Cromanite?is a new high-strength austenitic stainless steel developed by Columbus Stainless. It contains approximately 19 percent chromium, 10 per cent manganese and 0,5 per cent nitrogen. Cromanite can be welded successfully, but due to the high nitrogen content of the base metal, certain precautions have to be taken to ensure sound welds with the desired combination of properties. Although no matching filler metals are currently available, Cromanite can be welded using a range of commercially available stainless steel welding consumables. Welds produced using E309L, E307, E307Si and E312 filler wires are resistant to hot cracking and the formation of nitrogen-induced porosity, but the hardness, strength, ductility and toughness of the welds are generally inferior to those of the base metal. In applications where full use is made of Cromanite?s high strength, welds with matching strength levels would be required. In wear applications, where Cromanite is used primarily for its work-hardening properties and corrosion resistance, lower strength welds would probably be acceptable. Welds produced using E307 filler metal demonstrate the best combination of properties for use in wear applications. The welds display high rates of work-hardening that would result in increases in hardness and strength when subjected to abrasive or high impact environments.

This paper details the approach adopted to upgrade the current metallurgical facilities at both the Driefontein and Kloof Gold Mines in the Republic of South Africa. Goldfields Ltd operates eight metallurgical plants within South Africa of which three have recently been upgraded to replace the older technology previously installed, with modern equipment. This upgrade was undertaken with a view to improving extraction efficiencies and to reduce operating costs. The upgrade was undertaken in a phased approach with the first phase focused on the replacement of the filtration/zinc precipitation processes with modern pumpcell carbon-in-pulp technology. Included in this upgrade phase was the installation of an automated hands-free electrowinning cell, which represents the first commercial application of its kind in the industry. The second phase of the upgrade entailed replacement of the multiple comminution stages previously installed with large SAG and SAG/Ball mill combinations. Due to the rapid return on these projects, a fast-track approach was adopted which necessitated the purchase of available good conditioned second-hand mills from both within South Africa as well as in Australia. Goldfields Ltd is a large mining house with gold mining operations in South Africa, Australia and Ghana. A well advanced PGM exploration project is underway in Finland- Arctic Platinum.

Close-in blasting occurs every time the use o f explosives for excavation or demolition requires the surpassing of the commonly accepted cosmetic damage criteriain order to arrive at reasonable and practical explosive weights per delay. One of the many effective blast design procedures consists in establishing a reasonable charge weight per delay with respect to scale, geometry, costs, requirements and constraints of the project. Once this reasonable charge weight per delay is determined, it’s environmental effects have to be estimated with respect to the surroundings.

In keeping with past custom, it is the purpose of this publication to bring up to date previously published lists of equipment that meets safety standards of the bureau of Mines so that the mining industry may be informed as to the development and availability of equipment that can be used safely. The present lists supplement those in Bulletin 543. Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953; Information Circular 7722, Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54; and Information Circular [40], Permissible Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1955-56. These [ew] lists also contain equipment meeting those standards revised since the last listing. A revision of Schedule 16C (now Schedule 16D4/) was officially approved on September 28. 1958. Schedule 29 was another standard revised in 1958. The revision was officially approved on September 8. 1958, and is known as Schedule 29A5/ .

The initial Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP),Version 1.0, was released at the 19th Ground Control Conference. This original program has since been updated to Version 2.3 which was released in May, 2001. This paper describes the additional features of Version 2.3, focusing primarily on the following three aspects: (1) including uncontrolled convergence into the design requirements for standing roof supports, (2) the addition of design procedures for cable bolts as an alternative secondary roof support, and (3) the addition of new standing roof support technologies. Another new feature which should facilitate the development of design criteria for standing roof support is the capability to define ground reaction curves through convergence measurements alone without having to make support loading measurements. There are several other new features provided in Version 2.3 which are only briefly addressed in the paper. These include: (1) additional graphics capabilities to facilitate rapid assessment of support comparisons, (2)an East-West designation for support selection to more accurately provide cost and support availability data, (3) additional safety measures including a safety factor to identify support design near the peak support capacity, checks to see if the support dimensions comply with aspect ratio requirements, and a measure of roof coverage for the design layout of the support system. These new features of STOP provide more capabilities to design and analyze secondary roof support systems for conditions which could not be fully analyzed in the original version of the program.

"INTRODUCTION The U. S. Bureau of Mines in 1930 and 1931 made a study of the properties and characteristics of liquid-oxygen explosives (L.O.X.) at the request of one of the largest users, in order to determine and eliminate the hazards attending its use.This report deals with the examination of absorbents for L.O.X. to (1) determine their most desirable and most undesirable characteristics, (2) to find ways and means of desensitizing absorbents to mechanical shock, and (3) to determine the effect that such desensitization of absorbents has on the explosive Characteristics of L.O.X.ABSORBENT MATERIALS The absorbent used in driving the Simplon Tunnel, the earliest project in which L.O.X. was used, was composed of crude petroleum, soot, and kieselguhr. During the World War, powdered cork, soot, sawdust, powdered straw, or other similar powdered materials were mentioned in the German military instructions for use of ""liquid air"" explosives. Excellent metal quality, with lower power requirement, is attained in electrorefining titanium by using internal heating of the fused-salt bath. An internal heater provides more effective heat utilization, simplifies structural components in cell design, and prolongs cell life by eliminating direct application of heat to the cell container. This Bureau of Mines report covers one phase of the research in progress at the Electrometallurgical Experiment Station at Boulder City, Nev., for improving the techniques and lowering the total power requirement for electro-refining titanium metal.

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. This report describes the loading and transportation practices employed at the zinc-lead mines of The Eagle-Picher Co., Jo Daviess County, Ill., and Lafayette County, Wis. The report also gives a brief history of the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc-lead district and the operations of the company in the area. The diesel-powered, rubber-tired loading and haulage equipment is described and illustrated from the operational point of view only, and an analysis is made of the materials-handling system without going into health and safety Factors. The costs per ton of the various components of mechanical loading, underground haulage, underground crushing, and hoisting for fiscal year 1960 are tabulated.

Introduction Tanco History Tanco is sometimes known as the Bernic Lake Mine. It is located about 180 km east-northeast of Winnipeg close to the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. Tanco operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity and centrifugal concentration methods along with a flotation process which recovers ultra-fine tantalum. All tantalum concentrates are shipped to Cabot Supermetals, Boyertown, Pa., for the production of tantalum chemicals and metals. Tanco also produces lithium products from spodumene ore. The lithium concentrates from Tanco are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock to the on-site chemical plant dedicated to the production of cesium formate, a high density drilling fluid. Tantalum milling operations commenced in 1969. In the early years of the operation, feed grades were three to four times as high as they are today. Coarse-grained tantalum mineralization with complete tantalum liberation at sizes of 300 µm allowed for easy recovery with conventional equipment such as spirals and shaking tables. Over the years, the process and feed material to the plant have drastically changed. Due to drastically reduced liberation sizes, efforts have been made to try to recover as much of the liberated particles as possible in order to maintain acceptable recoveries.

Primary lead production using the lead blast furnace in conventional practice is carried out using sinter feed. At YMG, China, the sinter plant has been replaced with a lead ISASMELT furnace. The ISASMELT furnace produces lead bullion plus a high-lead slag, which is cast into lumps to provide a suitable feed for the blast furnace. In the present study the relative microstructures and reduction characteristics of industrial lead sinters and synthetic ISASMELT slag in CO/CO2 gas mixtures have been measured and compared. The microstructure and property changes, and the mechanisms of reduction in each case are examined and discussed. The results of the study are used to explain the successful implementation of cast slag feed in commercial ISASMELT- lead blast furnace practice. "The analysis of meso- and micro-scale textural attributes has been undertaken on ore samples from the Ernest Henry iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposit in NW QLD. Quantified textural data including grain size, shape and mineral association have been extracted from classified images of core with the aim to better predict potential mineral processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and flotation. Data have been extracted from images of intact core at meso- and micro-scales using high resolution continuous images collected using automated core-logger technology, SEM-based and optical microscopy platforms.The results of this study will show examples of quantified size, shape and mineral association data from meso- and micro-scale classified images. Analysis of the data shows that there are domains of variable grain size and mineral association that can potentially be related to crushing and liberation behaviour. The trends that are observed at the drill-core (meso-) scale are consistent with those at the micro-scale. The results from the micro-scale analysis show that the domains defined at the core-scale have clearly different chalcopyrite sizes and shapes as well as variable bulk mineralogy.INTRODUCTIONInnovations in technology have allowed automated extraction of information about mineral shape, grain size and mineral association, i.e., texture, from meso- and micro-scale images of intact rocks. Automated temporary roof support (ATRS) systems have been incorporated into roof bolters since the 1970?s. During roof bolting, many injuries have occurred from large pieces of draw rock falling inby the ATRS beam and tipping back into the operator?s area. Other injuries have occurred due to smaller, sharp rocks falling onto the operator?s hand and arm during initiation of roof bolt drilling. These injuries are attributed to weak immediate roof, sometimes called roof skin failure. Even though ATRS systems support the roof and provide a measure of protection against roof skin failure, additional hazards sometimes do exist immediately inby and outby the supported roof. Design innovations such as the ATRS mounted rocker pad deflector systems have been designed to improve the roof bolter operator safety. This paper will inform the reader of the hazards, machine evolution through different design solutions, and the current state of the art in preventing roof skin failure injuries when roof bolting.

Beneficiation studies were conducted on a Portuguese feldspar ore, in order to obtain final products capable of being used in the ceramic industry. A simple scrubbing operation is enough to break the lumps in the feed. The ore deposit contains ca 35 x 106tonnesfrom which, by screening, three main products could be obtained. This paper focuses on the beneficiation of the 500/74 µm fraction, which constitutes about 27% of the ore, assaying 9.42% Al2O3,equivalent to approximately ca 46% feldspar, with a mean iron content of 0.29% iron oxides. Magnetic separation and froth flotation testwork was carried out, in order to decrease the iron contamination and increase the feldspar content. Magnetic separation alone decreased the iron content of the feed to values between 0.04 and 0.08% iron oxides with an average yield greater than 90%. Flotation with HF, provided a feldspar recovery of 45?46% with a concentrate assaying 17.6% Al2O3. The use of H2SO4, gave a recovery of 35?36% of feldspar concentrate, assaying 16.1% Al2O3. However, economic and environmental advantages of using sulphuric acid may compensate for the lower mass recovery. The iron content of0.12% iron oxides in these concentrates, could be reduced to 0.04?0.05%, by further magnetic separation.

Extensive site investigations revealed that abandoned shallow mine workings exist under a site planned for construction of a major new facility. Since the mine voids were susceptible to collapse, they were stabilized by grouting. After completion of the mine remediation, three types of deep foundations (micro-piles, auger-cast piles, and drilled piers) were considered for this site. Micro-piles spread the load via the bond between the pile and the bedrock. Without significant length socketed in rock, the axial load of auger-cast piles and drilled piers has to be concentrated on end bearing. Although spreading the load is preferable in this environment, economic consideration dictated the choice of drilled piers for construction.

A generalization of Gy?s model for the fundamental sampling error introduced the new ?parameter for the dependent selection of particles?, denoted as Cij. This allows for modeling deviations from the ideal situation where the selection of a pair of particles is composed of two independent selections. The generalized model potentially leads to more accurate variance estimates in the case of clustering of particles, differences in densities or sizes of the particles or repulsive inter-particle forces. A straightforward and practically applicable method is needed for the determination of this parameter for miscellaneous mixtures in industrial settings. In this contribution, the feasibility of using digital image analysis to determine this parameter Cij, will be demonstrated. Line transect sampling of a digital image was used to construct a transition probability matrix. A new algorithm to derive quantitative estimates for Cij will be presented and discussed. The applicability was verified by a photograph of zirconium silicate particles of sizes typical for industries dealing with pharmaceutical, food/feed, and environmental applications. Conditions affecting the practical applicability are identified and potential pitfalls will be discussed, including e.g. how a potential unrepresentative surface can affect the quality of the estimate of Cij.

On-the-job training (OJT) is a very common method of teaching job skills. Much of the training is done by experienced workers. This paper discusses small investments that can help improve the effectiveness of OJT. Effective OJT involves some structure and planning in the transfer of responsibility for task performance from the trainer to the novice. Assisting the OJT trainer could involve helping develop up-to-date job analyses and offering strategies for teaching and evaluating job skills. The scope of this paper addresses (1) organizational considerations supporting structured OJT, (2) general strategies for structuring OJT, (3) a typical approach for conducting OJT, (4) characteristics and duties of OJT trainers, and (5) limitations of OJT as a teaching method. Health, safety, and operational skills can be connected through training. Haul truck operator training is used to illustrate some of the concepts discussed in this paper.

The use of differences in specific gravity between minerals to separate them has long been utilized in the extractive industries. The environmental and cost benefits of the commercialized forms of these processes are well understood and widely used. Gravity concentration is used inter alia in the primary beneficiation of gold, diamonds, coal, tin, ferrous metal ores and andalusite. The potential for economic loss due to poor performance of these gravity processes is significant, but diverse in manifestation and regular process monitoring can prevent or at least reduce these losses. The measurement of performance of gravity processes has always presented a challenge, due primarily to the masses of material involved and the physical nature of the processes, generally typified by long reporting time, and hazardous materials (such as Tetrabromoethane) for float and sink type tests. The development of density tracers has improved this situation, however recovery of these tracers from the process streams created the next set of challenges, requiring significant manpower to physically remove tracers from product dewatering screens. Additions to these tracers (magnetic or x-ray fluorescent) eased the recovery mechanism issues but made them much more expensive to produce, hence operators became concerned about losses during process testing. In addition, magnetic recovery of smaller size tracers by a magnet suspended above a loaded screen panel is still problematic. The development of new low cost magnetic tracers has improved statistical significance of tracer tests, as the tracers themselves can be bought and used in much larger quantities, whilst still remaining economically viable. Coupled with the development of effective magnetic recovery technology, such as the Gekko MagScreen, for even fine sized tracers, on-line, continuous tracer testing is now becoming a reality. Whilst the development of high technology radio frequency detection tracer systems continues, enabling the real time measurement of the process and interpretation of results, miniaturization and recovery of these tracers, which is critical given their costs at present, remains an issue. Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million tom of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization - "scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who bum coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. Regulatory, cost and technical performance issues currently impact the use of coal ash and other coal combustion by-products (CCB).

This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.
