WHEN Dr. Horace Fraser, your President, invited me to speak to you today I advised him in confidence that I was leaving my present positions on April 30th. In the circumstances it seemed to me that this audience might prefer to have as its speaker one who wo.uld J1ave a continuing association with the atomic energy programme. Dr. Fraser was kind enough to suggest that my re-marks might he of special interest to you, since I would be able to sum up my views on the atomic energy programme. I hope that I will not disappoint him or you on that score. I am particularly pleased that my last public appearance in my present positions should be at the Annual Convention of the C.I.M. since, as all of you know, a very important part of my work has been in the mining field. As it happens, my first public address on the subject of atomic energy and its raw material -uranium -was made at your Annual Convention in Montreal in April, 1949. It seems fitting that my final address should also be made at this convention -nine years later.

The Permian Red Bed copper deposits of the South Central States are a potentially important resource. Only the higher grade, near-surface ores are now exploited because conventional froth flotation does not recover oxidized copper minerals which comprise 10 to 15 percent or more of the copper content of typical ore. Laboratory-scale beneficiation studies were initiated to devise a method capable of recovering both sulfide and oxidized copper mineral. Testing established that the high clay and gypsum content of typical ore prevented effective flotation of the oxide mineral using sulfidizing, fatty-acid, or oil emulsion techniques. A modified leach-precipitation-flotation (L-P-F) procedure recovered over 90 percent of the copper, compared to a recovery of 77 percent obtained by conventional sulfide flotation. The higher costs of the L-P-F method would reduce the increased revenue from higher copper recovery. An increase in copper price and/or an increase in oxide copper content of the ore would make the L-P-F process comparatively more attractive.

Copper-Nickel ores in northeastern Minnesota could establish a new industry in a region where underground mining has not been active. This study reviews geotechnical data relevant to the selection and design of underground mines in this region and by numerical structural analysis evaluates the importance of some geotechnical parameters to mine method selection. Because of the rapid development of computer modeling many new techniques have become available for modeling rock mass behavior in recent years. An overview of these methods is presented and their applicability to mine design reviewed. Methods included in this summary were the differential continuum models, such as finite Pint and finite difference, integral continuum models, such as boundary element, displacement discontinuity and boundary integral equation methods, and discontinuum methods such as the distinct block model. The displacement discontinuity method was used to evaluate the influence of geotechnical parameters on some aspects of mine design. Three problems; room stability, pillar stability on a weak inclined contact and sill pillar thickness influence on sill pillar stability, were analyzed to evaluate the relative importance of insitu stress field and joint properties on design. It was concluded that for stability analysis the initial horizontal stress is of most importance in all aspects of design. The position, orientation, persistence and strength of joints is also of primary concern. In a more general sense, however, it was concluded that detailed geotechnical parameters have much less influence on mine method selection than more general factors such as rock quality, initial stress state, orebody shape and economics.

India is the third largest producer of coal and the fourth largest in terms of coal reserves in the world. However, new research quite ironically projects that despite the continuing growth in domestic coal production, the country’s exploding economic growth will position it to be the biggest coal importer by 2020. India’s inability to meet the domestic coal demand is mainly attributed to low rate of production, increasing stripping ratio, non use of appropriate technology etc. of coal mining operations here. Presently Indian surface mines which have to shoulder the onerous responsibility of augmenting the coal extraction rate at an even brisker pace are mulling bigger, better and more efficient operations ensuring commensurate rise in stripping work as well. This mammoth task can be accomplished only by deploying smart technologies. In this perspective, cast blasting of overburden emerges on the horizon as a promising alternative for enhancement of the production and productivity of Indian open-pit coal mines.

A two-year study focused on current noise exposure levels in the South African mining industry, aimed at helping the Mine Health and Safety Council of South Africa meet its milestones for eliminating noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Methods A multi-task methodology was adapted from international baseline studies to determine the exposure to noise in both large-scale and small- to medium-scale mines. Results On average, 66.7 per cent of the employees sampled in year 1 and 78.4 per cent in year 2 were exposed to noise levels of above the 85 dB A legislated occupational exposure level. Conclusions Information obtained through the study could be developed into a national personal noise exposure database, including audiometric results, equipment noise emission levels and initiatives for noise engineering control by mines and equipment manufacturers to facilitate targets of eliminating NIHL. The combination of digital technology and on line spectroscopy enables the development of intelligent instruments for composition and particle size analyses in real- time high- frequency control conditions. In many industries, the applications result in productivity improvement and energy savings. Plant specific examples include operating experience and benefits realized in sorting, blending and beneficiation processes. Instruments of the future not only measure specific parameters of the process and monitor its own health combined with self-corrective mechanics but also acts with intelligence to effect the quality of the process or regulate the primary apparatus.

The pig iron nugget process is gaining in importance as an alternative to the traditional blast furnace. Throughout the process, self-reducing?fluxing dried greenballs composed of iron ore concentrate, reducing-carburizing agent (coal), flux (limestone) and binder (bentonite) are heat-treated. During the heat treatment, dried greenballs are first transformed into direct reduced iron (DRI), then to transition direct reduced iron (TDRI) and finally to pig iron nuggets. The furnace temperature and/or residence time and the corresponding levels of carburization, reduction and metallization dictate these transformations. This study involved the determination of threshold furnace temperatures and residence times for completion of all of the transformation reactions and pig iron nugget production. The experiments involved the heat treatment of self-reducing?fluxing dried greenballs at various furnace temperatures and residence times. The products of these heat treatments were identified by utilizing optical microscopy, apparent density and microhardness measurements.

This study is the extension of an investigation of reclamation of floodplain areas in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District, Idaho, that are unuseable in their natural condition, by construction of landfills with mill tailings. The study develops a valley-wide tailings disposal plan to utilize 20 potential landfill sites on floodplain areas and presents measures for reclaiming the sites for subsequent productive use. Field and laboratory testing on a test section and two abandoned impoundments support the use of hydraulically deposited tailings for landfill construction. Hydrological testing has shown that controlled discharge from tailings impoundments results in contaminant levels in the discharge below regulated standards. Additional testing indicated that compacted soil liners and pond management provide adequate contaminant abatement where acid-generating tailings are encountered. Mechanical compaction, including surcharge loading, upgrades foundation support capacity so that construction on the surface of tailings deposits is feasible. On completion of the testing program, the test sections were abandoned and rehabilitated. Details concerning potential landfill sites have been refined. At recent production rates, the 20 sites would result in 680 acres of reclaimed land, while providing a minimum of 40 years of tailings storage capacity. A general design has been developed for the retention dikes. Aspects of embankment stability, including liquefaction are discussed, and are shown to provide an adequate factor of safety under the anticipated range of operating conditions.

Tiedback walls are now recognized and accepted as a good solution for a variety of structural problems: ? Retaining Walls and Bridge Abutments in cut situations ? Landslide stabilization ? Repair/support of existing walls Acceptable techniques have been developed for anchoring in cohesive and granular soils and in any kind of rock. Methods have been developed for adequately protecting tieback tendons against corrosion and for testing every tieback to verify its long-term load-carrying capacity. However, the major problem that the industry faces today is how do we get constructable and economical tiedback walls contracted for and built with minimal claims. This paper will explore the issue of "constructability" through a look at specific problems from actual projects. From a research report from the Construction Industry Institute, Austin, Texas (1986), constructability is defined "as the optimum use of construction knowledge and experience in planning, design, procurement and field/operations to achieve overall project objectives." Maximum benefits occur when people with construction knowledge and experience become involved at the very beginning of the project." The design and installation of tiebacks has been developed primarily by specialty contractors; each contractor has evolved its own methods of performing the work, and consequently, many of the techniques are patented and proprietary. The real question is, how do we make effective use of this knowledge and experience during the design phase of the project?

This report presents the theory and design of a stiff loading machine used by the Bureau of Mines. The machine incorporates three high-strength steel columns as the restraining member in parallel with the specimen. The theory presented gives the basis of design and the dimensions of component parts of the machine. Laboratory verification of the theoretical stiffness is described using three different setups involving a hydraulic jack and spacers and confirms the stiffness calculations to within 1 percent. Experimental techniques, testing procedures, and special equipment designed for determining the complete stress-strain behavior of NX cores of both hard and soft rock are described. Typical test data are presented as force-displacement curves for two rock types, a marble and a granite.

Michigan is becomining one off the important oil-producing States of the country, The amount of crude oil produced within its boundaries has increased from only 4,000 barrels in 19253/ to nearly 16 million barrels in 1935.4/ The Bureau of Mines method of crude-oil analysis and classification indicates that the oils from the several producing fields are predominantly paraffin-intermediate-base, wax-bearing crudes. In general, they will yield 25 to 35 percent of highly paraffinic gasoline and about the tame amount of kerosene and gas-oil combined, 12 to 15 percent of lubricating oil stock, and 20 percent of residuum with a carbon residue of about 6 to 7 percent. In addition, there appears to be some correlation between certain properties of the crude oils and both the geographical location and geological structure of the oil-producing areas within the State. These general conclusions are based on the analytical data presented in this report, which is one of a series of papers that record the general characteristics of crude oil from the many producing fields of the United States. This report discusses briefly the oil fields of Michigan and the characteristics of the crude oils produced from them. The analyses of 15 samples are given. A recent correlation for multiphase vertical flow by Hagedorn and Brown1,7 has been used to examine the effect of numerous variables such as pipe size, gas-liquid ratio, liquid flow rate, liquid viscosity, liquid surface tension, oil API gravity, water cut, etc., on flowing pressure gradients. Most previous correlations were derived by using a form of the general energy equation which assumed negligible changes in kinetic energy. Under certain flow conditions this can lead to serious errors in predicting pressure traverses. Examples of traverses calculated both with and without the kinetic energy term are included here. The Chew and Connully correlation for calculating changes in viscosity with changing pressure and temperature has been extended so that the effect of a changing viscosity with depth on pressure gradients can also be predicted. Examples illustrating the effect of tubing size show the importance of this correlation in determining pipe sizes for initial well completions. Limitations on production rates in small pipe sizes from excessive friction losses can be predicted with greater accuracy. The combined use of a vertical-flow correlation with a horizontal-flow correlation provides a method for determining the maximum flow rate possible from both flowing and gas-lift wells. Examples are included to illustrate application of the combined use of vertical and horizontal-flow correlations in optimizing production rates and minimizing excessive costs from over injection of gas in gas-lift wells. INTRODUCTION The problems of multiphase vertical and horizontal flow are immediately encountered in any producing well. Fig. 1' shows three stages of production: flow in porous medium, vertical flow and horizontal flow. All three stages affect the production rate from a well. If we are confronted with a particular well and consider only the variables involved in the vertical and horizontal stages of Fig. 1, we should be capable of calculating the flowing bottom-hole pressure necessary to produce a particular flow rate. A change in any of the variables results in a new solution to the problem. Recent approaches in developing horizontal and vertical-flow correlations have improved to the extent that the solution can now be obtained with more confidence than previously. VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL FLOW CORRELATIONS Since Poettmann and Carpenter's' original work in multiphase vertical flow, there have been many additional vertical-flow correlations developed which have greatly improved the accuracy of pressure-loss calculations. A geotechnical monitoring program has been implemented at Energy West Mining Company for enhancing site-specific evaluation of longwall stress conditions. This program consists of underground measurements at five locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon Coal Seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on recorded seismic events and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program together with detailed geologic mapping of longwall gateroads. In conjunction with the measurement program, the authors have completed detailed boundary-element stress analyses of the mine plans. Models have been calibrated using the data from in-mine instrumentations and then routinely used for evaluation of mine plans at depths approaching 2,600-ft. The work has improved our understanding of load transfer, seismicity and yield pillar performance. It has identified areas of potential increased stress levels at certain longwall face positions and provided guidance to measures that could be considered to mitigate the potential for these increased stress levels.

Crude oils from fields throughout the world are analyzed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the characteristics of the oils and their contribution to the petroleum resources of the world. Analyses are reported for 169 foreign crude oil samples from 122 oilfields in Africa, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, North America, and South America. Tables show the geographic and geo- logic origin of the samples, names of companies that supplied the samples, annual production for the fields, general characteristics and analytical and computed data, hydrocarbon-type data, cumulative production of the larger fields, and references to sources of geological and field development information. The analyses were made by the Bureau of Mines routine method and comparisons may be made with more than 8,000 other such analyses.

"In a COREM-McGill collaborative research and development project, gas dispersion parameters and froth properties were manipulated in a copper flotation plant to study interactions between the collection and the cleaning zones. In this paper, specific work on developing some relationships between operating conditions and froth stability in a rougher column flotation cell of 125 m3 is reported. Froth stability, measured by image analysis, was related to the following process conditions for specific flotation machines in an industrial case study: Gas flow rate, collector dosage, pH, frother type and dosage. Across the range examined, froth stability was improved through a decrease in gas flow rate and/or increasing frother dosage. Metallurgical results (grade and recovery) showed that both gold and copper were dependent on froth stability.INTRODUCTIONMcGill and COREM have over the past two years collaborated in a research and development project to merge gas dispersion parameters, frother analysis (McGill technology), and froth properties (COREM’s imaging system) to study the interactions between the collection zone (pulp) and the cleaning zone (froth). The main goal is to increase knowledge of flotation cell hydrodynamics since it is known to govern the metallurgical performance of the flotation process (Power et al., 2000). In this paper, specific work on developing some relationships between operating conditions and froth stability in a copper flotation circuit is reported.The objective of this work is to study gas dispersion in a large volume flotation column (hydrodynamics) and to measure its impact on the froth. By froth imaging, it is possible to diagnose operational problems on the basis of froth characteristics (Bartolacci et al., 2005a) and consequently, to propose ways of improving process performance by froth analysis (Bartolacci et al., 2005b).Another approach to froth characterization is investigated in this paper. In the same flotation column, a froth stability apparatus (column) was included (Triffet and Cillers, 2004). The mechanical froth stability apparatus is used to link “hard” froth characteristic measurements to “soft” froth characteristic measurements (those obtained by imaging)."

"Environmental desulphurisation is an attractive alternative for the management of acid generating tailings. Non selective froth flotation is the most commonly used method to produce desulphurized tailings, as shown from many previous works (McLaughlin and Stuparyk, 1994; Bussière et al., 1995; 1998; Benzaazoua et al., 2000a,b; 2002). This process can reduce the volume of problematic tailings to manage, by making a sulphide fraction concentrate. The desulphurized tailings can then be used as a moisture retention layer in a cover with capillary barrier effects to prevent acid mine drainage.In this paper, the authors present the results from different laboratory and pilot scale flotation tests which confirm that low sulphide, non-acid generating tailings can be produced by froth flotation. It is also demonstrated that the sulphide concentrates obtained from desulphurisation, when mixed with binders gave good long term results in terms of mechanical behaviour, thus demonstrating that the sulphide fraction can be used for paste backfill material. From previous work (Bussière et al. 1998, 1999) on the evaluation of the operating and capital costs of the desulphurisation process for different ore types, the use of desulphurized tailings to create a dry cover was then studied for several scenarios. The desulphurisation process was compared with other technologies (underwater disposal, engineered soil cover) currently used to prevent acidic drainage (AD) for a new mining operation and the advantages and disadvantages of desulphurisation are presented as well as the costs of this method of AD prevention.INTRODUCTIONThe principal environmental problem of the mining industry today is the generation of acidic drainage (AD) resulting from the natural oxidation of the sulphides in mine tailings. This phenomenon involves the generation of acidity which increase the amounts of toxic metals in the waste water released into the environment by a mine. The environmental impact of the AD has been described in detail in previous work (e.g. Down et Stocks, 1977; Ritcey, 1989; Gray, 1997; Ripley et al., 1996; Aubertin et al., 2002)."

IN January last I published in the Engineering and Mining Journal a table giving, with a considerable degree of accuracy, the production of anthracite coal for the year 1874. At that time it was impossible to give any correct estimate of the production of bituminous coal, for the returns I had been able to secure from such distant and scattered districts were not always forwarded punctually, and the work of -obtaining anything like a true estimate of the coal mined in districts from which I was unable to obtain official returns was both laborious and tedious. As will be seen from the detailed reports furnished herewith, I have succeeded in obtaining tolerably accurate returns of 20,093,704 tons; and upon careful revision by numerous well-informed local authorities, my first estimate of the amount of coal not officially returned to me has grown very considerably; indeed, as I get more information on the subject I find that our bituminous coal production greatly exceeds the amount we have been accustomed to hear it placed at, aggregating as it does, 26,465,704 tons. Mr. Andrew Roy, State Inspector of Mines for Ohio, has reported the production of Ohio at 4,168,445 tons, while his first estimates were but 3,820,000 tons; and similarly, in other cases, the more full the returns direct from the mines the more incorrect do I find all previous reports. I am able now to furnish, not an accurate statement, indeed, but by far the most full and reliable one that has yet been published of our coal production. The amount of labor involved in obtaining this admittedly imperfect report has been simply enormous. In the following tabular statement it will be perceived that Pennsylvania produces nearly one-half of all the bituminous coal mined * Since this paper was read fuller reports from some of the States whose production had been "estimated" have modified the figures given. The most serious error is in California, which produces probably 200,000 tons less than these figures. Oregon and Washington territories also yield smaller amounts than here reported; but these reductions are probably fully compensated by fuller reports from other States that were here underestimated. The correct aggregate amount will not vary much from that here given. Early in 1876 I will be able to give a fuller and more accurate report for the year 1875.

The Limpopo Metamorphic Belt is a complex geological terrane with at least three major deformational events. Tectonically juxtaposed lithology, open to isoclinal folding, crosscutting and re-activated shear zones and metamorphic gneisses and schists make pit slope design and maintenance a risky business. Venetia diamond mine?s Cut 3 is planned to reach 360 m by 2011. The difficult rockmass created problems in the original pit and a new more comprehensive slope design was necessary. Nearly 9 km of geotechnical drilling were undertaken to produce a new geological model and provide geotechnical information near the final Cut 3 face. All existing data from the pit were brought together into a database. SRK Consulting were brought into the project to audit the process and provide most of the manpower for the data analysis. Existing failures were back-analysed and the geotechnical domains identified. Analyses of only the southern domains are discussed in this paper. Geotechnical engineers can design slopes at any angle, but it is up to the managers at the mine to decide what risk they are willing to accept in a slope design. Once the issue of risk was discussed and settled in respect of the consequences of failure, each of the main geotechnical domains were analysed to produce a slope design at5% probability of failure with 15% above the first ramp. A risk assessment of the design was then undertaken to determine what risk the design placed on the equipment, personnel and the profitability of the overall mining operation. The risk assessment indicated minimal risk to the operation. One of the main assumptions of the final design is that the pit slopes will be dewatered. A project was immediately put in place to determine a groundwater model for the mine and to thereby determine the best dewatering procedure. However, it should be obvious that it is practically impossible to prevent benches from getting briefly saturated with water during storm conditions. It was therefore necessary to look specifically at supporting the crests of the ramps in the problematic southern domains to guard against the possibility of crest failure during heavy rains. The data available were re-analysed toward this objective. Spiles were recommended as the most cost-effective support system, and a probabilistic approach was used in the design. The final design has a 5% probability of failure, and the analyses indicate a strong sensitivity of the required spile spacing to the strength of the reinforcement material that will eventually be used. The pit slope parameters derived as per the discussion in this paper have just begun to be implemented at Venetia Mine.

The Golden Cross Gold Mine Project is now fully operational and into its second year of operation. Because of its location in the sensitive Coromandel Peninsula , strict water management and environmental requirements had to be met. This led to the development of new technologies for cyanide recovery and the adoption of advanced water management and water treatment systems. This paper discusses the water management and treatment system adopted for contaminated water at Golden Cross and provides data on the operational history to date.
