Electrorefining yttrium from selected low-melting yttrium--base alloys is investigated, and various halide systems are studied as potential electrolytes for use in preparing low-oxygen yttrium by electrorefining unalloyed yttrium. Yttrium cathode products having significantly less metallic impurities than the anode materials were prepared from alloys containing nickel, iron, and manganese by electrorefining in LiCl-YC13 electrolytes at 900° to 1,000° C. Yttrium-copper and yttrium-magnesium alloys are not suitable as anode feed materials, An evaluation of chloride, fluoride, bromide, and mixed chloride-fluoride electrolytes showed that cathode products containing much less oxygen than the anode material can be obtained in the fluoride and mixed chloride-fluoride systems. Initial cathode current density has no apparent effect on the purity of the products obtained in both phases of the investigation.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the cost of mine permitting and compliance with environmental regulations in Alaska. It discusses permitting requirements and procedures for placer and lode mines. Placer miners must comply with recently established (1988) water quality regulations and effluent treatment requirements. To estimate the impact differing treatment options (no recycle, 100% recycling, and flocculation) have on a placer mine's rate of return, three models (1,500, 1,000, and 500 yd3/d) were simulated. Rates of return for these models show a marked decrease as effluent treatment is increased. The incremental increase in operating cost from one treatment option to the next is relatively small; however the opportunity cost of lost production if' significant and accounts for the decreasing rate of return with increased effluent treatment. Lode mines face greater costs for permitting and compliance than similarly sized placer mines as a result of the impact of the operation. Direct permitting costs for lode mines range from 2 to 6% of total project cost, with 4% the most common figure cited by industry. Total costs for permitting and compliance are approximately double those for permitting. Indirect costs associated with compliance include mitigation, monitoring, and reclamation.

Burnout Control is a process developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for accelerating the burning of wasted coal fires in situ, while at the same time controlling the heat and fumes produced. The Albright fIre project is a fIrst fIeld trial of Burnout Control as applied to a coal waste bank. An exhaust ventilation system was designed and constructed and then operated over a 1-year period at the site of an existing abandoned mine land fire near the town of Albright, WV. While predicted exhaust gas temperatures of 900° C and thermal power levels of 5 MW were achieved at 20-to 3O-in H20 vacuum levels, problems were encountered with engineering designs, equipment breakdown, and fuel-rich combustion that curtailed the time period of satisfactory operation. Effective afterburning of the exhaust gases (as they were drawn from the bank) corrected the problems associated with combustion stoichiometry and led to high thermal outputs. It is believed that with (1) improvements in engineering design and construction, (2) better control of the afterburning process, and (3) the use of conventional stack gas air-pollution controls, Burnout Control can be applied successfully to a coal waste bank fire.

This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change in coal seam inclination, Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in, diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, productlon to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. Over the last twenty years, roof support technology has made numerous advances since the original wedge and slotted bolts of the 1950's. By comparison, the roof supports used today are more complex and specialized than the supports used in the past, providing mines with a varied selection of supports from which to choose. As a result, when problems with supports are encountered, it is more difficult to determine whether it is the result of geological changes, poor installation practices, or malfunctioning supports. Recognizing this problem, MSHA's Roof Control Division of the Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center, has undertaken the task of publishing a guide for trouble¬shooting problems encountered with roof support systems. The purpose of this guide is to provide a logical sequence to resolving the most common problems encountered with roof supports. The objective of this paper is to introduce this guide to the mining industry as well as provide insight into the evolution of the guide from its beginnings as rudimentary charts to its more comprehensive present format as a practical guide for use by the mining commu¬nity.

THIS paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, rang-ing sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration.

This paper reports the results of the field demonstration campaign of a new process for removing and destroying ammonia from mining/ metallurgical effluent solutions. The 50-day campaign was carried out at a uranium plant in Saskatchewan, Canada. The process was developed by adapting and integrating two well established technologies: zeolite adsorption/ elution to extract the ammonia from the effluent stream and to produce a concentrated ammonia eluate; and conversion of the ammonia in the eluate to innocuous nitrogen by applying bacterial nitrification-denitrification (NH3 = > NO3 - => N2). The data show that reasonable target criteria were met, under very challenging operating conditions. Problem areas and possible causes for poor performance are identified. Preliminary and generic cost estimates of the process are also presented.

In a continental environment, sediment mobilisation, dispersion and deposition are mainly controlled by mass gravity and streamflow processes. Alluvial sedimentary systems have an important economic value because of their capacity to host mineral resources. In the Hamersley Province, alluvial iron deposits (including the well-known detrital iron deposits and channel iron deposits) play an increasing role on the commodity market. Alluvial deposits exploration is challenging and generally involves geomorphologic and stratigraphic field studies, as well as expensive exploratory surface sampling and drilling. We applied a new surface processes modelling technique to investigate iron rich material, ie the erosion product of bedded iron formations -dispersion in the Hamersley Province. LECODE is a 3D-parallel surface processes forward modelling code designed to compute surface flow and solve erosion, transport and sedimentation on the geological time scale. The code offers new quantitative ways to better understand how sedimentary deposits develop in intra-continental and channel environments. Here we show that our integrated forward model is capable of opening a window to the construction of sedimentary architectures, including facies distribution, deposit thickness and development of heterogeneities such as mineral traps over the modelled domain. The model results represent 1 Ma of surface evolution and are validated through comparison to published paleovalleys map and known occurrences of iron ore deposits. This numerical modelling approach allows for the first time to track alluvial materials from source to sink through time, test existing geological models and faithfully reproduce the first order distribution of alluvial iron deposits in an area of interest. This work strongly suggests the presence of iron rich alluvial deposits reserves under cover, in unexplored detrital fans in the Fortescue Valley. This method, potentially coupled with sediment geochemistry and basin analyses studies, has the potential to maximise alluvial iron deposits exploration success, while reducing exploration cost and associated environmental impact.CITATION:Duclaux, G, Salles, T and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. A calculation programme of finite element method has been developed in order to study the behavior of excavation with sheet piling in soft clay. Based on a series of isotropically consolidated-undrained tests (CIU) on Hangzhou clay a linear relationship between the normalized initial tangent modulus number, E1, and stress-path parameter, a, is found for four different stress paths, and stress-path dependent modulus equations derived. Meanwhile, several influence factors, such as embedment depth and stiffness of the wall and soil conditions, were taken into consideration in the programme. Some valuable conclusions were obtained. Finally, a case history was studied by the proposed method of calculation. The result of calculation and the field observation are in good agreement.

The vision-based approach to process control involving fine particles in harsh on-line environments is discussed in this paper. The sensor equipment at the process location, consisting of a light source and a CCD camera provides RS-170 B&W video output. The video can be seen on a process monitor in the control room and is sent to a computer based Vision Processor. The Vision Processor contains a video digitizer and Canty developed software that extracts process information. The iron mine application controls thickener agent feed rate and thus settling pond overflow clarity. The sensor is mounted in the overflow flume of the outdoor settling pond and is used year around in the Minnesota weather. Alternate control system needs a low flow water sample which is subject to freezing in winter. The computer based vision processor provides 4-20 mA analog outputs for real time control as well as file archive for a history record.

The platinum mining industry has experienced a significant increase in fatal accidents. Mine accidents are in principle preventable, and there is enormous pressure on employers to reverse this trend. This paper reviews safety management systems (SMS) as well as behaviour-based safety (BBS). Based on the review, SWOT analyses are performed on the SMS and BBS processes and a model of an integrated safety management system (ISMS) is introduced. A number of fatal accidents is analysed to identify factors that contributed to accidents in the mining industry. Thereafter the potential weaknesses of an SMS of a platinum mine are exposed and the potential benefits of implementing the ISMS for this case study are demonstrated.

Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989. Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90 per cent of the gold in the bottom seven metres. The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below. Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced. Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken. While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mechanics of fuming of iron-carbon melts during top-blowing with oxygen. Melts weighing 45 lb were prepared in an induction furnace and blown with oxygen by means of water-cooled lances. The rate of fuming was measured and correlated with the operating variables. The data showed that the primary cause of fuming was a boil at the bath surface in the impingement zone of the oxygen jet. Nucleation of the carbon monoxide bubbles producing the boil was apparently brought about by the precipitation of an oxide phase. The actual fuming mechanism involved partial oxidation and vaporization of bubble films and fine metal spray generated by the bursting of the bubbles. Bubbles that formed outside the impingement zone produced little fume. The distribution of trace elements between the metal and fume strongly indicated that the fume contained fine spray particles as well as particles that had condensed from vapor. The rate of fuming was found to be proportional to the carbon content of the metal) the concentration of oxygen in the jet) and the bath temperature) provided that a continuous boil occurred. In the absence of a boil) very little fume was produced.

The Mt Tom Price orebody of Hamersley Iron Pty Limited consists of a folded hematite - shale sequence capped by a layer of goethite. Consequently, variations in iron content occur within the ore body, and as the overall grade is below that required to make specification products, selective mining must be carried out. A necessary preliminary to quality control of products based on selective mining is the production of advance data on the tonnages and grades of material to be expected in future mining areas. Bench plans showing zones of different grades and types of material anticipated are prepared from structural geological information. The grades of materials on a bench are essentially governed by the positions and attitudes of the shale bands. Quality control is exercised by blending different grades and types of material in primary crusher feed. Iron grade is the prime grade consideration although sometimes the level of phosphorus content must be considered. Pre-production grades are determined from assay of samples taken from blast hole cuttings. As shales are more friable than hematite, product fines are always lower in iron grade than the lump product. The realisation of contract specification grade is more difficult with fines than with lump, so maintaining the correct fines grade becomes a prime factor in quality control. Control of fines grade is presently effected by aiming for an appropriate feed grade to the primary stockpile. Studies to estimate fines grade directly by qualitatively taking into account material types are in progress. Quality control measures are checked by monitoring the crushing and screening plant output, and taking appropriate compensatory actions in the mine when required. Minor fluctuations in quality of fines can be blended out on stockpiles. The quality control measures described ensure constant quality products, and a good recovery of high grade material from the deposit.

This study analyses the results of a pilot trial of a newly developed armed-chained stone-cutting machine. The machine was developed in Turkey and trialed at the Kaklik/Kocaba travertine quarries in the Denizli District. An armed-chained cutting machine is an alternative to the diamond wire cutting method more frequently used in the production of natural stone quarry blocks, and increases production efficiency and quality. Since there is no need to collapse the blocks using the armed-chained cutting production process, there is no risk of the block developing cracks. This results in a considerable increase in the efficiency of natural stone block production. The armed-chained cutting machine is easier both to assemble and run when compared to other block cutting methods. This process resulted in the production of a larger number of blocks at a lower cost within the same time frame, particularly in travertine quarries and in all other natural stone quarries. The block efficiency in travertine quarries was calculated as 65?80%using the armed-chained cutting machine, compared with 7?14% using the normal diamond wire cutting method.

Maintaining ground stability in the gate roads, particularly the tailgate, has always been critical to the success of longwall mining, both in terms of safety and productivity. Several new support technologies have been developed in recent years to replace conventional wood and concrete cribbing for secondary roof support. Since their performance characteristics are unique, the best practices that have been developed with conventional wood cribbing may not be applicable for these alternative support technologies. Therefore, with so many options to consider and the importance of achieving adequate ground control at minimal cost, the trial-and-error approach to longwall gate road support is no longer prudent. This paper discusses a design methodology for standing secondary tailgate supports. This design technique requires in-mine measurements of tailgate support loading and convergence to establish a tailgate ground reaction behavior based on support and strata interaction. The methodology uses the performance characteristics generated in the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to match the stiffness and load characteristics of various supports to the measured ground reaction behavior. It can be used to determine the appropriate application of alternative roof support systems or to design in-mine trials so that a fair and equitable comparison of different support systems can be made. A case study of the methodology at a western Pennsylvania mine site is presented in the paper, including a comparison of four alternative support technologies to the conventional wood and concrete cribbing historically used at this particular mine.

The Bureau of Mines is doing research and development work on a coal-fired gas turbine plant initially developed by the Locomotive Development Committee, (LDC) of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. The Bureau is redesigning the turbine blading and some of the auxiliary equipment, and is reerecting, the plant at the Morgantown (W. Va.) Coal Research Center. The present goal is a 1,500-hour run at virtually the same operating conditions used by the LDC in their final 1,100-hour test with the turbine. This will allow the Bureau to properly evaluate the new blade design. Erosion of the turbine blades (particularly the roots) by ash in the hot gases from the combustion of coal was the most serious problem in extended operation in earlier experimental work. New blades made of Stellite6 are being fabricated for the stator and rotor, and armored wear strips of titanium carbide will be inserted in the blades at the areas of probable maximum ash velocity and concentration. The trailing edges of the rotor and stator blades are being thickened and thinned, respectively, to induce the ash to travel to the casing and prevent it from returning to the base of the rotor blades. The first stage rotor and second stage stator blades are being removed to provide an annular space for maximum quantities of coal ash to centrifuge to the casing. Additional blades will be added to most of the rows in the stator to stop secondary flow of dust-laden gas toward the rotor. A contract has been awarded for fabrication of the new blades. The 1,500-hour run will be started as soon as the new blades are installed.
