"Several copper deposits have the arsenic bearing minerals enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S12). Since this mineral contain both arsenic and copper, it is not possible to remove the arsenic by selective flotation. Partial roasting is a method to clean the concentrate from arsenic and thereby produce a suitable raw material for the copper smelter. Also mercury is commonly found in copper bearing minerals. In the partial roasting process both arsenic and mercury are volatilized, while part of the sulphur is used as energy during the roasting. This gives a calcine suitable as feed to a smelter, much like an ordinary copper concentrate. A typical analysis of calcine would be: S content 18–22%, As content below 0.3%, Cu content – not affected, grain size – not affected. However, if the concentrate contains mercury, the mercury will be volatilized during the roasting process. This will lead to very high mercury contents in the subsequent process of sulphuric acid, unless the SO2-rich process gas is pre-treated by the Boliden/Norzink process that recovers mercury as calomel, Hg2Cl2. The volatilized arsenic in the gas phase can be recovered either by dry or wet methods. However, one problem is that arsenic also contaminates the fine grained calcine dust that is captured downstream in the gas cleaning system. The calcine dust contains valuable metals such as copper, gold and silver that needs to be separated from the arsenic. The ultimate aim is to stabilize the recovered arsenic as a compound with minimum impact on the environment and recover the valuable metals. By using wet recovery methods it is possible to selectively precipitate copper, gold and silver as sulphides while arsenic is kept dissolved in the liquid. The precipitated metal sulphides can be mixed with the calcine and sent to the copper smelter. The dissolved arsenic is sent to effluent treatment and is further treated in Outotec ferric arsenate precipitation process, where arsenic is precipitated as the stable compound basic ferric arsenate, formula FeAsO4·xFe(OH)3. All concentrates containing arsenic are unique and the process design of a roaster plant must be based on relevant process data. The process data is collected during tests in lab scale and pilot scale, where the influence of critical process parameters on the quality of calcine is studied. The ability to run tests both in lab scale and pilot scale is crucial to the development of the correct roasting process. Outotec is well equipped for this."

Accurately estimating load distributions and ground responses around underground openings play a significant role in the safety of the operations in underground mines. Adequately designing pillars and other support measures relies highly on the accurate assessment of the loads that will be carried by them, as well as the load-bearing capacities of the supports. There are various methods that can be used to approximate mining-induced loads in stratified rock masses to be used in pillar design. The empirical methods are based on equations derived from large databases of various case studies. They are implemented in government-approved design tools and are widely used. There are also analytical and numerical techniques used for more detailed analysis of the induced loads. In this study, two different longwall mines with different panel width-to-depth ratios are analyzed using different methods. The empirical method used in the analysis is the square decay stress function that uses the abutment angle concept, implemented in pillar design software developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The first numerical method used in the analysis is a displacement-discontinuity (DD) variation of the boundaryelement method, LaModel, which utilizes the laminated overburden model (Heasley, 1998).

"The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) utilizes the application of centrifugal force (and the resultant enhanced gravitational field) to conventional jigging technology principles to successfully and efficiently process materials where the valuable constituent particulates are very fine and/or where there is a small specific gravity differential between these and the gangue minerals.The KCJ is applicable to a broad range of fine mineral recovery duties, with current installations in the mineral sands, tin, tantalum, gold and nickel industries. Other areas of application are being developed with mineral commodities including tungsten, base metals, iron ore, chromite and apatite/feldspar.Information on the principles of operation of the KCJ, typical performance figures in a number of application areas, comparison to centrifugal concentrators, key elements for a successful KCJ operation and recent developments with the KCJ are presented in this paper to demonstrate the capabilities of the KCJ.INTRODUCTIONAfter a number of years of development by inventor Chris Kelsey, the first commercial KCJ unit was installed at the Renison Bell tin mine in Tasmania, Australia, in 1992. The subsequent decade saw the installation of further KCJ units in applications including tin, tantalum and mineral sands.Development and improvement in KCJ hardware continued and culminated in the introduction of the high-capacity Model J1800 KCJ and standard features such as an automatic screen cleaning system. This opened up further markets and resulted in Model J1800 KCJ installations in the gold and nickel industries, as well as further KCJ installations in the mineral sands and tin industries. In recent years, work has continued on application of the KCJ to many other duties in industries including tungsten, base metals, iron ore, chromite, apatite/feldspar, etc."

Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2 wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5 wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. A President, soon after he is appointed, sees looming ahead of him the Presidential Address; and in something approaching despair wonders what he can possibly talk about which might hold the interest of his audience. After various casts about, it occurred to me that perhaps prospecting, and more particularly prospecting in Australia, might provide a subject. This is because, 'in the first place, 'prospecting is passing from the stage of chance surface discovery to that of systematic search applying scientific methods to theproblems involved, and in the second, it is the section of the industry with which I have been concerned through much of my: working life. As it makes an address of this sort more interesting if it includes specific reference to actual experience, I hope you will bear with me in such references to actual prospecting as I may use to illustrate the argument. Prospecting has always carried the glamour of sudden wealth. The picture of the prospector engaged, perhaps for years, in fruitless search suddenly coming on riches beyondhis hopes is, deeply etched in the Australian imagination. In few other places has the fervour of prospecting run higher than it did in Victoria in the generation beginning little more than a century ago following the discovery of gold.People arrived from overseas in great numbers. Most of them proceeded to: the goldfields. They moved in thousands from new find to new find. In 'so doing' they determined much of the course of the State's development. The experience of prospectors led them to formulate all sorts of theories little impeded by awkward facts, to account for the apparently unpredictable occurrence of gold.The ideas which men followed, occasionally to success, and which they were prepared to back with all they had were strange and, various, many stories are told of them.

Worldwide, the major Manganese ores can be separated into three different types: ?Oxidized ores (MnO2): in Australia, Gabon, Brazil,?. ?Semi-oxidized ores (Mn2O3): in South-Africa, Australia,?. ?Carbonated ore (MnCO3): in Ghana, South Africa, Kazhakstan?. The other Manganese ores are less rich but can be used locally or in the neighbour countries (China, Ukraina, India?). Since the beginning of the 20th Century, Manganese has played a big role in the steel industry process average usage ratio: 9,5 kg/mt of steel). The recent grow-up of this industry has led to an increase of Manganese ores demand. In parallel, several companies have increased their Manganese ore producing capacity. In this presentation, we explain the link between the main Manganese ores characteristics and the key different factors for an effective and low cost Mn alloys production (HCFeMn and SiMn): ?Chemistry ?Size ?Reactivity Then we will point out the advantages of Comilog ore and Sintec ® usages in various Manganese alloy metallurgical process compared with the other main ores and with the local ores. Some advised formulations for the different kinds of furnaces and alloys will be also discussed.

Paradoxically, the increased emphasis on water treatment in mining has generated a new problem û hypersaline brines. Currently brines are either disposed of into ash systems, lined evaporation ponds or hazardous waste sites. Evaporative crystallisation (EC) is an alternative, but the energy requirements can be prohibitive and the salt product is still a waste that must be disposed of. Eutectic freeze crystallisation (EFC) is an alternative technology that is capable of separating aqueous solutions into pure water (as ice) and pure, solidified solutes. It is highly energy efficient and does not depend on the introduction of any solvents. In addition, the simultaneous production of pure ice and potentially saleable pure salt(s) is a major advantage. Although EFC has been shown to be effective in separating a single salt and water, it is still in the early stages of being applied to the multi-component hypersaline brines that are typical of reverse osmosis retentates generated by mining and extractive metallurgy.This paper presents an EFC brine treatment protocol developed by the Crystallisation and Precipitation Unit at the University of Cape Town. The protocol incorporates brine analysis, thermodynamic modelling to establish which salts will freeze out and at which temperatures, followed by experimental studies to determine the kinetic parameters, such as nucleation temperatures, salt yields and crystal purity.Case studies showing the application of EFC for the purification of typical brines containing high levels of sodium, chlorine, sulfate and ammonia (Brine 1) and a mixture of sodium and magnesium sulfate (Brine 2) are covered. Modelling tools were applied to describe the phase behaviour of the multi-component saline systems under different process conditions. Experimental validation was carried out using synthetic brines of different (and increasingly complex) compositions. The results showed that EFC could be used to selectively recover the sodium as a sodium sulfate salt from both different brines. The simulation tools were useful in the analysis and understanding of the process.A preliminary economic analysis showed that the operating costs for EC were approximately nine times those for EFC, but the capital costs were much less- equipment for EC cost about half that of EFC. However, it is important to note that the capital cost calculations for EC are based on a technology that is already well established and with only relatively marginal future equipment cost savings expected. In contrast, EFC is a new technology, with significant future technology improvements expected.

Augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles have been utilized in the United States for a wide range of projects since the 1950's. Due to the cast-in-place nature of the installation method (and lack of a driving criteria); however, ACIP piles have not been readily accepted by some practicing geotechnical and structural engineers. Since ACIP piles were initially developed, the installation equipment and techniques have been improved and refined and the number of experienced contractors has significantly increased. Over the past 10 to 15 years, the pile type has experienced significant growth in the United States (particularly in Florida) because engineers have become more knowledgeable and comfortable with its use. The Miami area, in particular, has experienced considerable growth in the utilization of ACIP piles primarily due to their usage on the $1 billion Miami Metrorail System project in the early 1980s. The economic advantages over other deep foundation types, coupled with some unique installation advantages, have shown that ACIP piles can be a viable foundation alternative on many projects. Even though ACIP piles have gained respect in the private sector, the pile type has generally not been readily accepted by government transportation agencies. The reluctance to readily accept this foundation type stems primarily from the quality assurance aspect of cast-in-place pile construction. Additionally, there has not been much research activity on this foundation type, technical papers, formal associations (other than the DFI), or a concerted effort to standardize the industry. This paper serves to discuss the state of practice for ACIP pile installation in the state of Florida.

The primary aim of the present investigation is to develop a model which permits to calculate/predict the viscosities of ferromanganese slags, typically focus on the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-FeO multicomponent system. The present viscosity model emphasizes the ability of prediction, i.e. using the binary parameters to extrapolate the viscosities in ternary and higher order systems. To this end, a physical sound model is essential. Temperature dependence of viscosity is described by the Eyring?s formalism. The well-known cell model is used to define the SiO44- tetrahedra in the silicate melts. Composition dependence is expressed in term of viscous activation energy, which is characterized by the binary structural units. The viscosities in ternary and higher order systems are hence predicted using the binary activation parameters. The model has been used to calculate the viscosities in the whole liquid composition range of ferromanganese slag.

Different ore types result from the irregular spatial distribution of the associated alkaline/carbonatite rocks and the zoned alteration profile within which apatite may have undergone reprecipitation. Different flotation responses are caused by their mineralogy, iron oxide impregnation and grain-size characteristics. Samples from seven deposits were crushed, screened and separated before being studied by chemical analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy. Two main apatite varieties with peculiar crystal morphology were identified: hydroxy-fluorapatite as the primary phase and carbonate-fluorapatite as the reprecipitated phase. The former occurs as prismatic or ovoid grains and the latter as polycrystalline aggregates or crusts on the primary grains; both are associated with iron oxide coatings (primary) or intergrowths (secondary). Microflotation tests showed variations in flotability for particular apatite associations as well as intensity of iron oxide coatings. The differences in flotation behaviour can be related to morphological properties and chemical substitution in the apatite structure

"The El Indio roasting facility associated with El Indio Mine in Central Chile has operated since 1981. It is a facility developed to remove arsenic and antimony from gold bearing enargite/pyrite flotation concentrates.The three installed roasters are Nichols Herreschoff units each with 14 hearths and measuring 4.85 metres diameter. Hearths are rabbled by central shaft driven rabble arms. Product is progressively heated to 750°C under neutral to reducing atmospheric conditions to drive off labile sulphur, arsenic and antimony.Ancillary equipment includes skip hoist feed arrangements, water cooled screw conveyors for transporting and cooling calcine, gas cyclones, post combustion chambers, heat exchangers, electrostatic precipitators, bag houses, gas scrubbers and packaging facilities .Operating practices, history, mineralogy and results are reviewed. The improvements to arsenic and antimony extraction, ambiental conditions and environmental achievements are discussed.INTRODUCTIONHistoryThe El Indio property lies in the El Indio belt, a copper, gold and silver area approximately 175 km long by 10 km wide. The property is located in the Andes Mountains of the central part of Chile at latitude 30"" South and 160 km from the sea-side city of La Serena. The last 25 years have seen rapid expansion in the use of helical screw pile foundations and tiebacks for new and retrofit construction of buildings and earth retention structures. An estimated $100 million was spent in 2002 on helical foundations and tiebacks in the United States alone. While design information is available in the literature, information regarding quality control, inspection and performance monitoring is lacking. Recognition of at least one manufacturer's helical foundation material by the Uniform Building Code, Standard Building Code, and BOCA (all three codes now combined into the ICC International Building Code) has given added urgency to the dissemination of reliable and practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures. This paper describes a set of such procedures that have been followed for 17 years by engineers experienced in the industry who have directly installed or been involved in the installation of over 140,000 helical foundations and tiebacks in divers soil conditions for various types of structures, including earth retention structures. Topics covered include design responsibility, building code listings and requirements, manufacturer ISO certification, manufacturing process, material and installation specifications, installation contractor certification, field placement, installation procedures, field inspection, building code inspection and performance monitoring. The paper concludes with a step by step example of practical quality control, inspection and performance monitoring procedures on a typical helical foundation project.

The past 40 years have seen the sand and gravel industry grow from small roadside pits and holes in farmers' back yards to giant corporations selling millions of tons of sand and gravel each year and owning plants representing huge capital investments in land and equipment. The days hen a man could "work out" his taxes by providing the materials for nearby roads are gone forever. In addition to the hundreds of privately owned and operated plants, Government agencies operate sand and gravel pits and plants to supply aggregates for the tremendous road-building and public-works programs in progress during the past few years. EXPANDING PRODUCTION In 1940 the send and gravel industry produced almost a quarter of a billion short tons valued at more than 110 million dollars. This compares with less than 2 million short tons worth 1 1/2 million dollars produced in 1902. The practice of screening sand and throwing away the gravel in the early days of the industry's growth has stopped, and in 1940 gravel constituted two-thirds of the total production. Push backs used in the production planning of open pit mines play an integral role in generating annual cash flow. Although several algorithms for push back designs have been proposed, none have studied the optimum number of push backs. In this paper, different algorithms have been implemented for the push back design of a cross section of a copper deposit and the results discussed. Moreover, the optimum number of push backs has been determined using analytical and multiple attribute decision making (MADM) methods based on minimizing the risk associated with grade uncertainty, and minimizing stripping ratio, while maximizing net present value (NPV). According to the findings, the optimum number of push backs has been proposed to be between three and six, as lower quantities of push backs are more likely to achieve the calculated net present value, and have smoother stripping ratios for different pushbacks. This approach was examined in an operating mine and the optimum number of push backs determined to be four.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. Disequilibrium ratios (U3O8/eU3O8), which assess the degree to which gamma activity represents the uranium content of a sample, have been measured on a representative set of samples from the ore zone of a carnotite ranium deposit located at Yeelirrie, Western Australia. A statistical analysis has been performed to investigate the dependence of the ratios on lithology and on the location of the sample in the orebody. The analysis indicates that dependence on lithology and on position across the orebody is negligible. Samples from the western end of the orebody and those from below the water table level tend to have slightly lower ratios than samples from other positions, although these trends are small compared with a large random variation in the data. The large random variation could result from some redistribution of the daughter isotopes of uranium within the orebody. On the basis of the results from all the samples, the estimated deficiency of uranium relative to radium in the ore zone of the deposit is 11 per cent.

Previous paleodepth studies of low-sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Coromandel region indicated that economic gold mineralisation was generally limited to a depth zone of 100 to 400 m below the paleosurface. Notable exceptions are Waihi and Karangahake, where ore shoots extended to depths of about 750 and 900 m respectively. These studies have been extended to include Au-Ag, Hg and Sb epithermal deposits in Northland and the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The main paleodepth indicators used are sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias, hydrostatic pressures estimated from homogenisation temperature measurements on fluid inclusions, and hydrothermal alteration mineralogy. Also the occurrence of lacustrine and fluvial sediments is an indicator of the paleosurface at their time of deposition. Selected paleodepth indicators have been compiled and mapped in a GIS environment. The distribution of the paleodepth indicators are used to define regional variations in erosion levels, and may be useful in predicting areas most likely to preserve the optimum depth window for gold deposition. In the Coromandel region, regional stream sediment geochemical data has also been used to broadly define erosion levels in terms of Zn, Pb and Cu representing deeper base metal zone mineralization and Hg and Sb representing shallower cinnabar and stibnite mineralisation. The interpretations of paleodepth and potential reconstruction of paleosurfaces are limited by the paucity of data, poor age control on the paleodepth indicators and the epithermal deposits, and marked relief and complex stratigraphy in the volcanic terranes.

Video technology is becoming an important tool for many designers of industrial training programs. This report describes how trainers at the Minntac Mine, Mt. Iron, MN, have developed videocassettes of safe job procedures (SJP's) for training miners assigned to perform unfamiliar work tasks. All steps necessary for videocassette production, from idea to finished product, as well as the required equipment and prices, are listed and/or briefly explained. Minntac officials believe that the SJP videocassettes have contributed significantly to a reduction in mine accidents.
