In underground mine production units that employ discrete-vehicle face haulage, feeders are used in the belt network so that vehicles can unload rapidly without transmitting to the conveyor network the high material flow rates that result from rapid unloading. They prevent production bottlenecks at the face, while reducing capacity requirements for downstream materials handling equipment. Similarly, surge bins may be installed at intermediate locations in the network to smooth flows from a number of upstream sources, thereby reducing downstream belt capacity requirements. This paper introduces new stochastic process models to temporally describe loading patterns from unit operations and techniques for computing the probability of various fill levels for the feeder or surge bin. These results may be used to analyze the effect of alternative bin or feeder capacities and discharge rates on the performance and costs of the materials handling system.

In the past decade, there have been several incidents of massive ground collapses in underground stone mines in the eastern United States. Fortunately, these events have not resulted in any fatalities. However, three mine workers were injured and many others were at risk due to the hazard from the fall of ground and/or the airblast associated with these massive collapses. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a project to better understand the causes of these massive ground collapses to help prevent their future occurrence. The main objective of this study is to investigate the main factor(s)that initiated one of these massive ground collapses. The authors relied on several tools including three-dimensional (3-D) LiDAR scans for the surface subsidence feature and the underground mine workings around the collapsed area, borescope data at multiple locations around the collapse, S-Pillar analysis for average and unfavorable conditions, and numerical models. The emphasis has been placed on the impact of the following limestone pillar stability parameters: pillar width-to-height (W/H) ratio, benching, the existence of karst features, weak roof, and geological discontinuities. 3-D LiDAR scans were utilized to show the shape and the extent of karst cavities observed within stable pillars around the perimeter of the collapsed area. Together, this coupling of field measurements and observations and modeled systems suggests the potential causes of the collapse.

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.'s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation's intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina's coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). Dimethylglyoxime reacts with nickel in a buffered ammonical-citrate solution containing the detergent ?Aquet? and hyroxylamine-hydrochloride. The resulting nickelous dimethylglyoxime is extracted with xylene. Visual comparison with standards permits the estimation of from 50 to 10,000 ppm of nickel. Soil, rock, or sediment may be decomposed by digestion with (1-3) nitric acid, allowing about 70 determinations per man-day to be carried out. With minor modifications to the above procedure, sediment and soil may be semi-quantitatively analyzed for nickel at the sample site. The chemical equipment is easily portable and the analysis extremely rapid because the buffer, dime thylglyoxime and xylene are added simultaneously to the sample and no heating is required. The sensitivity varies with the "availability" of the nickel ions; under favorable conditions, one may obtain a positive test for as little as 10 micrograms in soils and sediments. This procedure is similar to one, for the field determination of heavy metals described elsewhere by the author.

Hachinohe smelter, a zinc-lead blast furnace complex with the annual capacity of zinc plus lead of 100,000 tons, had originally treated normal zinc and lead sulfide concentrates. However, it is currently handling a great variety of raw feeds ranging from complex sulfides to oxidic recycled materials in view of resource economy, most of which are unsuitable for zinc electrolysis. This paper reports on some significant efforts recently carried out on improving sintering operation, i.e., the increasing use of secondaries against harmful ingredients like halogens, and the substantial reduction in energy use as the results of various modifications and improvements.

Tabular uranium ore in the Grants uranium region, New Mexico, occurs as tabular layers of a urano-organic mixture suspended within host sandstones of the Morrison Formation. The intimate urano-organic association points to the organic material as the main ore control. Petrographic evidence indicates that the organic material was postdepositionally introduced into the host sandstone, probably as humic acids; however, the mechanism by which these acids precipitated from solution remains uncertain. A model, the cation scavenging model, is proposed in this paper to explain humic acid precipitation. The model, supported by evidence from regional alteration studies of the host sandstones, proposes that cations responsible for humic acid precipitation were scavenged from framework grains which altered during passage of the humic-rich fluids through the host sandstone. This process, coupled with the affinity of organic molecules for each other, caused flocculation of humic acids into tabular zones. The precipitated humic substances then continued to concentrate uranium to form the orebodies. The cation scavenging model requires only one solution, the humic-bearing solution, in the precipitation process. All cations necessary for humic acid precipitation originated in the host sandstones. This model contrasts with a previously proposed model--the brine interface or two solution hypothesis--in which it was proposed that a cation-rich brine introduced into the host sandstones provided the cations necessary for humic acid precipitation. The brine hypothesis has several drawbacks, one of which is unrealistic hydrologic reconstructions necessary to accommodate mineralization at various stratigraphic horizons in the Morrison Formation. Moreover, no mineralogic evidence exists to suggest a brine occupied the host sandstones at the time of mineralization. The proposed cation scavenging model for humic acid precipitation not only readily accounts for humic acid precipitation, but also is consistent with geologic observations and regional alteration studies.

Each installed rock bolt costs in excess of 520.00. High cost in conjunction with the primary purpose of safety makes it only logical to install the highest quality anchors possible. Each bolt has designed support capabilities in axial, shear and fluctuating ground condition, if installed to manufacturers recommendations. The quality of anchor is not; however, only affected by material specifications, but by transportation, handling storage, installation procedure, machine performance and geology. The quality is not only affected by many variables, but reliability should be assured. Non-destructive methods of testing reliability are only available for several types of bolts.

"Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) measurements were taken at Tronox’s Westvaco Trona mine in Wyoming. Both shift-average and real-time monitoring using Elf pumps and Airtec analyzers, were used. The mine’s underground transportation fleet consists of more than 250 diesel-powered vehicles. A vehicle monitoring log tracked fleet usage during the test; logged data consisted of vehicle type, direction of travel, and time. The log was used in analysis to determine the DPM spread rate, of normally operating equipment, in the different entries with respect to vehicle location. Airflow velocity measurements at the stations were taken during the survey. The survey results also identified vehicles with higher emission rates. An ECOM gas and a MAHA DPM analyzer, both located in the mine’s underground emission shop, were used to obtain various vehicle emission rates. The correlation of the workshop and field measurements was investigated with regard to the machine activity, fuel usage and atmospheric conditions. The results were used to identify and execute a ventilation project to reroute 45% of diesel shop air back to intake entries, by interlocking an automated door and a regulator. The result is reduced DPM downstream. INTRODUCTION DPM has been classified as a potential occupational carcinogen by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rule governing DPM exposures in metal and nonmetal mines cites total carbon (TC), a summation of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) obtained by NIOSH Method 5040, as a surrogate for determining DPM exposures (Noll, 2006). MSHA personnel use the 1973 sampling criteria outlined by the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for collecting compliance-based respirable and inhalation samples in metal/nonmetal mines. Instrumentation developments are allowing improved real time monitoring of ventilation parameters. DPM is within the aerodynamic particle size range of the samplers used for respirable and inhalable dust measurements. If a sampler used by MSHA to collect inhalable or respirable dust samples in underground metal/nonmetal mines was used to collect DPM, both the DPM and mine ore dust would accumulate on the sample filter (Noll, 2006). To comply with the requirement and lower the DPM exposure, mines are implementing a variety of control technologies such as emission based maintenance programs where adjustments or repairs are performed on the vehicles (McGinn, 2000)."

Gold Quarry is a sediment-hosted, epithermal disseminated gold deposit located along the Carlin Trend. Gold, hosted by allochthonous Ordovician siltstones and cherts, is localized at the intersection of structures sympathetic to the major Good Hope and Gold Quarry faults. The magnitude of Gold Quarry was discovered in 1979 by surface exploration and by percussion holes drilled near the Maggie Creek orebody. Four years of development drilling delineated an open pit mineable gold deposit that contains 130 Mt (144 million st) of ore at an average 1.68 g/t (0.049 oz per st) of gold and includes a high-grade core of 46 Mt (51 million st) that average 2.64 g/t (0.077 oz per st) gold. Milling of the higher-grade portion began in 1985.

Environmental improvement efforts are focusing with increasing intensity on pollutants resulting from combustion. The high cost of removing these pollutants at the power station is well documented. Physical coal cleaning has always been and should remain the most economic method of reducing sulfur oxide emission from coal combustion. It is critical in the selection of preparation plant circuitry to consider capital and operating costs, as well as the level of sulfur reduction. This paper describes the technical criteria which must be used for efficient process selection and summarizes the cleaning systems available or in development.

Two major Inco matte constituents, chalcocite and heazlewoodite, are separated by differential flotation with diphenylguanidine as collector. A new reagent system involving the use of dextrin as a modifying agent which provides better selectivity has been studied for the last three years. Adsorption tests reveal that while dextrin exhibits high affinity towards heazlewoodite, the adsorption isotherm for dextrin on chalcocite shows only weak interactions. Our electrokinetic measurements confirm such conclusions. Since dextrin interaction with solid surfaces seems to be especially strong when such surfaces are covered by hydroxide layer, our electrokinetic measurements are in line with other researchers' findings who postulated that copper hydroxide is not a stable product on the surface of copper sulphides.

"The iron ores of the Lake Superior region are found almost exclusively in rocks of Huronian age, the only exception of importance being in the Vermilion district. It may be estimated that about 95 per cent of the ores thus far mined have been obtained from Huronian rocks. Although these ores come from rocks of varying age and slightly varying type, they have many features in common, and therefore may readily be described together.The iron formations of the Lake Superior region consist essentially of interbanded layers of mixtures in widely varying proportions of silica and iron oxide, and are called taconite, ferruginous chert, or jaspilite. They vary considerably in hard¬ness and color, depending upon the tenor of silica and the history of the rock. Local phases of the iron bearing formation consist of cherty iron carbonates, greenalite or ferrous silicate, rocks, amphibole-magnetite masses, cherts and slates, and pyritic quartz rocks. The average iron content of all the original phases of the iron bearing formations, excluding interbedded slates, is about 25 per cent, while the average iron content for all portions of the formation, whether in the original condition or not, is about 38 per cent. It is believed that this difference is due essen¬tially to the removal of silica in solution from the. primary phases, and, of course, such removal of silica has in many cases produced material now used as iron ore, since it contains con¬siderably more than 38 per cent of iron."

This paper investigates the design approaches taken and the philosophy employed during the construction of the Metropolitan Airport Commission (MAC) storm tunnels, part of the Phase 4 Segment of the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project at Minneapolis St.-Paul International Airport, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. URS Corporation was retained to provide a design and Construction Management (CM)services for the MAC Trunk Storm Sewer Project. A case history of the design and construction challenges of the project is presented. The MAC storm tunnels consisted of the construction of twin 10-foot inside diameter (I.D.) tunnels within 7 feet of an existing 72-inch I.D. storm pipe at the base of a 70-foot high highway embankment. The analysis required during the design stage of the project is discussed. This analysis and our design approach provided a defensible framework and justification to make design decisions on relevant issues including: allowable spacing of new and existing structures; preferred order of construction; expected ground deformation behavior; response of lining types to adjacent construction; and effects of proposed changes to design at the submittal stage and during construction.

Everyone forms his own mental picture when the subject of copper is mentioned. To an architect, copper is a warm, enduring metal with a quiet beauty; to the historian, man's first metal; to the product engineer, the best electrical and thermal conductor of all commercial metals; to the investor, a volatile stock; to the speculator, the daily price quotation; to those in the mining industry, the challenge of producing copper for rising needs in the face of rising costs and lower grades of ore. At this meeting, we will look upon copper as a key raw material in industry, in national defense, in technology, in world trade, and as a principal commodity in the economies of several developing countries. As miners, and most of us here are miners, we are prone to view our role as suppliers of copper. We locate, mine, smelt and refine the metal. In the complexities of today's world, however, following a period of the longest domestic copper strike in history which caused critical world-wide shortages and widely fluctuating prices; it becomes necessary for all of us to concern ourselves with the whole spectrum of copper affairs -"from mine to consumer " But first we need to look at the miner's side of the picture -- capacity and production. We will examine these functions in terms of the whole world -- not simply the free world. Nature did not endow all regions of the earth equally, and copper in world trade has a way of ignoring political boundaries. Science and technology, as well, know no national boundaries. It is said that the "Engineering & Mining Journal" has as many readers in the Communist World as in the Free World. Nor is this a one-way street. We presently have available to us in the. U.S., cover-to-cover translations of many Communist World mining and metallurgical journals.

The state of Arizona produced 253,276.2 metric tons (279,000 st) of crude gypsum during 1986. This represents approximately 1.7% of the total U.S. production. Four mines provided Arizona's gypsum, three of these mines are in the San Pedro Valley. The uses of the gypsum produced in Arizona are for manufacture of cement, agricultural uses, and wallboard manufacture. The gypsum is used as a retarder in the manufacture of Portland cement. The use in agriculture is treatment of alkali soils to allow water penetration. Other deposits in the San Pedro Valley have production potential, providing there is sufficient market for additional wallboard. The author completed an evaluation of one property earlier this year.

An in-mine seismic technique for detecting faults has been tested in a Western U.S. coal mine. This technique has been used extensively in the U. K. to help guide longwall mining operations. Explosives detonated on the face of a seam generate sound waves which propagate into the seam. Reflections from faults are picked up by sensors on the same face. Computer processing is then used to determine the fault locations. A known fault was successfully located in this test. Modifications to the U. K. procedures were required for the relatively thicker roan and pillar mines common in the Western U. S.

As the number of environmental laws continues to steadily increase and the economic penalties for contamination problems become more severe, environmental management represents an important management function within today's U. S. mining industry. The economic impact to a mining company for contamination is not only realized in legal fees and fines but also in the cost of doing normal business. For example, a mining company with contaminated property applying for a loan may be refused because of a lending institution's reluctance to finance due to liability concerns. Or, an insurance company may decide to greatly increase its annual premiums because of existing or potential contamination problems. One of the main duties of the environmental manager is to seek ways to reduce these types of problems by eliminating contamination or by knowing what problems exist and designing corrective measures to prevent the situation from worsening.

This paper reports measurement results for radio frequency (RF) propagation around 90° corners in tunnels and underground mines, for vertically, horizontally and longitudinally polarized signals. Measurements of signal power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut were performed at four frequencies — 455, 915, 2450 and 5800 MHz — that are common to underground radio communication systems. From the measurement data, signal power loss was determined as a function of signal coupling from the main entry into the crosscut. The resultant power loss data show there are many factors that contribute to power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut, including frequency, antenna polarization and crosssectional entry dimensions.

Bioleaching is a viable option for the processing of auriargentiferous refractory ores with high arsenic content. The application of mesophilic (A. ferrooxidans and ?L. ferrooxidans?) and thermophilic bacteria of the genus Sulfolobus (S. solfataricus and S. acidocaldarius) as oxidant treatment before the cyanidation of an industrial arsenical pyrite concentrate is presented. The results show that extraction of gold and silver increases due to bio-oxidation caused by mesophilic bacteria and results in a maximum gold recovery of 68%. In all strains studied, biooxidation resulted in an average silver recovery of 50%. The results showed that all evaluated strains were sensitive to solids content (5 to 20%) and average particle size (75 and 38 µm) of the concentrate.

Cyclones installed in three closed- circuit grinding systems were changed from conventional, vertical mounting to horizontal mounting with a favorable improvement in classification efficiency. In two of the installations, apex plugging problems were eliminated because horizontal mounting permit- ted the use of much larger apex orifices. Marked reduction in circulating load was accompanied by greatly reduced maintenance requirements for the cyclone and the cyclone feed pump in one of the installations.
