Proposals have been made by two organizations, the International Standards Organization (150) and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for a revised respirable dust criteria and criteria for thoracic and inspirable dust. These criteria yield different results than criteria based on lung deposition patterns in assessing the hazards due to dust exposure. Since these differences are a function of the size distribution of the dust an analysis of dust size distributions from various mining operations was performed to determine the amount of difference that could occur. The dust size distributions available for this analysis were taken from U.S. coal mines and from Chinese metal mines. The mass of mechanically generated dust that will deposit in the alveoli was found to be in direct proportion to the ISO/ACGIH criteria estimates in the mines studied. Therefore, respirable dust estimates for substances such as coal and silica are not a problem. Estimates of exposure to diesel exhaust in these mines, however, were not always in the same proportion to the estimated alveolar deposition. Also, concern with an excess of bronchitis among miners may not be adequately addressed by the use of samplers conforming to the ISO and ACGIH criteria. The cascade impactors used to acquire the data for this analysis require four to eight substrates per sampler. For daily dust exposure assessment this method is cumbersome and time consuming. Therefore, two new samplers have been designed to meet the need for determination of deposited dust mass. These samplers follow the lung deposition curve rather than the penetration curves proposed by the ACGIH and ISO and require analysis of only two substrates per sample.

Few members of the general public have a clear understanding of mineral resources. Most people do not know how minerals are mined or why they must be extracted from many diverse locations. Many people acquire knowledge of mineral development from mass media sources with incomplete details or obvious anti-mining bias. The California Mineral Education Foundation was formed in 1991 to provide educational opportunities for the public and industry. There have been major changes in earth science teaching requirements for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) curricula since the passage of California Senate Bill 813 in 1983. Model graduation standards, curriculum standards and the state science framework mandate substantial coverage of geoscience topics. The California State Commission on Teacher Credentialing has completed changes in multiple subject and single subject science credentials which will require more geoscience preparation for all teachers. The need for pre-service and in-service education in geoscience is at an all time high. Teachers must have continuing education to maintain their credentials and many are now seeking information in geoscience. The California Mineral Education Foundation designed and conducted the California Mineral Education Conferences held in August 1991 and 1992. The conferences involved lectures and field trips on mining geology, environmental problems and political concerns. Master teachers were employed to share how they get across mineral resource concepts in the classroom. Ninety-six percent of the participants stated that they had changed to a more positive perception of mining after taking the three day course.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Caro's Acid (H2so5) were used to treat cyanide containjng effluents. Significant reagent savings were achieved by using Caro's Acid. Weak Acid Dissociable (W.A.D.) cyanides were removed at near stoichiometric levels of Caro's Acid. Hydrogen Peroxide showed poorer efficiency in the presence of W.A.D. cyanide complexes, resulting in higher consumption rates. Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and :ability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

Australia has led the world in bauxite production since 1976, and only the Republic of Guinea has larger bauxite resources. India has a small integrated aluminum industry, and deposits containing more than 1 Gt (billion metric tons) of bauxite were discovered in the 1970's. The Peoples Republic of China has large bauxite resources scattered in several regions, but it is a monohydrate type that is difficult to process for aluminum. Indonesia and Malaysia both have long histories of bauxite mining, and both have limited resources of high-grade bauxite. Districts containing bauxite resources in the 10 Mt to 150 Mt (million metric tons) range are scattered in countries along the eastern rim of the Pacific Ocean, on islands in this ocean, and on the western and northern rims of the Indian Ocean.

The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.

Three coal samples, selected out of eight with well characterized surface properties, were used in flocculation tests and synthetic mixture of coal and silica was used in the selective flocculation experiments. Coal wettability and flocculant type were found to have a strong effect on the flocculation results.

Strain burst can occur in underground hard rock excavation when the in-situ stresses are high enough. The prerequisite for rock burst is that the total energy released from the rock mass is higher than the energy needed for rock fracture. The total released energy is contributed by both the burst rock and the surrounding rock. The part of the energy from the burst rock is constant per unit volume of the rock, but the part from the surrounding rock is associated with the burst volume. A greater amount of energy will be released from the surrounding rock in the case of a larger volume of burst rock. The postulation for the energy conversion in strain burst is verified through a FLAC3D model in the paper. It is assumed that the strain burst occurs in a circular tunnel that is located in the hydrostatically loaded rock mass in the model. Six pairs of notches with different depths are created in the opposite walls of the tunnel to simulate the bursts. The energies released from the notch rocks and from the surrounding rock are calculated during the burst. The simulation results show that the percentage of the energy released from the surrounding rock in the total released energy increases with the notch depth. The numerical modelling confirms the postulation that the surrounding rock contributes more energy than the burst rock itself in large-scale strain bursts

Batch leaching of Ohio #1, Ohio #4A and Ohio #5 coals was conducted with the thermophilic. sulfur, oxidizing microorganism: Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. Four different size fractions of each coal, with median sizes of 508, 200, 90, and 49 microns, were subjected for 10 days to leaching in a 5% coal-water slurry at 72°C and a pH of 2. Release rates and extent of sulfate and iron I1 and I11 ions from the coals during the leaching process and distribution of sulfur forms (sulfate, pyritic and organic) in the coal samples before and after treatment were determined. Data indicated that Ohio #1 coal, with an initial sulfur content of 0.6%, showed no significant changes with leaching in total sulfur content or forms of sulfur. The Ohio #4A coal, with initial total sulfur content near 5%, yielded product, for sizes below 200 microns with 90% reduction of pyritic sulfur while the extent of organic sulfur removal varied with coal particle size. Results similar to those for Ohio #4A were observed on the Ohio #5 coal, which had an initial total sulfur content of 3% and a final sulfur content near 1%. The findings were interpreted in terms of basic biological, chemical and physical mechanisms.

The 79th Street Water Tunnel Extension Project was initially designed by the City of Chicago, Department of Public Works, to increase the capacity of the City’s south side water distribution system. MWH preformed a design review, prepared the final design and provided construction management for the City of Chicago Department of Water. Construction commenced in September 1995 and was completed in October 1999. The Project connected two existing water tunnels with a new 5.8 km (19,044 ft.) long, 4.9 m (16.08 ft.) finished diameter concrete lined rock tunnel utilizing TBM, drill-blast and mechanical hoe-ramming methods. In addition, approximately 61 meters(200 feet) of concrete lined variable cross section tunnel, a new gate shaft and a temporary construction shaft were constructed. This paper describes the construction of these features and the geological conditions encountered.

Preconcentration of Porgera ore results in high recoveries of gold into gravity and flotation concentrates. The bulk of the gold is contained in auriferous pyrite flotation concentrate and is not readily recoverable by direct cyanidation. Oxidation in autoclaves at high pressure and temperature produces a residue that contains the gold in recoverable form. Pilot plant treatment of the autoclave residue is described, through washing and jarosite decomposition stages, to cyanide leaching and recovery of gold and silver by carbon-in-pulp techniques. The concern associated with disposal of plant effluents are also addressed.

Mill #4 processes mildly refractory ore from Carlin Trend deposits. Diagnostic analysis of plant operating data was used to generate a mathematical model containing the important parameters influencing gold recovery. The model was used to direct modifications to plant operating practice. The cyanide-dosing strategy was changed to reduce gold losses from preg-robbing and to cut reagent consumption. A finer grind was achieved without capital investment. The density in the carbon-in-leach circuit was lowered, and tighter control was exercised over the plant throughput. These changes resulted in a recovery increase of at least 2%, worth $111,000/month at $300/oz ($9.64/g) gold, and concomitant reagent cost savings of $55,000/ month.

INTRODUCTION Radon-222 is an inert, radioactive gas formed by the radioactive decay of radium-226, a long-lived member of the uranium-238 decay chain. Radium is present in varying amounts in virtually all soils and, on the average, about 36,000 pCi (1330 Bq) of radon per square meter of soil diffuse into the atmosphere each day (UN 1977). Radon decays with a half-life of 3.6 days through four short-lived daughters to lead210 and it is these short-lived daughters[ [Ra A, (218Po, t, = 3.0 min) , Ra B, (214 Pb, t;, = 27 min), Ra C, (214Bi, t] = 20 min) and Ra C1 (214Po, t] = 2.5 x 10-6 min)] ]which cause the major health hazard associated with radon (Bale 1951). Atoms of these daughters, either unattached or attached to the ever-present particles in air, are deposited on the surfaces of the respiratory tract; alpha particles emitted in their decay can result in large doses to the cells of the bronchial epithelium lining the respiratory tract. These daughters will be present in air in varying relative concentrations depending on the "age" of the air (time since radon emanated into it) and on the amount of mixing of radon and radon daughter contaminated air with clean air. [The practical unit developed to quantify the amount of radon daughters in air is the Working Level (WL). This unit was historically related to the equilibrium concentration of 100 pCi (3.7 Bq) of the short-lived daughters of radon in one liter of air (cf. Holaday 1969) and is defined as any mixture of the short-lived daughters in a liter of air that have a-potential alpha energy of 1.3 x 105 Mev (2.08 x 10-5J) in their decay to lead-210. The working level month (WLM) was developed along with the WL, and was defined as an exposure to one WL for a working month (170 h). This is equivalent to 2.2 x 107 MeV•h•L-1 (3.54 x 10-3 J.h.m-3). If the average breathing rate is taken as 1.2 m3.h•1 (ICRP 1975), then one WLM is equivalent to inhalation of 4.24 mJ of potential alpha energy.] It is now generally agreed that the inhalation of radon daughters is the major potential radiation hazard in uranium mining, and contributes a substantial fraction to the natural radiation exposure of the general population due to the accumulation of radon and radon daughters from natural sources in buildings. Radon daughter concentrations in modern mines are controlled by ventilation, and by blocking off old working areas (cf. Simpson, 1959). However, before the hazard from radon daughters was recognized, considerably higher concentrations of radon daughters were present in some uranium and non-uranium mines. These high radon daughter concentrations resulted in an increase in lung cancers in the mining population, and it is these results that are our main source of information on the risk of inhaling radon daughters. HISTORICAL REVIEW Many excellent reviews of the history of understanding the health effects of inhalation of radon daughters are available (see, for example, Hueper 1942, Lorenz 1944, Sikl 1950, Stewart 1964, Holaday 1969, Lundin 1971, Cross 1979) but a brief summary of some of the highlights in this area may be of interest. [a] 1556: Agricola describes an unusual and fatal chest disease occurring among underground miners in the region of Schneeberg and Joachimsthal (Jachymov) in the Erz mountains in Central Europe. (It is of some historical interest to note that Agricola's book was translated from Latin into English by a mining engineer and his wife; the engineer later became President of the U.S.A.) [b] 1879: Haerting and Hesse indicated that the majority of deaths among Schneeberg miners were due to lung cancer; the lung cancers in these miners (who were incidentally not cigarette smokers) were observed twenty to fifty years after they began working in the mines. [c] 1896: Discovery of natural radioactivity by Becquerel, followed by discovery of radon by Dorn in 1900. [d] 1924: Ludewig and Lorenser report high concentrations (400 - 15000 pCi or 15 - 570 Bq per liter) of radon in the air in the Schneeberg mines and suggest that radon could be responsible for the high rate of lung cancer among miners. However, the reason why radon should cause lung cancer specifically was still not really understood up to twenty years later (Lorenz 1944). High concentrations of radon in the air in the Joachimsthal mines were reported by Behounek in 1927 and a high incidence of lung cancer among Joachimsthal miners (similar to that among miners at Schneeberg, which is only some 30 km distant but in a different political district) was noted at about the same time (Sikl 1930; cf. Sikl 1950). It is estimated that about half of the Joachimsthal miners died from lung cancer and about half from silicosis and tuberculosis (Sikl 1950). [e] 1930's and 1940's: Radioactive ores are deliberately mined in the U.S.A., Canada and other countries primarily as a source of radium for medical purposes and for luminescent dials; other radioactive ores are mined as a source of several non-radioactive minerals, while extensive uranium mining did not begin until the late 1940's. [f] 1940: Based on crude epidemiology and dose calculations, Evans and Goodman propose 10 pCi L-1 as a maximum permissible concentration of radon in continued human exposure. This is the first known recommended maximum permissible concentration for radon. This recommendation was adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1941 and reconfirmed in 1953. INTRODUCTION Since the first introduction of explosives into mining operations, safety considerations have prohibited the use of machinery in association with the explosives. Only within the last 25 years has this situation changed appre¬ciably; the closest thing to "machinery" used by a powderman in the "old days" was his wooden tamping stick. With the blackpowder and dynamite used during the first 150 or so years of mining blasts, substituting a drill steel or a metal "spoon" invited serious disaster. With the advent of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives (1950s) and water-gel explosives (1970s) for underground blasting, machinery started to play a large part in blasting procedures. The lower sensitivity of ANFO and water gels allows these prod¬ucts to be loaded in a variety of safe ways. Not only has this meant cost savings in labor and blasting materials, but it has also resulted in whole new mining concepts where the limitations of dynamite previously made those concepts uneconomical, impossible, or excessively risky. Increasingly (totally for some mines), the traditional tamping stick has given way to a variety of pneumatic machines for loading explosives and blasting agents. The resulting blasting operations have become safer, more efficient, less uncomfortable for personnel, and a major step forward in mining technology. ANFO LOADING EQUIPMENT Three basic types of loaders are used for ANFO explosives, these being the pressure-vessel loaders, Venturi loaders, and combination loaders. Pressure-Vessel ANFO Loaders ANFO consists of prilled ammonium nitrate (porous pellets I to 2 mm in diam) and fuel oil in the appro¬priate 94 to 6% blend. The material is fairly dry, pourable, and easily conveyed by an air stream. One device or system for handling (hole loading) ANFO is the pressure-vessel loader. ANFO is dumped into the vessel or "pot," and the vessel then is pres¬surized. The ANFO is conveyed out of the bottom of the vessel into a semiconductive hose that has been inserted into the blasthole. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical pressure-vessel loader in use. Applications: The use of pressure-vessel loaders is widespread in room-and-pillar mines, including salt, potash, trona, lead, and other rubber-tired mines where the heavy pressure vessels can be mounted on a vehicle for transport from face to face. The vessel often is large enough to hold eight or more 23-kg (50-1b) bags of ANFO, so several faces can be loaded before refilling. An improved mine environment is the single most critical factor affecting the health and safety of workers engaged in underground coal winning. A very important subclassification of this wide field is mine ventilation, which essentially deals with 'mine atmospheric environmental control.' To ensure proper mine atmospheric environmental control, adequate quantities of air must flow through working sections in the mine. In recent years much attention has been paid to the fan and its prime movers, but the efficient use of the fan output in the workings has not received an equal amount of investigation. In mechanically ventilated mines friction losses in main airways often account for 70 to 90 percent of the total pressure loss sustained in the system. Also the leakage losses are a serious detriment to the efficiency of mine ventilation systems. It is not uncommon to loose 60 to 70 percent of the air between the fan and the last open cross-cuts due to leakage directly into the return Proper assessment of these losses in simulating and projecting complex ventilation systems is vital. Network analysis of ventilation systems is not new. Scott and Hinsly (1951) presented the detailed mathematical framework. Since then work has been done in adopting this technique to analog, and within the past few years, to digital computers. Development of computer programs to solve ventilation network problems has been reported in United Kingdom, Japan, U.S.S.R., South Africa, Germany, and the United States. The purpose of these programs is to serve as an experimental mine wherein analysis of proposed alternatives or ventilation planning can be tested. The great power of the computer as a planning tool lies in the ability to input empirical or Projected data into programs with predicting ability. But, however good a computer program is, unless fairly accurate input information is available accurately assessing the engineering factors of the ventilation system, the output will be suspect. Thus, to simulate and project mine ventilation systems, good estimates of leakage and friction factors are important. Yet, relatively little work has been done in the past three decades to determine these more realistically.

This paper presents an outline of several models that have been developed to aid surface mine planners evaluate alternative mining methods and dragline sizes. The models presented belong to a larger group of models that are incorporated in the SEAMPLAN computerized mine and reclamation planning system. SEAMPLAN was developed in the College of Engineering at Montana State University. Initial funding for the development was derived from the USDA Forest Ser- vice and EPA. Enhancements to SEAMPLAN are currently being funded by DOE (Contract DE-AC22-80ET-14173). SEAMPLAN is a comprehensive surface mine and reclamation planning tool that contains a number of major modules: Data Entry and Review, Production Analysis, Reclamation Analysis, and Impact Analysis. The Production Analysis Module contains programs that enable the user to evaluate alternative methods of removing overburden in a surface coal mine and then to assess auxiliary activities required to support the overburden removal operation. A set of these programs addresses the use of draglines for removing overburden. Six basic dragline mining techniques have been modeled. For one-pass dragline operations four methods can be analyzed: (i) simple side cast, (ii) side bench, (iii) extended bench, and (iv) extended bench with side bench. Two methods of two-pass operations are modeled: (i) single dragline, and (ii) tandem draglines.

A Mark IV surface force apparatus (SFA) was used to conduct direct force measurements between mica surfaces in dodecylamine hydrogen chloride collector solutions at varying pH levels. It was found that long-range hydrophobic forces reach a maximum at pH 9.5, which also corresponds to the maxima attained by the contact angle and flotation recovery of quartz. The charge densities are comparable on both mica and quartz surfaces (0.40 to 0.48 nm2), making it possible to draw conclusions on the flotation of quartz from the direct force measurements conducted on mica. Therefore, it may be suggested that, in the pH range of 8.0 to 10.3, the maximum flotation recovery of quartz may be attributed to the appearance of a long-range hydrophobic force, which, in turn, can be related to the formation of a close-packed monolayer (or hemimicelle) in the presence of neutral amines formed as a result of hydrolysis.

Several shale-hosted Pb-Zn-Ag deposits have been discovered in the northwestern Brooks Range, Alaska. Best known among these are the Red Dog, Drenchwater Creek, Lik, Ferric Creek, Hot Dog Creek, and Competition Creek deposits. They occur in a tectonically disturbed sequence of of Mississippian to Triassic shales, argillites, and cherts, and most are spatially associated with volcanic rocks. The sulfides are hosted in shales as disseminations, banded layers, massive lenses, and crosscutting veins. Detailed geologic descriptions of sulfide prospects in the Brooks Range were given by Tailleur (1970), Nokleberg and Winkler (1978), and Plahuta and Robinson (1979). Lange et al. (1980) discussed the formation of the deposits, the nature of the mineralizing solutions, and the temperature of formation on the basis of sulfur isotope studies. More recently, Harrover et al. (1982) detected a correlation between sulfide mineralization and high-temperature formation of charts associated with the sulfides by oxygen Isotope and chert crystallite size determinations.

INTRODUCTION In any mining operation all possible steps should be taken to increase efficiency. One area for improvement is mine planning and design, particularly in the area of equipment selection for room-and-pillar systems. Be- cause of the availability of a wide variety of face machines, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, this choice must be made on the basis of quantitative facts and forecasts related to the mining application. The purpose of this section is to develop and analyze the details of the mining process. Some specific areas studied include the relationship of system design to productivity, suboptimization as a result of equipment changes, and measurement of system performance. The plan of work leading to a quantitative description of these study areas is based on the growing interest in total system design using simulation as an analytical method (Manula, 1963). CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION OPERATIONS FROM ROOM-AND-PILLAR SECTIONS For a given mining method, raw production in a given section of a mine is primarily dependent upon the coal seam thickness, roof and floor conditions, methane emission, the mining methods, and the man-machine element. Average section production varies from 300 to 800 st per shift for conventional and continuous mining in high seams and from less than 100 to 300 st per shift in low seams. Since the reject varies from 0 to 40%, these figures must be decreased by the appropriate percentage to reflect the amount of clean coal mined. Personnel requirements per production section per shift for the various methods are listed in Table 1. Table 1. Production Personnel Method No. Method No. Conventional 12-1 5 Longwall 9-14 Continuous 9-1 2 Shortwall 9-12 MINING VARIABLES To evaluate the constraints and interrelationships for various mining methods, it is necessary to categorize the variables which underlie system production potential. Seven critical independent variables which determine production can be identified and categorized (Suboleski, 1978) : Seam Height The five categories are as follows: less than 36 in.;. 36 to 55 in.; 55 to 100 in.; 100 to 180 in.; and greater than 180 in. Floor Quality Floor quality ranges from : Excellent: Smooth, hard, grades less than 1 to 1 % % , and dry. Good: Smooth, soft but dry, with grades less than 3 % . The floor will deteriorate, but cautious operation can prevent it. There may possibly be heaving at some later time. Fair. Soft and damp. There is occasional interference with equipment operation; requires the use of four-wheel drive shuttle cars; ruts with regular use, and may have adverse grades of 5 to 7%. This may be coupled with slippery bottom and/or occasional steep rolls. Poor: Soft and wet. Requires blocking of the bottom to support equipment. There are frequent steep rolls and grades in excess of 7%. Roof Quality Roof quality ranges from : Excellent: Men are able to work under the unsupported top during the initial production cycle if legally permitted. Good: The roof is bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern with short bolts (442 in.) or <seam height if the seam >42 in., or requires posting with no bolts on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern. There are no falls. Average: The roof is normally bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern, but with long bolts (>seam height or >6 ft.). There are infrequent minor falls or there may be an excellent roof which is difficult to drill. Fair: This type often requires spot bolting in addition to the regular pattern or bolting with planks. The roof conditions require shorter than planned cuts, or narrow cuts. Poor: This type requires bolts plus crossbars and posts, or installation of yielding supports or truss-type support. It is almost certain to fall if this is not done.
