The overall economics of a coal production unit are governed by a number of interdependent parameters which individually and collectively affect the final result. A business judgement is measured through return on investment considerations and in this respect, a sensitivity analysis proves useful. Figures 1 and 2 show how the various parameters affect return on investment through unfavourable change from planned or expected values. In the case of metallurgical coals, the selling price negotiated is the primary and most sensitive variable, followed by transportation, clean coal yield and capital funds invested in mining. It is clear that coal preparation plant capital and operating costs are the least sensitive to R.O.I. For energy coals, the selling price is determined by heat energy content (x cents per million BTU's) and is therefore not con¬sidered as an interdependent variable. In this case, transportation cost is the major primary factor affecting the level of income. Again the amount of saleable clean coal or total yield has a major effect on return on investment. Most of the factors considered in Figures 1 and 2 are fixed and unfavorable change from planned values becomes critical but clean coal yield is to a great extent controllable during actual operations. Once the theoretical yield for a particular coal has been determined, the optimum return is achieved by approaching this theoretical yield as nearly as possible in practical commercial operation.

Using computer applications to solve mining problems began in the early 1960s, utilizing the large (for that day) centralized computing facilities at a few universities and major mining company headquarters. Many years passed before technology was adequate to allow any of those applications to be run at the mine sites to provide immediately available solutions. One of the first mining applications attempted was for ore reserve analysis and long- to medium-range mine planning. As these are among the most frequent and familiar minicomputer applications at the mine site, it is interesting to follow the evolution of computing and communications hardware which has finally allowed effective transfer of this technology.

The Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project Site (Site) is a former uranium-ore processing facility near Moab, Utah, where production ended in 1984. The United States Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) is responsible for remediating the site to meet 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 192 standards promulgated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency under the authority of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Tailings from the former mill were stored in an unlined impoundment (tailings pile), totaling 16 million tons of waste material. Surface cleanup has been ongoing since 2009 and consists of removal and transport of tailings via rail to an off-site disposal facility in Crescent Junction, Utah, with an estimated completion date around 2029. Gravity-driven migration of tailings fluids and recharge through the tailings pile and former on-site ore storage areas in the northeastern part of the site led to contamination of site soil and groundwater. The primary contaminant of concern is ammonia, which was present in fluids used in the milling process (DOE 2003). Uranium is a contaminant of potential concern. An interim groundwater remedy is currently in place that utilizes a system of extraction and injection wells to limit discharge of contaminated groundwater into the nearby Colorado River. Exceedance of surface water standards for ammonia are a principal concern due to potential endangered species fish habitat areas along the Colorado River adjacent to the Site. When necessary, surface water diversion is used to lower surface water ammonia concentrations when suitable habitats develop for endangered young-of-year fish. Once surface cleanup concludes and the tailings pile is removed, a formal groundwater remedy must be selected and documented in a Groundwater Compliance Action Plan (GCAP). Under Title 1 of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act, natural flushing (i.e., monitored natural attenuation), may be selected as the groundwater remedy if it can be demonstrated that the remedy will achieve groundwater standards within 100 years. The 40 CFR 192 groundwater standard for uranium is 44 micrograms per liter (μg/L), and the target groundwater concentration of ammonia based on adverse effects on local fish species is 3 milligrams per liter (mg/L). A collaboration with Geosyntec Consultants, Inc. (Geosyntec), the Moab UMTRA Project team, the DOE Office of Legacy Management, the DOE-EM, and the Network of National Laboratories for Environmental Management and Stewardship was held in 2022 with the goal to generate actionable recommendations to develop a GCAP for the Site. The primary recommendation was development of a groundwater fate and transport model to predict the remedial timeframe under various groundwater remedies. This paper presents the results of soil and groundwater sampling, geochemical modelling, and laboratory column and batch reactor testing that will be used to parameterize a numerical model for estimating the remedial timeframe under various scenarios, including natural flushing.

Two recently published papers describing the use of psychological tests for selection and placement of coal mine personnel have created considerable interest within the Coal Industry, one paper, published in the April 1957 "Mining Congress Journal," entitled "Personnel Evaluation and Training," discusses the use of tests by the Christopher Coal Company, The second paper, published in the "West -Virginia Coal Mining Institute's 1957 Report" and in the September 1957 "Coal Age," entitled "Testing to Select Better Personnel for Coal Mining Today," outlines Hanna Coal Company's test and selection procedures. Since these rather detailed sources are readily available, and to avoid repetition of the material in them, we will confine this paper to a very brief review of the essential steps already taken by these companies and a more extensive look at newer material. Briefly, the Personnel Managers, Mr. Harold L, Durrett and Mr. Albert M,. Rowe, of the Hanna Coal Company and Christopher Coal Company, in conjunction with Dr. Quin F, Curtis, Head of the Psychology Department of West Virginia University, developed two different groups oftests for coal mine personnel, The first group oftests was designed to assist in the selection of supervisors. These tests of the supervisory group were "The California Short Form Test of Mental Maturity - Advanced Series," which gave an I.Q. rating, and the second test is known as "The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory," which measures several personality characteristics, These tests must be given, grade, and interpreted by a person trained in psychological testing. As a result of testing all of Christopher's supervisory employees (seventy in number) by this method, and then comparing the individual results with the individual ratings of the foremen on the job, a so-called foremen's scale was developed. If this resulting foremen's scale had been used to select the foremen who were rated as, the best men in on-the-job performance, it would have correctly identified seventy-four percent of that group.

New, larger cutters requiring higher operating loads and thus increased cutterhead thrust, higher cut¬terhead speeds and more pronounced demands of maintaining high penetration rates also in mixed ground, constantly augment the loads on TBM main bearings. At the same time, the demand of a single TBM model covering a wide diameter range limits the available space for the main bearing at the smaller end. Innovative concepts and advanced methods of calculating bearing loads and lifetimes are needed to meet the demands which TBM suppliers and their customers face. This paper reviews different design approaches and covers the influence of lubrication on bearing life and condition monitoring as well.

Mixing of solid-liquid slurries is a unit operation that is widely encountered in the minerals processing industry. Applications may range from simple slurry storage in open tanks to complex chemical reaction systems under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. The specific process requirements dictate both the degree of mixing required and the type of agitation employed to achieve the desired results.' Many continuous-flow process applications feature tanks operating in series to provide a discrete number of stages and a known residence time for the slurry. Because these tanks operate at a constant level in an overflow mode, the mixer must maintain uniform solids concentration and size distribution throughout the tank; failure to achieve uniformity results in accumulation of coarse solids in the tank, ultimately leading to a process or mechanical failure. Downward-pumping, axial-flow mixing impellers are widely employed to produce uniform solids suspension. The specific impeller type, number, size, and power draw is a function of each given situation. The use of high-efficiency, fluid-foil impellers (Figure I) has evolved as a recognized standard for these flow­controlled applications. Recent small-scale experimentation and full-scale experience has demonstrated that, when uniformity is required, capital and operating expense can be minimized by employing an additional upper impeller pumping in the upward direction.

Particle-size Distribution Specifications for Particulates. Feed to and finished products from size-reduction operations are defined in terms of the particulate sizes involved. It is also well to know whether the ultimate individual particle is being measured, or, if any aggregation or agglomeration of particles exists, whether this has been created by the size-reduction operation. The most complete description of a powder is given by its particle¬size distribution. This can be plotted in terms of cumulative percent oversize or undersize in relation to the diameters of particles, or it can be plotted as a distribution of the amounts present in each unit of diameter against the several diameters. It is common to employ a weight basis for percentage, but there are some data in the literature where frequency, or number of particles, is used. The basis of percent¬age, whether weight, frequency, or some less commonly used factor, should be specified, as also should be stated the diameter, its units, and preferably whether determined by sieve, settling velocity, or other¬wise. Fig. I presents two sets of distributions-ore cumulative and the other in unit intervals. The slopes of the 5-µ intervals of the cumulative curves are converted to percent per micron and plotted as a block, or histogram, from which smooth curves are derived. Powder A has a narrower, or tighter, size range for the bulk of its weight than powder B. Both materials have the same weights below and above the size marked by the arrow. Simpler treatments of distribution are possible. In some cases the significant value is the top size. Since the 100% point is dubious, some amount, as 95 or 98%, so specified, can be called top size. In other cases the percent on some sieve helps define coarseness. Merely stating that all, or all but a small percentage, passes a given sieve is inadequate for defining the true fineness or a material. Complete parti¬cle-size analysis to show the distribution is essential for most compari¬sons and calculations. Particle-Size Equations. A number of equations have been pro¬posed to correlate the quantity of a particulate material with its parti¬cle size to obtain a distribution relationship. Steady-state material balances calculated from data measured at various locations around process units are useful for many purposes, such as metallurgical accounting, on-line control, and the development of mathematical models. Often it is possible to calculate material balances by several independent procedures when excess measurement information, i.e., redundant data, is available. Clearly, if the data were collected without measurement errors, a theoretical condition never found in practice, all material balances calculated from redundant data would be in agreement. The real situation is that error exists in practical measurements, so that the results of material balances determined from available optional procedures differ. Consequently, best fit computational procedures to improve the material balances by taking measurement errors into account have been formulated. Such procedures can be used also to judge whether measurements are grossly in error due to either faulty observations or defective data sensing devices. A variety of mathematical techniques are available which serve to adjust raw data. The adjusted data permit mass balancing that does not depend on the computational method. To illustrate the need for an adjustment procedure, Table 1 shows a raw data set acquired around the Brenda Mines Ltd. No. 4 grinding circuit shown schematically in Fig. 1. The West German Ruhrkohle AG and the engineering company BEDIA have developed an emission control system for diesel engines that is suitable for use in underground coal mining, consisting of a granular catalytic converter and a dry cooling system. Its first ever application was to a diesel mining locomotive. In the catalytic converter the exhaust gases pass over porous, platinum-covered ceramic balls in a double tube, oxidizing CO to CO2. Simultaneously, soot particles in the gases are subjected to afterburning. Laboratory tests carried out by BEDIA and at Aachen University of Technology showed that there was a reduction of over 80% in the CO content of the exhaust gases and over 30% in soot emission. The dry cooling system fulfills all the requirements demanded of exhaust cooling underground and does not have the disadvantages of conventional systems. It needs little maintenance, and it is light and compact. The most important components are a waterjacketed exhaust manifold, a tube and shell heat exchanger, a new type of flame arrestor in a stacked crimped ribbon design and a Venturi diluter. The system has its own thermostatically-controlled cooling circuit to keep the exhaust temperature between 120° C and 150° C, thus effectively preventing the tubes becoming blocked up.

In designing a gold extraction circuit utilising carbon­in-pulp (CIP) technology a number of process options can be considered. These include various combinations of leach or pre-leach, CIP or carbon-in-leach (CIL) and conventional counter-current or carousel CIP (or CIL) circuits. Factors affecting the process selection include the project's sensitivity to capital and working costs, the project life, and the mineralogy and head grade. Each process option has it's own advantages and disadvantages. This paper compares both the financial and technical aspects of the flow sheet options. The flow sheet, design aspects and operating performance of Anglogold's West Wits No. 2 and 3 Plants which are leach, pump-cell circuits are described.

Wastewaters generated during the extraction of gold from the ore can contain a variety of contaminants such as cyanide, heavy metals and arsenic. Proper management of these wastewaters is therefore necessary to minimize the negative impact of gold mining and milling operations on the environment. The Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC),located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, has been involved in several studies related to the evaluation of various effluent treatment technologies which are relevant to the treatment and proper management of gold mill effluents. These studies have included bench and pilot scale tests, and the evaluation offull-scale systems. Furthermore, the WTC staff developed protocols for cyanide analysis in gold mill effluents, and a mathematical model for predicting the degradation of cyanide in tailings ponds. The information generated by the WTC staff has been referenced in several reports and papers published over the last ten years (Schmidt et.al. 1982, Simovic & Snodgrass 1989, Whittle et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1991). Recently, the WTC has started to develop a micro­computer based expert system for use by decision makers in the gold mining industry and relevant government agencies who are involved in process design, process evaluation, costing, evaluation of the best practicable technology, approval of suggested effluent management systems, and so on. This paper presents some relevant background information and a discussion of the latest version of the expert system being developed by the WTC.

Facing lower gold prices, gold mine operators throughout the world are seeking ways to reduce costs for treating refractory sulfide ores. Many gold mines, currently producing oxide ores, have underlying refractory sulfide deposits and the operators could extend the mine life by processing these sulfides. Fortunately, oxidation technologies for refractory ores need not be complex nor costly. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed heap biooxidation technologies (GEOCOAT™) for treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates. GEOCOATTM uses simple low cost unit operations common to heap leaching of gold and copper ores. The cost effectiveness and flexibility of GEOCOAT™ heap biooxidation allows mining companies to expand operations to include refract01y ore. In addition, GEOCOAT™ can be utilized to supplement or replace existing oxidation processes such as roasting, autoclaving, or agitated tank biooxidation, and to treat a lower resource grade than is currently economic. The GEOCOAT™ technology involves coating sulfide concentrates onto sized support rocks and biooxidizing the sulfides in a heap configuration. After biooxidation the concentrate is stripped from the support rock, neutralized and leached in conventional cyanidation facilities. Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) produces over 885,000 ounces of gold per year from oxide and refractory ores at its Obuasi operations in Ghana. Refractory flotation concentrates are treated in roasters and in the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation facility. In August 1998, AGC and GeoBiotics jointly constructed and operated a field demonstration heap of the GEOCOATTM process at the Obuasi operations. The heap contained I 082 tonnes of support rock and 125 tonnes of concentrate. The heap was approximately 19 meters square at the base and 3.8 meters high, and ran for 88 days after which the concentrate was reclaimed. Average gold recovery after biooxidation was 91.5% with a NaCN consumption of 8.6 kg/t. Baseline gold recovery by direct cyanidation of the concentrate was 53.8%.

Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. Production In 1993, it was estimated that United States mine production of barite increased 24%. Barite consumption, either sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 39% and imports increased 4%, according to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 80% of the total, followed by Georgia. It is estimated that 83% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 17% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Prices The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 1%, according to the USBM. The declared value c.i.f. US port of all imported crude barite during 1993 decreased from $40.09/t ($36.37/st) in 1992 to $37.72/t ($34.22/st). Uses Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals, fillers in paper, plastics, brake shoes and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased due to the higher average rig count during 1993. The average number of rotary rigs operating in the United States was 754, 5% greater than the 1992 average of 717. Imports Crude barite imports in 1993 were 443 kt (488,000 st) greater than 1992, representing an increase of 137%. Imports accounted for 67% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States.

INTRODUCTION This presentation is concerned with the administrative and technical capability of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) to assure compliance with the individual exposure limit for radon daughters (currently 4 WLM per year). It is not concerned with the epidemiological bases for setting the exposure limit. Moreover, the intent is to show how sophisticated methodologies and advanced technologies, applied to radon daughter concentration measurements in uranium mines, convey the spirit of compliance by providing better estimates than do the historical methods. These better estimates mean that more accurate and more precise estimates of each worker's exposure are determined using these more modern methods and devices. The estimates so derived should provide more convincing evidence to an individual worker that his assigned exposure is a valid indicator of his true exposure. In addition, a perspective on the exposure estimate in relation to the exposure limit is given as further evidence that an exposure limit is not the dividing line between "safe" and "unsafe" exposures. A brief description is given of the compliance aspects of the Atomic Energy Control Regulations and of the limitations of purely statistical non-compliance procedures. Most of the emphasis of the paper will be placed on the uncertainties associated with conventional radon daughter exposure determination and the means being employed (and anticipated) to reduce these uncertainties. NON-COMPLIANCE Under current Atomic Energy Control Regulations (1978), the annual individual exposure limit for radon daughters is given without reference to the possible methods of sampling and calculation of radon daughter exposure and without any reference to possible uncertainties or their magnitudes. This is common in such statutes, the details of sampling, calculation, error analysis, and so on, being left for licence conditions or provided as a specific guideline to the licensee on the matter of compliance with the Regulation. Since the exposure limit is contained in the Regulations, compliance with it is absolute, as with any other law. In Canada, a state of non-compliance with the radon daughter exposure limit exists when an exposure (attributed to an employee) is reported by the licensee to exceed the limit. No uncertainty in the measurements or in the overall determination of exposure is reported nor is any requested. Removal of the worker and the loss of his services are the immediate and direct penalty suffered by the licensee for failure to maintain the exposure at, or below, the limit. A worker may be re-instated to employment for the balance of the reporting period only if the licensee can assure the AECB that further significant exposure to the worker will not ensue. In other jurisdictions, such as the United States, non-compliance is defined on a statistical basis. For example, NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health presents procedures for calculating the 95% Lower Confidence Limit (LCL) in order to "compare the results of occupational environmental sampling to an occupational health standard and make a decision with a known chance of making an incorrect decision that a state of non-compliance exists" (Leidel and Busch, 1975). (In the nomenclature of this presentation, exposure limit would be used in place of "standard", in the NIOSH sense). Furthermore, it is emphasized in the NIOSH document that such numerical comparisons "are necessary only if the sample mean is greater than the standard". The NIOSH document points out, quite correctly, that the "statistical procedures presented below will not detect and do not allow for analysis of highly inaccurate results, i.e., systematic (non-random) errors or mistakes ... If a systematic error is known to exist in an instrument or analytical procedure then correct the sample mean of the data before analyzing for non-compliance". It is certainly not the purpose of this paper to criticize the sophisticated statistical approach to non-compliance as given in the NIOSH document or in similar approaches used in other jurisdictions. Rather, the purpose is to approach, with some introspection, the question of the determination of exposure by the employer for his employee and especially the employee's understanding of, and confidence in, the accuracy of the exposure determination and its relation to the exposure limit. INTRODUCTION The art of raise boring has seen rapid development and use in underground mines both for primary development and production during the past 10 years. The intensive full scale tests by a major mining company in the Precambrian rocks of the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, have lead the way to the general acceptance of the raise drills. The rock successfully raise bored in the Sudbury area has compressive strengths varying from 30,000 to 50,000 p.s.i. As a result of the intensive study, it became evident to many mining companies that raise boring could be adapted to many mining systems. Many companies have modified their planned mining methods to incorporate raise boring. The result has been a more rapid development of their mine and naturally, an economic advantage to them. In conjunction with the acceptance of the raise drills, the range of equipment has broadened in terms of size, capability and efficiency. The concept of raise drilling and the general arrangement of the equipment has seen little change. At some locations there have been reported successes of drilling pilot holes up

For many years there has been increasing pressure on mining companies, not without some justification, to design tailings storage facilities which guarantee some degree of protection against process solutions entering local groundwater and surface water flows. A fairly straightforward approach to achieving this has been to design conventional water-retaining type structures, and this has often been reinforced by the need to store large volumes of process water and seasonal run-off within the tailings facility. The conventional design uses naturally occurring geological barriers and a conventional embankment with possibly a grout curtain, or artificial barriers around the entire facility, using either imported low permeability soils, admixtures, or synthetic liners. While these approaches may achieve the primary objective of minimizing seepage, various other factors should be considered. Firstly, by depositing the tailings slurry in a sub-aqueous manner, the tailings, especially if relatively fine grained, will settle to very low densities and little or no on-going consolidation may occur over the operating life of the mine, There have been many cases where measured pore pressures within the tailings mass equal the total overburden stress, i.e., no consolidation and no strength, many years after decommissioning.

Accurate positioning information is a central step in the process of increasing automation and digitalization in the mining industry. Underground mine environments are prime examples for GNSS-denied environments that pose several additional challenges for the employed indoor positioning system (IPS). This work presents an ultra-wideband (UWB)- based system specifically tailored for underground mine environments. Initially, the UWB technology is reviewed and basic concepts of IPS are explained. Both software and hardware are described in detail, including positioning algorithms, electrical circuitry and the mining-compatible enclosure. Finally, the results from field tests in an underground mine are presented and positioning performance and the influence of dilution of precision (DOP) on positioning results are empirically evaluated. The results show that the localization errors are mostly below 1 m. Individual zones of high localization errors are suspected to be caused by noise interference. Significant DOP influence due to the mining drift geometry can be confirmed. The system shows promising localization results for different mining applications, while influences negatively impacting the accuracy are presented as items for future research.

The international manufacturers of construction machinery are responding to these challenges, and they will be presenting their innovations in all these fields at bauma 2013. bauma, the international trade fair for mining and construction machinery, mining vehicles, and building material machines, takes place from April 15 to 21, 2013 at the Messe Munchen exhibition center in Munich, Germany. The last bauma, in 2010, attracted 3,256 exhibitors from 53 countries, and more than 420,000 visitors from more than 200 nations. Covering a total of 555,000 m2 (5.97 million sq ft) of exhibition space, bauma is one of the largest trade shows in the world. This year?s fair is expected to surpass the 2010 figures. Here are some examples of the new developments visitors can expect to see at the show.
