The computer program introduced in this paper is based on design guidelines developed for selection of support systems used in mine roadways. The support types considered include rock bolts as well as rigid and yieldable steel arches. Using the computer program, the design engineer can select the type, pattern and specifications of the support systems suitable for various roof conditions. The concepts utilized, assumptions made, support selection criteria and description of the computer program, developed for the PC, are included.

The results of designing, constructing, and laboratory testing of a modular, distributed, microprocessor-based mine monitoring and control system are presented. A standard computer communications protocol (DDCMP) was utilized throughout the system. Tests were performed on the utilization of a high-level language for programming mine monitoring and control systems. Laboratory tests were run on a combined air velocity/methane sensor.

Subsidence may be observed above partial extraction shallow room-and-pillar mines where the coal seam(s) is associated with weak and thick claystone in the floor. This paper presents results of subsidence studies at such a mine. During the 26-month study period, a time dependent subsidence causing a maximum vertical movement of 50 mn was observed. After a subsidence rate of 6.0-6.5 m/month for the first two months after development of mine workings, the rate decreased to 0.8-0.9 mm/month after 17 months. However, presumably due to settlement of barrier pillars, it increased therafter to 1.7 mm/month for the next 9 months. Angle of draw, based on zero subsidence, was calculated to be about 29 degrees. Maximum tensile strain and compressive strain values observed were 0.040 pct and 0.039 pct respectively. A hypothesis was fomlated to correlate surface subsidence movements with observed underground movments. The data collected to date fits reasonably well within the formulated hypothesis.

"SynopsisRotary drilling with rolling tricone bits is the most widely used method for drilling large-diameter blast-holes in large surface mining operations. This drilling method is applicable to a wide range of soft to hard rock materials. This paper presents a fuzzy model for predicting the penetration rate of tricone rotary blast-hole drilling. The model is based on data obtained during the drilling of blastholes in rocks with various uniaxial compressive strengths in the Veliki Krivelj open pit mine, Bor, Serbia. The model was developed using the fuzzy logic toolbox of MATLAB with the Mamdani inference system. The fuzzy model was tested with 23% of the total dataset. The results obtained show the high reliability of predicting the penetration rates. Electrical accidents occurring in coal mines from 1975 through 1979 were categorized and analyzed. The data was searched for common electrical hazards, common activities on the part of those injured, and common negligent or careless behavior. The most common electrical hazard was abnormal arcs or sparks, the most common injured activity was handling energized trailing cables, and the most common careless behavior was failure to de-energize circuits before working on them. The accident data was combined with mine production statistics to form a normalized electrical accident rate. It was found that some mines have consistently more lost workdays per man-hour worked than do other mines. Bureau of Mines electrical safety research contract expenditures were reviewed to judge whether the research effort was directed to those areas which are related to the most accidents. In some cases it was not. A method was devised and utilized to estimate the relative cost to the mining industry to implement certain safety measures developed through Bureau research, and also to estimate the potential safety benefits. Some safety changes are recommended, others are not. MSHA regulations were reviewed for effectiveness in preventing electrical accidents, and suggestions were made for discontinuing, clarifying, or otherwise modifying the regulations.

The past twenty to thirty years have seen unprecedented research activity aimed at understanding the performance of flotation froths. In 1990, Finch and Dobby coined the term froth recovery factor, Rr, to represent the efficiency of the froth in delivering particles from the pulp-froth interface to the concentrate. Originally defined for flotation columns, Rr has also been found useful in modeling mechanical flotation cells, and a number of techniques, based on quite different approaches, have been developed for measuring the froth recovery in industrial flotation cells. None of these techniques is universally successful. This paper reviews the concept of the froth recovery factor, and the basis of each of the techniques that have been proposed to measure Rr, and examines the reasons for this parameter being so difficult to pin down. A casual reading of the geological literature extant to-day would give one the impression that carbon is an element which by some chance or another always existed at or near the surface of the earth, and was never of a magmatic origin. The carbonaceous matter in shales is said to be of vegetal derivation; petroleum is stated to have been derived from vegetable matter or from marine animal bodies; if carbon or bituminous matter is found in igneous rocks or associated with metallic ores, the statement is made that deeply buried carbonaceous sedimentaries were undoubtedly the source from which such carbon or bituminous matter was derived. This, I do not consider a reasonable or common sense view of the matter. Carbon is one of the elements of which the earth is composed. In the table giving the periodicity of the elements it comes sixth in the order of increasing atomic weights. It is an element formed like all the rest were formed, and must be as common to the interior of the earth as the rest of the eighty-odd elements so far discovered. The spectroscopic analysis of light from the sun, and the stars, shows the presence of carbon in the sun and in the colder stars. Thus with carbon, an element, found throughout the universe as well as on the earth, it is entirely reasonable to consider it as present in the interior of the earth with the other elements. Such being the case, the magmatic origin for the various forms of carbon in rocks and ores is a rational and logical conclusion. If but a small fraction of thought and effort was made along these lines, which is made in fostering the idea of the organic origin of the carbon found in the earth&apos;s crust, untold advances in this phase of geological science would result.

For Greek kaolin producers, a considerable proportion of whose output is from deposits containing more than 4 wt% Fe2O3, the colouring resulting from iron oxide impurity represents a serious problem that necessitates upgrading of the ore to meet commercial specifications. Autoclave leaching with oxalic acid for 1 h at 120 degrees C and 5-6 bar was shown to reduce Fe2O3 by up to 90% without affecting the structure of the kaolin, which maintained its physicochemical properties. The objectives of the Continuous Shaft Lining (CSL) System are to reduce the costs, safety hazards, and time currently required in lining mine shafts with concrete. The CSL will line machine bored shafts downward from the shaft collar on a continuous basis using an inverted, pressurized slipforming technique. The technique for slip-forming downwards has been demonstrated and refined under this program. The approach taken involved laboratory scale testing of key features of the CSL concept. These feature tests included concrete distribution, concrete sealing, concrete slipforming and development of a reliable concrete mix. Based on these results, a full scale above-ground test facility and CSL were designed and fabricated. The objectives of these tests were to demonstrate the viability of the basic concept; to establish operating limits; and to provide input data and information for the design of a second generation shaft lining system. The results of the program have led to a CSL design and operational philosophy which will need to be tested in an underground environment before industry will accept the technology. However, the next generation CSL promises to meet all the original program technical objectives.

Mechanical loading, adopted long ago in open-pit, coal, and non-metal mines, was not used extensively in underground metal mines until the World War. In less than a decade it became standard practice in underground work in many mining districts. In 1924 the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines, published a bulletin entitled "Mechanical Underground Loading in Metal Mines," which was prepared by Charles E. van Barneveld, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines.

Previous laboratory and field experimentation has demonstrated the effect of several variables on drilling rate.1-5 These results have been incorporated into optimization theories6-" for the purpose of reducing drilling cost. Minimum-cost drilling theories rely on a combination of historical data and empirical prediction techniques for selecting optimum bit weight and rotary speed. Past solutions have required extensive use of computing equipment because of both the complexity of the mathematical formulations and the large number of parameters involved. Field attempts to apply these computed results have frequently failed because of the uncertainty of input data requirements. Humble has developed an on-site computer system to control bit weight and rotary speed and thereby implement the concepts of minimum-cost drilling. This system can (1) perform short interval drilling rate tests for formation evaluation, (2) use the results of these tests as input information to solve minimum-cost drilling formulas, and (3) control bit weight and rotary speed in accordance with these computed solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe the computer control system and present results of initial field testing. Theoretical Considerations Minimum-cost drilling (MCD) requires a quantitative evaluation of the variables involved. Several forms of a basic mathematical model have been sug-gested.&apos;?,&apos; "he relationships reported here form the basis for the solution programmed in this work. Four equations are used, expressing drilling rate, bit bearing wear, bit tooth wear, and cost. A solution for minimum-cost drilling assuming constant bit weight and rotary speed over the entire bit life has been programmed for use in computing MCD schedules. This solution is subject to certain limiting assumptions such as those discussed by Graham et a1.I2: 1. Drilling cost is the summation of bit cost, rotating cost, connection cost and hoisting cost. 2. Diamond bits are excluded. 3. Bit life is limited by either bearing failure or tooth wear, or by a combination of operational factors that make it cheaper to pull an incompletely consumed bit. 4. Circulating hydraulics are adequate and do not limit drilling rate. 5. Bit weight considerations exclude hole deviation. 6. Drilling rate is a function of only bit weight, rotary speed, and degree of tooth dullness; that is, the effects of pressure, lithology, fluid properties hydraulics and drill string dynamics are ignored. Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

(communication to the Secretary?). -Fig. 1 plainly shows that the comparison of the steam-turbine and Diesel-engine plants was made on a basis of 6,000 kw. continuous operating load. The tabulation of costs for an 8,000-kw. load is merely done to show the relation of increased output on&apos; the unit power costs. Both plants would sacrifice their reserve capacity, which is to insure continuous operation, if operated to generate 8,000 kw. continuously; unless Mr. Hawkins advocates the operation of one of the turbines at 33.33 per cent. overload, retaining the other as a standby, which, besides overtaxing the turbine, results in a great loss of efficiency. It would he well for Mr. Hawkins to qualify certain of his statements. Thus, under the caption "Diesel Engines, Selection of Units," he says that "two of the largest Diesel-engine builders take the position that, in the present state of the art, they would not attempt to put out units over 1,000 kw.;" he should qualify it by saving that "two of the largest American Diesel-engine builders take the position that, in the present state of the art in the United States, they would not attempt to put out units over 1,000 kw." The reason that American manufacturers restrict themselves at present to units of that size is to be found not so much in a lack of experience in building large units as in a lack of a sufficient, demand for them in the United States to justify the heavy capital outlay connected with the development of such engines. There are relatively few localities in the United States where fuel prices are as high as they are in the Southwest, and regions of high fuel prices are sparsely settled and have a very limited demand for power. Where low fuel prices obtain, steam turbines are active competitors of Diesel engines for large power plants, particularly when the station load factor is low. As most of the American manufacturers of Diesel engines work under license agreements with European manufacturers, which limit their market to the United States and its possessions and Canada, a further limitation is imposed upon them, leaving to European firms practically the entire world as a market.

É comum o uso de modelos matemáticos no intuito de prever a qualidade do coque, sendo a maioria dos modelos atualmente disponíveis baseada nas propriedades dos carvões. Para este trabalho foram feitas misturas binárias e ternárias de carvões com variados teores de matéria volátil, a fim de se produzir coque em escala laboratorial. A reatividade ao CO2 em termobalança e resistência mecânica em tambores foi avaliada. Dois modelos para previsão de indicadores de qualidade do coque foram avaliados, o modelo aditivo e o modelo de interação. A partir da metodologia desenvolvida em laboratório foi possível produzir, avaliar e comparar coques feitos a partir de diferentes carvões e misturas. O modelo aditivo mostrou uma boa capacidade de prever a reatividade dos coques. No entanto, para os índices derivados dos testes de tambores os valores calculados mostram uma diferença importante em relação aos experimentais, indicando interação dos carvões no processo de carbonização. Nos resultados do modelo de interações, os valores calculados para reatividade e resistência mecânica, se comparados com os resultados do modelo aditivo, mostraram uma melhora na capacidade de previsão da qualidade do coque. O modelo de interações se apresenta como uma ferramenta interessante na seleção e mistura de carvões.

The Kiruna Mine in Sweden currently has three ventilation systems. The first two (a new and old system) serve the production areas. The third system is used for the facilities on the former main haulage level 775. That area includes offices and workshops for load haul dumpers (LHD) and drill rigs. The third ventilation system also covers the crushing and haulage on level 1045. At the present time, the total airflow for the mine is 1,600 m3/sec(3.4 million cfm). The current system serves the levels above the 775 level. The new one is for the levels between 775 and 1,085 m (2,540 and 3,560 ft), which are needed for the new ore body. When all of the production is below level 775, the old ventilation system will be closed down.

Economic conditions after WorId War II made the recovery of Australian sources of sulphur one of considerable national importance. From 1947 to 1949 an investigation was made of recirculation techniques to produce acid plant grade gas from the Dwight-Lloyd down-draught sintering plant.During 1949 it appeared feasible to produce a gas of suitable 802 concentration and a decision was made to construct a gas purification train and a 150 tons/day contact acid plant. However, a number of difficulties remained in the production of the gases for sulphuric acid manufacture and as a result of research conducted to overcome these troubles the continuous up-draught sintering process was developed.The principal difficulties were:(a:) The down-draught sintering practice, as developed, produced an unusually high metallic lead precipitation in the windboxes. The disposal of this lead interrupted sintering operations and the delivery of gas to the acid plant.(b) The production capacity of the existing sintering plant was fully extended and the adoption of recirculation of gases, in an endeavour to satisfy acid plant requirements, would probably reduce the plant production capacity.(c) The prevailing high temperature of water available for purification train cooling required a higher than...
