Since prehistoric times, gold has been sought for its beauty and its unusual physical and chemical properties. Early in the dawn of civilization it became the ultimate unit of value, and for at least 6000 years it has been used to barter for other commodities. It has been prospected for, treasured and made into works of art and personal adornment. From time to time, it has even been the object of conquest. Because of its predominant role as a basis for money in recent centuries, economists have come to think of gold solely in these terms. Gold, however, has physical and chemical properties that make it one of the most useful metals in the modern world. It is the most ductile metal known. An ounce of it can be drawn into a continuous wire over 35 miles long. It is also so malleable that an ounce of it can be beaten into films 0.00001 in. thick covering 68 sq ft of surface. It has a density of 19.3 and is so heavy that 1 cu ft of it weighs more than half a ton. Gold is nonmagnetic and has a high electric conductivity that is only slightly less than that of silver and copper. Gold is so inert to all the chemicals found in nature that gold coins and jewelry buried beneath the soil or at the bottom of the sea for thousands of years appear to be as bright and perfect as when they were first immersed. Finally, gold has an extremely high reflectivity of both light and infrared rays.

Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. Mintek has been involved in the development of bioleach technology for many years, initially for refractory gold extraction, and more recently also for base metals extraction. Mintek, in collaboration with its Australian technology partner (BacTech), is the technology provider for the Beaconsfield refractory gold bioleach plant. At present Mintek, BacTech and Peñoles are constructing a demonstration bioleach plant for copper-zinc concentrate treatment. Bioleach liquors produced in all applications have to be neutralized. In the copper-zinc case, neutralization is required for bleeding iron from the circuit and for adjusting the pH value ahead of solvent extraction. In the refractory gold bioleach circuit, neutralization is required for producing a stable iron-arsenic residue. Some of the challenges encountered in each of these neutralization applications are discussed, and examples of results obtained are presented.

INTRODUCTION Mica Dam is located on the Columbia River just downstream of the "big bend" of the Columbia, where it leaves the Rocky Mountain Trench and begins to flow southwards, approximately 85 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. (Fig.l). The dam was built as one of three Columbia River Treaty dams in British Columbia which regulate the flow of the river and provide flood control downstream in Washington and Oregon. In addition, the three Canadian dams make possible greatly increased power generation at existing power plants in the United States and further development along the Columbia and its tributaries in British Columbia. History Mica Dam, constructed during the period 1967 to 1973, is a zoned earthfill embankment 650 feet high, which has 12,000,000 acre feet of live storage and an available head of 550 feet. Power intakes which would serve either a six-unit surface or underground plant were incorporated into the design and construction of the right abutment of the dam (Fig. 2). Prior to 1971 alternative 2500 MW capacity surface and underground powerplant arrangements were studied. Cost estimates for the two alternatives were the same within the limits of estimating procedures. However, it was believed there was a certain continuing risk in locating a surface plant at the toe of a steep canyon wall. Although only used in a few U.S. longwall mines, bleeder-less ventilation systems can be an effective spontaneous combustion control method in mines having a demonstrated history of spontaneous combustion. To provide insights for the optimization of bleederless ventilation systems for U.S. underground coal mines, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to model the spontaneous heating in longwall gob areas using a bleederless ventilation system. A single longwall panel with a bleederless ventilation system was simulated, and typical longwall mine ventilation data were used in the simulations. The permeability and porosity profiles for the longwall gob were estimated using a geotechnical model and were used as inputs for the CFD modeling. The effects of gob permeability and resistance of the collapsed entries on the spontaneous heating were studied. The effectiveness of using nitrogen injection to prevent spontaneous heating in the gob was also examined.1

Traditionally, bottle roll tests have been used to optimize the extraction process for best gold extraction and recovery. Such tests typically involve exposing the ore to defined reagent concentrations (lime, cyanide and sufficient oxygen) and balance the gold input with recoveries and losses. With mounting pressures to accommodate sustainability issues during development work, it became apparent that much more information would be required on the interactions and kinetic behaviour of solid and solution species during the entire leach process. This information is vital to enable proactive management of critical issues such as cyanide, arsenic, water and tailings management. Inadequate management of these aspects has led to temporary closures and, in cases of non-compliance, to the dynamically changing regulations. MINTEK?s advanced leach facility (ALF) is being developed with the aim of bridging the knowledge gap between the gold leach process and the predictable environmental impacts upon discharge. The facility aims to monitor all parameters of relevance such as pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, metals, cyanide species, and viscosity during the entire process to enable more informed decisions on practical interventions. The presented set of data reflects first experiences gained from processing a refractory gold ore concentrate. Attempts at optimizing the process were limited due to the developmental nature of the work. Data relating to leaches with differing preoxidation conditions and cyanide staging is presented.

The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.

The paper presents the foundation design and construction of a landmark urban redevelopment scheme in central London, UK. The scheme comprises the new Tottenham Court Road Underground station, Crossrail interchange box and associated over-site commercial development. The paper focuses on the design, procurement and construction of large diameter bored piles, up to 68m in depth, which form the foundation support system for the over-site commercial development at Denmark Place. The congestion below ground required an intricate foundation design solution which has been a catalyst for developing innovative load transfer arrangements and has resulted in the advancement of pile construction technology in the UK. The foundation system was also designed to cater for the construction of two significant elements of proposed below ground infrastructure. Selected large diameter piles have been constructed within 1.1m of live underground railway tunnels. An innovative D-shaped pile was constructed in a zone subject to particular spatial constraints. The proposed Crossrail tunnels will be bored within 1m of selected over-site development piles. In addition, a 30m deep excavation forming a new escalator box will be constructed in direct contact with the over-site development piles. The stakeholder engagement process is described together with the foundation design development and buildability assessment. The benefits from early collaboration between the designers and specialist contractors are highlighted. From an analytical design perspective, the entire foundation construction sequence was modelled in detail in order to assess the soil structure interaction and any potential adverse effects on existing elements of underground infrastructure. The results from the three dimensional numerical modelling simulation are compared with field monitoring data.

It is known that Mg can act as a catalyst/solvent in the high pressure high temperature diamond synthesis. However, above pressure levels of the order of 7 GPa, and temperatures from 1700 ? 1800oC, it was not possible yet to use Mg for the industrial production of diamond. A possible alternative is the use of MgNi based alloys. However, owing to the great Mg reactivity, it was consider, so far, a difficult task to deal with such alloys. The present work presents successful results regarding the production of MgNi alloys, with different composition, at high pressure conditions. The behavior of the alloys and their microstructural characterization is analyzed.

Models of ground surface elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, roughness, deformation, as well as other features are gathered together in the term Digital Terrain Model (DTM). DTMs can be generated from a wide range of technologies such as ground surveying, aerial and satellite imagery, including both active and passive sensors. Some elevation derived parameters, such as roughness and slope, can be measured directly using innovative active sensor technology and smart processing, rather than via traditional processing of elevation information. Such models are used as part of a visual interpretation process, and increasingly for computer-assisted analysis using visualisation technology. There is an ever-increasing demand for DTM information to be used in the mineral exploration and mining industry, and consistent pressure from industry to develop models of higher spatial resolution, higher accuracy, and better overall reliability, regardless of the world-wide location of interest. This presentation will survey the range of techniques available for DTM generation, including active (LIDAR, SAR interferometry and differential interferometry) and passive (optical or SAR stereo) methods, as well as interpolation methods (contour or structure interpolation), and the economic placement of these various techniques in the local and regional context. The research issue oftrue-ground elevation models and slopes is also addressed, using LIDAR and SAR polarimetry as signpost technologies. Particular emphasis will be given to the strengths and limitations of new data sources that will, over the next few years, make the acquisition of elevation models of remote regions of the world inexpensive and relatively accurate.

The Weda Bay nickel and cobalt laterite deposits on Halmahera Island, Republic of Indonesia were first drilled in May 1996 by Strand Minerals Pte Ltd (Strand). Subsequent exploration has delineated four large laterite provinces, parts of which have been diamond drilled to outline an indicated nickel resource of 59.9 Mt of 1.51 per cent Ni and 0.09 per cent Co within a total indicated and inferred resource of 117 Mt of 1.36 per cent Ni and 0.12 per cent Co. The project is held as a Seventh Generation Contract of Work (COW) by PT Weda Bay Nickel, which is jointly owned by Strand (90 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (ten per cent). Strand is a wholly owned subsidiary of Weda Bay Minerals Inc, a company listed on the Toronto and Alberta Stock Exchanges in Canada. Halmahera is located in the north-eastern part of the Indonesian archipelago at the convergent junction of three major plates and is a region of considerable tectonic and geological complexity. The western arms of Halmahera form a classic volcanic island arc while the central region and eastern arms contain ophiolite complexes and interlayered sediments. The extensive areas of laterite discovered at Weda Bay have developed over serpentinised harzburgites and dunites of pre-Cretaceous age. Weathering of these rocks has produced laterite profiles that are enriched in nickel and cobalt. There are three economically mineralised laterite types, namely limonites, ferruginous saprolites and saprolites and all are amenable to rapid pressure acid leaching with recoveries of 98 per cent nickel and 94 per cent cobalt in less than 20 minutes.

In the field of mineral processing, although many operations are applied to suspensions of ore particles in fluids, there is a lack of fundamental knowledge relative to the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. Previously proposed equations, based on the Ostwald-de Waele (power-law) model for non-Newtonian fluids, are exam ined in the turbulent flow region relative to a number of pertinent variables and their effects on the movement of immersed bodies. As more knowledge is acquired in regard to the effects of suspension variables on the rheological properties, useful relationships may be proposed to allow predictions of conditions to achieve optimum results for engineering purposes. In the field of minerals processing, many operations are applied to suspensions of ore particles in fluids. The differential movement of solids of various sizes and densities in suspensions is of utmost importance to gravity concentration, wet classification, flotation, hydrometallurgy, and pipeline transport of solids. The subject is also of importance to other branches of engineering; for example, those involved with soil mechanics, ceramic slips, and oil-well drilling fluids. There is a lack of fundamental knowledge relative to the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. The problems encountered in the direct application of the well-known Stokes and Newton's Laws to non-Newtonian systems have been examined in a previous paper.' Equations were proposed based on the Ostwald-de Waele (power-law) model for non-Newtonian fluids. This present paper examines these equations in the turbulent flow region relative to a number of pertinent variables and their effects on the movement of immersed bodies. It is thought that, as more knowledge is acquired as to the effects of suspension variables on the rheological properties, useful relationships may be proposed to allow prediction of conditions to achieve optimum results for engineering purposes. The purpose of this paper is to make an initial assessment of the nature and magnitude of pertinent suspension variables. In order to avoid too voluminous a document, the examination of kinetics and mechanisms will be omitted at this time. THEORY A Newtonian fluid is defined as a fluid in which the stress is proportional to the rate of strain, 2 i.e.: H = viscosity; see Table I. for list of symbols The following equations are conventionally used to assess the motion of spherical particles moving under laminar and turbulent flow conditions through Newtonian fluids: When these relationships are applied in practice to suspensions, the liquid density is substituted by a composite suspension density, and viscosity is usually taken as that of the suspending liquid or an approximated "apparent viscosity." However, suspensions are non-Newtonian in character3 and thus, more than one viscosity parameter is required to describe their behavior. This paper presents the experiences and views of women involved in the mining industry as determined from a questionnaire that was circulated across the Canadian mining industry. Globally, there have been significant studies done to understand the historic and global variety of women?s participation in this industry1. The reason for focusing on women?s experiences here in Canada is because women?s percentage representation at 14.4% in the mineral industry workforce falls below the overall labour force average of 47.4%2. Notably, a recent article in the Globe and Mail newspaper points out that adequate representation of women in leading of organizations is more of a matter of competitiveness and innovation rather than purely a ?women?s issue?3. This paper will provide some insight into the reasons why women join and stay in the mining industry and shed some light into the reasons for the overall low representation in this sector. The authors believe, as stated in a study from the London Business School, that a gender-balanced workforce is one way of providing the best results in areas that drive innovation4. Women represent a key stakeholder group that can help enhance the mining industry?s sustainability through innovation. The women who responded to the questionnaire represent many different areas within the mining industry, including a broad range of roles in industry, government, academia and in the supplies and services sector. The paper is intended to raise awareness about issues that women encounter that contribute or detract from career satisfaction in the mining industry. The survey provides an overall understanding of why women pursue or work in mining, and why women either remain or choose to leave it. The advantages and disadvantages experienced by women are highlighted, along with a summary of the possible initiatives that could be undertaken by employers as opportunities to improve the attraction of the mining industry for career minded women. As well, the survey provides a summary of the top ten features that are already in place at various organizations and community groups that have been identified as key for supporting and encouraging women to join and remain in the industry. Not surprisingly, the survey identifies that one of the key ingredients for retention of women in mining is the provision of mentors and sponsors. Another key aspect for retention is the provision of progressive employment policies that address the need for a degree of flexibility in work hours and a culture of balance between work and personal life demands. The survey and results are portrayed only from a female perspective since it is largely women?s perceptions that will inevitably be transmitted to others who plan on entering the field.

The separation of nickel and cobalt from calcium, magnesium and manganese by solvent extraction using synergistic mixtures of carboxylic acids was studied. Addition of certain viable synergists to commercially available tertiary branched carboxylic acids, such as Versatic 10 (Shell) or Neodecanoic acid (Exxon), produced large synergistic shifts (?pH50) in the pH50values for nickel, and small antagonistic shifts (negative ?pH50values) in the extraction of calcium. Under the initial test conditions used (0.50 M each of Neodecanoic acid and the Mintek synergist, in xylene) a large separation (pH50Ca? pH50Ni= 3.09 pH units) between nickel and calcium in their extraction from 1.00 M sodium nitrate solutions was obtained, compared with only 1.11 pH units in the absence of the synergist. The selectivity series for the extraction of divalent base metals from 0.333 M sodium sulphate solutions by 0.50 M Neodecanoic acid and 0.25 M of the Mintek synergist in C12-C13aliphatic diluent was found to lie in the order (with pH50values in parentheses): Cu(3.42) > Ni (5.08) > Zn (5.58) > Co (5.73) > Mn (6.62) > Ca (7.48) >Mg (8.25). In batch counter current experiments, a simulated leach liquor containing (in gL-1): Ni 5, Mg 5, Mn 2, Co 0.5, Ca 0.5, Cu 0.1and Zn 0.1 was contacted with the mixed extractant in three stages at unit phase ratio and an equilibrium pH of 5.9. The recovery of nickel was 99.9 per cent and that of cobalt was 84.7 per cent, whilst the co-extractions of manganese, calcium and magnesium were 2.7,1.5 and 0.04 per cent, respectively. The recovery of cobalt can be enhanced by employing a slightly higher pH, although this will also increase the extraction of manganese, calcium and magnesium somewhat. Nearly quantitative stripping (99 per cent) of nickel from the loaded organic phase was achieved in a single contact at an organic-to-aqueous phase ratio of 4 using a simulated spent electrolyte containing 39 gL-1sulphuric acid and 33 gL-1nickel,thereby producing an ?advance electrolyte? containing 57 gL-1nickelat pH 3.5. Loading of acid into the organic phase was very slight, amounting to only 0.002 M H+in contact with the above-mentioned spent electrolyte. "Seven lithologic units, informally characterized, were recognized in the vicinity of the Montauban orebody. The first five lie in stratigraphic order. From structural bottom to structural top these are: (1) grey composite gneiss; (2) dark grey quartz-biotite gneiss; (3) quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss hosting several calcareous, aluminous and magnesian members and gold mineralization; (4) light grey quartz-muscovite-(sericite)-biotite gneiss; and (5) metabasafts. The last two intrude the sequence: (6) amphibolite dykes and (7) pegmatite veins. The orebody lies on the inverted limb of an overturned synform verging to the west with the metabasafts marking the core of the fold. As the foliation is folded, this fold is attributed to deformation ""D2""; deformation ""DI"" being responsible for the formation of the foliation. A late brittle deformation developed shear zones with probable strike-slip motions. The refined stratigraphy and the identification of the structural position of the orebody provide new tools for regional interpretation and prospecting.RESUMESept unités lithologiques ont été définies informeffement à proximité du gisement de Montauban. COLUMBIUM (niobium) and tantalum are similar refractory metals with closely related properties and uses and close association in ore deposits. Until recently both metals, particularly columbium, were essentially laboratory curiosities. However, since the beginning of World War II, applied technology, under the impetus of national security requirements, has realized many chemical, electronic, nucleonic, and missile and rocketry applications, where high temperature or corrosive environments require the use of columbium or tantalum. At the same time, advances in these fields have resulted in intensive research on the geological distribution, resources, metallurgy, and properties of these two metals; their alloys and compounds; and the development of a full-fledged columbium-tantalum industry. The future appears to promise continued acceleration in such studies and ever-increasing demand for these elements. The raw material supplies of columbium are abundant, and the extractive metallurgy of columbium is well enough advanced to assure adequate supplies of the element at reasonable prices to meet any projected demands. Although the extractive metallurgy of tantalum is similarly well developed, raw material supplies are so limited that, lacking new ore discoveries, an increase in demand to five times the 1959 level would severely tax ore-production facilities. Approximately 120 tons of tantalum and about one-half as much columbium was produced in 1959. Additional quantities are consumed as compounds or additive alloys such as ferrocolumbium and ferrotantalum columbium (55).3

After completing a feasibility study in 1987, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) obtained five Gold Mining Leases within PA 632, covering the Mount Victor and Clarkes Ridge gold deposits. Reserves prior to mining were 260 000t at 3.63g/t Au for Mount Victor and 40 000t at 2.8g/t Au for Clarkes Ridge. Ore was mined from the two deposits by NML from November 1987 to January 1990. A total of 645kg of gold and 346kg of silver were produced from 198 000 tonnes of ore pro- cessed. Mining and milling operations ceased in February 1990. Since then, there has been significant progress in rehabilitating and revegetating the site. Plant and workshop facilities have been dismantled and removed from site, exposed parts of the pit have been landscaped and replanted, tailings water has been neutralised and discharged, and the dam filled. All remaining personnel and equipment left the site in November 1990. It is envisaged that the replanted areas will be rapidly revegetated, leaving little evidence of mining. Niugini Mining did not recoup the initial investment for Mount Victor, but the mine produced a positive cash flow and made a significant' financial contribution to the local communities and Papua New Guinea as a Whole.

Synthesis of alumina-mullite-silicon carbide composite (Al2O3-Al6Si2O13-SiCw) was obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of kaolin and two different silica sources. The carbothermal reduction was carried out in a horizontal tube furnace under flow of argon gas. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina, mullite and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of adding two different silica sources of rice husk ash and silica powder to the mixture of kaolin and activated carbon were investigated. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3- Al6Si2O13-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having whisker morphology.
