"The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) has recently obtained a Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). CAMP has utilized the technology for several projects with excellent results. The MLA is able to both analyze size and quantify mineral phases. Therefore, the MLA is becoming the Sherlock Holmes of the mining and metallurgical industry. For this presentation, four projects have been evaluated and data was collected using the MLA. The first project involved tungsten mine. Previous mining practices have yielded poor tungsten results and recoveries. By using the MLA, tungsten mineral phases, along with possible contaminants, were verified and the results used to try to increase overall tungsten recoveries. The second project evaluated a molybdenite/chalcopyrite concentrate with surprising results. The third project is a silver project. Initial flotation scoping tests were performed by attempting to separate silver from gangue material. Because of the poor recovery results (less than 5%), MLA was used to determine possible scenarios for increasing silver recovery. Finally, the last project involves gold evaluation in tailings. For all projects, MLA application results will be presentedand discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) has recently received a software add-on to a scanning electron microscope (SEM) located at Montana Tech. The Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) technology was developed by Dr. Ying Gu of the JKTech Center of the University of Queensland. Since August 2006, CAMP has received and processed over 50 samples. These samples include a total mineralogy of tungsten ore samples, gold tailings, lead zinc tailings pile, molybdenite concentrates, copper concentrates, as well as others. During analysis of these received samples, the technology allows the samples to be quantified mineralogically with some surprising results.For analysis, the samples were initially sieved between 170 to 200 screen sized mesh. This ensures that received samples mineral size is fairly uniform. The samples are then placed into epoxy and allowed to harden. Next, the samples are polished and carbon coated for MLA analysis."

This report is intended as a reference for personnel interested in the computer anlaysis of coal-mine-electrical-power systems under either normal operating conditions or fault situations. The procedures developed for this purpose are described and implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Considerations for choosing a solution technique and a number of examples are included. Procedures described include the Newton-Raphson iterative technique for the analysis of normal operation as well as a non-iterative Z-bus technique for analysis of unbalanced or balanced faults. During program development, strict attention has been given to the inclusion of core and/or time saving techniques such that these algorithms may be implemented on small as well as large computers. Program languages include FORTRAN IV for batch processing applications and APL or BASIC for interactive applications.

A wide-ranging base of jig data was collected from various types of commercial jigs in 9 coal preparation plants in China, and a complete data analysis was made. It was found that the sharpness ofseparation was very variable, which demonstrates the complex interplay of the many factors which influence jig performance. Tests showed that there exist optimum frequency ranges in each compartment of a jig. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the sharpness of separation is most sensitive to the intake fraction ofthe air cycle, the frequency, and the feed rate. By means of non-linear curve fitting techniques and statistical analysis, several mathematical models were developed to describe both partition curve and the jig performance, for simulation purposes.

In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9 ), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The porosity and. permeability of limestone formations seldom are uniform throughout the proved area, consequently the production capacities of completed wells vary considerably. Acid treatment of wells tends to increase production capacity and to equalize potential capacity. FOR rapidly marking in geological and topographical features on parish plans, the author has used the Veeder cyclometer with very satisfactory results. A simple Veeder cyclometer, usually retailed at cycle depots at 4s., is fixed to the axle of the front wheel of an ordinary bicycle. The cyclometer is desigued to read in miles and tenths of miles, which are recorded through gearing actuated by a striker on a spoke of the bicycle wheel engaging one of the vanes of the cyclometer once every revolution.By using 80 strikers the reading would be in chains and tenths of chains; therefore the use of 8 strikers gives the reading in chains, utilizing all the figures. The cyclometer is designed to be placed on the right-hand side of the bicycle, and takes up a minimum of space, being only about the size of the top joint of the thumb. With some makes of cycles there is insufficient clearance, so the cyclometer must then be placed on the left side, and the 8 strikers made to engage the top vanes, as shown in the sketch (Fig. 1).Very accurate readings can be obtained by this instrument. Underground mining is a dynamic art and science with a diverse set of design, production, and economic criteria that must be considered before selecting an optimal method to extract the ore. While all methods can be technically classified as either self-supported, supported, or caving, the multitude of subsystems and existing variations bear witness to the fact that each orebody is unique and, as such, justifies an individual approach to optimize mineral extraction. In this sense, underground mining is an art. The ability to evaluate the unique characteristics of each ore body and utilize sound engineering principles to design the optimal system constitutes effective method selection. The task by no means ends at this juncture, however. Subsequent implementation requires an ability for modification. Very rarely are all the facts available to make a concrete decision prior to development of the resource. As a result, the risk of a wrong decision can never be eliminated. This requires a significant degree of flexibility with each method. Each unit of exploration, development, or exploitation work contributed to a deposit enhances knowledge of the ore body. The best mining methods are those that correctly account for the known parameters but provide an allowance for change at minimal cost and adapt to unanticipated conditions.

The geologist is often called upon to give judgment on the possibilities of reviving a former mining field presumably worked out as far as the evidence then available indicated. From time to time, scarcity and consequent high prices of metals has led to there-examination of many old fields. The possibility of resuming investigation on them where the practical miner ceased work, even where he had the aid of the trained geologist, has long since disappeared.Means of access to mines have been removed and water fills the workings. Hence an indirect mode of attack becomes essential.This method depends mainly on past history, and may be described as a reaching out by faith supported by shrewd guessing from the known to the unknown. Apart from whatever general intelligent observations may be made in situ of the evidence of former mining activity, the method depends largely on the examination of the past history of the field as revealed in the official records, company reports, plans of underground workings, local newspaper accounts, and the testimony of practical miners formerly employedon the field, the' reliability of which has to be carefully sifted. The matter derived from the examination of these sources must next be rigorously collated and correlated where possible. When the review of all individu!1l features and aspects has been completed, tentative and speculative conclusions may be drawn which, though not verifiable before the event, will usually prove to be more serviceable guides in exploratory operations than mere "blind stabbing."As an actual illustration of what is involved in the mode of procedure outlined above, the following is the description of an investigation in which the writer took part.In 1937, during the course of the Commonwealth Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, a detailed geological investigation was undertaken of the Croydon gold field, situated near the south-eastern. extremity of the Gulf of Carpentaria in North Queensland.The history of the field briefly is as follows: It was discovered in 1885, reached its peak of production 1896, declining thereafter till 1906, when operations ceased. The total production was about 1,000,000 ounces of gold bullion, containing approximately 40 per cent. of silver. The gold bullion was won from flat-dipping quartz reefs, which yielded an average of 2.oz. to the ton, and the maximum depth to which production occurred was 500 feet. Subsequent prospecting below this depth failed to locate further ore.In consequence of the inaccessibility of the mines and the almost total masking of the' surface by alluvium, the investigation of future possibilities became largely an. office ,study, which was conducted under the following headings:-1. New Zealand has often been quoted by metallurgists and others as one of the countries in which Tellurium is found, and locally it has been recorded that appreciable quantities of tellurium have been met with in the Thames and surroundingdistricts. However, specimens containing tellurium which have been obtained on this field have not been preserved and their scarcity today points to the fact that tellurium is not here abundant.To ascertain its distribution, analyses and assays have been made by the author on a large number of ores, the results of several of which are given below.The presence of any considerable percentage of tellurium has an important bearing on the metallurgical treatment of ores in which it is found.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore has replaced the conventional product quality control batch system at Yandi with the Continuous Stockpile Management System (CSMS) centred on a fully integrated æcontinuousÆ stockpile flow from mine planning through to port reclaiming. With increasing tonnage rates, tight operational coupling associated with the original batch system caused production interference which achieved final product quality but in an increasingly inefficient manner. This innovative approach places a continuous emphasis on product grade control and takes full advantage of the most appropriate blending opportunities of the mine to port planning and production system in order to reduce the natural variability of the ore to an acceptable level. To implement continuous control, product variability throughout the process is classified as long-term and short-term. Long-term variability is best controlled through the monthly mine planning process which determines monthly grade targets while taking into account optimum mine development. In the past, attempts to control long-term variability were made at the port through selective stockpiling and reclaiming which reduced operational efficiency. Short-term variability is best controlled around the monthly mine grade target by daily mine production scheduling, train sequencing, stacking into port stockpiles of appropriate size and systematical stockpile reclaiming. The implementation of the new system has maintained customer accepted shipping grades and has provided significant improvements in resource utilisation, operational efficiencies and costs.

"The Mazowe Gold Mine is managed by Metallon Gold (Zimbabwe) and is situated in the west-central part of the Harare greenstone belt. Orebodies here generally comprise shear zones which are in-filled with gold-bearing sulphides and quartz. The mineralised zones are up to 1 m in width, have average grades of 4 to 5 g/t, and mostly dip between 10º and 60º to the north.Mazowe Mine is one of the oldest mines in Zimbabwe, and exploration and development in this region dates back to 1890, with over 1.4 million ounces of gold produced to date. Mazowe mine comprises two underground operations, Mazowe and the BSV sections. Ore is processed in a single plant which consists of conventional crushing and milling and carbon-in-leach facility.Baldmin Projects was awarded the contract for the design, construction and commissioning of the 60,000 tonnes per month plant at Mazowe mine in 2014 for the processing of sand and slimes tailings from previous operations at Mazowe mine. The average grade of the tailings is 1.1 g/t. The plant consists of feed preparation, grinding, flotation, thickening of flotation concentrate, and carbon in leach (CIL). A pump station for hydraulic mining of the slimes tailings dam also part of the plant.Key features of the Mazowe sands Plant are described and include:• Hydraulic mining of gold tailings dump.• Feed preparation section that includes a (W x L) 2.4 m wide x 4.8 m trash screen, 250 m3 surge tank, a cluster cyclones with 2 x 500 mm diam. Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The objectives of the Continuous Shaft Lining (CSL) System are to reduce the costs, safety hazards, and time currently required in lining mine shafts with concrete. The CSL will line machine bored shafts downward from the shaft collar on a continuous basis using an inverted, pressurized slipforming technique. The technique for slip-forming downwards has been demonstrated and refined under this program. The approach taken involved laboratory scale testing of key features of the CSL concept. These feature tests included concrete distribution, concrete sealing, concrete slipforming and development of a reliable concrete mix. Based on these results, a full scale above-ground test facility and CSL were designed and fabricated. The objectives of these tests were to demonstrate the viability of the basic concept; to establish operating limits; and to provide input data and information for the design of a second generation shaft lining system. The results of the program have led to a CSL design and operational philosophy which will need to be tested in an underground environment before industry will accept the technology. However, the next generation CSL promises to meet all the original program technical objectives.

The event, billed as the world’s largest mining equipment exhibition, is set for Sept. 27-30at the Las Vegas Convention Center. MINExpo, sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), is held every four years in Las Vegas, NV. This year’s event is expected to attract more than 40,000 mining industry professionals and executives from around the world. And several key members of the U.S. Congress and other senior government officials are expected to attend. In addition, senior industry and government officials from Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa and South America will be on hand.

Graphite occurs in many places in the United States, but previous to 1914 the domestic production amounted to only 15 to 20 per cent of the natural graphite consumed in this country. Including artificial, graphite, the proportion was about 25 per cent. During the World War the production of both natural and artificial graphite increased until, in 1918 it, contributed more than one-half of the available supply, and since 1919 the proportion has not fallen below 40 per cent. Except during the war period, however, this apparently increasing independence has not been due to any large increase in production from domestic mines. It simply reflects a larger output of artificial graphite and reduced imports of Ceylon lung and chip, grades which have never been produced in substantial quantity in the United States. DOMESTIC DEPOSITS3 American graphite deposits, though numerous and often large, are characteristically low-grade. They constitute an abundant source of potential supply, but in normal times they have proved relatively costly to work, and even at the same price the various products have never been able wholly to displace certain imported qualities, notably crucible grades from Ceylon and pencil graphite from Mexico.

Alluvial gold was discovered on Sudest Island in 1888, and by 1893, an official production of 10 000 oz had been won by expatriate miners from shallow alluvial and colluvial workings. Hardrock sources were located and while one was developed at Mt Adelaide, production is unknown. Sudest Island comprises mostly phyllites and lesser coarse grained rocks which are cut by metamorphic quartz veins and basic (locally shoshonitic) intrusives. Sheared and altered basalts and serpent- inites represent are believed to be elements of an ophiolitic suite inferred to be associated with metamorphic core complex development and thus similar to tectonic environments on Misima and the D'Entrec- asteaux Islands. No epithermal-style quartz suggestive of a target similar to that on Misima Island has been identified on Sudest. A hardrock source for the alluvial and colluvial gold is interpreted to be metamorphic quartz veins similar to those in the Bendigo- Ballarat Zone of central Victoria, possibly remobilising gold derived from the meta- sedimentary and meta-igneous rock pile. The present focus is on development of a small scale alluvial gold mining operation in conjunction with exploration for hardrock targets. This latter programme remains at a reconnaissance stage.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation exploiting a diluted reserve of 131 million tonnes grading 1.06 per cent copper and 0.81 g/t gold in the lower portion of the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). The EESS is a calcium-magnesium silicate skarn containing in excess of 250 million tonnes of copper-gold ore, located in the Ertsberg Mining District on the crest of the Jawawijaya mountain range in the highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The EESS was discovered in 1968 where it cropped out at an elevation of 4050 metres above sea level. The Ertsberg Mining District is underlain by siliclastic carbonate and siltstone formations of Jurassic to Tertiary age. The sediments have been folded and are cut by major bedding subparallel and crosscutting structures. Intrusion of a series of igneous bodies post-dates folding and faulting. These I-type intrusions are the source for the copper-gold mineralisation found in the Ertsberg Mining District. The EESS is hosted by carbonates of the Tertiary Waripi and Faumai Formations that have been altered to calcium-magnesium silicate skarn and is situated on the southern limb of a northwest-trending syncline. The EESS is an essentially vertical tabular body with a vertical extent of at least 1200 metres and a lateral extent of up to 1000 metres. The width of the EESS averages 200 metres and locally is in excess of 300 metres. The northeast (hangingwall) contact of the EESS is a skarn reaction front in sudden contact with barren marbles. This contact coincides with a zone of localised faulting and brecciation. The EESS is bounded to the southwest (footwall) by the Ertsberg Diorite, a 3.25 Ma old intrusive. The DOZ block cave operation extends from 3040 metres above sea level to a maximum of 3388 metres above sea level, has a length of 860 metres and a maximum width of 350 metres. The DOZ is a high temperature skarn with a prograde forsterite/diopside mineralogy whose protolith is the dolomitic Tertiary Waripi Formation. The principal retrograde alteration minerals include tremolite, actinolite, serpentine, talc and chlorite. Grade is highest where bornite occurs in large dense complex intergrowths with magnetite and anhydrite. Grade has been locally enhanced in the DOZ by a late-stage pyrite-chalcopyrite hydrothermal alteration event with associated brecciation. Ertsberg Diorite along the footwall of the skarn is also included in the reserve where it is mineralised endoskarn or has been mineralised by porphyrytic or late stage hydrothermal alteration. Formation of the EESS was initiated by contact metamorphism during the intrusion of the Ertsberg Diorite with later metasomatic alteration during both prograde and retrograde phases. The bulk of sulphide mineralisation formed late in the retrograde phase. The EESS is open along strike to the northwest and down-dip with on-going exploration of these areas. Current exploration is targeting both endoskarn and porphyry style alteration and mineralisation of the Ertsberg Diorite.

In gold ores, the range of value disclosed by ordinary mine sampling is very wide, and the number of 'samples required for a reliable average is correspondingly great. Even where a large number of samples is available the weighted mean value of the samplesalmost invariably exceeds the true gold content. In operating mines this disparity is overcome by arbitrary reduction of high assays until reconciliation is achieved, but it is frequently necessary, especIallyin exploration, to base an estimate or to reach a decision on a relatively small number of samples from underground openings or even on a few drill hole intersections. In these circumstances, a decisive influence may be exercised by the weight allowed to high assays and to low grade intersections, both of which events are, of course, dependent on the metal distribution in the ore. Where sufficient data are available, statistical analysis will measure the risk involved, but as this information is seldom to be had, the final choice becomes largely a matter of personal judgment.With this problem in mind, a study was made some years ago of the distribution of values in four Western Australian gold ores, with the primary purpose of learning from actual ore-bodies of differing types, something of the metal distribution in the smallquantities of ore involved in individual routine mine samples, and of the importance in each case of high assays. Adequate and suitable data were available in .four cases, in three of which high assays were of frequent occurrence due to the presence of free gold. The results give concrete expression to well known differences of metal distribution, and it is proposed, firstly to record the observed distribution; secondly to examine some of the consequences of the differences in the distributions limd thirdly, to comment, in the light of this data, on the vexed question of the treatment of high assays. Standard statistical procedure was employed in the compilation of the data. The assays were classified by value into groups, each group covering a range of value of 1 dwt. per ton. Assays of less than 1.0 dwt. per ton form the first group; assays equal to or greater than 1.0 dwt. and less than 2.0 dwt. comprise the second group; those equal to or greater than 2.0 dwt. and less than 3.0 dwt. appear in the third group; and so on. Where the number of samples is large, it can be assumed that the mid-value of the group is the mean value of all the samples in the group, thus the mean values of the first three groups are 0.5 dwt., 1.5 dwt. and 2.5 dwt. respectively.The number of samples in the group is the frequency of the group, but for convenience of plotting this frequency is converted into percentage of all the samples in the series.
