In underground mining operations, ventilation and water sprays are the common methods of controlling dust. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of technical literature dealing with water sprays for dust control. However, guidelines for the design of an effective water spray system have not been presented to the mining industry. This paper recommends guidelines for water spray systems to control dust in underground mining operations. These guidelines suggest type, number, location, and orientation of nozzles; desirable operating water pressure; and associated filtration system.

INTRODUCTION During a recent panel discussion on the topic of millwater antiscalants, the question was posed: "What would you like to see in the future?" Answer: 'We need an antiscalant that: can be fed without a pump (no maintenance), functions on residual basis (no fault), can be tested for colorimetrically in sub-part-per- mi 11 ion concentrations (no guessing) and will recycle back to the mill from tailings (no cost).” Impossible? Based upon today's level of technology, such a product does not exist. However, a few of the qualifications listed above are certainly food for future thought. Meanwhile, progress is being made in upgrading three essential elements in this critical area of ore processing. They are: 1. Antiscalant reagent research and development. 2. On-line monitoring programs. 3. Reagent storage and feed systems. The objective of this paper is to out- line the current direction being taken in each of these areas and to present case histories as examples of how theory has been applied in field situations to better improve operations. LABORATORY SCREENING TESTS Recent technical papers have explained the various generic chemical raw materials which are available in the marketplace. While the merits of each chemical component are open to debate, the processes used by most major reagent suppliers to evaluate products in the laboratory are fairly standard. Common techniques incorporate both static and dynamic conditions in the search for the most cost effective product. Static Test Perhaps the most common test procedure used is based upon NACE Standard Test Method 03-74, which is "a laboratory screening test to determine the ability of scale inhibitors to prevent precipitation of calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate from solution." The objective of this test is to measure the change in calcium ion concentration in a container of saturated stock solution prepared from calcium chloride and sodium carbonate which is heated in a water bath. After 12 hours at constant temperature (160°), the mother liquor is pipetted into a beaker and a titrated for gm/l of unprecipitated calcium ion. A simultaneous test is performed on stock solution with antiscalant added. The results are then charted to determine the most effective antiscalant (with respect to preventing precipitation of calcite). It should be noted that this procedure examines only the ability of a chemical additive to retain calcite in a saturated solution where thermal stress is applied. This is commonly referred to as sequestration or stabilization. It has been documented that products which act in this manner (i.e., inorganic and organic phosphates) are good scale inhibitors. However, low molecular weight anionic polymers function in a much different manner by distorting calcite crystal size, shape and charge density, thus preventing scale formation. Because of this different mode of operation, static tests may not prove conclusive where polymers and sequestrants are being compared. The simplicity of this test makes it easily adaptable for field use, although modifications are often made.

Work that has culminated in the manufacture and testing of a old-selective resin on a pilot-plant scale is dcscribed. Following a brief discussion about the nature of commercially available resins which identifies them as poor candidates for a gold extraction application, the improved properties of the new type of resin are illustrated using results from comparative loading tests. Further results from continuous countercurrent extractions using synthetic leach liquors and elution work using thiourea as the eluant demonstrate the superiority of the new resin over commercial resins and hence, its potential for use in a resin-in-pulp process for gold.

International lending institutions have charters requiring projects that are seeking loans to adhere to certain environmental performance standards, including compliance with host-country environmental laws, as well as observance of international environmental policies and guidelines. The most commonly applied international environmental policies and guidelines are those established by The World Bank. Lenders require a review by an independent engineer to determine that the feasibility study plans have been developed in accordance with the applicable environmental commitments. Lender agreements require independent engineer evaluation of environmental performance through the construction phase and initial operations phase of the project, culminating in the issuance of an "Environ- mental Completion Certificate."

In the mid-1950s the importation of foreign oil began to encroach on traditional coal markets such as railroad steam engine fuel, home heating, electrical generating plants, and others. Many of the smaller coal companies with substantial coal reserves subsequently found that they could no longer continue to mine economically and merged in various ways with larger established coal mining concerns. As the seats of top management and authority were removed from the mines to large metro centers such as New York, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, the more personal relationship between mine workers and management that had existed prior to these mergers began to be eroded and replaced by " remote control " mine management. The disappearance of this face-to-face contact of upper management with mine employees tended to create barriers blocking simple effective communications between coal mine management and labor. In examining the human relations aspects of the coal mining industry, many elements, some concerned with work and others not, have depicted the industry as almost devoid of good applied human relations and communications practices, and, in truth, little has been done to alleviate this situation. In past years many coal producing companies, with the exception of one of the largest, failed to adequately define the term "communications" as it applied to their companies, whether internally or externally. Internally many still place heavy reliance on written communications such as company-wide newspapers to do the job of communicating with their employees which they feel ought to be done. One company puts an inordinate belief in its company "newspaper" as the primary instrument to stimulate its work force into increasing productivity. Primarily aimed at the workers, who greatly outnumber the salaried administrative people, this publication mainly documents the fortunes of individual mine workers who are felt to have achieved something with their lives, e.g., a mine worker who had managed to put four children through universities, the philosophy behind this being to inspire other workers to achieve worth- while goals.

The Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project broke ground in August 2021, constructing the tallest Asphalt Core Dam in North America, intending to improve reliability of drinking water supply to Northern Colorado communities. Aiming to expedite and streamline the geological mapping process in the tunnel, Stantec’s teams have developed a mobile and web-based GIS application for digital mapping input and rock mass evaluation, allowing real time decision making for assigning tunnel support class and resulting in a faster more efficient process. The following article presents and demonstrates the GIS mobile and web application-based process, the mapping results and review additional uses of the database created.

It can systematically assess if the control and management systems designed for protection of sensitive ecosystems are adequate. The results of the assessment can help to identify key elements in the project that pose higher risks due to uncertainties in design. These assessments can then be used to make recommendations to further manage and reduce risks as the project is developed. QUALITATIVE RISK ASSESSMENT The general principles of a risk assessment are well summarized by Kaplan and Garrick (1981): "In analyzing risk we are attempting to envision how the future will turn out if we undertake a certain course of action (or inaction)." Fundamentally, therefore a risk analysis consists of an answer to the following three questions: What can happen? (i.e. what can go wrong?) How likely is it that that will happen? If it does happen what are the consequences?" Risk assessments can be performed using various levels of sophistication depending on the amount and accuracy of data available. A qualitative risk assessment uses descriptors throughout to express the level of risk. The definitions of the descriptors are presented in terms of the magnitude or concentration of contaminants. The results of a qualitative risk assessment can be used to: a)Document the evaluation and decisionmaking process. Although differences of opinion may exist about the definitions of the descriptors, the process is well-documented; b)Express the relative risk associated with specific activities or design elements; and, c)Select those failure modes or release mechanisms that may result in significant risks. These mechanisms can then be further developed in quantitative risk assessments. A qualitative risk assessment can be performed in a systematic approach using four steps (Van Zyl, 1987): A qualitative environmental risk assessment can be used to describe the risks associated with the development of a new mine and to make an evaluation of the adequacy of its design for environmental protection. The relative magnitude of risk associated with selected failure modes and exposure/consequence scenario assessments is the final result of a qualitative risk assessment. These failure modes are based on site specific areas and components, and mining and construction phases. The four steps of a risk assessment (hazard assessment, exposure assessment, consequence assessment, and risk characterization) are used in the development of a qualitative risk assessment. Relative magnitudes (using a five point scale of negligible to high) for each step, can be quantified in a qualitative risk assessment. Development of the descriptors for the relative magnitudes in each step is a very important part of a qualitative risk assessment. The success of a qualitative risk assessment depends on the adequacy of the information base and the subjective judgements made in each step. The quality of the risk assessment is, therefore, dependent on the experience of the assessors. A mining project in a sensitive coastal environment is presented as an example to demonstrate the application of a qualitative risk assessment. INTRODUCTION Environmental impacts from mining operations have been a significant factor in the last century. This was especially the case prior to the development of a better understanding of environmental processes and the potential impacts of acid rock drainage (ARD), and associated heavy metals, or the uncontrolled disposal of tailings and waste rock (Smith, 1987). Much care has been exercised over the last two decades in designing and operating mines to limit the environmental impacts as far as possible. All new mines are specifically designed with mitigative methods to manage such potential environmental impacts. Attention is directed to ARD impacts, safe disposal of mine waste rock and tailings, transportation and storage of chemicals and fuels, and final reclamation. A qualitative risk assessment can be used to address all project systems and activities that may potentially pose a risk to the environment.

Bacteria have long been used for the extraction of copper during dump leaching of sulfide minerals and in the recovery of uranium from mined-out areas. However, bacteria can also be used in extraction of trace metals from copper ores and waste materials. Molybdenum, tungsten, nickel, cobalt, gold, silver, and other strategic metals can potentially be released from ores and wastes by biological processes. The chemistry and biology of these reactions, the potential for using the processes, and the state-of-the-art of the technology will be discussed.

For the last few years, the grinding model first proposed by Andrews and Mika (1975) has regained attention from the scientific community. Though sophisticated identification algorithms have been developed, the number of its parameters that have to be estimated remains huge. Most of these constants (often more than 90%) are for the breakage function. This paper describes a new method for reducing efficiently the number of the breakage function parameters of the Andrews-Mika grinding model. It makes use of second-order statistics and of a stereostochastic model for liberation (for instance, BooKing).

1.1. INTRODUCTION Despite indications of a general economic recovery in the U.S. during the mid-19801s, mine operators have not generally shared in the benefits of these reported better times. Budgets have not rebounded, borrowing is tougher, parent companies' pockets are not as deep as in previous years, and margins are not any better -- if there is any left over at all. Managing capital equipment budgets is always a challenge, and the last five years of stretched equipment lives make these decisions more tenuous. Delays and avoidance of replacements due to tough times inevitably makes those decisions increasingly difficult and usually more expensive The purposes of this paper are to present. a brief refresher outline of the fundamentals of equipment replacement analysis, to suggest a number of papers where analysis methods are explained in greater detail. and to recommend the use of a widespread microcomputer software capability (1-2-3) as the easiest path to a much-needed solution for a very difficult, and usually under-supported management decision problem 2. REPLACEMENT DECISION POLICY Investments in equipment replacements must compete for capital with all other investment alternatives. Capital for replacements of ten represents a greater commitment than do the new projects which a company might handle in a given year. But. sadly, formal policies for standardized analysis of replacements rarely exist, even in major companies. Yet this policy can be very significant in determining the competitiveness of a firm. Whereas many replacement decisions are based on cost minimization, economists and financial analysts agree that wealth maximization or return on investment is the superior criterion. Though the difference may seem slight, agreement on a firm's financial objective is vital. Replacement policy should be straight- forward. have a logical basis, and a proper level of sophistication. There are several reasons to develop a policy for replacement decision-making: [I] 1 - equipment's optimal economic life is nearly always shorter than its physical life; 2 - mine life often exceeds equipment life, so management must face these decisions routinly 3 - replacement capital costs, on an undiscounted basis, can run 25 to 75% of original capital 4 - technological changes may result in a newer machine or system which can operate more efficiently, more safely. or less expensively 5 - estimates should be made consistently in the fundamental areas of life expectancy, availability, utilization. price escalation, taxes 6 - long-term and short-term budgeting without decent data and analytical capability is nearly impossible, or at least ineffective Policy development assumptions which must be considered include: the planning horizon, cost patterns, interest rates, availability of capital, replacement vs. expansion, technology advances.

The increasing volume of wastes being generated by industry is a legacy of the industrial revolution and subsequent industrial growth. Social and regulatory pressures have been mounting on industry to improve its waste management practices. In many industrial sectors, waste disposal has been the only method of waste management. Land farming, underground burial, deep wells and incineration are still practiced. Often, concentration and volume reduction of waste streams are also practiced to reduce the waste management costs. In the recent years, there has been emphasis on waste minimization. Since the 19th century, industry has practiced recycling of usable resources as a way of handling unwanted byproducts. The mining industry has recovered or extracted economic minerals from tailings for decades. For example, during the gold rush period of 1970s, extraction of gold from tailings dams became economically attractive. Similarly, when it was economical, coal and shale fractions have also been recovered from tailings and refuge materials for commercial uses. In the steel industry, with the development of new furnace technology, recycling of flue dust and scrap iron was practiced as early as in the 19th century. Before 1900, there was little incentive for the industry to reduce the waste volumes. Manufacturers, however, did see a rationale for adopting profit-increasing techniques. They made an effort to recover and recycle economic materials from waste sources. One of the pioneering examples of resource recovery is the coke making industry. As the industry was market driven, products recycled from coke batteries included ammonia for use in fertilizers, gas for power generation and heating, and tar for road construction, wood preservation and roofing. Tar had been avery troublesome waste byproduct. But it quickly became a valuable chemical raw material, providing the foundation for Germany's dominance of the world's dye and medicine markets before World War I. Similar trends evolved in the chemical industry. In the context of current environmental regulations and escalating mining and processing costs, recycling of re- [ ] sources is becoming economically more attractive. Solid and liquid wastes generated by industries contain a range of inorganic and organic contaminants. Among these contaminants, metals and hydrocarbons form major groups. Treatment of these wastes is essential to meet regulatory disposal requirements. In the recent years, based on the principles of chemical and mineral process engineering, processes have been developed to treat these industrial wastes. This article reviews some of the processes that have made impacts and have proven to be effective at commercial scales.

INTRODUCTION Boom-type miners mechanize the cutting and loading of a solid face of rock having a compressive strength as high as 124 MPa (18,000 psi). These machines differ from continuous miners in that they can cut much harder rock for any given cutter-motor power. In addi¬tion, a boom miner is more flexible, selectively cutting any cross-sectional configuration from circular to square arched faces, 1.57-rad (90°) turns, and mixed faces. The basic operational concept of these machines, utilizing a rotary cutterhead mounted on a slewing boom, gained importance in Europe during the 1960s, where, due to their specialized use in roadway development in coal mines, they were called roadheaders. Along with continuous miners, boom miners share the ability to fully mechanize the cutting and loading of rock, while eliminating the need for explosives and the shattering and overbreaking of roof and rib rock that is normal with conventional mining methods. The machines are crawler-mounted and most have a gathering-arm load¬ing system that, moves the cut rock onto an internal chain conveyor, subsequently discharging the rock into a transport device such as a shuttle car or a bridge conveyor. Light- to medium-weight boom miners are cutting softer rocks and minerals successfully, including coal, shale, rock salt, potash, phosphate, weak sandstones (e.g., those associated with uranium ore), and other softer ores such as iron. Heavy third-generation ma¬chines have extended rock cutting to much harder ores such as borate, oil shale, and almost all rock associated with coal seams, except for the harder sandstones and limestones. The mention herein of specific manufacturers, brand names, or models is made by way of example only and does not constitute endorsement by the author or The Pennsylvania State University. All costs cited herein are in 1977 US dollars. TYPES OF BOOM MINERS All boom miners utilize drag bits fixed on a rotary cutterhead that is powered by an electric motor mounted in the slewing and elevating cutter boom. The cutter¬head is either a ripping or a milling type, and the machines have evolved through three generations (Boldt, 1977). As shown in Fig. 1, only one boom miner cur¬rently produced can use both ripping and milling cutter¬heads on one machine. Table 1 lists boom-miner models built in large num¬bers and/or successfully used or marketed in North America. Table I excludes machines of which only a few have been produced and none sold in North America, such as those manufactured by Demag, Eick¬hoff, Paurat, and Thyssen-Rheinstahl. The only Ameri¬can boom miners are the F-16 and Super ROC¬MINER"', manufactured by AEC, Inc., State College, PA. Machine Generations Three generations of boom miners can be distin¬guished according to their times of introduction, their rock-cutting abilities, and their weight classifications. Fig. 2 illustrates typical best-practice production rates possible from boom miners for selected cutter-motor power sizes (other power figures can be interpolated). The addition of organic and inorganic dispersants to aqueous suspensions of heterogeneous particles (kaolin) was found to significantly affect the solubility of metal ions from kaolin particles and stability of the dispersion. In most of the industrial applications of kaolin, highly concentrated slurries of controlled stability and fluidity are required. The solubility of kaolin particles in terms of aluminum and silicon ions and its effect on the stability of the slurry was investigated. The main objectives of this study were (1) to study the effect of the extracted metals on the properties and performance of the slurry, (2) to understand the reaction mechanism of dissolution of metals from kaolin, and (3) to understand the interaction mechanism of dispersants with kaolin particles. The controlling variables were dispersant dosage, slurry pH, solids loading, and aging.

INTRODUCTION The support of openings in weak sandstones can be achieved by spraying on a liquid grout which will soak in and harden to form a shell. In the St. Peter sandstone of the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota compressive strength is increased from about 0.7 MPa (100 psi) to over 7 MPa (1000 psi) to depths of 152 mm (6 in.). A shell of this strength and thickness can pro¬vide support much as shotcrete does but at lower cost. If the spray-grouted shell is inadequate for the support needed, it provides a good base for shotcrete application, which is often difficult in weak or friable sand¬stones because the fresh shotcrete peels off along with a thin layer of sandstone. The spray-grouted technique was initially developed at the Civil and Mineral Engineering Dept. of the University of Minnesota using funds provided by RANN Div. of the National Science Foundation. It was used as temporary support in a 3-m (10-ft) wide, 3700-m (12,000-ft) long storm water drain tunnel by the Minneapolis Sewer Construction Dept. Much of the field development at this construction project was carried out with the cooperation of the personnel of the city of Minneapolis. It also was used for temporary support in a 3.3-m (11-ft) wide, 1800-m (6000-ft) long storm water tunnel built in 1978-1980 for the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation in Minneapolis. In 1975, 2000 m (6500 ft) of 1.5-m (5-ft) wide utility tunnels were spray-grouted for final lining. A 50-m (150-ft) long, 1.2-m (4-ft) wide test tunnel built at the university in 1974 was sprayed for half its length and is being observed for long-term behavior which to date (1981) is good. GROUT MATERIALS The requirements for the liquid grout are more severe than those for injection grouting. Besides being able to penetrate the rock and develop sufficient strength, it must have the following properties: (1) be nontoxic, noncombustible, and have a low odor for spraying under¬ground; (2) have controllable viscosity and setting time for adjusting to the permeability of the sandstone and the required depth of penetration; and (3) must "wet" the sandstone and develop capillary "draw" to penetrate to the required depth. A sodium silicate-based grout with the proper setting agent meets these requirements in the local St. Peter sandstone which has a uniform grain size dis¬tribution curve with D,,, = 0.1 mm, permeability of about 10 to 20 darcys, a porosity of about 25%, and less than 5% of silt size or smaller. It is 97 to 99% pure SiO2. The grout mix consists of Philadelphia Quartz Co. Type N sodium silicate and Celtite 55 Terraset Spray Grade (SG) distributed by Celtite Inc., Cleveland, OH. A volume mix ratio of 100:9:125 for sodium silicate to setting agent to water produces a grout with two to four centipoise viscosity, and initial set at 20°C of 20 min. Setting time is temperature dependent, being longer at lower temperatures, but can be adjusted by varying the setting agent concentration a few percentage points. APPLICATION The application is simple. Spray the grout on the surface until the desired penetration is achieved. Penetration rates of about 5 mm (0.2 in.) per min. are realized in the St. Peter sandstone for up to 152 mm (6 in.) of penetration (30 min. of spraying). The set time must be longer than the spraying time. The spray nozzle should be moved back and forth at a rate that minimizes runoff due to surface buildup. Both a single large hand-propelled nozzle and multiple small machine propelled nozzles have been used successfully. The pumping and mixing equipment used consisted of: (1) a hand-held, hand-pumped, 11-L (3-gal) gar¬den sprayer for test patches (mix by shaking); (2) 76-L (20 gal) batch mixing in barrels with small electric pumps for spraying and mixing; (3) two component pumps consisting of Hypro Model 5300 piston pumps (Hypro Pump Co., St. Paul, MN) on a common shaft driven by an electric motor. The sodium silicate is premixed with a portion of the water and the setting agent is mixed with the rest of the water. The two components are combined and mixed just before the nozzle; and (4) a proportioner metering the setting agent just before the nozzle with the water and sodium silicate premixed and pumped from the surface. The proportioner permits the bulk of the grout to be pumped through a single pipe or hose with only the setting agent stored underground. This is efficient and low in cost. COST The grout mix costs about $0.20/L ($0.75 per gal) in 1978 dollars. Filling all the voids 100 mm (4 in.) deep (25% initial porosity) would have a materials cost of about $5.40/m2 ($0.50 per sq ft). The labor cost of application is usually less than the material cost for normal tunnel jobs. A pump and proportioner cost less than $1000. Sodium silicate storage tanks and pip¬ing costs would depend on the particular site conditions. REFERENCES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY Nelson, C. INTRODUCTION Today, auxiliary fans, or boosters as they are sometimes called, are commonly used underground to provide ventilation for safe working conditions for personnel. Fans are installed in many ways and for many purposes; however, their use falls into three main categories depending upon the application. Auxiliary Face Ventilation For Coal Mines Usually the application of auxiliary fans underground in coal mines presents problems not normally encountered in other types of mining. Two of the major problems deal with liberation of methane at the coal face and the production of coal dust in the mining process. For these conditions it is necessary to use permissible (explosion-proof) type of equipment. As a result, these fans are discussed in a category by themselves. Auxiliary Fans For Tunnel and Drift Ventilation Tunnels and drifts present unique ventilation requirements. For instance, tunnels and drifts can be developed for considerable distances into virgin territory. Since they are generally dead-ended, the only way to obtain ventilation at the face is to use ventilation pipe to establish one leg of a ventilation circuit. The ventilation of tunnels and drifts therefore falls into another natural category. Other Uses of Auxiliary Fans For Mining Purposes Fans can be applied to mining applications in many ways other than those discussed under the other two categories. For example, many times auxiliary fans can do a much more practical job of proper air control and distribution that can be achieved with any other mechanical means; therefore, these other uses are discussed as a special category. AUXILIARY FACE VENTILATION FOR COAL MINES After 1936, federal and state coal mining laws prohibited the use of auxiliary underground fans in coal mines since such equipment had been widely misused. In certain cases, recirculation of face air had been allowed to occur thereby creating a serious potential explosive hazard by the possible buildup of excessive methane concentrations. By the late 1950s, mining machines with rapid face penetration were commonly being used in coal seams which liberated higher quantities of methane than in earlier years. As a consequence, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the use of auxiliary face fans was again allowed under strict experimental conditions because conventional methods of face ventilation control without fans were becoming inadequate. Today, auxiliary face fans are widely used under strict federal and state control. Such auxiliary ventilation does not reduce the need for the amount of primary air from the main mine fans; however, it does help to distribute primary air more efficiently at the face. The present trend is toward an exhaust system of ventilation utilizing 406- to 610-mm (16- to 24-in.) diam tubing extending from the face to an outby auxiliary fan. Since the tubing is normally applied with negative pressure, spiral wire reinforced tubing has been replaced largely with metal and, more commonly, fiberglass tub¬ing. Additional auxiliary blower units are often used at the mouth of the room being developed, or installed on the miner or loader near the face, depending upon the amount of gas liberation present. Often one (or more) of the fan units is equipped with an integrally mounted hopper and feeder which automatically adds a continuously metered amount of rock dust to the exhaust air. The combination unit tends to make the mixture of discharge particles noncombustible and reduces to some extent the need for additional rock dusting of return airways. In this part of the chapter, typical auxiliary ventilation systems are described including curves and photograph of typical/applicable equipment. Reference will be made to "blowers" and "ex¬hausters." Both are fans and are basically the same units. They take on their name through the manner in which they are used. A blower usually has an inlet bell on the inlet side to help to obtain good air flow into the blades. An exhauster often has a discharge cone added to reduce the discharge loss. Any basic fan unit can be used either as a blower or an exhauster. Description of Auxiliary Ventilation Systems Several auxiliary ventilation systems and modifications of basic systems have evolved over recent years. Best known for its extensive bauxite and alumina exports, Jamaica also has a small but active industrial minerals sector. The island has for many years been a net exporter of small tonnages of gypsum, metallurgical-grade limestone and marble products. As bauxite and alumina earnings have declined the government of Jamaica has made extra efforts to promote growth of overseas sales of these nonmetallics. The nearby U.S. market is a natural first choice for new exports. Overview In 1984, Jamaica quarried an estimated 3.2 million cu m of marble and fill and an additional 3.5 million cu m of sand and gravel, for use in domestic construction. These amounts are in line with the production in earlier years of the 1980s but are not a factor in the export pattern and need not be considered further. Similarly, annual production of 15 million ton of silica sand for the manufacture of glass bottles is principally consumed by the domestic market.

It concludes that for computing to be effective it must fit in with the bay in which the company operates and must be sensitive to the needs of the people it serves.

Although there have been great advances regarding the understanding of mine fires in underground mines in the last century, fires remain high risk incidents. During fire scenarios, many crucial decisions and actions can be made that greatly influence the outcomes of these scenarios. Underground worker decisions are mainly based on training and experience, which in some cases can be complemented with previous analysis of fire effects. In order to review the guidelines that should be taken into account for this kind of examination, a numerical analysis of effects produced by a shuttle car fire under five different ventilation conditions was carried out. The analysis provides some insightful recommendations for firefighting personnel such as time for direct attack and best attack position for first responders and fire brigade groups. Also, the most critical parameters for each scenario were determined. Finally, all results were systematically organized and a first approximation of a fire classification based on the tenability limits was provided for first responder and fire brigade groups. The methodology used in this study for the fire classification could allow for the most appropriate decisions by firefighting personnel increasing the probability to put fires out without compromising their health and safety. INTRODUCTION While there have been great advances regarding the causes of mine fires in underground mines in the last century “small fires have occurred and always will occur in underground mines” (Conti, Chasko, Wiehagen, & Lazzara, 2005). The response time and decisions made during an underground mine fire are critical elements that have direct influence on the event outcome. Mine fires can grow in size quickly causing catastrophic consequences, thus rapid and suitable response actions can result in the difference between an minor emergency situation and a disaster. Upon the confirmation of a fire, a decision must be made regarding whether to fight the fire or evacuate the mine. Even though all underground coal mines possess emergency response plans and firefighting personnel are highly trained, decisions can be complemented with previous numerical analyses. Such analyses could contribute with the knowledge of potential fire effects and consequently with fire preparedness in the mine. Preparedness in underground mines is an important element to reduce the probability of the negative consequences of a mine fire. The time elapsed between the detection of the fire and response in the early stage is a serious component since small fires can produce larger and more serious consequences. If a mine fire cannot be put out within the short time after discovery, the chance of getting the system back in balanced or the success of safely controlling and extinguishing a mine fire is reduced (Conti et al., 2005, Conti, Chasko, Wiehagen, & Lazzara, 2000, Trevits, Yuan, Teacoach, Valoski, & Urosek, 2009, Brake, 2013). As confirmed by Conti and others, if a mine fire cannot be controlled by direct firefighting methods the probability of extinguishing the fire, without sealing is greatly reduced (Conti et al., 2005). However, response actions such as direct extinguishment must be carried out without compromising the health and safety of the firefighting personnel (Kim, Lönnermark, & Ingason, 2010).
