Commercd explosives have evolved through this century f?om dynamite through ANFO to the current lines of Water Gels and Emulsions. Water Gels and Emulsions evolved to counter the lack of water resistance and density of ANFO yet maintain its low cost position verses dynamite. Today, explosives must be safe and inexpensive and perform under a wide range of temperatures, function efficiently in wet or dry boreholes and have a good shelf life. Emulsions meet this criterion, which is why they are the current trend products worldwide.

Field tests concerning a fog mesh method for fog removal are discussed. The first tests were performed at the Pyhäsalmi Mine, Finland. As this study gave promising results, further studies were completed at the Orivesi Mine. The results of these most recent field tests are presented and the two studies are compared. The Orivesi test set consisted of four materials. These included air filter fabric, fibrous filter fabric, a plastic greenhouse mesh, and an aluminium mosquito net. The variation of the Orivesi results was more noticeable than what was found previously. The best fog removal effect of all tests was achieved with the aluminium mosquito net, while the plastic green-house mesh performed worst. The humidity reduction by aluminium net was more profound than any of its precedents. More mesh materials will be tested in the near future.

"Twin Metals Minnesota LLC, (TMM) has recently completed a prefeasibility study evaluating the development and operation of an underground copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and gold (Au) mining project on the Maturi deposit in northeastern Minnesota.The Maturi deposit is a magmatic Cu-Ni-sulphide deposit occurring along the basal contact of the South Kawishiwi intrusion, comprised of heterogeneous troctolites to gabbros forming a tabular body designated the BMZ (basal mineralized zone). These rocks provide the major gangue mineralogy (plagioclase, olivine, and clinopyroxene) with local, minor rock-forming orthopyroxene, biotite, magnetite, and ilmenite. Altered silicates exist within local fracture and/or alteration zones, which are commonly associated with minor faults in the regional area. The Maturi deposit is comprised of four main mineralized zones within the BMZ, referred to as Stage 1, Stage 2 (S2), Stage 3 (S3), and Upper Heterogeneous. Chalcopyrite, cubanite, pentlandite, and pyrrhotite are mainly hosted within the S2 and S3 units, with talnakhite frequently occurring within the S3 unit.A cross-discipline approach combining geology, geochemistry, metallurgy, QEMSCAN™ mineralogy, and mine planning has been implemented to develop a preliminary geometallurgical model and life of mine metallurgical performance forecast. This paper provides an overview of the methods that were used to develop the model and forecast, and discusses the advantages of such a model in project development and evaluation.INTRODUCTIONThe TMM Project proposes mining a copper-nickel-palladium-platinum-gold-silver (Cu-Ni-PGM) magmatic sulphide deposit situated in the Duluth Complex of northeastern Minnesota, USA. The prefeasibility study proposes a 45,000 million tonnes per day mine and concentrator facility to produce two saleable concentrates. The mine will access two separate deposits, Maturi and Maturi Southwest. Saleable concentrates are the final products of the sequential flotation plant where a high grade Cu concentrate is produced followed by a Ni concentrate."

Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 964 kt (1.1 millon st) with an estimated value of $45.3 million. That was a 10- percent decrease in tonnage from 1.07 Mt (1.2 mil-lion st) with a value of $49.2 million that was produced in 2007. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 73 percent of production was airfloat, 16 percent was crude and 11 percent was water-slurried.

Whether the microscopic bubbles generated by the high energy dissipation and high feed-slurry velocities in new flotation cells are stable in solution and what roles they play in particle collection are of great interest for the flotation of fines. Experimental work has shown that, with fast flow of liquid through an orifice, stable microscopic bubbles can form in flotation systems by hydrodynamic cavitation in the absence of gas supersaturation. The minimum flow rate at which bubble formation is initiated varies from 8 to 15 m/s, depending on the design of the cavitation tube, which is within the range of feed slurry velocities of some newly developed cells. Feed aeration enhances the formation of micro-bubbles by hydrodynamic cavitation. The study suggests that the fast flotation kinetics of some new cells may be attributed in some degree to the formation of microscopic bubbles

In spite of the many contributions that have been made to our knowledge of the creep properties of polycrystalline lead, the precise influence of various factors on these properties is not yet fully understood. Indeed, the position is such that several important points in connection with the creep of lead are a matter of controversy. This has been brought about largely by the fact that, in the case of lead, the changes that are produced in the creep behaviour by slight variations of such factors as the purity, grain sizeand previous treatment are out of all proportion to the magnitude of these variations.In order to study the fundamental properties of lead as related to creep, and so gain a more enlightened perspective with which to consider the creep of lead in general, the work that is described in a series of papers, of which the present paper is the third part, has been carried out. It deals with lead in the form of single crystals.It has been shown (1) - (3) that the grain boundaries as well as the actual grains play a part in the creep of polycrystalline lead. The present work, by eliminating grain boundaries, enables the. contribution of the grains themselves to the process of creep, in other words, crystalline creep, to be studied effectively.This object was, possibly, the major one in this work.

The use of gas-water dispersion of a molten material flow onto a vibrating surface is developed as a process to minimize water pumping requirements, minimize the risks of explosions, and minimize the post solidification dewatering and fines handling equipment requirements. The process uses existing vibration transport technologies and common plant utilities. Plant trials using the smaller footprint and the progressive molten particle cooling time have yielded encouraging results. The results are analyzed and reported.

There are several long-standing rules of thumb that are often quoted in mine ventilation studies. They include airway ‘carrying velocities’ and the critical upcast air velocity range that must be avoided to prevent a water blanket forming. Quoting these rules of thumb may lend an air of legitimacy to a ventilation design, and allow the design engineer to avoid having to study a problem from first principles. But how valid are these shortcuts in today’s rapidly changing world? This paper summarises research into the genesis of several commonly quoted rules of thumb. It finds that they were very specific to the local conditions, practices and economics at the time they were developed. It also presents examples where applying these rules of thumb outside of their original context can lead to unexpected and erroneous results.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2017. The development of the modern State and the growth of capitalism involves a complex process of interaction between cross-cutting structural dimension: first between politics and economics and, second, between market and hierarchy. Central to such developments are political economies of scale. Mineral specialization in the Third World developed within the framework of an international extension on oligopolistic structure of the advanced capitalist economies of Western Europe and North America. Up to the late 1960s, the world mineral and metallurgical industry was closely controlled by a handful of Western mining and industrial groups. To the extent that, foreign control of the mining sector was seen in the Third World producing countries both as the essence of foreign domination and as its major symbol. In some newly industrializing countries, the State took a more direct role in tying the economy and society together. Central to this process was the growth of large-scale finance capital. From early 1959to the mid-1970s, metal consumption in industrial countries expanded well beyond their domestic mineral endowments. And a free access to Third World minerals was a major element of the economic dynamism of these countries throughout that period. With the change in the characteristics of international investment, Africa has become less important as an outlet for capital exports of European countries. Actually, the African continent now receives only a very minor share of direct foreign investments of Western enterprises. International political economy is concerned first of all with the relationship between the economic and political domains across territorial boundaries. Second, attention should be drawn to the role of the State as the focus of decision-making in a system of competitive States, that is in turn, interdependent with a trans-national market economy in which mining and metallurgy are essential activities that affect the politics of the State, and how this in turn, rebounds on the politics of the international system. Understanding the role of the State must go beyond the glib pronouncements on the ?national interest?. How, and whose interest, the ?national interest? is determined, is precisely the problem. This implies a third theoretical problem that must be addressed: the linkage between the domestic and international domains (or levels of analysis), given that political-economic processes clearly cut across the lines of political decision-making constituted by the institutional structures of the State. Situating the State and economic interests within this vast ?state-society? complex that we call the global order will be a crucial problem for any theoretical approach that involves mining and metallurgy.

The Dirtlow Rake vein deposit, which is up to 12 m thick, contains a range of paragenetically linked replacement mineralisation styles typical of many Mississippi Valley-type deposit environments. The main ore zone lies within the solution collapse breccia domes, the more southerly of which has recently been well exposed, allowing its relationship to the associated mineral-hosting structures to be studied. The domes were largely formed during early silicification, propagated by dissolution collapse and infilled by subsequent fluorite-barite mineralisation. The location of pipes and pervasive replacement was also controlled by early silicification. Structurally controlled bow tie shears were formed as a result of fluid access at fracture-bedding plane intersections. The nature and distribution of the mineralisation styles indicate that the degree of fluid access, residence time of solutions in contact with the wallrock and susceptibility of the limestone to silicification each played a major role in dictating mineralisation

Neste trabalho, foi investigada a influência da textura de fitas de NiTi superelástico no início do processo de cristalização de um revestimento de TiO2 flexível. Foram utilizadas a calorimetria diferencial, cartografia Raman e difração de raios X para o estudo. Foi mostrado que existe uma influência significativa da textura do substrato no crescimento de grãos de anatase e rutila no filme de TiO2. Amostras com menor rugosidade apresentaram grãos mais desenvolvidos para todas as temperaturas de cristalização. Mostrou-se também que o substrato de NiTi promoveu a formação de TiO2 rutila em temperaturas abaixo daquelas observadas para a cristalização de pós.

The correlations between the modulus ratio and penetration rate of rotary and percussive drills were statistically investigated using the raw data obtained from the experimental works of different researchers. An inverse power law was found between the modulus ratio and the penetration rate of rotary and diamond drills. The penetration rate of rotary drills and diamond drills decrease with an increasing modulus ratio. The penetration rates of percussive drills increase with an increasing modulus ratio. There are significant linear correlations between the penetration rates of percussive drills and the modulus ratio. In one of the cases of percussive drilling, a strong correlation between the penetration rate and the modulus ratio was found for the rocks having a porosity value lower 1.23 %. It can be concluded that the modulus ratio might be a representative measure of rock drilling efficiency. However, further study is necessary to check the validity of the derived equations for other rock types. The effect of porosity on the correlations between the modulus ratio and penetration rate needs to be further investigated.

This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to develop information on the extractive metallurgy of thorite ores because potential ore bodies of this mineral have been found recently in Colorado, Idaho, and Montana. Basic information on thorite ore treatment that would be useful in appraising the potential of these and other domestic thorium resources was developed. The work was done mainly on thorite ore containing 3.87 percent ThO2 from the Powderhorn district, Colo., and on a composite sample containing 0.52 percent ThO2 from the Wet Mountains district, Colo. Limited tests of d corroborative nature subsequently were made on a sample containing 2.30 percent ThO2 from the Lemhi Pass area on the Idaho-Montana border.

Pile compression load capacity prediction methods are divided into four categories for purposes of discussing their reliability compared to static load test results. The categories considered are: 1) static analysis, 2) driving formulas, 3) wave equation analysis, and 4) dynamic measurement and analysis. It is concluded that any method of static analysis that works for the geological deposit in question may be satisfactory. However, any given method can be quite wrong when applied to other deposits of soil that are different in terms of their engineering and geological characteristics. Dynamic formulas are found to be theoretically unjustifiable. The ready availability of the wave equation analysis for microcomputers eliminates the need to utilize dynamic formulas. The wave equation analysis is found to be the best analytical method for making predictions both for design and for construction control. Dynamic methods of measurement and analysis are found useful, but have limitations that have caused troubles on many projects. Two case histories are presented that show the limitations of dynamic measurement and analysis, and of the wave equation analysis. Soil deposits exist that defeat both the wave equation and dynamic measurement techniques; static load tests are currently the only method of proving the load capacity of piles in such soils.

The feasibility study of Escondida Norte (ENorte), recommended a slope angle design for the Final Pit. But, according to the experience obtained with the slope adjacent to the West wall of ENorte, in which Compañia Minera Zaldívar (CMZ) gained in its phase 4, a slope of similar geotechnical characteristics will be exposed in the West Wall of Phase 1 (Premine) and of the Final Pit, with an interramp angle 53º and with very good stability results. In this regard, Minera Escondida Ltd. (MEL) performed a study of the slope angles for the phases mentioned and according to this delivered the results of this evaluation, the recommendations and/or the necessary conclusions in the design to ensure that the slopes are stable enough and may enable safe operational management of them.

The regional structure of shear and deformation zones in the belt, which is recognisable in plan view on Landsat TM images, is interpreted in terms of a conjugate-shear model. Gold mineralisation is related to this framework at a variety of scales. The principal recurrent structural geometries hosting deposits at mines such as Motapa, Durban, Charliesona, Cecil, Sunace, Turk group, Queens district, How, Peter Pat, Matabele Sheba, Goodenough, Old Nic and Bushtick are associated with shear zones and folds and include conjugate systems (shears, shear intersections, kink sets), side-step systems (en echelon segmentation, duplexes, monoclinal inflections, antiform-synform couplets) and interactions of the two. Linear sections of shear zones are generally poorly mineralised. The same geometries are identifiable on all scales from local to regional, so sections of regional structural lineaments or areas within mines should be prioritised for further investigation or development on the basis of the gold-bearing geometries observed to be dominant locally

The compilation of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation aerial gamma-ray data to produce maps of the apparent surface concentrations of potassium, uranium and thorium for the conterminous USA has resulted in a reasonably accurate representation of the distribution of these elements in the surface rocks and soils. "Abstract - Enigmatic hydrothermal vein/breccia/replacement Cu-Au deposits with magnetite and/or hematite are well-represented in Australian 1850 Ma to 1500 Ma terrains and associated with different-aged synorogenic intrusions in the Tennant Creek Block (ca. 1850 Ma); the Gawler-Curnamona region (1640 Ma to 1590 Ma); and the Cloncurry district (Mount Isa Eastern Fold Belt, 1540 Ma to 1500 Ma with a possible earlier event at ca. 1600 Ma). No deposits are known to be coeval with various 1780 Ma to 1610 Ma anorogenic intrusions. Deposits are hosted by many different rock-types with varying metamorphic grade including granites and various supracrustal rocks. Depth of mineralization varied from many kilometers in semiductile crust (e.g., Cloncurry deposits) to very shallow (e.g., Olympic Dam). Ore deposition near Cloncurry occurred in brittle-ductile shear zones from geochemically variable and complex, CO2-rich, 300°C to 500°C, high salinity fluids with magmatic stable isotopic signatures. Recently published studies of a giant granitoid-hosted magnetite vein complex at the Lightning Creek prospect (>1000 Mt magnetite) suggest it is a product of internal differentiation and endogenous Fe and Cu-rich hydrous-carbonic fluid phase generation within a quartz monzodiorite-monzogranite intrusion. Coupled with other field relationships, this points to a possible genetic relationship with intermediate (55 to 65 wt% SiO2) members of an alkaline and partly shoshonitic granitoid supersuite which appears to have both mantle and crustal source components from ?Nd evidence. In constrast, main-phase mineralization at Olympic Dam in the Gawler Craton is distinguished by hematite-phyllosilicate alteration and chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite zoning, reflecting fluid mixing in a high level (<250°C) system with a probable large component of meteoric water. Early high-temperature parageneses and fluid inclusions imply that the extensive hematitic breccias overprinted an older magnetite system which may have had similarities with those at Lightning Creek and Ernest Henry in the Cloncurry district.Deposits of this family are inherently difficult to find and evaluate as even within a single district, there is no reliable relationship between the location of ore and any specific combination of geophysical characteristics. Diverse alteration assemblages, geochemistry and physical characteristics suggest the deposits reflect the interaction of multi-sourced fluids with different host rocks in a wide range of geological environments. Recent discoveries and research in the Cloncurry district have extended the range of deposit models available and aid the development of a rudimentary classification in which economic and exploration characteristics can be linked to variations in the mechanisms and environments of ore formation."

"INTRODUCTIONInternational Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited operates two potash mine/refinery complexes near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. Annual production of approximately 4.2 million tons is sold in the United States and overseas in five grades according to size and quality.Ore grading 25% K2 0 equivalent is mined from a horizontal bed by continuous boring machines, crushed, and hoisted at 8 inches. The refinery operation consists of the eight basic steps shown in Figure 1. Particle sizes handled are similar to those experienced in other forms of mineral beneficiation: 8 inches to 100 mesh. The ore is crystalline and particles are angular. Fortunately the major mineral constituents, sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), demonstrate relatively low hardness at 2 to 2.5.Therefore, while simple abrasion must be acknowledged, it is not a major problem except, of course, in circuits carrying magnetite.Corrosion, as represented by the classic equations of Figure 2, occurs in all its various forms."

Bowie Resources maintains one of the most pro-active ground control programs in the U.S. mining industry today. Its guiding philosophy is that everyone in the organization, from the miners at the face all the way through the top management, are involved in ground control. Some of the unique elements of the Bowie ground control program include: ? Roof bolt operators log the stratigraphy of test holes in nearly every cut. These ?lithgraphs? are used by section foremen to determine the need for additional roof support, and they are entered into the geologic data base for use in geologic modeling and mapping. ? Underground core drilling is conducted to obtain data for CMRR and stability maps. ? Weekly ?Quality? meetings, involving mine management and technical staff, are held to ensure that ground control information is integrated into production operations. The paper will describe the program in detail, discussing the involvement of roof bolters, section foremen, surveyors, technical staff, and production managers. It will also show how the program has contributed to the mine planning process. Case histories of successful ground control interventions will be discussed.
