Leading Article from "British Medical Journal," London, 4th, November, 1944.Assuming that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid, Denny, Robson, and Irwin thought that if the solubility of siliceous material retained in the lungs could be suffciently reduced the usual fibrotic response could be diminished or prevented. They discovered that aluminum powder rendered siliceous material insoluble in vitro by coating the silica particle with a thin film of gelatinous hydrated alumina, which on drying formed crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate. The presence of this adsorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was shown by staining it with aurin. That metallic aluminum dust produced no fibrosis in the lungs was demonstrated by dust-inhalation experiments on eight rabbits. Attempts were therefore made to prevent silicosis by mixing quartz with metallic aluminum dust.Animals exposed to quartz dust developed typical silicosis in about five months, but the addition of 1 per cent. aluminum powder prevented this even after exposure had been lengthened up to 22 months, provided the aluminum powder was of a particle size below 5. This year Crombie, Blaisdell and MacPherson have reported the treatment of 34 silicotic miners by the daily inhalation of fine aluminum powder freshly ground from small aluminum pellets in a specially constructed mill. Daily treatment began with five-minute inhalations, which were gradually increased to 30 minutes. Some of the men received 300 treatments, but the majority only 200. Out of the 34 cases thus treated clinical improvement was manifested by lessening or disappearance of shortness of breath, of cough, of pain in the chest, and of fatigue. In 15 cases the condition became stationary and remained so in spite of continuous employment in silica dust throughout the treatment. The progress of the disease was assessed by means of tests for respiratory function repeated at three-monthly intervals. Obviously this treatment cannot be regarded as a cure for silicosis, since it cannot restore lung tissue which has undergone fibrotic change; but Crombie and his colleagues believe that the inhalation of finely particulate aluminum powder offers every prospect of preventing the development of human silicosis.In view of these findings, it is surprising that repeated papers by Goralewski from Germany describe various types of lung disease attributed to aluminum dust, and press for them to be scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act in that country. Seven hundred workers were investigated. They were making, probably by a stamping process, aluminium powder containing about four milliards of particles of dust per grain, and are reported as complaining of dry cough with pain on breathing, shortness of breath, poor appetite, and gnawing abdominal pain. In response to the appearance of excessive convergence of bolted gateroads in the front abutment zone of retreating coal faces at Phalen Colliery, staff from the CANMET Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory in Sydney, N.S. initiated a programme of roof profile measurements in the front abutment zone of longwall headgates. The results of these measurements allowed a characteristic deformation curve to be determined for each headgate, and the early identification of areas showing an unstable deformation trend. These areas were then reinforced with supplementary support. The monitoring programme was adopted and enlarged by the rock mechanics staff of the Cape Breton Development Corporation, and has been continuing for a period of approximately two years. A sufficient quantity of data now exists to be able to make an assessment of the effects of a number of mining parameters on the performance of the gateroad in the front abutment zone. The following paper describes the method of measurement, illustrated by typical results, and goes on to relate variations in rate and patterns of movement to geology, interaction, method of support and pre-mining stresses.

Additional testing of two prototype instruments for the discrete detec­tion of submicrometer particles in metal and nonmetal underground mines is described. The detectors are designed to utilize properties of submicrometer particles to distinguish between those produced by fires from mine ambient particles primarily resulting from diesel engine exhaust. One instrument is based on the ability to pyrolyze fire produced parti­cles, but not diesel exhaust particles. An alarm is produced when the ratio of pyrolyzed to unpyrolyzed particles exceeds a preset value. The other detector utilizes a continuous flow ion chamber preceded by a denuder to remove charged particles. Discrimination against diesel produced submicrometer particles results because the diesel particles are naturally more highly charged than fire produced particles. In-mine testing was conducted over a period of several months. Both in­struments exhibited an ability to discriminate against diesel exhaust. However, problems with the recording equipment, and with the instruments themselves, due to large ambient dust particles, prevented enough data from being obtained to choose between the two methods. Recommendations to correct the problems are made.

"INTRODUCTION Although galena is the most common lead-bearing mineral, is easily concentrated by gravity methods, and is readily susceptible to flotation, nevertheless some galena-bearing orebodies have within them small deposits of lead ore that fail to give a high recovery when treated by the customary milling methods.The secondary minerals, cerussite and anglesite, which result from natural oxidation of galena, cause losses when the customary method of lead-ore concentration is practiced. The identification of oxidized lead-ore minerals and the efficient concentration of a lead ore taken from the oxidized portion of an orebody which has previously yielded poor recoveries mere the objects of a recent investigation. Thus the ore examined was selected from a large orebody. The work was undertaken at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.DESCRIPTION OF OREThe ore was of a brownish color owing to oxidation of some of the iron minerals to limonite. The lead content was 6.80 percent, and a cursory examination showed that most of the lead was present as galena. Small amounts of sphalerite, siderite, and pyrite were readily identified. The chief gangue mineral was dolomite, accompanied by smaller amounts of calcite and glauconite."

During the past 15 years the Bureau of Mines has made and published several hundred analyses of typical petroleums and has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crude oils. In describing crude petroleum frequent reference is made to the "base" of the oil, a usage the petroleum industry has found convenient. As part of its general study of the characteristics of crude oils, therefore, the Bureau of Mines has developed a system of classifying them according to "base." This system as first published in 19274 was limited to four classes and in its original form is no longer considered adequate. Since the system was first published the Bureau has analyzed a large number of crude oil-, including representative samples from nearly every important producing field in the world, and has found that the system of classification could be revised and amplified to advantage. The revised system is presented herein. Bulletin 2916 states that many oil producers and refiners use the word "base" much as it is used in pharmaceutical work. For example, the "base" or "basis" of an ointment or salve is the fatty material (lard, petroleum, or lanolin) used as a vehicle or carrier for the active medicinal principles. Apparently many of the pioneers in the petroleum industry considered crude oil similar in nature to these medicinal products in that it consists of a semisolid, nonvolatile base and 1 volatile portion can be distilled off to make gasoline, kerosene, and other products. Many crude oils when chilled slowly deposit a waxy material (paraffin); this fact may have been one reason for the use of the term "paraffin base" in referring to such oils. Almost all of the petroleum first discovered in the United States was of this nature; not until the oil industry was extended to California and along the Gulf coast was petroleum found that contained no wax but apparently did contain asphaltic material Accordingly, these oils were known as "asphalt-base" oils. The use of this term, however, seems unfortunate, as better-grade oils of this type contain little if any asphalt; the descriptive term "naphthene base" now seems to be a more desirable term than "asphalt base." The term "intermediate base" is also used commonly in referring to oils intermediate in oharacteristios between those of paraffin and naphthene base.

The resultant load vector is the representation of the forces applied to a longwall roof support element by caving strata into a single, quantifiable measure of support resistance. The relatively complex kinematics of the shield support prohibit a determination of support resistance simply by summation of leg forces. A method is being investigated by the Bureau of Nines to determine the resultant load vector by instrumenting supports with pressure transducers and strain gages to measure leg, canopy capsule, and lemnisoate link forces. This concept has been laboratory tested in the Bureau's Nine Roof Simulator. Functional relationships among variables have been assessed, and confidence intervals have been established for prediction of the resultant load vector parameters.

The Pilbara Block is a nucleus of Archaean rocks which lies in the North West Land Division of Western Australia, and it constitutes a mineral province that has been divided into two areas-the West Pilbara Goldfield and the Pilbara Goldfield.In the West Pilbara Goldfield two contemporaneous environments are represented by laterally equivalent volcanic and sedimentary successions which together comprise the Roebourne Group. The two successions are lithologically similar to the classical Warrawoona (volcanic) and Mosquito Creek (sedimentary) successions of the Pilbara Goldfield; but in the West Pilbara Goldfield there is no sign of the erosional break which separates the Warrawoona Succession from the Mosquito Creek succession. The Roebourne Group and the igneous rocks which have intruded it belong to the Archaean Pilbara System.Evidence of preconsolidation movement and igneous intrusion into unconsolidated sediment suggests that tectonism and igneous activity, localized along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement, beganbefore lithification was complete. Movement was primarily vertical, and persisted into the Lower Proterozoic.Vulcanicity and chemical sedimentation, accompanied by a diminution of detr:tal sedimentation, is thought to have caused a relative enrichment in the metal content of the middle part of the Roebourne Group; and the metal may have been remobilized during diagenesis and metamorphism, and localized in zones of dislocation formed both before and after consolidation of the sediments.INTRODUCTIONThe name "Pilbara" has been widely applied in the area under discussion, and to avoid confusion the various uses are summarized below.1. "INTRODUCTIONThe renaissance in gold and silver recovery technology has continued to unfold and it is appropriate to review some of the useful new technologies as well as try to identify some of the industry's future needs and frontiers.The remarkable strengthening in the US dollar has resulted in a relatively low gold price in US Dollars of around $310/oz at the time of writing and silver at $6.25/oz. This general softening in the dollar prices and the recent confusion as to environmental compatibility of cyanidation tailings and effluents, has led to a slowdown in announcements of new operations. Another reason for the slackening off in the USA is that in the past few years a large part of the capital has come from oi I and gas companies that now seem to be losing interest in mineral ventures, and foreign investors for whom the dollar is becoming out of reach. In the author's opinion this represents an unprecedented window of opportunity.Elsewhere in the world where local currencies have weakened, the price of gold is at or close to its all time high.For example, in South African Rands, the gold price was R571.00/oz when the rand was US$1.47 and the gold price reached US$800. Now at US $309/oz and with the Rand at US$0.51 = Rl .00, the local gold price is R600. The price of si Iver in Mexican pesos is not much less than it was when silver reached US$50/oz. Gold, and silver prices in local currencies outside North America are still buovant and at levels where additional investment in new projects is more encouraging.Even in Canada where the dollar is worth about US$0. 75, this provides a smaller but significant cushion compared with US operations. Considering the present strength of the US dollar and even the Canadian dollar relative to many other gold producing countries, there should be significant investment opportunities at today's prices. Mining companies have started to descend on Brazil, for example, where in a matter of just a few years annual gold production has increased from 10 to 70 tons. In South Africa, a Canadian company backed by Swiss financing has been able to take over a Witwatersrand gold mining operation and is installing a huge new tailin9s retreatment plant to process about 1 million tons per month of tailings."

The Australian mining sector is undergoing a significant transformation with the adoption of advanced technology to the operational landscape. This has highlighted a critical disconnect between our traditional educational systems and the skill requirements of working with these advanced technologies. This paper aims to provide a behavioural science analysis of how the traditional manufacturing mindset, deeply rooted in our educational frameworks from primary to tertiary education, registered training organisations (RTOs), and in-house learning and development, is misaligned with the needs of today’s technologically advanced mining operations. Originating in the industrial revolution, the manufacturing mindset prioritised efficiency, mass production, and the division of labour. In educational institutions, this translated into an emphasis on rote learning, linear examinations, and a rigid adherence to processes and procedures. Such a system, while effective in producing a workforce suited for repetitive and predictable tasks, falls short in fostering skills like problem-solving, adaptability, flexibility, and coping with change – skills that are increasingly vital in a mining sector dominated by automation, robotics, and AI. The paper discusses how the focus on disciplined adherence to standard work procedures and processes in educational and training programs has inadvertently stifled creativity and autonomy in learners. This issue is compounded in the workplace, where employees, having been conditioned to operate within strict guidelines, now face the challenge of adapting to environments where autonomous decision-making and creative problem solving are crucial. In essence, the traditional approach to education and training has prepared individuals for a world of work that no longer exists. This paper advocates for a whole of pipeline approach, grounded in behavioural science, to revamp mining education and training. It highlights the importance of understanding and influencing the behavioural aspects of learning and recommends for an approach that promotes diversity, critical thinking, and adaptability, preparing the workforce to excel in the rapidly changing landscape of the Australian mining sector.

Despite the dramatic initial growth and success of their Ikhwezi Colliery near Delmas, Mpumalanga, Kuyasa?s experiences offer some sobering arguments for significant changes to mineral rights ownership, the attitude of financial institutions and government policy if South Africa is to have a dynamic and successful junior and small-scale mining sector.

Underground or In-situ Coal Gasification (UCG or UICG), though not a new concept, is now attracting considerable global attention as a viable process to provide a "clean" and economic fuel from coal. Applying improved UICG technology to gasify deep, thin, and low-grade coal seams could vastly increase the amount of exploitable reserves. However, it is imperative that further development of this technology is based on integrating UCG practices and potential environmental impacts with accepted sustainability frameworks and processes. This paper evaluates the potential of UCG to conform to frameworks such as MMSD (Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development), Natural Step and Green Engineering, in order to define its "sustainable" potential. The paper also discusses the potential contributions of UCG to sustainability during its design, operation, closure, and post-closure phases.

Ore from the Hill 50 Gold Mine, consists essentially of pyrrhotite, with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and gold, replacing "jaspilite." The gold is associated with the sulphides as shotty particles. About 8 per cent. of the particles are less than '0.010'mm.The Hill 50 Gold Mine, at Boogardie in the Murchison goldfield, about 300 miles north-west of Kalgoorlie, was first operated in 1898. From 1898 to 1917 it yielded 20,000 short tons of ore for a recovery of 6,225' fine oz. gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 6.22 dwt. gold per ton.The present company since the beginning of its operations in September 1936 to June 30, 1954, produced 811,081 short tons of ore for a recovery of 242,554 fine oz. of gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 5.98 dwt. gold per ton.The grade of ore (recovery grade) has shown a remarkable variation with depth. From the 120 ft. Ievel to the 300 ft. level, it averaged about 7.5 dwt. Au per ton. Below the 300 ft. level it declined, and from 300 ft. to 400 ft. averaged 4.9 dwt. per ton, falling further with increasing depth to about 4.5 dwt. per ton at the '600 ft. level.On the 820 ft. level the grade improved sharply to about 14 dwt: per ton, and this grade has persisted down to and on the 1060 ft. level.The orebody has been described by Finucane (1953) as a series of lenses of finely banded jaspilite conformably enclosed by greenstones. The jaspilite is tightly folded and faulted and intruded by dykes of felspar porpnyry.Mineralization is practically restricted to the jaspilite.

Deepwater discharges of sulfide flotation tailings have been practiced for several decades. Oxygen penetration and organic matter content in such environments are the two major factors that determine their reduction-oxidation condition and hence the rate of sulfide mineral dissolution under such discharge environments. In this study, the effects of solution redox potential and pH on the dissolution of some heavy metals from sulfide flotation tailings were examined. Zn, Pb and Cu concentrations in solution were all higher at a higher redox potential and lower pH. Dissolved Zn concentrations reached 100 ppm even at a low redox potential of 105 mV and near neutral pH after 33 days. Pb concentrations were below 2 ppm at 105 mV and near neutral pH after 165 days. At 105 mV, the Cu concentrations were below 0.2 ppm at near neutral pH after 165 days. At pH 2.3, the Fe concentrations were higher at 420 mV than at 105 mV. But at pH 6.8, the Fe concentrations were lower at 420 mV than at 105 mV, due to the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and the subsequent precipitation of ferric hydroxide. Arsenic concentrations in solution were all less than 0.002 ppm. For Zn, Cu and Fe, no significant differences were observed between the tests in solutions prepared using seawater and those using distilled water. However, Pb concentrations reached higher levels in solutions prepared using seawater.

In the context of the following report, an hazardous location can be described as any industrial area in which flammable or explosive gases, vapors, and dusts can be encountered. When electrical apparatus is used in such hazardous atmospheres, the chance of a dust or gas ignition is ever present. Consequently, in an effort to reduce the ignition hazard, several protection systems have been devised. Such systems are termed electrical hazard reduction techniques. The most widely accepted and used of these, the explosion-proof enclosure, is the principal subject of this report. However, other techniques are briefly mentioned. Hazard reduction techniques used in coal mine atmospheres (which can contain methane, coal dust, and air mixtures) are classified as Group I. The explosion-proof enclosure commonly used in mines is defined by the USBM Schedule 2G as a device that can contain internal explosions of methane-air mixtures without undergoing damage or excessive distortion and without an ignition of a surrounding methane-air mixture or discharge of flame. (100) Internationally, the definition remains the same except the words "discharge of flame" are not present. (4,5,31,42,52,76,102) The latter description often refers to flame-proof enclosure construction, but the terms "flameproof: and "explosion-proof" commonly have the same connotation. These enclosures which may not be vapor tight, are distinguished by heavy-wall cast or welded construction and bolted or threaded close fitting flanges.

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is a 6.92 kilometer (4.3 mile) long major toll bridge span that crosses the northern San Francisco Bay in a highly seismically active region. Tutor-Saliba / Koch / Tidewater JV was contracted by Caltrans to conduct a comprehensive seismic retrofit. The JV provided geotechnical planning and quality control services as described herein, under normal oversight by Caltrans. Part of the robust foundation retrofit design included the installation of 26 new, large diameter piles, including eleven 3.81 m (12.5 ft) diameter, cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) marine piles that were drilled 9.15 m (30 ft) into the bedrock beneath the Bay, where the water depth ranged up to about 21.3 m (70 ft). These reinforced concrete-filled composite piles have a steel shell permanent casing from the bridge substructure pile cap through the water column and 30.5 to 39.6 meters (100 ft to 130 ft) of marine sediments to the top of rock. This paper discusses construction, inspection (ranging from the QA employed in the planning of the CIDH pile installation methods and equipment to the actual construction inspection required for the routine installation of the shafts), problems that were encountered during construction, and the solutions that were developed and implemented. Inspection, particularly with the usual difficulties in the marine environment, coupled with the difficult and complex bedrock conditions was particularly challenging, and ranged from non-destructive testing to "in-water, inshell" diver inspection. Similarly, the complexities of dealing with both the steel casing "riser" and the associated drilled shaft (rock socket) portion of these composite foundation elements created some unusual issues. The paper also presents important lessons learned from the project.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines - mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental - as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies - and hence no two development projects - are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource project's development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as `doing a feasibility study'. But the principal purpose of a `feasibility study' is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant - they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a project's viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of `feasibility studies' and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

The Waihi-Waitekauri region hosts numerous low-sulfidation epithermal deposits that both outcrop and occur at depth. Zones of intense hydrothermal alteration enclose the Au-Ag bearing quartz vein deposits. Hydrothermal alteration includes the destruction of magnetite by hydrothermal fluids, pervasive silicification adjacent to quartz lodes and potassium enrichment due to adularia and illite deposition. High-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric, and new gravity data delineate distinct geophysical anomalies associated with hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation. Five magnetically quiet zones occur in the region varying in size from 3 to 34 km2 and in geometry from circular to irregular zones. These zones represent the near-surface extent of strong to intense hydrothermal alteration associated with fossil geothermal systems. All epithermal deposits in the region occur in magnetically quiet zones. Over 120 new gravity stations together with existing data across the Waihi district have defined a positive Bouguer gravity anomaly coincident with the magnetically quiet zone. Eastern and western gradients of 50 gu/km bound the anomaly that contains two flat gravity highs west and east of the Waihi deposit. Strong potassium signatures in airborne radiometric data correlate with outcropping zones of alteration and are consistent with the presence of adularia and illite minerals. Hydrothermally altered zones are represented by areas of low Th/K ratios as a result of low thorium concentrations in andesite and elevated potassium levels in altered zones.
