AVAILABLE MACHINES Machines discussed in this section include only rubber tire mounted kerf cutting machines of a self¬propelled electrically powered design. Such machines handle bars up to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, cutting kerfs of from 115 to 191 mm (4.5 to 7.5 in.). The basic design concept of all machines currently in production is very similar. The chassis features dual driving wheels on the cutter-bar end, fixed directly to the main frame. The steering wheels on the outby end of the frame are articulated in some manner to keep all four wheels on the floor over uneven bottom. Machine power for tramming, and all other functions except powering the cutting chain, is furnished from a pump motor that drives the specific pump or pumps required by a given machine. The cutter chain is driven through a mechanical drive train from a separate electric motor having no duty other than driving the chain. The general arrangement of a cutting machine is shown in Fig. 1; two types of machines, with their specifications are shown in Figs. 2 through 5. A hydraulically powered cable normally is included to eliminate the need for manual cable handling and make this a one-man machine. A bug duster, though optional, is needed for most applications. The bug duster is an hydraulically driven scroll conveyor located directly behind the cutter chain drive sprocket. Its function is to move the cuttings away from the sprocket to prevent them from packing up in this area and consuming a lot of machine power to further pulverize them. Available machines vary from models 610 mm (24 in.) high that can cut horizontally only from 203 mm (8 in.) below ground line to 229 mm (9 in.) above, to machines 1143 mm (45 in.) high that can cut in any plane from 178 mm (7 in.) below the ground line to 3.7 m (12 ft) above it. Most currently manufactured machines fall in the 17 200 to 20 400 kg (38,000 to 45,000 lb) weight range, but can be dis¬assembled for underground installation where weight and size are a problem. Maximum teardown results in all pieces having a weight of 5400 kg (12,000 lb) or less and a size allowing passage through a 1.2 x 2.1-m (4x7-ft) opening. Further reduction in either size or weight of the parts becomes a serious problem. Machines currently being manufactured are avail¬able for use with power supplies of 250 v dc; 500 v dc; 440, 550, or 950 v ac (60 Hz). Also available are machines for use on 415, 500, and 950 v 50 Hz. De¬signs to allow operation on other voltages of either 50 or 60 Hz can be made available without any serious problems. As of September 1977, a typical medium-seam ma¬chine without the extra options needed for unusual conditions, but fully equipped to operate, was selling for about $185,000. This paper describes Cananea's successful implementation of the world's first mobile high angle conveyor (MHAC™) to achieve multiple-lift stacking of their primary crushed (2,500 mtph) low-grade ore. The mobile high angle conveyor answered Cananea's needs to stack a second lift, 30-meter high, on their Quebalix I pad. The mobile high angle conveyor is a custom unit that was designed by Terra Nova Technologies (TNT) in conjunction with Continental Conveyor and Equipment Company (CCE's 100th HAC). The stacking system expansion project also includes a rail mounted tripper on the existing overland conveyor and a custom designed "corridor conveyor" to build the corridor for the upper mobile HAC tracks and tail of the existing mobile stacking conveyor. Mexicana de Cananea, part of Grupo Mexico, is a large copper producer in Sonora Mexico and has been in operation continuously for over 100 years.

"Owners constructing new combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems increasingly seek to have project design lives of 100 or more years in response to the growing size, complexity, and cost to construct and operate these systems. However, a codified and universally accepted approach to achieving this goal in the United States does not currently exist since service life prediction is a relatively new technical field. This paper discusses how the 100-year design life requirement was met for the design of tunnels, drop shafts, and diversion structures in the DC Clean Rivers Program (DCCRP). The authors identify some commonly referenced publications, present the testing framework used by the program manager to characterize the CSOs, review the design criteria used to guide the 100-year design life development, and establish guidelines to be considered by program managers and designers when implementing similar extended design life requirements in other CSO control programs.INTRODUCTIONLike many older cities in the United States, the sewer system in the District of Columbia consists of both combined sewers and separate sanitary sewers. When the capacity of a combined sewer is exceeded during storm events, the excess flow, which is a mixture of sewage and storm water runoff, is discharged to the District’s receiving water bodies (Anacostia River, Potomac River, and Rock Creek) and tributaries through outfall structures. This excess discharge during storm events is called a combined sewer overflow or CSO. A total of 53 CSO outfalls for the combined sewer system are listed in DC Water’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The DC Clean Rivers Program (DCCRP) will reduce the number of CSO outfalls into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and decrease flooding in DC neighborhoods during extreme rain events by capturing, storing, and conveying diverted CSOs to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant."

"A computer-based approach to online supervisory control and operations management of bulk materials handling terminals". This paper describes an integrated computer facility supporting the functions and responsibilities of shift operations, scheduling, maintenance and management using real-time interactive techniques. The functions and responsibilities as related to coal export terminals are specifically addressed, although these functions would be equally applicable to other terminal configurations and other commodities. Waste clay ponds are a necessary part of phosphate rock beneficiation. They are large, averaging 2.6 km2 (1 sq mile). They are unsightly in that they protrude 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above natural grade. Stabilization and reclamation is slow and they have had a history of catastrophic failure. Florida has never published a specific rule regarding the configuration or height of these ponds. But it has enforced several policies along these lines. The phosphate industry has been forced to make major monetary decisions that affect mine economics for decades. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation believes that the direction of regulation has been solidified but changes are still anticipated. Phosphate rock has been mined in Florida since 1890 (Fig. 1). Three notable technological changes occurred in the industry that led to major shifts in mining technique and volume. By about 1915, hydraulic mining had been replaced by centralized washers. Hydraulic mines usually started at an outcrop in or adjacent to a stream of the pebble zone. Water was pumped out of the stream through high-pressure monitors and sand and clay were washed away from the pebble. Mobile grizzlies and screens were used in conjunction with animal and human labor to concentrate the pebble and haul it away. Populations were sparse and the clays washed into the stream were considered an acceptable price for the commerce. The clays were not voluminous because the pebble zone typically contained relatively small amounts of them. Machines largely replaced animals by 1910 and provided greater efficiency of production. Centralized washers replaced mobile trommels. They allowed greater ease of access to shipping routes by rail. Some clays were placed in mine cuts from 1915 to 1930. Some were dammed off to increase the capacity of a given site. Some of these also failed, leading to clay plumes that were visible all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. By concentrating the waste clays (slimes) in impoundments, the solids concentration had increased, making plumes persistent for long distances. There were complaints. But there was no litigation against the companies during that time. In 1930, flotation technology allowed the recovery of the phosphate from deeper zones. This was because the "concentrate" size phosphate rock was in the sand-size range and could not be screened out. Centralized beneficiation plants grew into a three-step process - washing and screening, feed preparation and flotation (Fig. 2). Reagent storage, safety and the flotation cell complex made the plants into large capital installations. Larger draglines were required to dig deeper into the matrix. These had dramatically larger production capacities, which were then figured into the overall material balance for a given plant. The number of operators shrank and the production per operator grew. Larger areas were being bermed off for waste clay storage. An economic incentive became apparent for storing as much waste clay as possible in each settling area. At the same time, the population was steadily growing and more eyes were watching the activities of the phosphate mines. The grinding of coals for coal preparation has been studied extensively by previous investigators, but no similar work has been done on coal lithotypes (l-4). However, the different natural breakage characteristics of coal lithotypes have been recognized and utilized by the coal industry (5,6) to develop the Longway Burstlein process (7) for the concentration of macerals(8). The specific objective of this research was to determine the relative grindability of lithotypes, obtained from both anthracite and bituminous coals. An attempt was made to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the chemical and physical properties of the tested lithotypes. Another aspect of this research was to ascertain the size distribution and grindability of lithotypes ground at a various number of revolutions in a Hardgrove mill.

Adequate understanding of the subsurface conditions along the alignment of a planned tunnel is key for managing project risk. For achieving this understanding, geotechnical borings are conducted during design. Where their spacing cannot reduce the risk of encountering differing site conditions (DSC) in-between borings to an acceptable level, supplemental exploration methodologies or data evaluation approaches may be required to bridge the data gap. This paper compares the exploration design approaches of recent tunnel boring machine (TBM) and microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) projects in the quaternary deposits along the Eastern Seaboard, the glacial geology of the Pacific Northwest, the sedimentary rocks of the South, and metamorphic rocks in western Germany, describing their respective effectiveness of managing DSC risk.

Much has been written about hydrothermal alteration and the compositional changes induced by it in the wallrocks of mineral deposits, especially in alummino-silicate wallrocks. So much has been written and the descriptions so varied, in fact, that the casual reader frequently is bewildered by the extreme complexities and lack of uniformity, real or apparent. Certainly the mineralogy and chemistry of altered rocks are not as simple as most of us would like, but neither are they as complex in their principal aspects as pa of what has been written would lead us to believe. The trend until recently seems to have been toward greater complexity and hence greater confusion, but the straightforward presentation of Creasey (1959), it is hoped, marks a reversal in this trend.

"Historically there have been a number of different hypotheses and empirical models developed in an attempt to describe the nature of fracturing above longwall panels in underground coal mining. The motivation for such models varies, ranging from understanding the impact of mining on surface subsidence to back-analysis of caving behaviour in the immediate roof behind the longwall face. One of the most critical motivating factors that is taking on increased importance in many coalfields is the need for better understanding, and hence prediction of the impact of mining on overlying strata, particularly strata units acting as aquifers for different groundwater horizons.This paper reviews some of the major prediction models in the context of observed behaviour of strata displacement and fracturing above longwall panels in the Southern Coalfields of New South Wales, south of Sydney. The paper discusses the parameter often referred to as “height of fracturing” in terms of the critical parameters that influence it, and the relevance and appropriateness of this terminology in the context of overlying sub-surface subsidence and groundwater impact. The paper proposes an alternative terminology for this parameter that better reflects what it is and how it is used. The paper also addresses the potential role of major bedding shear planes mobilised by mining and their potential influence on overlying subsidence and groundwater interference.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the detailed nature of rock deformation and failure above any form of large-scale underground mining is always going to be limited to interpretation from a very incomplete set of data. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to directly measure the detailed nature of the rock failure, fracture networks, and deformational behaviour above an extracted mining area. Limited techniques such as borehole extensometry can provide some evidence of relative or incremental deformation in the direction of the borehole (usually vertical). However, such data cannot assist below the horizon where full caving has caused major rotation and dislocation of rock blocks and effectively destroyed the instrumentation borehole. Above such a horizon, the data is only valid along the axis and in the direction of the borehole, and to the level of detail defined by the extensometer anchor spacing intervals. It is often also restricted by major shear planes intersecting the extensometer borehole and cutting off the instrumentation below the level of the shear horizons."

This is an extension of the work on recovery of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores, and recovery of silver and gallium from flue dust from phosphate industry. Carbon adsorption was considered as the most adequate method for recovery of silver from thiourea leach solutions. For this reason it was decided to examine the characteristics of adsorption of silver on activated carbon. Coconut hard shell activated carbon was used for this study. Ag(TU)2C1 complex was dissolved into thiourea solution to give 2 gpl stock solution. Thy studied parameters were: loading isotherms at 25°C, 35°C, and 45°C, initial kinetics as a function of thiourea concentration, temperature, pH, N2, and O2. It was found that the loading capacity of carbon for silver and thiourea was 137-150 mg/g and 514 mg/g, respectively, at 25 °C.

The Macmillan Pass tungsten property (MacTung) is the largest known copper-tungsten, calcic, exoskarn deposit in the Western Hemisphere. Located on the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories in northwestern Canada, the deposit crops out on Mt. Allen within the Selwyn Mountain Range. It was discovered in 1962 by a subsidiary of AMAX Inc. and has since been explored by 16,300 meters of surface and underground diamond drilling and by 800 meters of underground development. Geologic reserves are in excess of 30 million tons, grading slightly less than 1.0% WO3. Scheelite (CaWO3 ) is the main mineral of economic interest. Accessible by road, the property is not in production. Previously estimated reserves at MacTung have been unable to fully utilize all the geological controls on mineralization. In the past three years, however, an intensive program has been underway to improve our understanding of the deposit and to use the resulting information in a more precise way. This paper will discuss the key aspects of the geology as they specifically relate to reserve estimation and will demonstrate how these controls are being used in a geostatistical model of the deposit.

Consulting studies place a large share of the blame on increased governmental regulatory activities and on inexperienced, improperly train people. Union rules, which allow indescriminate bidding for job openings, seem to be a major factor causing the lack of experience in spite of elaborate training programs.

Society's growing concern over the number of deaths and serious injuries occurring in coal mines, coupled with a growing sentiment to develop and promulgate improved mandatory health or safety standards, was no doubt the basis for passage by Congress of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, being Public Law 91-173 approved December 30, 1969. Even prior to passage of the Act, strong reaction was quick to arise concerning the effect of such legislation upon the coal mining industry. Initial response varied from mild forms of criticism to' the expressed fear of complete suspension of operations and mine closings. Primarily responsible for these early forms of skepticism were speculative or fanciful cost estimates which led operators to contemplate a less than prosperous existence. However, in spite of this unfavorable outlook, the majority of the operators have faced up to the situation and have been striving to comply with the Act and the regulations issued thereunder. While encouraging strides have been made toward implementation of the Act, it must be recognized that noticeable results have been attained only through many months of determined effort and, as anticipated, at quite heavy expense to the operator.

Naumannite (Ag,Se), a silver selenide mineral, was first discovered in 1828. This study investigates the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and leaching kinetics of naumannite. Mechanical activation in a planetary ball mill increased its specific surface area, enhancing the leaching rate of silver in nitric acid (HNO3). The study found that mechanical activation significantly improves silver recovery.

Coconut shells are the most widely used raw material for the production of activated carbon used in the gold production by cynanide leaching. There have been efforts to find alternatives to coconut shells. Shells and stones of certain fruits, have been tested. Although promising results to some extent were obtained, coconut shells remain the main source of activated carbon. Türkiye has become a country of interest in terms of gold deposits of epithermal origin. Four deposits have already been discovered and, mining and milling operations are expected to start in the near future. Explorations are underway in many other areas of high expectations. Türkiye is also rich in fruits which can be a valuable source of raw material for activated carbon production. In this study, hazelnut shells, peach and apricot stones, abundantly available locally, have been tested to determine whether they are suitable for the gold metalurgy. Parameters of carbonization and activation have been optimized. Gold loading capacity and adsorption kinetics have been studied.

This article offers one of the infrequent looks at Chinese mining. It includes a brief review by Parrish of a tungsten symposium held there and his comments on and impressions of the mines he visited. In early Oct. 1981, a Symposium on the Geology of Tungsten was held in the Peoples Republic of China. There were approximately 100 participants. Half of them were Chinese. The remainder included representatives of the United Nations, geologists from other nations in Southeast Asia, and 10 invited specialists from other countries. The invited guests included K.F.G. Hosking of the Camborne School of Mines, United Kingdom; C.S. Hutchinson of the University of Malaysia; K. Mattson of LKAB Int. AB, Sweden; T. Kwak of Latrobe University, Australia; K. Sato and S. Ishihara of the Geological Survey of Japan; M. Clarke of the Department of Mineral Resources, Indonesia; P. Bateman of the US Geological Survey; and the author. R. Horsnail of Amax was also invited but was unable to attend because of delayed visa clearance. The meeting was noteworthy because the Chinese were presenting more than half the papers. In addition, following the formal session, everyone was taken to the famed Jiangxi tungsten district and toured four mines there. Organization and Background The idea for a symposium on tungsten geology was brought up in late 1979 during a visit to China by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and, in particular, by members of the Regional Mineral Resources Development Centre (RMRDC) of the United Nations. Discussions continued and in the spring of 1981 invitations were sent to selected geologists throughout the world. China's Ministry of Geology handled arrangements, scheduling, and logistics. Travel to China and all correspondence before the symposium were coordinated by the Bandung, Indonesia Bureau of RMRDC. All costs in China were met by the Peoples Republic of China. Airfares and "per diem" enroute for participants were paid by respective governments, sponsors, or individuals. On Oct. 10, visiting participants entered China from Hong Kong. The author and a few others traveled by train to Guangzhou (Canton). Most of the group flew in the next day. The entire group was then taken to Nanchang, traveling by sleeper train and arriving on Oct. 11. The symposium group stayed at the Kiangsi Hotel, where the meetings were held. Meetings Oct. 11 was a day of orientation and rest. The group was taken to an art museum and treated to a Chinese opera movie. The formal meetings began on Monday, Oct. 12. Simultaneous translations aided presentations, though more than half the Chinese speakers delivered their talks in English. The acoustics and sound system were excellent, and the Chinese provided 35-mm and overhead projectors. There was no screen, however, and the yellow, painted wall that was used detracted from projection clarity. In general, the Chinese papers were detailed, thoughtful, and professional. Some, naturally, were stronger than others. Taking them as a unit, one derives the following sequence to the Chinese approach to tungsten exploration: (1) Geologic investigations with mapping at a scale of 1:200,000 accompanied by only minor geochemical or geophysical work. (2) Geophysical investigation with regional gravity and magnetic surveys directed toward identifying deep, tectonic systems and seeking granites in thick, crustal environments. New concepts in shaft kiln processing are included in the design of two large diameter shaft kiln plants now under construction. One kiln will be used to produce cement clinker at the Boettcher plant of the Ideal Cement Company at Fort Collins, Colorado. The other kiln is for the semi-commercial oil shale plant for Petrobras, the Brazil National Oil Company at Sao Mateus do Sul, Parana, Brazil. Investigations on application of the new concepts are proceeding in a portable pilot kiln. Experiments conducted with limestone dusts and dolomitic marble dusts have indicated that when rock dust is wetted and subsequently dried, it becomes a solid, non-dispersible cake. However, in order to be effectively inert a coal dust explosion, rock dust must be able to disperse as individual particles to air. To counteract this, rock dust manufacturers created treated rock dusts that will resist caking after moisture exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted a series of laboratory-scale experiments on four base rock dusts and their treated counterparts to assess the effectiveness of various anticaking additives after being exposed tomoisture and then dried. The dusts were exposed tomoisture using humidity cabinets having a high relative humidity (99% RH) and by also exposing the rock dust bed to water through bottom wicking. The dusts were then evaluated for dispersibility after drying using the NIOSH-designed dust dispersion chamber. The anti-caking additives were different concentrations of stearic acid, oleic acid, and xylene-based surfactants. All results were compared to a reference rock dust used to conduct large-scale experiments in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM), Fairchance, PA. When the untreated dusts were dried after exposure to moisture for 1 day, no dispersion was measured. However, rock dusts treated with anti-caking agents were readily dispersible even after exposure to moisture for 6 months. This report details the analysis and characterization of anticaking additives using the NIOSH-designed dispersion chamber and the 20-L explosion test chamber.

The Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel is being built to bypass a substantial leak in New York City’s primary water supply tunnel. The 13,500 foot long tunnel travels 600 feet under the Hudson River through the same troubled geology and high pressure water inflows that the original tunnel did in the 1940s. A Robbins TBM traversed this geology and built gasketed segments. Nine thousand two hundred feet of 16 foot diameter interliner was installed and backfilled within the segments. Finally, reinforced cast in place lining was placed. This paper addresses the challenges and the multi-tasking approach the contractor utilized.
