The Cross City Tunnel comprises 2km of a new underground traffic route in Sydney, Australia. The route is very complex, involving some six separate tunnels and three underground Y-junctions. For almost 200m the six tunnels run parallel at different level sunder William Street, Sydney. Almost all of the route runs adjacent to the City Business District of Sydney and adjacent to or below many major buildings and services. The planning and design of this project is described. The geometric arrangement is achieved with a strong dependence on 3D road design packages. Road alignment constraints include land acquisition and proximity to existing tunnels and basements as well as maintaining separation from the other tunnels in the scheme. Geotechnical and hydrogeological studies are described. Findings discussed include the high horizontal stress field in the Sydney area and investigation of incised palaeochannels on the route. Methods of design for the tunnels and Y-junctions are described, as well as methods of settlement prediction for the buildings and services. The latter includes the settlement assessment for more than 200 buildings, many in excess of 20 storeys, as well as services including all of the city railway lines in Sydney.

Thiohydrometallurgical systems including thiosulfate, thiocyanate and thiourea have been stud- ied as alternative liriviants for the leaching of gold. Research and development of thiohydrometallurgical technology has been prompted by environmental concerns with the use of cyanide and problems associated with the processing of difficult-to-treat ores. These thiosystems have some chemical similarities, enabling gold to be leached in a practical oxidizing environment. However, the solution chemistry of the thiosystems is complicated due to instability of the thioreagents and many other reactions which occur during the gold leaching reaction. In this paper, interference reactions of selected metal ions and sulfide minerals are examined in order to understand important aspects of solution chemistry which control the stability of the thioleaching reactions. Applications using thioreagents as lixiviants for oxide and refractory gold ores are presented.

Even with conservative mine planning, rib instability can progress from a nuisance to a major safety hazard. This Bureau of Mines paper examines the mechanisms of progressive rib failure in high mine openings and discusses techniques to control rib slabbing. A field test site in a longwall mine was instrumented to investigate rib behavior during mining. While data analysis showed minor pillar dilation. sporadic zones of progressive rib instability were detected that culminated in eventual rib failure. The failure occurred despite conservative pillar dimensions and shallow depth. Models were used to demonstrate the mechanisms of rib failure and then evaluate the influence of support and other mine-related parameters on rib behavior.

Salt, because of its plasticity, exerts a major influence in deformation. Resulting salt structures are common world-wide. A special type, salt domes, are associated with thick sequences of sediments deposited over salt. Their upward intrusion is generally thought to be in response to buoyancy. Mines in salt domes reveal an internal pattern compatible with large amounts of vertical flowage. Caprock, the end product of accumulation of anhydrite from salt dissolution, attests to long continued upward growth and concomitant truncation by moving underground waters. Concepts of modes of growth are evaluated and related to problems in utilization.

INTRODUCTION The occurrence of the radioactive element radium, [2gg~a], often in trace amounts, in the crust of the earth gives rise to a flux of the daughter product radon, ['ii~n], across the earth-air interface. This so-called exhalation process has been studied by many investigators [KO 45, Kra 64, Pe 66, Wi 741] over several decades. In the earlier investigations the exhalation process was studied in a purely geophysical context, but over the last 20 years it has been realized, that under certain conditions the exhalation may be intense enough to also have radiological implications. This is for example the case where relatively radium-rich wastes or by-products, like uranium mill tailings and phospho-gypsum, are stored in larger quantities. In order to be able to predict the radiological impact on the environnent it is necessary to know the rate of exhalation of radon from the surface of the exhaling material. Usually the determination of these exhalation rates has been done by measurements in situ directly upon the accumulated material [~le 74, Ha 791. Although such field measurements have the obvious merit of dealing directly with the full scale problem, the results are often lacking in generality, making predictions for other situations difficult or even impossible. The present paper describes some results of an investigation where it is attempted from laboratory measurements on samples of limited size to obtain material parameters, which are suited for extrapolating and predicting the radiational behaviour of larger accumulations of the material. THEORY Let us consider a sample of a radon exhaling material enclosed in a container with a dead space volume, Vd, and initially containing radon free air. If the total exhalation rate (number of atoms per unit time) is c, the radon concentration (number of atoms per unit volume) N will initially grow with the time t according to the equation [ ] where [R] is the decay constant of radon. As the concentration (or activity) in the container grows, the net exhalation rate will slow down because of back diffusion, and, furthermore, radon atoms may be removed from the container, not only by radioactive decay, but also by diffusion leakage [JO 81 ]. If, however,only the initial. part of the activity growth curve is considered, the total exhalation rate, c, is given by [c = r•Vd(2) where r is the initial activity growth rate in the container. Let the container be cylindrical with an inner cross-section S and filled to a height L with a radon exhaling material with the specific mass p, the porosity E, the radon pore production rate f and the diffusion length i. ERIC GUTIERREZ, Knowledgescape: Our next speaker is Randy Ynchausti. He's the director of development, Knowledgescape systems division, of EIMCO Process Equip- ment Company. The title of Randy's talk is "An Expert Control System for Phosphate Beneficiation." RANDY YNCHAUSTI: System integration. How does the systems integrator survive when caught between plant engineers, plant management, and third-party engineering firms, and stay within the budget of the corporate goals? I'm not sure that anyone knows how to do all of that on one project. Results are critical when we talk about how systems integrators work with operating people, how the operating people want systems integrators to work with them, and how both groups work together so that at the end of a project, you have been provided with solutions that meet your needs and solve your problems at a fair price. How does the integrator's role change when working with different types of professionals, such as plant managers, plant engineers, engineering firms, or other system integrators? Finally, what is the dynamics of people working with machines and providing services and solving needs? The average number of employees per pound of copper processed has decreased significantly during the past 15 years. I would dare to generalize and say that the average number of employees per whatever unit of measure we have in whatever industry we work in has decreased over the last 15 years. From a system integrator's perspective, there are some clients who lack a bit of internal expertise as corporate downsizing occurs, and that's one reason why we go out to system integrators or third-party vendors and buy things from them to solve our problems. Downsizing really amounts to savings, but more than that, I think Brian expressed this and I agree with him, it also amounts to a cost. Unfortunately, most of us count the savings and none of us count the cost in that approach. It's easy to count the savings, which is one reason why we count it so quickly. Maybe that also accounts for why we set our pencils down so quickly after we get that dollar value. Maybe we should pick that pencil up every once in awhile and refigure the expense, the cost to us, and determine what we're going to pay during the next year or two or three in losing that expense, or that staff. Considerable movement is afoot internationally to rationalize standards and regulations relating to valuations and the qualifications for valuation professionals. In July 2000 the International Valuation Standards Committee released expanded standards, and additional important improvements are planned by 2003. Possible updates to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and potential adoption of IAS by the United States could significantly impact minerals appraisers. Standards designed specifically for mineral asset valuation are under development in Canada and the United States, with Australia's internationally respected VALMIN Code providing the benchmark. In the United States, the all-encompassing Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is annually modified and continues to gain deeper acceptance, while the SEC holds fast to its 1981 rule prohibiting reporting of a quantitative estimate and value for non-reserve mineralization. Some important international trade agreements are driving actions to free the trade in professional services. In July 2000, an international workshop was held to initiate discussion on minimum qualifications for appraisers to work internationally. Pressure for uniform minimum qualifications and rules for professionals internationally will continue to build. The United States is historically among the slowest countries to implement such initiatives, with its state level licensure barriers having the potential to cause some of its professionals to be stranded in an international backwater. Structural change is needed in Australia's VALMIN Code to remove conflict with the latest International Valuation Standards. The mineral valuation standards developers of Australia, Canada and the United States should work jointly on updating VALMIN for global use.

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine-mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine-mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels, while using a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1-m (20-ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complement the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off-curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

Research methods to develop an economic model for the determination of regional mineral advantage are discussed. An industrial complex conceptual framework is used to study potential mineral resource outputs of Kansas. A procedure for making a comparative cost analysis of potential outputs for a Kansas-based industrial complex is outlined and illustrated. Methods for estimating aggregate demand and for developing an input-output matrix for a hypothetical limestone complex are explained. The input-output matrix is expressed in physical units. A computer algorithm for converting physical production data and input cost data into total cost per unit of output information is briefly explained and flowcharted. Limitations and usefulness of this procedure in determining regional advantages are surveyed.

INTRODUCTION Several major factors introduce uncertainties into the assessment of radon progeny exposure to miners using time-weighted average radon progeny concentrations: uncertainty in the measurement of radon progeny concentrations in specific areas, assignment of an individual miner's time to those areas, variation in radon progeny concentration between measurements and potential human errors involved in calculating concentrations and handling data. The currently available grab-sampling methods for determining working level were analyzed to determine the magnitude of the uncertainty due to each of these factors. For all measurement methods studied, the variation in the airborne concentration with time in operational areas of a mine is the dominant factor in the uncertainty in determining annual radon progeny exposures for individual miners. Uncertainties relating to accuracy of the method and precision of measurement were found to contribute a significantly greater portion of the total uncertainty than human errors. Under normal conditions, if the technicians performing the measurements are conscientious and well trained, human error contributes little to the total uncertainty of the radon progeny exposure determination. The primary goal of radiation monitoring is the reduction of radiation exposure to the lowest reasonably achievable level below regulatory limits. Monitoring personnel in mines should be trained not only to obtain accurate estimates of miner radiation exposures but also to recognize and, when possible, to implement correction of situations which result in unnecessarily high radon progeny exposures. ESTIMATION OF UNCERTAINTY DUE TO HUMAN ERRORS Human errors affecting the assignment of annual radon progeny exposure to individual miners can be placed in two categories: those related to the measurement of radon progeny concentration in specific mine areas and those related to estimation of occupancy time for individual miners and transcribing data to permanent records. The former are specific for the measurement method used; the latter are common to all methods. Errors in Determination of Working Level All systems for determining radon progeny concentration require measurement of several parameters, which include volume of air sampled, count rate and decay time. These quantities and appropriate constants are used in a basic equation, specific to the system, which estimates working level. An unintentional random mistake in measurement of any one of these parameters or in the selection of proper constants will contribute to the uncertainty in the determination of working level. In our analysis of human error we separated each measurement method into a sequence of independent operations, with each step subject to operator error. For each operation we estimated the probability of occurrence and the consequence of errors to obtain a resulting uncertainty. Certain types of errors result in specific consequences. For example, we assumed that an error of 5 seconds in timing of a 5-minute sample results in a fractional error of 1/60 (1.7%). Other types of errors can result in a range of uncertainty. Transposing digits read from a scaler can produce errors ranging from near zero to approximately 60%. In these cases we calculated the statistical variance for the distribution of errors. We assigned the square root of the variance divided by the mean as the consequence factor for that type of error. This is essentially the same as a coefficient of variation. The product of the probability of occurrence and the consequence factor is the fractional uncertainty in the measurement due to that particular error. The total uncertainty due to human errors is calculated by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the uncertainties generated by all manual operations. Uncertainties Due to Human Error for the Kusnetz Method One of the techniques most commonly used to estimate working level in U.S. uranium mines is the Kusnetz method. A generalized way to express the equation used to compute WL by this method is: WL = (Net Alpha Counts)/(V)(ST)(CT)(E)(K) where: V = sample flow rate in liters/min ST = sampling time in min CT = counting time in minutes E = absolute counting efficiency K = Kusnetz conversion factor (dis/min-L per WL), as a function of decay time in minutes. The example of human error analysis presented here is based on the Kusnetz procedure having a timing sequence of 5 minutes sampling time, 40 minute decay time, 2 minute counting time. During the sampling procedure a stop watch is used to determine the timing interval. We assume that it is common to make small timing errors of a few seconds, but larger timing errors occur infrequently. Reserve depletion in Central Appalachia is continuously creating unique ground conditions for underground coal mines with many of these difficult environments directly attributable to multiple seam mining and/or deeper overburdens. While many empirical studies have been performed in an effort to improve understanding of these problems along with potentially improving safety and extraction, many of the difficulties encountered lie outside of the normal realm of expected behavior. This is often the case when mining in bump prone ground, where additional concerns are introduced and design buffers are warranted. The boundary element software LaModel was used to study three bump events in a deep-cover, multiple-seam reserve located in Harlan county in the Kentucky region of Central Appalachia. This region is notoriously bump prone due to significant areas of deep cover, the presence of strong to massive lithology (such as sandstone), and an extensive history of underground mining that increases the probability of multiple seam interactions. Multiple seam interactions are best understood with respect to site-specific parameters, including both the geological and geometrical components of interburden, overburden and mine workings. Initially, empirical-based approaches (ARMPS/AMSS) were used when attempting to back-analyze the bump events. However, it was recognized that a more detailed investigation was necessary to understand the fundamental causes/conditions associated with the bump events. Consequently, the LaModel study resulted in a mine-specific calibration method for the reserve. With this method in place, enhanced bump prediction throughout the reserve is expected, such that the stability, recovery and safety of future mining may be improved.

"Mine water generated from underground coal mining operations contains both dissolved and particulate solids. Dissolved solids primarily consist of sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorides and sulfates. When discharged to a receiving stream without treatment, these constituents create a potentially toxic environment for aquatic life.A case study is presented to discuss how a centralized treatment plant treats mine water from six locations to meet discharge limitations for chlorides. Located in West Virginia, this facility consistently achieves less than the National Pollutant Discharge Elemenation System (NPDES) permit limitation of 218 mg/L chlorides in the discharge while generating almost zero liquid waste. The dissolved solids concentration in the influent ranges between 5,000 and 10,000 mg/L, with chloride concentrations of 1,000 to 2,000 mg/L and sulfate concentrations of 2,000 to 6,000 mg/L.The mine water is treated using advanced treatment technology to produce clean water for discharge or reuse. The treatment process comprises aeration, softening, filtration, reverse osmosis (RO) reject softening, evaporation, crystallization, final effluent remineralization and sludge dewatering. The solid waste generated in the treatment process is landfilled on site. The leachate is sent back to the facility’s thermal treatment process. Because no liquid waste leaves the property, this plant is termed a zero liquid waste (ZLW) facility.The advanced water treatment system was built to meet a new 218 mg/L regulatory limitation imposed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for chlorides discharged to surface waters. The system is designed to treat a maximum flow of approximately 795 m3/h (5 million gpd) of mine water. The treatment process utilizes RO membrane treatment to achieve the effluent criteria, and evaporation and crystallization technology to manage the RO concentrate from the water treatment process. As a result, the system produces clean water for discharge while generating zero liquid waste. The effluent water can be used for industrial purposes or discharged to a receiving stream. A water impact index (WIIx) study indicated that discharge of this high-quality water into the Monongahela River watershed may improve the water quality for downstream water users. The waste produced in the treatment process, including softening sludge and salt, is disposed of in an onsite landfill. Currently, the plant is treating at an average flow of 490 m3/h (3.1 million gpd) of mine water with an average influent chloride concentration of 1,530 mg/L and an average effluent chloride concentration of 11 mg/L."

To help in the search for new deposits, exploration "lessons" will be drawn from the papers given at the Fall AIME Applied Geology Symposium. In addition, examples will be re-emphasized to show how early observation of matters now routine to mine work (for example, hydrology, rock mechanics, oxidation state) can help increase the effectiveness of exploration.

"Technical advances in longwall mining over the last several years have resulted in much larger and faster shearers that have the capability of mining at speeds over 100 ft./min. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of dust that is generated at the shearer and during shield advances. Meanwhile, increased underground coal production has put a greater demand on longwall dust control systems as some operators have had difficulty maintaining consistent compliance with federal dust standards. To address this need, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH] is investigating the effectiveness of a water spray manifold mounted on the tailgate end of the shearer body. The sprays are oriented parallel to the tailgate ranging arm, and these sprays create a water curtain confining the dust plume near the face, preventing the dust from drifting into the walkway. This redirection of dust provides a clean air envelope for the tailgate shearer operator and jacksetters working near the tailgate drum. Three different tailgate spray manifold designs were tested and evaluated at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research [OMSHR] Pittsburgh Longwall Test Facility. Manifolds were equipped with hollow cone or flat fan water spray nozzles and evaluated at three face air velocities (500, 700, and 900 fpm) and at water pressures of 100, 150, and 200 psi. Reductions in dust concentrations were observed at six face sampling locations for all the tailgate manifold systems at each of the tested spray pressures and face velocities. Based on results from the laboratory tests showing reductions in dust concentrations at sampling locations downwind of the shearer a spray manifold was fabricated and evaluated at an underground operation. INTRODUCTION In 2012, underground coal mining in the United States produced a total of 342 million short tons, with longwall mining accounting for over 53% of this production [EIA 2013]. The longwall mining industry continues to see remarkable and significant improvements in longwall mining equipment and mining practices. Average shift production during compliance dust sampling has increased from 3,500 tons per shift in 1994 to approximately 6,000 tons per shift in 2012. A dramatic decrease in working longwall faces from 80 to 49 has occurred over the same period [Fiscor 2013]. Factors specific to longwall mines that supported productivity improvement include: higher capacity shearers, improved shield hydraulics and control, higher horsepower for equipment, wider face conveyors, and larger faces. Today, the average face width has increased to 1,188 ft., with one longwall operation reporting a face width of 1,650 ft. compared to an average of 750 ft. in 1994 [Fiscor 2009, 2014]. Panel lengths in 2013 averaged 11,307 ft. compared to 7,000 ft. in 1994. Overall production from U.S. longwalls has increased by nearly four percent from 2007 to 2012 with over 182 million tons mined annually [EIA 2013]. Given the volume and rate of coal produced on longwall faces, the potential to generate large quantities of respirable coal mine dust also exists."

Reconciliation of long-term, block-model reserves and mine production frequently shows significant discrepancies. This reconciliation can be done comparing the long-term, block-model reserves against a grade control model (a model based on blast holes or production data). In this article, this is called an Fl factor for tonnages, grade and ounces. This reconciliation should also be done by comparing the grade control model to the mill feed (or loaded to heaps) tonnages, grades and ounces (F2 factor). The long-term model usually contains blocks with dimensions larger than the size of the selective mining unit (SMU) of the operation. The smoothing effect of an estimator, such as kriging, will generally result in a grade-tonnage curve that does not match the grade-tonnage curve of the SMUs to be recovered. This problem is partly to blame for the reconciliation discrepancies found. In addition, in-pit perfect selection is impossible. Therefore, the grade-tonnage predictions based on blastholes also need to be assessed - considering unplanned dilution and the errors of estimation of the grade control model. This article focuses on using conditional simulations to assess the uncertainty of the predicted grade-tonnage curve in terms of minable reserves and in the framework of long-term mine planning. Quantifying the uncertainty in no uncertain terms is done in conjunction with a popular pit optimizer. It yields several possible minable reserves and several possible minable tonnages and grades, per pit shell or scheduled phase. This is a step further from the usual sensitivity analyses that are performed for deposit evaluation or development planning. Specifically, this approach takes into account the volume-variance relationship, the selectivity of the mining operation and the planned and unplanned dilution. It also carries the local uncertainty implicit in grade estimation into the mine design and mine planning phases. The estimation of recoverable reserves revolves around estimating the block distribution of metal grades from the drill hole information available, typically composites of a fixed length. Ideally, this estimation should accurately predict the ore sent to the processing facilities of an operation. Here are some definitions used in this article: ? Recoverable reserves are those where an attempt has been made to estimate the actual distribution of grades (usually by a block model) that would be found in the ground at the time of mining, relative to the mine equipment size and other operational characteristics of the mine SMU. In particular, it incorporates the effect of internal dilution for each block how the grade distribution changes in variability when comparing a composite grade distribution to the "mining unit" grade distribution. In geostatistical jargon, this is known as "change of support effect," or volume-variance effect. ? Minable reserves are those recoverable reserves defined by a mine plan. In an open-pit scenario, they would incorporate pit optimization in addition to the sequencing and scheduling of production through mine life. ? All other block model estimates from drill hole data that do not explicitly attempt to estimate or measure the volume-variance effect are called in situ. It can be argued that these models may be inappropriate tools for predicting the grade-tonnage curve of the material to be sent for processing (minable reserves). The purpose of estimating recoverable reserves can be thought of as estimating the appropriate amount of dilution that should be incorporated into the model so that it adequately predicts (long-term and on average) the grade-tonnage curve of the ore sent to the processing facilities (mean grades and ton-

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 15th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards banquet on Saturday, Dec. 6,1997 in Tucson, AZ, preceeding the Arizona Conference of SME. The Mining Foundation's Hall of Fame, located in Tucson, recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by individuals and industry partners. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society at 949 E. Second St. in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining history are chosen by the Hall of Fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation also initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. And in 1995, an award was instituted to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee is James R. Moffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. He will be present as guest of honor and featured speaker. The Hall of Fame will induct John V. Dorr, metallurgist and chemical engineer. Also inducted will be Frederick L. Ransome, a geologist. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Hugo T. Sphalerite is commonly floated in an alkaline environment and under such conditions the overall activation mechanism is obscured by the hydrolysis of Cu2+ and precipitation of Cu(OH)2. Electrokinetic and kinetic flotation tests show that the activation of sphalerite is a two-stage process; the activation products formed on the surface of sphalerite in near neutral and in alkaline solutions in the first rapid activation stage are "flotation-inactive". These layers, when formed in an alkaline solution, are unstable and are transformed into the "flotation-active" form in the second stage. However, the surface layers formed during activation in alkaline environment by copper in the presence of lead ions are very stable and even after a long conditioning time the flotation rate is not improved. Consequently, while both Cu2+ and Pb2+ activate sphalerite flotation, quite unpredictable effects may result when both are present in the solution.

Longwall mining is a commonly used method of coal extraction that involves the complete removal of large, rectangular panels of coal. Longwall mining causes the immediate seam roof to break and fall into the void created by mining. The convergence of the surrounding strata towards the mining void causes subsidence on the surface. The subsidence magnitude is related not only to the mining depth, the topography, the geological features and the overburden materials, but also to the sequence of the strata overlying a coal seam. In additional to the vertical subsidence which is evident at the surface, there are also horizontal movements inwards toward the centre of the void, which cause the surface to tilt, bend, stretch and com-press. This paper presents a parametric investigation of the influence of the overburden stratigraphy to surface deformations due to longwall mining using 2D finite element models. Models simulate rock movement by applying equivalent edge load to the open roof.

The analytical pillar design procedure employing the Wilson equation is based on the site-specific material strength of the floor, pillar, and roof rock. Stable pillars so designed will sometimes be larger than those designed using empirical methods thus providing more stability or at other times smaller than empirically designed pillars thus conserving natural resources. Presented here is a detailed procedure for the analytical design of soft rock pillars using the Wilson Equation. An example of this procedure is presented that uses data from a mine in the Owl Seam in Southern Appalachia. These Owl Seam pillars are now in use and are performing as expected. Also addressed is an assessment of the Dr. Scovazzo?s analytically designed pillars based on pillar performance data gathered by Dr. Mark in the Southern Appalachian Coal Field.

"When utilizing high recovery underground mining methods, such as longwall or high-extraction room-and-pillar mining, the movement and deformation of the overburden propagate toward the surface and may affect the integrity of overlying surface streams (Peng et al, 1996). Published studies cite three major mechanisms of subsidence as most likely to impact streams: displacement, slope and strain. While subsidence-induced vertical displacement cause little structural damage to the stream bed, it may create adverse drainage and stream flow issues as the subsidence trough allows for ponding (Dawkins, 2003). Subsidenceinduced changes to the slope, or tilt, of a stream may have adverse effects on water flow. As the stream enters the subsidence trough, the gradient increases providing potential erosion control problems. When exiting the subsidence trough, a reduction of the gradient may inhibit stream flow, causing localized ponding (Peng, 2008). While vertical displacement and tilt both may have detrimental effects to surface streams, the resulting strains have been documented as being the most damaging to surface streams and structures causing distortion, fractures, or failure (Singh, 1992). When stream beds are subjected to high tensile strain, tensile cracks may form at the surface level allowing for the direct loss of stream flow through fissures. When stream beds are located in areas of high compressive strain, rock layers forming the stream bed can fail as the stream bed ruptures, upward, blocking stream flow or having the stream diverted into the fracture zone at the base (Iannacchione, et. al., 2010).Recent investigations on the effects of underground mining on surface bodies of water suggest that to determine the degree of stream impact one must also consider the geologic structure and thicknesses, surface topography, watershed drainage areas, width of river bed and rate of mining. Due to the complex nature and number of parameters affecting surface streams, subsidence modeling tools and software packages should be implemented throughout all stages of subsidence planning, prediction and control. The Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) utilizes the influence function for the calculation of final subsidence deformations with respect to the angle of influence, supercritical subsidence factor as a function of the percent hard rock, edge effect offset distance, and surface topography. Developed more than 25 years ago, SDPS has been continually updated with new analysis and prediction features, providing a reliable and versatile program for subsidence management methodologies. Most recently, the program has been updated to evaluate the effect of varying surface topography in the prediction of horizontal displacements, referred to as ground strain, allowing for the accurate three-dimensional representation of surface deformations in mountainous terrain (Agioutantis and Karmis, 2014). Ground strain has become one of the predominant deformation indices used in the evaluation of potential damage to surface structures (Karmis et al., 1995). Ongoing work with SDPS software seeks to investigate the calculation of ground strain in SDPS and its ability to accurately and realistically predict damage to surface streams due to underground mining operations."
