Closed form solutions assume opening shape to be circular to simplify the calculation of the ground response curve for the design of underground openings. However, in mining and civil engineering works, non-circular openings are commonly excavated. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the ground response curve for such openings. In this respect, a simple model for circular, arch and rectangular shape underground openings subject to a hydrostatic stress field is the aim of this study. A comprehensive numerical modelling, using the finite difference method, based on numerical modelling code FLAC version 4.0, was carried out. In addition to shape of an opening, the effect of rock mass strength, opening size, in situ stress on strain (tunnel deformation to tunnel radius) of the opening in response to applied support pressures was investigated parametrically by developing models for each specific condition. The strain results for each excavation shape obtained from this large number of models against the normalized strength of rock mass and internal support pressure with in situ stress magnitude were evaluated by multiple regression analysis. As a result, a model that was well correlated to data was developed for an overall estimate of the ground response curve depending on relevant effecting parameters. The regression coefficients of the model were given for estimating both roof and sidewall response curve of each excavation shape. The model was verified by statistical tests and by an analytical solution. Diagrams were also established to highlight the influence of relevant parameters and to estimate the support pressure for a stable opening staying within the acceptable limits of strain. Strains occurring in a rectangular opening are found to be larger than those in the arch and circular openings for the other fixed parameters. The Bahamian economy weathered the worldwide recession of the last few years better than most developing countries. This was mainly owing to the ties between the tourist industry of the Bahamas and the U.S. economy. The mineral industry played a minor role in the country's economy. The chief mineral exports included an increasing amount of petroleum products horn the country?s 500,000-barrel-per-day refinery, steel pipe, salt, and aragonite. A 60,001)-barrel-per-day desulfurization facility was completed by Bahamas Oil Refinery Co. (BORCO) in Freeport. The project included vacuum gas oil desulfurization, hydrogen and sulfur recovery, steam generation, water desalinization, and offsite facilities.

About two-thirds of the manufactured gas supplied to the public by the gas plants in the Illinois district is cnrbureted water gas. The leading generator fuel is coke, ma.de in by-product c.oke ovens or in retorts, chiefly from eastern gas coals. During the fall and winter of 1917-18, when the demand for coke by war industries and the restrictions of the Fuel Administration in connection with the transportation of coke from eastern States made it almost impossible for many gas companies to obtain their coke requireml'nts, several water-gas plants had to use bituminous coal as generator fud. Many operating difficulties were encountered, some of which were solved more or less satisfactorily in different plants. A number of plants attacked the problem rather blindly because facilities for making tests were lacking and because technical men were too busy with labor and supply problems to study thoroughly the conditions involved or to ascertain what other plants had done with this fuel. It was therefore with the hope of assisting the gas industry during this critical period, and of promoting the use of Central District coals for gas making, that the Illinois Mining Investigations, a joint agency of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Geological Survey Division undertook the, tests discussed in this paper. • This report was compiled under the auspices of a technical committee appointed by Gov. Frank 0. Lowden to promote the use of Central District coals in gas manufacture as a war measure. This committee included the following representatives of the various agencies concerned: U. S. "Geological exploration involves the collection and analysis of a wide variety of information. A basic problem in interpretation is to determine the interrelationship s of the different data. A number of statistical methods can be applied to this problem, provided that subsets of data can be selected.We have recently developed a set of interactive computer programs which provide the cap ability to quickly examine a large set of data, and may be used by people with little previous computer experience. There are two main stages in using this system. First is selection of subsets of data , by applying various tests on the values of given items. This includes matching specific entries in descriptive fields, and minimum - maximum tests on numeric fields. The second stage is basic statistical analysis and data display , including histograms, 2-D scalier plots, probability (cumulative frequency) plots, and correlation matrices. All output can be viewed on a computer terminal, and important parameters changed to produce the most effective display for use in interpretation.This system has been applied to a number of different exploration problems. An example was the determination of the nature and extent of mineralization of a gold prospect in the Queen Charlotte Islands, from drill-hole data. With the aid of the computer programs , a mineralized zone was defined, and locations for further exploration identified."

Bench scale, laboratory batch attrition grinding tests were made of a coarse commercial kaolin in a stainless steel, 5-inch-diameter attrition grinding machine to study the effect of a number of basic operating variables on particle size reduction and electric energy consumption. The results of the investigation showed that the more important operating variables influencing the efficiency of kaolin comminution and energy consumption requirements were type, size, and shape of grinding media, grinding media to clay weight ratio, peripheral rotor speed, clay slip pulp density, degree of pulp dispersion, and the angular arrangement of the rotor and stator bars. The tests also indicated that variables having less influence on grinding efficiency and energy consumption were pulp temperature, design of rotor cage, rotor clearance, rotor-stator bar interval, addition agents, pulp level, degree of pulp aeration, and chamber liners. The research showed that grinding media had the greatest influence on abrasion of machine parts and that spherical-shaped grinding media were superior to sharp angular or long bladed media with respect to media degradation, machine abrasion as well as grinding efficiency.

The presence of dust and fume suspended in the freeboard region is a common feature of the operation of direct current (DC) plasma smelting furnaces. This occurs primarily as a result of the use of fine feed materials together with the open-arc, open-bath operation of such smelters, and is exacerbated by the high velocities and turbulent mixing of the gas in the vicinity of the arc jet. Dust and fume losses into the furnace off-gas system can be significant in some cases and may have economic, operational, and environmental impacts on the process. A computational modelling study is presented in which the concentration of dust material was considered as a continuous field subject to a governing partial differential equation. Settling behaviour was calculated as a function of particle size, local gas/plasma temperature, and other physical properties. Development of the coupling between the concentration field and a magnetohydrodynamic description of the arc is shown, and the resulting models were used to compute various aspects of the behaviour of the concentration field in the arc region for a variety of furnace conditions. Time-averaged as well as transient models of the arc were used to generate the results presented. Qualitative case studies produced several practical suggestions for furnace operation, including increased dust capture by the bath when feed ports are located closer to the electrode, and the possible effects of feed segregation in the furnace freeboard based on dust particle size and density.

Sublevel stoping (SLS) is one of the oldest and most used methods for underground mining. It relies heavily on the use of drilling and blasting techniques to remove the rock, and gravity to transport the broken rock to drawpoints located at the base of the stope, with LHDs to transport material from the drawpoints. Current SLS operations are based on the assumption of stable geometry of the stope. Thus, the stope design includes the definition of the geometry according to the orebody shape and geomechanical constraints to avoid instability, which may cause excessive dilution. Under some circumstances, dilution could enter the stope due to geotechnical instability, especially when large stope geometries are used. A review of current design and planning practices for large SLS operations indicates that no consideration is given to the material flow and the mixing that occurs after blasting. Material flow could have a large impacton the mixing of ore when grades are heterogeneous in the stope. In this paper, we discuss the influence of gravity flow on the design and planning of large sublevel stopes with and without vertical dilution, based on laboratory experiments. The outcomes of this investigation are used todevelop guidelines towards the design and planning of large SLS mines, which would complement the currently used geotechnical considerations.

In some respects, forward combustion (alias: fie-flooding, underground combustion, in-situ combustion, dry combustion) is an efficient oil recovery method. For example, its displacement efficiency (as much as 95 percent in reservoirs with high porosity and high oil saturation) is good. In its use of heat, however, forward combustion is grossly inefficient. Most of the heat generated during forward combustion is wasted. About one-fifth of the heat is picked up by the incoming air and re-used (regenerated); the remainder is left behind the combustion zone and ultimately is lost. Compressed air is expensive, and heat generated from compressed air via underground combustion is too valuable to be thrown away. Improvement is needed. Since the early 1950's, improvements in forward combustion by addition of water injection have been discussed, particularly in the patent literature, with increasing frequency.'-'' These concepts are based on the fact that relatively inexpensive water can be used to pick up much of the heat that is ordinarily wasted during forward combustion, and transport it forward to a more useful place, thereby reducing the amount of air required to move a heat front through the reservoir. Several approaches have been proposed. Merriam and Squires1 taught that a combustible (fuel) gas should be injected along with the air and water. This, however, would give at least a tendency toward reverse combustion instead of forward combustion, and would reduce the velocity of the heat bank, defeating the primary purpose of the water injection. Pelzer2 described primarily a batchwise method of forward combustion and water flooding. He advocated burning part way through a reservoir with forward combustion, then switching from air to water injection alone to push the heat toward the producing wells. Though possible, this method has serious disadvantages, the major one being that, by the time water injection is started, much of the heat has been irretrievably lost to the overlying and underlying formations. We have described what is considered a practical Combination Of Forward Combustion And Water-flooding (COFCAW).3,4 Air and water are injected simultaneously (or alternately) after a small heat bank has been formed by forward combustion. Some of the injected fluid fills up the region behind the heat bank; the rest enters the heat bank. Upon encountering heated rock, the water is converted into steam, which then flows ahead of the combustion zone and displaces much of the oil in place. Only enough air is injected to provide heat for vaporization of the water and to compensate for reservoir heat losses. Since the size of the heat bank is minimized, heat losses also are minimized. Because of more efficient oil displacement ahead of the combustion zone, fuel consumption is reduced. "Studies on the performance of Falcon batch type concentrators treating ultrafine tantalum at Tanco have revealed that very fine heavy minerals are concentrated within certain areas of the concentrate bed. This information led to the design of a bowl which would allow entrapped lighter low grade particles to escape while providing more space for heavier particles to be recovered in the bed.Numerous tests were then completed with a modified batch-type and non-fluidized Falcon bowl in which the diameter of the discharge lip was adjusted downward manually in steps. This allowed for the gradual building of a higher grade concentrate bed.This work ultimately led to the design of a new Falcon with an automated continuously variable lip. In April 2005, Tanco commissioned the first Falcon UF600.This paper will discuss laboratory scale results and also plant performance of the Falcon’s UF technology.INTRODUCTIONTantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, also known as Tanco, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cabot Corporation based in Boston, Mass. Operating since 1969, the underground highly mechanized room and pillar operation produces tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals and is located a 2 hour drive east-northeast of Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada.At Tanco, tantalum is recovered using conventional gravity concentration, enhanced gravity concentration and flotation. This paper will discuss how the need for improved equipment to treat very fine tantalum particles was filled by a machine which was modified to the point of creating a completely new technology.In November 2003, Tanco began the investigation for the potential use of a high g-force smooth walled concentrator for treating ultra fine tantalum produced by its flotation circuit. Until then, the tantalum flotation concentrate had been treated by a circuit which consisted of a Mozley Multi-Gravity Separator 902 (MGS), a Mozley MGS 900 and a Bartles cross belt concentrator. Through QemScan analysis, it was found that the majority of the losses from this circuit were of an extremely fine nature which exceeded the recovery limits of equipment on hand. Mean particle size of the tantalum losses was less than 10 µm."

The first test pile for the carrier pier and south wharf at NAVSTA Puget Sound was driven on December 27, 1989, and the final pile was tested on February 26, 1990. Implementation and modification of the test pile program were done by the owners (WESTDIV and ROICC-Everett), the engineers (ABAM and Hart Crowser), and the contractor and his subcontractor (General Manson Joint Venture and GRL). The site is located as shown on Figure 1. SUMMARY OF THE SOIL CONDITIONS A soil profile along the pier is shown as Figure 2. The soil units can be generalized as follows: ? Upper Silts - Fill, sandy silt, and clayey silt extending from the mudline to an elevation of about -80 feet; ? Intermediate Sand - A medium dense to very dense silty sand unit which is about 30 feet thick near the shore, but thins and disappears offshore; ? Lower Silts - Sandy silts and clayey silts in a medium stiff to stiff condition; ? Deep Sand - A very dense overconsolidated sandy soil encountered at an elevation of about -145 feet.

STATISTICAL data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines and to their mills, and/or processing plants are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1960. The information pertains to metal mines, as well as ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries and reduction plants, and their auxiliary works. These data are voluntarily submitted annually to the Bureau of Mines by the operators, and contribute greatly toward the promotion of safety in the mineral industries. The data presented are classified according to the principal mineral produced and include information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, uranium-vanadium and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodities is shown in table 19, page 41. The data also relate to workers engaged in production, exploration, development, construction, and maintenance and repair work, as well as supervisory personnel and office- workers at the mine or plant site. The mechanized mining cycle using loaders and shuttle cars had its peak in terms of usage in the mining industry during 1950 through 1960. In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

"SynopsisThe purpose of this paper is to introduce an innovative approach to risk management in surface mining operations, namely, positive risk. Traditionally, risk management focused on mitigating losses (negative). Positive risk, on the contrary, reverses the approach and focuses on exploiting a project’s inherent benefits (positive).The inability to accurately determine project objectives during the project planning phase and the failure to achieve those objectives during the execution phase is a major problem for any project management in the mining environment.The advance of computer aided design models for mine planning enables mining engineers to examine various options within a very short time. Employing positive risk management combined with drivers-based risk management when evaluating these options provides an ideal opportunity to investigate areas for improving the mining project’s profits. Furthermore, harnessing positive risk returns during the planning phase contributes immensely to the successful achievement of project objectives.Mining has inherent business risks, which can appear overwhelming when considering the risks associated with a mining project schedule, cost, and safety or resources, etc. The question is – how to manage risks in a surface mining environment, and what process methodologies, work methods, processes, and standards should be used when considering the surface mining risks. Applying the principles of positive risk management to manage surface mining risks is not only relevant, but definitely beneficial to mining projects and to the mining industry as a whole.It would be beneficial for risk managers and risk professionals to understand the roles of positive risk ‘drivers’, also known as ‘propitious attractors’. Identifying, analysing, estimating, and understanding the propitious attractors, their behaviour and their influence on project risk events helps considerably during the planning and execution phases. The theoretical and practical knowledge of both sides of the risk – the downside risk (negative risk) and upside risk (positive risk) – can add substantial value to any organization when downside risk is adequately mitigated and upside risk is beneficially exploited."

Since mining operations began in 1900, Government geologists and mining men have periodically recorded the presence of the minerals of mercury and antimony in the extensive gold placer deposits near Flat in the Iditarod district of the Yukon River region, Alaska. No serious effort was made to recover the cinnabar contained in the gold placer gravels, and there is no evidence that veins of cinnabar and stibnite exposed in the placer operations (as reported by the Geological Survey) were ever explored or developed. A large monzonitic intrusive, which is the dominant geologic feature of the immediate area, is believed to be the lode source of the valuable minerals in the placer deposits. In contact with the monzonite are argillite and quartzite, metamorphic products from the Cretaceous shales and sandstones.

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland û Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground subsection of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes operational. Support of the site's system continues from head office which is continually involved in development of SUMPS and issuing revision updates to sites. The users, as well as programmers, were mostly geologists and mining engineers. This helped to ensure rapid, successful implementation. The broad approach of this system was to use interactively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of the user mining engineers and geologists with the data manipulation abilities of the computer. It is an integrated system which covers geological exploration, deposit modelling, mine planning and production scheduling. An important feature of the system is that the user has full interactive control over each function through a graphics terminal where applicable.

Stack Sizers are currently screening ferrous and non-ferrous metal ores, mineral sands, silica sand, kaolin clay, feldspar, garnet, phosphate, aluminum dross, potash, coal, tantalum, spodumene, niobium, and other rare earth mineral ores.INTRODUCTIONDerrick engineers have long understood and demonstrated the importance of screen width in coupling both high capacity and high separation efficiency for fine wet sizing applications. As opposed to fine dry sizing, where the length of the screening machine is critical for high separation efficiency, introducing slurry feed to screens in a thin and even layer at minimal velocities across wider screen surfaces allows for high capacities and efficiencies, with maximum screen cloth life. This is due primarily to the combination of free liquid and high frequency vibration of the Derrick motors, which allow fine undersize material to pass through the screen apertures. Lacking either of these factors would be extremely detrimental to the screening process. Without the high frequency vibration of the motor, the screen is essentially a low efficiency sieve bend. Without the free liquid to carry fines through the screen openings, the screen is for all intents and purposes a glorified conveyor or dewatering unit, as little or no sizing takes place once the screen is devoid of free liquid. For optimal screening results, Derrick recommends feeding slurry to a screen at approximately 20% solids by volume. Figure 1 shows the Stack Sizer design concept. Note that a single feed point is used to evenly distribute the flow to the five separate feed points."

Most of us are aware of the ever increasing use of underground space. At the Advisory Conference on tunneling in Washington, D. C. in June of 1970, the demand for construction oriented tunneling during the 1970s was estimated at some 21,000 Km of length with an excavation volume of 675 million cubic meters. Of this total, 11 million cubic meters were forecast for underground parking. Though this is a small portion of the total, it is significant to note it represents a 280% increase over the previous decade. Other areas of unusual increase were railroad tunnels, 150%, and rapid transit tunnels, 160% (1). Faced with this increasing demand, the need for improved excavating efficiency is obvious. Great strides have been made. In Japan, for example, several new long tunnels have been driven parallel to old existing ones at costs as much as 50; under those of the original tunnels (1). This is an impressive achievement. I am certain, however, that we would all agree that even greater improvement is required. Great emphasis is being placed upon sophisticated systems which include among others, mechanical borers, thermal fracturing, and various methods of rock weakening and softening. However, in hard rock excavation the fact remains that the drill-blast method continues to be the most widely used system. Undoubtedly it will continue to be one of the most important techniques in the forseeable future.
