This bulletin is the third of the series of yearly petroleum bibliographies being published by the Bureau of Mines. The two preceding, Bulletin 149 and Bulletin 165, were for the years 1915 and 1916, respectively. In arranging the references the same general scheme has been followed, but as in those bulletins, several changes and additions have been made in the classifica.tion, the more important being in the classes " Development and production " and "Refining and refineries." German periodicals for 1917 were not procurable and references to articles in those and in other foreign journals that were not available have been credited to the sources from which they were procured.

This chapter deals with the systems of laws by which governments regulate the exploration for and production of the minerals within their jurisdictions. It is a summary, restricted by necessary space limitations, of material assembled by the author for a publication of the United States Bureau of Mines, "Summary of Mining and Petroleum Laws of the World," (Information Circular 80 1 7, 196 1. ) The present study is organized in three parts, dealing with (1) the historical background of these legal systems, (2) laws of the United States, and (3) laws of other countries of the world. The reader's attention is invited to the acknowledgments at the end of the chapter, which inadequately express the appreciation due those who have assisted in the collection of this material. Part I. Historical Development of Major Western Systems of Land Tenancy with Respect to the Ownership and Control of Minerals The use of metals in primitive societies was largely confined to the manufacture of weapons for self-preservation. The ruler's control over copper, then bronze, then iron, was essential to maintenance of his own ascendancy at home and his group's position against neighbors who had access to similar metals. Ancient societies were thus characterized by the ruling group's ownership of minerals and metals. The Egyptian civilization, which emerged in the fourth millenium B.C. upon the agricultural subjugation of the lower valley of the Nile, was responsible for extensive development of the upper valley as a source of mineral wealth. The production of gold during the height of that civilization has been estimated at $30,000,000 per year, thus equaling the early placers of California and Australia. The mines of Egypt were the property of the Pharaohs and were controlled at their direction. Greek mining developed a different scheme of land tenancy which more closely resembled modem concepts. Recientemente Southern Perú desarrolló un nuevo proyecto donde se modernizaba la planta de Fundicion y se reemplazaba el convencional horno reverbero por la tecnología del ISASMELT, capturando más del 92% de los gases generados durante el proceso de fusión de los concentrados de cobre. En ese sentido, el presente texto describo los efectos de la modernización de la Fundición sobre la calidad anódica. Antes de la modernización de la Fundición, los ánodos fueron producidos en la planta de ánodos ubicada en la Refinería de Cobre de Ilo. Ahora los ánodos son producidos directamente en la Fundición y como resultado, la composición química de los ánodos ha cambiado, principalmente en el contenido de bismuto, antimonio, plomo y zinc, siendo diferentes a los parámetros de diseño original de la Refinería. Asimismo, este factor impulsó a revisar el proceso de remoción de impurezas y los parámetros de la refinación electrolítica en la Refinería para evitar la contaminación del cobre refinado, logrando mantener la continuidad de la producción de cátodos de cobre de alta calidad superando los estándares interna-cionales de la norma ASTM-B115.

"Effective control of metallurgy by manual adjustment of cell levels is common flotation practice. With an on-stream XRF analyzer interfaced to a process control computer it is possible to program the computer to carry out this function automatically. This paper describes the development and implementation of closed loop control of the concentrate and tailing grades at the Clarabelle Mill of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, The XRF analyzer was used as the sensor, cell level as the control and the computer as the controller.IntroductionThe International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited recently brought on-stream Clarabelle Mill having a rated capacity of 35,000 tons per day. The plant was required to increase milling capacity in the Sudbury area by 9,000 tons per day and to improve milling efficiencies by replacing the obsolete crushing and grinding equipment at the Copper Cliff Mill. This represents the fourth mill built since 1959 and incorporates the latest thinking in a continuing evolution of instrumentation and control concepts. Table 1 illustrates control progress at Inco since 1959.In 1967 Frood-Stobie Mill came on-stream incorporating a central control room, an on-stream analyzer, a data gathering computer, and a significant change in instrumentation from direct-contacted pneumatic to miniature electronic. The computer successfully controls the analyzer but has very limited process control capability. Based on this experience a process control computer system was installed at Clarabelle Mill with the objective of carrying out extensive supervisory control and a limited amount of direct digital control."

Energy efficiency has become significant due to cost and environmental considerations. Comminution and material handling have been identified as the two most energy intensive processes in mining. The objective of this work was to evaluate truck-shovel energy efficiency strategies using discrete event modeling. Energy audits and time and motion studies were conducted at a surface coal mine to acquire data. A discrete event simulation model of truck-shovel operations was built in Arena® and validated with the field data. The model was used to evaluate the effect of using a larger shovel, and optimizing truck-shovel matching on fuel efficiency. The results indicate that using a larger excavator increases the fuel efficiency of the operation while optimizing truck-shovel matching does not. However, using a larger shovel will lead to under-utilization of the shovel. This work shows the potential benefits of using discrete event simulation to model energy efficiency of mining operations.

Helium has probably aroused more varied scientific curiosity than any other single element. Discovered by spectroscopic examination of the sun during an eclipse in 1868, helium is now known to exist not only in the sun and other stars but on earth occluded in minerals, accumulated with natural gases in pockets in the earth's crust, and in the atmosphere surrounding the earth. Astronomers study its presence in the various stars of the universe for clues to their origin and history. Geochemists and geologists study its occurrences in rocks, minerals, and meteorites to determine the age of the earth and the manner of its formation. Pathologists study its effect on living tissues in search for the ideal combination with oxygen for artificial breathing mixtures in medicine, diving operations, and space vehicles. Chemists study its physical properties and use it to trace the sequence of events in reactions in which it does not participate. Geneticists and bacteriologists use it for special studies. Physicists study its behavior when liquefied and the behavior of materials cooled to nearly absolute zero by its use. Nuclear physicists learn more about the universe through study of the nuclear reactions that produce it. Through study of helium and greater knowledge of its origin and properties, science continues to unlock some of nature's more closely guarded secrets. Unknown on earth before 1895, and not discovered as a minor constituent of natural gas until 1905, helium with its simple atomic structure--a nucleus with two electrons orbiting in a closed shell--is a unique element. It is next to the lightest gas, only hydrogen is lighter. It occupies position number 2 in the Periodic Table of the Elements and heads the list of so-called "rare" or ?noble? gases. Most of the naturally occurring helium has an atomic mass of 4.003874 (oxygen = 16). A trace (1.7 x 10-5 mol percent) is the light isotope helium-3 whose atomic mass is 3.0169800 Unstable isotopes of mass numbers 5 and 6 have been authenticated. Isotopes of mass numbers 7 and 8 have been reported, but their existence is less well established. All the heavier isotopes are radioactive and are the product of nuclear reactions.

Potassium ferrate is an excellent multifunctional reagent for wastewater treatment, but its preparation is crucial. The improved hypochlorite oxidation method was used to prepare potassium ferrate in this study. Iron nitrate, the preferred iron source, was added into hypochlorite solution and then the stabilization agent was added during the purification process of product. The influence of available chlorine content, iron molecular proportion, reaction temperature and reaction time on potassium ferrate preparation was investigated. The optimal condition for potassium ferrate preparation is 15% of available chlorine content , 0.6 of iron molecular proportion , 30i of reaction temperature , 45min of reaction time. The yield of potassium ferrate is about 67% with high purity (> 99%). The structure and performances of the product was characterized by XRD, EDX, SEM, TG and IR and the results show that the prepared product is consistent with the properties of potassium ferrate(VI).

The calculation of the dose to the bronchial epithelium, lungs and other body tissues from exposures to airborne radon and thoron daughters requires a knowledge of the pattern of deposition in the respiratory system and clearance from it. Exposure to radon or thoron daughters is measured in units of Working Level Months (WLM), which is independent of the aerosol particle size, the fraction of daughters that are attached to the aerosol and the degree of disequilibria between the daughters, and age and breathing rate of the subject. These factors will influence the deposition and clearance, and hence dose. It is therefore of interest to find the relationship between WLM and calculated dose as a function of aerosol size, unattached fraction, and disequilibria, and of age and breathing rate, and to define ranges for these parameters for which WLM is an acceptable measure of the risk. This presentation briefly reviews the two dosimetry models being considered by a current Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) Working Group, and using these models, defines limits on parameters for which the WLM is applicable.

The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.

SPONGE IRON has been defined as the metallic product formed by the reduction (removal of combined oxygen) of iron ore or other iron oxides at temperatures below the fusion point of iron. This product probably derived the name "sponge iron" from its porous nature. When the reduction proceeds at slightly higher temperatures and the particles of metal weld together or finally even melt to yield pellets or balls that lack the porosity and low-density characteristic of sponge iron, the product might more correctly be called "direct iron."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.

"The adoption of high-pressure grinding throughout the cement industry has yielded enormous savings in energy and wear material costs. There are also a number of installations, which are applied in iron ore and kimberlite processing operations. High pressure grinding offers the same potential for energy and media savings, as well as opportunities for improved, downstream metallurgical performance, in hard rock mineral processing. This paper focuses on developments in machine design and wear surface engineering for high-pressure grinding of the hard rock ores in the mineral processing industry.INTRODUCTIONIn the early eighties 3.4 % of the world electric energy was consumed for crushing and grinding operations of minerals and 0.6 % in the ore dressing industry. During that time using a laboratory press Prof. Schönert found that interparticle comminution at high pressure requires remarkably less energy as conventional grinding technologies. In grinding of cement clinker he expected energy savings between 33 and 50 % compared to ball mills [1]. Piston presses are limited in throughput. Thus, the principle of interparticle comminution was adapted by the use of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) to a continuous plant process. Figure 1 shows the main components of a roller press: The roller nip of width s is formed between the floating roller (1) and the fixed roller (2). The diameter of the rolls will be denoted with D, the width with B. The total press force F can be adjusted using a hydraulic system with two or four pistons (3). Cortez Gold Mines is completing a Feasibility Study for a new open pit gold mine in north central NV. The production schedule calls for a peak in material movement. This schedule is based on current operational efficiencies and equipment parameters observed at the company’s existing open pit operation. To mitigate risks of over/under predicting production, simulation modeling was used to validate the loading and haulage requirements during the peak production period. The advantage of simulation is the ability to provide a realistic model of a mining operation based on scheduled, and unscheduled random events during the period under analysis.

Pese a tener cajas sólidas en su estructura, algunas vetas desarrollan un relleno frágil, ocasionando problemas futuros de sostenimiento para el "corte y relleno" de los mismos. Por ello, se utilizó el método de los "Square Sets", donde además de ser costoso, implicaba eliminar una proporción de la roca encajonante y diluía el contenido metálico de los filones. En ese sentido, el objetivo del texto es señalar la viabilidad del "método Cornish"como método alternativo, económico, de rendimiento óptimo y que no presenta riesgos para el personal o la labor realizada. Este método es aplicable en aquellas vetas uniformes no falladas, que tengan desde una potencia pequeña hasta aquella que sea posible apuntalar, así como en aquellas que requieran sostenimiento del techo en la veta mima o donde se realizen Shrinkages. El proceso del método se basa en la preparación de los tajeos, luego en la explotación(perforación y disparos), enmaderado, relleno del tajeo, recuperación de madera, las variantes en la preparación del tajeo y la recuperación del mineral. La única desventaja que ofrece este método es su peligrosidad, dado que si se aplica en zonas inadecuadas o sin la supervisión que garantice el cumplimiento de las normas preventivas, es preferible el uso de los "Square Sets". Sin embargo, la aplicación del método resulta mucho más productiva en rendimiento teórico puesto que alcanza de 7 a 10 toneladas por tarea de 8 horas y responde satisfactoriamente siempre y cuando las condiciones de las vetas lo permita.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to determine the feasibility of water diversion and overburden dewatering for underground coal mines in the Appalachian Region. All relevant published literature pertaining to the occurrence and control of surface and groundwater in underground coal mines was reviewed and organized into a bibliography. The impacts of mine water with respect to health and safety, production, environment, and costs were assessed. Sources of water inflow into underground mines were described. A summary description and evaluation of techniques that can be used to reduce the amount of water entering underground coal mines was prepared. A review of engineering practices currently used by operating coal mines in the Appalachian region to prevent the movement of ground and surface water into active coal workings was conducted. Major emphasis was placed on the identification of the geologic and hydrologic con¬dition of the site, onsite inspection of the methods used and an evaluation of their technical and cost effectiveness.

Leaching experiments were carried out on a spent catalyst sample with a honeycomb structure, containing 47.5% Ti, 5.8% Mo, 2.7% Si, 2 035 ppm As, 52 ppm Pb and 8.8 ppm Hg. More than 93% of the Mo and As was removed by direct alkaline leaching after grinding to 80% -36 micrometres. The residue contained 0.3% Mo and 60 ppm As. To obtain a TiO2 matrix with 30 ppm As, acid leaching at controlled pH with 90 kg/t Al scrap was followed by oxidising alkaline leaching. Treatment of the direct alkaline leach solution or of the mixed solutions from the two-stage process involved two successive operations: purification by neutralisation with Al(OH)3 addition to raise the Al concentration to 4 g/l, and ion exchange on Amberlite IRA 94 S resin. Whatever the type of solution treated, elution with 200 g/l NH4OH solution gave an eluate of very high purity containing 164 g/l Mo, less than 70 mg/l V and less than 2 mg/l As

SUMMARY: The effects of blasting on structures are assessed on the basis of the maximum amplitudes of the occuring vibration velocities. If the standard values in the German Standard DIN 4150 are not exceeded, damages to structures are not to be expected. The estimation of the maximum vibration amplitudes is usually based on experience or on emperical formulae. However, a comparison of expected with measured values shows that these estimations are not conservative, particulary in case of small distances between blasting locations and structures. More reliable predictions are possible on the basis of numerical analyses, which simulate the three-dimensional propagation of waves with consideration of the geomechanical and geometrical conditions. In addition to the expected velocities, these analyses also allow the determination of stresses resulting from dynamic loading. If the dynamic stresses are known, the effects of blasting on structures can be predicted. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Auswirkungen sprengbedingter Erschütterungen auf bauliche Anlagen werden in der Praxis auf der Grundlage der Maximalamplituden der auftretenden Schwinggeschwindigkeiten beurteilt. In der DIN 4150 werden Anhaltswerte angegeben, bei deren Einhaltung Schäden von Gebäuden nicht zu erwarten sind. Die Abschätzung dieser Schwing-geschwindigkeiten erfolgt meist auf der Grundlage von Erfahrungswerten oder empirischer Formeln. Der Vergleich der prognostizierten Werte mit Meßergebnissen zeigt jedoch, daß diese Ansätze insbesondere dann, wenn die Abstände zwischen den Sprengorten und den Gebäuden gering sind, nicht konservativ sind. Zuverlässigere Prognosen sind auf der Grundlage von numerischen Berechnungen möglich, in denen die räumliche Ausbreitung von Erschütterungen unter Berücksichtigung der geomechanischen und geometrischen Verhältnisse simuliert wird. Mit derartigen Berechnungen können die zu erwartenden Schwinggeschwindigkeiten und die aus der dynamischen Beanspruchung resultierenden Spannungen ermittelt werden. Dies ermöglicht Aussagen über die Auswirkungen sprengbedingter Erschütterungen auf Bauwerke. RÉSUMÉ: Les conséquences de vibrations résultantes d'explosions pour des bâtiments sont estimés dans la pratique à partir des amplitudes maximales des vitesses d'oscillation. Dans la norme allemande DIN 4150 des valeurs d'orientation sont données, avec l'observation desquelles de dommage à des bâtiments n'est pas à présumer. Ces vitesses d'oscillation sont estimés généralement à partir de valeurs d'expérience ou de formules empiriques. La comparaison des valeurs prédits avec des résultats de mesures montre cependant que ces hypothèses ne sont pas conservateurs, en particulier si les distances entre les lieux de sautage et les bâtiments sont petites. Des prédictions plus fiables sont possibles à partir de calculs numériques, dans lesquelles la dissipation spatiale de vibrations est simulée en considération de la situation géoméchanique et géométrique. Avec tels calculs les vitesses de vibration à présumer et les contraintes résultantes de l'effort dynamique peuvent être établies. Cela permet de constater sur les conséquences de vibrations résultantes d'explosions pour des bâtiments.
