This paper describes a process for separating non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper and zinc, from other residential and industrial waste by means of permanent magnets. Although the separator may be used in the recovery of non-ferrous metals from auto scrap, most of the testing to date has been aimed at recovery of non-ferrous metals from municipal solid waste, especially recovery of aluminum from the heavy fraction of a resource recovery plant. In most resource recovery plants the incoming solid waste material is first shredded and then air classified into a light and a heavy fraction. The light fraction which contains mostly paper, cardboard, etc., can be used either as a fuel for power generation or in the production of new paper products. The heavy fraction which remains consists mostly of glass, ceramics, wood, ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. The ferrous metals may be removed from the heavy fraction by conventional magnetic separators. After primary shredding, most of the glass and ceramic is fine in size and may be screened away leaving a residue of wood, cardboard, and non-ferrous metals. This residual heavy fraction is the input material for the separator described in the present paper.

Boyles Bros. Drilling Co. and Gibbons and Reed Company, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, have successfully combined into two joint ventures on the San Juan-Chama project of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The Azotea Tunnel is 12.7 miles in length; the inlet portal is on the Navajo River in Archileta County, Colorado, and the outlet portal is in New Mexico, about 10 miles south of the state border. The Oso Tunnel lies immediately to the north of the Azotea Tunnel and discharges water directly into it. We are presently driving both tunnels with mechanical boring machines from their portals at the Navajo River. Both tunnels are circular, fully concrete lined. The Azotea Tunnel has a finished diameter of 10 ft. 11 inches while the Oso Tunnel is 8 ft 7 inches in diameter. Both tunnels are supported with circular, structural steel rings as required by ground conditions. In good ground rock bolts and steel roof plates are used.

McPherson Having worked on the thermodynamics of air/liquid-water mixtures passing through the surface fans of deep mines, I find this paper of great interest and congratulate the authors on producing it. There are two matters, however, deserving discussion. First, the authors have described the classical theory of fog formation with fogging occurring at "supersaturation." In fact, the process of fog formation begins well below 100% humidity. The more strongly hygroscopic nuclei in the atmosphere will attract water molecules and begin to grow at a relative humidity perhaps as low as 70%. The process is a dynamic one with both condensation and evaporation taking place throughout the mixture on microscopic liquid surfaces. As saturation is approached, the rate of condensation accelerates rapidly producing the familiar reduction in visibility. Hygroscopic nuclei are present in all natural atmospheres and under the appropriate conditions of pressure and temperature, will produce clean fogs. However, if the air is polluted by particulates from combustion or other processes then the resultant coagulation with growing liquid particles may produce dense (and sometimes photochemical) smogs. It is this process that is likely to occur in underground mines when moist air is cooled below dew point. Second, the authors have summarized very well the individual measures that might alleviate the problem. In particular, I agree that neither heating nor refrigerating the air, by themselves, provides a satisfactory solution. However, there is a combination of these that provides a neat and effective control of fog formation. This involves a small, self-contained refrigeration unit within a duct but without the usual external heat rejection facility. The air is cooled below dew point and, hence, dehumidified on passing over the cold evaporator coils. The heat from the condenser is rejected back into the air downstream from the water eliminator, as shown in Fig. 1. The duct configuration can be designed to create good mixing at the outlet. I have used a climatic simulation program to illustrate the effect, assuming a 500-m (1,640 ft) long airway of cross section 60 m2 (645 sq ft), an airflow of 9 m3/s (318 cu ft per sec), inlet conditions of 19/19.25°C (66/67°F) wet bulb/dry bulb temperatures, a virgin rock temperature of 17°C (63°F) and typical rock thermal properties for a hard-rock mine. I have also assumed that 10% of the rock surface is wet. Figure 2 shows the variation in temperatures along the airway if no measures are taken. The relative humidity remains close to 100% and condensation will occur throughout the length of the airway. Before any such installation is designed, the exercise must, of course, be repeated for each location with accurate data. However, this example demonstrates the potential of the system. The idea is not new - the principle is sometimes used in air-conditioning plants for buildings. Figure 3 shows the effect of removing 30 kw of heat by evaporator coils sited 40 m (131 ft) along the airway and rejecting that heat (plus another 10 kw of compressor and fan power) into the air at 60 m (197 ft). Condensate water is produced, at a rate of 0.45 L/min (0.12 gpm). The result of this sequential cooling/dehumidification/heating process is to separate the wet and dry bulb temperatures along the length of the airway. The relative humidity increases from 80% at the duct outlet to 92% at 500 m (1,640 ft). The airway is maintained free from fog.

Power generation systems that promote energy security and environmental benefits are highly desired and pursued by a number of government and industry programs. Gasification of coal, other fossil fuels, or biomass has the technical promise of high efficiency and low or zero emission. Gasification for the purpose of electrical power generation has been researched, developed and demonstrated over the last 20 years, but for many reasons is not viewed as economically competitive. This paper describes a coal-based gasification technology well suited to mid and long-term goals of secure, environmentally clean energy. The technology should be adaptable for use with other carbon-based fuels including biomass and a full range of fossil fuels. The new zero emission gasification process is sponsored by ZECA Corporation, a continuation of the Zero Emission Coal Alliance (ZECA). ZECA has completed process design and engineering to assess the viability of a concept originated at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the creation of a business plan to define paths for advancing the technology toward a near-term goal pilot plant. The zero emission carbon (ZEC) technology includes hydrogasification, the production of hydrogen and the carbonation of lime with CO2. For the power generation base case, the hydrogen is used in high temperature coal compatible fuel cells to produce electricity and the carbonate is calcined to produce a pure stream of CO2for sequestration. This paper provides the status of work with the ZEC technology and the availability of crucial equipment, materials and required testing. Discussions are presented for future actions to accelerate the technology assessment, testing and demonstration of a ZEC plant. Brief remarks are provided on complementary projects dealing withCO2separation and gasification costs.

"The history of Duluth commences with Daniel de Greysolon du Lhut, one of the explorers of the Upper Mississippi who came to the head of the lakes in the summer of 1679. Radisson and Groseillier, and Claude Allouez, a Jesuit priest, are supposed to have visited the head of the lakes, -but there is no authentic record previous to that of du Lhut.In 1792, the fur traders established a fort at Fond du Lac, fifteen miles up the St. Louis River from Lake Superior, but within the limits of the present city •of Duluth. In the early 50's, there were a few scattering settlers at Oneota and around the George Stuntz trading post on Minnesota point. In 1855-6, the settlement on Minnesota point was called Duluth, commemorating the name du Lhut, and organized as a town in 1857. The first board of trustees and town council consisted of -William Nettleton, J. B. Culver; Robert E. Jefferson, Grin W. Rice and William Old: In 1870, the city of Duluth was incorporated, and five years later a portion of the same territory was incorporated as the village of Duluth, and the two municipal corporations were still in existence on March 1, 1887, when the city and the village of Duluth were incorporated as the present city.The first saw mill in Duluth was erected in 1856-57, on the present site of the ship canal. It cut logs from a virgin forest at the upper end of Minnesota point.The first railroad was built to the head of the lakes in 1870. The charter for this road had been granted in 1861 to the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company, afterward called the St. Paul and Duluth, and which is now a part of the Northern Pacific Railroad."

INTRODUCTION Limestone injection work was completed in a 440-kW (1.5-million Btu per hour) pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000-kg/h (110,000-lb per hour) industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives were to: (1) identify the important variables that affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum SO2 removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. A more detailed report is given by Lewis et al. (1985). The test program was divided into two phases. The objectives of Phase I were to determine the important variables that affect SO2 reduction and to investigate the effect of limestone addition on combustor operation and heat transfer surfaces. The objective of Phase II was to determine, using only the important variables identified during Phase I, the conditions that resulted in the greatest sulfur dioxide reduction. Phase I Test program Using one limestone, five variables were identified as having an effect on SO2 reduction. These are noted with their respective ranges: heat release rate [103 to 166 kW/m3 (10,000 to 16,000 Btu per hour-cu ft)], Ca/S molar ratio (0 to 3), flue gas oxygen concentration (3% to 5%), additive particle size [90% -150 µm (-100 mesh) and 90% -45 µm (-325 mesh)], and burner stoichiometry (SR = 0.75 and >1.15). A 2.3% sulfur northern West Virginia coal, pulverized to a nominal grind of 70% -75 µm (-200 mesh), was burned for the tests. The limestone used was obtained from a Maysville, KY, quarry and contained 51.75% (wt) CaO. An 11-run statistically designed program (plus three duplicates) was used to screen the five variables. The effect of limestone injection on the combustor heat transfer surfaces was determined by comparing the heat transfer rates through a slag panel and fouling probes during periods with and without limestone injection. Combustor operation was determined by noting any operating problems that occurred during the tests. Test procedure After furnace wall temperatures had stabilized at operating conditions, heat transfer surfaces (slag panel and fouling probes) and the convection section were blown clean, and a four-hour test was begun. The anomaly ratio is obtained by dividing the analyzed value of an element by the anomaly threshold value of the element. The sum of anomaly ratios for all anomalous elements in a sample may be compared with similar sums for other samples, so that the samples having the greatest anomaly-ratio totals can be recognized easily. In partial or full-suites-of-ore-elements the use of anomaly ratios is more meaningful than analyzed values because the ratios quickly indicate anomalous elements and call attention to samples and localities that should be investigated.

Impervious zones in copper waste heaps create a problem in contacting the rock with leaching solutions. These zones are normally associated with compacted layers .formed on the surface of each lift by dump truck traffic and by disintegration of the rock exposed to atmospheric conditions. These layers are usually only a few feet in depth--but, nevertheless, act as barriers to vertical flow causing the leach solution to perch in the heap, Consequently, much of the rock remains untouched and the leach solution breaks out the side of the heap instead of continuing downward to bedrock. One solution to this problem is breaking the hard pans with explosive charges. However, to use explosives means adopting new explosive materials and methods. To use this process successfully requires finding answers to operating conditions inherent to waste heaps. Foremost among these are: (1) type and size of casing that can be used because of limitations brought about by drilling problems, caving and, corrosive conditions; (2) perforating the casing at required levels; (3) an explosive capable of being pumped; (4) obtaining detonation of the, main charges through, the wail of the casing; (5) an explosive with the ability to propagate through the voids of the rubble and one which is not affected by water, acidic solutions, or back pressure conditions from hydrostatic heads; (6) to heave and rupture the compacted zones without chambering or recompressing the waste material.

"INTRODUCTION Newmont’s Twin Creeks operation, part of its Nevada operations, produces gold from two large open pit mines. Mined ore is processed at one of three on-site facilities: a refractory mill with two autoclaves, an oxide mill and heap leaching facilities. Twin Creeks also processes various off-site sourced concentrates and ore including high grade underground ore from the Turquoise Ridge joint venture with Barrick Gold Corporation. This paper discusses Twin Creeks’ strategic mine planning process which is part of an in-depth continuous improvement program called “Full Potential.” The process involves cost analysis, phase design validations, life-of-mine production scheduling optimization, mill blending strategy and stockpile management. Through this Full Potential strategic planning, Twin Creeks is creating significant value by increasing near term free cash flow and life of mine net present value (“NPV”) and achieving cost reductions. TWIN CREEKS OPERATION Twin Creeks is one of the major gold producers in Newmont’s Nevada operations (see Figure 1, 2 and 3). Located approximately 15 miles north of Golconda, Twin Creeks produced approximately 28 % of the Nevada operation’s 2013 gold production of 1.8 million ounces (Newmont 2014). The production included Turquoise Ridge sourced gold ore from the joint venture (75% Barrick Gold Corporation, 25% Newmont).At Twin Creeks, there are two large open pits, named Mega Pit and Vista Pit (see Figure 4, 5 and 6). There are 3 to 5 phases in Mega Pit and 2 to 5 phases in Vista Pit depending on the gold price assumption. There is also an underground exploration project at the bottom of the Vista Pit. Twin Creeks produces gold from a variety of ore types requiring different processing techniques depending on economic and metallurgical characteristics. To ensure the best use of processing assets, engineering and processing groups at Twin Creeks utilize a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (“MILP”) model to guide the flow of mine sequences and material routing to various process facilities (Kawahata, Schumacher and Hufford 2013)."

Plant testing of DuPont's Activator Technology in the vat leach circuit of the Homestake mine shows increased gold recoveries of 3-5%. Activators are catalysts of gold dissolution in cyanide solution. DuPont received the patent for this technology in January, 1996. The test was run in the west sand plant alternating control and activated vats to reduce the variability in head grade and cyanide consumption. Activated vats had gold in the preg solutions earlier, higher gold recovery, and lower gold residuals. Activator addition did not adversely affect mill operations or the environment. Optimization of the technology continues.

Success of The Carter Mining Company's safety program can be primarily attributed to "total immersion" of all operating and staff personnel in program design and implementation. Currently, the Company operates two surface coal mines in Campbell County, Wyoming. Total employment is about 440 and current annual production is about 15 million tons. The safety program has evolved from one which was administered primarily by staff personnel (the Safety Department) to one which requires active participation by line management and operating personnel. Lost time accident frequencies have declined from a high of 1.86 per 200K hours worked in 1978 to zero in 1982. Reportable accident frequencies have declined from slightly over 5 to slightly over 2 during the same period. Analysis of program results indicates that the most important achievement by the company has been to gain strong commitment to safe operation by all employees. It is important that program format and content be frequently changed and modified so that: 1) The requirement for safe job performance is communicated well and often, 2) The safe job performance message is trans- mitted in new and interesting ways, and 3) Operating personnel participate in design and implementation of the program.

"Broken and jointed ground is extremely hazardous and requires unique stabilization techniques to protect worker and critical entries. Bolting techniques, even the most advanced with pre-load to create roof compression, can leave large gaps of unconfined and separated roof. This roof can also be susceptible to water inflows which only exacerbate the support problem. These types of conditions existed on long term development main entry accessing several future longwall panels. The geotechnical assessment identified well-defined jointing systems that also permitted water to flow between the roof separations, which “lubricated” the roof material and minimized any frictional advantages. Chemical injection of a Polyurethane material, Minova Carbopur WS, was placed beyond the bolted horizon to move the water to the rib lines and reinforce the fractured and broken roof. The injection material permitted the effective use of bolting patterns and helped ensure long-term stability of these critical entries. The paper describes the evaluation techniques, design patterns, basis for chemical selection and application, and results and recommendations.BACKGROUNDThe injection of mine and underground civil structures using polyurethane (PUR) has been ongoing for over 50 years. The applications in mining have included gate road stabilizations, longwall set-up and tear-down entries, and simple consolidation of coal mine roofs. PURs have also been used for roof stabilization during longwall shield recoveries. Polyurethane injection was initially developed by the Bergbau-Forshung GmbH, a German coal mine research institute, in the early 1960s (Jankowski, 1972). The product became a standard stabilization method in Germany after its commercial introduction in 1971 (Knoblauch, 1994), and was successfully manufactured at the Minova Essen, Germany location for over 50 years. With the recent closing of the German underground mines, that manufacturing facility has been closed and moved to Katowice, Poland, where production continues today Injection products are also being successfully manufactured by Minova in Australia and the United States.Polyurethane injection in underground coal mines is used in difficult ground conditions in fractured immediate and main roofs. It is also common as a rock stabilization remedy to prevent longwall face caving during shield removal. As presented in the case study, polyurethane was applied to minimize the inflow of water from beneath a stream channel while providing reinforcement and consolidation of the fractured roof that had lost confinement. Polyurethane is a two-component system (Part A and Part B) that is injected into a borehole and can chemically bond to the rock, not relying on friction or mechanical interlock to provide support. The material is injected under pressure, coupled with a low viscosity and small particle size; it flows into roof fractures and separations, which are the paths of least resistance. New developments in low viscosity PUR materials allows penetration of cracks as tight as 0.002 inch (0.05 mm) wide. This also allows for the closures of extremely small cracks to minimize the inflow of water, even if the water is under pressure. Combinations of designed expansion properties and low viscosities make the materials ideal for minimizing and stopping flows of water from underground structures."

Strip mining in the domestic coal industry is contributing a greater proportion of overall production than at any time in the past. U. S. Bureau of Mimes statistics show that the percentage of total production mined in 1958 by stripping methods in- creased to more than 30 pct, up from 22 pct in 1951. The tendency to favor strip and open pit mining exists in other mining activities, but such trends are not as clearly outlined as in the coal industry. Significantly, the depth of overburden in coal properties considered suitable for stripping is also increasing. A depth of 50 to 60 ft of overburden was once considered to be about the maximum amount that could be handled economically, Today, a depth of 80 to 100 ft is frequently taken into consideration for simple overcasting operations (i.e., excavating over- burden and dumping it in the spoil position where it remains indefinitely). Significantly, the depth of overburden in coal properties considered suitable for stripping is also increasing. A depth of 50 to 60 ft of overburden was once considered to be about the maximum amount that could be handled economically, Today, a depth of 80 to 100 ft is frequently taken into consideration for simple overcasting operations (i.e., excavating overburden and dumping it in the spoil position where it remains indefinitely).

INTRODUCTION The term, chelate, from the Greek for 'claw,' has its origin in the pincer-like representation of more than one atom of a single ligand bonded to the same metal atom, forming a ring-like structure. Depending on how many attachments exist on the sphere of coordination around the metal ion, ligands are referred to as bidentate, tridentate, tetradentate, pentadentate and hexadentate According to Calvin and Martell (1952) and Somasundaran and Nagaraj (1984), chelating agents must contain suitable functional groups, and their location within the ligand molecule must enable ring formation that is sterically possible. Typical structures that meet these requirements have been given by Fuerstenau and Herrera-Urbina (1988) and are listed in Figure 1. As noted, the functional groups of these reagents contain electron donor atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. Basic groups, such as amino (-NH,), are those that contain an atom with a lone pair of electrons. Acid groups are those, such as carboxylic (-COOH) which lose a hydrogen ion and coordinate with the metal atom. Examples of each of these types chelating reagents are given in Tables 1-4. The specificity of chelating agents for various metal ions has long been known and was utilized early in the search for new flotation collectors. In 1927, Vivian used ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine as a collector for cassiterite. Holman (1929) tested dimethylglyoxime as a collector for nickel oxide. He also suggested taurin as a collector for oxidized lead ores. DeWitt and von Batchelder (1939) suggested the use of oximes as flotation collectors. Gutzeit (1946) conducted an extensive investigation on the use of chelating agents as collectors and as depressants for gangue minerals. Simulation has established itself as an accepted tool for the design and optimization of complex minerals processing plants. This paper addresses the use of simulation as a tool for the design and optimization of carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) plants. The complex, interactive nature of CIP/CIL plants makes detailed experimentation an expensive and time consuming approach to CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization. This paper discusses a simulation-based software tool that can make the process of CIP/CIL plant design and/or optimization much more cost effective. Many of the issues and problems pertaining to the use of simulation for CIP/CIL design and operation are generic. Thus, this paper also attempts to highlight generic issues that must be solved before simulation will become a more widely used design and optimization tool. Requirements for the application of simulation for CIP/CIL plant design and optimization are highlighted. Similar problems and issues can be identified for most mineral processing plants.

"Prospecting and Exploration. Since the Lake Superior ores occur in pockets or distinct bodies and vary much as to character and location, the actual mining of the ores is preceded by much work of an exploratory character. This work includes prospecting and exploration.Prospecting is the term generally applied to the quest for surface indications of ore, or the conditions which would warrant the expectation of finding ore in the vicinity. It includes such 'operations as geological examination, dip needle work, shallow test-pitting, and trenching. The ore bodies of the Mesabi Range are non-magnetic, and dip needle prospecting is therefore valueless. On the Cuyuna range, however, magnetic attraction as evidenced by the dip needle has been extensively employed as a guide to the location of ore deposits; in other localities it has found limited application.Drill Exploration. After the presence of an ore deposit is known or suspected, resort is generally had to exploration by means of diamond or churn drills. On the old ranges geological conditions generally make this manner of ascertaining the exact limits of an ore deposit impracticable; so, if two or three adjacent drill holes develop considerable depths of ore, the sinking of a shaft for underground exploration, development and mining is generally considered warranted. On the Mesabi Range, however, the flat-lying and comparatively shallow characteristics of the ore formation warrant much more extensive drill explorations. On this range, then, an ore body 'is almost invariably followed· out with the drills, and its limits are determined to the point where the complete plan of development can be worked out in advance of actual mining operations"

The Bond ball mill grindability test is one of the most common metrics used in the mining industry for ore hardness measurements. The test is an important part of the Bond work index methodology for designing and measuring the efficiency of mineral grinding circuits. In spite of being called “Bond’s Law,” the work index equations are not a law of nature; but rather an empirically measured regression of a large data set collected by the Allis- Chalmers corporation in the period between 1930 and 1952. As a regression, it is valid within a specific “calibration space,” and great care is required when deviating the test procedures or observing results that are outside of that calibration space. This paper is a collected summary of other works by the Authors that describe feed sizes, product sizes, quality control checks, and other information about interpreting the test and using its results. Examples of adjustments that are sometimes required when using the test are: changing the test product (P80), and coping with a feed that is too fine to apply the “proper” feed preparation steps (such as is sometimes observed from HPGR or SAGDesign product testing). Related metrics, like the Morrell Mib value and Levin B value will be discussed, along with recommendations for their use on design projects. The intended audience is any user of laboratory work index test data.

INTRODUCTION This paper discusses two uranium tailings waste disposal studies that reflect the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory actions and their changing requirements during the mid to late 1970's. Present guidelines require that all new uranium tailings impoundments be designed and constructed to eliminate, to the extent that it is reasonably achievable, exposures and risks to the public from the tailings. This includes positive measures for control of seepage losses from the impoundment and for control of radiological releases caused by wind and water erosion. Long-term stability of the reclaimed impoundment is also a very important requirement. That is, it is intended that the tailings impoundment, once it is reclaimed, will require little or no care or maintenance as long as the uranium tailings remain a hazard. Principally because of the long-term stability objective, the NRC has now identified subsurface burial of the tailings as the "prime option" for tailings disposal. The environmental implications of these proposed regulatory actions are obviously desirable. The economic implications the actions may have on a particular project are not always so obvious because they are so dependent on environmental suitability of site conditions. Selection of a site with favorable topographic, geologic and hydrologic conditions will usually result in the most economically and environmentally attractive alternative for tailings disposal. The first project discussed in this paper was initiated before the NRC guidelines had been developed to favour subsurface burial. At the beginning, seepage and radon emission control requirements were moderate. Constraints were imposed on the design by site topography, geology, and project capitalization considerations, factors which were dealt with according to straightforward engineering and design principles. More serious constraints were imposed by changing regulatory requirements. Unlike the more usual engineeringrelated constraints, regulatory requirements were upgraded during the design process, causing the design itself to undergo numerous modifications. Waste treatment in the mining industry is by no means a new problem to this field. In a sense, the entire process from ore to finished product is one of waste treatment - the separation of a relatively minor quantity of desired component from valueless material. Where it has been necess-ary or economical to practice conventional waste treatment or pollution control methods, such as dust collection, water recovery from tailings, or impounding of residues for future treatment, this has been done. Generally the containment of hazardous pollutants such as arsenic and cyanide also has been followed in modern times. But it is only recently, with the public outcry for the elimination of all forms of pollution, "that the industry has been forced to solve what often appears to be a myriad of difficult and costly waste treatment problems, or be faced with the alternative of closing down the operation. It is the objective of this paper to describe new as well as conventional approaches to these problems, specifically as might be applicable to liquid-solids separation methods. Host wastes in the industry are present either as solutions or slurries, or can be most advantageously handled by conversion to this form, such as in scrubbing noxious gases and dusts with water. Separation of the solids and purification of the aqueous effluents are, therefore, often the principle problems.

A series of adsorption tests are carried out to understand the ability of cationic surfactants and metal ions to adsorb onto sepiolite. Adsorption tests conducted as a function of heat treatment reveal that sepiolite is rather conducive to the uptake of both organic and inorganic ions. An ion exchange mechanism between surfactant or metal cation and magnesium ion followed by chain-chain association is proposed to explain the incorporation of cationic surfactants into the structure of sepiolite.
