The Bureau of Mines has developed prototype instruments promising to improve the ability to warn of imminent roof falls. An unusually good opportunity to test these comparatively under natural caving conditions was afforded by the forecasted caving in August 1977 of a mined-out region of the White Pine Mine. The latter's rock strata closely resemble those in many coal mines. The anticipated cave was of the competent-roof/weak-pillar type. It occurred as, and when, predicted. Automated convergence and bed separation gages agreed well with the standard manual convergence gage measurements. A micro seismic gage was found to be insensitive to the fall and may require different test conditions for effectiveness. A roof resistivity unit was tested under a separate Bureau of Mines contract. (No. H02720J7). An unplanned addition showed interesting potential.

When a large area of open gob collapses suddenly, a windblast is produced that can cause considerable damage throughout the infrastructure of a mine. In a few cases, the windblast has been accompanied by ignitions of methane and/or coal dust. This paper describes the conduct and results of laboratory tests involving the compression of mixtures of air, methane and coal dust under a falling weight and while allowing controlled escape of the mixture. The transient responses on pressure and temperature sensors were recorded. In addition to an analysis of those records, the paper highlights those conditions in which ignitions occurred.

Tungsten, silver, lead, zinc, and placer gold occur in the Cucamonga B RARE II area (no. B5174). A strata-bound, scheelite-bearing zone at the Blue Diamond prospect (fig. 1, no. 1) contains an estimated 16,000 tons (15,000 t) of identified, subeconomic resources averaging 0.16 percent tungsten trioxide (W03). There is a high potential for discovering additional tungsten resources at this property. The California-Hercules prospect (fig. 1, no. 5) ha; a mineral occurrence which contains an estimated 1,000 tons (900 t) of tactite averaging 1.3 oz silver per ton (45 g/t), 0.75 percent lead, and 0.72 percent zinc. Another occurrence, at the Blew Jordam Prospect (fig. 1, no. 4) has an estimated 100 tons (90 t) of tactite averaging 10 oz silver per ton (340 ,/t), 3.75 percent zinc, and 2.3 percent lead. There is a moderate potential for discovering silver, lead, and zinc resources at these prospects, which are in metamorphic pendants. There are a few lode gold prospects in the area (fig. 1, nos. 3, 11, 14) are on geologic structures which parallel the San Andreas Fault, northeast of the area. These deposits are not well exposed and have been historically unproductive. Placer gold in area B occurs locally in the beds of intermittent tributaries to Lytle Creek (fig. 1, nos. 10, 12, 13) in concentrations as high as $1.17 per cu yd ($1.53/cu m, at a gold price of $450 per troy oz). The deposits have no significant volume, but could be utilized for recreational panning and suction dredging. In the Cucamonga C RARE II area (No. C5174) placer gold occurrences locally contain as much as $1.23 per cu yd ($1.61/cu m). However, gravel containing the gold appears to be limited to stream beds, and does not occur in sufficient quantity to constitute resources. Recreational panning and dredging also may occur in this area.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of ground control considerations associated with cutter roof failure. Many of the relevant U.S. and international research studies since the late 1940's are reviewed, and summaries of recent design guides are included. Factors affecting cutter roof, such as underground stress field and rock structure around the entry, are described. Strata control techniques are also outlined. These techniques are divided into three sections: artificial support, mine structure design, and multiple-seam extraction. Other subjects covered in the report include monitoring and prediction, effect of geologic features, and mapping of adverse mining conditions. The emphasis of this report is on practical considerations; theoretical discussions are minimal.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) THE death of Professor Blake removes the oldest of American economic geologists and mining engineers, and deprives this Institute of one of its, earliest and most illustrious members. To many of us it brings a personal loss also, the loss of a friend. William Phipps Blake was born June 21, 1826, in New York City. -His father, Elihu Blake, was a surgeon-dentist of eminence, a direct descendant of William Blake, who settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1630. He was prepared for college at private schools in New York, and entered the Sheffield School of Yale, where he was graduated as Ph.B. in the chemical course, class of 1852, the first graduating-class of the institution. In the same year he became chemist and mineralogist of the New Jersey Zinc Co., and chemist of chemical works at Baltimore, Md. In 1853, lie started the Department of Mineralogy of the World's Fair at New York City. In 1854, 1855 and 1856, he was mineralogist and geologist of the United States Pacific Railroad Surveys of Williamson, Pope, and Whipple, and for the War Department at Washington. His writings, during this period comprise reports on the geology and mineralogy of California and other parts of the Southwest, and constitute well nigh the earliest scientific accounts of the regions described. One of them. was a translation of the Resume and Field Notes of Jules Marcou, of Whipple's expedition. From 1856 to 1859, he was engaged in explorations of the geology and mineral deposits of North Carolina, :and other parts of the country. In 1859, he became editor and proprietor of The Mining Magazine. This was a monthly periodical, founded in 1853 by W. J. Tenny, who conducted it until 1858, when it passed into the hands of Thomas McElrath, a New York publisher, and appeared in May of that year as The Mining and Statistic Magazine, with the name of

NEW place was assigned to the women for their headquarters at the annual meeting of the Auxiliary but they, as usual, occupied a large place in the activities of the annual meeting. The alcove on the Thirty-ninth Street side of the building was a busy place on Monday morning, as the members of the various sections from New York to California greeted each other. The registration was conducted under the supervision of Mrs. Wolfes, Miss Georgene Davis and Mrs. Jennings, while Mrs. Hursh, Mrs. Hyde, Mrs. Charlton Reynders, and others dispensed tickets to the various functions that had been provided for entertainment. There seemed to be the usual number registered, but when only one member of the District of Columbia Section made herself known everyone wondered why the large delegation of last year had so dwindled. The explanation appeared next day, when a number of others from that Section arrived, telling of a delightful reception on the night before, at the White House. Mrs. Hoover had honored the "Canaries"¬(the organization of Lone Girl Scout' workers) the officers of the Section, and their husbands, who for once became only "so and so's husband." Luncheon was served on the fifth floor on Monday, the hostesses for that day being Mesdames C. F. Ayer, Willis Burns, G. W. Farny, H. G. Moulton, and T. T. Read. The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. As an example, both the abundance of sulfate minerals and sulfur isotope patterns reflect the development of periods of anoxic conditions over time, with major intervals of anoxia reflected by a virtual lack or low abundance of sulfate minerals in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits in the Mesoarchean to the Palaeoproterozoic, and shorter intervals since.CITATION:Huston, D L, Eglington, B, Pehrsson, S, Piercey, S and Doublier, M, 2015. The mining law now in force in Finland is the Imperial Russian Ukase of 1883, promulgated November 12, 1883, by Czar Alexander III, with the sanc- tion and permission of the Finnish Estates. This law repealed prior legisla- tion, as follows: Crdinance of liay 25, 1857, concerning the appropriation of ores and minerals; as wall as the right to remove and utilize them; proclama- tion of January 20, 1868, amending, the ordinance of May 25, 1857; proclama- tion of October 3, 1621, concerning the appropriation of precious metals; and the proclamation of October 30, 1878, concerning prospecting for gold, etc., in Finnish Lapland. A proposal for a new mining lar is still being considered by the Finnish Diet. This new law, if and when promulgated, will differ only slightly from the law of 1683 but will be drafted in more modern language."

Black lung disease, or paeumocomosis, is a serious health hazard for workers working in a coal mine. Though the exact cause of black lung disease is not known, it is certain that prolonged inhalation of fine coal particles, ever present in the mines, does give rise to black lung disease. For a long time, it also has been known that limestone applied to coal dust mine surfaces tends to hold down coal dust thus preventing it from refloating in the air of the coal mines. Since the humidity in the mines may be generally high, this also might be an important factor in the particular substrate system behavior. Fine solid particles stick to other particles and surfaces very indiscriminately. The term adhesion is used for the phenomenon of attachment of particles to surfaces whereas cohesion is used for the phenomenon of attachment of particles to each other. The measurement of the force of adhesion of coal particles to coal substrates presents a great problem, especially in the case of particles in the size range of a few microns. These micron sized particles are at the limit of the resolution of the optical microscope and therefore an electron microscope has to be used for this purpose. The forces of adhesion between these particles and substrate may be very strong and can exceed the weight of the particle by four to five orders of magnitude.

A probabilistic slope stability computer model was developed at Utah State University and independently evaluated by CH2M Hill Consulting Engineers as a design and analysis tool. Volume I of this report describes the model and Volumes III and IV are users manuals for the computer programs. This volume (Volume II) constitutes the report by the CH2M Hill. It includes a description of a field investigation and stability analysis of an existing tailings dam. Based on the results of the analysis, the tailings dam was evaluated for redesign using probabilistic considerations. Conclusions are made regarding the usefulness of the model as a design tool.

The results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems in coal mines is reported. A review of communication methods presently used in coal mines is presented. Theoretical and-experimental results of a four pronged effort in the areas of (1) through-the-earth propagation, (2) paging system design, (3) improvement of wired telephone systems, and (4) carrier current systems are described. Auxiliary systems not included in the above are considered briefly. Various conclusions are drawn in light of practical constraints and the needs of the mining industry. The study clearly demonstrated the need for nine communications to be designed on system basis. The viability of new technology for providing reliable mine communication for improving mine safety and operating efficiency is shown.

As part of its program to develop technology that will encourage maximum utilization of the Nation's mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on debrining potash-clay waste slurries by means of flocculation with a high-molecular-weight polymer and subsequent solid-liquid separation on a rotating trommel screen. In laboratory batch tests, potash-clay waste slurries were consolidated from initial clay contents of 8 pct to final contents of 30 pct with a polymer dosage of 1.2 Ib/ton of dry clay waste. Small-scale continuous tests yielded debrined products containing 20 pct solids using a polymer dosage of 1 Ib/ton of dry clay solids.

TransCanada Pipelines, Calgary (TCPL) is one of North America's leading transporters of natural gas through its energy transmission business. TransCanada also operates significant complementary businesses in energy marketing and energy processing in North America and internationally. The main trunk pipeline crossing Canada comprises as many as six pipes, 30" to 48" diameter delivering up to 7.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per day. To maintain the maximum operating pressure of 1000 psi, it is necessary to provide compressor stations at 60 to 100 km spacing. One such station is located at Potter, in northern Ontario, some 80 km north of Timmins, referred to as Station 102. The station contains two compressor plants, 'A' and 'B' Each incorporates a gas turbine driven centrifugal compressor unit. 'A' Plant uses an aero-derived gas generator (jet engine) rated at 15 MW (19,000 HP).

This report presents a mathematical model for the propagation of UHF radio waves in the large cross-section tunnels of a room and pillar limestone mine, and describes the analysis of a small amount of propagation data obtained in a limestone mine. The model and analysis is based on the waveguide mode theory developed earlier for the transmission of UHF waves in coal mine tunnels, with allowance for propagation losses due to refraction into the tunnel walls, to scattering by wall roughness, and to long range random tilt of the walls. Propagation around corners and through pillars is also examined based on a ray theory approach, together with the beneficial effects of placing reflectors at intersections to significantly reduce corner losses. The theory is found to be in fair agreement with the data; however, additional in-mine measurements are needed to provide a more conclusive test of the model.

Geologic conditions in eight northern operating sections of Jane Mine, Keystone Coal Mining Complex. Armstrong County, Pennsylvania are defined by utilizing drillhole data and underground geologic mapping. Three of the eight sections are experiencing difficult mining conditions in the Shelocta "0" coal seam (formerly the Lower Freeport). The five remaining productive sections will exhaust their reserves within one year. Coordinating mine planning with future production levels is aided by indicating areas that appear favorable and lack the geologic conditions that cause difficult mining. Roof rock 1 ithologies, lithologic variations in and below the floor, jointing, overburden thickness, coal splits, paleochannels. and clay veins are the principal geologic factors believed to influence mining conditions in Jane Mine. Careful definition of each cause allows for a reasonable assessment of future mining conditions.

A Fortran IV computer program was developed to calculate the composition at equilibrium of products from a set of high-temperature gas combustion reactions. The program was used to develop high-temperature equilibrium concentration profiles for various constituents as a function of temperature and oxygen concentration. The computer program was specifically applied to reactions pertaining to the corrosion of superheater tubes in pulverized coal-fired boilers; however, it is useful for any multicomponent, multireaction scheme in which equilibrium constant data can be obtained and is comprised of gaseous reactants along with finely dispersed solids or liquids. General applicability of the computer program, including its limitations, are discussed along with detailed instructions for using the program.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract H0292025. The purpose of this project was to prove the feasibility of detecting hazards in a coal seam using a synthetic pulse radar. This work was conducted in three phases. The first was an analysis of the types of errors which might cause problems. The second was to build a breadboard radar and the third phase was to conduct a field test with the system. The work from each phase is discussed and the results of the field tests are presented. These results show propagation of the radar signal through 200 feet of coal along with reflections from 50 feet away. The final section contains recommendations for future development.
