Without an adequate data sample there can be no Reliability Analysis (RA). Without analysis there can be no systematic, verifiable improvement in reliability or in operational economy. A sample is a collection of life cycles. A beginning and ending event define a failure mode life cycle. Well known obstacles impede the reliability engineer in his role to analyze maintenance data. The main problem lies in the difficulty to obtain analyzable data samples. Although modern Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMSs) should provide the needed information they rarely deliver samples of adequate quality. Cerrejon, an integrated mining operation in Colombia, South America solved the information management problem by applying a "Living Reliability Centered Maintenance (LRCM)" process to its fleets of Trucks, Graders, Dozers, Loaders, and Shovels. This paper describes a method wherein completed work orders capture reliability analysis enabling information. The 'right' maintenance observations reference significant failure modes. Work orders link to records in a continuously growing Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) structured knowledge base. Grouped and filtered knowledge-to-work order links, being instances of failure modes, provide the samples required by reliability analysis software tools and methods. LRCM software and related procedures facilitate the growth of knowledge, manage the work order-to-RCM relationship, and generate samples for subsequent reliability analysis.

Handling of heavy vehicles such as tractors, trucks and buses require a large roll stiffness which causes large high accelerations at the seat level during impacts. To provide comfort and minimize the energy transfer from the chassis and the seat a pneumatic active seat suspension is proposed. An active seat suspension design and control algorithm under development at the University of Illinois at Chicago, UIC, is being developed and tested. Preliminary results are presented in this paper. The design of a passive suspension typically consists of optimizing the value of two parameters: the stiffness and the damping of the suspension. The general dynamic performance of the suspension is limited to the conditions under which these parameters were obtained. A change in the input conditions might lead to poor suspension and an amplification of the vibration transmitted to the body. The focus of this paper is a robust, semi-active suspension system with a variable controlled damping and using the body response an index measure to minimize the acceleration at the interface of the seat and operator. A summary of existing suspensions, such as MR and ER fluids, and spring loaded and dual valve shock absorbent will be discussed to highlight the need of a semi-active pneumatic suspension system design. Methods A model of the proposed suspension was developed in MATLB (Simulink) and different control strategies for the valve position in relation to the cylinder pressure tested. The effects of stiffening and softening resulting from pressure changes in the cylinder were examined. The vertical accelerations of the seat was computed for different control strategies and configurations of the suspension and compared to the response of a passive seat suspension. A lump -mass model was created to represent the human body including the head, the upper, middle and lower torso as well as the legs. The connective forces between body segments were modeled through modal analysis techniques from previous experiments at the Vehicle Technology Laboratory. ISO standards and absorbed power were used to evaluate the different configuration of the seat suspension system in relation to the dynamic response of the operator. Results Initial results of the semi-active suspension system show a significant reduction in the RMS value of the acceleration of the seat. A reduction of the total absorbed power by the operator is expected to provide an insight into the control strategies adapted in the active suspension.

The effectiveness of anaerobic in-situ biological treatment for the immobilization of selenium, molybdenum, and uranium in an alluvial aquifer was examined using long-term column tests. A series of organic substrate and nutrient combinations were tested to determine removal effectiveness, optimum supplement concentrations and ratios. Final column testing was conducted to determine the chemical stability of the treatment by-products/treatment compounds by dosing the columns continuously with elevated redox untreated alluvial groundwater.

When the United States entered the World War governmental agencies found little definite knowledge available as to the exact capacity of each sulphuric acid plant in the United States to manufacture acid under the stress of a great emergency. It is true that on account of the demand for acid for the manufacture of munitions for the Allies, prior to the entrance of this country into the war, most of the acid plants near industrial centers in the Eastern and Northern States were running at or nearly their maximum capacity, but, . for various reasons, many plants in these States and plants in other districts were not. For a number of years statistics as to the production of acid by the plants of the country were compiled by the United States Geological Survey, but obviously such figures did not give information as to the maximum capacities that might be available for meeting the he.a vy war ·requirements, or as to the steps that would have to be taken to bt-ing these capacities into use. During the summer and early fall of 1917 various attempts were made to obtain the desired information, but no satisfactory or complete data were obtained. Late in 1917, under the authority granted to the Bureau of Mines by the explosives act, the Director of the Bureau of Mines directed A. E. Wells, metallurgist of the bureau, to uiake a complete survey of the situation. Mr. Wells personally conferred with officials of the acid companies and visited most of the acid plants in the North that are east of the Mississippi River. The information obtained through this personal survey, together with that obtained through the ready cooperation of the subcommittee on ncids, and the subcommittee on fertilizers of the Committee on Chemicals of the Council of National Defense, enabled the preparation of a report containing the desired data concerning the sulphuric acid industry. This report was made immediately available to the War Industries Board and to those offices in the War and Navy Depart- ments that were most directly concerned in planning the explosives program and in obtaining the necessary supplies to produce the explosives. Beginning with this survey and report, the sulphuric acid section of the war minerals investigations of the Bureau of Mines took an active part in all matters pertaining to the sulphuric acid industry during the remainder of the war. Mr. Wells, the chief of the section, was appointed an associate chief of the sulphur, pyrite, and sulphuric acid sections of the War Industries Board. .Also, by this direct contact with the War Industries Board, the data obtained by Messrs. R. R. Hornor, H. A. Buehler, a.nd 0. Lindstrom, who were in charge, for the bureau, of the investigations concerning the supplies of pyrite and sulphur, were constantly made available to all interested Government agencies. D. E. Fogg, of New York City, was appointed chemical engineer to the sulphuric acid section to make special investigations relating to the acid industry, especially the possible utilization, in an emergency, of those sources of raw material.not then being used. Mr. E. E. Corbett, of Brooklyn, N. Y., was appointed chemical engineer to make investigations concerned primarily ,vith the conservation of acid. Direct and intimate contact with the industry was had through the close cooperation with the committee on acids of the Chemical Alliance, this committee during the greater part of 1918 occupying rooms with the acid section of the bureau. With the ending of the war and the close o:f the active work of the acid section of the bureau, the suggestion was made by many interested parties that a bulletin be prepared giving some qf the fun. damental and most important facts regarding the sulphuric acid industry, including a discussion of the technical :features of the manufacture of acid. During the war the bureau received -a vast number of inquiries in regard to various phases of the industry, a.nd this fact also made such a bulletin seem desirable. Therefore, the present bulletin was prepared to cover the main facts in regard to the industry in this country, including a discussion of the supplies of sulphur-bearing raw materials, the situation of the acid plants, the principal points in regard to manufacturing processes, and the uses of the acid. No attempt has been ma.de to discuss at length the manufacturing processes, as details differ more or less at the different plants and in general are carefully guarded by the acid ·companies. A great deal of the data given in this bulletin may be found in various pub]ications, but this is the first publication in which such data have been assembled and made readily available. Most of the data were obtained directly from observation and from cooperating acid companies or from individuals who had been or are now engaged in acid manufacturing and were liberal and generous in making their information available for publication. Care has been exercised to publish no data that were obtained as confidential by the bureau's representatives. The average acid manufacturer may be already more or less acquainted with most of the information presented in this bulletin, yet it is believed that the bulletin will be of value to those who wish to obtain a. general review of the present condition, both the economic and technical, of the sulphuric acid industry in the United States.

Selection of an appropriate foundation system requires great skill and ingenuity on the part of the designer. Certain guidelines for choosing between a pile and raft foundation are presented. A number of methods are available for estimating the capacity of piles, giving a wide range of values for the theoretical load carrying capacity. A few aspects to be taken into account while arriving at an appropriate theoretical capacity are discussed. The effect of fluctuation of water table level on the pile capacity and method of accounting for this factor on the pile capacity obtained through initial load test are also discussed. A case study presents a comparison between the estimated values of capacity of piles and the values obtained through the initial load test.

On the basis of world production data alone, 1985 appears to have been a year in which the world's mineral industry took another step upward in its recovery from the very poor years of 1981, 1982, and early 1983. Despite a drop in the output of crude oil, which was the single most significant crude mineral product from the viewpoint of value, the estimated value of world crude mineral production advanced by 3.4% to about $1,054 billion constant 1983 dollars, with output increases logged for nearly two-thirds of the commodities and forms of commodities for which the U.S. Bureau of Mines calculates a total world output. However, the economic well-being of any industry or group of industries cannot be measured solely in terms of the volume and/or value of its production, and examination of statistics reflecting other aspects of mineral industry performance shows that 1985 was a less than ideal year in many respects. In the case of consumption of mineral commodities, although there were gains registered in diverse sectors such as iron and steel, aluminum, fertilizer materials, solid fuels, and gaseous fuels, there were also proportionally small but notable declines in use among the older major nonferrous metals (copper, lead, tin, and zinc) and in the all-important liquid fuels. In the case of international trade in mineral commodities, although comprehensive data for 1985 were not yet available, there were indications that the value may well have fallen below the estimated 1984 level of $632 billion, although the volume may have increased slightly. This, if true, would be chiefly the result of declining prices of mineral commodities, and indeed, price declines were noted for a number of significant materials in terms of current dollars, and even more would register declines if calculated on the basis of constant dollars, adjusting for inflation.

"An OK 300 cu. ft. Skim - Air cell was installed at the HBM&S concentrator in Flin Flon in 1987. Since that time, 3 additional OK Skim - Air cells have been installed in HBM&S concentrators. The cell treats a coarse 70% solids slurry with a residence time of 2.5 minutes. The product from the cell (a unit cell type application) is a final grade copper concentrate with high precious metal values. Since its installation, the cell has improved gold recovery by 10 - 15%. Process variables such as circulating load, pH, froth depth, feed size, and reagent additions all have an effect on the operation of the cell. Maintenance on the cell has been minimal. Initial operating problems involving level control have been significantly reduced and operations are now relatively trouble free. Although very successful at Flin Flon, site specific operating circumstances will determine the suitability of this cell. INTRODUCTIONHudson Bay Mining and Smelting operates four concentrators in Northern Manitoba. Three treat copper-zinc ores, the fourth mills a copper-nickel ore. The Flin Flan concentrator operates two circuits in parallel which treat copper and zinc ores from the Trout Lake and Callinan mines. Both circuits in the Flin Flan mill have Skim-Air cells integrated into the grinding circuits.The Trout Lake cell was installed first and had a payback period of a few months. Required modifications to the cell were made to enhance its performance. These included changing the discharge valve size, tuning the level controller, and installing an insert into the rubber valve sleeve to increase its wear life. The payback period on the Callinan cell was significantly reduced because these modifications were completed prior to its installation.The cells produce a final grade copper concentrate and since their installation gold and silver recoveries to the final copper concentrate have increased significantly. Operating parameters such as coarseness of cell feed dictate the metal recoveries and froth depth determines the selectivity of the cell and therefore the grade of the concentrate.The Skim-Air cell can be suitable in applications where a final product is generated. However, when a bulk concentrate, which requires further separation, is produced, the coarseness of the product may not make it amenable to conventional flotation.The Flin Flan mills Skim-Air cells have worked exceptionally well with little maintenance required."

"The Riley tungsten property of the Northern Nevada Mining Co. was examined by the Bureau of Mines in August 1943, and from February 22 to August 22, 1945, the property was explored by the Bureau.Riley mine, which comprises 60 acres, is in sec. 9, T. 38 N., R. 42 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, in the Potosi Mining District, on the east slope of the Osgood Range in eastern Humboldt County, Nevada. J. S. Riley is president of Northern Nevada Mining Co., the general offices of which are at 29 East First Street, Reno, Nev.Winnemucca, Nev., 42 miles southwest of the mine and on the main line of the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads and U. S. Highway 40, is the nearest supply center. The post office for the Potosi district is 15 miles south at Red House, Nev., a station on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads. A good dirt road, which leaves U. S Highway 40 about 15 miles east of Winnemucca, extends northeast to the property.Tungsten occurs as scheelite in a characteristic Nevada contact-metamorphic tactite deposit between limestone and granodiorite Fifteen diamond-drill holes were completed for a total length of 2,630 feet.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. The endlessly changing pattern of mineral supply and demand offers opportunity to the alert and can bring disaster to the unwary. The discovery of ore bodies, the invention of extractive processes, the provision of new transport facilities, the political stabilization of underdeveloped areas, and many other changes can increase supply dramatically. Such new outpourings of mineral wealth from ore bodies bring fortunes to their developers, and consumers frequently find their competitive positions decidedly improved by new and cheap sources of supply. On the other hand, operators of marginal properties can find competition from newly opened high-grade mines intolerable. Consumers that have depended on the products of nearby, high-cost mines may find new, remote, low-cost supplies advantageous only to their competitors. The invention of new prospecting methods can have spectacular effects. Shortly after World War I the discovery rate of petroleum pools began to decline. The leading prospecting technique of that day, the projection downward of surface reflections of geologic structure, was proving less rewarding. Prophets foretold an oil shortage in the near future. But at that very moment scientists were perfecting the application of seismic waves to reveal underground oil-bearing geologic structures. As these geophysical methods were put into commercial use the whole outlook changed-the problem of the 1930's became how to cope with the surplus from discovery, not how to meet the ever rising demand. Many lead mines were being abandoned as unprofitable about this same time because the penalties charged by smelters for the zinc in the ores and concentrates more than counterbalanced the payments for lead and silver. Mineral resource evaluation and estimation process is not an exact science; however it depends on the knowledge and experience of the competent person and his ability to apply his mind, make reasonable assumptions, interpretations and exercise sound judgment in the mineral resource estimation process. The mineral resource evaluation results in a mineral resource statement are disclosed to investors. The minerals industry is presently undergoing rapid changes in legislation governing the public reporting of mineral assets. It has gone through different phases of development with respect to the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves (mineral assets). In the past no reporting was done and currently mineral assets are reported as a supplementary section that briefly describes the mineral asset termed ?the mineral reserve and mineral resource statement?. The current industry trend appears to be going towards recognition and disclosure of the mineral assets on to the balance sheet. This paper explores the salient issues behind the mineral resources and mineral reserve statement of vein and reef deposits published in the public domain. It also highlights the potential misleading consequences of these issues and which filter through to the valuation of these particular mineral assets. The creation of reporting standards in the minerals industry has made significant inroads in standardizing and consolidating the interpretation and understanding of the different classification categories in the industry in an effort to promote common interpretation towards these salient issues.

A study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between the quantity and value of economic demonstrated resources discovered for 12 mineral commodities over a ten year period and the expenditure required to yield such mineable resources. The results showed that for every dollar spent on exploration, there is an apparent in-ground average value of around $54 dollars contained in the economic resources found. While this appears to be a satisfactory return, it should be remembered that more than 99.9% of exploration programs are judged to be failures because a viable ore body or mineral deposit was not proved up. What is behind this seeming paradox?   The fundamental truth behind mineral exploration is the fact that the more you explore, the more you find, and that one success will often lead to further discoveries. It appears that one rich and viable deposit creates such surplus that its inherent high value ('the pot of gold') makes up for all the failures. In short, mineral exploration is a high risk business with uncertain returns. However, with skill, enthusiasm, experience and venture capital, it can yield larger than normal returns for the brave and the fortunate.   Analysis of exploration expenditure and economic resources discovered for the period 1987 to 1996 revealed that the apparent in-ground value of economic ore discovered per dollar of exploration expenditure varied from a high of $429 for iron ore and $261 for bauxite to a low of $22 for gold and for lead, and $5 per dollar of diamond exploration expenditure. Preliminary conclusions drawn on the reasons for the variations observed include the inherent ease or difficulty of discovery for different mineral commodities which may in some cases, relate to the natural prospectivity of Australia as a whole. Layered deposits like iron ore and bauxite appear to yield higher in-ground value returns on the exploration dollar. To some explorationists, this may be considered as seemingly obvious, but it may have more to do with very large-exploration tenement grants pursued by various Australian State Governments in the early 1950s and 1960s than the apparent ease of delineating a stratabound deposit.   Despite the apparent relatively low in-ground value produced by the gold exploration dollar of $22, the 5660 tonnes of gold discovered in this ten year period was worth $9.1 billion and representing over a quarter of the new mineral wealth created in the ten years to 1996. This contribution, along with that from the other minerals discovered over the period, led to a significant boost to Australia's export income and standard of living.   It is concluded that, given the nexus between the amount of mineral exploration expenditure and the quantity of new resources likely to be discovered, this knowledge may help policy makers seek to influence the rate of resource discovery in countries like Australia for the benefit of the nation.

While the neurological and vascular aspects of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) has been generally accepted as a medical condition, the medical criteria and the clinical findings used to establish the diagnosis has been more difficult to bring to consensus. The criteria was first quantified by the Taylor-Palmear scale.1 This criteria was subsequently modified in 1986 at the 1st Stockholm Workshop2,3 to included more acceptance for the neurological effects that characterized the predominate findings in some workers. The relationship between hand-arm vibration and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was defined in NIOSH 97-1414. While the aforementioned documents have defined the clinical entities associated with hand-arm vibration exposure, agreement on the clinical findings and test to confirm the diagnosis has be been more difficult to bring to consensus. Clinicians assessing HAVS has relied on a number of varied neurological and vascular tests. The neurological testing has focused on assessing damage to the sensory capability of the fingers for the neurological component including tests to measuring ability to sense vibration, cold or other end point finger sensor functions. However, the vascular testing has been traditionally focused on the ability to either measure vascular function or to reproduce the vascular blanching that occurs in HAVS with cold water provocation. Recent assessment of this testing in the United Kingdom Coal Miner’s study has questioned the value of this testing especially in reviews by McGeoch.5 In an attempt to provide some type of definitive testing to substantiate vascular damage from hand-arm vibration exposure, angiography is an alternative or adjunct to cold water provocation testing. The standards that have been established to predict the level, type and incidence of HAVS have been based on clinical studies and reports that have essentially been all male populations. However, the recent entry of women into more vibration intensive jobs has brought about the exposure of some women to high levels of vibration previously only previously experienced by men. However, there have been only few studies that look at HAVS in women6. Although exposed the same vibration levels, it has not been clear that the latency and type of pathology of HAVS in women will be the same as for men. The purpose of this study is to look at recent case studies of men and women exposed to jobs with high levels of hand-arm vibration with extensive clinical testing for both the neurological and vascular components of HAVS as well as other associated upper extremity conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

"This paper focusses on new developments regarding thermal rock fragmentation applications. The technology consists of a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air. The thermal reaction that is created allows for the enlargement of 125 mm to 450 mm holes by breaking the rock in a spalling effect. It has been used for over 30 years in Russian open pit mining. Following an agreement between Dynamitage T.C.G. Inc. and the owner of the technology, major improvements have been brought to this technology, allowing for the fabrication of a prototype suitable for the Canadian industry. In Russia and the Ukraine, thermal rock fragmentation is actually used to drill large diameter holes in surface mining. Upon having acquired a better knowledge of this technology, it seems that it presents a great potential for selective mining in narrow-vein operations, for either surface or underground mining.Rocmec International Inc., a subsidiary of Dynamitage T.C.G. Inc., and Natural Resources Canada are technical partners in the evaluation of the operational parameters and environmental aspects such as gas, heat, dust and fog emissions. Furthermore, Canada Economic Development is a financial partner in this project.This paper presents the technology and its history. It also reports on the changes brought to the equipment to adapt it to North American environments. A summary of the tests carried out since 1995 is provided, along with the main conclusions obtained. The anticipated applications for the use of this technology in both surface and underground environments are described such as open pit mining, bulk sampling and narrow-vein ore extraction. An estimate showing a comparison between the thermal fragmentation mining concept and the long-hole mining method is presented and, finally, the future developments planned are listed."

Waste rock dumps, tailings impoundments and spent leach heaps are common features at mine sites. Many of these waste disposal facilities contain sulfide-rich minerals, which generate acid mine drainage (AMD) when they oxidize. Control of AMD can be achieved by removing one or more of the three essential components in the acid-generating process (sulfides, air, or water). One AMD prevention measure is to cap the waste with an engineered cover system to minimize the infiltration of water and diffusion of air into the system. Possible cover designs include: ? Earthen ?store-and-release? covers (also known as evapotranspiration (ET) or water balance covers), including capillary barriers. These covers require climate conditions where there is both modest to little rainfall and significantly greater evapotranspiration than precipitation, both annually and seasonally. ? Low-permeability compacted clay liners (CCLs) employing fine-grained soils typically compacted at wet of optimum water content. ? Geosynthetic composite covers, comprised of a geomembrane liner placed over and in direct contact with either a CCL or a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL). These systems have been commonly used for base liners for leach pads as well as covers and base liners at municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the US for more than 20 years. Comparisons of these different cover systems, both in terms of performance and cost, are presented later in this paper. First, however, a review of the typical mine closure approaches, and the possible rationale behind them, is warranted.

"BioteQ has successfully developed commercial operations for ARD treatment and selective metal recovery using the patented BioSulphide and Thiopaq® biological reduction technologies. The BioSulphide-Thiopaq process was developed to provide biogenic sulphide for the selective recovery of high purity metal concentrates from acidic wastewater, which are sold to recover capital costs and off-set water treatment costs. The BioSulphide-Thiopaq process can be used on a stand-alone basis or in conjunction with a lime circuit. Process advantages include: selective recovery of metals, very low metal concentrations in effluent, reduced waste sludge liability, reduced lime treatment costs and, in some cases, profitable sale of metal concentrates. Two case studies are presented to illustrate operations focused on metal recovery at the Caribou Mine, New Brunswick, Canada, and at Phelps Dodge, Arizona. A third case study is presented to highlight environmental control as well as metal recovery for treatment of ARD at the Raglan Mine in Northern Quebec. Process flowsheets, capital and operating costs are presented for the three case studies.INTRODUCTIONProtection of water quality has become one of the most important environmental challenges facing the mining industry. Although new mining projects can be designed to minimize impacts to the environment, many existing and abandoned mining operations have water quality problems. The principal cause of water contamination is acid rock drainage (ARD), which is generated when residual sulphide minerals in waste rock, tailings and other mine components and products are exposed to air and water. Many reports and papers have been delivered on projects under construction or already in operation, but we believe there are few that have been written about projects yet to be built specifically dealing with advanced mine and environmental planning. This paper describes such planning for Atlantic Richfield Company's Black Thunder mine. Project planning is a cyclic phenomenom involving four broadly overlapping planning steps (Figure 1). The demands of the public include needs that can be satisfied through planned resource development. Using a base of information that partly exists and must in part be gathered and updated, the preplanned development can be, evaluated. The evaluation process, with built-in environmental constraints leads to an implementation procedure. Implementation results in the development, including the release of the affected area to other public demands that follow.

Laboratory model test results for the ultimate uplift capacity of rough rigid single and group piles embedded in sand have been presented. Model tests on single piles were conducted in loose, medium, and dense sand. The uplift tests on group piles were conducted in medium sand only. Based on the present model test results, tentative relationships for the estimation of the ultimate uplift capacity of single pile have been presented. The efficiency of group piles is a function of the length-to-diameter ratio, center-to-center spacing to diameter ratio, number of piles in a group, and the degree of compaction of sand.

Hand forces are important factors for risk assessment of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 Grip force is one of the most important force components in the operation of powered hand tools. A considerable number of studies on grip force have been reported. It is well known that the grip force applied on a cylindrical handle is not uniformly distributed on each axis across the center of the handle cross-section.2 Therefore, maximum and minimum orientations of grip force exist around the handle. Such orientations have not been clearly identified. In a recently proposed international standard (ISO/CD 15230, 2005),3 it is stated that “the direction of the main gripping force is generally parallel to the z-axis defined in ISO 8727.” 4 This assertion is questionable, and further examinations are required. The objective of this study was to establish a fundamental theory on the distribution of the grip force around cylindrical handles. Methods As shown in Fig. 1, the grip force is defined as a vector composed of normal and shear components (FN & FT) in this study. Fig. 2 shows the hand coordinate system defined in this study, together with the ISO systems.1,4 Based on this novel grip force definition, we derived four fundamental properties and a theorem. More significantly, we formulated a novel hypothesis: similar to Mohr’s circle of stress, the normal and shear components can be represented approximately using an ellipse on the plane of the two force coordinates, as shown in Fig. 3. The maximum and minimum grip normal forces are termed as the first principal grip force (F1) and the second principal grip normal force (F2), respectively. Their corresponding orientations are termed as the first principal grip angle (a1) and the second principal grip angle (a2). A series of experiments were conducted to test this hypothesis. Twelve

The innate variability of natural materials and processes causes uncertainty in the models representing the natural phenomena and uncertainty in estimating the parameters that are used in these models. Reliability analyses, in contrast to the traditional factor of safety approach, are well suited to a rational incorporation of uncertainty in design and exploration decisions. Probabilistic kinetic and kinematic analyses were developed and combined to form reliability analysis methods. With one method the reliability, i.e.) the probability of failure, of an individual 2-plane wedge in a slope can be determined. The other method is aimed at slopes with a single slope parallel set of joints. In each case two approaches were developed, an encompassing one relying on computer codes and a simplified or summary approach relying on charts or pocket calculator computation. A major contribution of these approaches is the treatment of joint persistance. Instead of having to assume a certain persistence, it is now possible to use exploration data on joint geometry and to include the persistence effect rigorously.

Keywords: stainless steel, AOD refining, side and top combined blowing, mixing characteristics, water modeling The fluid mixing characteristics in the bath during the side and top combined blowing AOD (argon-oxygen decarburization) refining process of stainless steel have preliminarily been investigated on a water model unit of a 120 t AOD converter. The geometric similarity ratio between the model and its prototype (including the side tuyeres and the top lances) was 1:4. On the basis of the theoretical calculations for the parameters of the gas streams in the side tuyeres and the top lances, the gas blowing rates used for the model have more reasonably been determined. The influence of the tuyere number and position arrangement, and the gas flow rates for side and top blowing on the characteristics has been examined. The results demonstrated that the liquid in the bath underwent vigorous circulatory motion during gas blowing, without obvious dead zone in the bath, resulting in a well mixing effectiveness. The gas flow rate of the main tuyere had a governing role on the characteristics, a suitable increase in the gas flow rate of the subtuyere could improve mixing efficiency, and the gas jet from top lance could make the mixing time prolong. Corresponding to the oxygen top blowing rate specified by the technology, a roughly equivalent and good mixing effectiveness could be reached by using six side tuyeres with an angle of 27 degrees between each tuyere, and five side tuyeres with an angular separation of 22.5 or 27 degrees between each tuyere. The relationships of the mixing time with the gas blowing rates of main-tuyeres and sub-tuyeres and top lance, the angle between each tuyere, and the tuyere number have been obtained.
