Increased mechanization .of coal mines has emphasized the need for study of actual power requirements of the various machines employed in the production of coal and losses in the distribution of power to these machines. These studies are being made in order that hazards, excessive use of power, and high maintenance cost of equipment resulting from these losses may be analyzed and eliminated where possible. Research on the use of electric power in-coal mines was suggested by the Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Mines in 1937, and it was decided to begin with a study of individual machines of various types under operating conditions in modern coal mines. The transmission of power, particularly line losses and inadequate return circuits, should be a part of the investigation. This report presents some of the data of an initial study in commercial mines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The superintendents, engineers, and other officials of the two mines studied cooperated fully and aided in setting up and transporting the test equipment, giving such information as was requested.

Slope stability at the proposed mine in Rajasthan was analysed in two dimensions using a finite difference code. The properties of the rock material were determined in the laboratory and subsequently modified to approximate those of the in situ rock mass. Geotechnical mapping was undertaken to determine the critical orientation of structural discontinuities. The results of the work indicated that an open pit 148 m in depth would be stable with overall slope angles of 60 degrees

Synthesis report on a project carried out under the EC-funded BRITE-EURAM programme. A large deposit in Spain and several smaller ones in Greece and Sweden were investigated. Beneficiation testwork, including the development of an innovative wet circuit, was undertaken in Italy. The Spanish Ilustracion deposit lies occurs in thin, white layers throughout a zone 35-40 m thick and 1.5 km long, in laminated calcsilicates. Total resources of more than 100 000 000 t include proven open-pittable reserves of 4 500 000 t averaging 35% wollastonite. The beneficiated product is suitable for various applications, including ceramics. The Swedish and Greek marble-hosted skarn deposits include Albatross, with 2 500 000 t of reserves at 30% wollastonite, and Panorama, with reserves estimated at more than 700 000 t

The Bureau of Mines, through a 4-year program of combined in-house and contract research, has developed the necessary hardware and software technology to provide rugged, reliable automatic fire protection for surface mining mobile equipment. One element of this program was a continuing effort to help foster rapid mining industry acceptance of the technology by keeping end user costs reasonable. This report is an analysis of the economic impact of surface mining mobile equipment fires and the cost benefit of utilizing automatic fire protection systems to abate these losses.

Thiourea is a reagent capable of complexing gold and silver. With the proper oxidant, thiourea can effectively dissolve metallic gold and silver. A thiourea leaching system possesses potential advantages over conventional cyanidation including acidic solutions instead of alkaline, cationic complexes in contrast to metal-cyanide anoionic complexes, and faster leaching rates with acidic solutions of thiourea. Generally, the rate of metal dissolution in thiourea solution is fastest when ferric ion is employed as an oxidant. Acidic thiourea solutions for certain applications could offer a nontoxic and noncorrosive option for processing gold and silver. This paper provides information regarding the fundamental chemistry of the acidic thiourea system, and reviews the dissolution of both silver and gold in acidic solutions of thiourea. The recovery of gold and silver from acidic thiourea solution is discussed.

[The utilization of Western coals and lignite is a continuing study of the Bureau of Mines, and storage of these fuels is of paramount importance. Since the seasonal demand for coal in the Western States triples between the summer and winter months, successful storage of these low-rank fuels would tend to level out this variation and should reduce fuel costs. The time is rapidly approaching when the West Coast States, particularly California, will annually import several million tons of coal from the Rocky Mountain States for additional power production. This will necessitate storage of large quantities of coal, and it is thefore important to develop experience in such storage. Dry surface storage, by virtue of its flexibility and low cost, is particularly adapted to the stockpiling of large quantities of coal. This report will, therefore be primarily concerned with such storage. Inasmuch as the problems of dry, open-pit storage are quite similar to those of surface stockpiling, experiences in pit storage will be discussed briefly. Although spontaneous combustion is a hazard in storing coal, experience has proved that heats can be avoided by proper stockpiling procedures. The purpose of this report is to show that the most reactive coals can be stored satisfactorily on the surface by avoiding segregation and by thorough compaction.]

The numerous small high grade gold and silver deposits of the Front Range Mineral Belt have been uneconomical because of the high costs of mill construction, transportation, and smeltering. Processing of these ores must be simple, cheap, with satisfactory recoveries, and be environmentally acceptable. Vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery satisfies these parameters. A battery of testing was conducted utilizing bottle and bucket tests. A five ton vat leach with direct electrolytic recovery gave excellent results while a five ton heap leach proved impractical due to channeling.

Two coal seams were selected and the conceptual designs were based on the geological and physical conditions typical of these seams. As a result of the screening process presented below, the two coal seams selected were the Lower Kittanning Seam in central Cambria County, Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh Seam in northwestern West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania. SELECTION PROCESS FIRST SCREENING OF LONGWALL OPERATIONS The list of longwall operations prepared in Phase I and included in the Phase I report, was used as the basis for a first screening. From this list it was determined which longwall operations were not in the Appalachian coal fields and not in a coal seam of the thickness range of 42 to 72 inches. The first screening eliminated 30 of the listed operations, leaving 48.

The properties of some heavy liquids which can be used in sink-float separations are discussed with major emphasis being given to the halogenated hydrocarbons. Data are presented on density, viscosity, thermal characteristics and the effects of moisture and temperature on the corrosiveness of the liquids towards various materials of construction. The toxicity of these materials, the hazards involved in handling them, and the procedures for handling them safely are also discussed. True liquids have certain advantages over colloidal suspensions for sink-float separation of minerals which makes their use especially advantageous when close separations, fine particle sizes or water-soluble minerals are to be treated. For best separating results, the medium should have an easily controlled, uniform, stable density. Here, true liquids have the advantages of allowing closer control of density and of not requiring agitation to maintain a uniform den- sity in the equipment. Low viscosities are desired in a separating liquid so that rapid separations of fine material can be made. Many liquids have lower viscosities than the colloidal suspensions at operating gravities of 1.4 to 5.0. For economic reasons and to prevent contamination of the product, the separating medium must be easily and completely removed from the ore. Normally, true liquids must be more completely removed than the cheaper suspensions and thus cause more problems in this area. The fact that the medium should not react with the minerals, air, water or the common materials of construction limits the choice of liquids which can be used, but many are available which are sufficiently stable. A more serious objection to the use of true liquids is that many of them present a toxic hazard to operating personnel and users of the product. Most true liquids are toxic to some extent, but modem knowledge of toxicity allows us to recognize the hazards inherent in handling them and enables us to design around them. Three types of true liquids are available for this use: 1) Halogenated hydrocarbons cover the gravity range from 1.2 to 3.3. They are generally more volatile and less viscous than the other liquids.

Zircon producers are often required to lower impurity levels to meet customer specifications as most of these impurities adversely effect the end use. For example, zircon sand in foundry applications needs to be free of any surface impurities (eg clay, gibbsite and goethite) which otherwise could cause sintering or fusion between cast metal and the zircon mould. Light coloured ceramic grade zircon, typically low in iron oxides and titania, is preferred in ceramics applications. The presence of impurities in zircon sands is a problem in the magnetic and electrostatic separation stages of their concentration. Previous work (Aral et al, 1997) showed that impurities in zircon sand concentrates occurred in the form of stains on grain surfaces, discrete gangue minerals and in the mineral grains. The gangue minerals such as rutile, garnet, xenotime, monazite, spinels, ilmenite, and aluminium silicates in the concentrate in some cases (Aral et al, 1997) contribute significantly to the impurity content of the concentrate. A careful hand picking of the impurity grains from a Western Australian zircon sand showed that the impurity content of the concentrate could be lowered significantly as a result of the removal of the surface stained grains and gangue minerals. The hand-picked ædirtyÆ fraction, comprised about eight per cent by weight of the concentrate, and consisted mostly of iron-oxide/hydroxide-stained zircon, silica grains and rutile, and occasionally ilmenite, monazite, gahnite and other (unidentified) coloured grains. The chemical analysis of the remaining æcleanÆ fraction showed that the major impurities (Fe and Ti) were reduced significantly (Table 1). The reduction in the uranium content was about 30 per cent. The other measured impurities, P, Mg, Al, Th, and Ca remained mostly unchanged as shown in Table 1. The contribution of ilmenite to the overall iron content of æcleanÆ zircon was insignificant as it comprised about 0.1 per cent weight of the æcleanÆ zircon. Rutile was the major source of titanium contamination (about one per cent by weight). Recent work (Aral and Calle, 1999) on zircon sand concentrates from the Murray Basin showed that, under the electron microprobe, the bulk of the impurities occurred in the dark back scattered electron (BSE) regions of the zoned zircon grains. The impurity contents of the light BSE regions and unblemished (unzoned) grains were low. The impurity content in zoned zircons has been investigated on single, relatively large, crystals (McLaren, Gerald and Williams, 1994; Smith et al, 1991; Romans, Brown and White, 1975). These studies generally aimed to investigate the incorporation of U in zircon as zircon is used extensively for U-Pb geochronology owing to its relatively high content of uranium. Smith et al (1991) identified a striking difference in composition between the areas of lower (dark BSE) and higher (light BSE) average atomic number in the zoned zircon. Their work showed in particular that the zones of lower atomic numbers contained very significant amounts of trace metals such as Y, REE, Nb, U, Al, Fe, Ca, Ba and, by difference H2O. In this paper the impurity distribution in zoned zircon grains was investigated on statistically significant number of grains before and after a leach treatment. The distribution of impurities was also measured in unblemished areas to compare the results.

The Bond grindability testing procedure has been standardized to measure the same grindability values, i.e. Bond work index (BWi), for the same ore when tests are performed in different laboratories or by different operators. This is accomplished by the standardization of mill dimensions, tumbling speed, grinding ball charge weight and distribution, sample ore charge weight in the mill and operating practice. The results of this investigation reveal that the Bond work index grindability values may differ substantially with different standard Bond ball mills. This paper will review the results.

Scanning electron microscope–Mineral Liberation Analyser SEM-MLA can be used to discriminate between hematite/magnetite in iron ores, but achieving backscattered electron (BSE) segmentation between the two minerals is difficult for particles =75 µm using typical preparation and analysis methods for the MLA based on a tungsten filament SEM (Quanta 400) with 25 kV high voltage. Preparing iron ore sample mounts using a slow-speed polishing method, and conducting the experiment on a field emission gun SEM-MLA (Quanta 650) with the high voltage (HV) setting lowered to 15 kV reduces instrument noise and results in very clean BSE images and segmentation. This method requires new X-ray standards to be acquired for each mineral identity at 15 kV because of major changes in the spectra at lower kV. Uranium ore at Sleisbeck, N.T., occurs as lenticular bodies associated with zones of bleached carbonized schists lying between walls of closely folded quartzite. The ore consists mainly of uranium micas with Borne pitchblende.INTRODUCTIONThe Sleisbeck uranium prospect is about 70 miles E. of Pine Creek, and 160 miles S.E. of Darwin (Fig. 1). The prospect consists of a well-defined, E.-W. trending line of hills, about I! miles long. The line is composed of 3 major hills called the Eastern, Central and Western hills, with minor interconnecting hills and outcrops (Fig. 2).

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority are undertaking the extension of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Metrorail service to Washington Dulles International Airport and beyond to Route 772 in Loudoun County, Virginia. The roughly 37 kilometers long, double track alignment involves two 700 meters long single track, soft ground NATM tunnels at Tysons Corner, two 3.3 kilometers long single track rock TBM tunnels at Dulles Airport and one 25-meter deep station at the airport to be constructed by NATM in sedimentary rock. The design-build project is being implemented in a Public-Private-Partnership. A joint venture of Bechtel and Washington Group International has concluded the preliminary engineering and construction is scheduled to start in late 2007.

Brine produced from subsurface formations may be employed successfully instead of fresh water as a flooding, medium in the secondary recovery of oil. The feasibility of this substitution has been proved in the shallow "shoestring" area of eastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, where the supply of fresh water often is limited. In this procedure all brine produced with the oil is returned to the formation and thus is prevented from contaminating streams and fresh-water supplies. This report includes a detailed description of a "flood project" in eastern Kansas studied by the Bureau of Mines. In an attempt to determine whether brine, when handled properly, can be used as effectively as fresh water in flooding oil from partly depleted, formations, an analysis was made of all .own conditions that influence flooding.

Some years ago, a method was developed to incorporate a grout column around square-shaft helical screw-piles and anchors to increase shaft buckling resistance under compression loading. An additional benefit of this grouted shaft is to increase the load capacity in both compression and tension, depending on the geometry of the lead helical section and the soil conditions. Because of the unique construction procedure, the contribution of the shaft to the total capacity has largely been unknown. The behavior of grouted shaft helical anchors in clay was investigated by performing full-scale axial uplift (tension) load tests on a series of anchors installed at the University of Massachusetts Geotechnical Test Site. In order to isolate the contribution of the grouted shaft to the total load capacity, anchors were installed with a wooden dowel connection between the lead helical section and extension sections on three of the four anchors so that only the shaft resistance would be measured during the load tests. The grouted shafts ranged in length from 10 to 30 ft (3 to 9 m). Initial tests were performed approximately 5½ months after installation. Nearly four years after the initial tests were performed, the tests were repeated to evaluate any significant change in capacity with time and/or repeat testing (preshearing). The soil conditions at the site are presented along with the load-displacement curves for both the initial and repeat teats and a discussion of the analysis of the results. Repeat load tests showed an increase in capacity from the initial testing, however the percent increase was not the same for all depths. The results demonstrate that considerable shaft resistance can be developed in clays from the grouted shafts as might be expected. Depending on the L/D ratio of the shaft and the contribution of the lead helical section, at working loads the shaft capacity can dominate the behavior.

Laboratory data for 155 field muds and 77 .shales have been used to develop correlations to estimate the net streaming potential component of the SP. Analysis of these data and comparison with field tests show that streaming potential corrections must be made to obtain an accurate estimate of the electrochemical potential for use in the determinntion of formation water resi-iiviy. The self-potential curve is related to formation water resistivity, and considerable effort within the oil industry has been directed toward clarifying this relationship. The Schlumbergers and Leonardon1,2 recognized that two types of potentials, electrochemical and electro-kinetic, resulted in the net potential variation in the borehole. Most of the later papers have dealt with the electrochemical component and its controlling parameters. The investigations of Wyllie,2" Salisch' and Moore5 provide the most extensive sources of data on streaming potentials across mud cakes. These authors observed streaming potentials of sufficient magnitude to be of critical importance in SP interpretation, if it is assumed that streaming potentials develop only opposite permeable beds. Streaming potentials across shales have been reported by Schenck and by Gondouin, et al.7 Since SP magnitude is the difference in potential opposite shale and sand beds, these authors suggested that the net streaming potential component may be negligible. The present investigation was initiated to evaluate empirically some of the parameters controlling the magnitude of the net borehole streaming potential and to determine whether useful relations between mud properties and net streaming potential could be established. Field muds were used in this investigation. These muds were characterized by the amount and type of chemical treatment utilized for five days before Sampling. Filter loss, mud resistivity, mud density and filtrate resistivity were determined for each mud with conventional methods and apparatus. Mud filtrate pH was estimated with Hydrion pH paper for the appropriate range. INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. Ground conditions were described as chalk marls of homogeneous nature with the possibility of friable areas and some revelling.
