Federal regulations require the use of methane monitors on all mining machines. All machine-mounted methane monitors currently used in underground coal mines rely on catalytic heat of combustion sensors. As a comparison, although not currently approved for use on underground mining equipment, instruments with infrared sensors are evaluated in this study. Potential advantages of using infrared sensors include faster response time, long-term stability, and reduced maintenance needs. Tests conducted in the laboratory and at a full-scale model mine compare the performance of catalytic heat of combustion and infrared sensors operating under test conditions designed to simulate airflow conditions underground.

A discussion on simulation tools to aid the development of robotics platforms is presented. The focus of the work is towards mining robotics platforms where operations are typically in unstructured, unpredictable environments and a high degree of dependability in their operations is required. It is argued that a test-based development approach leads to more robust solutions and faster development cycles than traditional single-track field-only development and that the key enabling technology for this development paradigm is the judicious use of simulation tools. The future direction of simulation for use in online applications such as active planning and as a means to assist tele-operation in high latency communication applications is also brief y considered together with the requirements for a useful simulation environment in terms of the simulator architecture. Finally, a case study is presented on the application of the discussed methodologies to an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for earth-moving tasks, which is being developed in an accelerated time frame with a transient development team.

Relatively infrequent use by metallurgists of the term "sponge chromium" as contrasted to more than occasional reference to "sponge iron" may be ascribed to the fact that the former material is not a commercial product, while the latter has been known and used, at least in one form (Swedish sponge iron), for several decades. It is doubtful whether a true sponge chromium ever has been prepared heretofore in the laboratory by more than one or two investigators. Nature presents a much. more difficult problem to the investigator endeavoring to make sponge chromium than pertains to the production of more easily reducible elements such as iron or nickel. Recent widespread interest among metallurgists in the possibilities of powder metallurgy is ample incentive to explore the feasibility of producing pure chromium metal in finely divided form. The shift in terminology of this statement from "sponge" to the "finely divided form" is deliberate in emphasis of distinction between terms that occasionally have been used loosely. It would seem desirable that a uniform usage descriptive of finely divided metals be adopted. While to some it might seem preferable that the terra "powdered" metal be reserved for a finely divided form produced by mechanical means, as, for example, chromium produced by the mechanical comminution of electrolytic sheets or flakes, current usage of the term "powder metallurgy' involves no distinction as to source type of material. It is usually accepted, however, that a sponge metal is one reduced from oxide or other combined form at temperatures below the melting point of metal or oxide so that the particles of metal are pseudomorphic, at least macroscopically, with the source material, and, in consequence of the loss of material without change of external shape of the particles necessarily have an open, porous, or "spongy" structure.

Comminution is a vital part of minerals extraction, and therefore of the South African economy. The high cost and throughput-limiting nature of comminution forms a strong motivation for research directed at improving the efficiency of the process. Building on a ten year background of fundamental charge motion research, a new formal UCT flotation and communication group has been formed. The group is also moving strongly into the field of milling circuit modelling and simulation, based on close links formed with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of Australia, and an international collaborative research programme.

The end of an era is here. The pony-express era of industrial relations in the coal industry is ending. Those professionals who know it must end to insure the industry's future are happy, relieved, but somewhat saddened. They are sad because it did have its elements of suspense, thrills, frustrations, and at times, plain fun. The days of the Company town are ended; the wildcats are declining; violence (while a big part of today's industrial relations) is beginning-to decline. The spirit of sound industrial relations is beginning to take hold. This has to happen for the industry to compete in today's economy and it is causing major changes for those who have grown accustomed to the pony-express type industrial relations.

The Bright water Conveyance System includes 21 km of tunnels mined by two earth pressure balance Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and two slurry TBMs. The probabilistic baseline approach defined in the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) can representatively be verified by use of a comprehensive tracking system to identify face conditions that allows comparison with the baselines. The glacial geology includes a high lateral variation in soil types that, when combined with the pressurized face tunneling methods, creates challenges for documenting face conditions. Baseline tracking using spoil samples and TBM operational parameters provides information to document actual conditions and support resolution of differing site condition claims.

The Murray Basin is being heralded as the next major mineral sands province in Australia. Already exploration programs have delineated extensive commercial deposits and several companies are progressing with plans to produce zircon, rutile and ilmenite in the Basin. As these deposits are developed consideration will need to be given to several key issues of the Murray Darling Basin; the availability of fresh water and management of salinity in the area being two of them. In this paper ideas being developed in CSIRO that link the processing of mineral sands with the salinity problem in the Basin are presented. The proposal presented here is to process saline water to produce industrial minerals with large volume applications and to produce value-added products from the mineral sands in the Basin using reagents produced from the saline waters. Processes to produce titania pigment and zirconia consume chlorine, caustic soda, soda ash and hydrochloric acid, all derivatives of salt (sodium chloride). There may be a good economic incentive if these processing plants were located in the close vicinity of each other.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, copper coolers, freeze lining, monitoring, Saveway The use of water-cooled copper components as sidewall elements of submerged arc furnaces and other pyrometallurgical applications has become increasingly common. The high cooling efficiency of copper has made it possible to increase the service life of furnace refractories when compared to conventional refractory linings. However even the self-healing effect of ?freezing? worn areas of the lining does not necessarily protect the copper coolers against wear or corrosion completely. In order to avoid furnace explosions, various methods have been used to monitor the wear of coolers. Unfortunately, these have not been able to consistently identify localized wear. Thos Begbie (South African) and SAVEWAY (German) jointly developed technology to embed a line sensor into the copper cooler during the casting process. This system allows an exhaustive monitoring of the copper cooler. A SAVELINE sensor is placed inside the copper-cooling panel between the water-cooling passage and the hot face of the panel. The sensor follows the meandering shape of the cooling water channels. In the first instance, the sensor provides analogue information as the thickness of the copper reduces. Secondly, this wear signal will be confirmed by a signal of interruption if the sensor is washed away. Because of the structure of the sensor, a self-diagnosis is possible and indications can be confirmed (double proofed). Subsequent to the manufacture of some test pieces, coolers for a large submerged arc furnace were manufactured. The sensorized coolers have been installed at the intermittent surface (slag line) where the largest amount of corrosion has been encountered. The system has been operating since December 2005 in what is considered one of the largest submerged arc furnaces in South Africa.

The mechanization of platinum group metal (PGM) underground reef mining in South Africa has posed a challenge to mining engineers for several decades. This is primarily due to the shallow dip angles and narrow thickness (<1.1m) of the tabular orebodies mined, and the issues faced in developing reliable drilling, bolting and loading machines suitable for such hard-rock mining applications. Presently, mining is typically conducted using hand drills and scraper shovels. These methods, however, are intensive in terms of manual labor, and limited in terms of productivity, and improved methods are desired. This paper will review the technical features of a 4 tonne, low-profile, LHD for narrow-reef PGM mining, developed by EJC Loaders Division.

Models are used in engineering to reproduce reality as faithfully as possible so that the expected response of a system for given actions or inputs can be determined. In the field of rock engineering, both empirically based and numerical models are widely used to determine the likely response of the rock surrounding excavations. Many of the empirical models are developed from statistical analysis of case histories or from direct observation; however, empirical models are limited because they should be used only within the range of conditions of the observational database. Synergy exists between empirical and numerical models, because empirical models can be used to calibrate and validate numerical models. The empirical approach can benefit from the capability of numerical models to investigate specific mechanisms, which would not be possible using observations alone. Two cases are presented in which the synergy between empirical and numerical models is demonstrated. The first case examines the analysis of discontinuity effects on the strength of slender pillars in limestone mines, and the second case evaluates the effects of stress orientation on coal mine entry stability. It is concluded that numerical model calibration and verification comprises an important first stage in the successful application of models in rock engineering design. Application of numerical models allows mechanisms and interactions of various parameters to be analysed, greatly improving the understanding of the system. The improved understanding can be used to extend the application of empirical design methods, resulting in improved safety and efficiency of rock engineering designs.

Past successes of low impact mineral exploration and rehabilitation of mined areas in developed land of subdued contour provide little guidance for similar activity in more sensitive high country or mountain environments. Land management agencies and environmental pressure groups have expressed considerable concern about mineral development in these areas by land especially where the land involved has high environmental or productive values. Mineral explorers are responding with detailed proposals for integration of environmental assessment and mineral exploration at an early stage. A model programme for Fiordland National Park presented in this paper illustrates this approach.

This paper, describing the mining and reduction methods and costs at the Oceanic quicksilver mine, is one of a series of similar reports being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on various mines in the United states. The property, which is owned and operated by the Anglo American Mining Corporation, Ltd., is 5 miles east of Cambria, San Luis Obispo County, Calif. It lies in a region of steep hills and sharply incised canyons on the west slope of the Santa Lucia Range at an elevation of about 500 feet above sea level. The climate is ideal for living and operating conditions. A 40-mile paved highway connects the mine with San Luis Obispo, the nearest convenient railroad town.

&nbsp;The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthennometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10 - 15 J.UIl in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170 - 220¦C in early 2A veins, 165 - 322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190 - 256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8 - 11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 urn are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160 - 268¦C and salinities of 5 - 8 NaCl equiv. wt %. Laser Raman spectroscopic (LRS) analysis indicates the presence of CO2 (&lt;1 mole %) in the Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers VHMS systems. Semi-quantitative SEM/WDS microprobe analyses of fluid inclusion decrepitates indicate that the Hellyer and Mt Chalmers ore fluids were enriched in potassium and calcium but depleted in magnesium relative to seawater. PIXE microanalysis of fluid inclusions in quartz also indicates a significant base metal concentration in these fluids. Cation composition and higher salinities relative to seawater suggest that recycled seawater alone cannot be the sole source of the ore fluids. High base metal content and the presence of CO2 in the fluid inclusions imply that magmatic input of ore metals during seawater leaching of the footwall volcanic pile is a distinct possibility.

"Water is a very important component in the production process at underground coal mines. Current unfavourable economic conditions have forced the coal mining industry to identify and address every possible bottleneck preventing optimal production. An increase in water-related downtime was identified as one of the bottlenecks at Goedehoop Colliery’s Vlaklaagte Shaft. The purpose of this project was to identify the various causes that contributed to the high downtime (501 hours in 2013, which led to a potential profit loss of R12.9 million) and to suggest possible solutions.After a thorough investigation the main causes of water-related downtime were identified as low water pressure and low water flow caused by pipe leakages and bursts. The main root cause for the low water flow and pressure was identified as being the low pressure resistance (1600kPa) of the thin-walled galvanized steel pipes used in the underground inbye water reticulation system. The pipes were selected according to the previous 1000 kPa pressure requirement for the continuous miner. However, the pressure requirement changed to 1500 kPa, which resulted in the pipes being exposed to much higher pressures than designed for.The water reticulation system was reviewed and current and future underground pipe layout and water requirements were determined for the shaft. The time frame in which the water consumption would be the highest was determined to be between 1 January 2014 and 7 September2014. Machine and sprayer specifications were used to determine theater consumption at the shaft. Three different solutions were considered to solve the water-related downtime problem and to ensure the efficient supply of water to the newly open sections. Permanent underground concrete dams, semi-mobile dams, or new pipe columns with a higher pressure resistance of 3200 kPa were considered. A trade-off study (taking into consideration cost, time to completion and ease of implementation, maintenance requirements, safety, and flexibility) was completed to determine which of these solutions would be most viable.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

THERE are certain facts that the mining industry in Australia is faced with at the present moment which may be accepted as axioms. The industry is at a low ebb, as evidenced by statistics. Metals form the basis of all modern industries, and are necessaryfor the welfare of Australia. Mining is a wasting asset. Every ton of ore extracted is one ton less which c.annot be made good, and it should be our duty to get as much profit froin that ore as possible, otherwise there is a permanent loss to the country.The metal market cannot be controlled by Australia; it is more or less an international matter. Australia has not been thoroughly prospected. There are no mines being developed that are likely to replace those which are being depleted.Our mining engineers are as capable as those in other parts of the world, and have made good where they have been given a chance. There is no one cause for the present depression; there are several, more or less, interwoven. Of course, the war has had an adverse effect, but that has only dislocated things temporarily; it upset our markets, influenced the price of metals, and affected the labour market and cost of stores. Labour troubles made their appearance before the wave of unrest swept over the world. The cause of labour discontent must be investigated, and if possible removed. As each industry has .its&#183;own problems, miners must inquire into their special problems, as there is no sovereign remedy that will suit all cases.It is obvious that we cannot mine ore if we do not know where it is; therefore, the first thing is to discover workable deposits.

Finely ground beryl was decomposed by mixing with ground limestone and soda ash and heating at 900&#176;C for 4-6 hr. The sintered mater:al was then crushed and leached by boiling under reflux with 5N sulphuric acid for up to 4 hr. The liquor containing Be, AI, Fe and other elements as sulphates, was separated from the residue which consisted mainly of silica and gypsum, either by filtration or bydecantation washing.The clarified leach liquor was first treated to remove Fe+++ by contacting with a primary amine-kerosene solution in 2 countercurrent stages. The iron free liquor was then passed to a 4-stage counter-current extraction unit where it was contacted with O&#183;5M di- (2 ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) in kerosene. Under the operating conditions, 99 per cent of the Be and 7 per cent of the Al was extracted.The Be and Al were stripped from the organic phase by sodium hydroxide solution of suitable concentration to form soluble &quot;beryllate&quot; and &quot;aluminate&quot; respectively. Most of the Be was subsequently precipitatedas Be(OH)2 by heating the alkaline solution to 90&#176;C, the Al remaining in solution. After filtration and washing, the Be(OH)2 could be ignited directly to BeO at about 1000&#176;C or used as a feed to further purification stages if required.A small counter-current extraction unit was operated continuously using liquor derived from the sintering and leaching stages. Dataobtained in batch laboratory tests were confirmed. A product obtained by ignition of the washed &quot;beryllate&quot; precipitate contained more than 99 per cent BeO.INTRODUCTIONIn 1958 an investigation was commenced into the recovery of beryllium oxide from beryl, as part of a programme to utilize mineral resources of South Australia. Piled raft foundation under uniformly distributed vertical loads has been analyzed using Finite Element Method. The soil is considered to be linear elastic, isotropic, homogeneous. The raft,pile and the soil have been idealized with eight noded brick elements. Parametric study have been carried out varying pile length, soil modulus, raft thickness, and pile spacing. Design charts have been produced to achieve 50% load sharing between pile and raft for optimum design. Data available in literature is compared with the design chart results and found satisfactory.

Andalusite is an excellent raw material for refractory applications due to its high aluminum oxide content and phase transformation to mullite at high temperature. Granular andalusite in particle sizes of about 1 to 2 mm was traditionally utilized for the manufacturing of refractory brick. However, if powder andalusite in micron particle size is utilized in high-alumina refractory products, reinforcement on the refractory brick can be obtained and the sintering temperature can be decreased. The phase transformation of powder andalusite plays a key role for the difference.
