Although most bauxite mined is used to make metallic alu¬minum, more than a million tons of bauxite is used annually in the United States in the manufacture of refractories, chemicals, abrasives, and cement. Raw material requirements are becoming increasingly difficult to meet because high-grade bauxite, required for some uses, is limited. The supply of raw material for high-alumina refractories is most critical because a low-iron bauxite is needed. Although there are substantial bauxite reserves in the world, bauxite suitable for use in refractories is limited to a few districts.

Underground coal mining machinery utilizes portable electric sables, "trailing cables." to obtain power from load centers or distribution boxes. Cables are frequently damaged since mobile equipment, poor lighting, and restricted space are inherent to coal mining operations. Normally, the damage is repaired by splicing--the joining of one or more severed conductors and replacing insulation and jacket. Figure 1 illustrates a typical single conductor splice. Although the repair seems simple, difficulty of the splicing process is exemplified by the many safety hazards and frequent production delays that result from defective splices. Forty-two cable splice related injuries were reported to the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1972 and 1973. Additionally, 17 splices related fires were reported in the three year period prior to December 1972. Assuming the damaged area is quickly located, an average splice time for a two conductor cable is twenty minutes. Some operators estimate this delay is incurred once per day per operating section. If one ton per minute is averaged throughout the shift, each unit could loose 4800 tons per year from splice delays. An estimated cost for materials and labor to make a splice is $20. The expenditure could result in a $4800 annual cost per section. The estimated expense does not include wages of other personnel waiting for the repair to be completed. Nevertheless, labor and materials cost is minor compared to the income lost from decreased production.

This paper presents technical issues in the design and management of a retorted oil shale disposal site. Major physical and geochemical mechanisms which affect the disposal are: heat transport, moisture migration, chemical species transport, auto-ignition, and mechanical behavior alterations of the retorted oil shale pile. The interaction of these mechanisms and their relative magnitude will affect the environmental behavior of the pile. The paper discusses the coupling between the mechanisms, presents a framework to quantify the processes by laboratory and field measurements, and in addition discusses the use of mathematical models to provide quantitative predictions.

Introduction In contrast to the general type of crushing mechanism in which the crushing surfaces alternately approach and withdraw from each other, described earlier in this section, and continuous-pressure break¬ers such as rolls and roller mills that will be described in a later chapter, impact crushers load by striking pieces of rock while in free fall and hurling them at high speed against stationary surfaces. Because the impact crusher depends for its effectiveness upon high velocity, wear is greater than in the slower-moving jaw and cone¬type wear parts, and for this reason its use is strictly limited to rela¬tively soft, friable, and sticky rocks that are characteristic of many nonmetallic mineral deposits. A few of these are phosphates, lime¬stone, barite, clay, asbestos rock, and coal. However, several examples of their use on soft lead-zinc and precious metal ores have been known. Although the use of impact crushers is expanding today into the range of ores containing as much as 15-18% silica, Taggart16 set the practical limit at 5%, and in the 1940s and 1950s several installa¬tions in the US and western Europe exceeded the limits of economical maintenance and were quickly superseded by the slower-moving, con¬ventional crushers. A rock that tends to be plastic or bouncy in a jaw or gyratory crusher when the force is applied slowly to reach ultimate strength, may become brittle with rapid loading and thus increase the effective¬ness of the applied forces. For this reason it is to be expected that as the quality of hammers, grates, plates, and cages improves with advances in steel technology, the use of high-speed crushers of this kind will increase. Terminology Modern usage differentiates between the impactor and the hammer mill, the former relying primarily on the impact of hammers (fixed or free-swinging) and secondarily upon pieces striking one another or steel surfaces; the hammer mill relies on both the centrifugal impact force of free-swinging hammers and the attrition and shear action between these hammers and well-placed grates suspended at the bot¬tom just below the hammer circle. The hammer mill, because of its grate discharge, restricts discharge of oversize rock to the grate open¬ing, while at the same time providing a trap for removal of tramp iron or other uncrushables. The impactor discharges free, so generally works with a screen to control product sizes. The question of terminology, impactor vs, hammer mill, creates difficulties because the similarities appear to outweigh the differences by far; if one were to list the similarities in order of importance and then the differences, he would be forced to conclude that they would best be dealt with as a single kind of crusher. Taggart16 gave it four names and added "as it is variously known," but it must be remembered that in 1945 the machine was nearly exclusively of the flailing-hammer type, while today the fixed-hammer rotor is also com¬mon. In this chapter the terms impactor and hammer mill will be used where they seem to apply. It is perhaps unfortunate that this terminology is being confused with rock breaking at the mine, usually with hand-held tools, e.g., the article "High-Energy Impact Rockbreaking" by Grantmyre and Hawkes, CIM Bulletin, August 1975. General Description Impact breakers, impact crushers, and hammer mills accomplish material breaking and reduction primarily through impact action of the material with fixed or free-swinging hammers revolving about a central rotor. The material to be crushed enters through an opening at the top or top side known as the "feed opening" or "hopper opening" and falls into the path of rotation (hammer circle) of the hammers. Initial breakage is accomplished in midair by collision of the dropping feed material with high-speed hammers. The second stage of breakage occurs when the pieces hit plates or breaker bars which line the crusher boxlike frame. Hammer mills rely further on a shearing and attrition action between free-swinging hammers and grid bars or grates at the crusher bottom which restrict discharge of oversize material until it is broken sufficiently to pass through the grid opening. The term hammer is used in reference to the piece which strikes the material, whether it is fixed on the rotor or free-swinging. It

High stress underground mining poses a significant challenge to rock mechanics and rock engineering. To overcome theses challenges significative improvements in solutions and best practices of the design and operation of mines under high stress have been developed and implemented. This paper presents certain topics related to the management of high stress for sustainable underground mining. The topics include; the effect of preconditioning techniques (destress blasting and hydraulic fracturing) in the seismic rock mass response to underground mining and the dynamic behaviour of rock support systems. The opportunities associated with research in rock mechanics and practical rock engineering are discussed.

With the exception of reports on commercial deposits of kaolin, fuller's earth, and other specialty type clays, there is little published information on the extent, properties, and potential uses of the clay resources of Florida. Recent studies by the Florida Bureau of Geology in cooperation with the University of Florida and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have proven the existence of two extensive Miocene clay deposits, one in peninsular Pinellas County and the other in southeastern Charlotte County. Drilling and subsequent testing of the clays from these deposits indicate their potential for economic development. Both deposits consist of montmorillonite type clays, have an average thickness of 25 to 35 feet, and are overlain by unconsolidated Pleistocene sediments. Preliminary firing tests indicate that the clays from Pinellas County are a potential raw material for lightweight aggregate production. The clay has good bloating characteristics across an acceptable temperature range with a resultant aggregate density of less than 1.00 specific gravity. The clays from Charlotte County have poorer natural bloating characteristics but might well be used after treatment or with additives. The economic potential and locations of both deposits emphasize the need for locating similar clay resources in the state that might have economic potential so that land use planning and subsequent urbanization will not prohibit their development.

INTRODUCTION During the last decade, several studies in France (e.g., Perraud et al. , 1970; Chameaud et al., 1974, 1979 and 1980) and the United States (e.g., Stuart et al., 1978; Cross et al., 1978, 1980 and 1981) have demonstrated the systematic production of emphysema, fibrosis and tumors in the lungs of animals exposed to radon daughters alone or to mixtures of uranium-mine air contaminants. The studies in beagle dogs have been particularly interesting because of the uncertain etiology of the disease and the (apparently) diverse results of the studies at the University of Rochester and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). In the Rochester studies, reported by Morken (1973), beagle dogs were exposed to "normal" room air dust loads and radon daughters from 200 to 10,000 WLM*, delivered in 1 to 50 days (rate of delivery, about 200 WLM per day of exposure). Histological examination of tissues was conducted at 1, 2 and 3 years after exposure for all exposure levels. No cancers were noted in these dogs that received estimated alveolar doses of 34 to 1700 rad (0.34 to 17 Gy). Pathologic changes were found only in the alveolar and bronchiolar regions of the lung. These changes were small, subtle, variable, and widely separated, involving only a very small fraction of lung tissue. Lesions appeared as focal thickening of alveolar septa, with some metaplasia of alveolar cells and some hyperplasia of bronchial epithelium. In the PNL experiments reported by Cross et al. (1978), beagle dogs were exposed in lifespan studies to mixtures of radon daughters (rate of delivery, about 14 WLM per day of exposure), uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. One group of dogs was exposed to cigarette smoke alone. Except in control and smoke-only groups, the dogs died within 4' years of the first radon daughter exposure, or were killed when death appeared imminent because of pulmonary insufficiency (characterized by rapid, shallow breathing). Control and smoke-only animals were killed at periods corresponding to highmortality periods in the groups exposed to radon daughters and mixtures of uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. Emphysema and fibrosis were much more prevalent and severe in the lungs of dogs exposed to the mixtures. These dogs also had adenomatous lesions, which progressed to squamous metaplasia of alveolar epithelium, epidermoid carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Pathologic changes in the upper airways of these dogs were most prominent in the nasal mucosa, and included a few squamous carcinomas in the nasal cavity. Respiratory tract neoplasia was noted after ~4 years exposure and at cumulative exposures exceeding approximately 12,000 WLM. Apart from differences in associated carrier aerosol (room air dust vs. uranium ore dust) and radon-daughter exposure rate (200 WLM/day, shortduration exposure vs. 14 WLM/day, long-duration exposure), the most obvious difference in the Rochester and PNL studies was the observation time following exposure (3 years maximum vs. >4 years). Although neoplasia may not have been observed in the Rochester animals because of the earlier termination of the experiments, it is surprising that other lesions, such as prominent fibrosis and emphysema, were not reported. A follow-up study (reported here) is currently in progress at PNL to determine the pathogenic role of uranium ore dust alone and, in particular, to clarify the role of the ore dust in the production of the massive pulmonary fibrosis observed in the earlier study. Pulmonary function testing (a recently acquired capability) was included in the follow-up study as an indicator of progressive change in lung tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chronic (4 hr/day, 5 days/week) exposures began when the dogs were about 2 1/2 years old. Two identical exposure chambers provided space for simultaneous, head-only exposure of 24 dogs to ~l5 mg/m3 carnotite uranium ore dust. An aerosol diffusion system was incorporated in each chamber in order to channel fresh aerosol past each dog's head; uranium ore dust was added to the inlet room air with Wright Dust Feed Mechanisms* (WDFM). Uranium ore dust and condensation nuclei concentrations were measured daily; chamber aerosols were monitored occasionally for particle-size distributions as described for previous hamster experiments (Cross et al., 1981). INTRODUCTION The attempt to interprete lung cancer incidence caused by inhaled radon decay products in items of radiation dose raises the question of the relevant dose. The various dosimetric approaches published by now are characterized by an increasing complexity in the structure of the models used. Ranging from organ doses to microdosimetric specific energy distributions in the cells at risk, a significant trend from the macroscopic to the microscopic scale can be observed. Since tumors originate preferentially in the basal cells of the lobar and segmental bronchial epithelium, these cells are regarded as the critical target for inhalation carcinogenesis. The evaluation of basal cell doses is, therefore, the main objective of lung dose assessments. Various dosimetric models have been published in the past (Altshuler, Nelson and Kuschner, 1964; Haque and Collinson, 1967; Harley and Pasternack, 1972; Hofmann, Steinhäusler and Pohl, 1979, 1980; Jacobi, 1964; Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James , Greenhalge and Birchall, 1980). Due to incertainties of physical and biological parameters involved and the application of different anatomical and physiological models the claculated doses are varying up to one order of mangitude. Independent of the choice of these dosimetric models applied to the calculation of lung doses, deposition, clearance and resulting dose are affected essentially by the properties of the inhaled aerosol as well as by personal characteristics. Both the properties of the exposed individual as well as of the inhaled environmental atmosphere have to be considered in radiation protection. It is the main objective of this paper to illustrate the influence of both parameter sets on basal cell doses by varying the above parameters. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Though it might be more convenient for radiation protection calculations, the biological "man" cannot be represented by a uniform standard man. In Tab. 1 these personal characteristics which cause the variability of man are listed together with the region of their effectiveness. In the following the influence of these parameters will be discussed with regard to lung dose assessments. Besides these factors the great biological variability of all anatomical and physiological parameters involved as well as pathological alterations due to lung diseases cause additional variations in lung dosimetry. [ ] Age Age can be considered as the most important personal factor influencing the anatomical structure of the lung between birth and about 15 years of life. This period is characterized not only by an enlargement of already existing respiratory units but also by structural changes. Besides these anatomical alterations deposition is strongly dependent also on respiration parameters, such as tidal volume (TV) and respiratory frequency (RF). Whereas RF decreases with progressing age in an exponential manner, TV increases significantly resulting finally in a growth of the respiratory minute volume (RMV). Also mucus clearance in the infant might be more effective than in the adult, though no reliable experimental data are available. Superposing all these age-dependent changes mean basal cell doses are higher for children by about a factor of 2 than for adults living in the same radioactive environment (Hofmann, 1981). In the adult the following alterations of respiration standards with age are reported: total lung capacity diminishes with age, functional residual capacity is unchanged or increases with age and the dead space rises slightly with age (ICRP, 1975). The influence of these lung capacities on deposition, however, can be regarded as insignificant. Due to the ageing process mucus velocities my be considerably smaller in older people. This effect can also be superposed by the simultaneous influence of ciliatoxic effects of cigarette smoke and air pollutants or other bronchial diseases. Since the lower age limit for occupational exposure is about 18 years, age can be disregarded in the uranium mining industry for the determination of radiation doses, though lung cancer induction is significantly dependent on age.

There is currently some pessimism over mixing of net-acid-neutralizing (NAN) and net-acid-generating (NAG) rock to obtain indefinite near-neutral seepage from mined-rock piles. This is due in large part to the lack of well- documented, successful cases of blending and layering, and to the knowledge of unsuccessful attempts. Past work often defined a potentially successful mix in terms of the ratio of net-acid-neutralizing rock to net-acid-generating rock. For example, one case study indicated the bulk pile-wide ratio was approximately 3: 1. Since this exceeded a common ratio used in acid-base accounting, no acidic drainage was predicted. However, acidic drainage appeared within two years. A large part of the ambiguity in mixing arises from attempts to predict success based on a ratio. This paper looks in detail at simple discrete-zone mixing, where at least one truckload of NAG rock is placed in a particular location with no further rehandling or dozing. The lack of acidic drainage in this scenario is dependent on the intervening distance between the discrete NAG zones, along flowpaths occupied by NAN rock. Calculations show that the bulk mixing ratio of a mined-rock pile is not an accurate indication of whether near-neutral drainage can be maintained. For example, a pile with a bulk ratio around 300: 1 could still release some acidic drainage. Calculations also show that the minimum separation distance of the NAG zones (L) can be so great, even with typical NAG and NAN rock, that the mixed pile could safely contain only a few percent of NAG rock, which would not be sufficient for many minesites with NAG rock. The comparison to a more elaborate, computer-based statistical model shows that the simple discrete-zone approach will provide a reliable yes-no indication of whether any acidic drainage will leave a pile. However, predictions of whether combined downstream drainages will be acidic depend on numerous site-specific physical and geochemical factors within and below a pile that cannot be modelled in a general way, like the number of flowpaths and the nature of their intersections.

A multielement extraction system is being used successfully to provide essentially interference-free geochemical analyses to aid in gold exploration. The Methyl isobutyl ketone-Amine synerGistic Iodide Complex (MAGIC) extraction system separates Ag, As, Au, Bi, Cd, Cu, Ga, Hg, In, Mo, Pb, Pd, Pt, Sb, Se, Sn, Te, T1, and Zn from interfering geological matrices. Quantitative extraction of these elements is accomplished over a broad range of acid normality, making it possible to economically determine all 19 elements from a single digestion or leach solution. The resulting organic extracts are amenable to analysis by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). For many years the principal shortcoming of ICP-AES was the complex spectral and stray-light interferences that were caused by the extreme variability of components such as Fe. Na, and Ca in common geological matrices. The MAGIC extraction allows determination of the extracted elements with enhanced sensitivity, from a virtually uniform matrix, by ICP-AES and FAAS. Because of its simultaneous multichannel capabilities, ICP-AES is the ideal instrumental technique for determining these 19 extracted elements. Ultratrace (sub-part-per-billion) determinations of Au and many of the other extracted elements can be made by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS), following back stripping of the extracts. The combination of the extraction followed by stripping of the organic phase eliminates 99.999% of potential interferences for Au. Gold determination by GFAAS from these extracts under the specified conditions yields a fourfold improvement in sensitivity over conventional GFAAS methods. This sensitivity enhancement and the interference-free matrix allow highly reliable determinations well into the parts-per-trillion range.

Acidophilic bacteria are well known for their role in accelerating the oxidative dissolution of sulfide minds, such as pyrite. Other acidophiles, however, are able to catalyze dissimilatory reductive reactions. Bacteria that reduce ferric iron to ferrous, and sulfate to sulfide, were isolated from ARD-impacted environments and immobilised onto porous beads made of recycled glass. Column bioreactors containing colonized beads were constructed and peacolated with synthetic and actual ARD, and evaluated for their capacities to promote iron or sulfate reduction, and pH amelioration. Iron reduction did not require strictly anoxic conditions in bioreactors, and rates of up to 800 mg Fe3+ reduced/(l*day) were achieved, with a conversion efficiency of up to 98%. Using mixed populations of acidophilic fungi and iron-reducing bacteria, the bioreactors were capable of promoting iron reduction using paper pulp as sole carbon and energy source. Reduction of sulfate in pack bed bioreactors was observed with acidic wastewaters of pH 3 and above, though average rates of 300 mg sulfate reduced/(l*/day) were less than those recorded for circum-neutral pH systems. Bioremediation of ferric iron-rich ARD was assessed using coupled iron-reducing and sulfate reducing bioreactors.

SALA MAGNETICS, INC. is now operating a 15 tph continuous high gradient magnetic separator, the SALA-HGMS® Mark III Carousel, as part of a complete mineral processing pilot plant installed at Sala's Cambridge headquarters. The Mark III can generate a maximum magnetic field of 18 kG making it possible to process even weakly magnetic, finely ground ores and ore tailings on a continuous basis at the performance level achieved in Sala's cyclic high gradient magnetic separators. Test results on iron ores, clay, and decoppering of molybdenum concentrate will be discussed. Bench scale tests have been performed on all of these materials using the SALA-HGMS® Model 10-15-20 Cyclic Magnetic Separator. A direct correlation may be made between cyclic and carousel results. Sala's Mark III Carousel high gradient magnetic separator is designed to permit scale-up to machines capable of processing two hundred (200) tons of ore per hour and more.

This paper describes the geology and geotechnics associated with construction of the Thames Tunnel, part of the UK’s Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). The 2.5km long twin tunnels run beneath the river Thames at depths of up to 40m and are currently under construction. They pass through varying geology comprising alluvium, terrace gravels and chalk with flints and are currently being bored using Herrenknecht mixshield slurry tunnel boring machines (TBM’s). This paper outlines the lithology and engineering properties of each geological formation and describes the geotechnical processes, potential hazards and difficulties experienced in the works. A summary is given into the extent of the investigative work in terms of route selection, tunnel design, TBM optimisation and further details are provided on the geotechnical aspects associated with the construction of the tunnel approach structures and the tunnels.

Managing a mine or mineral processing operation in today's environment presents many unique challenges to mining companies. In recent years, headlines around the world have publicized major incidents such as those associated with the Marcopper Mine in the Philippines, the cyanide release in Guyana from the Omai gold mine and numerous other mishaps associated with mining. These notable upsets were due to engineered system failures, either during normal operations or as a result of uncontrollable events. There fore, many mining firms are attempting to assess their overall risks and establish some priority for expenditure of limited operational and environmental budgets. Failure of an engineered component can have dire operational consequences that affect profitability until repair or replacement can be completed. In addition, there may be significant environmental consequences associated with the engineered system failure. This, too, may affect profitability for an extended time or even the viability of an operation. An engineered risk assessment (ERA) can support a mining company's efforts to cost effectively manage environmental risks associated with the operation of its facilities. The ERA approach also provides information about the current condition of engineered systems. This ERA approach provides a systematic review of the risks of an engineered system failure and the possible associated environmental consequences at mining company facilities. This approach has been successfully applied to many industries and types of engineered systems (Barneich et al, 1996; Whitman, 1984; Power and Tomkins, 1974; Keeney, Nair, and Kulkarni, 1979). This approach evaluates all mining and mineral processing facilities located at a single site and compares them with similar facilities located at multiple mine sites. The ERA approach has been applied to a mining, milling, smelting, leaching and refining operations. These assessments can be part of a comprehensive environmental program to aid in the recognition and cost effective management of the potential environmental risks associated with the operation of facilities. The United States Cement, along with other industries, is being devastated by an unprecedented penetration of domestic markets by imported products. The overriding questions are: 1. Have foreign manufacturers improved their processes to an extent they can outperform U.S. producers in their home markets? 2. Is it gross inefficiency on the part of the U.S. producers that is allowing foreign producers to be capable of replacing a local U.S. producer in his normal home market? 3. Is there a combination of the first two questions that economically justifies this type of market overrun? The answer is a simple NO!. In a fair trade market atmosphere, U.S. producers are definitely competitive.

Tripoli is a naturally occurring, finely divided form of silica found chiefly in midwestern and southeastern states and used commercially in fillers and abrasives. The name comes from the location of a silica deposit in North Africa and was applied in the latter part of the 19th century to similar material near Seneca, Missouri. Subsequently, the North African material was found to be diatomite, composed of siliceous skeletons of microscopic marine plants called diatoms, and the material's name was changed to tripolite. The name, tripoli, remained with the Missouri silica, which is inorganic in origin, and tripoli is now used to designate all naturally occurring silica that is similar in characteristics and origin to the Missouri material. Just to confuse things further, in commercial trade tripoli usually designates silica from the Missouri-Oklahoma field, whereas silica from southern Illinois, the other major producing area, is called amorphous silica. Each term, however, may be used commercially for any material, regardless of place of origin that has the characteristics or uses ascribed to material from either major producing area. For example, Engineering and Mining Journal routinely lists under "tripoli," prices "f.o.b. Elco, I11." and "f.o.b. Seneca, Mo. and Rogers, Ark.", and under "silica, amorphous," prices "f.o.b. I11 and "f.o.b. Dierks, Ark." "Soft silica" is another term that has been applied to tripoli from Illinois, west central Arkansas, and Tennessee, presumably to distinguish it from the more compact Missouri material. It has also been used in the ceramic trade to distinguish tripoli from "hard" silica, or silica flour, which is produced by pulverizing silica sand. Tripoli is produced mainly in extreme southwestern Illinois, in the Missouri-Oklahoma district in Newton County, Missouri, and Ottawa County, Oklahoma; and in the novaculite belt of west central Arkansas. Some tripoli is produced for local and specialized uses near Austin, Texas.

Rare earth elements are essential for modern life products and green technologies. Recent supply constraints have boosted the development of rare earth projects after the price peak of 2011. The feasibility of a project depends on the definition of a processing route, which in turn depends primarily on the rare earth mineral, with monazite and bastnaesite representing the two most relevant minerals. Monazite-type ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium and phosphates, and may also contain prohibitive levels of radioactive thorium in its composition. Based on thermodynamic analysis, the present work discusses the fundamentals of a selective process route for rare earth extraction from monazite ores with high iron content. This process involves sulfation by means of concentrated sulfuric acid and roasting at a high temperature. The route yields high rare earth extraction with low iron and thorium extraction and low acid consumption. Rare earth extractions as high as 80 percent were achieved, while iron and thorium extractions were lower than 1 percent, and acid consumption was lower than 0.34 kg of sulfuric acid per kg of ore. The operational window was compared to the one predicted by thermodynamic modeling, with 700 °C representing the optimal roasting temperature.

The kinetics of froth flotation and the three-phase contact (TPC) parameters are studied at temperatures varying from 20°C to 40°C. The material floated consists of glass spheres and a quartz particles with various diameters. Dodecylamine hydrocloride (DDAHCI) is used as a collector. The equilibrium three-phase contact angle is measured with a microscope technique using the modified Mingins-Scheludko method. Using a Wilhelmy method, the temperature effect on the surface tension of the DDAHCI solution is determined. The formation of the thin film on a polished plate of vitreous silica and the expansion of TPC is monitored by means of a metallographic microscope and recorded on a attached camera at different temperatures. The experimental data show an intensification of the flotation kinetics at 30 and 40°C in the case of small particles. Such an intensification is not observed with the larger particles. The cause for intensification of the flotation kinetics is sought for in the dependence of the TPC rate of expansion and induction time on temperature.

2.1 INTRODUCTION When total extraction of an opening of sufficient size is reached in a horizontal coal seam, the roof strata in the overburden deform continuously to reach a new equilibrium condition. The severity of deformation decreases upward toward the surface. As the downward saggings of the strata propagate and reach the surface, there will be a depression zone on the surface directly above, but extending beyond the edges of the underground opening. This is the surface subsidence basin or surface subsidence trough. The surface subsidence basin is circular in plan view, if the coal seam is horizontal and the mined-out opening is square in shape. But it is rectangular with rounded corners or elliptical if the coal seam is horizontal and the mined-out opening is a long- and thin rectangle or a short-rectangular, respectively (Fig. 2.1). Most underground openings (e.g., longwall panel) assume rectangular shape when total extraction has been completed. Theoretically the edges of the subsidence basin are the points of zero subsidence. But it is difficult to exactly locate the points of zero subsidence. Therefore in practice the points with vertical subsidence of 0.4 in. (10 mm) are used. The final subsidence basin is that which exists long after the mining has been completed, because its magnitude and shape are quite different from the dynamic subsidence basin formed while the face is moving. 2.2 CHARACTERISTICS AND TYPES OF DEFORMATION IN THE FINAL SUBSIDENCE BASIN For a horizontal coal seam, every point in the subsidence basin moves toward the center of the basin. Subsidence is maximum at the center of the basin. Any cross-section that passes through the point of maximum subsidence and either parallel to AB or CD line (Fig. 2.1) is a major cross-section along which principal directions of surface movements occur. However among those infinite numbers of major cross-sections, two specific ones are of special significance, not only because the magnitudes of surface movements are the largest, but also because they are the most easily identifiable directions, i.e., one that is parallel to the faceline at the center of the basin (CD in Fig. 2.1) and' the other is that perpendicular to the faceline but parallel to the diction of face advance (AB in Fig. 2.1). Nearly all the subsidence data obtained in the US have been derived from these two cross-sections, although some cross- sections parallel to CD but near the edges of the panel have also been included. In addition to moving horizontally toward the center of the basin, every point in the basin also subsides vertically. The magnitude of subsidence increases toward the center of the basin. Therefore surface subsidence is a three-dimensional problem and should be treated so in all cases. On all the major cross-sections, only principal subsidence and principal displacement occur. Since subsidence and displacement vary continuously in every major cross-section, three additional deformation components are de- rived, i.e., slope, curvature, and strain. On all other non-major cross-sections on the other hand the five components are accompanied by two additional components, i.e., twisting and shear strain. The seven components of the surface movement are defined as follows (Fig. 2.2): 1. Subsidence, S. On any cross-section, the vertical component of the surface movement vector is called surface subsidence. It generally points downward. But sometimes it points upward in areas ahead of the faceline or beyond the edges of the opening. In such cases it is a surface heave which is usually less than 6 in. 2. Displacement, U. On any cross-section, the horizontal component of the surface movement vector is called surface horizontal displacement. It generally points toward the center of the subsidence basin. But in steep terrain, it moves along the downdip direction 3. Slope, i. On any cross-section, the difference in surface subsidence between the two end points of a line section divided by the horizontal distance between the two points is called the surface slope of the section. 4. Curvature, K. On any cross-section, the difference in surface slope between two adjacent line sections divided by the average length of the two line sections is called the surface curvature of those two line sections. There are two types of curvature: con- vex or positive curvature and concave or negative curvature. 5. Horizontal strain, e. On any cross-section, the difference in horizontal displacement between any two points divided by the distance between the two points is called horizontal strain. If the distance between the two points is lengthening, it is tensile strain with positive sign. Conversely, if it is shortening, it is compressive strain with negative sign 6. Twisting, T. On the surface of the subsidence basin, the difference in slope between two parallel line sections divided by the distance between the two line sections is called twisting. 7. Shear strain, y. Shear strain is the changes in internal angles of a square on the surface of the subsidence basin or on any major cross-section. It is the summation of the differences in incremental (or decremental) lengths between the two opposite sides divided by the original distance between the two opposite sides. More precisely, the surface deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain, curvature, twisting and shear) are defined by derivatives of surface movement components. For simplicity, the x- and y-axes of the cartesian coordinate system are set to be parallel and perpendicular to the cross-section of interest, respectively. In such a coordinate system, slope and curvature along x direction are the first and the second derivatives of the vertical components (S) of surface movement with respect to x, respectively, or i, = ds/dx and kx = d2s/dx2. Horizontal strain along x direction is the first derivative of the component along x direction of the horizontal displacement,

Offshore oil and gas production operations have moved from water depths of about 50 feet in 1948 to the present record depth of 340 feet. Although mobile drilling rigs are widely used for exploratory drilling, most development drilling and production operations have been conducted above water from the decks of fixed, bottom-founded platforms. Increasing water depths have caused problems associated with design and construction of these platforms and with laying of pipelines, but not so much with other activities. After a platform is installed, drilling, production, and maintenance operations are similar to those onshore and are relatively unaffected by water depth. Events of 1968 indicate that offshore production may soon extend into much deeper water. These events include leasing of Santa Barbara Channel acreage in water depths over 1500 feet, and the successful drilling of a wildcat well in 1300 feet. Designs have been developed for platforms suitable for installation in water over 600 feet deep, and studies suggest they may be used in some areas to water depths of 800 to 1000 feet. Buoyant towers can probably support above-surface platforms in water 1000 feet and deeper. Although the cost of either of these platforms will be high, once installed they will permit relatively low-cost development drilling and production operations compared with estimates for subsea production systems. In some cases, savings in development drilling costs alone could pay out the platform investment.
