JUDGING by the progressive atmosphere prevailing in the nonmetallic mineral industries during the past year, postwar conditions were healthful though inflationary. Demand for most industrial mineral products has been exceptionally high and many new production records were attained. Severe shortages of some commodities existed, especially building materials and fertilizers. Production costs and prices increased and profitable operation was general. Under these conditions expansion programs were the order of the day. Ample funds were available to finance the purchase of good equipment; and, as wages and other operating costs were increasing, primary emphasis was placed on attaining maximum efficiency in new installations. These efforts were hampered by shortages and slow delivery of desirable equipment, so compromises in design were often necessary. However, on the whole, production practice improved.

This paper deals with the analysis of pillar failure in a room and pillar mining operation of a deep underground coal mine. The incident here involved the failure of more than 100 pillars. The mechanism of pillar failure (bump/squeeze) has been studied in detail. The analysis consists of inmine eyewitness observations, laboratory experiments and analytical study of the pillar failure area using finite element technique. Results indicated that the mechanical properties of coal, roof and floor, geologic condition, and the method of operation have affected the mode of pillar failure. Hard roof and floor prevented roof caving and floor heaving in the gob area creating an inhomgeneous stress field on the pillar. This condition developed a yield zone and a core zone in the pillar. Progressive increase of vertical stress further increased the yield zone of the pillar and reduced the core pillar leading to a total squeeze of the pillar. However, the analysis indicated that the pillars were liable to bump provided any sudden shift of load occurred on the core pillar due to some dynamic shock imparted by a local failure of the immediate roof (slickenslided area) or during splitting.

Siendo la veta principal San Cristóbal, una de las estructuras que atraviesan el Anticlinal Chumpe en la provincia de Yauli, su explotación ha sido limitada a las rocas volcánicas y filitas en el flanco sur-oeste del anticlinal. Por tal motivo, el texto señala que el análisis de la distribución de los metales y minerales dentro de la veta, revela un zoneamiento horizontal bien definido, que es compatible con el origen de las soluciones hidrotermales en el centro del anticlinal. Asimismo, este estudio cuantitativo determina las características de las partes ricas de la veta, trazando líneas de contornos de los cuatro tipos de metal en secciones longitudinales, como los controles de la distribución de metal y relaciona las áreas ricas de la veta con su medio geológico. De otro lado, en San Cristóbal, la distribución del metal presenta una característica zonal donde la paragénesis y el zoneamiento están íntimamente relacionados. Concluyéndose que con la aplicación de los resultados de este estudio, se permitirá una mejor exploración y desarrollo de las áreas ricas de la Veta Principal San Cristóbal y se proporcionará una guía útil para la exploración y desarrollo de vetas paralelas en esta área.

In the premining stage of engineering design, the only available data are obtained from core drilling. It is often not sufficient for a realistic design of strata control. During the development, an access to the geological formation is created, enabling in situ testing. Obtained data can be utilized accordingly to improve preliminary design. The available methods for testing are described with emphasis on their application for a longwall system. The optimum design ensuring continuous operation of the high output longwalls is critical because their downtime is very expensive. Optimization of ground control measures also has the potential for substantial savings by elimination of unnecessary support.

Failure of the mine floor supporting coal pillars frequently occurs when the subcoal strata include "underclays" or other low strength strata. The failure process has been studied to define the response of these materials to applied coal pillar loads and to determine the applicability of bearing capacity analysis to evaluate unsafe conditions. The study has been accomplished through an investigation of both the intact and insitu geotechnical properties of the subcoal strata and through the installation of floor movement monitoring instrumentation. The results of these studies have indicated that both the shear strength of the underclay and the stratigraphy of the subcoal strata must be considered in the analysis. The shear strength was the major controlling factor determining the ultimate load carrying ability of the materials, but the thickness and stratigraphic position of the weak layers influenced the mechanism of the failure process. The methods of bearing capacity analysis were used to define pillar stability that included provisions for taking into consideration a two-layer system. Conditions assumed for a coal mine where a weak underclay overlies firmer strata. The results of the analysis compared very well with observed mine conditions, indicating marginal conditions in areas of the mine which later experienced pillar support failure. In addition, a "heave factor" was derived to predict potentially unstable floor conditions in the mines studied in detail.

The contractor examined L.T. White's Patent No. 3524680 and, finding it in need of engineering refinements, proceeded with a conceptual design of a variable wall mining machine. The contractor then proceeded to assess the feasibility of the variable wall mining machine measured against the criteria specified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The feasibility was judged from a physical aspect, a health and safety aspect, and an economic aspect. The Variable Wall Mining Machine was judged to be feasible on all three aspects provided that certain specified practices were adopted. Description The specifications and design and performance parameters of the Variable Wall Mining System as conceptualized are summarized in Tables I and II. The system consists of a side-cutting auger operating in a string of identical 12 ft. sections, along a 500 ft. retreating longwall face. In addition to the 41 identical sections, there is a special drive and discharge section at the head gate.

In two decades Turkey has emerged from the debacle of the Ottoman Empire to become one of the most modern nations in the Middle East. The numerous achievements of this period were remarkable in that they affected human and social, as well as economic, fields. Most of this progress was achieved by Turkey's unaided efforts and the utilization of domestic resources; however, since 1948 various United States aid programs3/ have made significant contributions to increased agricultural and industrial output. Turkey's singleness of purpose in favor of a strong, independent, and prosperous republic has evoked universal admiration and encouraged the hope of stability in the Middle East. Much of the development of the Turkish economy to date has been fostered by the State; however, with growing strength the leaders in 1950 considered the time appro¬priate to relax the nationalistic economic policy and permit private enterprise to play a larger role in increasing domestic output and raising the tempo of industrialization. In pursuance! Of this policy, laws encouraging investment of foreign capital in Turkey and others stimulating development of mining and petroleum enterprises were enacted in 1954. This new legislation, plus the cooperative attitude of the Turkish Government, have encouraged wide interest in the mineral resources of the country.

In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is being increasingly considered as an alternative to traditional truck-shovel mining methods. The move towards IPCC is driven by a number of factors including the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the availability of skilled labour and the need to increase extraction rates to levels that present significant challenges to traditional methods.When considering the relative performance of IPCC and truck-shovel methods, the outcome can be inadvertently impacted by either the use of different simulation approaches, or techniques that do not adequately model the processes in sufficient detail.A simulation approach is proposed that models both IPCC and truck-shovel using the same software platform and is capable of functioning at a wide range of resolutions from life-of-mine scale through to second-by-second asset tracking level. The simulation framework also holds models of processing equipment and hence the mining simulations can be extended to gauge the impact on downstream plant.The approach, known as mine-process operational simulation (MPOS), can be tailored to the level of information available and hence the type of study required, ie order of magnitude, prefeasibility, feasibility, or detailed design.Using information from block models and a range of detailed equipment and process models, MPOS can span major system discontinuities, typified by the mine-plant interface, to allow the estimation of final mine and plant product specifications.

The uses for which ground talcs are suited closely depend upon their physical and chemical properties , but , in spite of this fact , little scientific investigation has been made in order to devise quick and accurate tests for the determination of these properties . The chemical properties of talc are inherent and may not be altered or modified except by selective mining or by chemical processes not practical in the present status of the industry . However , the determination of chemical properties is not so important , for most uses , as of physical properties , although sometimes certain chemical characteristics are perhaps unduly insisted upon by chemists in some industries . Physical properties are dependent both upon mineralogical characteristics and upon methods of grinding and sizing and may thus be partly changed or modified by changes in practice . There is so little known of the chemistry and physics of the various processes in which talc is used that the purchase and sale of talc is governed more by rule- of- thumb methods dependent upon individual opinion and often , prejudice , than by accurate , standard tests . This not only causes unwarranted price fluctuations , but injures both the producing and consuming industries by creating false ideas of the suitability of talc for various uses . It thus seems important that present tests be standardized and made uniform for the whole industry , and that new tests devised to fill the existing gaps .

This report presents the findings of an investigation into the characteristics of a number of techniques for cleaning ambient air with special emphasis on their applicability to the removal of the short-lived radioactive decay products of 222-radon, the so-called " radon daughters" that have been identified with the induction of lung cancer in underground uranium miners. The purpose of the study was to review the requirements for control of radon daughter concentrations in mine air, and to examine all techniques whose feasibility has been demonstrated in principle and which in our judgment would be capable of meeting those requirements. The study has included a review of all pertinent literature, both technical and proprietary, on the subject of the control of miner exposure to the radon daughters and in the area of potentially applicable air cleaning technology. Information about the nature of the problem and about the experience of the uranium mining industry in applying air cleaning methods to its solution was obtained by visiting mines where such methods are in use, and by written correspondence and telephone conversations with other industry sources. Information on performance characteristics and costs of applicable air cleaning methods and equipment was obtained from the experience of our own engineering staff and by visits, interviews, and correspondence with manufacturers of industrial air cleaning equipment.

Measurements and analyses were conducted of whole-body vibration aboard seven commercially available passenger and/or recreational vehicles: sedan; sport-utility vehicle (SUV); pickup truck; moving truck; motorcycle; all-terrain vehicle (ATV); and boat. The purpose of the testing was to measure and assess whole-body vibration exposure in a range of typical vehicle environments in order to gain understanding of typical exposure levels characteristic of activities of daily living. Vehicle models tested (and model year) were: Ford Taurus (1995); Jeep Cherokee Sport (2000); Toyota Tundra SR5 (2002); Ford F-350 (1997); Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic (2004); Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4; and Steiger Craft Model 21 Montauk. All vehicles were tested with their standard factory-installed seats and were operated under a range of normal operating conditions and speeds typical of intended vehicle use. Methods The measurement, processing, analysis, and exposure assessment methods follow the guidance of generally accepted, national and international consensus standards relevant to the evaluation of whole-body vibration, including ISO 2631-1 [1] and ANSI S3.18 [2]. Seats were instrumented with low-mass triaxial accelerometers mounted in seat pads. Accelerometers used in the test are specified to have flat frequency response over the frequency range of 0.5 to 80 Hz, and all accelerometers were recently calibrated traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Seat pads were installed following guidance in the relevant standards [1, 2], with sensitive axes of the accelerometers following the standard coordinate system with respect to the seated occupant. (The x-axis represents fore-aft motion; the y-axis represents side-to-side motion; and the z-axis represents vertical motion with respect to the occupant.) Vibration data processing and analysis, including filtering, sampling, frequency-weighting, averaging, summation, and determination of basic and additional metrics followed procedures in the relevant standards [1, 2]. Digitized time series data were acquired and stored using a PC-based data acquisition system. Whole-body vibration exposure analyses were conducted via post-processing. During data processing, recorded periods of seat acceleration that were identified and verified as resulting from occupant-induced motion rather than vehicle motion were excluded prior to exposure analysis. Particles of nickel flash furnace malle (45 per cent i) were oxidized in a dropping-particle furnace. The particles melted and the molten drops simulated those produced by the atomization of molten matte. The partly oxidized droplets were quenched and then reacted with silica flux to form high-grade matte (70 per cent i) and a fayalite slag. This paper describes the experimental equipment and deals with chemical aspects of the investigation such as volatile impurity distribution and thermodynamic considerations. The overall behaviour of minor elements such as Cu, Co, As and Pb was similar to that observed in conventional converting.

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non Bureau publications. After relining one of two blast furnaces and enlarging its sinter plant in 2009, BlueScope radically restructured its Port Kembla steelworks operation in 2011, shutting a blast furnace and halving its total production. This drastic move in response to unprecedented raw material prices relative to achievable steel prices was like that of many integrated steelmakers worldwide facing similar challenges. The 2011 restructure also saw major changes in the amount and type of iron ores and ferrous burdens purchased, and a fundamental reappraising of ‘value’ in iron ores. This paper outlines the changes to raw materials purchases from 2011 to 2017, how BlueScope has responded to the changes in pricing and raw materials quality, the effect on the sintering and blast furnace processes at Port Kembla resulting from higher gangue content, some of the broad technical and economic challenges faced by steelmakers confronted with lower quality iron ores and how BlueScope is meeting those challenges.CITATION:Di Giorgio, N, Bennett, A, Osborne, B and Chew, S, 2017. This paper is directed at interested parties outside the Beach Sand Industry : the scope is quite broad. The geomorphology described is a successful working hypothesis which guided the author during prospecting and pegging campaigns : the author is not an expert in this field. The test data used in the text, for illustrative purposes, is original and may constitute a contribution to the state of the art. The operation- al and design philosophy embodied in the text is personal and describes the author's methods : all practising exponents would differ in some degree amongst themselves on these subjects. In this paper, no criticism of any existing operation or brand of equipment is intended and names are used to maintain a real contact with the subject matter. The author believes that the operational and design techniques evolved in the Beach Sand Industry under continual duress, have a wider application in the mining industry. This glimpse of the Industry is intended to enhance the respect for the present and past members. Space does not permit individual acknowledgements.

"The Vanuatu island arc and its adjacent back-arc basins form part of the southern New Hebrides subduction system in the southwestern Pacific Ocean within a triangle defined by the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji (Meffre & Crawford 2001). The back-arc region east of the volcanic front is characterized by three structural depressions namely Vate, Erromango, and Futuna (from N to S), also known as the Coriolis Troughs. Earlier studies of lava compositions reveal the occurrence of highly evolved alkali-rich dacites as well as ankaramite basalts within the individual troughs (McConachy et al. 2005).Here we present the first mineralogical and geochemical analyses of hydrothermal fluids and precipitates (sulfides, sulfates, Fe-oxyhydroxides), sediments, and volcanic rocks, sampled during the "Coriolis Volcanism and Vents" (COVOLVE) cruise SO229 in July 2013 aboard the German R/V Sonne. The samples were retrieved during several ROV Kiel 6000 dives directly from the newly discovered active vent sites at the neovolcanic Nifonea Ridge, and from multiple sites at water depths ranging between 200 to 2800 m within the Vate and Futuna Troughs as well as from the shallow water Epi Caldera NNE of the Coriolis Troughs (Fig. 1)."
