Unplanned stope panel collapses occur on most near-surface and shallow mines in South Africa. Although these incidents often occur during blasting, they pose a major threat to the safety of underground workers and the economic extraction of orebodies. Most stope panel collapses occur due to excessive panel lengths (resulting in excessive stope spans) that are not designed according to a systematic design procedure or methodology. Instead, panel lengths are often dictated by the equipment in use and by previous experience under similar conditions. Hence, a rock engineering design methodology for the design of stable stope panels between pillars is of vital importance for optimum safety and production in shallow mining operations. Using the proposed design methodology described in this paper, rock mechanics practitioners and mine planners should be able to identify and quantify the critical factors influencing the stability of stope panels. The critical factors should then be used as input to the design of stable stope panels that will provide the necessary safe environment for underground personnel working in stopes. The proposed design methodology is an iterative process, which includes aspects such as rock mass characterization, estimation of rock mass properties, identification of potential failure modes, consideration of appropriate stability analyses and other elements of the rock engineering design process. This process continues after implementation. During monitoring, new data should be included in the database and the design process repeated on a regular basis. Design approaches included in the proposed design methodology include empirical methods such as different rock mass classification methods, analytical methods such as elastic and Voussoir beam analyses, kinematic analyses, probabilistic analyses, and numerical analyses. "Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in mid-2008, capital has been more difficult to access. Mining projects must contend with projects from other industries for scarce capital. A decision to invest available capital in mineral projects requires that valuation be conducted to assess the expected return on the projects. The discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is generally applied for the valuation of mining projects, whereby future cash flows are discounted to present value using an appropriate discount rate. The discount rate significantly affects the outcome of a valuation. Economic and finance theory provides tools to calculate discount rates. The discount rate must account for factors such as the risk and stage of development of the mineral project; hence the appropriate discount rate to utilize in a project is often a subject of debate.The discount rate is the weighted sum of the cost of debt and equity. There are several methods for determining the cost of equity. This study considers the commonly applied Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model because of their simplicity and availability of parameters required to estimate the cost of equity. This study explores how differences in the cost of equity obtained by these two methods can be explained for a mining environment. Data for empirical analysis were collected from the I-Net Bridge, McGregor BFA, and Bloomberg databases. It was found that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model provides better estimates of the cost of equity compared to the CAPM under depressed market conditions. Therefore, this research recommends that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model be used to estimate the discount rates for mining projects during periods of depressed market conditions."

The effects of compositions and firing temperatures on the physico-mechanical properties of blended Nsu fireclay and Nkalaha redbrick clay have been investigated. The clay samples were compounded according to the following ratios: 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60 50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10 in the order Nsu: Nkalaha respectively, and test samples made and fired at 9000C, 10000C 11000C and 12000C. The properties tested for were the modulus of rupture, porosity, shrinkage, apparent density, water absorption and bulk density. From the results obtained, it is inferred that the blends have a maximum service temperature of 11000C, with the 30: 70 blend presenting the best characteristics. A conclusion is drawn to the effect that the blend could be adapted for the production of ceramic earthenware, electrical porcelain pin insulators, cement manufacture and for refractory linings where temperature requirements are less severe.

The Green River Valley in Kent, Washington, is a fast growing area containing retail facilities, warehouse factories and industrial businesses, including the Boeing Space Center. Traffic from Interstate - 5 to the West Valley Highway is highly congested. Accordingly, a new corridor, including a bridge across the Green River, was designed and constructed between 1996 and 1997. This paper presents a case history of the design elements and issues associated with the construction of the pier foundations of the bridge. Subsurface conditions were evaluated using both deep test borings and CPT soundings to evaluate the strength and consolidation properties of the supporting soils. Subsurface conditions consisted of alternating layers of loose and medium dense silty sand and sandy silt. Engineering analysis included an assessment of liquefaction as well as pier supporting capacity and associated settlement. The constructed foundations included 6-foot-diameter piers cased to a depth of 120 feet below the ground surface. The pier casings were driven to the design tip elevation and the soil inside the casing was removed by drilling. Despite performing borings and CPT soundings at specific pier locations, occasional trees, buried thousands of years ago through geologic processes, were surprisingly encountered during pier construction. This presented unique and difficult driving and drilling conditions. During drilling, the water level inside the piers was maintained near the ground surface to create a balance of hydrostatic pressure and prevent boiling of soils the bottom of the casing. After the casings were installed, the soil inside the casing was excavated, the rebar cage was installed and the pier was filled with concrete using treme techniques. Construction of the piers is complete and the completed piers have experienced negligible settlement. Since World War II, the need for the use of explosives with testing, construction, demolition, mining and quarrying near urban areas has increased dramatically. Once remote, testing areas have been encroached upon by commercial and residential areas. Evidence has been found that overpressure levels near these areas can be estimated using meteorological conditions. This paper reviews a study where 205 test shots were fired, meteorological conditions recorded, and over-pressure levels estimated using multiple regression techniques.

Economics is a social science dealing with the allocation of scarce resources. In modern times the “science” was identified by Adam Smith in his book, The Wealth of Nations, written in 1776. Mr.Smith, highly influenced by the Mercantilists of the 17th and 18th centuries, identified the “Invisible Hand” which would lead every individual to pursue selfish rewards in purchasing goods. He speculated these selfish motives would result in the best good for all. Price would be determined by barter, at a point where self-centered customers and vendors were mutually satisfied. Today, Smith’s theory is known throughout the world as “Capitalism” but most often termed “Free Enterprise” in the United States.

During 1983, Ecuador's gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by a reported 3.3% in real terms, the second consecutive decline in the economy after more than a decade of growth generated mainly by petroleum export revenues. The slowdown was due, in part, to the effects of the world recession, lower foreign demand for oil, depressed world oil prices, and reduced demand and prices for Ecuador's traditional agricultural exports. Inflation accelerated to an estimated 55% annual rate. The sucre was devalued in March, for the second time in less than a 12-month period, by 27% after remaining unchanged during the previous decade. In addition, continuous adjustments were made every weekday, effectively devaluing the sucre another 30% by yearend. Ecuador's production of crude petroleum increased almost 12% in 1983 compared with that of 1982. Average daily production was 237,100 barrels per day (bbl/d), up from 211,300 bbl/d in 1982.

Significant progress has been made in the past decade in determining the load bearing capacity of pile foundations. Developments in the means of prediction of pile capacity as limited by soil strength have been substantial, particularly in the use of dynamic methods. The use of currently available equipment, analytical procedures, and practices in the field, will often produce material economies on a job by allowing increased loads with proven factors of safety. This approach justifies the minimum number of piles required for a safe foundation in a wide range of job sizes and soil conditions. To avoid exposing the reader to excessive detail in the body of this paper, technical topics have been covered more thoroughly in several appendices. I. Wave Equation Analysis of Piles Appendix A II. Case Pile Wave Analysis Program Appendix D 1 Preliminary Analysis In designing driven pile foundations, there must be a close relationship between design, construction control procedures, driving practices, and the size of the job. Small commercial buildings or residences involving loads that are only a fraction of the pile capacities do not justify the expense of detailed design processes or elaborate construction controls. Nevertheless, some preliminary analysis of the job requirements and a limited subsurface investigation must be made to understand existing conditions and the possible foundation solutions. In other words, it is necessary to determine that driven piling is the best overall choice of foundation.

In most coal preparation processes, water is a necessary medium, but the presence of water in coal after it has been cleaned has a negative impact on transportation costs, handling and specific energy values. The utilization of super absorbent polymers (SAP) in the nappy application is well known. The concept of utilizing these polymers was investigated for the purposes of dewatering coal and other fines, generated by preparation processes such as flotation. SAPs are granular highly cross-linked synthetic copolymers with excellent water-absorbing properties. The dewatering process is characterized by three main stages: (a) contact of super absorbent polymer with high-moisture fine coal; (b) separation of dewatered fine coal from super absorbent polymer; and (c) regeneration of used super absorbent polymer, by exploiting its response to changes in conditions such as pH or temperature. Preliminary tests showed the separation step to be very difficult. The novel idea of encasing a given amount of polymer in a water permeable cloth solved this problem (of separating the swollen polymer from the dewatered coal). Preliminary tests investigating the effectiveness of the sachets of polymer showed a drastic decrease in the moisture contents of slurries. Furthermore, it was shown that it was possible to regenerate the polymer (still within the sachets) through thermal drying. A full-scale experimental programme was then followed to accurately determine the feasibility of using sachets of SAP. The experimental variables were initial slurry moisture content and polymer dosage. It was observed that the sachets seemed to work fastest and most effectively at high moistures and also at higher dosages of SAP. Regeneration of the polymer was also investigated, using two methods: thermal regeneration and pH-induced regeneration. The experimental variables, for investigating the regeneration process, were method of regeneration and grade of water used. Thermal regeneration at 70°C seemed to work successfully. Although the cost of using thermal energy is still a problem, the safety aspect (fire hazards) has been addressed since the polymer does not ignite when heated, unlike fine coal particles that may do so. The alternative method of regeneration, which exploits the pH-sensitivity of the polymer, was less successful, and further work needs to be conducted.

"Ultrafine grinding of minerals has been in wide spread use in the industrial mineral field for over 30 years. Within the last 10 years the metalliferous industry has shown interest in the ability to produce ultrafine particles, as chemical, physio-chemical and physical separation processes have advanced to be able to treat ultrafine metalliferous particles. Also as the primary mineral deposits are depleted, new more difficult deposits must be mined. Existing operations are also looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies.The recent development of industrially proven and cost efficient technologies for ultrafine grinding has opened up another processing option for the treatment of finegrained metalliferous and refractory gold ores. The current commercial designs are variations of stirred mills used in the industrial minerals sector for the past 30 years. For the purposes of this paper ultrafine grinding is considered to be P80 of less than 15 microns.Attrition milling to fine grind sizes presents some challenging issues relating to scale-up including the dearth of information on the quantitative impact of feed and operating conditions, as well as the precise and accurate measurement of particle size distributions. Two examples from recent installations will be analyzed including Thalanga Copper and Century Zinc Mines. Both have diverse grind size targets for the SMD, yet both have realized significant metallurgical gains."

"IntroductionCemented backfill has been placed underground in slurry form in Inco Limited's Ontario Division mines since the early 196Os. The slurry was traditionally mixed on surface at between 65 and 70 wt% solids* and transported underground via gravity through a borehole-pipeline distribution system. This method of placement, while simple and dependable, has proven to be costly because of the large amounts of transport water involved.A significant quantity of the slimes buildup on mine levels is caused by the backfill water carrying cement and other fine material out of the stopes. The level cleanup and eventual pumping or hoisting of the slimes and water back to surface result in substantial indirect backfilling costs.The cement that remains in the stope is always overhydrated because of the high water cement ratios that exist. As a consequence, high concentrations of Portland cement must be added to the backfill to produce the fill strengths required for the different mining methods.Pouring backfill at these densities also demands extensive fill preparatory work in the stopes to withstand the hydraulic heads created by the slurried fill. This, along with the delays in pouring necessary to allow for water drainage, result in significant losses in productivity.These negative aspects of slurry placed fill has led Inco Limited to investigate several methods of transporting backfill underground via pipeline, at higher densities (i.e. 75 to 95 wt.% solids). Three separate transport methods are presently being experimented with by the Company's Mines Research Department. Each utilizes a different technique or form of flow transport, i.e. concrete pumping technology, high density slurry flow, and pneumatic conveying."

Sublevel caving is likely to remain the dominant system at both Malmberget and Kiruna for the foreseeable future. The sub-level interval has increased from 12 m in 1983 to 30 m, requiring more effective drifting and the development of a contour blasting technique to reduce requirements for rock reinforcement. Production drilling is mainly by hydraulic hammers or water-powered in-the-hole machines drilling 115 m diameter holes. Loading operations are undertaken 7 days/week with 15-25 tonne capacity electric shovels. Production has increased by nearly 70% since 1983 and productivity has risen threefold

NINE-TENTHS of the total anthracite deposits of North America are in Pennsylvania. Corrosion of pumping equipment by acid mine waters has been experienced at tremendous cost by mining companies in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, for many years in many ways. The design and specifications of the large centrifugal pumps as provided in the proposed mine-drainage system (7-35, 45, 46, 48, 54, 64, 70, 71)° make it imperative that a metal or alloy be recommended that has the highest corrosion resistance and, at the same time, acceptable properties suitable for general workability (welding and machining). This report presents data on the corrosive and erosive effects of acid mine waters in the anthracite region on metals and alloys for pumping equipment and drainage facilities necessary to remove or control this water.

An examination of 60 mines, 11 illumination hardware manufacturers, and Q mobile face-equipment manufacturers was conducted to determine the state of the art of mine-illumination hardware, define lighting system installation and maintenance problems, and assess personnel acceptance of lighting. Longwall and mobile face-machine illumination were studied. Major problems on room and pillar installations include damage of exposed components, electrical failures, and reduced lamp life, with extreme variability in the degree of these problems. Most longwall systems had low or moderate maintenance requirements, cable damage being the most significant problem. Most mobile face-equipment operators liked their machines' lighting systems, but many complained of glare and other problems. Longwall lighting was unanimously accepted by face personnel, and most complaints were minor. Based on the survey, general installation and maintenance guidelines have been established, addressing hardware design aspects, approaches proved effective to minimize problems, and improper practices noted which are detrimental to effective lighting.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a mineral resource assessment study of the Coromandel region, due for completion in July 2000. A key part of the study is the assembly of a geographic information system (GIS), a computerised tool for layering, analysing and presenting spatial information. The GIS is being assembled with ArcInfo/ArcView software and to date includes layers for a digital terrain model, an aeromagnetic map (open file mining company data), a geological map (from the QMAP project), areas of hydrothermal alteration, locations of mineral deposits (GERM database), stream sediment geochemical analyses (REGCHEM database), and a lineament map derived from satellite remote sensing data.

A moderately scaled apparatus was developed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the fire resistance characteristics of mine conveyor belts and similar type materials. The design of the apparatus was based upon data obtained in full-scale fire tests and features a radiant panel to preheat the belt and a methane-oxygen ribbon burner to ignite the sample under ventilating condi¬tions in a rectangular duct. The test method overcomes the limitations of existing laboratory-scale methods and provides a measure of both ignitability and flammability in quantitative terms. Flame propagation depended upon such variables as air velocity, ignitor heat flux, and belt width and height in the test chamber. Data are presented for nine belt materials and fire resistance ratings are proposed in terms of the flame spread rate, heat release rate, and the critical ignitor heat flux. The ratings discriminate between the fire hazard posed by different fire-resistant belts and tend to be in reasonable agreement with those obtained in full-scale fire tests.

"BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada, in Chile, is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 10,500 tph of copper ore through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. The performance of the rougher circuit at each concentrator was measured and analysed using the JKTech flotation optimisation methodology. This involved developing a flotation model for each concentrator based on cell operating parameters (for example bubble surface area flux and froth recovery) and feed ore floatability characteristics. The rougher circuit performance was evaluated in terms of traditional measures, such as grade and recovery. The operation was also analysed using the measured cell operating parameters and ore floatability and the effect of these with regard to performance (grade / recovery) was assessed.This paper presents a comparison of the rougher circuit at each concentrator in terms of these parameters. The main differences in rougher circuit performance between the two plants were attributed to differences in feed ore floatability characteristics and froth recovery. The comparison highlighted opportunities where performance improvements could be made. The study also showed the usefulness of separating the flotation process into easily measurable subprocesses to further identify the different mechanisms occurring in each rougher circuit. Traditional measures like grade and recovery are useful for monitoring flotation operation but this data lacks the depth to determine the root cause behind operational issues. Determining the operating parameters and ore floatability provides the operating plant metallurgist better tools to assess and manage these issues."

Regions with extensive reserves of brown coal but with inadequate deposits of hard coal provide a particularly suitable field for the application of brown coal petrology.In fact, this discipline is indispensable where brown coal is to form the basis for high-quality products of upgrading. Both chemical and physical analyses are required in addition to the techniques employed in coal petrology, but it is the macropetrographic and the microscopic investigations that are of decisive and specific importance.Foremost among the methods of upgrading brown coal is briquetting. From the raw materials aspect the biochemical rank of coal (i.e. the type of deposit) and the coal variety (i.e. the lithotype) exert a marked influence on briquette strength. These are also the significant factors in the suitability of a brown coal for high temperature carbonization; here the demands on coal quality are even more exacting if adequately sintered and therefore high-strength lump chars are to be obtained. The principle applies also to the char from low temperature carbonization. There are close relationships between the tar yield and the remission of the coal.The reflectivity measurement therefore provides a rapid method for evaluating the suitability of a brown coal for low temperature carbonization. Similar correlations have been established between the content of extraction bitumen (raw montan wax) and the remission. Petrological investigations show that the quality of the coal bitumen is a function of the type of deposit and of the lithotype.

"The Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, is investigating the preparation of pulverized coal for fuel. In this study the relative amount of surface in various products and samples had to be assessed. Because of the familiarity with screens and because of the simplicity of using the inverse ratio of the opening for ascertaining the amount of relative surface in the respective sizes, screens down to and including 270-mesh were used. This choice was made in full cognizance of the irregularity of screens, but it seemed that if the same screens were used throughout all the tests the relative values would be satisfactory.In dealing with the subsieve sizes, pneumatic elutriation was used to make several fractions to extend the sizing analysis into the range of hypothetical screens. This kind of a sizing analysis was thought necessary because it is familiar to all operators, and, furthermore, it is amenable to several ways of plotting curves that bring out the characteristics of various coals and various methods of grinding.The method of obtaining the data from which to set up the hypothetical screen scale is the subject of this paper. It consists in determining the average projected area of the particles in the respective elutriated products. By extending the ""area method"" to sieve sizes, a factor is found that may be applied to the subsieve sizes, and thus the scale is projected in a regular manner. This method avoids contentions about specific surface and steers clear of ""average diameter"" except as material sized on screens may be said to have an average diameter."
