The Jualin Gold Prospect is centered on Johnson Creek, approximately 40 air miles north-west of Juneau, Alaska. The property is on the southern end of the Kakuhan Range with Berners Bay immediately to the south and Lynn Canal to the west. The property is accessible directly by helicopter from Juneau or by float plane to the head of a 5.5 mile gravel road that begins on the north side of Berners Bay and terminates at the old workings of the Jualin Mine near the center of the property.

This project involves the reconstruction of a 1,100 ft. long by 75 ft. wide segment of an existing 4 to 5 track subway under Northern Boulevard in the Borough of Queens in New York City. The project includes widening the existing subway to permit the construction of new inbound and outbound subway (T1 and T2) ramps adjacent to and under existing operating tracks. The plan of the project is shown in Fig. 1. Existing tall buildings along the job site and a contaminated groundwater plume under an adjacent rail yard required construction of slurry concrete walls along the east and west construction limits. Groundwater cutoff across the north and south construction limits of the subway was achieved by jet grout walls built across the subway invert slab between existing track and third rails. The work involved dewatering the construction site to a depth of about 50 ft. below street grade. This is a four year project and includes extensive work to maintain and protect subway and vehicular traffic of over half a million commuters a day through the work area. The project cost was $160,000,000.

[The site] [Z]irovski vrh uranium ore deposit is located in the extreme north-western part of Yugoslavia, some fourthy kilometers from the capital of Socialist Republic of Slovenia, Ljubljana, not far from the Italian and Austrian border. The sandstone type deposit of uranium ore with medium grade is located in a foothill of Julian Alps. The site shows some typical conditions for this region, which demand special attention in respect to the incorporation of an uranium treatment facility into environment. Among these specific conditions the following site characteristics should be mentioned: - populated area of agricultural and recreational value, - unconvenient climatic conditions with excessive rainfall and long lasting temperature inversions in the winter time, - very pure surface and underground waters which supply the drinking water reservate for large area including the capital of Slovenia, - sharp relief, - unconvenient geological structure. The choise of technology The intention to produce uranium and at the same time respecting the natural characteristics and existing uses of the site made the design of the ore treatment facility relatively difficult one. In general, there were two basic alternatives available perform the task. First alternative was to adopt the usual technological flowsheet with wet tailings disposal and with discharge of used water i.e. liquid effluents into the river. In order to prevent the negative impact of such technology on the sourrounding area sophisticated water purification installation and costly measures in wet tailings disposal e.g. impermeabilisation of large areas by concrete injections, large dam constructions, uncertain capturing of the water sources should be employed. Second alternative was to modify the usual flowsheet by employing the maximal recycling of liquid effluents to the process and to dispose the solid

The process design of a metallurgical plant follows logical steps, one built on another, to define the circuit requirements. The methodology used and documentation produced is the same for a pre-feasibility study, feasibility study or a complete design, regardless of the process complexity or the commodity. The only difference is the amount of detail developed at each stage. SRK Consulting, an independent, international consulting practice that provides focused advice and solutions to clients, mainly from earth and water resource industries, has consulted on many mining projects around the world. The company was formed in 1974 and now employs more than 1,600 professionals in more than 50 offices on six continents. According to SRK experts, the first element in plant design is collecting metallurgical testwork or operating data from an existing plant. The testwork identifies the process, the metallurgical recoveries and product qualities and establishes the process parameters for economic recovery of the commodity. Test samples must represent both the whole orebody and the feed over the life of the mine, showing the mineral?s variability. With this data available, the process design can be developed.

Introduction Surface mining is a business, and the objective of most businesses is to make as much money as possible within certain responsible constraints. Businesses normally measure their potential to make money by estimating the discounted cash flow rate of return on new projects or the net present value for ongoing projects. These estimators of profitability are calculated using the following well-known equation: [ ] where i is the year, n is the total number of years, A, is the after tax net cash generation in year I, r is the discount rate and NPV is the net present value. In its simplest form, when the value of r makes the NPV equal to zero, the discounted cash flow-rate of return (DCF-ROR) is defined. The maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified at the point where the NPV or DCF-ROR is at a maximum. Depending on the measure used (DCF-ROR or discount rate) for calculating the NPV, the definition of recoverable reserve will be different for exactly the same deposit. Maximization of the measure of profitability and the economically recoverable reserves should not be separated from the mining method and sequence of exploiting the reserve. The surface mining methods may involve multiple-pass development of the resource, mining to the ultimate limit in one pass or a combination of the two methods with backfill. Multiple-pass development When planning a multiple-pass mining operation, it is important to determine the width of pit expansions that are appropriate for a specific situation. Production personnel typically want wide, open work areas where operations can be set up to run at peak efficiency. While this is understandable, the trade-off between highly efficient production operations and an overinvestment in stripping should be carefully weighed. As long as safety is not compromised, a few cents per bank cubic yard increase in operating cost due to lower productivity by working in more confined spaces may well be offset by a decrease in the overall short-term stripping requirements. A mini study on productivity and cost should help quantify this cost before deciding on minimum phasing requirements. The bigger challenge associated with establishing smaller work areas is securing operations and management buy-in to marginally lower productivity when reporting results. When cost reduction is the important management goal and everyone is focusing on unit costs, one sometimes loses sight of the goal of total cost management and, even more importantly, maximum profitability. The first pit should be defined by the first grouping of recoverable mineral that has the highest after-tax unit value and forms a feasible mining unit. The assumed mining of the first pit should be followed by the assumed mining of the second most profitable practical pit or pit expansion. If this process of grouping and sequencing is followed until the profitability approaches zero, the general sequence required to extract the maximum economically recoverable reserve is identified. The curve in Fig. 1 is constructed for a rate of production, R, and a quality management strategy, Q, by calculating the NPV for a series of sequences, with each sequence assuming that the operations are terminated on successively lower profit pits. These values are plotted to form the curve in Fig. 1. If the operation ceases on a pit that has too high of a profit, opportunity is lost, and the NPV is lower than the maximum. The NPV curve peaks and starts to decline before the zero-profit pit is assumed mined. This occurs because the money invested in advanced stripping would have made more money invested at the discount rate than by mining the next pit expansion. Therefore, the maximum economically recoverable reserve is defined by the pit limit corresponding to the maximum NPV. There may be an opportunity to refine the definition of the "ultimate pit" around the maximum-value point. The precise definition of the ultimate pit early in the mine life may or may not be important today, depending on how far off in the future these limits will be reached. The great increase in post-World War I1 use of molybdenum was made possible by discoveries of that metal in porphyry molybdenum and porphyry copper deposits. This section documents significant porphyry molybdenum discoveries of the post-war period. The most important discovery was Henderson in Colorado. It is not only one of the world's largest and richest, but it was found by a team of geologists who defined the hood model and tested it successfully at Henderson. Under the leadership of Stewart Wallace, these scientists established a set of criteria for exploration for Henderson-type de- posits that was copied by the industry. The discovery bf vertical cylinder type porphyry molybdenum deposits was less renowned. Boss Mountain in British Columbia and then Mt. Pleasant in New Brunswick were given relatively scant notice, compared with the Henderson discovery. However, these deposits have geometrics distinct from that found in the typical hood, which directly affects their exploration characteristics. Mt. Pleasant, included in this section, is a well defined, near vertical breccia pipe. Both the Henderson and Mt. Pleasant discoveries were made by relatively small groups operating independently of the bureaucracy that characterizes large corporations. The management role in each case was one of encouragement. In addition, Wallace had the beneficial experience of working for Climax, whose objective was the discovery of porphyry molybdenum deposits. Henderson was the natural outgrowth of the exploration effort by those who studied and understood the Climax deposit.

A recent Nevada Gold Mines research program focused on the pressure oxidation (POx) pretreatment of a Carlin-type double refractory ore from the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The research team found that both arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous matter were highly oxidized within an hour at 300 °C using a bench-top autoclave reactor and that the gold recovery from the residues after cyanide/carbon-in-leach (CIL) approached the technical limit set by the amount of gold encapsulated by silicate minerals. Although the 60-min pretreatment at 300 °C yields robust performance when treating a whole ore, copper additives can catalyze the oxidation rate of carbonaceous matter and reduce the residence time needed at elevated temperatures. Certain gangue minerals are susceptible to dissolution in acidic solutions at 300 °C, and this may cause poor gold recovery. This recovery challenge is mitigated by keeping free acid in the discharge solution below a key threshold.

Equipment capacities of a sample of Illinois surface coal mines representing about 60% of surface production in the state were studied. Available equipment capacity was compared with the required capacity, as indicated by coal production and stripping ratios reported. Most mines sampled showed surplus equipment capacity, which if avoided, would result in substantial cost savings. The surplus capacity results mostly from market fluctuations that result in underutilization of equipment. Study findings underline the importance of market assessment at the time of mine planning and of communication between marketing and engineering arms of a coal firm.

Investigations of bedrock within subsided areas over abandoned coal mines in Illinois reveal very little disturbance of the bedrock. In areas that have surface subsidence of 0.3 to 1 m (1 to 3.25 ft), examination of cores from exploration drilling and investigations of the boreholes by means of closed circuit television have shown that fractures are spaced at least 0.9 to 3.6 m (3 to 12 ft) apart. They are located within a zone 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above the collapsed area in coal mines 42.6 to 112.7 m (140 to 370 ft) deep. The dip of the fractures ranges from 25° to 60°, cutting across nearly horizontal sedimentary bedding planes. The amount of fracturing found in the collapsed area decreased as the amount of soft, weak materials increased in the immediate overburden of the mine.

In late 1995 at the Randol symposium in Squaw Valley, I gave a paper which described the Itos project flowsheet. At that time, project construction was nearly completed and stmtup was close. This paper describes the ltos operation since then. To summa­rize things, startup occurred partially in late 1995 with full start­up of all components in about mid 1996. From then until now, April 1998, the plant has been running at partial capacity and has yet to achieve full production rates.

Permeability in the blast furnace shaft is adversely affected by low-temperature reduction degradation of sinters. The fundamental cause of this is the expansion of the iron oxide phase resulting from the reduction of hematite to magnetite. The present study shows that expansion behavior during the hematite/magnetite reduction .step and the resulting microstructure are strongly influenced by the reduction temperature (partial oxygen pressure), the reducing agent and the nature of the hematite. The reduction rate is of minor importance. A reduction mechanism is proposed that can explain the dilation behavior and the magnetite microstructure. The results provide better insight into the reduction degradation behavior.

This report concerns Contract No. 3B of the Port Richmond Project, for the Department of Water Resources of the City of New York. It involves the construction of 7, 000 ft. of 7 ft. finish I. D. interceptor sewer by tunneling in soft ground, as well as associated manholes, regulator chambers, siphons and miscellaneous sewers and structures, beneath a heavily travelled perimeter road in Staten Island. The Contractor is Richmond Constructors, a joint venture of Grow Tunneling Corp., sponsor, MacLean Grove & Company, Incorporated, Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc., and Andrew Catapano Co., Inc. Project manager is Paul DeMarco, Vice-President of Grow Tunneling Corp. The cortract, as designed and bid, requires the use of liner plates 101 -0" O. D., and both cast iron and steel designs of several widths were included in the bid documents by the owner. The specifications also required the contractor to install and put into operating condition, prior to commencement of mining, a complete low pressure compressed air plant and all accessories for mining in compressed air, even though the contractor was given the option of using other methods of ground water control. A third requirement of the specifications was that a shield be used, either manual or mechanical, and with full provision for "breasting". Since it has been demonstrated that silica caused phagocytic cells to activate lipoxygenase metabolism of unsaturated fatty acids we thought selective inhibition of this metabolic pathway might be helpful in treatment of silicosis. It is known that lipoxygenase metabolism plays a role in the pathogenesis of a variety of inflammatory and hypersensitivity conditions. Further, it is believed that the alveolar phagocytic cells which engulf silica begin the inflammatory cycle which produces the metabolic products, cytokines and growth factors which causes fibrosis in the lung. There have been indications that drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase can inhibit fibrosis from other causes. Previously, we developed a method which detects the activity of lipoxygenase metabolism by measuring free radical oxidation via light production or chemiluminescence (CL). We decided to apply this method to phagocytic cells that would be found in the lung in the presence of silica with and without newly developed inhibitors of the lipoxygenase reaction. We used drugs which inhibit lipoxygenase directly including AA861 (TAKEDA), A63162 (Abbott), and an inhibitor that scavenges free radicals produced from the lipoxygenase reaction, nordihydroguairetic acid. In addition we used an indirect inhibitor, tetrandrine. We found drug inhibition of silica activated CL from alveolar macrophages, neutrophils and human leukemia (HL-60) cells differentiated with DMSO. Nordihydroguairetic acid 2x10-5M produced almost complete inhibition in all three cell types. In human leukemia cells (HL-60) A63162 and tetrandrine were equally inhibitory at 42% while in human neutrophils A63162 and tetrandrine were less active 22 and 10% respectively. In macrophages A63162 and AA861 were less than 50% inhibitory to cellular CL at 2xl0-5M. Direct assay of tetrandrine (2x10-5M) with sodium arachidonate and soybean lipoxygenase reveals no inhibition. All antilipoxygenase drugs regardless of mechanism were inhibitory to cellular chemiluminescence from all three types of phagocytic cells. These drugs alone or in mixtures could prove useful in treatment of silicosis.

The restoration of surface mining landscapes requires the (re)creation of ecosystems. In Lusatia (eastern Germany), large-scale open-cast lignite mining operations generated spoil dumps widely consisting of acidified, phytotoxic substrates. Amelioration and rehabilitation measures have been developed and applied to these substrates since the 1950s. However, it is still not clear whether these approaches are sustainable. This paper reports on collaborative research work into the ecological potential of forest ecosystem development on typical minesites in the Lusatian lignite district. At first sight, pine stands on minesites along a chronosequence comprising about 35 years did not show differences when compared with stands on non-mined sites of the general region. Furthermore, with some modification, conceptual models for flora and fauna succession in forest stands on non-mined sites seem to be applicable, at least for the early stages of forest ecosystem development. For example, soil organism abundance and activity at minesites had already reached levels typical of non-mined sites after about 20-30 years. In contrast, mine soils are very different from non-mined soils of the test region. Chemically, mine soil development is dominated by processes originating from pyrite oxidation. Geogenic, i.e. lignitic, soil organic carbon was shown to substitute for some functions of pedogenic soil organic matter. Rooting was hampered but not completely impeded in strongly acidified soil compartments. Roots and mycorrhizae are apparently able to make use of the characteristic heterogeneity of young mine soils. Considering these recent results and the knowledge accumulated during more than 30 years of research on minesite rehabilitation internationally, it can be stated that minesite restoration might be used as an ideal case study for forest ecosystem development starting at "point zero" on "terra nova".

Launching a full-size pressurized-face Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in difficult ground conditions is always challenging. Recently, few projects have innovated the process by scaling the trenchless method of pipe jacking, and modified steel bell approach, to facilitate the launching of a full-size TBM without the need for large and deep trenches, starter/tail tunnels, or for incrementally installing supporting gear as the machine advances. This paper presents three such projects; evaluates the post-bid contractor proposed modifications; details the innovative use of pre-cast pipe segments to facilitate machine launch; and, provides an overall assessment of the benefits, challenges and lessons learned related to the modified approach.

The Climax Mine of AMAX's Climax Molybdenum Division is currently producing approximately 34,000 tons of molybdenum ore per day from two underground levels (see Figure I), and initial design is underway for the next deeper (1200) level. The aim of this report is to present the methods of site evaluation used at Climax for cavability determinations and underground support design. Climax succeeds with its panel caving system of mining (Julin, 1973) (Figure 2) largely because of the presence of pervasive geologic structural discontinuities. The stockwork ore body at Climax was formed by the multiple intrusion of mid-Tertiary rhyolitic magmas into Precambrian granite, schist and gneiss, and the hydrothermal emplacement of molybdenite into the network of fractures that were generated during the forceful upward intrusion of magma. Subsequently, intrusive events that were more deeply seated refractured the overlying, ore- bearing stock and propagated a complex system of axial and radial fractures. Post-ore movement along the Mosquito Fault (Wallace, 1968) and its associated stranded shear zones further fractured the ore body and disordered the existent geologic structure. The result of these structural events is a brittle, crystalline ore body that is transected by a complex pattern of faults, shear zones, and joints that augment cave initiation and enhance comminution of the ore blocks. Generalizations can be made about the structural trends within the ore deposit (King, 1946; Kendorski, 1973), however, the intensity and orientation of geologic structure is by no means uniform throughout the ore body. The relative intensities of silicic and argillic alteration are also highly variable (Vanderwilt and King, 1955). As a consequence, no single rock-mass model suffices as a standard for mine design, and site characterization for cavability and support design is a continuous process.

To obtain a reliable comparison between conical and cylindrical separatory vessels used in dynamic dense-medium separation systems, the following two studies were made: a study of the swirling flow in conical and cylindrical vessels using laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and a study of the behavior of suspensions of magnetite and ferrosilicon in water in both separators. It was found that the tangential velocity profiles differ in conical and cylindrical vessels. In a conical cyclone, free vortex conditions affect the largest part of the vessel, while in a cylindrical vessel, the motion approaches that of a forced vortex, i.e., that of a centrifuge. It was also found that the conical vessel manifests higher centrifigal acceleration and very strong densifying (the density differential) and, hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is large. It was found that the cylindrical vessel manifests lower centrifugal acceleration and low densifying, i.e., low-density differentials, and hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is small. Also, due to greater densifying, the density cut-point in cyclones is higher than the operating medium density, while, in cylindrical vessels, the density cut- point is closer to the medium density. The results provide an interesting description of the differing behaviors of conical and cylindrical vessels, and they help explain the differences in pegormance between the two types of separators.

This paper presents an analysis of the dynamics of bit wear on the productivity of continuous miners. Two field surveys were carried out. The first survey assessed the impact of bit wear on productivity and production cost. The second survey studied the wear characteristics of the cutting tool (i.e., magnitude, forms, and mechanisms of bit wear, Primary factors affecting bit wear were identified. Laboratory experiments were carried out to study in detail the effect of some of these primary factors on wear. Results indicate, that bit wear has a significant effect on the productivity a continuous miners. Furthermore, under severe geologic conditions (i.e. cutting rock partings in roof and floor) bit wear not only hampers the productivity, but also increase the production cost due to a higher consumption of bits. This study also indicated that beyond 20% of the conical height loss (which corresponds to 7% of the weight loss) the rate a bit wear accelerates. This increased rate of wear is an indication of higher abrasion between bit body and cutting material, resulting in a dustier environment.

Both On-Line and Off- Line optimization procedures have been employed by industry, assisted either by operators or by digital computers. In every case, dollar benefits have accrued.
