Today, a typical blaster is likely to wear many hats, including, but not limited to, supervisor, risk manager, safety coordinator, explosives engineer, communicator, as well as professional decision maker. Simply put, a blaster in the new millennium is an all encompassing blast site manager. As you know, accidents on the blast site can range from blast crew injuries to blasting incidents resulting from vibration, flyrock, misfires, etc. Not surprising, the incidents can quite often be traced back to direct preventable human action on the blast site. They can, however, frequently be avoided, if responsibly identified early and managed properly by an efficient blast site manager. Your company cannot afford to simply employ blasters; good blast site managers are necessary to produce the safest results possible.

Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI) is one of the commonly used tests to evaluate rock abrasiveness for cutter life/cost estimations of TBM projects. There are at least 3 style machines, 2 different pin hardness, and the test could be run on fresh rock surface VS a sawn surface. Each of these parameters has a meaningful effect on the results, but its impacts were not fully understood nor its implications well explored. This paper reviews the current practice of Cerchar testing and its implications on geotechnical investigations related to TBM tunnels and provide a set of guidelines on testing and reporting of the test results for future projects.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM An extensive research programme to address the issue of rockburst control has been undertaken over a number of years. This paper discusses the development of preconditioning techniques to control face bursts, for safer mining in seismically hazardous areas. Preconditioning involves regularly setting off carefully tailored blasts in the fractured rock immediately ahead of a mining face, so as to encourage slip on pre-existing fractures, in order not to allow the accumulation of high strain energy density in the rock mass. Two different preconditioning techniques have been developed, namely face-perpendicular preconditioning and face-parallel preconditioning. Both have prevented face bursting in areas to which they have been applied, even though several large seismic events have occurred close to the faces in some areas. In addition, minimal overall damage was observed in the preconditioned panels following these events, compared to similarly exposed unpreconditioned panels. Preconditioning has also provided some protection to the face area from distant events, through the capacity of the preconditioned ground to absorb energy. An improvement in hangingwall stability and productivity has also been noted in preconditioned areas. In order to determine the optimum blast parameters for achieving the most effective preconditioning, an extensive optimization study was carried out for the face-perpendicular preconditioning technique. While optimum values for parameters such as hole length, diameter and spacing were determined, it was ultimately concluded that the differences in results obtained by varying the preconditioning parameters were less significant than the clear positive differences observed when comparing preconditioned areas with non-preconditioned areas.

The construction, commissioning and operation of a continuous pilot-scale selective agglomeration (oil agglomeration) unit are described. This plant has been used to recover fine coal from an effluent stream that is produced by a jig plant which scalps the coal from a New South Wales (Australia) colliery. The reject slurry is extremely fine (66.5% minus 53 um) and has an ash content of approximately 40%. The pilot plant can treat up to 0.3 tonne/h of this slurry, producing average product ashes as low as 9.1% and tailings ashes greater than 80%. The average yield observed was62%, which corresponded to a recovery of coal material of 88%. The operation of this pilot plant yielded data that enabled an economic assessment of this type of processing to be carried out. This study showed that selective agglomeration is an economically viable process for eliminating the substantial losses of coal to tailings ponds and minimizing consequent disposal and environmental problems. A commercial plant has been constructed and commissioned on the basis of the data obtained from this pilot-scale operation.

A piled raft refers to a shallow foundation that is structurally connected to the piles, while composite ground refers to a soil-pile matrix where the piles are not structurally connected. The design objectives for both a piled raft and composite ground are (excluding special considerations such as expansive soil): (1) to provide a sufficient ultimate resistance and (2) to distribute the load into the soil-pile matrix so that the settlement experienced by the shallow foundation is within tolerable limits. A simplified model is proposed for a shallow foundation on composite ground where the foundation settlement is estimated as the sum of the downward movement of the piles plus the downward movement of the shallow foundation relative to the pile head. The proposed simplified model is applied using conventional geotechnical analyses for two hypothetical examples of shallow foundations undergoing compression settlement.

During the last five years there have been significant improvements in face support monitoring techniques particularly in respect of face pressure. The measurement of support loading pressures was originally conceived as a maintenance aid for the hydraulic systems but recent work has also included geological loading displays of the complete face as well as individual supports. This paper briefly examines the means of obtaining this information, together with some examples of actual face data. Also included is a summary of the benefits of such monitoring and an outline of future development work.

Multiple-seam mining operations induce surface subsidence basins different from those caused by mining in a single coal seam, and also disturb the mining operations in the other coal seams. A computer program, CISPM-MS (Comprehensive and Integrated Subsidence Prediction Model for Multiple Seam Mining), has been developed to predict the final surface movements and deformations as well as the interactions associated with multi-seam coal mining operations. The program applies a newly developed subsurface subsidence prediction model that is able to consider the geological stratification variations. In predicting surface subsidence, the surface movements and deformations caused by the individual mining operations as well as the interactive effects are all considered. A case study is conducted in this paper for validating the program.

The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in REscent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D409-35T4/was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-Mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig. Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this typo of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

This paper reviews how uncertainty has been dealt with over the past 40 years using the decision making cycle as a frame of reference. The review of the phases of this cycle, as applied to rockmechanics and rock engineering, namely characterization, performance analysis, updating and decision making shows that in each, progress has been made over the past 40 years, although most of the basic concepts existed already in the 1960’s. Characterization is the area in which the greatest scientific steps were taken, this phase and performance analysis also gained from the tremendously expanded computational capabilities which allow one to use both more complex and more practically oriented models. The greatest practical advance is without using any doubt in risk based decision making although its acceptance shows interesting differences between different professions. Dans l’article suivant on utilise le cycle de décision pour illustrer le développement du traitement des incertitudes en mécanique des roches et en construction en roche dans les quarante années passées. La revue des phases du cycle de décision montre qu’on a fait du progrès dans chaque phase du cycle de décision, c’est à dire dans la caractérisation, dans l’analyse et la prédiction du comportement, dans l’actualisation et dans l’acte de décision, même si les concepts fondamentaux existaient déjà dans les années 1960. Les plus grands avancements scientifiques se trouvent dans le domaine de la caractérisation tandis que l’analyse prédictive profitait du développement de l’informatique qui a mené à des modèles plus complexes mais aussi plus pratiques. Le plus grand progrès est sans doute dans le domaine de l’acte de décision sur la base des risques. Ce procédé est devenu assez commun même s’il y a encore des différences d’acceptation entre différentes professions. DerÜberblick über die Phasen des Entscheidungsprozesses zeigt, dass bei der Anwendung in derFelsmechanik und im Felsbau, in allen Phasen d.h. bei der Charakterisierung, bei der analytischenVorhersage, beim Aktualisieren und bei der Entscheidungsfindung Fortschritte gemacht wurden,obwohl die grundlegenden Konzepte bereits in den 1960er Jahren existierten. Im Gebiet derCharakterisierung gab es wohl die grössten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen, während dieanalytische Vorhersage vor allem von den Fortschritten der Informatik profitierte, welchekomplexere wie auch praktischere Modelle möglich machte. Paper presented at the conference on Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for <mineral deposits> in sedimentary <basins>, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The Hg and Sb deposits of the Mediterranean and Circum-Pacific Belts are often found at elevated structural levels, suggesting that their preferential occurrence in young orogenic belts is not a fundamental metallogenic feature but merely reflects their chances of surviving post-orogenic peneplanation. In western Europe their emplacement appears often to be related to late orogenic extensional events accompanied by a notable increase in heat flow. Although Nikitovka and Almaden have quite different settings, both appear to be related to deep-reaching shears. Together with brittle fault zones at higher levels, these provided pathways for fluid phases that originated at least partially within the mantle. The Nikitovka deposits are located in the Donets segment of the 2 000 km Pripyat-Dniepr-Donets palaeorift in the East European Platform. Initiated in the mid-Devonian with a possible Precambrian precursor, its listric boundary faults displace the Moho from a depth of about 50 km north and south of the rift to 35 km along the axes of the Pripyat and Dniepr segments. The steep central anticline of the Donets segment, within which the main Hg-Sb district is located, is interpreted to be associated with a reactivated fault reaching into the upper mantle. The Almaden syncline, formed during the Variscan Orogeny, may be an older pull-apart basin or half-graben associated with the collapse of the Cadomian Orogenic Belt. It is situated on a major ENE-WSW-striking shear zone which may represent a Late Cadomian transfer zone reaching into the mantle

The modern Golden Cross mine entered the production phase in January 1992. The project is designed to produce over 100 000 oz/yr of gold and over 300 000 oz/yr of silver during a mine life of eight years. An open pit and an underground mine are operated producing around 850 000 t/yr of ore, to feed a conventional carbon-in-leach processing plant. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited (80%) and Viking Mining Company Limited (20 %). &nbsp; Since the start of production several major aspects of the design have altered. The underground mine began as a mechanised cut and fill operation. The cut and fill stoping progresses in 3.3 m flatback lifts with maximum stoping width of 6 m. Where the ore zone is wider than 6 m a post pillar cut and fill method is used. In 1993 a new bench mining plan was introduced between the 270 and 260 levels. Flatbacking continued in the footwall drives in anticipation of variability of the ore width and orientation. The development of levels below the main service 200 level has indicated a possibility of bulk mining the ore block rather than flatbacks. This could lower mining costs but also introduce higher dilution rates. Development is in the advanced stages for trialing this method.

However, when it does happen, nothing is more frightening than the sudden shaking of the earth beneath us - after all, we think of the ground we walk on as the unyielding, solid underpinning of our existence.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation. Some fall of material was anticipated; however, quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) during grouting, staged stope extraction and careful blast design minimised fall of material.CITATION:Proudman, A, Isles, J, Lawolo, R and Forster, G, 2017. This paper reframes the pivotal role that technical professionals play within complex operating assets to maximize value and realize full potential. This investigation focuses on the Rio Tinto Kennecott Technical group’s cultural journey, which is underpinned by an investment in its people. The conflict between legacy industry beliefs and the necessity for cultural change emerges. This is illustrated by a deep dive into the evolving case study of Kennecott’s Bingham Canyon Open Pit Mine Technical team. Here, a multi-faceted approach to cultural change is helping to unlock the team’s contribution to the life extension of an aging asset. Guided by a vision and strategic roadmap, this approach is part way through a 5-year implementation period and is yielding encouraging business outcomes.

"Although ore sorting in mining is not a new concept, sensor-based sorting has failed to gain broad acceptance due to perceived challenges with the technology. In order to gain wider applications, this research focuses on treating waste rock and low-grade ore to identify and test appropriate sensors and to evaluate the response. Results showed that amenability of rocks to sensor-based ore sorting is both sensor and ore specific. It was also observed that the efficiency (recovery) of sorting is directly influenced by the degree of heterogeneity of the rocks. The overall outcome showed that with the right sensor, several of the materials tested are amenable to sensor-based ore sorting. Mining companies could benefit from multiple economic and design impacts, such as lower energy cost, lower transportation costs, higher metal recoveries and smaller footprints that lead to more sustainable mining. This paper will focus on the effects of heterogeneity of rocks on sorting potential and efficiency.IntroductionSensor-based ore sorting has been attracting more attention since the pressure for effective resource extraction and management has increased. An urge to make most of the current deposits, and to make the low-grade deposits economic to mine has ushered the technology to find new ways to overcome the new challenges. No matter the terminology used, such as coarse beneificiation, waste rejection, particle or bulk sorting, the purpose of sensor-based ore sorting is to remove low-grade rocks before the comminution circuit, increasing the feed head grade and quality while reducing the energy costs related to comminution.Despite nominal advantages, there have always been some concerns that have impeded the intorduction and acceptance of the technology. One of the most important shortcomings of ore sorting is their capability, or capacity, to keep up with the high-tonnage mining. Some other issues that have been mentioned as drawbacks to sorting include installation cost of such devices, feed preparation for effiecient sorting along with accuracy of sorting and probability of false negatives (Manouchehri, 2003)."
