The smelting of copper sulphide concentrate is the dominant route in copper production (Figure 1). Heap leaching of oxidized copper ores with weak sulphuric acid together with copper solvent extraction and electrowinning has gained popularity during recent decades, and it accounts for close to 20 % of primary copper production. Heap leaching offers advantages such as lower costs and consequently the construction of a production plant at a mine site is made possible. Limited resources of oxidized copper ores, the long leaching time of chalcopyrite and inability to recover gold inhibit this growth. The HydroCopperTM process developed by Outokumpu Technology at the laboratories of Outokumpu Research, Pori, Finland, is a new chloride leaching technology /1,2/, which offers an alternative to smelting and heap leaching (Figure 1). In the HydroCopperTM process sulphidic concentrates with various mineralogy and grade can be treated at the mine site to produce high-quality copper. Instead of copper cathodes the HydroCopperTM end products are copper wire rod, copper bars or copper billets. One of the advantages of HydroCopperTM technology is that gold can also be recovered in the process simultaneously /3/. To confirm the functioning of the new process and to dimension equipment Outokumpu Technology built the HydroCopperTM demonstration plant in Pori, Finland /4/. It has a capacity of 1 metric ton of copper per day. After testing with Pyhäsalmi copper concentrate in 2003, the first commercial demonstration run with Erdenet copper concentrate took place in 2004.

"Commissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The CDS plant treats the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This installation enables the existing facility to reduce their sulphur emissions by over 90%.Proper planning of the different commissioning stages and staffing an integrated team are the most important factors required for a successful plant start-up. A strong Operational Readiness plan must be in place as early as the start of construction in order to ensure a smooth transition from commissioning to operations. Plant performance can meet or exceed performance criteria within the required timeframe if the proper group dynamic and good communication is established between construction, commissioning and operations teams.The road blocks encountered are often from systems that one assumes will operate without trouble such as air-conditioning, or design assumptions that were taken years earlier in feasibility process stages, namely the capacity of existing systems that will connect the new plant to the existing facilities. The challenges associated with rectifying these issues in addition to the requirements to properly start-up and operate a new plant without impacting production are great, and it is imperative to have the necessary resources to react quickly to any problems.IntroductionCommissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The combined, de-dusted off-gas from multiple kilns is sent to the CDS, which acts as an entrained fluid bed, where the gas is contacted with a water mist, re-circulated solids and hydrated lime. The SO2 from the gas stream and the available calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the hydrated lime dissolve in the water and react to ultimately form calcium sulphites and gypsum. The solid residue (referred to as CDS residue), is the primary by-product of the process."

"This paper summarizes research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns (froth structure and colour) from industrial flotation froths is discussed.First, the froth was analysed by the use of the Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was applied to develop the empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using one industrial case study.Second, the froth was also analysed by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths.Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses a reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained with the implemented control strategy are highlighted.Finally, the feasibility to implement a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe development of control strategies to achieve satisfactory control performance has always been a great challenge for engineers and the need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimization has become more and more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decades. That is why new process variables need to be measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This industrial process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and/or chemical ore characteristics and also, due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures. Equivalent elastic properties of discontinuously jointed rock masses are computed using a non-representative volume element(NRVE) approach within a three dimensional finite element program. Joint persistence, defined as the percentage of a joint plane that is actually occupied by joint material, is used in the NRVE computations as a step towards greater realism in stability analysis of mine openings. Persistence p is also the probability that a segment of a joint plane is occupied by joint material. Computations reveal a threshold phenomenon in jointed rock mass moduli similar to that observed in percolation theory. A rapid decrease in moduli occurs above a critical value pc(about 0.6). A detailed analysis of the well-known solution for stress about a circular opening in isotropic, elastic ground illustrates the effects of joint set orientation, spacing and persistence. Although stable “on average”, joint segment failures reveal a threat to stability and point towards rational design of reinforcement or support of discontinuously jointed rock masses.

The Ladolam deposit lies within the altered volcanic rocks of the caldera floor, part of which now forms Luise Harbour. It was discovered in 1982 in the course of a reconnaissance drainage sediment sampling programme. This was designed to follow up indications of surface hydrothermal activity noted by Government geologists during an earlier survey of the Tabar-Feni island chain. Diamond drilling began in September 1983 and by the end of 1989 a payable and proved mineable reserve containing 19 million ounces of gold had been established. Rock types and structures are masked at the surface by intense alteration and weathering. An extensive drilling programme has enabled the identification of these features and the relationships between them necessary for an understanding of the factors controlling gold mineralisation. It has also led to the recognition of two distinct phases of alteration. The first phase of porphyry-style potassic alteration was followed by violent caldera formation, producing extensive brecciation and veining. The second alteration phase partly over- printed the first phase and was an epithermal one, evidenced by argillic, advanced argillic and phyllic assemblages. During this event, a large volume of fluids circulated under the favourable structural conditions; these fluids included a sulphur- rich, neutral chloride brine believed to have transported the gold. Boiling and mixing of circulating fluids in the open breccias is thought to have resulted in deposition of the gold. There is evidence that this process is continuing at the present day.

Since 2007, a number of Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC) Applications have been implemented on SAG mills, among others, within the Kairos Mining Concentrator Automation Program using ?Profit Controller?? and other tools comprising the ?Profit Suite??. Along this journey, several interesting and challenging issues related to SAG mill operation and control have been faced, which are relevant to be shared with the Mineral Processing community. These advanced control applications have an operational objective whose goal is to increase marginal profit on the concentrator, together with increasing mill stability. In regard to this objective, the issues to be presented and described are in direct relationship with ?Profit Controller? features and the SAG role; they are also stated and linked to get the most of the mill. Some conclusions and findings are also presented, leading to recommended practices on how to use the controller. These findings have also lead us to decide further actions to be taken on new applications to deploy and also on devising and implementing some complementary components to increase robustness of the overall automation solution, as well as reducing the need for operator intervention.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The British Geological Survey's regional geochemical database is used to identify the patterns associated with the various mineral deposit types and to examine the extent to which their distribution reflects the presence of long-lived metallogenic provinces in the crust. Image analysis provides new insights into the setting of the mineralisation, geochemical constraints on tectonic models of Caledonide evolution and evidence for terrane amalgamation and large-scale processes. There is evidence that much of the mineralisation reflects the presence of long-lived provinces with a distinctive geochemistry reflecting their origins as zones of crustal extension. In the case of the Middle-Upper Dalradiam sedex deposits, the relationship between geochemistry and tectonic setting is direct. In other cases, rocks deposited in extensional zones appear to have acted as reservoirs of ore-forming elements which were further concentrated during later events

An equation derived from first-order kinetics and accounting for return from froth to pulp has correlated continuous flotation data. The concentration of floatable material in the pulp can be altered either by changing the feed concentration or the feed rate. The latter does not affect the flotation rate constant, the froth to pulp return constant, and the concentration of non-floatable material in both the pulp and concentrate. Both the return constant and the concentration of non-floatable material in the pulp are directly proportional to the feed concentration, while the concentration of non-floatable material in the concentrate is related to the feed concentration. The investigation of the froth flotation process by continuous test methods, previously used by Brown and smith,1 Jowett and Safvi2 and Jowett and West,3 is being continued. Recent tests, primarily concerned with flotation cell design, have yielded kinetic data suitable for testing an equation proposed by Arbiter and Harris4 which postulates that a flotation process is defined by two rate constants: 1) the rate constant for mass transfer from pulp to froth. Previous workers have regarded this as the flotation rate constant. 2) the rate constant for mass transfer from froth to pulp, which has previously been ignored. The extraction of copper(II) from sulphate solution was investigated using LIX®984N in kerosene. The parameters that could affect the extraction, such as equilibrium pH, extractant concentration, salt concentration, various diluents, and temperature, were separately investigated. On the basis of slope analysis, the complex formed in the organic phase is proposed to be CuR2, where R is the anionic part of LIX®984N. The extraction equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy ( G) of the extraction process were determined. The positive value of H obtained from temperature variation studies showed that the extraction process is endothermic. The extraction of copper was lowest when chloroform was used as the diluent. Separation and recovery of copper from a synthetic copper-nickel solution containing 6.35 g/L Cu(II) and 0.58 g/L Ni(II) was carried out using 20%(v/v) LIX® 984N. The separation factor ( = DCu/DNi) was found to be pH-dependent. A two-stage batch countercurrent extraction was carried out at an O:A ratio of 3:4 at equilibrium pH 1.05 for extraction of copper from copper-nickel solution, followed by copper stripping from the loaded organic phase with 15% H2SO4 at an O:A ratio of 3:1.

Longwall management, regular shield maintenance, and evaluation of ground control problems can be performed using real-time shield monitoring program. Based on real-time shield pressure data, evaluation of intensity and interval of periodic weighting, estimation of time-dependent pressure increase and the effects of geologic anomalies can be obtained. In this study, full-face shield pressure data of over 457 m (1,500 feet) of face advancement is analyzed to evaluate shield response in the presence of surface lineaments, floor undulations, and multiple main roofs. Shield pressure increase due to web cutting is also correlated with setting pressure during periodic weighting and normal time. In addition, time-dependent pressure increase rate on Sundays and holidays is also correlated with time average pressure and the location of previous periodic weighting.

Fully resin encapsulated threaded bar and cement grouted cable bolts are common forms of reinforcement for underground mining excavations constructed at great depth. These elements are frequently installed to dissipate the dynamic loads caused by violent rock mass failure mechanisms. Failure of the ground support scheme without rupture of the reinforcement elements implies that the maximum energy dissipation capacity of the scheme was not utilised. The ground support damage mechanisms are useful to identify in this context as they reveal vulnerabilities which limit the scheme performance. This paper presents a number of field observations of reinforcement performance following a range of dynamic loading conditions. It was observed that fully resin encapsulated threaded bars exhibit variable behaviour. In particular, inconsistent resin encapsulation was frequently observed in combination with surface support failure, indicating that the retention function of these elements may allow preferential loading of the surface support system. Observations of cement grouted, twin-strand plain cable bolts reveal a common mode of damage involving differential displacement across the steel-grout interface and slip of the cable within the borehole. This is common where strands are not mutually tensioned with barrel and wedge assemblies. Surface fixtures that exceed the strength capacity of the cable strand are required in order to minimise the occurrence of this response. Improved load transfer from the rock mass and surface support to the cable can thus be achieved, particularly where small block size failure occurs.CITATION:Drover, C and Villaescusa, E, 2016. Underground miners are exposed to some of the highest levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the United States. Therefore, it is important to monitor the exposure of miners to DPM, but it can be difficult because of the complex composition of DPM and the number of interferences. Currently, elemental carbon (EC) is used as a surrogate because it makes up a significant fraction of the DPM and is not affected by interferences. Standard measurement methods for EC can be time consuming and only record end of shift results. In this research, a laser absorption technique that enables one to measure EC concentration in near real time was shown to be a beneficial tool. The real time data showed that the fresh air being drawn into a stone mine was not properly reaching the working area and needed to be redirected to decrease DPM concentrations. The real time data also provided a more accurate efficiency ofan environmental cab compared to just using the standard method by detecting the opening of the cab's window and door. The EC optical monitor was also worn by researchers in a mine to show how it can give not only the average concentration for the shift but also reveal when and where a miner is exposed to DPM. Drilling for roof bolting has created a new dust problem for the coal-mining industry. Drilling is inherently dusty, and control of dust produced by drilling vertical or nearly vertical holes is much more difficult than control of that produced by drilling flat or down holes.4/ Also, the dust produced by roof drilling differs in composition from that produced by drill-fur, or cutting the coal face because it contains a significantly greater amount of free silica and therefore presents a greater potential hazard of silicosis. Roof bolting has been practiced successfully in the mines of the St. Joseph Lead Co. in southeastern Missouri for over 20 years, but it was not until 1947 and 1948 that large-scale roof-bolting experiments were conducted in coal mines.5/ Although the need for dust control in conjunction with roof drilling was recognized from the beginning, the development and acceptance of roof bolting progressed so rapidly during 1949 and 1950 that solution of the dust problem lagged behind other engineering phases of the technique.

This paper summarises the development t,) date for the Hidden Valley Gold (HVG) Project. It starts with the original exploration work, covers the detailed feasibility study activities and concludes with the current phase of extra exploration drilling. A brief technical summary has been made from the various mining, process and environmental studies that were undertaken as part of the project approval process. A discussion of the influential non-technical factors is included, as well as a view of the future prospects for an operating mine. The project was always seen as marginal, given the low grades, small resource and short mine life. However the capital and operating costs were lowered with aggressive design and it was regarded an acceptable development by CRA. The opportunity was taken to review the project when delays in start-up were encountered. An updated financial evaluation showed a subeconomic resource in 1990 terms and this resulted in a new exploration phase to identify a larger deposit.

The dynamic response of holdup in a continuous ball mill has a direct influence on the rate function of grinding kinetics and is useful for predicting the variation in the size distribution of the finished product with time.A model was proposed involving three interacting, completely mixed chambers and this was used to derive analytically the transfer function of the system, from which the unit impulse response and the unit step response of the holdup with feed rate were obtained.The theory was confirmed by comparing it with previously published experimental data for the residence time distribution of particles passing through a ball mill.

This work investigates the effect of waste plastics addition on the reduction of iron oxide by sawdust. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing sawdust (SD), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and blends of SD/HDPE were fired under argon in a horizontal tube furnace at temperatures between 1300 and 1500 °C. Reduced samples were weighed after 10 minutes of reduction and the extent of reduction was calculated from the measured oxygen contents of the compact. The results showed improved extent of reduction when SD was blended with HDPE. The highest extent of reduction was achieved at SD:HDPE ratio of 2:3.

The Somita plant processes low sulphide gold ore in Burkina Faso with a CIL process. After experiencing recurrent low gold recoveries, Somita undertook an investigation on the source of the problem. COREM conducted a mineralogical study on different pit samples. A series of tests was also conducted on a composite sample from the plant which shows a content of 3.4 g/t in gold and 0.48 % in graphite. A reference test in laboratory resulted in a recovery of gold of 75%, similar to plant recoveries for the evaluated ore. In these tests, even if cyanide is not deficient, it was diverted mainly into iron cyanide complex, copper cyanide complexes and by graphite adsorption. Causes of low recovery were also identified and quantified. Solutions to increase gold recovery were suggested such as increasing gold dissolution kinetics by O2 or by lead nitrate addition, change in activated carbon addition point location to the 1st cyanidation tank and finer grinding to increase liberation. Increase in the pH could also contribute to reduce cyanidation consumption. Following these recommendations, Somita changed carbon addition from tank 2 to tank 1 in the CIL circuit. This change led to an increase of more than 5% in gold recovery. A system for the addition of lead nitrate is also under implementation at the plant and benefit will be evaluated in 2013. Finally, pit management for cyanidation will be done based on mineralogy instead of gold content in the future.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Thomson Orogen is a large but poorly understood element of Queensland geology. Extensive cover conceals the Thomson Orogen at depth, thus limiting studies to a small number of surface exposures. Previous studies of the northern Thomson Orogen have been restricted to the largest of these exposures in the Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Less extensive exposures, including Mt McLaren in east-central Queensland, are largely overlooked and poorly documented. Fieldwork suggests that Mt McLaren is a west-tilted fault block of Thomson Orogen metasediments that are at least 2200 m thick. The substantial thickness of these sediments (which we have named the Mt McLaren Formation) and the consistent shallow marine facies throughout the block suggest deposition in an actively subsiding basin. Initial dating of detrital zircons places deposition of the Mt McLaren Formation in the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, allowing correlations with formations of similar composition and age in the nearby Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Both of these areas have a long history of mining and exploration for gold and base metals, suggesting that correlation of basement sequences across these areas could be beneficial for exploration models of the Thomson Orogen as well as for tectonic models of eastern Australia.CITATION:Lee, M, Verdel, C, Welsh, K and Oorloff, A, 2015. A series of full scale laboratory linear rock cutting tests was carried out with a long bladed single disc cutter (292 mm diameter, 11mm wide constant cross-section blade) on dry and water saturated sandstone blocks using a linear rock cutting machine (LRCM). The muck collected from the cutting tests has been analyzed to establish a link with the specific energy (SE) of the operation. Coarseness index (CI), a non dimensional parameter, has been found to be a useful indicator of the relative efficiency of the cutting operation. An inverse relationship of the form SE = k CI-n is observed between SE and CI with very high CI usually corresponding with the lowest values of SE. The power n of the relationship for both dry and saturated rock tests is much less than the values found in the previous studies using constant cross section disc cutters and is believed to be dependent on the strength of the rock and the cutter type used. Although the average CI is found to be lower for saturated rock than for dry rock, at the same time saturated rock cutting is found to be less energy intensive (in terms of SE) than dry rock cutting. Moderate correlation exists between the production rate or yield and the SE of the cutting operation for both dry and saturated rock, which can provide some useful information about the field production rate discounting the effect of discontinuities in the rock mass.
