Crush pillars are widely used in mine workings on the Merensky Reef in the Bushveld Complex to prevent panel collapses. Crush pillars are expected to fail as or soon after they emerge from the face and failure should occur non-violently. Unfortunately, violent failure occurs frequently and is said to be the main cause of seismicity associated with mining of the Merensky Reef. Recent work by Napier, Malan, and du Plessis has shown that limitequilibrium quasi-static models are able to simulate pillar failure using three states of strength of rock in pillars, namely intact, residual after failure, and decayed strength after later time-dependent (viscous) weakening. We have previously introduced an additional state of strength to account for the dynamic failure that results in seismic events, and found that this approach could be used to generate synthetic seismic catalogues similar to observed seismicity for deep-level gold mines, where seismicity takes place mostly on advancing faces. The less brittle seam material of the Merensky Reef, compared to the brittle quartzites and lavas of the Witwatersrand reefs, results in little or no face bursting and is modelled with an assumed plastic strain of some 0.005 over an effective stope width of 2 m before failure. When this plastic yield is surpassed, we allow the reef to fail ?seismically?. We show that synthetic seismic catalogues modelled in this way have some of the features of observed seismicity. Analysis is greatly facilitated using our custom-built software that reads the mine?s survey data into a database and presents results in an interactive graphical form.

In March 2012 a combined BHP Billiton and Hatch team embarked on a program to improve the concentrate burner efficiency of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. A multi-faceted approach including an analysis of the furnace using operational knowledge and first principles engineering led to the design and supply of a new central-lance (disperser). A new, patented, swirl method of introducing the copper concentrate into the furnace was developed to integrate with the existing concentrate burner. Plant trials in 2014 demonstrated an increase of nearly 10 percent in the oxygen efficiency of the furnace. The improved efficiency is expected to provide savings in operating costs and asset life extension of downstream gas and dust handling equipment.CITATION:White, M, Haywood, R, Taylor, W, Chen, S, Ranasinghe, J and West, R, 2015. "The initial metallurgical response of the lead flotation circuit at Cominco Alaska's Red Dog Mine was substantially below feasibility expectations. A program of diagnostic mineralogical analysis pointed the way to a number of process improvements, including simplification of the flow sheet and installation of a large flotation column as a lead cleaner. A diagnostic mineralogical analysis of the improved circuit shows that inadvertent activation of both sphalerite and pyrite has been substantially reduced, resulting in significant improvements in metallurgical performance. Directions for further improvements to the circuit performance are suggested by the recent analysis.IntroductionRed Dog is a high-grade, sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposit with relatively simple mineralogy. The primary non-sulphide gangue minerals are quartz and barite, with minor barium carbonate (witherite). The iron sulphate minerals, siderotil, rosenite and copiapite occur variably throughout the deposit. Mineral texture is variable ranging from liberated sphalerite grains visible to the naked eye to intergrowths, particularly between sphalerite and galena, to less than ten microns. Both pyrite and marcasite are present. To date no enhanced reactivity of marcasite has been observed. For this discussion, ""pyrite"" will be used to refer to both iron sulphide minerals. In common with other sedex deposits, Red Dog contains organic and sulphur impurities."

Presplit blasting in strip mines is aimed at creating a safer wall to work under during the coaling operations. Good quality presplits are also necessary for effective throw blasting and drainage of the blast block. A less obvious but important function is full coal recovery. Optimum Colliery has been experiencing rock freezing against the presplit highwalls. The rock formed in patches along the highwall and trapped coal beneath it. The material that was &ozen comprised the rock between the back row of holes and the presplit and was often up to 3 m thick (the stand off distance between the back line and the presplit). The cozen rock formed predominantly along the bottom halfor bottom two thirds of the highwall. Along the top portion of the highwall, the presplit crack was usually well formed with visible barrels. This problem, or similar variations of it, is common on many South African strip-mine operations. Investigative work was carried out at Optimum Colliery to correct the problem. This paper presents the information and measurements that were made and discusses the solutions that have been applied to solve the problem. It was found that there were two independent causes for the tiozen material, with each contributing more or less to the frozen rock along the highwall. It was found that the presplit was not forming properly in places, especially closer to the bottom of the highwalls. The reasons and the solutions are presented. The second cause was found to be associated with reduced detonation velocity in the back line holes coupled with low confinement from long delay periods. Emulsion explosive that is sensitised with air bubbles was found to be prone to this phenomenon near the back of high-energy blasts. A change in the explosive formulation in the back-line holes, together with reduced delays in the back line, has resulted in significant improvements. The details are presented in this paper.

Federal regulations require that methane liberated at the face be diluted and removed to maintain methane gas concentrations below 1 pct (CFR) in working places and intake air courses. The delivery and distribution of intake air at the face is critical for effective face ventilation. Improved techniques for monitoring the movement of intake air to the face are needed. A test system was developed and a computer program written for using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer to measure airflow in a simulated mine entry. Results of tests conducted in the entry showed that the anemometer is a valuable tool for measuring mine airflow conditions near the face.

The Grand Isle sulfur mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, La. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Co. by the State of Louisiana which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the U.S. Department of the Interior after passage of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. The sulfur deposit was discovered in 1949 when Humble Oil & Refining Co. penetrated more than 200 ft of sulfur-bearing limestone in a zone between 1813 and 2075 ft below sea level. In 1954, Humble drilled ten more sulfur prospect holes, eight of which encountered sulfur ore. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Co. acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Co, the sulfur rights underlying the tracts, and the actual design of the installation began the same month. The first structural contract was awarded in December 1957 and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction has been completed and production by the Frasch process commenced in April 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30 million, of which $8 million is the extra cost incurred by the necessity of offshore operations. More than $22 million was expended before production was started. GEOLOGY OF DEPOSIT Grand Isle is the third largest sulfur deposit in the U.S. The orebody embraces several hundred acres, but its outer limits are yet to be defined to the northeast, east, and south. Most Gulf Coast sulfur deposits occur in a caprock mantle of calcite (referred to as limestone), anhydrite, and occasionally gypsum, which covers the apex of an intrusive mass of salt. Commercial quantities of sulfur are usually confined to the calcite or limestone member. Most often such limestone is completely enclosed by dense anhydrite below and impervious sediments above, which effectively form a closed reservoir. The depth of the Grand Isle orebody ranges from 1800 ft to 2500 ft below sea level. Within the present boundary, the sulfur-bearing limestone varies in thickness from 220 ft to 425 ft, while the sulfur content varies an average of about 15 pct in the leanest hole to an average of about 30 pct in the richest. Rock containing less than 5 pct sulfur is not classed as ore, and holes assaying less than 20,-000 long tons per acre of sulfur in place are not considered commercial offshore. The sulfur enrich-

"Granular activated carbon is widely used in the gold mining industry for gold extraction from aurocyanide-containing slurry. The extraction process can employ carbon as part of the gold recovery operation for various circuit designs including carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon-in-column (CIC), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuits. However, various qualities of activated carbon exist and the durability of the material can change significantly from source to source. Handling this expensive reagent can pose challenges when fine carbon losses occur in the CIP, CIC, and CIL circuits. Additionally, any gold that is adsorbed to these carbon fines can also be lost by various mechanisms including carbon attrition and fracturing, inefficient coarse-fine separation, and poor carbon fines capture. With the above in mind, a series of tests were conducted to investigate standardizing simple laboratory methods for testing carbon quality. A standard procedure beyond or enhancing ASTM methods can serve as additional starting points for evaluating carbon specific to the gold industry. The investigation focused on size distribution, flatness, wet attrition resistance, surface area, gold kinetics, and gold loading. The final results provided information to generate an equation for ranking carbon samples to plant performance.IntroductionActivated carbon for use in gold extraction is amongst the most commonly found processes in modern gold-milling plants. During the late 1990s Anglo American PLC was evaluating the Gamsberg zinc deposit in the Northern Cape Province. As the primary South African metallurgical technology provider, Mintek became involved in the evaluation of a pyrometallurgical process for the recovery of zinc from the Gamsberg deposit. eloping DC arc furnace technology for the metallurgical industry. This includes the patented Enviroplas® process for the treatment of zinc bearing waste materials. As a consequence Mintek has developed extensive expertise in the pyrometallurgical processing of zinc bearing materials. However, Mintek?s technologies stopped with the production of Prime Western Grade (PWG) zinc. Early on in the evaluation of the Gamsberg project, it became evident that the refining of PWG zinc would play an important part in the economic viability of the project. At the time the only pyrometallurgical technology available for the refining of PWG zinc to Special High Grade (SHG) zinc was the New Jersey process. This process represents 50-year-old technology and has not undergone significant refinement since the technology was developed. In order to provide a complete pyrometallurgical flow sheet for possible implementation at Gamsberg, Mintek assessed the New Jersey process with a view to either improving the technology or developing a new technology appropriate to the 21 century. In 1998 Mintek convened a consortium consisting of Mintek, the University of Cape Town, Eskom Enterprises, Bateman Metals and Anglo American PLC. The consortium successfully applied to the Innovation Fund for funding to develop a new process for the pyrometallurgical refining of PWG zinc to SHG zinc. The main aims of the project were to develop a new technology for pyrometallurgical zinc refining that conformed to the following: ?Decrease the production cost of SHG zinc metal to stimulate the development of the Gamsberg deposit. ?Be compatible with the current Enviroplas® process, preferably as an add-on to that process. ?Should use electrical energy to benefit from local price tariffs. The project commenced at the beginning of 2000 and consisted of three phases: ?an initial technology search and assessment of the fundamental aspects of zinc distillation. ?the design of a pilot plant for zinc refining. ?the manufacture, commissioning and operation of the pilot plant. A new technology based on a DC arc boiler feeding a packed distillation column was developed and during 2003 the project culminated in the successful operation of a 200 kg/h pilot plant. Ultimately, all of the aims of the project were met and the main outcome is that an advanced process for the pyrometallurgical refining of zinc (the Zincref process) has been developed. The main innovation of the technology was the switch from an energy transfer limited process to a mass transfer limited process (for which a patent has been registered).

Longwall mining began within the Pittsburgh coalbed of Pennsylvania (PA) in the early 1970?s. Originally, longwall mine layouts were designed to fit within existing room-and-pillar operations, where panels were limited to that of typical production panels, e.g. a few hundred feet wide by a few thousand feet long. In these early designs, the gate entries were comprised of chain pillars similar to those found along main entry systems or within pillar recovery sections. The modern longwall mine has little in common with their 1970?s predecessors. Today the entire mine layout is designed around the longwall mining method. The longwall panels have grown to well over one thousand feet in width with lengths now measured in miles. In addition, development pillar sizes and shapes are matched to specific performance requirements.

"Coal mining is a thriving industry and 53% of the coal mined in South Africa is used for electricity generation. Mechanization has made coal mining more efficient, but fines generation has subsequently increased. Up to 6% of the run of mine material can report to the -200 µm fraction. Common problems associated with fines handling include dust formation, storage problems, and high moisture levels. A method to turn this material into a saleable product instead of stockpiling it can add value to a company.Briquetting is a pressure agglomeration method where loose material is compacted into a dense mass (FEECO International, 2014). The briquettes must be able to withstand rigorous handling and transport operations without disintegrating. This study aims to investigate the optimum binder and moisture conditions required to produce a mechanically strong briquette using two different binders - a PVA powder (binder A) and a starch powder (binder B).It was found that for binder A the optimum moisture level was 12% to 14%. At this moisture level the greatest compression strength gains were observed, and low amounts of fines produced in impact and abrasion tests. The minimum amount of binder added while still obtaining a strong briquette was 0.5% binder A. For binder B the optimum moisture level was also 12% and the minimum amount of Binder B to be added was found to be 1%. Briquettes that were dried outside reached their peak strength after about four days, whereas the briquettes that dried inside took about 20 days to reach their strength plateau. Hardly any degradation took place on the surface of the binder A film after exposure of 300 hours of artificial weathering. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that neither binder A nor binder B will add to the ash content of the coal fines, as both binders totally decompose above 530°C.Binder B yielded stronger briquettes after 15 days and also generated less fines. A series of electron beam, cold hearth, single melt Ti-6Al-4V plates (nominally 2.5 cm thick) impacted by 2cm diameter, 4340 steel projectiles (with 54g nominal mass) at velocities ranging from 0.633 to 1.027 km/s were sectioned along the impact axis and examined by optical metallography to characterize the formation, growth, and microstructure of adiabatic shear bands. Near ballistic limit velocities, the shear bands propagate towards the rear of the target where they coalesce and grow to provide a cylindrical solid state flow regime for the plug volume.

MORE THAN 30 MILLION EMPLOYEES each year are exposed to hazardous occupational noise, and approximately one-third of them develop permanent hearing loss (NSC, 2000). Possible explanations for the latter statistic include worker regard for noise as a mere nuisance rather than as an occupational safety and health hazard, and consequent neglect of established protective measures (e.g., hearing protection); lack of knowledge concerning noise; improper use of hearing protection; worker indifference; and inadequate training (Bauer & Babich, 2004). Many drill rigs generate high sound levels, which vary according to the type of machine, its location with respect to the physical surroundings, and the location of the sound measured around the rig. A NIOSH study measured noise output from several types of drill rigs during field investigations (Ingram & Matetic, 2003). Two types of data were recorded the actual noise generated by the drill rig at various positions around the rig and the noise to which the drill operator was exposed during the drilling cycle. For the latter, sound level measurements up to 120 dBA were recorded while hammering casing (metal on metal) in drilling a water well (Photo 1). Several types of administrative controls exist to address worker exposure to loud drill rig noise. Rotating duties to decrease exposure time and posting warning signs in high-noise work areas are two such controls. Another is the use of hearing protection. Worker use of hearing protection has been disappointing, however. One study by the University of Michigan found that construction workers used earplugs and earmuffs only between 36% and 61% of the time that they were necessary (Lusk & Kerr, 1998). In a 2001 study, OSHA reported a relatively low rate of 30.4% for use of earplugs among construction workers (Walker, 2001). Why are rates for hearing protection use so low? One explanation may be workers' lack of concern for noise in the workplace. They expect workplace noise to be a loud and in¬ evitable nuisance and, therefore, accept it as part of the job. As a result, they disregard proven measures that can protect their hearing. Other workers may use hearing protection, but do so improperly. They may misguidedly remain in high-noise areas for extended periods thinking they are protected when in fact they are not. Other reasons for low use and/or misuse of hearing protection include poor education, lack of awareness and inadequate training (Nash, 2003). To address the training issue, NIOSH developed two exercises from which drillers can learn about noise, hearing loss and hearing protection. In order to make clear the dissolving characteristic of the chrysocolla (CuSiO3?H2O) in the ammonia-ammonium chloride solution, a thermodynamic model of the chrysocolla (CuSiO3?H2O)-ammonia- ammonium chloride-water system is established using the exponential computation method based on both mass balance and charge balance equations. The equation group of the thermodynamic model is solved by the MATLAB Soft on PC. The condition which is favorable for dissolving high concentration of copper in solution is making out. The stable area of chrysocolla (CuSiO3?H2O) and the condition of chrysocolla (CuSiO3?H2O) converting to atacamite (Cu(OH)1.5Cl0.5) is also studied. A group of experiments are designed to validate the veracity of the results of the thermodynamic calculation.

Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia?s underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for over twenty years. Mortality from Coal Workers? Pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in x-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. To understand this disparity, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among United States coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure, and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above observed differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not show any significant differences. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. Assuming that quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of advanced pneumoconiosis in the U.S., more effective dust control measures, as well an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, need to be implemented to prevent this potentially disabling condition.

"Alumina is the main source of aluminium and it is extracted almost exclusively from bauxite ores found in the Southern hemisphere. Clays are abundant minerals that contain from 15 to 40% w/w of alumina from which it can be extracted by various processes. This paper reviews the processes used for the extraction of alumina from clays and discusses results obtained with a clay sample from the Murdochville area in the Quebec Province. The application of a conventional process to this clay did not yield an acceptable recovery although smelter grade alumina was produced. A modification to the process allows increasing alumina recovery from 85% to more than 92%. The application of the improved flow sheet to other alumina carriers failed to yield comparable recovery, showing that an optimum processing path for the recovery of alumina should be found for individual clay materials.INTRODUCTIONMost of the aluminium smelters are fed with alumina extracted from bauxite found in the Southern hemisphere. Bauxite is processed by the Bayer process that uses a caustic leach of the ore. In the middle of the century, the US Bureau of mines, motivated by the fear of an alumina delivery disruption, conducted several research projects aiming at producing alumina from non bauxitic ores. These projects led to the development of various acid leaching processes (Habashi, 1993). The sulphuric and hydrochloric acid leaching processes were brought to pilot plant evaluation (Bengtson, 1979), while nitric and other leach liquors were tested in the laboratory (Phillips and Wills, 1982; Habashi, 1983). Although clays are abundant and inexpensive minerals, the studied processes remained uncompetitive with the alumina extraction from bauxite (Hudson, 1987 page 42; Peters et al., 1962) for which reserves are estimated to support alumina production for the next 50 years (Oye et al., 1999). On the other hand, the local extraction of alumina from clays could significantly reduce the transportation costs of alumina to smelters and provide an alternative source of alumina supply from the Southern hemisphere countries. Also, the extraction of secondary products for some types of clay (Nasyrov et al., 1999) containing significant amounts of potassium and sodium could provide an additional return that may improve the economics of alumina production from clays."

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2008 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry, and presents analyses of exploration activities by the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2008: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia (Metals Economics Group, 2008a, b), and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2008 and compiled by the USGS. The MEG information summarizes planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2008, primarily for precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver) and base metals (copper, lead, nickel and zinc). MEG includes information on additional mineral commodities only where it is available. Information on uranium exploration was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007, although this information was not included in the USGS analysis. The MEG survey methodology was changed in 1999 to include companies with exploration budgets between $100,000 and $2.9 million, as well as those companies included in prior studies whose anticipated budgets were above $2.9 million. MEG estimates that its post-1999 surveys cover at least 90 percent of world nonferrous nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 2008 survey is reported by MEG to cover an estimated 95 percent. Companies that chose not to participate in the MEG study, private companies that do not publish data, and government-funded exploration activities make up the majority of the remaining 5 percent. MEG included 91 more companies in its 2008 survey than it did in 2007 USGS compilations of site data described here primarily include nonfuel minerals, with an emphasis on base metals, diamond and precious metals. Analyses are based on information provided by USGS mineral commodity and country specialists and by other USGS scientists, as well as industry contacts and trade journals.

At San Manuel, AZ, Magma Metals Co. operates an Outokumpu flash furnace, four Peirce-Smith converters and two anode casting wheels that are supported by six anode vessels. Process gasses from the flash furnace and converters are treated in a two-train/ double-contact sulfuric acid plant. The plant captures 98% of the sulfur. A new flash furnace was commissioned in July 1988. It has since processed more than 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of sulfide concentrate without a major rebuild. The company has gained unique experience in the operation of the flash furnace at high oxygen enrichments with low off-gas dust loadings. New procedures have been developed to maintain secondary material generation at equilibrium and for maintaining metallurgical control of operating parameters. Process flow description At Magma's San Manuel plant, concentrates and other copper-bearing material are blended and conveyed from two separate areas of the plant to three 420 t (465 st) capacity wet charge bins located above the rotary dryer. Flash furnace silica flux is conveyed to a 227-t (250-st) capacity fine flux bin located adjacent to the wet charge bins. The concentrate and flux are blended in controlled amounts and fed into a 168-t/ h (185-stph) gas-fired rotary dryer. The wet charge enters the dryer at 8% moisture and is dried to 0.2% moisture. The dried charge is pneumatically conveyed to a 580-t/h (640-stph) dry charge bin located above the flash furnace. Flash furnace charge is drawn from the bin by two drag conveyors at a concentrate feed rate of 145 t/h (160 stph). The charge is mixed with enriched combustion air and injected into the furnace reaction shaft. In the reaction shaft, the charge is oxidized to form matte, slag and a rich SO, off-gas.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk either at concentrator commissioning, or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-Confidence Flotation Testing was developed for this purpose, and is part of the list of technologies of various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of practice and continuous improvement with this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to this method and complementary connections into sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. IN all wet concentration processes it is of primary importance to determine to what degree the crushing must be carried in order to obtain the maximum profit per ton of ore milled.To effect a clean separation, either by gravity or flotation treatment, between either one valuable sulphide from another, or a sUlphide from the gangue, the ore must have been subjected to grinding to such an extent that the particles to be separated are completely liberated from each other.Insufficient crushing will result in either an incomplete separation of the sulphides from each other, and thus a loss of the one sulphide in the other, or else a loss of the valuable sulphide in the gangue.This being so, the question arises whether the added cost of extra crushing would be economically warranted by the increased recovery consequent on such a step.

O ar soprado é uma das principais utilidades responsáveis pelo processo de transformação do minério de ferro em gusa no Auto Forno. Para que ocorra o processo de redução o ar soprado é superaquecido nos regeneradores dos autos fornos a uma temperatura de 1.300°C. Este energético é fornecido na CSN-UPV pelos turbos sopradores da Central Termoelétrica nº 2 (CTE#2), área dos Motos Sopradores 1 e 2 e os turbos sopradores n°1 e 3 da CTE#1 que operam com a velocidade reduzida 24 horas soprando para atmosfera e consumindo vapor de 30Bar. Devido à obsolescência do sistema de ar soprado da CTE#1, alto custo de operação e risco para a segurança operacional, este trabalho apresenta o estudo do problema em questão, a metodologia utilizada para desativação do ar soprado da CTE-1 e a redução de custo.
