"Falconbridge’s Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region, has been in operation since December 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,000,000 tonnes per year. Optimization of the ABC grinding circuit has proven to be the most challenging component of this capacity increase. Concurrent flotation circuit modifications have allowed concentrate grades to increase from 16 to 18 percent nickel, while maintaining recoveries. Concentrate drying problems encountered during the first 15 months of operation have been addressed through equipment upgrades. The challenges associated with surface deposition of filtered tailings in an arctic environment are now better understood, and detailed design of the progressive reclamation cover is underway.GRINDINGCircuit OverviewOre from open pit and underground mining operations is introduced to the underground ore handling system via surface and underground truck dumps. Two underground bins with a combined capacity of 4000 tonnes provide roughly a day of live capacity for ore storage. Ore from the two bins is conveyed to a 150 tonne surge bin immediately ahead of the grinding circuit in the concentrator.The Raglan grinding circuit has a conventional ABC configuration (Figure 1) with a design capacity of 100 mtph (800,000 tonnes per year). The 24’ AG mill is powered by a 3000 hp motor with variable speed drive. AG discharge is sized on a 8’x16’ single deck vibrating screen, with screen oversize recirculating to a 5 %’ short head cone crusher (400 hp) before returning to the AG mill. Screen undersize is combined with ball mill discharge to feed up to 5 15” Krebs hydrocyclones. The ball mill is a 14’x 21’ overflow mill driven by a 3000 hp motor at 73% critical speed. Target Pgo for the grinding circuit product is 65 microns"

With ever-increasing demand, low-grade complex ores and strict environmental regulations, metallurgical processing options have become limited. Heap leach technology provides several benefits to combat these issues including low cost, flexibility and diversified process conditions. This paper provides an overview of heap leaching technology with specific emphasis on chemical aspects. Hence, influencing factors, advantages and disadvantages, testing approaches and some fundamentals will be discussed. Finally, heap leach technology for different ore types (copper, nickel, uranium and gold) will be briefly compared.

WHEN work was begun in September, 1910, on the rock excavation for the foundation of the gigantic dam at Valhalla, N. Y., which is to convert Kensico lake into an important storage reservoir of the Catskill Aqueduct system, one of the first steps taken by the contractor, H. S. Kerbaugh, Inc., was the development of a quarry to supply the stone needed in the construction work.The importance of a bountiful supply of suitable rock in an accessible location is apparent when it is considered that nearly a million cubic yards of cyclopean masonry will be contained in the completed structure, not to mention dimension and facing stones, concrete blocks, and mass concrete. The dam structure will be over 1800 ft. long and about 170 ft. above the present river bed. However, for a distance of some 800 ft., it will be carried down to solid ledge rock, which will make the finished structure about 300 ft. in maximum height. It will be about 200 ft. thick at the base and directly beneath the coping it will be 28 ft. thick. This dam will raise the reservoir surface 110 ft. above old Kensico lake. The reservoir capacity will be 29,000,000,000 gal.-equal to New York's total needs for over two months. The contract price for this work is nearly $8,000,000 and is second only in amount to the cost, over $12,600,000, of the Ashokan Reservoir work. Fig. 1 is a view of the dam site.

"Resource development in northern Canada has special requirements which derive from the unique environmental and eco-logical nature of the northern environment. In this paper several case histories in which the Permafrost Research Section of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) has participated are used to illustrate how geophysical methods may be used to address some of these considerations. Although some of these examples were developed while examining problems directly related to oil and gas development and transport in frontier regions, such or similar methods also have application to mining problems.IntroductionA critical parameter is the distribution and thickness of permafrost, which in northern Canada varies from being a few metres and discontinuous at the southern limit to thicknesses in excess of 700 m in the Arctic Islands'!'. Figure I is a schematic diagram of typical ground thermal conditions in a permafrost zone. The upper zone is defined by an active layer which undergoes a seasonal freeze/thaw cycle. In the simplest case, the ground remains permanently frozen below the active layer to the depth of the O°C isotherm, which is defined as the base of the permafrost. Water chemistry, pore structure and pore or grain size may cause the base of the frozen ground to be above the permafrost by up to 100 m(2). Ice can be found within the permafrost in the pores of solid rock or sediments, as massive ice within unconsolidated sediments or as ice lenses within fissures in a solid rock mass. The mining technique used in these conditions, whether open pit or underground, can differ considerably from that used in southern Canada. In the high Arctic, for instance, the dry drift method is feasible underground in the permanently frozen host rock. The frozen nature of the wall rocks can obviate water-related problems."

The present computerized mine planning systems use CAD-like and Data Base Management System (DBMS) environments for the handling of numerical, textural, and graphical data. These two environments are usually integrated, that the data provided by the DBMS are linked to any graphical element rendered by the CAD system. The subsidence monitoring, analysis and prediction process should be integrated with the mine design process. It should allow for the assessment of impacts of mining on surface, surface utilities, and structures. It should also provide for the measures to control mining, that will create only acceptable levels of negative impacts on the surface. The common data base, and graphical capabilities of the CAD interface, may be used with great advantage for both systems. The findings of the subsidence engineering modulus should be directly incorporated into the mine design system, and vice versa. In this paper the author suggests guidelines for the development of the comprehensive computer system, able not only to predict the vertical and horizontal components of the ground movement, but also assess the induced surface damages, and costs related to subsidence prevention and compensation.

High temperatures encountered by mine rescue teams during emergency situations may cause severe physiological strain, hindering the men from carrying out rescue and recovery missions. A prototype ice-cooling garment (ICG) was developed by the Bureau of Mines to alleviate physiological strain due to heat stress. The effectiveness of the garment was tested with acclimatized and unacclimatized subjects at a typical work rate (1,200 Btu/hr) expected during rescue operations and at various hot environments (97° to 113° F dry bulb and 80° to 89° F wet bulb). During exposures with the ice cooling garment, the subjects were able to maintain a safe deep body temperature of 100.4° F or below Without the garment, the deep body temperature rose beyond values of 100.4° F, a condition considered unsafe for continuous work in hot conditions. Both heart rate and skin temperature values were lower while wearing the ICG. Subjective observation also indicated a marked benefit by wearing the ICG.

In the summer of 1979 the University of Minnesota Mobile Laboratory (UMML), designed for the analysis of airborne particles and gases was used to study fugitive dust from an open pit coal mine. The analysis consisted of determining the particle size distribution and concentration of dust from various mining operations, such as blasting, draglines, loading, roadways and bottom scrapers. For some operations the particles size distribution and concentrations were determined at varying distrances. Details of the dust concentration within the plumes as the plume passed the UMML were measured with an optical particle counter. For line sources, such as roadways this enabled the calculation of the particle flux at the sampling location. In addition to the standard instruments associated with the UMML, the applicability of some new instruments were investigated. These included a uniform deposit cascade impactor and a flux meter. Finally, a technique in identifying plume origins which utilized elemental X-ray flourescence analysis of filter samples was shown to be effective.

The tube bundle system is an integral part of an underground coalmine’s gas monitoring system. The maintenance of these systems is vital to ensure the quality of the data produced. Integrity testing of the tube bundle lines is required monthly, as specified in Standards Australia AS/NZ 2290.3 (1990). The various forms of integrity testing are reviewed, including pressure testing and introduction of a known gas. This paper provides a recommended and standardised methodology for those techniques where none currently exists. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis is performed. The parameters considered for the SWOT analysis include resourcing required by the mines, time for the testing to be performed, and quality of the results produced. The suitability of such integrity testing protocols to be used in a mine emergency situation is also evaluated.CITATION:Forrester, L, 2017. As part of the Bureau of Mines titanium resources examination program, samples of altered rock (saprolite) and unaltered rock from the Roseland anorthosite near Roseland, Nelson County, Va., were tested for amenability to beneficiation by flotation. A flotation technique was developed to produce bulk concentrates of ilmenite, rutile, sphene, and leucoxene. It was necessary to first float apatite using oleic acid as the collector, in an alkaline pulp with dextrine as a titanium mineral depressant. The titanium minerals could then be floated from the apatite tailing, using fluosilicic acid to depress the remaining apatite, morin to depress ferromagnesian minerals (when present), and oleic acid as the collector. A bulk titanium mineral concentrate, analyzing 66.0 percent Ti02 and 0.08 percent P205, was obtained from a sample of the unaltered rock which contained 5.45 percent TiO2 and 2.81 percent P205. Overall recovery in the concentrate was 47.1 percent of the total TiO2 in the ore. About 55 to 65 percent of the saprolite sample was clay and was removed by attrition scrubbing and decantation. The apatite prefloat procedure was applied to the saprolite sands; subsequent titanium mine: 1 flotation recovered 72.2 percent of the Ti02 in a bulk concentrate containing 65.1 percent TiO2 and 0.20 percent P205.

During the summer of 2015, Unisea Inc. sought proposals for the G1 Dock Replacement Project in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. It would be a one year project and construction was scheduled to begin in the spring of 2016. One aspect of the project was the requirement for a layer of armor stone to protect part of the dock. An estimated 30,500 tonnes (37,670 t) of armor stone were needed for the project. The source of rock was the Unisea Quarry due to its proximity to the project and the quality of the stone meeting all the required technical standards.

As cities are growing all over the world, the need for urban transportation facilities are on the rise. Designers (of these facilities) today are faced with a number of constraints for their design, of the most is the space limitation and impact of new construction activities to the community. A typical subway station, as the focus of this paper, is approximately 600 to 1000 feet long, 50 feet wide and 2 to 3 story high. With such a large volume of construction activities, it is easily realized why underground stations are becoming obvious choice for larger cities eventhough the cost could be 2 1/2 to 3 times as much as an aerial station and 4 to 5 times that of an at-grade station [O'Neil et. al.(1977)]. Since cost is an important factor which is always increasing, therefore, the designer should have a good planning, consider alternatives for design and come up with a realistic design with minimum impact to the community. This paper is about the geotechnical considerations that the designer should be aware of. PLANNING A 1977 report [O'Neil et. al.(1977)] on the construction costs for a number of underground subway stations indicate that about 4 0% of the cost is site-controlled, 35% is structural items, and 25% is finish and equipment. It is seen that of opportunity exists for cost savings in the site selection and proper use of the site. Once the site is selected, the cost of construction become controlled by urban conditions at the site, geotechnical conditions, station size and depth. Therefore, the design-solution is very much site-specific. The geotecnical designer should collect the following information at the early phase of the design:

Rock mass classification is widely used throughout the underground mining industry—in both coal and hard-rock mines. It is used in all stages of the mining process, from site characterization to production operations. The goal of the International Workshop on Rock Mass Classification in Underground Mining was to provide a forum for leading practitioners of rock mass classification to come together and share their methods and experiences with the technique. The workshop was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on May 31, 2007. It was co-chaired by Christopher Mark, Ph.D., P.E., National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh, PA, and Rimas Pakalnis, P.Eng., University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. The proceedings of the workshop contain 16 invited papers from 9 countries, reflecting the international depth and breadth of current practice. Applications in both hard-rock and coal mining are well represented. Some of the topics that were addressed at the workshop include: • Major rock mass classification systems used in mining and their variants • Collection of input data through observation, rock testing, and geophysics • Design of mine layouts and rock support systems using classification • Estimation of rock mass strength and other input parameters for numerical models from classification • Applications in weak rock, raise boring, cavability assessment, and other special topics • Risk assessment using rock mass classification

Detailed investigation was carried out on the dephosphorization of a number of phosphorus-rich manganese or samples of India by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid. Various process parameters like concentration of acid, liquid-solid ratio, temperature of leaching, time of leaching, and particle size of the ore were studied in detail for the three samples of manganese ore from central India, and optimum values were worked out on a laboratory scale. Preliminary studies show that certain ores which are not easily amemlible to appreciable dephosphorization by leaching with dilute sulphuric acid can be made amenable by :roasting to 700-900°C before leaching.

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: The database: a pre-requisite for large-scale use of AI in mining). Artificial intelligence is a term which has been widely applied to different techniques including rule-based systems using inductive and deductive logic algorithms, neural networks, learning systems and genetic algorithms. In principle it should be applied to adaptive statistical techniques. Some of these applications have been coded in languages which are specifically suited to the novel requirements of AI but are not easy to integrate with more traditional computing methods. Efforts have been made to bridge the gaps, particularly with database management systems and such efforts at integration should provide the key to future success in the application of AI. A field which has been termed "knowledge engineering" cannot be credible as such if it fails to provide easy access to raw materials of "knowledge" i.e. the data residing in databases. In the mining industry there are a number of significant areas in which AI could usefully be applied throughout the industry, but its advance is slow because of the lack or inefficiency of such database links. Current development of object-oriented database systems for geology and mining holds out hope for such integration in the foreseeable future

"This paper reviews the evolving Ontario mining regime for mining industry-Aboriginal engagement and its apparent alignment with court decisions, domestic law, emerging international norms, mining industry rules, and mining firm-Aboriginal agreements, drawing on publicly available commentary from government officials, the private sector, and Indigenous communities. Mill filling is an important operational parameter in a SAG mill circuit and by its control and optimisation it can produce significant improvements in production capacity and energy efficiency. However, it is industry practice to report mill load as the total output given by load cells, or kPa for systems based on lubrication bearing back pressure, rather than the actual percent total mill filling.Ball trajectory is another critical parameter as overthrow can result in accelerated liner wear and possibly liner failure whilst underthrow can result in reduced grinding action. The assessment of ball trajectory cannot be done in isolation as the toe of the charge needs to be determined to make any meaningful assessment. Thus both total percent mill filling and mill trajectory are critical parameters; however neither is reported or available to metallurgy or processing teams in real time or a regular basis.In this study the performance of a fixed speed SAG mill was assessed and optimised by employing mill trajectory models and using the JKMRC power model to calculate percent total mill filling. Power Curves, which correlate ball filling, mill filling and mill power, were also developed. The Power Curves, with additional knowledge from the trajectory models allowed for the identification of optimal operating regions for the mill.CITATION:Toor, P, 2015. This report on tungsten in Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel Counties, Colo., is one of a series describing results of studies on the tungsten potentialities in Region III, Bureau of Mines. The San Juan tungsten deposits occur in an area of 250 square miles, centering near the common corner of Ouray, San Juan, and San Miguel Counties (fig. 1). Field work supporting these studies was done in May 1954. Bureau of Mines reports prepared from investigations made during World War II and under the Defense Production Act of 1950 were reviewed.
