In the past ten to fifteen years, many organizations have applied business process re-engineering (BPR) to significantly improve their business competitiveness or stave off closures. The mining industry in Southern Africa is no exception and documented examples can be drawn from South Africa. Although the concept is superficially simple, its application has been marked by a high failure rate of about 70 per cent because it has been generally misunderstood. Shabanie mine, a chrysotile asbestos fibre producer in Zimbabwe took cognisance of this fact by cautiously embarking on a modular BPR programme in October of 2002. A year was used as a complete cycle or module for re-evaluation of the programme. Shabanie mine adopted BPR as part of management efforts to remain competitive amid serious threats to operational viability. These threats included hyper-inflation driven rising production costs, a declining world asbestos market and a possibility that Russia could take over the shrinking world asbestos market by dumping low-priced asbestos fibre. The only competitive advantage that the mine had was the high quality of its long-fibre chrysotile asbestos. The major BPR thrust was therefore to redesign processes for improved productivity and ultimately achieve a lower cost per ton of final asbestos fibre product. In addition, corporate culture change and cost-saving were also factored into the programme. This paper discusses the implementation experience of the BPR programme at the mine. The main BPR beneficial highlights are improved productivity, sizeable cost-savings, positive corporate culture change and identification of secondary projects. One of the lessons learnt from this programme is that mining companies will have to deal with the HIV/AIDS pandemic if they are to sustain high levels of productivity into the future.

ORDINARILY secondary copper, unless electrolytically refined, is reclaimed directly as foundry ingots used in the manufacture of copper-rich alloy castings. This use does not require the elimination of the impurities to the degree required if the recovered metal is to be used for electrical purposes where a high electrical conductivity is of prime importance. However, as a part of the general policy of reusing its own scrap and by-products wherever possible, the Western Electric Co. at its Hawthorne Works is recovering its secondary copper as wire bars which are delivered to its own rod and wire mill and there processed into wire of high electrical conductivity. This departure from the usual recovery scheme has been accomplished through the careful classification and sorting of the material entering the furnace charges and the careful control of the subsequent melting and refining in a reverberatory furnace. Tests conducted over a period of approximately four years have shown that the quality of wire bars produced from selected secondary copper is equal to that of wire bars produced by the electrolytic refineries. The interest which has been exhibited in the process by those who have seen it has prompted the following general description. It is the authors' opinion that the recovery of secondary copper will become more and more an important factor in the copper production industry. The description is largely of the refining furnace and its operation, but it must be remembered that careful classification and sorting of the scrap materials to eliminate impurities are just as important as the furnace operation toward obtaining a satisfactory final product. Classification and sorting do not lend themselves easily to description; they must just be done. It should also be recognized at the outset that constant intelligent supervision is requisite to the success of the process because there are so many ways in which impurities can find their way into the final product.

Rhenium occurs in very small quantities (12).4 In order for the Federal Bureau of Mines to conduct an investigation of rhenium sources and methods of extraction, it was necessary to devise improved techniques for detecting and measuring minute quantities of the metal. A modification of the procedure of Malouf and White (46) was developed which can be used to detect rhenium in concentrations as small as 0.1 part per million and can be used to measure quantities of 1.0 part per million. It can be used for the analysis of siliceous and calcareous ores, of molybdenite concentrates, of fumes, of flue dusts, and of other metallurgical products. Development of the method involved devising an amine extraction procedure for separating rhenium from all interfering elements except tungsten and a selective distillation procedure for separating rhenium from tungsten. Adoption of these separation procedures permits use of large samples and precise determination of rhenium by colorimetric analysis of the thiocyanate complex of rhenium by means of a spectrophotometer.

Mobile roof supports are shield-type support units mounted on crawler tracks. Mobile roof support (MRS) units are used during retreat mining, and they eliminate the setting of roadway, turn, and crosscut breaker posts which are required during pillar recovery operations. Mobiles are a more effective ground support than timbers, and their usage enhance the safety of section personnel and reduces material handling injuries. MRS usage is rapidly increasing, and approximately 40 U.S. coal mines have successfully employed this relatively new technology. This paper is in response to increasing requests from operators, State and Federal Regulatory Agencies, and others on the practical aspects of MRS usage in underground coal mines. During this investigation, nearly half of the U.S. mines which have utilized mobiles were visited. This report depicts the more common pillar extraction methods which operators have found successful. The Christmas tree and outside lift methods are illustrated and discussed. Roof control plans that do not require breaker posts or allow pillar extraction with fewer than four mobiles are also examined. In addition, operators' experiences with setting pressures, loads, and rates of loading during pillar extraction are addressed. Mining and support strategies to more effectively control hillseams, weak roof, and gob overrides which have entrapped equipment are also discussed.

Measurements of the quantity of entrained air within processes have challenged instrumentation developers for years. This is particularly true in the unique and demanding operating environment and applications seen in minerals processing. In minerals processing applications, entrained air plays a role in errors seen within nuclear density gauge measurements and in pumping efficiency. It is also the major component of flotation processes. The measurement of the quantity of entrained air, known as the gas void fraction, can now be performed from the outside of a process pipe through CiDRA?s patented passive sonar array-based technology. Within column cells, the need for a robust, no maintenance, accurate means of measuring the entrained air, known as gas holdup, has resulted in a submersible version of this technology. CiDRA?s meter technology calculates the gas void fraction by first measuring the speed at which naturally occurring sound in the process slurry propagates past an axial array of sensors. These sensors are incorporated in a band that is wrapped around the outside of the pipe, resulting in no process downtimes for installation and unprecedented reliability. A known relationship between this speed of sound and the entrained air captured in the form of bubbles within the slurry is then applied in CiDRA?s meter to calculate the gas void fraction. This paper will present the measurement technology, its operation, its calibration and its application in a variety of gas void fraction and gas holdup measurement situations such as pumping efficiencies, hydrocyclone operation, external sparging, and column cells.

"The Phase I Mill at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan was designed to accommodate a very specific high grade uranium ore. As this high grade ore was depleted, construction was undertaken on a new mill circuit (Phase 2) to process a more conventional lower grade ore deposit.The Phase 2 Mill expanded the ore throughput to 800 tonnes per day. The new process employs crushing, grinding, leaching, counter—current decantation, solvent extraction and magnesia yellowcake precipitation and drying to produce a yellowcake concentrate.This paper discusses the process decisions required for this expansion and outlines the new mill circuit. Included is a review of the start up in August, 1984.1.,INTRODUCTION The Cluff Lake Uranium deposit is located 720 kilometers north of Saskatoon in northern Saskatchewan. A high grade deposit was discovered in 1970 with the first production taking place in 1980 after lengthy hearings. The original mill (or Phase 1 Mill) was specifically designed to accommodate this very high grade ore for a very limited plant life.Pilot plant work was carried out in 1981 on the other lower grade ores found in the immediate Cluff Lake area. Feasibility and process selection studies were then undertaken as the Phase 1 mill was nearing its end of life. These studies were completed in March 1983 when approval was given to construct the new Phase 2 mill."

Shales from 10 locations in Michigan were sampled, tested, and evaluated to determine their suitability as raw materials for producing lightweight aggregate by rotary-kiln methods. Sampling procedures and the geology of the shale units tested are discussed. Preliminary testing in a muffle furnace preceded extensive testing in a l6-inch by 14-foot rotary-kiln. Rotary-kiln products from these shales ranged in weight from 35.5 to 61.2 pounds per cubic foot (pcf). Concrete test specimens made pith selected aggregates were evaluated to determine the qualities of the concrete. Compressive strengths of the concrete ranged from 2,830 to 4,240 psi after 28 days of curing. Unit weight of the concrete ranged from 94.8 to 101.5 pcf. Lightweight aggregate suitable for use in structural concrete meeting ASTM standards was produced by the rotary-kiln method using shale samples from two locations.

Slag-metal equilibrium experiments were conducted at 1500ºC and1580ºC under 0.03 atm, 0.05 atm and 0.83 atm CO partial pressures using silica and Cr-oxide crucibles. The complex slags belonged toSiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO-FeOx-CrOxand the metal phase to the Cr-Fe-C-Si-(S) systems. The carbon saturation of the metal phase was avoided using oxide crucibles and thus the results are pertinent to ferrochromium refining slags and processes. From equilibrium data and thermodynamic calculations, the CrO /(CrO+Cr2O3) ratio in the slag was determined as 0.75, 0.80 and 0.86 under 0.83 atm and 0.05 atm of CO pressure at 1500ºC and 0.03 atm and CO pressure at1580ºC, respectively. The results clearly demonstrated that a higher chromium content of the metal results in higher Cr in the slag, and chromium in slag decreases with increasing SiO2. The results were also sensitive to the crucibles used as these oxide crucibles saturated the slag either with respect to SiO2or Cr-oxides. It was also demonstrated that the relative amount of CrO in the slag was higher when SiO2crucibles were used in accord with thermo-dynamic calculations. Iso-concentration curves for carbon and chromium of the metal phase in equilibrium with the slag were drawn on a pseudo ternary SiO2? (AI2O3+CaO+MgO) ?(Cr2O3+Fe2O3) diagram. The activity coefficients and activities of carbon and chromium of the metal phase were also calculated from the experimental data and available thermodynamics information and were plotted as iso-activity curves in the same pseudo ternary diagram. Many industries base their decisions on the assaying of tiny analytical sub-samples. The problem is that most of the time several sampling and sub-sampling stages are required before the laboratory provides its ultimate assays using advanced chemical and physical methods of analysis. As long as each sampling and sub-sampling stage is the object of due diligence using the theory of sampling it is likely that the integrity of the sought after information has not been altered and the generated database is still capable to fulfil its informative mission. Unfortunately, more often than not, unawareness of the basic properties of heterogeneous materials combined with the unawareness of stringent requirements listed in the theory of sampling, lead to the conclusion that massive discrepancies may be observed between the expensive outcome of along chain of sampling and analytical custody, and reality. There are no areas that are more vulnerable to such misfortune than sampling and assaying for trace amounts of constituents of interest in the environment, in high purity materials, in precious metals exploration, food chain, chemicals, and pharmaceutical products. Without the preventive suggestions of the theory of sampling serious difficulties may arise when making Gaussian approximations or even lognormal manipulations in the subsequent interpretations. A complementary understanding of Poisson processes injected in the theory of sampling may greatly help the practitioner understand structural sampling problems and prevent unfortunate mistakes from being repeated over and over until a crisis is reached. This paper presents an overview of the theoretical, practical and economic difficulties often vastly underestimated in the search for quantifying trace amounts of valuable or unwelcome components.

The Spokane Research Laboratory/NIOSH and the University of British Columbia (UBC) geomechanics group are focusing on the development of safe and cost-effective underground design guidelines for weak rock masses having an RMR in the range of 15 to 45. Weak ground conditions, ground support, and mining methods used in several North American underground mines were observed. The RMR values were calculated to update both manned entry span design and non-entry stability graphs, plus a database on underhand mining methods was created to reflect existing North American mining conditions. The immediate rock mass was characterized and analyzed in terms of prevailing type of ground support, potential failure mechanisms, and rock behavior to define how existing design curves must be modified for the existing weak rock mass. The current NIOSH research attempts to provide rock mechanics tools to assist a mine operator in making sound economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment.

Small replacements of C12-trithiocarbonate (C12-TTC) for dithiocarbonate (DTC)/dithiophosphate (DTP) in a reagent suite for the flotation of platinum group metals (PGM) have significantly improved the rejection of gangue. Coupled to this is an improvement in kinetics, grade and recovery of PGMs. In a pilot-plant trial, after a 5 mole per cent replacement of the current DTC/DTP collector combination by C12-TTC, large opaque bubbles were replaced by small clear ones. In addition, a similar flotation response was realized with one-third of the current depressant dosage. During a preliminary plant trial on underground UG2 ore, the initial rougher concentrates were characterized by higher PGM concentrate grades and this was in part due to improved chromiter ejection. The concentrate produced from the TTC trial also exhibited a much finer particle size distribution. The overall circuit performance, which included secondary regrind and flotation, showed an increase in concentrate grade of approximately 44% while the tailings grade remained unchanged

A simplified conceptual model shows how the arc flank to arc fringe areas adjacent to ignimbritic centres form a prospective zone for natural zeolites. Large alkaline lakes that serve as the repository of voluminous ash-fall tuffaceous material provide the ideal chemical setting for pervasive alteration of silicic glass to zeolites. The unusually old age of the Escott deposit demonstrates that any silicic volcanic province that contains low-temperature, unmetamorphosed sequences is a potential zeolite exploration target and that age should not be used as a criterion to exclude potential areas. It has also been demonstrated that heulandite and mordenite, formed by diagenetic alteration of silicic glass, do not always change to analcite and albite through the ageing process

The use of coal for power generation is being questioned in many developed countries, as a result of ever-tightening environmental restrictions and concerns about the potential impact of CO2emissions on climate. Coal will continue to be the fuel of choice for new power plants for many developing countries with large percentages of the world?s population, because of its relatively low cost and broad availability. Even in many of the developed countries that are under pressure, coal will continue to fuel large percentages of power due to the installed base. Using coal efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner will be a challenge for technology and politics in this new century, with the politics played out on the world stage. Coal use will vary in the next few decades, including short-term changes such as the use of more diverse coals and the increased use of efficient ultra-supercritical boilers to longer term ?refining? of coal to produce a range of energy and chemical outputs. This paper outlines EPRI?s Global Coal Initiative aimed at needed developments and demonstrations that support the long-term vision of environmentally sound and economical coal use for power generation, and discusses some of the forces that are driving this development effort.

A research program to aid development of better and more efficient methods for producing petroleum and increasing its ultimate recovery from underground formations is an integral part of the work of the Bureau of Mines on conservation of the Nation's natural resources. Economic, efficient production of recoverable oil and gas from a reservoir depends to a great extent upon the best and most accurate information that can be obtained from a study of the reservoir rock and its fluid contents. Information on oil and water saturation is pertinent and essential in wildcat, extension, and pool wells for good reservoir operations and prediction of performance. This report presents results of an investigation by the Bureau of Mines of core recovery and degree of drilling-fluid contamination occurring during cable-tool coring operations using oil-base mud. Representative core samples were obtained from 6 major oil-producing sands in 8 fields of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. Field-mixed, oil-base drilling mud was used for the first coring test, and lightweight, premixed oil-base mud, with an organic chloride tracer added, was used in coring eight other wells. Tracer analyses were made to determine contamination of core by drilling-fluid filtrate. Core analyses, including oil and water content and minimum interstitial water-saturation tests, were made on selected core samples to compare and evaluate water saturations determined by the two methods.

A weak airborne radiometric anomaly was examined in the field and the presence of uranium confirmed. Rotary-percussion drilling showed the presence of uranium but a subsequent programme of diamond and rotary percussion drilling indicated that the concentration of uranium was uneconomic. Within the tufts and volcanics of the prospect the uranium existed as uranyl phosphates within the oxidized zone. Geological mapping and the diamond drill core showed that the Stag Creek Volcanics are part of the Lower Proterozoic Masson Formation, probably with member status, rather than the expression of an Archaean basement ridge. This change in the interpretation of the fundamental structure of the Pine Creek Geosyncline has led to a reexamination of the stratigraphy and to suggestions which differ from the current concept.

Numerous different instruments and techniques have been developed for the purpose of measuring rock stress and stress changes around excavations. The interpretation of the output from many of these instruments has often been problematic. This paper covers the research performed in attempting to analyze one particular stress measuring instrument called the Borehole Platened Flatjack (BPF) . The approach used in this analysis was to combine the analytical solution for the displacements around a borehole and the analytical solution for the bore- hole-platen interaction with the empirical stiffness behavior of the flatjack. The resulting model of the BPF response was then verified using measured laboratory data with very good results. In addition, techniques for applying the method to the field are briefly discussed. The major accomplishments of this comprehensive modeling and testing program are; 1) the establishment of the critical installation and site parameters of the hydraulic pressure cell and 2) the development of a systematic procedure for calibrating the cell based on the given values of these critical parameters.

"The most economical way of dewatering mineral concentrates is to reduce the moisture content in the material mechanically using thickeners and filtration avoiding thermal drying whenever possible. In addition to this, the dewatering process should produce low moisture cake, high quality liquid, consume little energy. As a part of the dewatering process The CERAMEC® capillary filter has been proven to meet these requirements in over 150 installations. The filtration is done by using ceramic filter plates with small pore size. The capillary action in the filter medium secures gas free filtration at good vacuum, and due to the small pore size, filtrate is crystal clean and particle free. The energy consumption is minimal. This paper will discuss results from filters installed at Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy in Finland where the technology was has been used since the late eighties. Results from more recent installations like Los Pelambres in Chile and LKAB in Sweden will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe idea of using capillary action to make dewatering more efficient was invented two decades ago. Ten years later whole filter plants utilizing the new method were delivered to mine concentrators for dewatering of mineral concentrates. Further development of ceramic membrane plates made it possible to meet the requirements in iron ore dewatering. In addition to low cake moisture, high capacity and low energy consumption, there are a lot of environmental advantages in using capillary filtration. This paper considers a recently completed hoist project for IAMGOLD. Called the Westwood project, this mine utilises some of the largest drum hoists supplied to the North American Market in recent times. This project is an example of where many of the design features discussed the associated paper, (Robotham, 2011) were incorporated. Director of sales and marketing, Gordon Scott has worked at DavyMarkham for over 30 years in a variety of roles starting as a mechanical design engineer, moving to project management before joining the sales department. Gordon has an honours degree in mechanical engineering from Leeds University.
