Full-scale stopping and simulated over- cast structures were constructed in large opening (30 ft high by 55 ft wide) room and pillar excavations in an oil shale mine. The program was undertaken to develop construction techniques and to generate data on structure costs and leakage rates. Leakage rates were measured using both sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas and "brattice window" methods at varying differential pressures. The measurements were conducted before and after a full-scale face blast to characterize the effects of blasting on leakage, and blast air pressures were measured across the stoppings. The operating performance of different combinations of permanent and temporary stoppings was evaluated by developing an operating model for a two-panel oil shale mine. The operating performance for the different stopping combinations was then compared to the system cost to evaluate the overall performance.

Three substrates (MgO crystal, CaF2 crystal and Mg plate) were used to construct thin layers of Mg(OH)2. Various routes were used to modify these substrates, including surface hydration and sol-gel coating. In each case, it was found (by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) that thin layers of Mg(OH)2 could be produced. In the case of hydrated layers, the surface morphology of the Mg(OH)2 resembles the bulk platelet shape of precipitated Mg(OH)2.

The need for a product dewatering step between the milling/classification and leach/carbon stages of gold plants has traditionally been performed by thickeners. Whether these be the 'conventional' or 'high-rate' types both require considerable initial capital outlay even without provision for standby facilities. In addition, their sensitivity (both mechanically and metallurgically) to changing feed conditions often results in these being considered 'high-risk' items of equipment, requiring a high degree of attention from operating personnel.

The article cited above reflects the difficulty that is often encountered in interpreting different aspects of kriging. Baafi et al. write: "Due to negative kriging weights, negative block grades may be obtained in some extreme situations, which makes no practical sense." Their solution to this particular problem is to constrain the kriged estimates to data values that have positive weights, i.e., reduce the subset size contributing to the estimation. As Journel (1986, p. 133) has already observed, "Negative weights are no evil." Indeed, they are an ineluctable result of the Lagrangian multipliers in the system of simultaneous equations. The fact that data distant from the estimation point may be given negative weights simply means that the influence of such distant values must be negated because their influence is contradictory to closer values (as illustrated by Baafi et al. in their Figs. 3 and 4). Of course negative kriging weights applied to distant grade values will not in themselves induce negative grade at some central interpolation point. Negative grade values, rather, seem to be a particular artifact of automatic methods of estimation involving accumulations (Philip and Watson, 1985a, 1985b, 1987b). The elimination of negative weights, suggested by Baafi et al., is likely to exacerbate a quite different problem of kriging and piecewise spline interpolation discussed elsewhere (Philip and Watson, 1987a). In interpolating large data sets of scattered observations, changing local subsets or neighborhoods must be selected automatically. Because of the mathematical formulation of kriging and spline interpolation, discontinuities then occur between closely-spaced estimation points as the subset used in the estimation changes. If this subset is reduced in number and size, the discontinuities will be amplified and more common.

INTRODUCTION In 1957, diamond drilling on a magnetic anomaly indicated an extensive zone of copper mineralization on what is now the Craigmont Mines property. By mid¬1958, drilling established a copper ore body. Milling commenced in September 1961 at 4536 t/d (5000 stpd) and by the end of October 1977 the mine had produced 339 662.04 t (374,363.9 st) of copper. At present, two-thirds of the mill feed is derived from underground operations and one-third from low-grade surface stockpiles. Craigmont Mines is situated 209 km (130 air miles) northeast of Vancouver (see Fig. 1), 16 km (10 miles) west of the town of Merritt, a logging, ranching, and mining community of about 7000 people. It is serviced by paved highways, Canadian Pacific Railway, British Columbia Hydro, and Inland Natural Gas Co. Water is pumped from the Nicola River, a distance of 6 km (4 miles) and a lift of 244 m (800 ft). In March 1967, the open pit mining operations at Craigmont Mines reached their economic limit and were suspended. Before this, it had been decided that a sub¬level caving method of underground mining would be used to supply ore to the concentrator after the cessation of open pit production. This chapter describes the fac¬tors influencing the choice of mining method, some of the problems encountered, mining practices, and results. GEOLOGY The ore bodies of upper Triassic age are located in a limy horizon striking east-west, closely paralleling the intrusive Guichon batholith, bounded on the south by rhyolites and on the north by graywackes, and dipping steeply to the south (Figs. 2a, b). The ore bodies are relatively narrow with a maxi¬mum width of 79 m (260 ft), a combined strike length of 853 m (2800 ft), and a vertical extent of 610 m (2000 ft). Chalcopyrite is virtually the only copper mineral, and 20% of the ore zone consists of acid solu¬ble magnetite and hematite. The area has been subjected to considerable faulting and brecciation, which is a major factor in the mining operation. Total geological reserves, at 0.7% Cu cutoff, for the deposit were 22 316 743 t (24,600,000 st) at 1.89% Cu. An additional 5 236 270 t (5,772,000 st) at 0.6% Cu were mined from the open pit. Ground Conditions The waste rocks-graywacke, andesites, and diorite -are relatively incompetent due to the high degree of fracturing and jointing, and all require varying degrees of support. The ore zones are somewhat less fractured; ground support is still required, however, although to a lesser extent than in the country rock. Ground conditions in the main ore body are better than in the smaller, nar¬rower ore bodies. Clayey fault gouge is present in most of the faults; gouge zones may be up to 6 or 9 m (20 or 30 ft) wide. The main ground problems are associated with local weakness rather than pressure. Shape of Ore Bodies (Figs. 2a, b and 3a, b) The main No. 1 ore body is approximately 244 m (800 ft) long and 46 m (150 ft) wide. It extends ver¬tically from the original top of the open pit at 4200 ele¬vation to just below the 3060 level. The No. 2 ore body is approximately 304 m (1000 ft) long, varies from stringer width at the extremities up to 79 m (260 ft) wide, and extends from 3060 level to 2400 level. Both these ore bodies have extensions re¬sulting in additional small irregular bodies. Ore bodies are mostly steep dipping, though part of the Wing ore body, an extension of No. 2 ore body, dips at 0.87 rad (50'). This ore body varies in size, but is approximately 122 m (400 ft) long, 21 m (70 ft) wide, and about 213 m (700 ft) high. No. 1 Limb ore body is a narrow extension of the No. I Main with a vertical extent of 137 m (450 ft), average width of 18 ft (60 ft), a strike length of 152 m (500 ft), and dips steeply at 1.4 rad (80°). No. 1 East is an eastern extension of the No. 1 Main with a vertical extent of 183 m (600 ft), a strike length of 91 m (300 ft), an average width of 30 m (100 ft), and dips at 1.2 to 1.4 rad (70 to 80°). No. 1 South is at the upper west end of the open pit with a vertical extent of 76 m (250 ft), a strike length

Introduction Heavy media separation (HMS), also called dense media or float¬sink separation, is one of the newer forms of gravity concentration. Though the concept can be traced to the last century, the process has enjoyed its major growth since 1940. Heavy liquid separation is a mutation. The heavy media process is used extensively to clean coal and for the concentration of a wide variety of ores such as those of iron, lead-zinc, chrome, manganese, tin, tungsten, fluorspar, magnesite, sylvite, garnet, diamonds, gravel, etc. It may be used where ever a significant density difference occurs between two minerals, and commercial separations are typically made in the range of 1.3 to 3.8 sp gr. The particle size treated ranges downward from 6-8 in. top size. Particles greater than about 1/16-in. (10 mesh) may be treated in a "static" bath, though for reasons of separation efficiency, + 1/2 -in- feed is usually preferred. For particles less than this size, separation in a heavy media cyclone is generally used. The flowsheet of a typical heavy media process, in this case one using a ferrous medium, is shown in Fig. I. In essence, the process consists of: (1) preparation of the feed usually by wet screening to remove undesired fines, (2) heavy medium separation, and (3) removal and recovery of the medium from the separated products. Many muta¬tions of the basic scheme are possible and numerous options are possi¬ble. HMS offers the following potential advantages:12 1) Ability to make sharp separations. 2) Ability to change the specific gravity of separation quickly to meet changing conditions. 3) Ability to remove products continuously. 4) Ability to treat a broad size range of products. 5) Ease of start-up and shutdown without loss of separating efficiency. 6) Relatively low medium cost and low media losses. 7) Low operating and maintenance costs. 8) High capacity with the use of relatively little floor space. 9) Relatively low capital investment per ton of capacity. The process may be used to produce a finished concentrate, two finished concentrates, or a concentrate and a middling of differing quality, or a preconcentrate by rejection of unwanted gangue. It is an ideal method for the reprocessing of coarse waste dumps. The greatest use for the process lies in coal cleaning and in the preconcentration of ores. The relatively inexpensive heavy media process may be used advantageously to reject large quantities of coarsely crushed gangue. When used in this way, the process will allow: (1) the use of lower cost but less selective mining methods with the "overbreak" material being removed at the front end of the concentrator or preparation plant; (2) a substantial reduction in the quantity of ore that must be finely ground for subsequent mineral liberation and separa¬tion. Since comminution is often the single most expensive step in beneficiation, it is desirable to eliminate as many essentially barren pieces of rock as possible before the grinding step, (3) a decrease in overall plant capital cost per ton of concentrate since the size of the plant from the dense medium step onward will be smaller. Several general references are available,12-18 though much of the technical data on the process is widely scattered in the general litera¬ture. Heavy Liquid Separation Organic Liquids Given sufficient settling time, it is possible to make a perfect separa¬tion between two particles of differing density by placing them in a liquid whose density is intermediate between the two. This means of achieving a perfect separation has proven to be elusive because of problems in feed preparation, particle settling rates, operational considerations, and economic constraints. There are a wide variety of heavy liquids that could be used, most of them halogenated hydrocarbons, and a few typical examples are given in Table 4. These liquids are most commonly used in ore dressing for the laboratory fractionation of ore particles on the basis of specific gravity. Laboratory Separations. Using liquids typified by those given in Table 4, separations are made to develop either the standard washability curves used to estimate the response of a given sample to gravity concentration or to prepare a partition curve to evaluate the effective¬ness of a given gravity separation process or piece of equipment. A typical washability curve is given in Fig. 2.19 Such curves are generated for raw coal, e.g., by treating either the whole or various size fractions of the sample in a series of heavy liquids and analyzing the various specific gravity fractions so produced. The procedure is relatively simple for coal samples because of the ready availability of a wide variety of relatively low cost heavy liquids in the density range 1.2¬-2.0. For ores the problem is much more complicated, because only a few high density liquids, all of rather high cost, are available. Parti¬tion curves are generated in the same manner by treating the separated products in the same liquids. Greater details on the procedures to be used in heavy liquid separa¬tions are to be found in the literature (for coal, Refs. 13, 14 and 19 and for ore, Refs. 20 and 21). For testing coal, calcium and zinc chloride solutions have been used extensively in the past, though today halogenated hydrocarbons (available under the trade name Certigrav) are the preferred media. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Open cut-and-fill stoping for many years was prob¬ably the most widely used mining method in under¬ground metal mines. Then for a time this method was largely supplanted by the blasthole stope. It again be¬came popular as many mines reached depths or grades where methods requiring large open voids to remain open for extended periods of time became unsuccessful, often as a result of excessive dilution. The open cut-and-fill method is very flexible and is readily adaptable to almost any ore body. The standard application requires that a slice of ore usually 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) thick be removed from the back of the stope, and as the ore is taken down, the back is dressed and rockbolted. After the back is secured, the broken rock is removed through rock passes to the level below. When the rock has been removed, the rock passes are extended upward the height of the ore removed, the stope is backfilled, and another cycle is mined. This method is best employed in plunging ore bod¬ies with considerable vertical extent, ore areas that re¬quire selective mining, ore areas where weak wall con¬ditions exist, and ore bodies that have an ore value that will carry this relatively expensive mining method. Blast¬hole stoping, shrinkage stoping, and other mining meth¬ods that do not employ rock passes in a stope are not efficient in plunging or flatly dipping ore bodies because the footwall makes ore removal quite difficult. Since mining is accomplished by taking down slices of the back, only small areas of the wall rock are exposed at any one time, and these only for short periods. Due to limited back height, areas of uneconomic rock may be left in place, or they may be mined and the material gobbed in the stope. Because the miners in the stope must work under freshly blasted areas, the amount of ground control is usually great. The volume of rock that is broken during one section of mining is relatively small and the amount of nonproductive work required is high. This results in limited productivity for the scope and, be¬cause of the nonproductive work that must be done on a regular basis, the production from the stope may be quite cyclical. SUITABLE ORE BODIES The open cut-and-fill method may be adapted to al¬most any type of ore body with a relatively high vertical extent. The ore body must be accessible at both top and bottom as well as at regular intervals throughout its vertical extent. Although adaptable to most ore bodies, the method is probably best employed where the ore has poor con¬tinuity and where most types of bulk mining would pro¬duce excessive dilution. In areas of poor ore continuity, the capability of continuous and extensive sampling dur¬ing the mining of each cycle makes this method very desirable. This capability also minimizes the amount of evaluation sampling that must be done before mining is started. Because of the extractive system used, the size and shape of the stope may be as readily changed as the sampling mandates. Probably the only ore characteristic demanded is that the ore has strength enough to be sup¬ported through the use of rockbolts or cable bolts dur¬ing the mining and backfilling cycles. Good planning, systematic sampling, and careful supervision will pro¬duce a product with less dilution than any other open stoping method. PLANNING Evaluation Planning Once it has been decided that the open cut-and-fill method would be the most efficient for mining a par¬ticular ore body, the next considerations would probably be the availability of an economical backfill material and the selection of an efficient transport system for this material. Although hydraulically transported mill tail¬ings are the most widely used product, this is not always practical due to mill location or the quality of the tailings. In such cases, backfilling may be used. The type of backfill and the type of equipment used will determine if a floor or capping on the backfill is required to minimize dilution during ore removal. The early selection of rock removal equipment is im¬portant since equipment usually determines the amount of development work required to bring a stope into pro¬duction and the size of the openings needed. The size and continuity of the ore body will usually determine the type of loading equipment. The use of slushers or load¬haul-dump (LHD) equipment captive in the stopes will minimize the amount of development. If the ore con¬tinuity is such that a ramp system for extraction can be used, the cost of development will be increased but the flexibility of continuous mining will minimize the cycli¬cal nature of the production. The height of the mining section usually is deter¬mined by the strength of the wall rock and the amount of back bolting required. Once this has been decided, the appropriate drilling equipment can be chosen. The number and sizes of the rock passes employed depends upon the type and size of the extractive equipment and the type of backfill that is to be used. Since the miners must enter and leave the stope each shift, the level inter¬val is usually maintained at approximately 45 m (150 ft). Access from the level above into the stope must be main¬tained at all times. The employees perform all the work in the stope and adequate ventilation must be provided. Stope Planning Due to the flexibility of the method and the vari¬ability of the ore zones, layout is usually done on a stope basis. In areas where continuity is a problem, the size of the stope is usually determined by the boundary of the ore (with all of the ore within that boundary being removed). In areas of good continuity where ramps are to be used, the length of the stope may be determined by the length of time each of the cycles (preparation, back¬fill, mining, and ore extraction) requires. In the past, salt cavities for storage of liquid and gaseous fuels have been developed and operated using practical experience as a guide rather than rock mechanics principles and practices. Although many salt cavities are still operating satisfactorily. some of them are beginning to show various problems associated with long-term deterioration of the cavities. This paper describes a major breakthrough in the rock mechanics design of solution cavities which is the development and application of the REM computer simulation system. From the computer simulation analysis, the long-term deterioration process of cavities can be related to the basic parameters of rock mechanics design and the storage operations. The computer simulation system is also used for optimizing cavity design and operational specifications. This optimization technique is explained by its application to the three basic storage systems: 1) open dry storage system for liquids and solids 2) open wet storage system for liquids 3) pressurized storage system for gases, liquids and solids The effectiveness of the optimization technique is illustrated with some field examples by showing the direct interaction between the computer simulation system and field data of a test well including tectonic stress conditions, material property coefficients and geological anomalies.

Mining-induced coal dust causes various respiratory diseases to mine workers, such as coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP). Current available underground monitors are expensive, heavy and only measure mass concentration. These disadvantages limit them for regulatory sample monitoring purposes only while personal exposure levels for most miners remain unknown, risking miners to potential overexposures. Low-cost light scattering PM sensors offer a potential solution to this problem with capability of high spatio-temporal resolution PM characterization. However, these sensors require careful calibration before they can be applied in mining environments. There is basically no comprehensive study in the literature using a standard protocol assessing these sensors for coal dust monitoring. With the aim of calibrating the PMS5003 sensors for coal dust monitoring, we design the calibration method and system to calibrate these low-cost PM sensors coal dust monitoring. Working principles of present coal dust monitor and low-cost sensors are presented in detail. The linear regression calibration model which is used for the sensor calibration is further described. Sensor calibration and evaluation protocols are comprehensively compared and discussed. This investigation reveals the feasibility of low-cost sensors for real-time personal coal dust monitoring in underground coal mines.

Traditional or artisanal goldmining, also known as small scale goldmining, has a strong and probably a negative environmental impact. The processing methods applied are very frequently a source of severe pollution due to the emissions of mercury by the extraction of gold by means of amalgamation as well as the emissions of cyanide through cyanide leaching of gold bearing ores. The emissions find their way into the environment and contaminate soils, sediments, water and atmosphere. Abnormal concentrations of mercury and cyanides in waterways are known to occur year after year destroying irreplaceable regions of the world. Mercury and cyanide compounds are highly toxic and may directly create permanent damage to the whole ecosystem. Existing methods for recycling of mercury and for decontamination of mercury and cyanide contaminated tailings are not customary applied in small scale mining and are ineffective as well. Based on investigations of traditional and small size goldmining, this paper presents: -processing methods of gold and discarded tailings under consideration of environmental protection; -figures on actual situation; -recommendations for equipment; -some decontamination methods for mercury and residual cyanide. Mineral Processing methods in traditional gold mining Gold is usually existing in its ores as the metal alloyed with metallic silver and perhaps copper. The element may occur in the form of: -native gold -inclusions also of microns or submicroscopic size metal sulfides (auriferous) such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite, arsenopyrite and galena -combined as telluride or sulphotelluride. The separation process selected depends on whether the gold can be freed from its unfavorable associations (e.g. gangue) at a sufficiently coarse grain-size, or whether it is carried in a heavy sulfide which can be freed similarly. The usual practice is to concentrate the goldbearing mineral at a relatively coarse grain-size and to regrind the ore if necessary. The gold content is concentrated by secondary or tertiary gravital methods or is extracted by chemical methods (amalgamation, cyanidation etc.) Gold, even when of fine grain-size, settle readily due to its high specific gravity from pulps in which the main gangue mineral is quartz or silicates. Amalgamation is the process of separating gold and silver from their associated minerals by binding (entrapping) them into a mixture with mercury. The cyanide process is applied to separate gold or gold-bearing compounds by dissolution from the finely ground ore (CIP, CIL, RIP), or as heap leaching. The dissolved gold is separated from the solids and the metal-rich or pregnant solution is then treated to recover its gold. Gold is also recovered by flotation methods. This process is widely used in treating base metal ores and in separating various sulfide components of ores, as well as in removing the barren gangue. The gold usually associates with a specific product in a sequence of flotation operations and is recovered subsequently in the smelting of the sulfide concentrates and refining of the metallic products, or by cyanidation of the roasted concentrates. Froth-flotation can be applied to separate gold and sulfide minerals from a finely ground pulp. The Amalgamation Process Amalgamation is the main method for the recovery of gold in traditional mining and is applied for the extraction of gold from placers as well as primary ores. The mineral technology used depends on the nature of ore deposits. In winning gold from solid ore, the matrix of minerals and rocks must be crushed and ground to sufficient fineness to liberate the gold. The liberated gold could be treated similar as free gold from placers. Gold is mainly separated from the valueless gangue (barren rock) by utilizing the difference between the density of the impure native metal (density about 16-19) and the gangue (density about 2.5). In simple operations the material is carried by a stream of water down a sluice generally equipped with small transverse barriers (riffles) against which the gold collects. The riffled sluice is the principal device used by artisanal gold miners. Nowadays, spirals as well as centrifuges, such as Knelson separator or Falcon separator, are occasionally applied for gold recovery. Gold may also be recovered from the pulp, by passing it over corduroycovered tables that catch the heavier particles - a method maybe as ancient as gold mining itself. The four most important parameters controlling the flow of as in coal are the gas content, permeability, diffusion coefficient and clear characteristics. Estimates of these and, more importantly, a good knowledge about the variations in their values over time are important for proper simulation of long-term gas production. This paper describes experimental techniques for the estimation of diffusion-coefficient and permeability values, along with their time dependency under simulated in situ conditions. It is shown that the permeability and diffusion-coefficient values are not constant, as they are usually assumed to be. There is a significant variation in their values, probably as a result of changes in the microstructures of coal associated with release and flow of gas. Finally, a technique to estimate clear parameter is presented.

This paper is a summary of the author's industrial experiences on the selection and optimization of flotation reagent schemes for the recovery of gold species. The trends given are a composite of data and experiences gained on 24 different gold ores from around the globe. The primary emphasis is on the benefits of matching the associated gold mineralogy to a reagent scheme most appropriate for that mineralogy. Two general categories are discussed: the flotation of free or native gold species and the flotation of gold associated with a variety of sulfide minerals. Important plant operating factors influencing each of these two categories are presented with supporting examples. Carefully matching reagent chemistry and appropriate operating conditions to any given gold-bearing ore will not only lower the total reagent cost but, more importantly, can lead to measurable increases in gold recovery.

INTRODUCTION An evaluation of the radiological health risks from uranium mining and milling requires the determination of several key parameters. As shown in Figure 1, the first step is the estimation of the radioactive source term. The radionuclides in the ore consist of the 238U decay series nuclides shown in Figure 2, the 235U series nuclides, and 40K. The 238U decay series isotopes dominate the source term, with the 235U series isotopes causing less concern and 40K remaining at background levels. [ ] Specifically, the risks from uranium mining and milling are mainly associated with 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn, and its short-lived daughters. These radioisotopes are mainly alpha-particle emitters; hence, some dispersion mechanism is necessary to bring them into intimate contact with man so that they can be inhaled or ingested For water pathways, the leaching of the isotopes from [ ] the solid ore or tailings provides a measure of the amount of contaminant initially available to the environment. For the air pathway, dust-creation mechanisms such as blasting, crushing or general resuspension processes dominate for 226Ra and 230Th. However, 222Rn, being a chemically inert gas generated from the decay of 226Ra, can migrate through the ore, overburden and tailings over considerable distances. As shown in Figure 1, the next step in the pathway to man is environmental dilution and delay. For the water transport mechanism, the delay in the isotopes reaching an accessible water supply may be considerable (several thousand years or more), but for airborne nuclides the dispersion in the atmosphere is rapid and constitutes the main mitigating factor. Considerable ventilation is provided in underground mines to dilute and remove radon and its daughters in order to keep their concentrations low and thereby minimize their inhalation by miners. The rate of uptake by both the workers and the general public is often difficult to ascertain. It involves breathing rates, rates of water consumption and other poorly-defined parameters. The final steps are the risk estimators used to predict doses and cancer rates from the inhaled radon daughters and ingested or inhaled radium. Many

The inability to economically separate Fe3+(aq) from a variety of liquid effluents is a major Concern for the primary metals industry. A unique solvent extraction process, galvanic stripping, has been developed to address this problem. The galvanic stripping of iron from D2EHPA using only a 5~10 g/L H2SO4 solution is achieved after Fe3+ is directly reduced to Fee, in the organic phase using zinc metal additions. To date, the primary focus of the laboratory research has been on optimizing the parameters that control iron removal. The results from these studies have now been, used to make a preliminary design for a continuous flow process that is envisioned for zinc industrial applications. Specific quantitative data are shown for the use of a Zn-Ph cellos° in the iron-reams al process. Some introductory results on electrochemical potential measurements and impurity distribution with solution cycling are also giiven.

In most circumstances, the traditional methods of. ore reserve estimation for large undulating sedimentary deposits, such as coal and iron formations, do not allow the accurate prediction of grade for mining blocks. The problem is Particularly accute when the mining blocks are small with respect to the thickness of the geological zones in the deposit, and when there are significant grade changes between the foot-wall and hanging-wall of these zones. A simple geostatistical model has been developed, which takes into account the grade changes not only in the direction of the geological strata, but also in the direction normal to these strata. The genesis of sedimentary deposits and the resulting geological properties of these deposits were considered in the development of the model. The model has been successfully applied to the evaluation of a large coal deposit. Eventhough some practical difficulties have been encountered, for example when part of a geological zone was missing or had not been sampled, these difficulties have been .resolved. Both the theory and its practical application are presented in this paper.

Ball mill grinding circuits can be subject to upsets that arise from variable characteristics of the feed ore. These upsets are transients in critical circuit variables such as ball mill mass holdup, circulating load, sump level, cyclone efficiency and product particle size. They may occur frequently so that the operation is continuously fluctuating or they may be of such magnitude that some of the equipment is overloaded, resulting in shutdown, or an undesirable product particle size. The feed ore characteristics that influence ball mill circuit behavior in this manner include the grindability of the ore, the eventual transport characteristics of the ore in the mills and the feed ore size distribution. Control strategies for grinding circuits using conventional proportional-integral (PI) control have limitations to their effectiveness in controlling against feed ore disturbances. The first of these are the interactive nature of two or more control loops on a single circuit. Under some circumstances they begin to fight each other, increasing control error and settling time. PI control loop gain constants can be tuned to give best response for some set of conditions but once these change, as they would with a change in the feed ore, they are no longer the "best" ones (Shinsky, 1967). Due to these limitations, alternatives to conventional PI control strategies have been investigated for grinding as well as other mineral processing operations. These alternatives, all computer-based, include self tuning regulators, decoupling control and optimal control (Herbst and Bascur, 1983).

"INTRODUCTION In designing a new pneumatic Dust Sampling Device (DSD) for coal mines, it was essential to analyze the air and particle flow inside the device in detail using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. Several CFD models were developed to simulate the air and dust flow and sample collecting process of the DSD. These CFD models were developed to assist in the design of the DSD instrument prototypes for laboratory testing. Nozzle and injection parameters such as geometry, air velocity and pressure, were varied across a wide range to obtain the optimal settings to accurately simulate the fluid dynamics of the multi-phase flow within the DSD. Accordingly, these parameters were used as a guide for the design of the DSD and to verify the dust scouring dynamics, which is designed to represent the dust entrainment during an actual methane or coal dust explosion. BACKGROUND The 2010 explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine has demonstrated the destructive violence of a coal dust explosion. A major contributing factor for this disaster was that the mine operators did not have a reliable, direct-reading method to collect mine dust and determine inert content and combustibility. This led to the development of a new prototype handheld, pneumatic mine dust sampling device (DSD), which blows a puff of air and entrains the mine dust by mimicking the entrainment process during a mine explosion. A computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is used to analyze the air and dust flow inside the DSD. The objective of the CFD modeling effort is to find the optimum design of the DSD prototype, nozzle orientation, air pressure and pulse length by analyzing and varying these parameters so that the scouring action collects a valid, representative and repeatable mine dust sample. CFD MODEL DESIGN Figure 1 shows a wireframe image of the DSD which is utilized in the setup of the CFD model. The DSD has a triangular cross section and is 10 cm wide. Two nozzles with cross-sectional dimension of 2.8 cm by 0.25 cm act as inlets at the narrow end of the triangular cross section. The CFD model includes a reference plane 6 cm away from the nozzle to measure the quantity of dust collected. The geometry shown in Figure 1 was created for the model and it matches with the design of the actual device shown in the figure 2. Symmetry, along the plane X-Y through the center of the device, is used to reduce the number of computational cells in the CFD model. Figure 2 shows the prototype device used for experimental testing. CFD MODEL SETUP Figure 3 shows a hexahedral mesh with a cell size of 0.8 mm and the total number of cells is around 650,000. The ANSYS Fluent® pressure based solver with a transient case was used with a total duration of 40 ms. The 40 ms simulation time is based on experimental measurements to capture the injection of air and initial scouring of dust."

The deep South African gold mines rely on refrigeration to provide a safe working environment. Chilled water, which is produced in large central refrigeration plants, is distributed throughout mines In insulated pipes. In view of the high cost of the insulation materials and recent regulations which prohibit the use of certain insulation materials, a careful examination of the actual benefits of insulating chilled water pipes was undertaken. The objective of the investigation was to produce general guidelines regarding the use of insulation, but the results of numerous studies have shown that the use of insulation is extremely site specific and thus no general guidelines can be given. To assist ventilation engineers with studies on insulation requirements for their cooling systems a computer program has been developed. This paper describes the personal computer program which contains the same user friendly interface as developed for other COMRO programs. Is fully menu driven and incorporates a comprehensive HELP facility which provides background information and assistance with the selection of input data. The effects on the ventilation air and chilled water temperatures from not insulating chilled water pipes in certain areas are calculated. Air leakage, heat flow from the surrounding rock to the ventilation air and heat flow from the ventilation air to the water flowing in chilled water pipes are taken into account. A simple cooling system is considered in which cold water is distributed over a distance of 1 000 m through pipes to a single air cooler. The influences of changes in the temperature of the chilled water and ventilation air, as well as air leakage on the insulation requirements are determined.

"INTRODUCTION Productivity in Open Pit mines depend on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in Open Pit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad-hoc methodology for analyzing the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are sub-par with the expected production standards. STUDY OBJECTIVES The purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle or the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with pre-defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and determine corrective actions: • Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process; • Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste, and how they help to identify equipment performance; • Develop software interfaces to visualize the Alert System in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor; and • Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an Open Pit mine. PROBLEM STATEMENT Transporting material in Open Pit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity and subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded, and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization. For the identification of delays, a context-based system could be required in order to help optimizing the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage, and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

As the techniques and resolution for three-dimensional spatial analysis have advanced in the last decade, it is now possible to map in detail the microstructure of multiphase materials in three-dimensional digital space. In this regard, three-dimensional X-ray microtomography offers a unique imaging capability. Spatial resolution on the order of 10 µm can be achieved with the use of microfocus X-ray generators. Recently, a state-of-the-art cone beam X-ray microtomography system was installed at the University of Utah for the quantitative analysis of multiphase materials in three dimensions. This facility was designed to obtain 2,048 by 2,048-pixel reconstruction over a 10-mm diameter, while also allowing for the imaging of somewhat larger (40-mm) objects. The system is capable of handling high-density materials, even materials having a density as high as 8.0 g/cm3. This unique, one-of-a-kind instrument can be used to obtain three-dimensional spatial reconstruction for many applications, such as three-dimensional liberation analysis, pore structure analysis of particle beds during filtration and the air-void system of concrete structures. The utilization of X-ray microtomography not only allows for the quantitative analysis of multiphase systems but also allows, for the textural characterization and determination of phase continuity. This paper presents information regarding the current use of this new facility and a review of potential applications for the advanced analytical system.
