The location, features, quality, and extent of iron ore deposits are evaluated in this Bureau of Mines report. The results of pioneer beneficiation on Wyoming taconites and their success are discussed along with developments in the iron-ore mining industry, markets, and economics. Market potential, transportation, resource developments, taxation, cost of iron ore enterprises, and the future of Wyoming iron resources are evaluated. Although occurrences of iron ores in Wyoming were known prior to 1870, early production to 1900 was as a nonferrous metallurgical flux and as mineral pigment for paints. In 1901, the Hartville-Sunrise hematite deposits were available to the Western iron and steel industry and in 1962, the first western taconite operation was placed in production at Atlantic City, Wyo. This investigation disclosed the probability of other large iron deposits in Wyoming. Taconite in the Bradley Peak area of the Seminoe Mountains has a potentiality of 100 million tons; that in the Owl Creek Mountains may prove very large also. Pioneer beneficiation testing has been included, and results have been generally encouraging. Research continues on the large titaniferous magnetite deposits of Albany County, Wyo. At present high-density titaniferous magnetite is being mined and processed at Iron Mountain for heavy-aggregate and as a sized coating for underwater pipelines. Ample mineral raw materials needed for mining and processing Wyoming iron ores are available. Investments for iron-ore processing plants will generally be large, particularly for taconite and titaniferous magnetite.

"NVI Mining’s Myra Falls Operation is a 4,000 mtpd copper/zinc flotation circuit with by product gold of ~28,000 ounces per year. Gold recovery has historically averaged 40-55%, however, a portion of this was recovered in the zinc concentrate and received poor payment. Two Knelson CD-30 Concentrators have been operating in the grinding circuit since 1992, with gravity recovery averaging about 2-5% over that time period.The Myra Falls gravity circuit was one of the very first hard rock mining installations operating in the world with automated Knelsons. The mine has employed a unique and unusual upgrading method for the Knelson concentrate that had never been evaluated as to its efficiency. Recent Gravity Recoverable Gold Testing by McGill University, and mathematical modelling of the Gravity Circuit by Knelson Gravity Solutions indicated the gravity circuit was not living up to its potential. Myra Falls Personnel changed the upgrade system-operating regime, and a complete gravity audit of the grinding circuit was carried out, with the results confirming the initial suspicions. Gravity recovery increased from 5% to 15%, with overall gold recovery improving by 5%.INTRODUCTIONNVI Mining operates a 4000 tpd mine and mill complex on Vancouver Island. The Bureau of Mines made a study of mines and prospects of the Benton Range RARE II area (No. 5056), Mono County, California in October and November 1980. The study area is west of Owens Valley and 30 mi (40 km) north of Bishop, California. The mineral deposits were evaluated by examination of mines, prospects, and mining claims by the Bureau of Mines. Geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies were conducted by the Geological Survey. The principal mineral commodities of the Benton Range RARE II area are gold and silver but tungsten deposits may also extend into the area. Properties with resources are listed in table 1; their locations are shown on figure 1.

INTRODUCTION Traditionally, the purpose of mine ventilation has been defined as diluting, rendering harmless, and sweeping away hazardous gases which may accumulate in the mine workings. In addition, the ventilation sys- tem must keep the mine air as close as possible to the composition of the outside air in order to provide a healthy environment for mineworkers and to prolong the useful life of mine equipment. When plans are being developed for opening a new mine, sound engineering dictates that a calculated estimate be made of both the maximum air quantity requirement and the accept- able mine pressure (head) loss related to the under- ground layout and projections. For efficient mine ventilation, the two problem areas that demand constant attention are (1) the control of fugitive air (through short circuiting or leakage) and (2) the provision of ample airway capacity. Fugitive air is that quantity of air which enters the mine but short-circuits the mine ventilation system through improperly constructed stoppings, doors, overcasts, etc.; it represents an investment in power consumption (to move the air by the fan) while providing little, if any, return on the investment. Typically, efficient mines are those that can deliver 50% of the air handled by their fans to the working faces. Paying close attention to a new mine's ventilation system at the outset can provide numerous benefits during the later stages of mine development. It has often been noted that the main cause of trouble in many mine ventilation systems can be found within a radius of 2500 ft from the fan installation. Ample airway capacity is essential to maintain the mine's head loss within manageable limits. Similar to an industrial ventilation setting, the mine's headings are the ductwork for the handling of air. The difference between normal industrial ventilation and mine ventilation is apparent when more capacity is needed; a plant can install new or larger ductwork, but it is difficult for a mine to install new entries or enlarge existing entries. Air velocities are usually maintained under 800 fpm to limit the stirring up of dust in the intakes. With this in mind, it is usually simple to estimate the number of entries required in the ventilation system. The problem that often arises, though, is when the system's capacity is overestimated and the required head loss to achieve the desired quantity is excessive. Experience has shown that problems are often encountered when the mine's condition requires much more than three inches of water gage to ventilate the mine on a day-to-day basis. Thus, if proper attention is not paid to these parameters in the preplanning and initial development of a new mine, it may take an extremely high water gage to achieve the ultimate quantity. This chapter will not delve deeply into the theory of mine ventilation; many other books have been writ- ten on that subject. Instead, the following sections will point out the important considerations that should take place before the development of a mine ventilation system, as they relate to normal industry practice. FUNDAMENTALS OF AIRFLOW Volume Versus Water Gage The common method of measuring ventilation pressure is in terms of inches of water gage (wg); one inch of water corresponds to a pressure of 5.2 psf (pounds per square foot). Further, airflow follows a square-law relationship between volumes and pressures where, as shown in the previous section, a doubling of quantity requires a quadrupling of pressure. Table 1 shows how heads and quantities are related. Using Table 1, it is readily apparent that, for the same mining conditions, an increase in pressure from one inch wg to three inches wg results in only 34,640 cfm when the initial quantity is 20,000 cfm. Pressure Losses Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are caused by friction between the heading walls and the air stream and by shock losses due to abrupt changes of the air stream caused by obstructions. The common pressure-loss formula for mine ventilation is: [ ] where H is the pressure loss in inches of water gage, K is the coefficient of friction, L is the length of the airway in feet, 0 is the airway perimeter in feet, V is the air velocity in feet per minute, and A is the cross-sectional area of the airway in square feet. Table 2 lists the US Bureau of Mines schedule of friction factors (K) for mine airways. Recent research indicates that the values of K are slightly less for coal mines than those presented in the USBM Schedule, and Table 3 should be consulted in this instance. It should be

Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger miners have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.

"The Isle aux Morts Prospect is the first polymetallic, sulphide mineralization reported from the Port aux Basques Complex of southwest Newfoundland. Zn-Pb-Cu-Ba-Ag mineralization hosted by quartz-muscovite semipelite, occurs at the contact between a quartz of eldspathic unit and pelitic unit with intercalated amphibolite are minerals comprise sphalerite-galenachalcopyrite, in order of decreasing abundance. The principal gangue minerals are quartz, muscovite, feldspar and barite. Three morphologic types of mineralization are present: massive with more than 50% sulphide, flanked on one or both sides by disseminated and/or banded types. The massive type of mineralization exhibits a :durchbewegung"" fabric of rounded silicate fragments in a sulphide matrix, characteristic of intensely deformed and metamorphosed sulphide bodies. Sulphide minerals have been mobilized and recrystallized and share the same metamorphic and deformational history as the host rocks. Quartz muscovite schist which hosts disseminated mineralization, displays a K2O enrichment and Na2O depletion, that is typical of alteration associated with sulphide bodies in volcano sedimentary sequences. Isotopic ratios of sulphur are comparable to those of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits.Despite penetrative deformation and metamorphic recrystallization, features of the local geology and the mineralization suggest that the Isle aux Morts Prospect is volcanogenic in origin. IntroductionFollowing the release of a government lake sediment survey (Butler and Davenport, 1980), which indicated anomalous concentrations of metals in southwest Newfoundland, geologists with Utah Mines Ltd. discovered the Isle aux Morts Prospect, a Zn-Pb-Cu-Ba-Ag showing, located approximately 15 km northeast of Port aux Basques (Figs. I and 2). The mineralization occurs in quartz-muscovite schist and is the first significant basemetal discovery in the Port aux Basques Complex."

This paper describes the results of a detailed analysis of a loess deposit at the deep foundations test site established by the Kansas Department of Transportation. Multiple CPT, SPT, and pressuremeter tests were conducted as part of the investigation. This paper includes an evaluation of the effectiveness of common correlations used with the CPT, SPT when used for classification of loess and estimating its properties. Results show that common correlations must be used with caution as significant errors in estimation may result from using methods developed for other soil types. Laboratory testing included direct shear, triaxial, collapse, and consolidation testing, with many of the tests conducted on both vertically and horizontally oriented samples to evaluate anisotropic behavior. The results showed that strength properties could be considered to be isotropic.

Traditional iron ore wet beneficiation plants are large multilevel structures, often integrated into centralised processing plants. They are characterised by sizeable footprints, substantial water and power consumption, inflexible design and low scalability. Significant design changes that address these issues need to be made before relocatable modular plants become feasible. Firstly, large amounts of processing water are required in standard wet plants, so it is vital that water consumption is reduced to an absolute minimum. Secondly, the process of depositing tailings into tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is environmentally destructive, consumes significant power and requires lengthy approvals to be completed. Thirdly, modules need to be easily and quickly relocatable.The solution to reducing water usage and eliminating TSF requirements is accomplished by providing a tailings dewatering and dry-stacking capability into a separate module. This equipment needs to dewater tailings to a point (typically below 20 per cent moisture) where dry stacking becomes possible – design is mainly driven by material rheology and particle size distribution (PSD). In this respect, a flexible and scalable strategy is employed to dewatering modules, allowing a variety of components such as dewatering cyclone clusters, paste thickeners, fine mesh vibrating screens and filter presses to be used to achieve the necessary moisture level, enabling the final dry stacking to be accomplished by a simple telescopic stacking system. Plant relocatability also requires modules to comply with mass and dimensional constraints, as well as ‘plug and play’ ease-of-use features.For coarse particle upgrade, jigs provide a low-cost and effective solution, whereas fine and ultra-fine Fe units can be recovered using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Recently, sensor sorting – a dry process using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray transmission, laser or other sensors – has begun to make an impact in coarse particle separation, although capacities are still low. The overall objective of a plant is to provide an Fe upgrade of four to five per cent with a feed of up to 4 Mt/a and a recovery of approximately 50 per cent.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. Adequate load transfer is considered essential for optimum ground support and is increasingly important in weak roof and/or high stress environments. If adequate load transfer is achieved not only can this have a positive impact on the resulting roof behavior, but it may also allow the use of lower and hence more economic densities of roof support. A wide variety of post-groutable cable bolts are currently in use in the Australian coal mining industry, each of varying capacity, design, and grouting methodology. Though all of the cables are supplied with the appropriate steel specification, strength, and modulus data, the Australian coal mining industry does not have access to a comprehensive and comparative database on the corresponding load transfer performance, which is a critical problem. On the basis of the above, this paper describes the methodology and results of a laboratory pull testing program that aims to assess the impact of cable bolt design on load transfer, and specifically, the impact on the capacity and stiffness of the anchorage. As part of the testing program, 19 cables were tested including (1) plain-strand cables installed in holes drilled with 28 to 55 mm diameter drill bits and (2) bulbed and nutcaged cables installed in holes drilled with 42 to 64 mm diameter drill bits. Other parameters assessed included the significance of smooth and profiled wire, wire packing, and expanded geometry bulbs. The main results of the testing indicate that in comparison to plain-strand cables, if the cable is bulbed or nutcaged, the capacity of the anchor can increase by up to 400%, and the peak stiffness by between one and two orders of magnitude. The results also indicate that increasing hole diameter may have a positive impact on load transfer in the case of bulbed or nutcaged cables and a negative impact on plain-strand cables. No conclusive results were obtained with regard to the impact of grout strength on load transfer.

It is common practice in the mineral processing industry to use hydrocyclones for particle classification. However, classification in the UG2 platinum circuits using the hydrocyclone poses major challenges due to the differences in density between silica and chromite, the two major components of this ore. Silica, the PGM carrying component, has an average density of 2.7 and the barren chromite component has an average density of 4.5. When conventional and flat bottom cyclones are used there is a misplacement of particles due to differences in density leading to inefficiencies in the classification by size. As a result of the density effect, coarse silica reports to the overflow, resulting in loss of recovery, and fine chromite reports to the underflow, resulting in loss of milling capacity and unnecessary production of fine chromite. A classifier based on a different concept was required in the classification of UG2 platinum ore. The three-product cyclone, which is a hydrocyclone with two concentric vortex finders to produce three distinct products, has been tested in the UG2 ore application and indications are that misplacement of particles due to differences in the component densities can be minimized through the use of this unit. Industrial and pilot plant trials were conducted and indications are that the three-product cyclone can be installed to selectively produce a middlings stream that can be screened using Pansep screens to provide a screen oversize, which is predominantly coarse silica that can be preferentially reground to recover the PGM values contained in the coarse silica.

Ausmelt Technology has a unique capability of removing the impurities, phosphorus and sulphur, from the feed materials to the process. Sulphur is removed to the gas phase almost completely because of the interactions of ore and coal in the reaction region at the top surface of the slag bath. Phosphorus is removed to the slag phase, with both basic and higher, controlled iron oxide levels in slag being achieved in the process. The significance of these features of the process relate to the production of pig iron with very low levels of these impurities for the further processing to steel, and to the treatment of high phosphorus and high sulphur raw materials. The marketability of pig iron and the raw materials are discussed in relation to this feature of Auslron.

The application of underground pre-concentration technology to narrow vein mining has the potential to change the entire economics of bulk mining methods when used in narrow vein situations. The rejection of waste at or near the face means that a higher-grade ore can be sent to surface. The waste rock can be reused directly as backfill. Swelling of the muck through blasting means that only 60 to 65% can be used as fill. Planning and scheduling of the fill usage is key to the success of this method. Through the use of simulation and system analysis, this paper examines the planning and scheduling implications of underground pre-concentration when applied to traditional narrow vein mining methods (cut-and-fill /drift-and-fill, longhole, AVOCA). It considers the logistical factors that represent potential system bottlenecks that are key to understanding the correct implementation and control strategies.

The Bureau of Mines used a linear cutting apparatus equipped with a 7-inch disk cutter to cut grooves in marble, limestone, granite, and quartzite under a normal force of 7,000 lb. The size distribution of the muck for various grooves was determined through sieve analysis. A statistical search showed that Weibull distribution describes the size distribution better than other available functions. Results indicate that fineness modulus, chip population, and dimension of the largest chip can be used as indicators of cutting efficiency. The results correlate with those obtained from the boring machines and other lab experiments. INTRODUCTION The analysis and design of underground structures to resist vibratory motion due to earthquakes has been of interest to engineers for several decades. The dynamic stability of a powerhouse cavern was considered in the 1960s (Campbell and Dodd, 1967). About the same time, the designers of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit system developed procedures for analyzing the subaqueous tunnels placed under San Francisco Bay and the tunnels excavated along the land portions of the alignment (Kuesel, 1969). Japanese designers developed fairly sophisticated procedures for analyzing subaqueous tunnels during the late 1960s and early 1970s (Kuribayashi et al., 1974). In the past decade, proposals to site important critical underground facilities in regions with moderate to high seismic activity have increased the interest in earthquake engineering of underground structures. Seismic designs or seismic studies have been conducted for rock caverns for storage of petroleum or location of power plants (Yamahara et al., 1977; Glass, 1976), buried tanks for fuels or rad¬ioactive waste (Fukushima et al., 1977; URS/Blume, 1976), tunnels for disposal of nuclear waste (Yanev and Owen, 1978; Wahi et al., 1980), and urban mass transit tunnels (Monsees and Merrit, 1984). One of the greatest drivers of the interest in seismic analysis and design of underground structures has been the proposals to dispose of high-level nuclear waste in mined repositories some 300 to 600 m (approximately 1,000 to 2,000 ft) below the ground surface. In 1979, the authors, in conjunction with Professor Tor Brekke, presented a paper on an evaluation and design procedure used in a study of a proposed nuclear waste repository (Owen, Scholl, and Brekke, 1979).

The phenomenon of spontaneous combustion is one of the major hazards encountered in underground coal mines both from the safety aspects and on economic grounds. Every occurrence, however small, if not tackled effectively in the early stages can develop into open fire, or explosion of gas or coal dust. In terms of economy, even dealing with small incidents may be costly in terms of labour and materials, and in case of a sealing off of a district being necessitated, the loss of face equipment and sterilization of reserves is potentially great. Therefore, expense and effort in prevention and detection of such heating, together with a high state of readiness for dealing with likely event, is completely justified and may be considered as a sound investment. In order to achieve this investment, it may be worth to pinpoint the centre of the fire occurring due to autogenously heating which is supposed to be great assistance to inert it at a least cost and time. Therefore, it is the aim of this work to model the spontaneous combustion in the goaf.

At a mine in central PA, high horizontal stresses have caused long running roof falls resulting in hazardous conditions for the miners and the premature abandonment of panels. Because of these conditions, the mine requested assistance of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in utilizing the 'advance and relieve method to mitigate the affects of horizontal stress on the mine roof. "Advance and relieve" mining involves the removal of a pillar or a portion of a pillar during development, thereby creating a cave along one side of the panel. Following cave development, the horizontal stress is relieved over the workings adjacent to the cave in the active panel. The mine has used this system in three panels with a significant reduction in stress damage and no large roof falls.

Wangaloa Coal Mine opened in 1945, and by the time of its closure in 1989, had produced 750 000 tonnes of coal and disturbed an area of 75 ha. The original mining licence required land rehabilitation to exotic forestry, however the current owner, Solid Energy, has worked with Crown Minerals and local councils to write a new rehabilitation objective. The site is now being stabilised and replanted with native species, and may be available for public use before the coal mining licence expires in 2007. Site discharge permits expire in 2017, and by that time, it is anticipated that discharge water chemistry will be similar to background levels. MWH are currently contracted for management of the mine rehabilitation project. The Kaitangata coal unit mined at Wangaloa is sulfurous lignite with associated pyrite. Kaitangata coal contains 3.2 wt per cent sulfur, which is higher than most New Zealand coals. Initial analyses at Wangaloa indicate low pH (2.56.2) values in soil, groundwater and surface waters as a result of acid rock drainage (ARD) processes, leading to increased metal mobility and challenging conditions for vegetation. Pilot studies indicate pinus radiata needles contain up to 67 mg/kg boron, and elevated As, Cu and Zn concentrations in surface waters. The main lake at the site has a pH of approximately 4.9, despite lime dosage in 2002. There is a real need for a complete geochemical model of the Wangaloa coal mine. Such a model could be applied to similar restoration projects, and would assist by pinpointing geochemical processes and toxic metal relationships most harmful to the receiving environments. Using this model, rehabilitation in the future will be targeted and more efficient. This project is part of a larger scheme to characterise and model the Wangaloa mine site restoration, including waters, soil, vegetation, geology and invertebrates.

In mining and quarrying operations, electric motors can fail for a variety of reasons. Some failures are directly linked to demanding production requirements and contaminant-laden environments and, consequently, are difficult to prevent. A sizeable number, however, are caused by ?offline? factors that have nothing to do with production. These include inadequate or substandard motor repair practices and improper motor shipping, storage and installation. The fact that failures are at times attributable to repair- or rebuild-related errors and problems raises the stakes when selecting an electric motor repair provider. Teaming with high-quality electric motor shops can help a company reduce failures due to offline factors, improving motor reliability and cutting downtime costs. Regardless of location or annual revenues, the best motor shops have similar business cultures and share many of the same characteristics.

This circular describes the activities and publications of the Bureau of Mines, Explosives Research Laboratory4 for the fiscal year 1960 (July 1, 1959 -June 30, 1960). Part 1 describes briefly the principal projects that were active during the report period, and presents some data not scheduled for publication elsewhere in the near future. Certain of the results are only preliminary and should be regarded as tentative, pending the findings of the completed investigation. Publications that appeared during the report period are listed and described briefly in part 2. In general, the research activities reported in these publications antedate fiscal year 1960. The published material relating to activities that are still current is indicated by references in part 1.
