Pillar extraction at shallow depths with small pillars that were not originally intended for secondary extraction can provide a huge benefit to the coal mining industry in those areas where a significant percentage of the remaining coal reserves are locked up in small pillars at shallow depths and where opencast mining methods are simply not as cost-effective and practical to implement. A system considering all of the pertinent geotechnical and mining aspects for the safe and efficient pillar extraction of small pillars at shallow depths at Xstrata Coal South Africa (XCSA) has been further developed and implemented as part of an ongoing improvement process addressing all of the relevant legal and associated risk aspects. This work follows on from the previous pillar extraction work carried out at the ATC, Boschmans, and Spitzkop Collieries. The process involved a number of in-house workshops and sessions arranged with all key personnel from Tavistock Colliery, and also included Professor Nielen van der Merwe of the University of the Witwatersrand, a world renowned authority on pillar extraction, towards reviewing and developing the Modified NEVID pillar extraction system employed previously at Boschmans Colliery. The system is currently being employed at Tavistock Colliery with success and no major accidents, with around 655 000 t of coal having been successfully extracted from the pillar extraction panels.

When a rock particle is subjected to an external force, internal stresses and deformations are experienced by the particle. Assuming that the breakage of a rock is mainly due to tensile stresses generated by the action of a pair of concentrated loads, F, directed in compression towards the loading points at the shortest distance, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the stress and deformation experienced by a particle of irregular shape can be determined with the aid of the theory of elasticity. According to the photoelastic experiments made by one of the present authors,' the stress states in a rock particle of irregular shape are quite similar to that of an inscribed sphere of diameter x, as indicated in Fig. 1, but accompanied by the faint stresses, in the vicinity of the particle outside of the inscribed sphere. Therefore, the stress components in an irregularly shaped particle can be estimated by referring to stress components in a sphere. Applying polar spherical coordinates to an elastic spherical body, as shown in Fig. 1, the stress components are all expressed as multiples of F /x2 and more or less influenced by the loading angle and Poisson's number m. DEPOSITS of iron are widely scattered in the folded Cretaceous rocks and the associated igneous intrusives of Puerto Rico. Most of them are too small for commercial development, but a few have aroused some scientific and economic interest, among them the large body of residua] limonite at the west end of the island near Mayaguez1-6 (Fig. 1) and the mixed hematite and magnetite deposit on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cayey, about four miles north of Arroyo.7-9 Neither of these orebodies has been developed, nor have investigations of the widely distributed deposits of magnetite, which include all the remaining occurrences of iron deserving of economic consideration, proceeded beyond the exploratory stage. With the possible exception of the mixed deposit near Arroyo, the magnetite is directly associated with andesitic and dioritic intrusives, which invade the Cretaceous rock section, and the bulk of it, occurring in calcareous sediments, is clearly of contact-replacement origin. Water solidification of mattes, metals, alloys and certain slags with high metal entrainment has customarily not been practiced due to the belief that such processes are too dangerous and unproven in the Pyrometallurgical Industry. Slag granulation on the other hand is extensively applied, although in some cases crudely, with disastrous effects, as a result of not recognising the high heat capacities prevalent in slags. This paper will examine the most common air solidification processes and compare such processes with water solidification, mainly slag and matte granulation processes and design criteria for safe and reliable operation. Finally, purpose designed granulation and solidification processes will be discussed taking into account specific applications and the individual signatures of alloys and slags, emphasising that no slag, matte or alloy responds in similar fashion to a granulation practice.

This is the third of the series of reports on coal-mine royalties and leasing conditions in Illinois. The results of the study of District VI were published as Serial No. 2726, January, 1926, and those of District VIII as Serial No. 2745, April, 1926, of the Bureau of mines. The counties of Macoupin, Sangamon, and Montgomery, which are three of the principal coal-producing areas in the northern part of District VII, have been chosen for this report because these counties cover an entirely different part of the State than do the two districts already covered. Some leases in, Randolph and Washington counties are included as they are in the southern part of the district, and the data happened to be readily available.

Production planning techniques, particularly a production scheduling model are proposed for use in taconite mining in Minnesota. Applications of the scheduling model, on a two-year mine plan, which evaluates the equipment involved, are detailed. Data and tables are included. INTRODUCTION Fifty years ago Walter Swart, a mining engineer investigating the Minnesota taconites for the Jackling interests, made this report: "There is no doubt in my mind that this taconite mining is a game worth playing and that it can be played to a successful finish. It seems now only a question of men, money, methods and details."' The prosperous industry envisioned by Swart and other taconite pioneers is today a reality. Its growth has been spurred by technological advances in mining and beneficiation, depletion of natural ore reserves, and improvement of the economic climate. However, the massive problems that were solved to make this development possible are only a foreshadowing of the questions of "men, money, methods and details" that will be encountered in the future. The increasing demands for higher quality taconite pellets have already forced producers to examine better methods of quality control for their operations. THE NEED FOR PRODUCTION SCHEDULING The maintenance of fairly constant crude ore characteristics is of major importance to mill quality control. Through careful mixing of ore from storage bins, the concentrator staff can partially reduce the deviations of the feed analysis from the analysis desired. However, the limited effectiveness of bin mixing systems has caused some mining companies to utilize large capacity blending piles to reduce grade variations. Although the analysis of material being reclaimed from such a pile is relatively uniform, raw materials still must be scheduled from the mine into the pile in such a manner that the average analysis of all material is close to the feed analysis prescribed by the mill. PRODUCTION SCHEDULING MODEL Minnesota taconite mining companies have used three analyses to estimate how a certain ore will react to concentration. These factors are the crude magnetic iron content of the ore, the iron content of the plant concentrate produced from the ore at a standard grind, and the grindability index of the ore. The actual laboratory tests used to determine these factors have been described by Apuli.2 These data are obtained from analysis of diamond drill cores, and are the established criteria used by mine planning engineers to formulate taconite production schedules. Variations in the grade of mine output should be controlled by any production scheduling system. However, to be truly practical, production scheduling methods must also consider many of the less tangible variables that affect mine operation. These include pit layout, available equipment, and ownership of ore leases. The number and scope of the variables inherent in this type of mine planning suggested that a computer simulation could be used to solve the problem. The preparation of information for use with a computer simulation program was the initial phase of this project. Meaningful data was developed from logs of diamond drill cores. Analyses were related to their respective areas of influence by means of mine maps, Fig. 1. The three assay variables and tonnages for each area were punched on cards. In addition to these values, a location code number was punched in the first eight columns of the cards. This code is explained as follows: Column 1 Bench number Column 2 Quadrant location as determined by mine reference lines Columns 3-5 East-west coordinate Columns 6-8 North-south coordinate The heart of any simulation techniques is a well engineered mathematical model. To develop a model for taconite production scheduling, the relationship between the three assay variables had to be established. IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

Potential air emission impacts to federal Class I areas from distant sources are receiving increasing scrutiny by federal land managers (FLMs). This paper provides summary results of the impact analyses conducted for FLMs and PSD permitting of a proposed expansion for a taconite processing facility. Results from air quality increment, acid deposition, mercury deposition, and visibility analyses for Class I areas located 50 to 162 km from the facility showed the project would meet the respective regulatory and guideline values for the specific analyses. During the course of the air quality analyses, potential new requirements from the FLMs’ Air Quality Related Values Workgroup (FLAG) efforts and USEPA’s Regional Haze Program were brought into the PSD discussions. The implications for these future guidelines and regulations as they may affect future expansions at other mineral processing facilities are also discussed.

The north central and northeastern states supply over 50 pct of the chemical and metallurgical limestone produced annually in the United States, and Ontario is the leading source of this material in Canada. About three fourths of the chemical and metallurgical stone produced in this area comes from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Ontario. The specifications, physical and especially chemical, for chemical and metallurgical stone depend upon the end use, but in general the tolerance for impurities is so low as to rule out most limestones and dolomites. Both high calcium limestone and dolomite are used in the metallurgical and chemical industries. The principal metallurgical use is as a flux in iron ore blast furnaces and open hearth steel furnaces. The major chemical uses are in lime burning and soda-ash manufacture. Other important uses include glass manufacture, in making calcium carbide, and in sugar factories. All deposits of high quality carbonate rock are definitely finite. Invariably and inevitably they diminish in either thickness or quality laterally so as to become unworkable as chemical and metallurgical stone. The size of these high quality lenses ranges from a few thousands of tons to hundreds of millions of tons. The best hunting for new supplies is in the geologic formations known to contain premium quality deposits. However, because of high transportation costs, carbonate rocks, to be workable, must be close to market, dollarwise. Definitions: Chemical stone is limestone or dolomite used as a raw material by the chemical industry. The major chemical uses are in lime burning and soda-ash manufacture. Other important uses include glass manufacture, making calcium carbide, and in sugar factories. The specifications for chemical stone depend entirely upon the end product. Some uses require dolomite, some require high calcium limestone; in a few instances, notably in lime burning, either type of carbonate rock can be used as raw material. As a general rule, a fairly pure stone is necessary and for certain particular uses the tolerance for some elements such as sulfur, iron, and phosphorus may be extremely small. Metallurgical stone is used as a flux in furnace operations, especially in the blast furnace where iron ore is converted into pig iron and in the open hearth furnace where pig iron is made into steel. Either limestone or dolomite can be used in the blast furnace, but only high calcium stone is charged in the open hearth (except for rice-size dolomite used as a refractory). There are no rigid chemical specifications for blast furnace stone, but low silica, alumina, sulfur, and phosphorus are desirable. For open hearth use, in addition to low magnesia, a very low sulfur content is also specified by many furnace operators. For furnace use, fluxstone also must be sufficiently shatter resistant that it will remain in lump form during transport and charging into the furnace. Commercial stone is the term applied in the trade for crushed stone used for roadstone and in concrete aggregate. Many of our best chemical and metallurgical limestones are too soft to qualify in the Los Angeles abrasion test for use as commercial stone. However, some limestones, and a higher proportion of dolomites, do qualify for commercial stone and so can be sold to either market. Place Value: Even the highest grade limestone is still a bulk commodity with a relatively low value per ton. As a matter of fact there is very little difference in the average price per ton between high grade chemical and metallurgical stone and crushed limestone used commercially. Most high quality stone is produced in large operations with consequent low cost per ton whereas most commercial stone is produced in relatively small local quarries. Many mining operations have gained an impressive expertise in trouble shooting and maintenance with their existing fleet over the years. Whether it is an in-house maintenance group or an external service group - most of the systems weak points are well known and can be corrected by maintenance personnel. As some of these issues get more and more serious each year, too much time is lost in unscheduled downtime, often taking hours to be repaired and to find the failure with obsolete diagnostic tools (Fig. 1.). Many of the breakdowns result from failures that cannot be detected in advance. The maintenance system is much more reactive than preventative. The state of the art of mining equipment today uses advanced, efficient, and reliable systems for electrical drives, control and diagnostics of the machines. The demand for highly sophisticated solutions on such mining equipment is well known. Mining operators need to ensure the highest level of productivity, lowest operating costs, least maintenance and highest reliability in a drive system. The paper will introduce you to the state of the art of drives technology for dragline (Fig. 2) and shovel mining equipment (Fig. 3).

"Modern train load out stations are becoming faster and have the ability to load a 100 wagon train in less than three hours. At 70 metric tonnes per wagon, that is an average fill rate of 2333 t/h and considering the train is continuously moving, the instantaneous feed rate into the wagon is in the region of 4200 t/h.The main feed conveyor that maintains the level in the surge hopper, above the final weigh hopper, operates in excess of 5000 t/h to ensure uninterrupted charging of the weigh hopper to not disrupt the train loading operation.To avoid demurrage costs (a charge by the Rail Operating Company for exceeding the contractually agreed loading time) the train has to be handled speedily and efficiently and spend the absolute minimum time at the loading facility. Everything else has a much lower priority, including sampling.Thermo Fisher Scientific’s brief was an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract to provide a sampling scheme adjacent to the prepurchased and predesigned load-out facility, but which interfaced seamlessly with the loading system of the trains and provided the following: an instantaneous particle size distribution (PSD) result for each truck loaded, and a final PSD for the total train prior to the train leaving the loading facility a crushed (-3 mm) composite sample for chemical analysis for the whole train a composite physical analysis sample for the whole train.The design presented some interesting challenges to our team, but the end result is a system that not only ‘stands alone’ but interfaces seamlessly with the loading system. The method combines the practicality of digital image processing of the rock surface with the theoretical volume calculations based on principles and laws of fractal geometry. Sustainability of energy supplies has been an issue of general interest for a long time. Whilst in the past the continuous productive use of natural commodities was in the fore, its compatibility with the environment and climate and ultimately also social aspects have recently gained more and more attention. Today many discussions focus on the climate compatibility of individual options to act. Fossil fuels, in particular coal and lignite, are generally challenged because coal use makes a significant contribution to global man-made CO2 emissions. The drastic increase in the consumption of fossil fuels is not explained by the fact that coal utilisation technologies are not or cannot be sustainable but rather by the growing world population and the endeavours numerous national economies trying to catch up economically. Coal is the world’s No. 1 fuel and, in the view of many experts, will keep this position also in the foreseeable future. The access to its deposits plays a significant role for the economies of the emerging countries. Consequently the aspects of energy security and economic efficiency need to be considered at eye level with climate compatibility. In Germany, however, the public acceptance of fossil fuels and of large industrial projects is in the focus of attention.

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

Much as one hopes to predict whether damaging seismicity might occur somewhere in the next shift, this is not possible at present. Recently, an analysis of seismicity at two mines has shown that a small increase in seismicity occasionally occurs before both large and small events. This analysis is extended here to five mines, with the same results. Earthquake seismologists forecast hazard in terms of the average incidence of earthquakes over the last 50 years, adjusted on an hourly basis according to the possibility of aftershocks of events that have happened. The rate of seismicity in any area remains approximately constant when expressed as seismicity per area mined, or better still, per unit of elastic strain energy released. It is suggested that seismic hazard in mines be estimated using historical seismicity and forward modelling, adjusted according to the possibility of aftershocks. In summary, medium-term forecasting of seismicity is viable; short-term prediction of large events is not.

"The geology of the Ore Fault Ni-Cu deposit has been reinterpreted in the light of recent studies of the geology of the Neoarchean Bird River Sill Complex and the occurrence of economic Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralization. The Ni-Cu sulfides are hosted by the lower of two parallel NNW-trending and moderately W-dipping mafic-ultramafic intrusions related to the Bird River Sill Complex. The bod¬ies intruded a bimodal volcanic suite consisting of weakly deformed mafic flows and felsic pyroclastic rocks. The mafic volcanic rocks are geochemically related to the MORB-type rocks of the Lamprey Falls Formation, and the felsic volcanic rocks are related to arc-type rocks of the Peterson Creek Formation. The original pyroxene- and olivine-dominated mineralogy of the sills has been replaced by variable ser¬pentine-amphibole-talc-carbonate assemblages.The Ni-Cu sulfide assemblage exhibits textures and geochemical signatures typical of orthomagmatic sulfide mineralization. The sulfide minerals are associated with cumulate layers of magnetic ferrochromite that range in thickness from a few to tens of centimeters. A later event of Zn-Cu-Ag sulfide mineralization associated with quartz veining and garnet-chlorite alteration along a fault that strikes north, dips vertically, and cuts all rock types. The mineralized fault is cut by the NE-trending Peterson Creek shear zone. Where the Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralized zones intersect, remnant magmatic features such as amphibolite or cumulate ferrochromite bands occur within quartz veins or local chlorite alteration. The mixed zones contain a very unusual polymetallic assemblage of Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, and platinum group elements (PGE)."

In recent years the Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Pile industry has seen a substantial increase in the quality control options available to Contractors, Engineers, and Owners. Quality control methods range from the simple, manual techniques that have been used for years to new computerized installation monitoring equipment and nondestructive testing methods. Our ability to monitor and test ACIP piles has grown to such a degree that the industry is struggling to determine how much quality control is enough. This paper reviews the many options available and describes the pros and cons of each. The various nondestructive testing methods, in particular, have been difficult to apply reliably due to misapplications of methods and misinterpretation of the results. ACIP piles have unique properties that require the various nondestructive testing methods available be considered very carefully in determining the method most appropriate for a particular use. Some nondestructive testing methods, as well as automated monitoring equipment, potentially can be applied effectively to increase the level of quality control for ACIP piles. The experience gained on real projects using these new methods, in conjunction with the old procedures, provides valuable information for future applications.

The Bureau of Mines investigated hot-rolling and forging characteristics of experimental ductile iron castings, both sand and permanent-mold, made with charges containing up to 70 pct foundry pig iron and 95 pct steelmaking pig iron. Between 1,550° and 1,950° F, most castings could be rolled to 90-pct reduction or forged to 70-pct reduction without serious cracking. Charge and composition have less bearing on workability than on subsequent properties. Permanent mold castings could be worked as readily as sand castings at 1,750° and 1,950° F. Plasticity improved with temperature. Small billets were also forged cold to 50-pct reduction without cracking. With equivalent nodularity, composition affects properties of wrought materials by altering matrix structure and strength. Properties vary with reduction and improve with increasing working temperature. Rolled material has high strength and anisotropy, and low ductility, particularly in the trans-verse direction. Annealing reduces strength and improves ductility, but anisotropy persists. At 70-pct reduction, impact resistance in the longitudinal direction is about twice that in the transverse. Annealing roughly doubles impact resistance. Deformation enhances damping capacity. The feasibility of die-forging and bar-rolling of ductile iron was evaluated in trial tests conducted under a Bureau contract. Although workability and ductility of ductile iron are inferior to those of steel, more advantage could be taken of ductile iron's plasticity to work rough shapes to final dimensions.

Block caving methods, when operated under favourable rock mass conditions, can achieve higher production rates and lower operating costs than other various existing underground mining applications. For this reason, it has been considered the preferred method for the mining of deep and large orebodies in current and future operations around the world. One of the key aspects in the design of block caves is the selection of the production level layout, which, among other parameters, is based on the gravity flow characteristics of the caved rock. This is because gravity flow has a large impact on total ore recovery and the amount of dilution in a caving operation. Today, there are a number of computer based methods which aim to emulate the gravity flow pattern of the caved rock. In this paper, the authors present the development of FlowSiman improved model of gravity flow based on the cellular automaton approach, to estimate dilution entry, mixing and ore recovery. As part of the model development, flow simulations were conducted and subsequently compared to full-scale data collected at two mine sectors operated by Codelco Chile. The results indicate that by using proper calibrated parameters, good correlations between simulated and measured grades as well as dilution entry are obtained. The potential use of the numerical tool to evaluate drawpoint spacing in terms of recovery and dilution for block/panel caving operations is also presented.
