The steps for the beneficiation of iron ores differ from ore to ore, depending on the mineralogical phases of the particular iron ore and the nature of the association of the gangue minerals with iron oxide in that ore. The extent to which the beneficiation can be undertaken economically depends both on the amount and the nature of the gangue. The analysis of the phases present in an orebody optimises the mining and process operations (separation, beneficiation, sintering, etc).X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides qualitative and quantitative information about the main ore phases as well as the gangue mineralogy and the amorphous content present in a sample. In addition, modern quantification methods such as Rietveld refinement allow the calculation of the distribution of elements in solid solutions such the substitution of Fe with Al in goethite or hematite.The use of high speed detectors has made XRD an important tool for grade and process control. Finger printing of XRD data can facilitate multi-dimensional mapping of ore deposits and drill cores, identifying regions of favourable mineral compositions. Grade control using XRD can be completely automated and controlled remotely.The two case studies in this paper demonstrate how XRD and finger printing can be used for grade control, process optimisation and quality control of a goethitic and a magnetitic iron ore. The enormous potential of XRD as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ores will be demonstrated.CITATION:K÷nig, U, 2013. It is certainly an honor to have been invited to address the Deep Foundation's Annual Meeting on such a vast and weighty topic as "Present to Future Design Considerations of Deep Foundations." Acknowledging the enormity of this 30-minute assignment, I hope to at least scratch the surface of the topic deep enough to generate some thought and reflection. Design considerations, be they current or future, bring to mind a number of important subtopics which comprise the design process. As shown by Figure 1, a flow chart of this process describes, in general terms, the sequence of a deep foundation design.

In past years, Chile has been the largest copper producer in the world and for 2002 mining represented country average of 10 % of the GDP, accounting for 47 % of the total exportation. As copper sulphides are the main mining resources in the country, the metal is produced using the classical processes of flotation and pyrometallurgical extraction. Seven copper smelter plants, which extends from the northern Atacama desert to the central part of the country produced1,522,000 metric tons of fine copper in 2002, approximately one half of total copper concentrate production, with a notorious environmental impact due to the great amount of slag produced during these extraction steps. In this work, a global characterization of copper pyrometallurgical slags produced and disposed of in Chile and worldwide is done, and the concept of total project development is considered to explain the scopes of the study, recovering different compounds and generating new activities around mining. The presentation is completed with the proposal of various methods and techniques being developed today in a joint project between smelter plants and the University of Concepción, with the support of the Chilean government and mining companies, addressed to generate new materials from copper slag. Recovery of copper, molybdenum, precious metals, silica and iron, that is the most abundant component of the slag, are the goals for this research. Metals, commercial compounds, alloys and different forms of iron oxides for steel industry are proposed products.

To meet the energy requirements, hydroelectric projects are planned and executed in many countries. Though these projects requires a high capital investment, the returns are regular with minimum maintenance after commissioning of the project and are ecofriendly. Bhutan is situated in the eastern Himalayas and covers an area of 38,394km2 (14824.01sq. miles. It is bordered by India in East, South and West and by Tibet in the North. The hydropower potential of the country is estimated at 30,000MW, out of which around 5% has been harnessed.

Five different types of drilling systems were developed under the flexible drill program that was initiated by the Federal Bureau of Mines to protect roof bolter operators. The systems were designed for underground coal mines with seams as low as 30 inches, and with roof bolts longer than the height of the seam opening. Four of the developed systems were true flexible drills; the fifth was a remote-controlled, automatic rod changer concept. Only two of the five firms successfully completed testing requirements under the original contracts: BendixCorp.,4 with a true-flex drill; and Ingersoll-Rand Research, Inc., with the rod changer concept. The Bendix drill was rated best, and the Ingersoll-Rand drill was rated second. Because of the closeness of the ratings and the vast differences in the two development concepts, both systems had sufficient potential to justify further development funding for design updating and testing. Also, both systems warranted consideration for inclusion into other ongoing development projects under both safety and energy directed programs.

El presente trabajo señala el proyecto de remediación de los relaves mineros realizado en la relavera Ticapampa, ubicado en el Distrito de Ticapampa – Huaráz, región Ancash, con el objetivo de remediar los relaves de TICAPAMPA depositados por más de 30 años y que contaminan al río Santa, fuente principal de irrigación del Valle del Callejón de Huaylas. El proyecto comprende la extracción de contaminantes del pasivo ambiental de Ticapampa a través de la flotación de los sulfuros de fierro, y la obtención de un material inerte (con bajo contenido de sulfuros contaminantes) para la fabricación de productos cerámicos por medio de resinas recientemente desarrolladas.

There were no significant changes in the mineral industries of the smaller Caribbean Islands during 1980. Imported petroleum requirements continued to erode economic gains that may have occurred in other sectors. Some relief may be forthcoming as more qualified Caribbean countries take advantage of Trinidad and Tobago's petroleum product financing program (see Trinidad and Tobago). There were no crude oil discoveries in these areas during 1980, although some geophysical testing around the British Virgin Islands and Antigua war underway. In March 1980, the Government of Antigua sold a 75% interest in the 16,000-barrel- per-day West Indies Oil Co. refinery to the Swiss Intermaritime Bank and Intermaritime Management Services for $6 million. The new refinery company is called the National Petroleum Co. Shutdown since 1976, it was originally planned for the refinery to reopen in 1980, but refurbishing has proved to be more extensive than anticipated. The reopening is now expected in 1981.

The deterioration of concrete, steel, and timber is a serious hindrance to construction in marine and corrosive environments. Composite materials such as fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) can offer performance advantages for construction in these environments. In the last decade, piling made of FRP composites has been used experimentally throughout North America. However, composites face obstacles because they do not have a long track-record of use in civil engineering structures. A comprehensive review of the current experience in research, testing, design, and practice of composite piling is presented in this paper.

Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), located in north-western Queensland, is an underground copper/gold sublevel caving operation currently producing over 6 Mt/a of ore. The mass mining method of sublevel caving (SLC) used at EHM involves systematically blasting a series of uphole rings in parallel ore drives and drawing the broken ore using a top-down approach. Each ore drive contains multiple precharged rings to prevent having to charge in close proximity to the brow of the previously fired ring; however, the current initiation system still involves ‘hooking up’ all detonator lead cords of the first precharged ring. The unstable nature of a rill and working close to a brow presents hazards to personnel completing the hook-up process. There is also a business risk of ore loss when damaged ground support completely prevents access to the next precharged ring. If the hook-up step could be eliminated, the risk to personnel and the business would be significantly reduced.EHM engaged Orica Mining Services in 2016 to trial their WebGenTM 100 – wireless electronic blasting system (WEBSTM) for the first time in an underground mining environment. Having successfully signal-tested the equipment, two test holes were initiated, followed by a single production ring and then multiple production rings. In total, 30 production rings were successfully fired underground at EHM in 2017. To do this, WEBSTM was successfully integrated into EHM’s current charging and firing process, resulting in no business delays or loss to production. None of the 30 rings required hooking up and all were initiated from the surface with no personnel underground. A high level of ownership from all personnel involved ensured the trial was a success, and provided scope for wireless detonators to be used successfully on a large scale – both at EHM and other sublevel caving operations. The initial application for reflectorless laser technology was for profiling rock faces to determine front row burden and improve flyrock control and airblast. Over the past fifteen years a number of laser systems have been developed for general ground modeling purposes and GPS offsets, but these advances have yet to gain common acceptance in construction, mining and quarry blasting. This paper will outline a number of applications for reflectorless laser technology, including the latest method for rock face profiling, mapping, and 3-D modeling to calculate available and excavated rock volumes. Drilling deviation measurements will be presented in conjunction with rock face profiling to demonstrate how this information can be used to improve blast results. In complicated excavations, the actual quantity of rock excavated for payment purposes and the amount of overbreak can be very controversial. Procedures to calculate these volumes using laser technology will be outlined and comparisons will be made between these results and traditional techniques.

As the popularity of precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels is growing in North America, some problems related to grouting of, and near, these linings are starting to appear. The installation of a segmental lining behind a TBM requires that the annular space around the lining be quickly filled with grout to prevent collapse of the ground. In practice, the filling of the annulus is frequently delayed and takes place a distance behind the machine typically via grout ports centrally located in the segments. If partial collapse of the annulus has occurred, it may become necessary to use higher grouting pressures in an attempt to distribute the grout. There have been several occasions where these increased pressures have caused damage to the tunnel linings. Similarly, compaction grouting adjacent to a tunnel lining can cause damage. This paper quantifies the effects of such grouting on a typical precast lining.

"The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. Heavy minerals have been mined from the sands of the United States’ Atlantic Coastal Plain since the early part of the twentieth century. Production of ilmenite from beach sands near Mineral City (Ponte Vedra), Florida, began in 1916. The first reported large-scale recovery of zircon in Florida was reported from this deposit in 1922 and of rutile in 1925. These operations ceased in 1929. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site. In 1942 heavy-mineral operations were established on 202 hectares of land situated in Duval County, Florida. The location is about 16 kilometers east of the center of Jacksonville, Florida, in an area known as Arlington. This operation demonstrated that low-grade sand containing only 2 to 3 percent titanium minerals could be concentrated economically with the Humphreys spiral and that the oxides could be separated from the heavy silicates by electrostatic methods. Much of this area is now covered by a large mall and is a major retail- commercial center. Between 1958 and 1964 the Skinner tract, a deposit about 4 kilometers south of the above deposit, was mined. Today the area of this deposit is known as Deerwood, a gated country club community on the southside of Jacksonville. Further inland, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. has been mining heavy minerals from a physiographic feature known as Trail Ridge since 1948, and a deposit near Green Cove Springs, Florida has been in production since 1972. Since the start of heavy-mineral mining in the southeastern United States, nine heavy-mineral ore bodies either have been or are being exploited in Florida and Georgia. Other deposits either have been lost to mining or are yet to be mined. These deposits have different origins. Some formed along shorelines at the heights of marine transgressions while others formed on regressional beach ridge plains during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions. These different origins are reflected in the chemical and physical characteristics of the deposits. Ilmenite in older, more western deposits has a higher TiO2 content than ilmenite in younger, more eastern deposits. TiO2 content does not very with north-south direction. Garnet and epidote are absent or rare in the older Trail Ridge deposits, but progressively become common in the younger Duval Upland, Crestal Pamlico, and Holocene deposits. Grain size is coarsest for Trail Ridge sediments and finest for sediments in Duval Upland and Crestal Pamlico deposits. The average grain size for Holocene deposits is intermediate between Trail Ridge and Duval Upland deposits. The two models for the origin of the heavy-mineral deposits – deposits formed at the height of major marine transgression; and deposits formed during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions that occur during a general marine regression; - are consistent with known sedimentological data and depositional trends.

A proper management system of coal mine methane gas associated with underground mining activities is essential for the mine safety due to its nature of explosion. Optimum design of the mine ventilation and gas drainage need accurate prediction of gas flow rate emitted by mining activities. Permeability to gas, which is affected by stress conditions of surrounding rock mass, governs the emission rate of the gases. JCOAL has developed a three dimensional FEM simulation program named Mine Gas Flow 3D (MGF-3D). MGF-3D is designed to predict the volume of methane gas emitted from surrounding coal and rock seams based on stress distribution and permeability change which are determined by 3D stress analysis. In MGF-3D, stress change and/or expansion of fractured zone affected by mining is calculated at the first and then gas emission into roadways and longwall panels under the determined stress conditions is calculated using Darcy’s law. MGF-3D also can set up a number of pre-drainage holes and estimate drainage gas volume from each hole. This function makes MGF-3D remarkable program. These simulations for gas emission can contribute to mine gas utilization plan. Comparison between actual measurement of gas emission in the underground mine and simulation results has been performed and availability for the mine safety and problems with MGF-3D are discussed in this report.

Mill tailings, containing iron sulphides in particular, pose an environmental concern since they constitute a potential source of acid mine drainage which can damage vegetation, harm soil and living organisms, and contaminate groundwaters. Proper disposal of acid generating tailings is therefore an important issue that must be addressed and resolved in a satisfactory manner. Placer Dome Canada operates a 4000 t/d gold cyanidation facility at Musselwhite mine, in northwestern Ontario, where the mill tailings have been classified as acid generating. This study was conducted to explore the effectiveness of froth flotation in removing the sulphide minerals from these tailings and producing a low-sulphur, non-acid generating material that could serve as a capping material for previously deposited tailings. Laboratory semi-batch flotation tests were carried out in accordance with an experimental design procedure, and a computer simulation program was developed to facilitate the evaluation of flotation performance. In this investigation, pH, collector concentration, and airflow rate were considered as the relevant flotation variables, and their effects were examined both experimentally and by simulation. Results have demonstrated that flotation can successfully desulphurize the Musselwhite mine tailings and render them non-acid generating.

"Hydrothermal systems are a major component of the processes that shape the composition and structure of the ocean crust, providing a major pathway for the exchange of heat and elements between the Earth’s crust and oceans, and a locus for prolific biological activity on the seafloor and underlying crust. On the other hand, the structure and composition of hydrothermal systems are the result of complex interactions between heat sources, fluids, wall rocks, tectonic controls and even biological processes.Ultraslow spreading ridges, including the Southwest Indian Ridge and the Gakkel Ridge, are most remarkable end member in plate-boundary structures (Dick et al., 2003), featured with extensive tectonic amagmatic spreading and frequent exposure of peridotite and gabbro. With intensive surveys during the last decades, it was suggested that ultraslow ridges are several times more effective than faster-spreading ridges in sustaining hydrothermal activity. This increased longevity can be attributed to deep mining of heat and even exothermic serpentinisation (Baker et al., 2004).Distinct from faster spreading ridges, one characteristics of hydrothermal mineralization on seafloor in ultraslow spreading ridges, including the active Dragon Flag hydrothermal field at 49.6 degree on the Southwest Indian Ridge, is the abundant and pervasive distribution of lower temperature minerals (such as Fe-silica or silica, Mn (Fe) oxides, sepiolite, pyrite, marcasite, etc.) in the hydrothermal fields. Structures formed by lower temperature activity in active and dead hydrothermal fields can also be identified. High temperature minerals such as chalcopyrite are rare or very limited in hydrothermal chimneys at ultraslow spreading ridges. The distribution of diverse low temperature hydrothermal activity is consistence with the deep heating mechanisms and hydrothermal circulations in the complex framework of ultraslow spreading tectonics. On the other hand, deeper and more extensive mineralization at certain locations along the ultraslow spreading ridges can be reasonably presumed."

This Bureau of Mines study identifies and examines the costs of Federal, State, and local environmental protection controls on domestic phosphate rock mining, The costs include the expenditures needed to comply with government regulations and the effects that these expenditures and regulations have on supply. The study analyzes costs of environmental impact assessments, air and water quality standards, reclamation laws, potential solid waste controls, and local government restrictions. In addition, an industry survey and the Bureau's Minerals Availability System (MAS) are used to evaluate land management policies that restrict access to phosphate resources, Conclusions drawn from these analyses confirm that (1) domestic phosphate mining has incurred substantial control costs and may be subject to significant new regulatory costs in the next several years, (2) certain environmental controls can discourage mining investment, (3) environmental policies governing land-use controls affect the disposition of sizable phosphate resources, and are key determinants in the development of those resources on the Federal do- main, and (4) environmental costs could diminish the competitiveness of domestic producers.

Fine phosphate feed is considered to be slime and normally disposed of as a discard in settling ponds or dumped as landfill. The purpose of this research was to establish whether commercially acceptable qualities and yields could be obtained from this material using dry separation methods. The results obtained from the electrostatic separation of <105 µm phosphate ore are presented. An existing separator was upgraded in order to improve on product and flotation concentrate recovery, to test different mineral, and to reduce particle residence time between the charging chamber and the separating zone of the separator. The operating conditions were varied according to the charges imparted to the particles in the electric field, and according to other device parameters. Parameters such as splitter position, charge reversal, rotation speed, charging voltage and separating voltage. The <105 µm phosphate feed was concentrated under both triboelectrification and inductive charging. The use of inductive charging and charge reversal resulted in a significant increase in grade for <105 µm phosphate feed, with the P205 grade increasing from about 12 per cent to 20.50 per cent, and a recovery of 26.30 per cent under a single stage of separation. It was found that better separation was achieved at rotation speed of 6000 r/min, -8 kV charging voltage, and 25 kV separating voltage.

"When hard times strike in the mining cycle, sites tighten their belts and focus on lowering their unit costs. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. Faced with these requirements, site personnel must turn to areas where they can focus their effort for maximum return. For many sites, both in Canada and overseas, focusing on improving flotation cell maintenance is one of the areas where gains can be made for minimum outlay. Due to resource limitations and/or lack of equipment understanding, maintenance on many sites is only conducted on a reactive basis, once equipment fails. This paper will promote the idea that mineral processors should become more familiar with their equipment so they can ensure that the plant’s ability to produce is not compromised. By better understanding the flotation equipment and ensuring the critical components are maintained, it should be possible to unlock value in an operation. Flotation equipment inspections will be discussed in detail, including key items to look for during these inspections. Potential approaches for predicting wear and change-out time for flotation equipment components will be also demonstrated. An example of one approach used at a South African nickel site will be given.INTRODUCTIONWith metal prices decreasing and operating costs rising, concentrator operators are looking for ways to improve their bottom line. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. To meet the expectation of shareholders, mineral processors must turn to areas where they can get the best return for their efforts. One area where there is a large opportunity for improvement is in the maintenance of flotation equipment.On many mine sites, both domestically and around the world, it is quite common to see the philosophy applied of repairing equipment only once it has failed. Though some sites have advanced enterprise management systems and monitoring programs, in the authors’ experience, the decision on flotation equipment maintenance is rarely made on a proactive basis. Two common trends that are evident in the mining industry are that operations are under pressure to keep the plant producing, and maintenance managers generally have very strict budget targets to meet. In addition to these factors, few sites have a good understanding of the financial implications of running with worn or broken flotation equipment. Knights, Jullian and Jofre (2006) summarize this situation well, stating that the lack of correlation between some commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers can lead to maintenance being seen only as a cost center (that needs to be reduced) rather than a tool for productivity improvement."

Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML) has constructed and largely completed the commissioning of an alluvial gold dredge designed to recover gold from a low grade gold deposit in the Grey River Valley, New Zealand. The most important resource that GRGML has are the people who are employed by the organisation. The low grade of the deposit necessitates the requirement to operate the dredge at optimum efficiency, which in turn requires the work force to be of high calibre and continually motivated. The primary prerequisite for employment at GRGML is for employees to be receptive to new ideas and have the adaptability to develop new skills and apply those skills to the changing demands of the workplace. &nbsp; A continually changing organisational structure is utilised to meet the needs of a changing work environment. The adoption of an innovative site employment agreement allowing for flexible working hours has aided the achievement of good employee productivity and attendance. &nbsp; Employees gain a higher quality of life by working a roster pattern involving twelve hour shifts and a four day on, four day off pattern. &nbsp; Employees and management are communicating very well and working together to achieve organisational goals which will ultimately benefit the employees, the shareholders, the local community and the mining industry generally.
