The Federal Bureau of Mines, under a contract with Ultrasystems, Inc., investigated the thermal oxidative degradation characteristics of conveyor belts used in underground mines. This included the determination of smoke evolution, glow characteristics, char yields, and the identification and quantification of all volatile decomposition products in the form of gram of specific product formed per gram of belt sample tested. In addition to these investigations, degradation studies were conducted on some pure ingredients used in conveyor-belt formulations. Three basic classes of belts were investigated: neoprene, polyvinyl chloride, and styrene-butadiene rubber compositions. The studies indicate that styrene-butadiene-based belts exhibit good flame resistance and are the least hazardous in regard to overall formation of toxic decomposition products. Under this program, thermogravimetric analysis was definitely established as a method of material differentiation.

In the United States, respirable coal mine dust exposures are limited to a 2 mg/m3 time weighted average for a working shift. If the silica content of the sample exceeds 5 percent, the 2 mg/m3 standard is reduced according to 10- (% silica) to limit silica dust exposures to 100 µg/m3. Examinations of dust sampling data collected by the federal coal mine inspectorate showed that roof bolter occupations continue to be at risk for overexposure to respirable silica dust. Testing at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health assessed the effectiveness of a canopy air curtain for controlling occupational exposures to respirable silica and coal dusts. Initial testing found that zones of higher velocity airflow shrank as distance beneath the canopy increased. This suggested that protection from occupational dust exposures would likely decrease as distance beneath the canopy increased. Further testing revealed that coal dust reduction efficiencies were most affected by changes in interference air velocity and, to a lesser extent, changes in canopy air quantity. However, respirable silica dust percentages under the canopy were not affected by such changes and, in fact, were not significantly different from silica percentages measured outside the canopy. This implied that the air curtain was equally effective on both respirable coal and respirable silica dust particles.

The results presented in this report deal with the elimination of explosion hazards of ether-oxygen mixtures by the addition of helium. The method is based upon the fact that every combustible gas, vapor, or dust will not burn or explode when the oxygen content of the mixture is reduced below certain definite values. These critical oxygen values are usually different for each combustible, varying with the percentage of the combustible present in the mixture and also with the inert gaseous material used to reduce the oxygen content of the mixture.

"This investigation consists of a numerical and physical modelling exercise on flow patterns, mixing, solid-liquid mass transfer, and slag-matte phase distribution in a 0.2-scale cold model of an industrial Peirce-Smith converter (PSC). Water, kerosene, air, and sintered benzoic acid compacts were used to simulate matte, slag, injected gas, and solid additions into the PSC. The 2D and 3D numerical simulations were carried out using volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k-e (RKE) turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow respectively. These models were implemented using the commercial computational fluid dynamics numerical code FLUENT.Numerical and physical simulations were able to predict, in agreement, the mixing and dispersion characteristics of the system in relation to various blowing conditions. Measurement of mass transfer indicated that fluid flow in the PSC is stratified. Blowing configurations and slag volume both had significant effects on mixing propagation, wave formation, and splashing.As a potential process alternative to increase conversion efficiency, we propose a combined blowing configuration using top lance and lateral nozzles. The numerical simulations were conducted on combined as well as lateral blowing conditions, and the results of the combined concept are encouraging."

Complete details are given of the drilling method by which two shafts were sunk at the new Beatm'x mine of Staatsmijnen in the Netherlands. The nature of the rock strata in the Dutch mining district determined choice of the drilling rather than the freezing method. Data for each step and details of the equipment used are given in the illustrations. Staatsmijnen was founded in 1902 with government financial backing, but it is run as a private enterprise, on a commercial basis, with the normal fiscal obligations. The company now has four mines in operation with annual outputs amounting to 7 1/2 million tons of coal. In 1952 it was determined that a new mine—the Beatrix—would be opened. Details of the shaft-sinking operation are described in this paper. SHAFT LOCATION The coal-bearing carboniferous rock in the Dutch mining district is overlain almost completely by soft water-bearing strata, which at the site of the new shafts are about 1600 ft thick. The sinking of the new shafts through this soft water-bearing overburden (Fig. 1) is a costly and time-consuming affair. From the two availaible sinking methods: 1) Poetsch's well known freezing method or 2) the drilling method of Honigmann-de Vooys, the latter was preferred, not only because of its relative cheapness, under the prevailing conditions, but primarily because by using the drilling process, a special type of shaft lining of steel, concrete, and bitumen could be used. The new shafts, located 330 ft apart, have an inner diameter of 18 ft, 4 1/2 in. The boreholes, which have a diameter of 25 ft and which were drilled through nearly 1600 ft of overburden and some 100 ft of carboniferous, each contain more than 29,000 cu yd—by far the largest in the world. DRILLING METHOD The drilling method is based on the use of mud-flush—a thin mixture of clay and water—to keep the borehole filled during the entire drilling period and during insertion of the lining (Fig. 2). Keywords: drying, steam drying, concentrates, copper, lead During the past twenty years steam drying has become a prominent technology for drying of non-ferrous metals concentrate. This is mainly because of its low energy consumption and very low emissions. The first applications of significant capacity were stationary steam dryers, which however, faced severe challenges in maintenance costs and availability. That technology was soon replaced by Kumera?s rotary steam drying technology, which has been the dominant technology in new dryer installations world-wide for the past ten years, ever since the first installation in Hamburg in 1999. There are ten Kumera steam dryers in operation today and five more to be commissioned during 2011. Practically every dryer is different owing to continuous development, new innovations and operational experience with continuous feedback from the operators. Most significant improvements relate to capacity increase with the Kumera steam-dryer family, new feeder systems at the wet end, a completely new design of the dry material discharge with increased availability, heating element design and material selection, and control systems. This paper discusses the modifications and improvements introduced which have enabled the Kumera steam dryer to become the global leader in new dryer installations.

Surveys to establish the quantity and quality of coals available for metallurgical, industrial, and energy use, investigations to develop better mining methods, and studies aimed at improving the health and safety of those who mine the coal highlighted Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal in 1968. Also being developed are more efficient methods of coal preparation, transportation, storage, and utilization. Supplementing this effort are projects designed to assure minimum disturbance of land, water, and air resources. Research centers and laboratories of the Bureau of Mines are listed in appendix A. Publications released during 1968 are cited with the various projects and in appendix C. Organizations that cooperated in the work in various ways are cited in appendix B.

The softwall mining system is a novel, new method of mining mineral deposits in soft, shallow, nonrock ground conditions. This method can mine the ore layer without substantially disturbing the existing overburden. The softwall mining system consists of machinery that is hydraulically controlled and powered, that can be buried (or used on the surface) to extract the ore or mineral from a layered deposit. The method is essentially an application of the longwall mining concept, modified for loose overburden and ore conditions, combined with hydraulic mining.

Choosing the correct delay time for many blasting applications is an important and critical blast design parameter for controlling fragmentation, muckpile shape, swell, digability, throw, ground vibration and airblast. BAl and its affiliates have monitored thousands of full scale blasts in a variety of field conditions, spanning over 15 countries, with sophisticated blast monitoring instrumentation. In some blast environments, a small change in the choice of delay times used had a dramatic and pronounced effect on the overall blast results. In other blast environments, large changes in the choice of delays used had absolutely no effect on the final results in terms of specific outputs. In environments which were sensitive to the delay selection, the type of explosive, dynamic response time of the rock mass (TMIN), integrity of the material, burden and rock mass geometry, all played a very important ,role.

The Smelting and Converting El Teniente Process for copper concentrates as well as Slag Cleaning Furnace Technologies to treat slags coming out from the El Teniente Furnaces are widely applied today in Chile and around the world. Several industrial applications of this process have shown their capability to treat copper concentrates in a wide range of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Main operational parameters determining performance of the process are: oxygen enriched air flow rate, degree of oxygen enrichment, moisture content of the solid materials processed, molten material levels inside the vessel, frequency of molten materials tapping, bath temperature and copper losses in slags. In this work, the copper losses in the slags from El Teniente pyrometallurgical process are predicted by calculation from thermodynamic data and compared with those determined by microscopic examination and slag industrial data. Results obtained show that the main part of copper losses in the slag from El Teniente Furnace are mechanically entrapped or floated unsettled droplets of the coexisting matte phase. by the contrary the very low copper losses in the slag from slag cleaning furnace are limited by the physico-chemical form.

Most citizens take it for granted, but minerals produced in the mines of the western United States, including Colorado, are crucial to nation’s standard of living and quality of life, said Colorado’s Gov. Bill Owens in his welcoming remarks at the 106th National Western Mining Conference. The conference, which was organized by the Colorado Mining Association (CMA), was held Feb. 4-6, 2004, in Denver. Attendance was425, up substantially from last year’s meeting. The meeting included the CMA annual membership meeting as well as the CMA chairman’s and president’s reports. The meeting also included awards presentations in which companies were recognized for their efforts in pollution prevention, health and safety, and reclamation. The conference also included a tradeshow.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. INTRODUCTION The method of heat removal during a casting process strongly influences the crystal morphology of the cast product and hence the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the solidified materials. In this paper, the Ohno Continuous Casting Process (OCC) is described in terms of the casting conditions and the type of structure observed in the cast product. Significant improvements are observed in workability, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance of castings produced by the OCC method, Ohno (1988). Applications of this technique to low melting point nonferrous metals and alloys are discussed. The feasibility of the application of this technology to high melting point materials is outlined. THE OCC PROCESS The OCC process involves delivering liquid metal into a heated mold, the temperature of which is held just above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast. This is the key point which differentiates the OCC process from the conventional continuous casting method. A schematic illustration of the OCC process is shown in Figure 1. The Formation of a Single Crystal When the mold is heated above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast, nucleation on the mold surface is prevented and solidification takes place only at the mold exit. The heat is extracted through the product being cast by a cooling device located near the mold outlet. Crystals are formed only at the tip of the dummy bar at the start of casting, and as the dummy bar travels away with a progressively increasing speed from the mold, the position of the solid liquid interface will align with the mold exit, producing a unidirectionally

Any discussion of outside support to Latin American mineral industries must concede at once the pre-eminent role of U. S. industry and business. American capital has developed the great copper resources of Chile and Peru, the lead-zinc of Peru and Mexico, the bauxite of Surinam and Jamaica, the petroleum and iron ore of Venezuela. American consumers have provided the market for their products. U. S. companies operating south of the border have trained Latin American geologists, engineers, chemists, and skilled labor—including metal, mineral, and fuel technicians—to new and greater competence. The industrial demands of World War II drastically altered world economics and concepts of U. S. foreign mineral requirements. In this country discovery of vital mineral resources fell far behind the alarming depletion rates, and there was new appreciation of the actual and potential importance of the world's less extensively explored areas. During the war and afterward, the task of supplying the nation's mineral requirements became greater than private industry could carry alone, and the Government assumed a position of continuing support. In Latin America, as elsewhere, this support applies in three categories: banking, procurement, and technical assistance. The first two are now generally accepted as necessary Government functions; the third has often been misunderstood and misinterpreted, although it has given rise to legitimate controversy. There have been major accomplishments in all three categories, as well as some errors of judgment. Since the beginning of World War 11, U. S. Government financing, procurement, and technical assistance have been applied on a large scale to a wide range of commodities and services throughout the free world. The present discussion—under the separate headings mentioned—will concern only the support related to a single industrial group in a single geographic area. During the War Federal banking was conducted on an emergency scale by temporary agencies created to meet the abnormal circumstances. Unfortunately, there are no readily available data on these activities that would permit evaluating loans and credits extended for mineral projects in Latin America. The only agency operating in this field since World War II is the Export-Import Bank, under its own authority and to some extent from credits authorized by the Office of Defense Mobilization. The Bank can offer more capital—on more favorable terms—than is available from most Latin American banks, and its staff of engineers evidently can appraise loan applications more favorably than commercial banks in this country are willing to do. The risks seem to be justified, as defaults have been well under 1 pct of total loans. From V-J day 1945 to the end of 1957, mineral loans to Latin America have been authorized for projects totaling $541.63 million in eight countries. In order of magnitude of credits, they have been made to Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Bolivia. In order of magnitude by industries. they are for development and expansion of steel mills, copper, manganese, nitrate plants, iron ore, zinc plants, sulfur plants, cement plants, tungsten, coal, and lead. Loan Distribution: By far the largest loans have been $307.9 million for iron and steel projects in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, and Peru: $100.4 for developing the great low-grade copper deposits of southern Peru; and $55.3 million for developing manganese deposits in the Territory of Amapa, Brazil. Others range from $20.8 million for a zinc smelter in central Peru to $19 thousand for iron-mine trucking equipment in Chile. It has been noted that 59 pct of the loans have been to foreign companies, 14 pct to companies of mixed foreign and American capital, and 27 pct to American mining companies. Pin Piles are small diameter, bored, cast-in-place piles used to underpin structures. They were first employed over 40 years ago in Italy, and have been used in the U.S. since the late 1970's. However, it is only in the last few years that their full potential in terms of load holding capacity has been exploited: whereas 100 kip working loads typified former practice, ultimate loads approaching 700 kips have recently been recorded for Pin Piles founded in sand. In order to better understand the actual performance of these piles, fundamental research has been conducted by a consortium of industry and academia. This paper describes the advances made in the laboratory and full scale field testing programs. In particular, the extensive field tests have been conducted in a variety of materials in which different pile configurations have been cyclically tested to failure. By using this test method, the elastic performance of the piles has been examined and so the progressive interfacial debonding phenomenon has been studied. This has led to the development of the Elastic Ratio concept which is proving extremely useful in analyzing and predicting Pin Pile performance. Data are provided from the full scale Test Pile Programs conducted at Mobile, AL and Port Vancouver, WA. Given that Pin Piles are usually installed in areas of low headroom or restricted access, and through difficult, occasionally contaminated soils, the paper also describes key aspects of construction.

The dissolution of alumina and magnesia has been investigated using laser scanning confocal microscopy (alumina) and a rotating finger apparatus (magnesia) to assess the effects of temperature, composition and forced convection on the rate of dissolution in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3based slags. The two techniques have differing strengths and limitations, and provide complementary methods for studying dissolution. Alumina dissolution was studied for temperatures from 1477 to 1577°C. Based upon the data, the rate controlling mechanism was thought to be mass transfer control in the slag. The diffusion coefficients for the alumina particles are estimated to be in the range 10-11to 10-10m2.s. MgO degradation for sample rotation speeds of 50 to 800 rpm at 1500 and 1530°C was studied for both congruent and incongruent dissolution. The results show that the rate of dissolution for this is primarily controlled by a diffusion mass transfer mechanism for congruent dissolution except at the highest rotation speed. For incongruent dissolution, the mechanism is much more complex, with the morphology and distribution of the spinel reaction product having a significant effect. At high speeds and prolonged times, mechanical forces played a major role in the degradation process. During 1928 questionnaires covering the calendar year 1927 were sent to over 1700 quarries: producing stone for purposes other thaw cutting to dimension. These inclined producers of stone for limn burning; cement manufacture, rip rag, and crushed stone. The various rinds of stone represented were limestone, trap rock, sandstone, granite, and marble. Replies received from limestone producers prior to November, 1928, were compiled into tables and published in February, 1925, as a preliminary report (Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation 2911).

This Bureau of Mines publication consists of an overview of the mine waste management research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The following papers, given at a Technology Transfer Workshop, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety and environmental considerations of mine waste disposal In recent years. Current work related to legislation passed in the last 10 years and their subsequent standards includes the development of adequate monitoring systems, development of stability and seepage prediction and control techniques, control of runoff water, and control of leaching solutions. Selected topics are included here that cover coal mine waste disposal, embankment slope stability monitoring, flow failures of mine tailings impoundments, and controlled burnout of abandoned coal mine fires. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.
