An instrumented spherical vessel has been used for many years to study laminar combustion waves. Concurrent measurements of flame speed and pressure-rise rates have led to evaluations of burning velocities, the pressure dependence of the burning velocity, and the expansion ratios of the gases passing through the combustion wave. For the most part, these studies have involved flames initially at atmospheric or subatmospheric pressure. The old spherical vessel used by the Bureau of Mines was not designed for use at elevated pressures. Moreover, being made of wrought iron, it was susceptible enough to corrosion to prohibit its use with many combustible mixtures that figure in industrial research. In mid-1956, under sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research, the Bureau undertook the development of a stainless steel spherical vessel capable of withstanding explosions of gaseous mixtures at initial pressures as high as 20 atm. and initial temperatures as high as 250° C. The design called for a double array (cross) of closely spaced small windows for observation of the flame as it traversed the vessel and a piezoelectric transducer to measure concurrently pressure-rise rates. Because no commercial contractor was willing to bid on the construction of such a vessel, it was built at the Bureau's Bruceton machine shop.7

1.1 DEVELOPMENT OF INDUCTANCE MATRICES The basic building block in this analytical work is the development of an equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit for the cable depends on all of the distributed parameters of the cable although the series inductance and resistance are of primary importance. The cable resistances are generally available from handbooks or from cable manufacturers. On the other hand, the cable inductances are not usually available either from handbooks or from the manufacturer's published data. Thus, it is useful to summarize the derivation of the origin of the inductance matrix from basic principles. 1.1.1 Flux Around a Cylindrical Conductor The flux pattern around a cylindrical current carrying conductor can be found by using symmetry in conjunction with Ampere's Law. From symmetry it is clear that the flux lines which always close on themselves must be concentric circles. Thus, from symmetry alone one can get a qualitative picture of the magnetic field. This is shown in Fig. 1.1 where the inner circle represents the solid round conductor and the outer circle represents a flux line. The quantitative picture will now be developed using Ampere's Law.

Due to the approaching depletion of reserves in the Witbank Coalfield, and the fact that the Waterberg Coalfield is as yet under developed, there is increasing pressure to extend the lives of the operating coal mines in the Witbank Coalfield. One potential source of coal is the old pillars, often small and at shallow depth, that were not left with secondary extraction in mind. At face value, some of these pillars appear to be suitable for secondary mining due to their high safety factors. However, it is known that over time, these pillars have scaled and the current sizes are smaller than the as-mined dimensions. It is also known that at shallow depth, the overburden is often less likely to fail during secondary mining, resulting in high abutment loads on the unmined pillars. The paper proposes a systematic method to pre-evaluate those old pillars for the possibility of stooping. The method consists of elements of fundamental methods and newly developed technology. In essence, it revolves around using empirical methods to estimate current pillar dimensions, followed by numerical modelling to investigate the probability of progressive pillar failure and then fundamental methods to determine the limits of applicability of the numerical model.

Washburn, of Inland Steel, will act as the Co-Chairman in his stead. We are sorry, of course, that he cannot be here at this conference. We have, therefore, asked Mr. James J. Bowden, chief metallurgist of Republic Steel Corporation, Cleveland, to act as Chairman and Mr. Tom Washburn to act as Co-Chairman. I will turn the meeting over to these gentlemen at this time.

This paper presents the experience gained and the lessons learned over the last decade within the numerous offshore foundation projects undertaken in the offshore waters of Denmark and Belgium by COWI A/S of Denmark. This experience derives from the close collaboration with, and interaction between the owners, contractors, and engineers in the various stages of project development. In turn, the experience draws on COWI's experience within foundation of large bridges world wide over half a century. Focus is on two pioneering gravity base foundation projects: ? Nysted in Denmark, currently the largest offshore windfarm worldwide with 72 Nos Bonus 2.3 MW turbines in water depths up to 10 m in the relatively benign inner Danish waters ? Thornton Bank in Belgium, where the first phase - comprising 6 Nos REpower 5MW-turbines of a total of 60 - are planned to be built in the rough North Sea in water depths exceeding 25 m.

En este sentido, el "ore control" es la gestión que optimiza las diferentes etapas de la exploración, explotación y concentración del mineral para lograr una buena calidad de producto (concentrados), a fin de satisfacer las necesidades del cliente. Los controles involucran a la Gerencia y el total de supervisores y trabajadores de operaciones, quienes deben ser proactivos ejecutando acciones preventivas más que correctivas.

The objective of this work was to define jet fan performance in d variety of large cross-section underground mine applications and to develop guidelines for thin performance in open airways, dead headings, and multiple face areas. Measurements include common ventilation instruments, continuous recording remote electronic anemometers to measure air velocity, and sulfur hexaflouride tracer gas with chromatograph analysis to determine dilution rates and air recirculation. For open airways the following were determined: Large jet fans are leas efficient in smaller airways, but quite effective in larger open airways for achieving both uniformity end greater air entrainment, when inclined about 10° or elevated. For dead headings the following were determined: The jet fan must be placed against the rib of the heeding closest to the incoming airstream from the crosscut or recirculation will increase. The fan should be placed at the pillar corner to increase airflow. As the fan is moved closer inby, recirculation increases. Larger fans promote recirculation. Inclining fans about 12° improves airflow in large headings. For face areas the following were found: For panels having uncontrolled airflow, the fan should be placed in the incoming airflow, about one pillar inby, and directed diagonally across the faces. For panels having narrower rooms and controlled airflow, the fan should be placed alongside the panel side in the first room so as to direct or intersect the incoming airflow at the next entry or crosscut.

Rroundtable 2009, a Knight Piésold and Co.-hosted roundtable discussion on mine closure and cover design was held at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV on Feb. 12, 2009. Knight Piésold?s Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce, as well as Knight Piésold representatives Cynthia Parnow and Corey Conrad from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from the Tucson, AZ office were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to approximately three-dozen attendees from four states. Attendees included personnel from seven mining properties and attendees from corporate offices. The majority of attendees were people directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Other attendees were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus. The purpose of Roundtable 2009 was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to mine closure and cover design associated with almost any aspect of a mining operation. This type of forum provides a less inhibited format for discussion, when compared with traditional conferences and symposia. In the roundtable format, lively discussions are encouraged. This discussion was the fourth in the series of Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to heap leach pad design, construction and operation; design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities and site-wide water considerations. This report presents the results of a study to determine compaction criteria for coal waste embankments. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the costs and resulting effects on the engineering proper-ties of coal waste materials, utilizing different compaction methods, equipment passes, and lift thickness. Based on the results of the study, a cost efficient compaction method that will attain the desired results will be recommended to the coal mining industry. The report describes a comprehensive literature search into the compaction of coal waste materials, field compaction programs, laboratory investigations, analysis of test data as well as conclusions and recommendations for establishing the compaction criteria. The findings obtained in this investigation are intended to supply much needed information and to justify the guidelines that have been recommended.

The alkaline ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) leach process for extracting tungsten from scheelite (CaW04) ores has been examined for the treatment of low grade (<0.5 per cent WO,) residue dumps. The process has been considerably simplified by applying solvent extraction directly to the leach liquor.Ammonium paratungstate is thereby produced in a one step process and this obviates the need to physically recover EDTA prior to recycling. This modified process should be an economical method of tungsten extraction.

BM37 is a bonanza-grade (>30 ppm Au) ore shoot of the Maria Lode of the Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal deposit in the southern Hauraki Goldfield. Samples from BM37 contain up to weight percent gold. The ore shoot is a vein that pinches and swells, but is typically tens of cm thick, and locally exceeds 0.5 m in true width. Gold occurs as irregular anhedral electrum grains that range up to 300 microns across and contain 38 to 59 wt per cent Au (ave. 52 wt per cent Au). Electrum occurs in sulphide-rich bands in association with pyrite, chalcopyrite, acanthite, galena, sphalerite, and local covellite. Lower grade samples contain local to rare mckinstryite [(Ag, Cu) 2S] and polybasite [(Ag, Cu) 16 (As, Sb) 2S11]. Pyrite from BM37 is nearly stoichiometric; it lacks the As that commonly occurs at up to percent levels in pyrite from other veins in the goldfield. Acanthite also contains low quantities of trace metals, and typically has less than 2.5 per cent Se. The vein shows complex textures. Bonanza grade sulphide-rich ginguro bands form discrete layers adjacent to the vein margins, and occur as breccia fragments encased by later massive to comb quartz with local quartz after platy calcite. Both the breccia fragments and ginguro bands are cross-cut by later quartz veins. Textures thus indicate that formation of the high-grade portions of BM37 resulted from one or more discrete events that differed markedly from the events that formed the bulk of the vein.

Sequential excavation of the Beacon Hill Station has been accomplished in highly complex and inter-layered sand, silt, and clay soils with multiple perched groundwater tables. Successful excavation has required the installation of a deep dewatering well system used to depressurize sand layers above and within the excavated tunnel faces. In addition, the presence of sand layers in the crown of the Platform Tunnels required jet grouting at depths of up to 49m (160-ft). This paper discusses the design intent, construction, and effectiveness of the dewatering system and the selective jet grouting of sand horizons and shaft break outs for the successful construction of the deepest SEM station excavation ever completed in the United States.

INTRODUCTION Prior to excavation in soil and rock, it is useful to know the subsurface structure. This is important information both for safety and for equipment scheduling reasons. It is useful to know whether parts of the subsurface might be potentially troublesome or of different character than is generally thought present. By using geophysical probing, it is possible to infer the location and size of these unusual regions. The ground structure is commonly estimated from core samples taken from boreholes. These cores give a detailed knowledge of the structure in the borehole. However, knowledge of the structure exterior to the borehole can only be extrapolated from core data. By using seismic and electromagnetic cross-borehole geophysical probing, remote probing can be used to sense the region exterior to boreholes. A recent advance has significantly improved the state-of-the-art for defining the ground structure between boreholes. This new procedure utilizes large amounts of data and provides a detailed picture of the subsurface. The data processing algorithms used are similar to those in medical imaging of the human body using x-rays, a science called x-ray tomography. This imaging of the ground is called geotomography, which is a shortened acronym for geophysical tomography. Several examples of geotomography applied to imaging ground structure are presented. Our approach has been to probe the ground with electromagnetic and seismic waves. We map the region of interest with signals transmitted between multiple source and receiver pairs lowered in boreholes on opposite sides of the region (Figure 1). Cooling of critical furnace equipment to produce freeze lining is of particular interest as many metallurgical processes are intensified while attempting to prolong campaign life. This idea was combined with high-capacity heat pipes in the design of a copper slag launder. The design methodology of the launder and heat pipe cooling system is examined in this paper. With reliable material properties and operating conditions, CFD was used to quantitatively predict the skull thickness and the corresponding heat load applied to the slag launder. The operational limitations of heat pipe technology were considered and an appropriate cooling system was incorporated into the model. Parametric modeling was used to simulate several launder and heat pipe configurations. The generated results were then used to optimize the design of the launder, which was built and tested in August of 2005. The experimental performance of the cooling system is evaluated and compared with the model results.

High metal prices and new world trade standards and accounting for environmental liability in financial disclosures are creating markets for metals commodities that are produced using ?green technologies?. A promising "green" gold leaching system uses a polysulfide based lixiviant which is non-toxic and non-polluting. Laboratory testing has demonstrated selective gold extraction rates comparable to those of cyanide. The polysulfide lixiviant is a dilute aqueous solution which can be inexpensively produced from readily available chemical reagents and even mining wastes. The reagent system is self-buffering and maintains the optimal chemical environment for leaching. Treatment of residual leach solutions is not necessary because the lixiviant itself is not toxic, and breaks down as the system equilibrates. Simple closed system boiling is used to recover gold from process solutions. The polysulfide lixiviant can then be readily renewed and recycled back into the system, forming a closed loop system that conserves reagents and energy which minimizes operating costs. Economic projections have shown that the system can be used profitably for standard ore types and grades.

El uso de los procesos estocásticos y cadenas de Markov se ha desarrollado solo para estudios de probabilidades en la rama de las ciencias matemáticas y como una opción a las descripciones tradicionales en el campo del procesamiento de minerales, se realizó una comparación entre ambas metodologías para lo cual se cuenta previamente con varios análisis granulométrico proveniente de los molinos de Bolas industriales de la empresa Shougang Perú y pruebas granulometrías de Molienda de Sider-Perú, comparar en ambos estudios, como el probabilístico (Cadenas de Markov) y el cinético (Selección y fractura) ofrecen un buen acercamiento al resultado experimental, dando como una buena alternativa el primero por su uso del manejo estocástico.

The stone columns are widely used in the improving the bearing capacity of weak soils mostly for supporting flexible foundation systems. The load carrying capacity of a stone column is complex in nature. The load capacity is derived from the lateral stresses acting on the stone column due to load transmitted from the flexible structure due to deformation to soil mass and which in turn transmits lateral pressure in s3 direction. The load capacity is also function of the f value of the stone column, cohesion of the surrounding soil, K0 and Gb2 of surround­ing soil including passive resistance developed to lateral deformation of the stone column. The assessment of axial and radial deformation is much more complex. Recently Katti et.al. have developed a method based on a granular heap approach and computed with equivalent fe. which combines the effect of s3a and equivalent volume concept to estimate radial and axial strains. In this paper an attempt is made to put forward guidelines for design of stone column accounting for both stability with respect to shear and also with respect to settlement. The estimate of settlement are based on the internal properties of stone column and surrounding soil. It is considered thus the settlements computed are more realistic.

Este proceso concluye con una recopilación de documentos fiables y totalmente óptimos para el desarrollo de las funciones de mantenimiento. Su uso correcto en la evaluación de los requisitos de mantenimiento de los equipos existentes, genera un mantenimiento menos costoso, confiable y eficaz. Asimismo se disminuye los costos de mantenimiento y se relaciona los aspectos ambientales y de seguridad.
