Ion exchange (IX) has been in use for a long time, references to IX are made in The Bible, Exodus Chapter 15 vs. 22-25 ?and the waters were made sweet?.1, 2 Aristotle noted a reduction in the salt content of water when passed through certain types of sand, a phenomena probably associated with ion exchange characteristics of zeolites. Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ? The Committee Bay Greenstone Belt extends over 300km and is one of the largest unexplored greenstone belts in North America with excellent gold and diamond potential. Committee Bay Resources Limited holds over 550,000 acres of land with prospective geology in the Committee Bay area southwest of Melville Peninsula, Nunavut. Committee Bay is a typical Archean greenstone belt comparable to the Yellowknife, Red Lake, Kirkland Lake and other prolific gold belts. Drilling during 2003 at Committee Bay resulted in: 1) the discovery of high-grade gold-bearing quartz veins with silicification and sulphidation at Three Bluffs, and 2) the continuation of high-grade gold mineralization in the hinge area of the iron formation at Inuk. Gold mineralization at Three Bluffs is identified in iron formation and adjacent sediments and has been traced by drilling for over 700m. The Three Bluffs iron formation is open to depth and along strike where is has been traced on surface for over 6km. In January 2004 Committee Bay and joint venture partner Gold Field?s announced a $7.1 million exploration program for the Committee Bay project in 2004. A total of 8,000m in exploration drilling has been approved for the expansion of the Three Bluffs to the resource stage and drilling of at least five new target areas. Additional mapping, sampling and geophysics will be used to identify new gold targets along the very prospective Committee Bay belt.

"Abstract Pile design for building structures in the United States is typically performed by: 1) investigating and assigning engineering parameters to the respective ground bearing materials, 2) calculating ultimate pile to ground (geotechnical) capacity which is then reduced by a Safety Factor deemed appropriate by a registered Design Professional thereby arriving at an allowable pile geotechnical pile capacity, and 3) determining the required pile structural section using allowable pile section material properties. It is advantageous to use a Working Stress Design Method (WSDM) approach as one system of loads (service loads) are used in both the geotechnical and structural evaluation. There are a variety of methods used to determine the ultimate and allowable geotechnical capacity, and Building Codes often require a registered Design Professional to determine the appropriate method(s) and capacities. The International Building Code is the Code typically referenced in building design and construction in the United States. Structural design usually follows Building Code requirements and Allowable Stress Design (ASD) procedures. As design of the overlying structure typically follows a Strength Design Method (SDM) approach using factored loads, in some cases piling is first designed for pile-to-soil interaction using service loads, followed by evaluating the pile geometry for factored loads. Construction is the finalization and implementation of the designed piling. As such, project-specific technical specifications are typically developed by a registered Design Professional such that a project Owner can bid, buy, and instruct a Contractor as to the desired piling work and acceptance criteria. There are several Industry groups, including DFI, PDCA, ADSC, and ACI that provide guidance documents which the registered Design Professional can refer to in developing the piling technical specifications. It is the author’s opinion that the registered Design Professional is best suited to observe and verify the piling installation; many Building Departments require verification and documentation by a registered Professional as a condition of final acceptance.INTRODUCTIONPile design for building structures consists of: investigation, design, specification, and verification. In major metropolitan areas within the United States, Building Codes typically identify minimum requirements for each of the above steps. The International Building Code (ICC, 2012) is the Code typically referenced in building design and construction in the United States. Recognizing the ground conditions as well as piling construction means and methods can vary on a site-by-site basis, latitude is given to the registered Design Professional and Contractor to optimize the piling system for the respective project conditions. Field testing and quality control / assurance measures are typically implemented to verify the design intent is attained for the production pile elements."

The human element in large measure dictates success in contracting relationships. Because of our professional backgrounds, we view contracts primarily as either engineers, contractors or owners. A beneficial contractual environment--one in which decisions, risks and benefits are shared--demands equal consideration of all three points of view. Most of the older cities in the United States, for example, suffer from bad contracts--generalized, patched-together documents that represent an accumulation of modifications originally written to compensate for specific situations that have occurred over the years. Because such documents lack coherence, they often present conflicting instructions which lead to defensive, ultimately destructive attitudes among the parties involved in the day-to-day administration of the project. Good contract development begins with a strong central philosophy to which the details of the contract can be related. First, the owner should establish a comprehensive philosophy in which risks between the parties are identified. Following this, a specific contract document can be written to satisfy this established philosophy. The contrast between two opposed contractual situations, NYC Water Tunnel Number Three and the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant Cooling Water Tunnels, illustrates how comprehensive, well-written contracts--contracts which share both risks and benefits--provide the basis for achieving quality construction that will reward engineer, contractor and owner.

Studies of coal reserves have shown that the total augerable reserve base for the United States is estimated to be five billion tons under the current state of mining technology; the potential reserve base at 850-ft penetration is estimated at 20 billion tons. It is with the idea of improving coal recovery, a basic objective of Project Independence, that new concepts, such as modifications and improvements in current machines and development of ways to recover pillars left by current augering, are required. Unless recovery is improved, these potential reserves amount to lost coal.

It is just over 100 years since the practice of blowing small bubbles into a mixture of ground ore and water revolutionized the mining industry, resulting in uneconomic deposits becoming highlyprofitable mines, along with the inevitable lawsuits over this new technology called froth flotation. To this day, the viability of many mining projects rests largely with the ability of flotation to effectively capture the valuable minerals and reject wastes. Remarkably, bubble behaviour in flotation has not been well understood until very recently with the advent of new sensor technologies that can be brought directly into the operating plants. This presentation will review the importance to the mining industry of understanding bubbles, highlight these new technologies and illustrate, with examples, how paying attention to your bubbles will pay off.

Actualmente el geólogo de mina toma información rutinaria, mapea los bancos de la mina, los taladros para voladura y loguea los núcleos de perforación y fragmentos del aire reverso. Para la localización en el campo utiliza un GPS que tiene una estación en tierra que permite triangular en tiempo real. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia de la función del geólogo y las herramientas de campo que utiliza para la exploración y la definición del modelo geológico en la mina Pierina. Así para la digitalización del mapeo geológico utiliza el programa AutoCad, en el caso de mapeo de taladros para voladura emplea un Colector de Datos que posee una hoja de calculo que permite recoger datos del tipo de alteración, porcentaje de arcillas, dureza y tipo de mineralización. Finalmente, la información que genera el geólogo de mina es útil para diferentes usuarios ya que sirve para mejorar el cálculo de reservas, manejar el control eficiente del minado de mineral y desmonte, así como generar el soporte geológico a los geotecnistas responsables del estudio de estabilidad de taludes del tajo abierto, así como desde el punto de vista ambiental es posible definir zonas con potencial de generar drenaje ácido de rocas.

Roof failures in underground coal mines are related to the lithology and geologic structure of the roof. There are two distinct suites of roof rock above the Herrin (No. 6) Coal in Illinois, and each has distinctive patterns of structure and roof failure. In black shale-limestone roof areas, roof instability is correlated with thinning of limestone beds and presence of faults and clay dikes. In gray shale roof regions, the prime roof hazards are posed by rolls, shear bodies, and presence of coal or carbonaceous partings in the roof. Most structural features examined are believed to have formed during early stages of sediment diagenesis and compaction. Structural trends and lithologic patterns are strongly interdependent for this reason. In many cases geologic patterns are so complex and locally variable that prediction of roof stability far in advance of mining is difficult. The need for greater flexibility in roof control planning is apparent.

The Salt Flat field, formerly called the Toe -Bruner field, is located northeast of the town of Luling in Caldwell County, Tex. This field, which is a fault structure, approximately parallels and is about 5 miles east of the Old Luling field. The proved area is approximately 1,280 acres, on which 332 producing wells (September, 1930) have been drilled. The majority of the wells are producing from the Edwards limestone at an average total depth of 2,700 feet. A few wells are producing from the Austin chalk or from other formations above the Edwards limestone. The Wilcox formation is exposed, and the fault trace in places is scarcely evident. The strike of the structure is approximately 111. 20 to 45° E. The displacement of the fault is probably 200 to 500 feet. The discovery well was completed in the Austin chalk by the Lutex Oil Co. during April, 1928. In October, 1928, the Sun Oil Co. completed the discovery well in the Edwards pay. This well was an important discovery, as it indicated the potential oil possibilities of the Edwards limestone in echelon fault structures. The discovery led to the development of the third fault field in the Edwards limestone and opened up a large area for future prospecting. The total oil production for the Salt Flat field to and including September, 1930, was 19,833,215 barrels. The most reliable figures available of water production were compiled for a number of leases and wells in the south half of the field. These data show that the water percentage for the average well in this part of the field increased steadily from 30 per cent for January, 1929, to 81 per cent for December, 1929. The estimated daily water production of the entire field for December, 1929, was about 82,000 barrels as compared with a daily oil production of 29,725 barrels; or approximately 2.7 barrels of water were produced with each barrel of oil 14 months after the discovery well was completed in the Edwards pay. Estimates of water production in the (Old) Luling field, which is near the Salt Flat field, place the daily water production at about 150,000 barrels (July, 1929) as compared with a daily oil production of 11,000 barrels. These figures indicate that in the Luling field approximately 14 barrels of water must be lifted for each barrel of oil produced. The Luling field was discovered in August, 1922, and a peak annual production of 10,210,000 barrels was reached during 1924. The production during 1928 was 5,057,000 barrels of oil from an average of 567 producing wells for the year. Although water appeared early in the life of the Luling field, the oil production has been well sustained. Another feature of outstanding interest is the comparatively few producing wells that have been abandoned on account of water during the soven years of operation of this field. Comparison of data between the Luling and Salt Flat fields is of importance because of the nearness of the two fields. The Luling field is a narrow strip or "shoestring" approximately 8 miles long, with a maximum width of 3,400 feet. Production is obtained in the Edwards limestone at an average depth of 2,200 feet on the upthrow side of a fault. Similar conditions of accumulation are found in the Salt Flat field at greater depth to Salt Flat field as outlined (April, 1930) is about 7 miles long? with a maximum width of 2,000 feet. At the time the field work was begun (July, 1929) in the Salt Flat field, drilling operations had been almost completed in the south half of the field, while the north half was still under development. Cross sections and a structure contour map interpret the subsurface conditions in the south half of the field, where the water conditions first became serious.

The optical properties of Au nanoparticles have been known for some time, with both Au colloids and Au nanoparticles embedded in glasses having been extensively studied. In this study, Pt nanoparticles have been incorporated into Au colloids, and the linear and non-linear optical properties investigated. UV-VIS spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectroscopy and the z-scan method have been used to examine the effects of such additions.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on multiple-seam mining has resulted in two new ground control products. Information Circular (IC) 9495 In some U.S. coalfields, particularly in central Appalachia and the West, most mines are operating above and/or beneath previously mined seams. The effects of multiple-seam interactions can include roof falls, rib spalling, and floor heave. These can seriously threaten the safety of miners and disrupt mining operations. Information Circular (IC) 9495 is a proceedings document containing a variety of papers that summarize recent knowledge about multiple-seam mining. A NIOSH study that analyzed case histories collected from 44 U.S. coal mines is described in detail. The study confirmed that overmining is much more difficult than undermining, and isolated remnant pillars cause more problems than gob-solid boundaries. The study's results were the basis for the Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS) software package. The proceedings also contain two papers describing the LaModel family of software. The original three-dimensional version of LaModel is essential for detailed analyses of complex multiple-seam scenarios. LaM2D implements a simplified, two-dimensional model suitable for quick approximations of the multiple-seam stresses and strains. Three papers in the proceedings focus on case histories. One describes the extensive multiple-seam experience at the Harris No. 1 Mine in West Virginia, a second contains examples of "extreme" multiple-seam mining from the central Appalachian coalfields, and a third describes interactions with regard to longwall mine experiences in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Utah. The final paper reports on a numerical modeling study that provided some insight into the mechanics of multiple-seam mining. [ ] AMSS Software Package NIOSH has developed a simple, user-friendly computer program called Analysis of Multiple-Seam Stability (AMSS). AMSS can help mine planners to evaluate each potential multiple-seam interaction and take steps to reduce the risk of ground control failure. AMSS begins by evaluating the pillar design. Introduction Democratic countries are founded on the principle that all citizens have the right to participate in policy setting and decision-making processes. Citizen participation is especially evident in environmental issues and policies. In the United States, there are currently over 10,000 environmental organizations and new ones are being formed each year. Many of these organizations are formed on a watershed basis and are particularly concerned about the impact mining has on the environment. While the environmental issues vary from area to area, most concerns center around mining impacts related to subsidence, water pollution, and water diversion. Citizens have a number of avenues for participating in lawmaking that affects the mining industry. Some of these avenues include participation in litigation and citizen ballot initiatives. In addition, there are less formal methods of participation that include attending public meetings, commenting on agency rules or lobbying on specific legislation. The intent of this article is outline the various public participations mechanisms, highlight the latest legal developments that have affected mining industry through citizen participation, and briefly discuss emerging issues.

This paper discusses the prediction of subsidence over partial extraction systems in thick coal seams. A model based on empirical techniques using influence functions is developed to calculate the surface ground settlements above extraction panels. Independent of the influence function, two field parameters, the subsidence factor and the angle of draw (limit angle) are required to define the model. Both these parameters are best observed from critical or super critical subsidence areas. However in thick seams, extraction widths are typically sub critical and therefore it was necessary to refine an estimation process for sub critical conditions. Partial extraction systems in NZ are characterised by variability with respect to extraction thickness and depth. As extraction proceeds along a panel, conditions deteriorate once the critical span width is exceeded and therefore percentage extraction decreases. A further variable was introduced to the modelling which allows for varying extraction sequences. Two comparisons with field observations, one over a partial extraction panel, the other over abandoned workings, showed the method gave good agreement to measured subsidence values.

IN the discussion on the paper on subsidence by R. V. Norris and H. W. Montz (Teohnical Publication No. 153), H. N. Eavenson has been good enough to quote some of my views regarding the phenomena of subsidence; he has, of course, only mentioned these briefly, and as he has not represented them quite correctly, it is evident that I have failed to make them clear. Seeing that he, and apparently some of the others who took part in the discussion, appear to hold views different from my own, I think it advisable to put my opinions down as definitely and as clearly as possible, because it appears to me at least possible that some of the differences above referred to may be differences of language and definition rather than of fact. The statements I propose to submit refer to the simplest cases, namely where an area in a practically horizontal bed has been entirely worked out. My experience has been confined to beds of bituminous coal and of ironstone, but D I do not at the moment see why there should be any difference in principle between the working of a bed of anthracite and one of bituminous coal, provided that the other conditions are the same. I wish to emphasize that I am considering the conditions of complete working out of the mineral bed with the roof allowed to come down and form goaf in accordance with the general British practice; 1 am excluding, therefore, methods of hydraulic, pneumatic, and hand stowage where extraneous material is brought in to hold up the roof. I am also excluding the case of bord and pillar working where pillars of small size are deliberately left in, apparently with the idea that these will subsequently crush and let the roof down gradually. Such a method of mining has long been discontinued in this country, indeed in Europe generally, and I venture to predict that the time will come when such a recklessly wasteful method will no longer be tolerated even in the United States. Further, I am referring entirely td static conditions after the mineral bed has been worked out and the ground has come to rest; the phenomena that occur during the course of extraction are much more complicated, and these I am not discussing here. Several years of operating experience of over 100 gold recovery operations on the West Coast has provided a database from which the basic operating costs of these types of operations can be characterised. Using figures generated from the averaging of plant operating costs throughout the region and financial modelling using Lotus spreadsheets has been developed to analyse both existing and proposed developments. This type of modelling has several uses: 1. Identification of the impact on profitability of changes in management practices, finance costs, operating costs and revenue streams. 2. Project evaluation and planning. 3. Profitability projections for development financing. 4. Troubleshooting with existing operations. 5. Valuation of existing operations and properties.

Detailed porewater profiles of arsenic and other interstitial metabolites were used to assess the relationship between trophic status, sediment redox chemistry and arsenic mobility in a historic tailings repository. The results demonstrate that in eutrophied systems which exhibit greater sediment oxygen demand, the depth of the Fe(III) redoxcline, and hence depth of arsenic release, may lie in close proximity to the sediment-water interface. As a result, arsenic scavenging mechanisms are significantly reduced, resulting in a greater flux of arsenic to the water column. Such considerations have important implications for the management of pit lakes, tailings ponds and contaminated lakes which may consider: 1) the discharge of sewage to the water body during operations; and/or 2) post-closure fertilization as a remediation strategy.

Foskor operates a mine in the Northern Province of the Republic of South Africa exploiting the igneous complex at Phalaborwa. It produces about 3 million tons of phosphate concentrate per year by means of froth flotation from 26million tons of ore of which 16 million is mined and milled onsite. The remaining 10 million tons originate at the Palabora Mining Company and is pumped as a slurry to Foskor. Two types of ore are mined and milled namely Foskorite and Pyroxenite. (The main mineral content of this ore is Apatite, Phlogopite and Diopside.) After three stages of crushing the ore is milled using 24 rod mills and 5 verti mills. The apatite is then recovered using four stages of froth flotation. The stocks of Foskorite ore are rapidly being depleted and the PMC tailings will also fall away by the year 2002 so that the whole mining operation will then be centred around the Pyroxenite ore. This will lead to substantial increases inproduction costs. The recoveries achieved in the flotation plant are largely dependent on the successful operation of the comminution section. Parts of this plant are now 35 years old and the advantages of re-engineering, new technology and automation can only be applied to a limited extent in an effort to reduce costs. It was then decided to investigate alternative milling methods, both wet and dry.

Introduction First, I should define more closely the vague term 'recent work' that appears in the title of this paper. Following the period of depression that was an aftermath of the first Great War, the Research Council of, Alberta carried on for ten years without a Council and without a financial yote by the Legislature. In November, 1942, a new Council was formed, under the chairmanship of the Hon. N. E. Tanner, Minister of Lands and Mines, and a vote was granted by the Legislature early in 1943. By 'recent work', I mean work during the present regime. The Council is now going full steam ahead, or would be if it could get suitable technical assistance and required apparatus and materials. Lack of these has so far made unnecessary my responsibility for seeing that we do not exceed our estimates. The Annual Meeting of the Research Council will be held in November (1945), and at that meeting the programme of work for next year will be discussed. The present time is therefore the correct time for any of you who may have ideas as to work which might profitably be undertaken by the Council, to submit these ideas for consideration. I propose to discuss my subject under several headings, and to give enough of these to show that the Council has wide interests.
