in very dilute quantities. Selective electrowinning from dilute electrolytes was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A metal deposit containing 84 pct nickel was electrowon from the leach solution of a complex domestic ore bulk flotation concentrate originally containing approximately 2 wt-pct nickel. Key to achieving accelerated deposition rates, in the case of dilute solutions, is the rapid movement of the electrolyte through the electrowinning cell. Pure, synthetic nickel electrolytes were used to establish deposition parameters, and to optimize electrolyte velocity or mass transfer rates. Hydrodynamic and electrodeposition parameters for both the synthetic and leach electrolytes are presented and the experimental research described. Selective electrowinning appears to offer a viable alternative to physical separation methods to obtain separate metal "concentrates" from low-grade ores.

Andros Analyzers Incorporated has designed and built two prototype continuous methane monitors capable of being mounted on a mining machine'. These instruments were designed for in-mine safety use. The monitors incorporated an NDIR optical/electronic analyzer design in which the response to the sample gas (methane in air) was achieved by synchronous detection and measurement of the amplitude oscillations of the trasmitted energy from an infrared source caused by the pressure modulation of the sample gas within the optical cell. Zero and span stability were to be achieved by the amplitude modulating of the infra-red source and using detected signal to correct for optical/electronic system variation. This design effort was to simplify and reduce the cost of the major components while eliminating the need for daily calibration. This report is the final report on this effort.

THE ANTHRACITE region of Pennsylvania contains over nine-tenths of the total anthracite deposits of North America and produces all but an insignificant proportion of the total output of anthracite in the Nation. The whole economy of the northeastern section of the United States depends, to a large extent, on the mining of Pennsylvania anthracite, which is shipped to New Jersey, New York, and New England and is a principal source of energy and heat for that entire region. The responsibility of the Federal Government for developing an engineering method that will prevent inundation of the Pennsylvania anthracite mines and keep them in operation has long been recognized. To obtain a reliable picture of the anthracite-mine-water problem and to solve that problem, it is necessary to have factual data on the volume and the quality and character of the mine water handled by the pumping plants in the anthracite region, as well as the kinds of pumps utilized and problems concerning their operation.

The purpose of this paper is to indicate some of the benefits that have been derived in the Zeigler No. 3 mine by using roof bolts under extremely adverse roof conditions J with the thought that much better results could be obtained in other mines with more normal roof conditions by applying some of the practices that were developed in this mine. Some of the benefits that have been obtained in this mine, which will be shown in this paper, are: 1. Increased tonnage per man-shift at the face when roof bolts are used, as compared to the tonnage under similar conditions when conventional timbering methods were used. 2. Increased efficiency of roof bolting by giving the foremen a definite plan to follow. 3. Reduction in delays caused by failures of the trailing cables of loading, mining, and drilling machines. 4. Reduction in the number of accidents after roof bolting was adopted. Inasmuch as the success that followed roof bolting in this mine was obtained under one of the most treacherous roofs in the Middle West, it is reasonable to suppose that correspondingly better results could be obtained under more favorable roof conditions by using the same procedure.

The iron constituents selectively separated from the modified copper slags by magnetic separation and flotation.were studied. The results of magnetic separation for modified copper smelting slags show that the grinding size, current intensity and dispersant agent had great influence on grade, and recovery ratio of TFe in preparation concentrate; The results of flotation for magnetic concentrate show that the positive flotation of sodium oleate negatively upgrade the grade of magnetic concentrate, but the reverse flotation of lauryl amine and soluble starch are effective. The grade of TFe can reach 54% and the recovery ratio can reach about 90% in magnetic concentrate, when the grinding size is 45.8µm and the current intensity is 2.5A. The optimal effect is obtained by using lauryl amine as collector and soluble starch as depressant to reverse flotate magnetic concentrate, and the grade of TFe is upgraded 2.37%.

The paper point out the Antamina's social policies with Huascarán National Park. The project had required the mine engage with the communities most affected by the mine development, its operation, and closure. In this sense, operating within this social context has required Antamina to first be effective in understanding who the affected people are –at the local, regional, national and international levels. This understanding is also a process that requires time. Through the HWG, the company has achieved engagement, as well as an understanding an appreciation of viewpoints and perspective that has resulted in the protection of HNP, as well as the timely development of the project, with support of stakeholders. Therefore, the experience of the HWG was become for other natural resource projects in complex settings, involving national and international stakeholders and protected or sensitive areas.

The natural cementation strength of retorted oil shale is the focus of this investigation. The optimum retorting temperature and residence time to obtain natural cementation strength in retorted Green River oil shale from western Colorado were determined as follows: [Optimum Conditions for Natural Cementation Maximum Residence Obtained Retorting Time at Compressive Mode of Temperature Temperature Strength' Retorting °F °C hr psikg/cm-2 Direct 1,520 822 2.0 270 19.0 Indirect 1,530 832 2.9 325 22.8] 1 Scattered samples were tested at strengths as high as 463 psi (32.6 k /cm 2) (Run 8, indirect mode) and 406 psi (28.5 kg/cm2) (Run 48, direct mode), but these high strengths were not confirmed by nearby tests. Minus 0.5-inch (1.3-cm) Green River oil shale was heated in a differential retort under conditions simulating potential full-scale retorting processes. The variables investigated were retorting temperature, residence time, retorting mode, and shale grade. Samples of the retorted Green River oil shale were moistened to optimum plus 2% (25%) moisture, compacted to 95% Proctor density, sealed and cured at 100°F (38° C) for up to 40 days. Lower curing temperatures, which are likely in the field, would probably result in significantly slower development of cementation strength, and might lower the ultimate strength developed. However, these effects were not studied in this project. The cured samples were tested for compressive strength, and correlative equations were developed for the increase of compressive strength with curing time as a function of retorting temperatures and residence time. Petrographic analysis indicated that the cementing mechanisms may be the interlocking growth of acicular hydrated calcium aluminum sulfate crystals between the contacts of retorted shale fragments. Samples of the retorted shale were also tested for optimum Proctor density and moisture. Permeability and quality of the leachate of shale from typical runs were determined. The effect of use of retort rather than tap water on compressive strength and leachate after curing was determined. The retorted shale effectively filtered several mineral constituents from the retort water.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No.4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. Snow storms lasting several days and leaving up to two meters of snow have been experienced, while fierce winds are corm=.

With the depleting iron reserves and difficult market conditions, precision in separation efficiency is of utmost importance. Classical local control options are predominant in the industry, but their inability to adjust to resolve application problems of interest has furthered the need of developing and implementing continuous control methodologies.This paper highlights the recent development in control of Outotec SLon® vertically pulsating high gradient magnetic separator (VPHGMS) including programmable logic controllers (PLC) coupled with distributed control system (DCS), on-site human–machine interface (HMI) control panel, advanced process control, continuous online sampling using Courier® 8 and additional modernisation packages including level control and cooling monitoring. A modified Hallimond tube is described which allows the determination of the ultimate recovery R and the flotation rate constant k in a single, continuous experiment. The range of fine particles which can be satisfactorily floated with the modified apparatus can be extended by increasing the length of the bottom part of the tube. Findings suggest that pyrite and arsenopyrite can be separated in alkaline suspension using the so-called F series of collectors. Lime was found to act as a depressant. The collectors operate under pH and dosage control and do not require other depressants. Collectors used in the study were thio-amine (a cationic surfactant) and alkyl propionamide (a non-ionic surfactant)

The Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine was acquired by Newmont in August 2015. The high grade flotation mill project was commissioned in February 2014. The mill to date has been throughput limited due to mechanical and design issues. In order to create the most value from a throughput limited plant a campaign to provide timely ore characterization was undertaken. A diagnostic leach methodology was developed to determine gold associations by ore type. The resulting associations were then used to characterize feed blend; gold losses and optimize gold production. The diagnostic methodology is presented along with discussion on flotation implications.

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. The paper presents a brief overview of the mineral industry in Norway, followed by a description of the mineral policy and relevant legislation including the roles of the Norwegian Directorate of Mining and Geological Survey of Norway in this context. The discussion then proceeds to describe the land use planning framework on a national, regional and local level, the interaction between land use planning and the Directorate of Mining and the Geological Survey respectively, and how this impacts on the mineral industry and the exploitation of mineral resources. Some recent Norwegian examples of land use planning conflicts are also presented.
